Resident Evil 3 hits PS4 today, and it’s bringing a few friends with it — both the hulking Nemesis that will be chasing Jill through the city streets as well as the 4v1 survival horror game, Resident Evil Resistance. In this new experience, four Survivors must outwit a sinister Mastermind determined to prevent their escape throughout a series of gruesome experiments. Resident Evil Resistance is included alongside Resident Evil 3, so you’ll have two horror experiences to dive into. You may have already caught up on Tim’s blog with some excellent Resident Evil Resistance tips for Survivors and Masterminds alike, so today we’ve put together a little guide on how to make the most of your time in Resident Evil 3’s Raccoon City. Bright Lights, Big City Jill will be spending some time on the streets of the city she once called home, and fortunately for you, a map of Raccoon City is readily available to navigate your way around. Make good use of it, as your map can tell you if you’ve missed items in an area, and even keep track of locked doors. Sharp-eyed fans of the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis might recognize familiar stores like Eagle’s Pet Shop, while new locations, such as Moon’s Donuts, are a great place to stop and take a moment to rest. Keep your eyes and ears open, too. Rattling doors or distant groans mean that there are likely enemies approaching — though zombies may soon be the least of your worries as you venture through the streets and buildings of Raccoon City. Mix It Up Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: One green herb mixed with one red herb is a recipe for full health. Resident Evil 3 continues this long tradition, making for an easy way to restore your health in a pinch. Red herbs are less common, but they don’t have any useful properties on their own. Make sure you have some spare green herbs to mix with them to create powerful healing items! Speaking of mixing, ammo mixing from the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (and re-introduced in last year’s Resident Evil 2) makes a return. There are different kinds of gunpowder, and different mixes yield different types of ammunition. Craft the type of ammo that fits your playstyle, and what you’ll need for the trials ahead – but make sure to plan ahead! A single bottle of gunpowder doesn’t do anything on its own. Tall, Dark, and Deadly If you’ve already played the Resident Evil 3 Raccoon City Demo — and if you haven’t, go download it after reading this! — you already know that Nemesis is a towering force to be reckoned with. It won’t go down without a fight, but you can knock Nemesis down… for a short while. What you do after that is your call, but sticking around won’t do you much good. If you want to stand your ground, bring your strongest weaponry, and make sure to practice your perfect dodges (R1 when an attack is about to hit) to maneuver out of the way and mount a counterattack by holding L2 to aim and slow things down for a moment right after a perfect dodge. Dear Diary… This is an easy one — remember to save your game at typewriters regularly, especially if you just did something cool, saved a bunch of ammo, or made a flawless escape from a hungry horde. You never know what’s lurking around the next corner, so locking in your progress is always a good idea. Saving is free, so safe often! Before wrapping things up, how about a couple of extra tips for Resident Evil Resistance? You’ll want to make the most of your first few matches, so here’s a couple of recommendations for new Survivors and Masterminds: Did You Hear That? Tim mentioned this already in his article the other day, but voice communication can make a huge difference for the Survivors. No matter if you squad up with a trusty group of allies, or make some new friends as you play, being respectful and supportive of your allies while talking through matches will help you make it to the end. There’s a flip side to voice chat, though; crafty Masterminds can choose to use their own mic to taunt the Survivors and listen in on their conversations, adding a psychological layer to the proceedings. A keen Mastermind can listen in, and play mind games by selectively responding to their test subjects. Sometimes silence is the most terrifying sound of all. Know Your Limits Both Survivors and Masterminds have a suite of abilities at their disposal, so don’t be afraid to take the time to learn the ins and outs of each as you play a few matches. For Survivors, that means figuring out the best time to use your powerful Fever Skills. Tyrone’s Rally can lessen damage when a Tyrant shows up, for example, while Becca’s Bullet Storm is great for clearing out rooms of enemies with the right weapon in hand. Masterminds, on the other hand, should keep track of how much energy they have and how many creatures they’ve placed. It might be tempting to fill a room full of enemies, but a well-placed grenade can ruin all of that effort in a flash (and a bang). Keep some energy on hand, and plan ahead — try to wear down the Survivors and run down the clock instead of going for an all-out attack. That’s all we’ve got, now go brave the streets of Raccoon City in Resident Evil 3, available now.   3. Here at Troglobytes, we were all born in the 1980s, surrounded by pop culture that was characterized by cheesy action movies and classic video games. You can tell that by having a look at our small studio — the walls are plastered with action movie posters and we also collect vintage consoles and games from that era. We have an arcade cabinet in the office with Avenging Spirit running on it. One day, as we were taking a break from developing and getting our fix of retro gaming, we were suddenly struck by its concept: you played as a ghost that could possess various characters. We then asked ourselves: why don’t we make a game that features all of the best things we loved from the 1980s: wrestlers, aliens, renegades, green berets, etc., combined with the possession mechanics? With so many great options to choose from, we were not able to decide who the protagonist of this game could be, and that’s how HyperParasite came to be: a game in which you can control them all! With HyperParasite, we wanted to take players on a journey to the dark side of the 1980s: forget about heroes; in our game, you will be playing the bad guy, and the good guys are the enemies. Have you ever dreamt of fighting against your favourite 1980s characters? Then HyperParasite is the game for you. You are able to snatch and control any character on the screen, exploiting its own unique abilities, weapons and special attacks in a neon and mullet-based mega-brawl. In order to immerse you in this atmosphere, we needed a few things: retro graphics and SynthWave music, combined with relentless action, permadeath (typical of rogue-like/rogue-lite games) and deranged bosses. The game that you can now play on Playstation 4 is the result of three years of hard work; we put everything we had into it, and we made it as a heartfelt love letter to the 80s. Seasoned players will also feel more than one similarity with old classics, and we’re pretty sure you’ll recognize every single cameo, and reference, we put into the game. View the full article
  4. You know that big, snappy **cr-unch** when biting deep into a perfect, crisp apple? Take that moment of sensory satisfaction and extend it for hours, swap in demons for fruit, and you’ll know what it’s like to play Doom Eternal. Thy Flesh Consumed Id Software has created a shooter that will shake you to your bones. This sequel to 2016’s Doom reboot is an ode to the blistering, balls-to-the-wall gaming sensibilities of the 90s. Here, the story takes a backseat to relentless white-knuckle action, capably propelled by Mick Gordon’s muscular metal score. The game is fast paced and often difficult, but it rewards an aggressive playstyle — diving headfirst into combat is usually the best way to cheat death for another few milliseconds. Once this ruthless rubric clicks, Doom Eternal becomes one of the most enjoyable action games released this generation. Bullet Hell In addition to its Doom heritage, Doom Eternal borrows liberally from the Quake III: Arena catalog of play. Many of the ferocious campaign encounters play like old-school multiplayer matches, as you launch off bounce pads and strafe through gothic passageways while inflicting as much damage as (in)humanly possible against hordes of gibbering ghouls. And that arsenal! My favorite is the Plasma Rifle, a blistering death machine that I upgraded with a secondary attack to vent superheated gas at nearby enemies, shotgun-style. Later, I unlocked a Weapon Mastery that buffed my primary attack for a few seconds after. Fire, vent gas, fire again with enhanced damage — it’s a virtuous circle with a deliciously visceral edge, and a perfect example of Eternal’s constant chaotic creativity. Of course, old favorites like the Rocket Launcher, Super Shotgun, and Chaingun are well represented here. Most weapons are replete with a focused skill tree that veers into different playstyles depending on your upgrade choices. This design adds depth and an experimental quality to the combat. The game encourages you to play again and again to try all the offensive options – and you will. I’m also pleased to report that the iconic BFG 9000 has never been better. Buckle up! Master Level Be warned: Doom Eternal is challenging, even on the stock “Hurt Me Plenty” setting. But here’s a game worthy of the struggle — once you master the drum-tight combat loops, you’ll breeze past tough early encounters and leap into the gnashing teeth of late-game battles, pecs flexed and howling havoc. It’s a hoot! Helpfully, Doom Eternal lets you swap difficulty levels on the fly. And, between friends, there is no shame in dropping the difficulty a notch or two in order to sneak past a particularly tough battle, especially the game’s unforgiving boss encounters (btw, if you’re given a chance to use the Sentinel Armor, take it). Doom Eternal is a masterpiece of mechanical mayhem, and an exquisite follow-up to 2016’s Doom. Id Software has done it again — see you on the shores of Hell. View the full article
  5. After years of quietly toiling away, 5 Lives Studios is excited to emerge from the shadows and reveal our latest creation. Once we had completed the rain-slicked neon streets of our debut title Satellite Reign, we turned our attention to the beauty of nature and set sail on our next adventure: Windbound. Windbound takes place on a long-forgotten archipelago, once home to an ancient civilization. The game begins shortly after Kara — our protagonist — is separated from her fleet during a fierce and mysterious storm. Awakening on the shore of a strange island, the player’s initial motivations are purely survival-focused, with the goal of simply returning to their tribe. However, with the storm seemingly surrounding the whole area, it’s immediately apparent that there’s something unusual about these islands, with strange structures and monuments left behind by a long-gone people. As players progress through the world they’ll uncover the history of the ancient people, their relationship with the sea and the mysterious sea creatures that still swim beneath the waves. Survival will be their initial focus, but the world is also rich with materials they can use to craft items to make their journey easier. Critical to success is building seafaring vessels. Starting with simple grass canoes and escalating to large multi-hull boats with a number of sails, players will learn to harness the power of the seemingly never-ending wind to traverse uncharted waters. But the seas are not always friendly, and the player is certainly not alone in the water. Throughout their adventure players will travel to unique islands, featuring a cornucopia of flora and fauna in varied environments. Truly no two adventures will be the same with the archipelagos procedurally generated every time a new adventure begins. Each environment has different resources available, from wild berries to hitherto unknown beasts. To truly prosper players will need to craft new weapons and develop new strategies to neutralize natural threats. Explore the scattered ruins and artifacts, unlock pieces of the islands’ past and uncover Kara’s connection to it. Unravel the mystery that enshrouds the islands and you may find your way home.   6. Hello! I’m Dong from NExT Studios, producer of Biped — our upcoming co-op action adventure game with a strong focus on moment-to-moment collaboration between two players. Today, I’m very happy to share with you the release date for the game: April 8! Biped may take place on planet Earth, but it’s actually Earth in another dimension and time, where human beings don’t inhabit the planet and bipeds have built planetary facilities in the wild. At the beginning of the game, a galactic anomaly unexpectedly “turns off” the light beacons on Earth, and it’s up to these little robots to descend to Earth, locate the beacons, and restore them. The game is primarily composed of three parts: co-op missions, solo missions, and extra hard pro missions. The co-op missions are for two players and cover the main playbook in a balanced way, but the most difficult challenges are in the pro missions where all the experience and skill players have learned from coop will be put to the ultimate test. You’ll also unlock lots of decorative items by collecting coins and buying them in the in-game shop. These are anything but serious, meant to toss a few extra laughs into your time with the game. Two years ago, two of our developers were trying to make a climbing game using full ragdoll animation tech on characters, just like Human Fall Flat. While iterating on this idea, they found it was very difficult to control and they decided arms might not actually be necessary, opting instead to let the character’s two legs do everything. And that’s how the Biped idea was born. When we started working on Biped, we were trying to make a lot of prototypes. We had a big biped, a tall biped, a strong biped… even a dog with two bipeds. This is fun because you can see a lot of possibilities. But it’s also hard to choose which mechanics we should put into the game. The theme of Biped is a joint adventure. So we wanted the visual style to illustrate a warm, vibrant, and whimsical world in which players can have an emotional adventure. It’s colorful, easy on the eyes, and hopefully will provide a soothing backdrop to the game’s otherwise demanding challenges. We tried to make our game literally for everyone! The control scheme and fundamental mechanics of the game are so simple and straightforward that everyone, of all ages, has not yet had any problems picking it up and having a fun time instantly. It goes without saying that the game is great for couch cooperation among friends and family members, but it also works magic when absolute strangers are paired together and compelled to cooperate for the first time. It brings out the empathetic inner selves in all of us. One thing we really want players to look out for is the mini-quests with the various NPCs in the game, who have a lot of harmlessly strange personalities. One day, one of our game designers made a little guy who drops coins while complaining if you try to bash him. If you are familiar with old school Capcom side-scrolling beat ’em ups you might even recognize where this comes from. We decided to keep this in the final game, along with many other Easter eggs you may find along the way. It’s exhilarating to finally talk about Biped — thanks to everyone who has read this story.   7. “They let us make a John Wick game.” That thought still hits me every couple of days. Lionsgate, Thunder Road Pictures and a bunch of film makers let me and my team re-imagine their fantastic film franchise as a game, and go some odd places with it. But more than just letting us, Lionsgate and Thunder Road Pictures encouraged us to be brave with the source material, along with our choice of genre. Let’s talk about genre. John Wick Hex is a ‘timeline strategy’ game, meaning it’s a game where you take control of Wick’s second to second decision making, but crucially, it’s not turn based, it’s time based. Actions take a specific amount of time to perform, so as you play, you’ll need to time your performance around that of your enemies. It’s a dance, choreography. Fight choreography specifically. And it’s fight choreography informed by the action team behind the John Wick movies, so your action will follow the rules and challenge of what you’ve seen in the films. Indeed, in playtesting, we found that players who were fans of the movies actually play better, so re-watching the trilogy between now and our launch might be a good idea! Chad Stahelski was editing John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum while giving me feedback on our mechanics, he’s a multitasker. A multitasker with lots of great opinions we’ve worked into our design throughout development. Bringing the game to PlayStation has been a lot of fun. The fine people at Ant Workshop have collaborated with the game’s original creators to create a version of the game redesigned from the ground up to put Wick’s skills at your thumb-tips. The game just feels right on DualShock 4, in a way that surprised even us. You’ll hit a speed and grace as you play strategically which is surprising and rewarding, and you’ll need to if you want to grab every Trophy on offer. This is a game which will serve well as an introduction to the strategy genre, if you’ve always wanted to play one but been too afraid to try. At the same time, it’s a game which rewards the new skills strategy veterans will be developing as you go, and as I said, some of those top tier Trophies are going to take some work. If you already love John Wick, this is a new adventure with the voice talents of Ian McShane and Lance Reddick reprising their roles from the movies, joined by the ever awesome Troy Baker as our new villain, Hex. As you’ll see in the new PlayStation trailer, there is a whole new rogue’s gallery between you and your final standoff with Hex. If you’re new to John Wick, wow, am I excited for you to see the movies, but you’re safe to experience the game first. The fanboy in me wants you to immediately go and watch the movies though. I am so hyped for you to play. I’d love to see you get inside John Wick’s head — it’s time to put things right.   9. We always get asked the same question about Boundary: how did the space shooter idea come about? First-person shooters are a classic genre, having been enjoyed by players across different environments and time periods including wars, cities… and even other planets! This got us thinking: Why can’t we set the stage in space? We brought this idea to life by building Boundary as a more simulative, low-orbit environment shooter, and this is what makes Boundary unique. Zero Gravity Combat We call our armed astronauts AO, or Astroperators, and you’ll need to think like one in Boundary. Movement is turned on its head in space: you have full freedom of movement and you aren’t restricted by gravity like you are in most shooters. But keep this in mind: as many possibilities as zero gravity opens up, it brings even more challenges. A well-trained AO knows how to use the environment to their advantage. Floating debris makes for a good blind spot to conceal your approach, a solar panel might be a good spot to plan an ambush against an unsuspecting foe, and you can even use your grapple hook for substantial acceleration from one point to another. Specialist Customization Many characters in Boundary can be specialized as multi-role combatants. Our experienced AO, Lucas, can act as an Assaulter or a Sniper Specialist, each with its own Tactical Ability. As an Assaulter, Lucas can give himself an agonist shot to strengthen his senses (kind of like an Adrenaline shot). As a Sniper, he can utilize an auxiliary arm that gives him a stable platform to steady his shots. Every AO has their own active and passive ability, as well as different basic capabilities like armor or health. These give them their own unique roles in the harsh battlefield of space. A Combination of Aerospace and Modern Firearms Besides the gameplay, we’re also quite proud of the art design in Boundary. There are two elements we have always tried to emphasize in our art design. We are trying to build a believable world in which aerospace technology and modern military weapons are integrated together. These two elements were the foundation of our design ethos. We approached development from the perspective, “If man engaged in conflict in outer space, what would it look like?” Boundary is our vision of space military operations (with some obvious artistic licence from us too, of course). Many others have probably dreamt about this idea — I hope you like where our imaginations took us. Coming This Year The main features of Boundary are ready and complete. The dev team is now focusing on testing network connection and adding more extendable content like personalization, as well as even more maps and weapons.   14. Praised across three generations of PlayStation hardware, Shadow of the Colossus has carved a special place in all our hearts. From the moment you topple your first giant, you know something’s amiss… that maybe you shouldn’t be slaying these majestic creatures. But that is your mission, and a life hangs in the balance. Each Colossi is special, with a unique appearance, behavior pattern, and occasionally its own sweeping orchestral score. It’s hard to walk away from these battles and not be moved by the gut-wrenching drama unfolding in each scene. Those of us at PS Blog certainly feel that way, and have shared our most memorable encounters below. Let us know which Colossus is your favorite as well! Randall Lowe (Producer, Bluepoint Games) Early in the project, we were still trying to establish exactly what the visual bar was going to be. We’d been bouncing back and forth between ideas when we finally settled on a concept that aligned everyone and all their different ideas for what the game would look like. We decided we were going to make a hard push — 10 weeks of focused, concentrated effort on one area of the game to establish our minimum bar of visual and gameplay quality that Shadow would have when it shipped. At the end of this 10-week period, we brought the entire team together in what we internally call our “triangle meetings” — that space in our studio where both wings of the office space come together to form a triangle. On Shadow, it had a lot more open space than it does on our current project, so it made sense to gather the team there. Anyway, we got the team together, and we were going through this “vertical slice” of the game, which culminated in arriving at, and defeating the first colossus. This was the first time the team had seen our version of the whole colossus encounter with dynamic fur, particle effects, lighting, audio… everything all put together. I forget who was playing at the time, but they made Wander whistle at the colossus to get his attention. I still get chills thinking about the first time we saw the colossus stop and turn to look at us, then lumbering forward with the intent to crush us, his fur shifting side to side as he moved, the ground buckling under his feet. It was an awesome moment! You could feel the pride everyone on the team had for what had been accomplished. The audible “woah” from those present was great! There was no longer any doubt we’d hit our mark, and we had the blueprint for the rest of the game in front of our eyes! Looking back on it now that a few years have passed, it’s kind of funny how awe-struck we were, because the area around the first colossus improved so much during development — compared to what it was for that vertical slice – but it served its purpose and gave us clarity to remake a game we all loved. Coincidentally, the whole experience was recreated by everyone watching the PlayStation E3 press conference in 2017 when our trailer played. Hearing the reactions from the audience seeing the first colossus turn to face Wander was one of the coolest moments for our collective careers. Brett Elston: The Seventh Colossus By the time I had six Colossi under my belt, it was easy to feel confident and more or less prepared for the next challenge. Bipedal, quadrupedal, taller than anything I’ve ever faced in my life… yep, seen and done all that. But as I set eyes upon the murky abyss that housed this particular creature, that confidence wavered. Once I saw this Colossus, I knew Wander’s struggles wouldn’t be tied to land alone. How deep is this cavernous lagoon in which it resides? Is there anything else down there? All the experience earned up to this point flew out the window – or if you prefer, plunged into the unknowable depths alongside this memorable Colossus. While other battles took place in well-ilt, open areas, this foe routinely dives beneath the surface, triggering both a sense of fascination and low-grade thalassophobia. I’ll never forget the feeling of hanging on for dear life as it slithered around the darkness, trying to buck me off and swing back around for an electric-eel-style attack. The whole encounter rattled me back in the PS2 days for sure, and still stood out 13 years later in the remake. Kristen Zitani: The Tenth Colossus I’ll be honest, part of why this is my favorite Colossus is because I found it so dang hard! By the time Wander had found the sandy cave entrance to the Tenth Colossus I thought I really had a hang on the game. The earlier puzzles were challenging and the battles bittersweet, but up until that point I was able to handle things in one or two tries. That all changed when I was faced with the Tenth Colossus’ glowing yellow eyes as it chased me beneath the surface. Staying ahead of the Colossus was hard, timing my arrows even harder. But when I finally put my trust into Agro to run straight without my guidance, giving me the time and leverage to make my shots and take that slithering sentinel down, there was no better feeling. Sid Shuman: The Eleventh Colossus I’ll never forget my first battle with this pint-sized pugilist. By this point in the game, I’d conquered 10 majestic giants through some combination of climbing, jumping, hanging, and stabbing. I was confident, maybe even a little cocky. Then this tiny terror enters the scene and changes everything. He’s not big and slow; he’s small and fast, which demands some out-of-the-box thinking. This tense game of cat-and-mouse expands the game’s systems in magical ways. From using a lit torch to force the colossus back, to holding on for dear life while it gallops through winding canyon trails, this encounter was a mindblower, and solidified Shadow of the Colossus as one of the most surprising and innovative games of all time. Tim Turi: The Fifth Colossus Up until the Fifth Colossus, every battle takes place on solid ground. I knew something was different while wading through these dark waters. Fear of a massive aquatic monster brushing Wander’s feet gave me chills. The truth of the encounter was a shock. A huge winged beast of stone and flora swooped above. The majestic creature gracefully perched on the ruins of a spire and watched my every move. It didn’t want a fight, only to observe. The only tension in the serene scene was in my pulled bowstring. The infinitesimal arrow sailed through the air and harmlessly bounced off the sturdy hide. The Colossus stretched out its impressive wingspan and heaved itself into the air. I still remember the rush of adrenaline as the flying behemoth divebombed at me. The game forces players to look the devil in the eye and leap at the beasts’ mossy shoulder to climb aboard. From there, the “fight” takes on a dramatically different feel. Wander’s only threat is losing hold of the creature’s wings and falling. Hunting for vulnerable sigils along the soaring, banking beast’s wings and tail was exhilarating. That dizzying high was matched by the plunging low of watching the Colossus woefully accept its defeat and descend into the dark waters. My penance was scrambling through the unnerving depths, trying to escape the tendrilled sin of Wander’s conquest. The encounter is still the standout moment of the game to this day. That’s our take as a team, but with fewer entries than there are Colossi, we didn’t get a chance to see and hear about the full roster. That’s where we turn to you! What’s the best colossus? Survivors Four players team up to find key items, collect life-saving resources, and outlast the monsters (and a ticking clock). It’s the classic survival-horror player experience, but with a multiplayer twist: Each Survivor can wield standard firearms and melee weapons, but character specializations, from hacking to brute force melee, set them apart. Becca’s firearm skills let her take a knee for powerful (stationary) potshots, and unload infinite ammo. Use the latter on Mastermind’s boss-type monsters. Martin Sandwich’s robust support skills let him craft proximity mines and wield a stunning Flash Baton to stop enemies. Pummel threats with ex-boxer Samuel’s flying fists. Use his Dash Punch to close the gap on enemies and deal damage. Valerie can heal fellow players with her Modified First Aid Spray, which leaves a lasting buff. She can also highlight nearby pickups and enemies. Love inventory space? Valeries’ backpack gives her 10 slots instead of the standard 8. Melee weapons are useful. Bats and sledgehammers are great for taking out single targets and dismantling key objectives. All ammo is general use for all weapons. No worrying about separate pistol or shotgun ammo. Stock up for the final escape. Save ammo, grenade-type weapons, and healing items for the end. The Mastermind will likely throw powerful monsters at you while you wait for the final door to open. Try out all the survivors until you find the one that suits your playstyle. Mastermind The bad guys hold all the cards – literally. Control the battlefield by observing the Survivors’ progress through security cameras. Spend energy points to activate trap and monster cards in your hand to run down the clock and wipe them out. Think ahead when setting traps and monsters for Survivors. Plan for the next two or three rooms they’ll be exploring. Mastermind newcomers should consider starting with the straightforward power of Daniel or Annette. Once you’ve got the basics, Alex and Ozwell offer more specialized tactics. Pulverize Survivors with Daniel Fabron’s high-powered monsters, including RE2’s bruiser Tyrant (a.k.a. Mr. X). Be wary of his cards’ high energy costs. RE2’s Annette Birkin specializes in buffing her monsters’ potency, and can call in the hulking G-Birkin form of her mutated husband to devastate Survivors. Alex Wesker specializes in setting traps and manipulating the battlefield. Drop her deadly, stationary plant monster, Yateveo, in front of an important objective to disrupt the Survivor’s escape. Ozwell Spencer’s obstructing Disintegration Field is on a short cooldown. Use it frequently to slow Survivor progress, and place it near monsters, which can pass right through it. Identify every map’s choke points and drop boss monsters like Mr. X and William Birkin there when the Survivors approach. Corner Survivors in a single, tight room when summoning boss monsters. Area-of-effect attacks dominate in tight spaces. Build a defense of traps and monsters around the Supply Zombie – a special monster Survivors can take out to earn valuable items. If this special zombie survives, the Mastermind is rewarded a powerful card. Close the dang doors! Even this minor bit of housekeeping adds up to slow Survivor progress. A main staple in the Persona series, you can socialize with key relationships to gain bonuses in battle or access to cool stuff! In Persona 5 Royal only, you can hang out with student counselor Maruki or new transfer student Kasumi. On top of that, you can even spend extra quality time with my favorite detective prince, Akechi! 2. Look out for Jose’s Shop in Mementos. Not only is Jose adorable, his shop is full of useful items for phantom thievery. He’ll appear on the map and by trading stamps with him, you can alter effects within the procedurally-generated dungeon. 3. Take your time in the Thieves Den. Want to play some card games with Ann, Yusuke, and Morgana? You can, here in the Thieves Den. This is the Phantom Thieves’ space where you can change into different outfits (and different characters), freely listen to new song “Colors Flying High,” view previous in-game cutscenes, and more. 4. Don’t forget, you’ve got all the DLC from the original Persona 5. All DLC from the original Persona 5 is available for free for anyone with a copy of Persona 5 Royal. But the treasures don’t stop there, pre-order from PlayStation Store to receive a special Persona 5 Royal theme! 5. Don’t go to sleep early!   17. Hi everyone! We are incredibly excited to announce that our newest title is coming to Playstation 4 on May 8! We at Awesome Games Studio were working on Fury Unleashed for five years now, polishing it to its core, for all of you to enjoy. Our rogue-lite adventure looked much different in the beginning, and we hope that you’ll find this story about its evolution an interesting read. Development started in 2015. We are a small indie studio, so being close to each other, there were lots of ideas coming through on a daily basis. The base concept was born in the mind of our artist, who thought about creating a game that takes place inside a comic book. Two years later, we decided it was ready to share with the gaming community and gather feedback about what needs improvement. To our surprise, it turned out to be a lot! First of all, we heard the game was too difficult. But instead of just making it easier, we chose to add an entire game mode where players can adjust difficulty parameters to their liking, at the cost of disabling most Trophies and leaderboards – a feature we’ve seen becoming increasingly popular in recent years. Also, as you can see in the above gameplay, the visual design has changed a lot since the game’s first iterations. Many players mentioned that Fury Unleashed had a “mobile” look, which gave us the impulse to gradually evolve it into something more serious, yet existing in the space of over-the-top stories. We strove to capture the atmosphere of an adventure, in which we could fight undead ancient gods while still telling a story about a person dealing with the intimate issues of burnout and self-doubt. Even the game’s name changed in the development process. It was initially titled “Badass Hero,” but after hearing feedback like “love the game but hate the name,” we made the difficult call to let it go. Sometime after the change, we started hearing jokes about people misreading it as “Furry Unleashed” — so we decided to play along and add a “Furry” customization option for the main hero! However, the most popular request from our players was to add a co-op mode. While we initially thought it won’t be possible — because from the very beginning the game was designed and implemented only with single player mode in mind — we eventually made it work, and now you can plow through multiple comic zones side-by-side with a trusted friend! All in all, Fury Unleashed turned out to be a product of love that merges the nostalgia of old-school games with the standards of modern game design and attempts to fulfill players’ expectations wherever possible. It took us much longer to make it than we initially anticipated, but we believe that going the extra mile to take advantage of feedback we received was well worth it. We’ve started to roll out regular updates to Dreams. We kicked things off earlier in the month with our 2.06 update, which includes a brand new pack — the Welcome Garden Art Pack. You can use it to create scenes in Dreams or customise your homespace. We’ll be adding more to the kit over the coming weeks, with the next drop focusing on characters. The Ornithologist’s Private Collection, created by mattizzle1, is super spooky, super clever and delightfully retro. Rally 2020 The Twin Brothers are becoming a household name in Dreams – their recently published Rally 2020 is a great introduction to their work. Rally 2020 feels great to play, and puts you in the driver’s seat (literally) as you speed through a rally track, tackling jumps, sharp corners and even a cheeky lake! It has one of the most competitive and fast changing leaderboards in Dreams right now. Try it out for yourself! Vineland Dreams is full of beautiful scenery, as well as games, animations, music and everything in between! Vineland is a hauntingly gorgeous series of scenes, depicting a dystopian near-future world with amazing set pieces (huge robot in the middle of a cornfield, anyone?). Our friends at Naughty Dog were blown away by Vineland on their stream last month! Check it out for yourself in Dreams now. Damned Damned, by creator Evarra, follows a heroic vampire as they find themselves stuck in Hell with no way out! We love the art style in Damned, it’s full of great storytelling and features gameplay reminiscent of classic platformers! We recently added it to Mm Picks in Dreams, and you can check it out here. Meet a Dreams Creator – MrCaseyJones Each month, we chat to a member of our Community for our monthly newsletter (which you can subscribe to here). For February’s letter, we spoke to the creator of the fantastic Opposite Day series in Dreams: MrCaseyJones! Check out his answers to our questions below, and take a look at his Dreams creations on indreams.me! What do you like to do in the Dreamiverse? I like to make spaces to walk around in a first person view, to make games that challenge and confuse the player, too! Most of what I make is off the top of the dome, and I like filling spaces with stuff for players to see as they roam. But the thing that most pleases me, is just interacting with the lovely community! If you could give other members of the CoMmunity a piece of advice for their time in Dreams, what would it be? I know starting a big project can cause trepidation, but like a house your Dream needs a good foundation. Big or small you just have to start somewhere, so open a new scene and start putting stuff in there! The small details can come near the end, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, my friend! What was the first thing you created in Dreams? My first day in EA I made a futuristic sofa/chair, it has an overhead light and some sci-fi flair. The top spans the chair like canvas bed, I wanted to make something simple and that popped in my head! How can people find you in the Dreamiverse?   21. For years you’ve all been asking for it, and today I’m very happy to announce that Tilt Brush is available for PlayStation VR! We’ve teamed up with the excellent folks over at Outerloop Games, creators of Falcon Age, to bring the full Tilt Brush experience to your PlayStation. The team at Outerloop has been working with the PS VR since 2015, and is exactly the caliber of technical expertise we needed to bring Tilt Brush to life. They’re also great people, so that helps. The above sketch was created with a very early, pre-launch version of Tilt Brush, back in 2015. The Tilt Brush team shared this version with some early VR developers, and a good friend of ours, Chandana Ekanayake, made this. Chandana went on to form Outerloop Games, so having them help us with this project brought everything full circle. In his words: “Tilt Brush is one of the first experiences that made me fall in love with VR all those years ago and we’re thrilled to be working with the team on bringing it to the PS VR audience.” Tilt Brush is a staple in the VR content creation space, benefiting from years of development and over 20 major updates. The team focuses on the experience first, emphasizing expression over precision, and encourages free-flowing creation with paint brushes ranging from the expressive to the mind-bending. Our goal as developers is to get users in a creative space where they’re not concerned about how to create, they’re just enjoying the process of creating. Like this bird, below, whose name happens to be ‘Noodle.’ Noodle is not concerned about how to create, they’re just happy being in that cabin, streaming tunes to their headphones, and enjoying the process of creating. Tilt Brush has an amazing existing community of artists and we can’t wait for new PlayStation users to become a part of it.   24. Hello city builders! I’m Henri Haimakainen, Cities: Skylines game designer at Colossal Order. We are excited to bring PS4 players a host of new features in the latest Cities: Skylines DLC, Sunset Harbor. I’ll be walking you through the details that you can look forward to including new transportation methods and a brand new industry! First of all, I want to introduce the core feature of the Sunset Harbor expansion: the Fishing Industry! The Fishing Industry is a new addition to the industry selection of Cities: Skylines. It is a type of industry separate from the Industries DLC and neither production chain requires the other in order to function. Fishing is such a normal part of any harbor city so it always seemed like a natural fit to add to the game and we were all excited to finally get to do it. In Sunset Harbor, you take control of the fishing industry in the city and manage everything in the process from simple fishing route planning all the way to final commercial production where you ship your canned fish to stores for profit. You get to decide how you run the whole gamut of nurturing your lovely fish farms on the shoreline to making sure they end up on the plates of your citizens. I want to dive into the basics of creating your fishing industry and what to expect when starting up for the first time. In the beginning, you will build a non-specialized Fishing Boat Harbor and define the fishing routes for the boats. Similar to other harbor buildings, the Fishing Harbor comes with a built-in road and has two built-in fishing route nodes from the outset. One will be for outgoing boats and the other is for incoming boats. From these points, you can create the route with a special fishing route tool. This is where we wanted you to be able to get a little creative and think strategically. You can draw the route as you see fit to connect the two nodes. The route shape and length is entirely up to you, and multiple fishing routes can overlap each other so you really have all the freedom with what you set up. With a completed fishing route and a functioning Fishing Harbor, fishing boats are sent out to catch fish automatically. We kept the catch rates fairly moderate and set the storage capacity to be fairly low but boats are able to catch any kind of fish. We also tweaked the speed of your boats depending on what its current action is. When it is busy catching fish it moves much slower but when it fills up to capacity and heads home, it picks up the pace. After your filled boats make it back to the harbor you can finally start the packing process, load them up on the fish trucks and export them out to fish markets! Like all of our industries, we really wanted to capture as much of the process of the whole fishing industry as possible to make it feel real and that it has a noticeable impact on the city. Our programmer Lukas Kallenbach, who was responsible for implementing this feature, and I spent several days figuring out how we could implement the feature without interfering with other industries and that the process would be clear yet meaningful. I am extremely happy with what we came up with and hope everyone will love building this new addition to their city! For fans of public transportation, we are happy to announce the most requested vehicle is now available in this new expansion! From the day Cities: Skylines was released, our CEO Mariina Hallikainen has pressured us for a new form of transportation: Trolleybuses! It seems our old fans from our mass transit simulation days were shocked to notice trolleys were missing in the vanilla version of the game and as an insult to the injury we implemented trams with Snowfall expansion with no plans to implement trolleys too. We had debated whether or not they were too difficult to implement or too niche of a feature. I can personally let every player know that we are indeed constantly listening to your feedback. We consider every single idea when we begin deciding new content! The team at Colossal Order is just as interested and excited about public transport as our community. The true reason Trolleybuses were never added prior is due to their technical complexity. These vehicles are “trackless trams,” and draw their power from overhead wires throughout the city. But unlike traditional trams, they use two wires and two poles to complete the electrical circuit and are able to change lanes and stop on the side of the road. Specifically, the trolley poles are the most tricky part of this entire system. It actually took two programmers, Tai Benvenuti and Felix Schmidt, to take the task on and finally they found a way to overcome the technical challenges, which makes me and the boss happy. Hopefully you as well! Tai and Felix explain that on every road segment, you will find three catenary masts: One at the start, one in the middle and one at the end. The electrical wires span the masts, and with some mathematical calculations we can find out the start and end coordinate of each wire section. When the bus is on the road segment, we want its pole to connect to the overhead wire. The game knows how the bus is positioned and rotated in the world, and from that it is possible to calculate the coordinate where the trolley pole is attached to the bus. The trolley pole cannot stretch, so the distance between the coordinate where the pole is attached to the bus and where the pole is attached to the wire must always be equal to the length of the pole. Now that we know where the pole is attached on the bus and where the pole is attached to the wire, it is possible to render the pole in the correct position and rotation.This was just one small step our team took to make sure trolleybuses were as realistic as possible. Last but certainly not least, we are introducing Intercity Buses as a public transport service. In addition to transporting tourists, the Intercity Bus Service also makes traveling easier for your citizens and ultimately decreases traffic, as people leave their own vehicles at home. The new intercity bus stations and terminals are located in the same build menu tab as the local bus service. There is no need to create any stops or lines, just build an intercity bus station or terminal and you’ll notice that intercity buses start making frequent stops at your city. I’m happy with how everything turned out for this new feature. We made sure to add in a brand new intercity bus vehicle model which we are sure our community will enjoy! As an added tip from our team to all the PlayStation 4 city builders out there, be sure to adjust the old bus budget slider to encourage your citizens to use intercity buses more. We want to make sure you can start seeing intercity buses as quickly as possible to ensure your city benefits from this awesome new transportation method! Our team wanted players new and old to experience the thrill of victory in online multiplayer, which is why we’ve brought it back with modern controls. In Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, you can play with up to 16 players in six online multiplayer modes. We’re bringing back the classics you loved: Siege, Power Duel, Capture the Flag, Duel, and Free For All (both solo and teams).
