IRISH BULL Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 I had my daughter paint a ceramic dish for my wife for moms day. Keep it closed Attitude!! Anyway, I don't think the store I bought it from put enough coating on it so that I can use it as an actual dish. What can paint over it to preserve the painting my daughter did and still be able to hand wash it? I'm guessing some sort of clear shellac, but is there something I can spray on as opposed to paint on? Quote
HippieChik Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 I would take it back to them and have them clear coat it and fire it again ... even if I had to pay extra for it. Quote

Directors shane Posted May 3, 2011 Directors Report Directors Posted May 3, 2011 You would have to have one hell of an oven to do it yourself... so you would have to have it done there. Quote

TOW-19 Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Let's make sure we all talk about pottery after this.... Quote
HippieChik Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 So there is no way I can clear coat it myself to make a useable dish? No, I don't think so. You have to fire the pottery at high temperatures so like Shane said, unless you have a kiln or one killer oven, it just isn't going to be that easy to do it yourself. Not to mention, are you going to hand wash it every time? If not, you better be safe and take it back to the pottery place. Quote
HippieChik Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 You are welcome. I know how important things like this are and if it were my gift, I'd be so upset if it was somehow destroyed because the coating wasn't sufficient. Of course, your wife could always just display it and not actually use it. Either way, I'm sure she will love it! Quote
