Need ideas for training/seminars!

Recommended Posts

Our department's supervisor is going to retire late this year. I'm one of the two candidates that can possibly be chosen for that position. I've worked hard to get to where I am now, that is, department manager. I've worked lots of late hours, sometimes unpaid, just to make sure that my work is of the best quality and quantity.

The other department manager and I are being given a month to prepare for a training/seminar for the other department supervisors and managers. The group that we will be instructing has been divided into two. So that's one for the other manager and one for me. It wasn't specifically said that this will affect who will get the department supervisor position but still I really want to do my best.

Have I mentioned that I work in the HR department that's why we're in charge of the training, seminars and workshops?

Well anyway, my problem now is how I can make this seminar really worthwhile and memorable for the group that I will be instructing. What do you think is the best way to make presentations? Is it better if we hold the seminar outdoors or just stick with the conference room? Any suggestions, tips, advice?

Thank you so much! I'm looking forward to your replies.

i was a supervisor for an oilfield company for a few years, and the best thing i could tell you is to find a way to make it interactive. if you can find a way to include the group your teaching, they have more fun and participation keeps their interest. i would also vote against outdoors. too many distractions usually, unless its something that requires an outdoor environment. i did a lot of various safety training for our employees. it gets boring fast, and is usually repeated yearly, so keeping it interesting was always a challenge.

Do you think it's a good idea to use something like these sets for supervisory skills (hrdqstore.com/supervisory-skills.html). I found them online when I was looking for tips. Do you think it'll be effective or maybe I should just make my own presentation and everything?

What about games? Our department supervisor never really liked playing games during seminars but I'd love to play some. Do you think it's childish?

books wont make you a better supervisor. from my experience, and this is only my opinion based on that experience, theres two things you should consider to be a good supervisor.

1. think about the supervisors youve had in the past. what made each one good and bad? why did you like one and not another? more than likely, the things that made you like a supervisor made everyone like that supervisor. try to learn from what each of those people offered.

2. this is very important. upper management may choose you to be the supervisor, but its the people below you that choose you to be their leader. dont ever put your self above them. i had a lot of respect from the workers and contractors i dealt with on a daily basis because i would teach new guys and help crews with jobs, although my job was only to watch them, correct mistakes, assign work, and report back to the company office. this got me in a little trouble because my bosses wanted me doing less hands on, and more paper shuffling.

im not really familiar with what you do, so any advice i can give you will have to be translated to fit your situation. but im happy to help if any of this is of benifit to you.
