MLB 2009 Season Predictions

Recommended Posts

Well with the season kicking off tonight, let's hear everyone's predictions.

Here are mine (** denotes wildcard):

AL Central:

1. Cleveland Indians

2. Twins

3. White Sux

4. Royals

5. Tigers

AL East:

1. BoSox

2. Rays**

3. Yankees

4. Blue Jays

5. Orioles

AL West:

1. Angels

2. A's

3. Rangers

4. Mariners

AL MVP: Josh Hamilton

AL Cy Young: Roy Halladay (Don't be surprised though if Zack Grienke finishes in top 3 or even wins it).

AL Rookie of the Year: Matt Wieters will edge out David Price (both in minors to start, but Wieters will be the everyday catcher for the O's by May).

AL Manager of the Year: Eric Wedge, but Bob Geren and the A's might turn a few heads.

AL Comeback player of the year: Travis Hafner. He will lead the Indians to the AL Central title if he can stay healthy.

---------------------------------------

NL Central:

1. Cubbies

2. Brewers

3. Cardinals

4. Reds

5. Astros

6. Pirates

NL East:

1. Mets

2. Phillies**

3. Braves

4. Marlins

5. Nationals

NL West:

1. Dodgers

2. Giants

3. D-Backs

4. Rockies

5. Padres

NL MVP: Albert Pujols. Close battle, but Pujols will edge out Hanley Ramirez I think.

NL Cy Young: Johan Santana. With a revamped bullpen to preserve his leads, he squeaks by Lincecum.

NL Rookie of the Year: Cameron Maybin. Slated to hit in the 2 hole, that's a recipe for success in front of Ramirez, Uggla, and co.

NL Manager of the Year: Jerry Manuel. The Mets will win the division this year and you can't snub Manuel from the award if they do.

NL Comeback player of the year: Yovani Gallardo. After a freak injury ruined what would have been his breakout season in 08, he will be the Ace for the Brew Crew this year.

I'm not gonna make a huge list like that because I know the only prediction that will for sure come true. Cubbies dominate the regular season and get swept in the first round of the playoffs like usual. I find it hard still to get over that terrible showing last fall. The one guy who is supposed to change everything with his left bat is Milton Bradley? Gimme a break I like the guy a ton but one guy ain't gonna help the Cubbies. We need playoff players not regular season only. :'(

I think the biggest problem with the cubs this year is going to be health. Milton Bradley hasn't played more than 100 games in the field since 2004. Rich Harden is very talented, but his history of arm problems means he's one tweak away from season ending surgery. Carlos Zambrano has thrown 1266 innings since 2003 (211 IP/yr), which is an extreme workload for a 21-26 yr old. The arm troubles he had last year are probably just the tip of the iceberg. I think even with one or two injuries they still compete, but St. Louis is going to be tough this year especially if Chris Carpenter is back to his Cy Young Award level. I am certainly looking forward to the season.

On a side note, as a lifelong cardinal fan i am almost ashamed to say that i bought a cubs t-shirt recently. I found the "Horry Kow" Fukodome shirts online and couldn't help myself (plus Fukodome playing is good for my Cards anyway)

I wish the Royals would stop leaving so many damn guys on base. Jesus the bottom end of the Royals lineup is just horrendous. May should be an interesting Month, but Bannister and Greinke are doing great so hopefuly our pitching can stay consistent and our hitting can get better.

It's early still, but the standings do look very interesting lol. I'm going to wait until June though to start giving official consideration to teams like the Mariners, Jays, Cardinals, and Marlins. My bet is only 1 is still in 1st come June 1st.

Bannister started solid last year and look what happened. 9-16 is what happened. ;) I'm not too worried about the Cubs yet its still very early and things haven't come together quite yet. I don't think the Blue Jays can hold out forever ahead of the other AL powerhouses but I do love Roy Halladay. Finalists for the NL Cy Young will be Santana, Haren and Gallardo. I like Haren to take it.

That is why I said our Offense needs to get better. We have the right people in management to see this club get better. And I am waiting to see what happens. Coco Crisp has been a nice step, as long as he stays healthy.

I'd like to see Banni have a breakout year. He pitched awesome the opening month of the season last year, but quickly fizzled. I like his stuff, but he needs to cut down on his pitches and miss some bats. If he can get going early he settles into a nice groove, but when he gets hit early you might as well stick a fork in him because he'll get hammered. He doesn't walk anyone, but is around the zone too much. I'd like to see him make guys chase some pitches, because relying on your defense only goes so far if you're always around the zone lol.

True very true. Sometimes he makes me nervous. But I like seeing his name come up rather then a couple of our starters. LOL

But Greinke has been lights out. It is great.

Zack Grienke is doing extremely well. He lost his first game the other day a 1-0 4 hitter loss to the Angels. His ERA is 0.51. All his current stats are in line with what he is capable of when his mind is right.

The big question is can he keep his mind right? He has had psychological issues in the past. If he has gotten rid of is demons and can stay healthy, he has a good shot of putting up healthy numbers.

I know Zach from back in his little league and high School days days in Apopka. He has always had tremendous stuff. His mechanics are sound. Again the question with him is can he keep his mind right. Focus is the issue.

Red, didnt know you were a fellow Royals fan.

Well they got swept for the first time this season, and it was some tough games to swallow. It says to me that while they have made tremendous strides to bolster this squad, it's still a year or two away. That being said, we got the A's coming up, and they are perfect fodder to get a team back into it.

Also, Luke Hocheaver was called up and Soria was put on the 15 day DL. Luke has been SMOKING in AAA. I hope he can transfer it over.
