No, not the horse or the condoms. Im talking about computer or device trojans. Can someone explain to me what they are, do and how exactly you can (if you can) get rid of one, also how do you get them?

I am kinda dumb when it comes to computers, and i know some of you guys here are like experts with them. :) :)

most trojans can be removed by running your anti-virus software. if that doesn't work, do what Prime suggested. some trojans are really sophisticated and some good folks out there have made scripts to remove them. a search will probably lead you to a script made by someone to remove it or instructions on how to go about removing them

lol' date=' is this the first time you've done extra cirricular activities to boost your marks?

lol i know where you are going to, but no.

I do work for the red cross, student goverment (which really does nothing), and since they recently installed smart boards many of my teachers dont even know how to use a mouse. I knew what trojans were, i just didnt know how to get rid of them. Now apparently there are trojans on several of the schools computers and many teachers are pissed, so this might help me after all. So thank you ;D

i have had two on my computer recently. one of the torrent websites i used got hacked and a bunch of trojans got there and I happened to get infected.

the ones i had would block sites that you would goto to DL the antivirus program. the program i used was malware bytes. i was able to download the program to remove the virus using a USB thumb drive on my PS3. it recognaized the FILE NAME of the program and did not allow me to open the program. i eventually figured out that i could just change the file name and open it that way.

it slows down your RAM and may even send private data (if you store it) from your computer to the "host'. it can keep track of you browsing history and will then have ads popup based on that history. your computer just runs slow and a lot of sites are blocked. it tried to get me to spend $50 on some fake anti virus program.

if you get one, goto youtube. there is bound to be a video there telling you how to remove the program in question from your PC.

a big pain in the ass. if you are not familiar with computers it can be very bad. it took me like three or fours days to get all this worked out.

sigh, I thought of the computer virus first instead of the condoms and i think that makes me a lil nerdy.

Trojans: A computer virus that can only be acquired from opening it yourself, i.e the trojan horse, you let it in and opened a world of problems. When you receive instant msgs, or emails "Do not click on any links" type them or copy them into your browser. Yes, there is a chance that stephani23 randomly found you and wants to have sex with you, and you can check out her live on her web cam by clicking this link, but most likely not.

Just screen any downloads you have before opening them, avoid any that say you need to enter this password in the box to be able to open it. and the easiest way to actually rid yourself of a trojans (once you opened them) is to do a wipe, and re-install windows. Personally I don't completely trust anti virus software to do it, windows should be re-installed periodically anyway to keep it from, well, being windows.

http://www.wikipedia.org is good for all this kinda info. hope that helps.

So you want to be the hero? I'm guessing..

ok read this, learn it and goat to it.. hero!

Trojan virus’s named for the famous Trojan Horse.. since they sneak in inside of something else. Usually 90% of the time the are downloaded.. it’s the old “nothing is free†method. You download some “so called†free software which when executed opens a back door for a hacker to control or remote spy your pc.

Ok so enough with the definition.. how to rid one. What anti-virus software does he have. Norton and McAfee (unless you keep paying them money for updates) usually stop actually protecting your pc yet keep on running and hogging your system trying to get you to pay them before they actually do anything. Get rid of them they suck…

. Download AVG free from http://www.filehippo.com/ and run it, its free.. it updates for free, and its awesome. It’s likely to find it and lock away the corrupted files in a virus vault. Spybot Search & Destroy is another good choice since it may not be a true Trojan and may be a spyware variant.

For the really nasty Trojan’s or “Rogue Infiltrators†as they are called. Anti-virus programs may not do the trick. For these you first need to find and identify it. The one good thing from Norton is symatics free online virus scan. Start here.. http://www.symantec.com/security_response/index.jsp it will find any problems but won’t fix them unless of course you pay them… but identifying them is the key and is all you really need.. no reason to pay them.

Once its identified check google it and see if there is any removal software already available.. again don’t get suckered into paying for it. If all that fails or you indentify it but can’t get rid of it.. then it’s a challenge and there are some people that live for the challenge of stubborn Trojans. The best one is http://www.hijackthis.de start a thread download the highjackthis program and post your log file (read the instructions first on how to do this) from there they will walk you through things.. great guys that are extremely good at helping.. as long as you ask nice, do the work yourself and follow what they tell you to do as best you can they will be more then happy to help and probably find a bunch of other problems or issues to fix along the way.

That’s it.. nothing else can help… you need to be at the PC that’s infected and only you are your friend can do that.. Trojan’s are a pain in the arse.. but thankfully for every asshole out their there are few good guys fighting them. The beauty of software is what can be written can also be erased.

I'm glad this topic was brought up. I think I might have a Trojan horse on my work laptop. Which surprises me, due to all the protection it has on it. But then again, I had one before and the company computer geeks didn't know how that happened either. But that one never worked right due to the virus protection, but it kept trying to, so it slowed my computer down.

But anyway I have this item that appears only in my picture and video documents. Its titled "Thumbs.db". When I delete it it just reappears by itself. I scanned it for viruses, but it doesn't show any risk. Any ideas? Because I'm nervous about calling the computer geeks again. I'm afraid its something I did.

lol thats not a virus, I did a search for you on google, since I'm not doing anything anyway.

http://ask-leo.com/what_is_thumbsdb_and_can_i_delete_it.html

"I've seen thumbs.db files in some of my folders. Are they safe to delete? How do I delete them?"

Thumbs.db is totally safe to delete. It's an automatically generated thumbnail cache.

I'll explain just what that is and I'm going to use this as an excuse to turn it off on my own machine, and show you how along the way....

and then the guy goes to explain thumbnails... bla bla bla.

i have 2. :(

TROJAN-DOWNLOADER.WMA.GETCODEC.U

and

TROJAN.WIN32.MONDER.GEN

RNG, what A/V software do you have installed? I'll echo the ever-illustrious Goat and say that if you have Norton or McAfee, get rid of that shite ASAP.

AVG was mentioned elsewhere in this thread, and while I haven't used it myself I have colleagues that swear by it. I use Avast! antivirus personally and haven't found much that it won't find/remove. It is a bit of a resource hog (reasonably spec'd machines shouldn't have any trouble with it though), but it's completely free for home/personal use. You will have to register on their website to receive program/signature updates beyond 60 days (but after registering you'll be good for 14 months). I swear by Malwarebytes Anti-Malware also (once you've installed it, launch the program and let it download it's updates, then scan).

I'd say your best bet would be to get a decent A/V program, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Make sure they're updated before you begin scanning, and then scan your system. If you go with Avast!, I'd recommend running the boot-time scan to be on the safe side. If it finds memory-resident viruses active, it'll recommend a boot-time scan anyway. If none of this solves the problem, then you may have to resort to hijackthis, but IMHO that's more trouble than I care to deal with...MP3's and downloads be damned, I'd rather just re-image the machine. That's just me, though.

I hope this helps.

i dont have any keygens left :( would the program that i used them on be the problem?

frosty, i actually was about to DL malwarebytes but idk if it were solid or not, so yes that definitely did help thanks man!!

No, the keygen itself is the problem.

A keygen IS a trojan. You risk getting infected anytime you use one.
