Today’s your last full day to get in some Halo 2 multiplayer action: Live for the original Xbox shuts down tomorrow.

As announced back in January, Live for Xbox 1 is about to be totally shutdown, including Live support and full online multiplayer for titles like Bungie’s blockbuster, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat and more.

On the upside, Microsoft’s said that because of the service’s closure it can raise the amount of friends you can have on your 360 Live friends list.

So get those matches of Halo 2 Slayer in now before it’s too late.

If you ever owned a copy of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, specifically the naughty version that contained the crude, digital doggy-styling mission known as “Hot Coffee,” you may already be five U.S. dollars richer. Publisher Take-Two is sending out checks.

Those checks are part of publisher Take-Two Interactive’s efforts to “voluntarily fulfill all properly-submitted claims” over the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas “Hot Coffee” incident and lawsuit. The game, originally released in 2004 on the PlayStation 2, featured hidden data for a playable sex mini-game that was not meant to be accessed by players. That data was eventually accessed by Patrick Wildenborg, a Dutch modder, via the PC version of the game, released in 2005.

In the ensuing fallout, the ESRB re-rated the game “AO,” meaning it was appropriate for Adults Only, and prompted a recall and relabeling of the original version. Publisher Take-Two was later hit with multiple lawsuits over the incident.

As part of the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas settlement, owners of the original version of the Rockstar Games-developed PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC game could receive cash compensation for their offended sensibilities. Those payouts, ranging from $5 USD to $35 USD, are on their way to claimants now, as at least one Kotaku reader can attest.

According to the official GTA Settlement web site, “All those who filed claims for benefits prior to the May 16, 2008, deadline will receive those benefits prior to April 15, 2010.”

Dear Eligible Claimant:Although the court hearing this action decided not to certify a settlement class, Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. will voluntarily fulfill all properly-submitted claims.

By depositing the attached check, you will release any and all claims, of any nature whatsoever, including unknown claims, arising out of your purchase or use of the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas video game, against the Defendants, their officers, employees and representatives, and all persons or entities that designed, manufactured, supplied, advertised and marketed Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. You also will be deemed to have waived any and all rights that you have under any law or regulation that would otherwise limit the effect of this release to claims actually known or suspected to exist at the time of execution of this Settlement Agreement, including, but not limited to, the provisions of Section 1542 of the California Civil Code, to the extent deemed applicable, which provides as follows:

1542. “GENERAL RELEASE-CLAIMS EXTINGUISHED. A GENERAL RELEASE DOES NOT EXTEND TO CLAIMS WHICH THE CREDITOR DOES NOT KNOW OR SUSPECT TO EXIST IN HIS FAVOR AT THE TIME OF EXECUTING THE RELEASE, WHICH IF KNOWN BY HIM MUST HAVE MATERIALLY AFFECTED HIS SETTLEMENT WITH THE DEBTOR.”

EA’s announced it is going to close more online servers for its games.

It’s the second such cull in recent months after a first batch of games which had an online service was shut down last month.

This time, the changes affect Mercenaries 2: World in Flames for PC, The Godfather for PS3 and 360, Army of Two for PS3 in Asia only, Lord of the Rings: Conquest for PS3 and 360 and The Simpsons Game for PS3 and 360.

Also going to be shutdown is Need for Speed: Carbon and Pro-Street for PSP and Burnout 3: Takedown for PS2 and Xbox.

The shutdowns take place on March 16 and April 15 respectively.

Major Nelson’s announced that Xbox Live services for the original Xbox will shut down as of April 15.

 It’s also been confirmed that Live servers for any Xbox titles released via the Xbox Originals service for 360 are to also be closed.

The first step in the shutdown will see auto-renewals turned off for anyone using Live on an original Xbox.

“We did not make this decision lightly, but after careful consideration and review we realize that this decision will allow us unprecedented flexibility for future features,” said Nelson.

Ian Webster, community manager for Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, has revealed that a second bit of DLC is currently being developed for the game on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling has tweeted that the Modern Warfare 2 playlist is getting an update today for all platforms.

While the gaming world’s aware that Microsoft has put the hammer down and started banning folks with modded Xbox 360’s, a new report states that the number of players tossed could be higher than originally thought.

When the news first broke this week, it was estimated that around 600,000 were toast, but now it seems that up to 1 million could have been affected.

“All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs violates the Xbox Live terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox Live,” Microsoft said in a statement.

With over XBL 20 million users worldwide, expect that number to get even higher.

Infinity Ward’s Rob Bowling has tweeted that anybody who has a retail copy of Modern Warfare 2, instead of a pirate/modded version, their multiplayer stats won’t be reset.

It comes as last week, Bowling said that a full multiplayer reset was on the cards.

“Any players who purchased a legit retail copy will not be reset or banned. Only modded / pirate versions will be,” he said.

Bowling also confirmed that anyone who got the game early from some retailers, including GameStop, won’t be punished.

“ANY store selling #MW2 early is in violation of street date. There are no “special permissions”. That said, we won’t punish players for it.”

According to the latest issue of trade publication The Future, Microsoft is readying two new Xbox 360 Elite bundles.

The supplement (included with this week’s edition of MCV), features a page dedicated to the Xbox 360. Two thirds of the page focuses on the newly launched Sky Player for Xbox 360 and the Sky Sports and Entertainment Pack which offers a one month subscription to Sky and Sky Sports, a Media Remote and a three month Xbox LIVE Gold subscription card.

In the final third of the page is an ad for Xbox bundles, revealing the Star Trek and Transformers 2 packs.

The Star Trek bundle includes an Xbox 360 Elite plus Star Trek the movie on a Star Trek USB stick, 800 MS Points to download “Star Trek PDLC” and an additional black Wireless Controller.

The Transformers bundle includes an Xbox 360 Elite plus Transformers 2 the movie on a Bumblebee-styled USB stick, a copy of Transformers 2 The Game and an additional black Wireless Controller.

Someone seems to of gotten a copy of Modern Warfare 2 early for PS3 and they have been live streaming it to the public. Something interesting in this video is that its played completely in third person and looks like it is not spectator or anything of the sorts. Could this be the big secret Infinity Ward has been talking about?

It seems it is true according to a screeshot someone took of the game modes screen.

It is in another language but the users on the Infinity Ward forums were quick to translate it.

Tired of post-apocalyptic games set in the U.S.? No worries, THQ has your back: They’ve just unveiled a post-apocalyptic game set in Moscow.

First-person shooter Metro 2033, which is due to hit the PC and Xbox 360 in 2010, has you taking on the role of a man born in the days before most of humanity is wiped out by an apocalyptic event. Now, 20 years later, you have to make your way to the center of the Metro system to warn survivors of an impending threat.

The game, which is based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novel Metro 2033, is being developed by Ukrainian studio 4A Games.

“Metro 2033 will plunge gamers into a terrifying vision of the future,” said Richard Williams, vice president of global brand management, THQ. “4A Games have worked closely with Dmitry Glukhovsky to deliver a unique game world, a compelling, cinematic story and an incredible, atmospheric experience to rival anything in the category.”

“Metro 2033 boasts some of the most advanced graphics and PhysX effects we’ve ever seen,” said Ujesh Desai, vice president of GPU business at NVIDIA. “From what we’ve seen so far, this will be a showcase PC gaming title for 2010!”

Are you using a cheap, hefty memory card to save content on your Xbox 360? If so, you might want to make some changes.

Microsoft spokesperson Major Nelson announced on his blog that “unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360″ once consumers download and install the system’s anticipated November update. While the move is meant to thwart piracy, it’s also incited some backlash from 360 gamers.

At issue is the fact that a standard, first-party Microsoft memory card holds a rather paltry 512MB of storage and retails for $29.99. Gamers looking for more bang for their buck have been able to purchase third-party cards with up to 4GB of storage for only $50 — nearly eight times the space for less than twice the price. But once the update goes live, any card not recognized by Microsoft as an “approved” device will simply fail to work with the system.

Disgruntled 360 owners have been weighing in on Major Nelson’s blog (currently sporting roughly 400 comments), frequently pointing out that chief competitor Sony lets users save games with any USB-compliant storage device and can even swap in non-Sony branded hard drives.

So which cards won’t work? That’s a little tough to say, as Microsoft has yet to issue a full, specific list of approved and non-approved cards. However, they do offer tips for figuring out whether or not your card cuts the mustard.

And before you simply decide to pass on the update, consider the wealth of goodies packed inside: Facebook and Twitter functionality, 1080p HD movies on-demand through Zune video, streaming music through Last.fm, and news services through MSNBC, to name a few.

Codemasters is planning on some serious DLC releases for Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, as confirmed in a Telegraph interview with Sion Lenton, the game’s executive producer.

“We’ve got some very ambitious plans with DLC – our first pack is coming up in a matter of weeks,” said Lenton.

The developer went on:

“Our team are already prototyping all sorts of stuff to be released as DLC and we’re really excited about it. It’s a really different type of market now; I remember five or six years ago, you’d get a game, finish it, put it back on the shelf and that was it. But now it’s almost as though the game’s release is just the beginning, really.

“Ours is a game that lends itself very well to expansion – there will be weapons packs, map packs – all sorts of things we can do to get our product out there.”
