Backing up my PS3 to a external Hard drive??

so i want to back up my PS3.

 

it says that i need at least 32GB of free space so i can't use my 4GB junk dive.

 

i have a external HD but i connect it to the PS3 and it's not recognized or something so i can't back up.

 

how do i get my PS3 to recognize my external HD???

Don't quote me on this but I think I read somewhere that you have to hook the external hard drive up to your CPU and reformat the drive to Fat32.....I will check to see if I can find that info.

hmm that would sick since i have my whole PC backed up X2. one as a backup type the other has everything in folders as i have almost nothing in my PC.
