I thought the Support Strike Package was based on a point system, and not just kills. From the interviews I saw, I thought you could actually get a streak bounus by just completing objectives.

Call of Duty Community explains the different Killstreaks for us.

Modern Warfare 3 Killstreak System Explained

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

One of the most important aspects about Modern Warfare 3 will be the killstreak system. If Infinity Ward does it right, every single Call of Duty fan will love them for it. However, if Infinity Ward doesn’t get it right, all hell will break loose. With Modern Warfare 2 we had the chance to see what a sub-optimal killstreak system can do. Enough people have complained about the killstreak system and even today, nearly 2 years after the official launch, you will see new complaints about it.

Infinity Ward is aware of the fact that the killstreak system used in Modern Warfare 2 can be improved and with the new killstreak system used in Modern Warfare 3, they intend to do just that. Robert Bowling kept hinting via Twitter that Modern Warfare 3 would include a re-vamped killstreak system and after watching countless videos released during and after the Call of Duty XP event, we now know what the re-vamped killstreak system implies.

Click here to see all 26 killstreaks in Modern Warfare 3.

Killstreaks are divided into Strike Packages

The biggest change in the killstreak system is that the new killstreak system is divided into 3 groups called Strike Packages. Modern Warfare 3 will include an Assault Strike Package, a Support Strike Package and a Specialist Strike Package. The old system where every player had to pick from the same list of 15 killstreaks is gone. Instead, players need to pick 3 killstreaks from 1 of the Strike Packages.

Assault Strike Package: This Strike Package can be seen as the same killstreak system used in Modern Warfare 2. Streaks within the Assault Strike Package chain and are designed for more direct damage. Killstreaks such as the Attack Helicopter, AC-130 and Osprey Gunner can be found in the Assault Strike Package. Upon death, your streak will reset.

Support Strike Package: Streaks within this Strike Package do not chain (think killstreak system used in Black Ops). Streaks within the Support Strike Package are more support oriented. Killstreaks such as the Counter UAV, SAM Turret and EMP can be found in the Support Strike Package. Streaks do not reset upon death.

Specialist Strike Package: The Specialist Strike Package is designed for the expert players. Rewards come in the form of additional Perks. A player activates additional Perks as they progress in a point streak. Players managing to gain 8 points without dying will be able to use every single Perk in the game (click here to see the Modern Warfare 3 Perk list). These Perks last until death.

Ways to earn points towards Killstreaks

One of the problems with the killstreak system used in Modern Warfare 2 was that it pushed players to focus less on game objectives and more on killing other players, even if it wasn’t the main objective for that game mode (think Domination, Capture the Flag, etc.)

The killstreak system in Modern Warfare 3 wants to solve this problem by rewarding players in different ways than just killing other players. What used to be called a killstreak can now be called a pointstreak as well as killstreaks in Modern Warfare 3 will be earned through accumulation of points. There will be 3 ways in which a player can earn points towards his killstreaks.

  1. The first way a player can earn points is by completing game objectives in game modes such as Domination, Capture the Flag, Search & Destroy, etc. Every objective “completion†is worth 1 point.
  2. The second way a player can earn points is by getting 2 assists. Every 2 assists a player will earn 1 point. This only works if you have Hardline Pro equipped.
  3. The third way a player can earn points is by killing opponents of course. Every kill is worth 1 point.

I’m hoping that by introducing the point system players will focus less on killing other players and more on objectives when appropriate. All in all I’m looking forward to trying Modern Warfare 3 and the new killstreak system and I’m curious what you think about it.
