is there a way to take the white in a picture and just turn it into space ?

hmmm do i fuck around with him or do i tell him the answer......hmmmm.....lol yes what i think you mean is turn the white into nothing (transparent) when you create a "new" file you go down to background contents and go to transparent

how do i make a current pic transparent i can do that with a new but cant seem to get it to work with opening a pic

its called rendering, there are a couple different ways to do it. One is using the magic wand to select what you want to delete. You can also use a polygon lasso to select what you want to copy and then invert the selection to delete the rest. There are tons of other ways to do this but those are 2 of the most common.
