  1. How many of you are big fans of Animal Crossing? We certainly are, so much so that it inspired us to make our own game. Our fresh take on the concept is Castaway Paradise, coming to PS4 July 31!

The story is simple: you’ve been caught up in a storm, and now find yourself washed up on the shores of a quiet island in the middle of the ocean. You’re covered in seaweed when you wake up to see a friendly stranger looking down at you. This time, being shipwrecked might just be a stroke of luck!

    Castaway Paradise Screenshot

Your new island home is full of quirky characters and things to do. The goal… is to do what you want! The villagers are happy to offer guidance and jobs, but nothing is mandatory. If you want to spend your days hunting for the biggest or most colorful bugs, go for it. Whether you’re farming, fishing, or taking jobs, you can be earning cash by selling things you find. Even a relaxing walk along the beach can be profitable if you take the time to collect some of the bits and pieces which have washed up.

    Castaway Paradise Screenshot

So what can you buy with your earnings? There is a huge range of items, furniture, and clothing to collect. We’ve taken inspiration from events, cultures, and styles from around the world. Whether you want to show your love of soccer, hold a traditional Chinese tea party, or even turn a room of your house into a hospital ward, you have freedom to mix and match.

What you see in these screenshots is just a tiny taster of all the content in the game. The same goes for clothing. Dress up for holidays like Christmas or Halloween, put together a stylish party outfit, or wear horribly clashing colors! You can do whatever you feel like each day.

    Castaway Paradise Screenshot

Naturally, the island’s other inhabitants will celebrate holidays with you, and you can get to know them as you help with fixing up the island after the big storm. There’s no need to rush around meeting everyone at once – just take your time. You’ll have plenty of opportunity to get to know your way around as the seasons change.

If you’re an outdoorsy type, we’ve got fishing, gardening, farming and bug-catching. If you prefer more artistic pursuits, we’ve got interior design, dressing up, and the chance to shape the island into your perfect tropical getaway.

In Castaway Paradise, the world is your oyster. This is a holiday that never needs to end! With so many things to do and so many customization options, you could spend a lifetime trying out different clothes and redecorating your home. We’ve made so much content for the game that sometimes even we get surprised by something for sale.

    Castaway Paradise Screenshot

If an island holiday sounds appealing, make sure to mark the release date in your calendar: July 31! Why not treat yourself to some time in the sun? We’d certainly recommend it!

  3. Hello! I’m Matt Denomme, Senior Product Manager at En Masse Entertainment. Today, we’re launching a new class as a free update to Tera on Playstation 4 – the gunner!

I rounded up a few tips from our team to help you level up fast and get the most out of playing her.

    GAMETITLE

    • Between you and your constructs, you’re a one-woman trinity! Summon your HB and ST units to act as your healer and tank, then get ready to let loose with all the DPS you can muster.
    • Aim for crit, power, and damage bonuses on your gear and glyphs.
    • Always be on the move. Learning to dodge enemy attacks is a great way to learn how to make sure enemies don’t dodge yours.

    GAMETITLEGAMETITLE

    • Lead your opponents with your Arcane Barrage skill, then detonate it at just the right time for maximum effect.
    • Build up your Willpower with bombs, Scattershot, Mana Missiles, and Arcane Barrage, then cut loose with your heavy-hitting Bombardment on a group of foes, or unleash a percussive batch of Burst Fire into one or more opponents.
    • Use Bombardment early and often in fights against crowds or Big-Ass Monsters! While Bombardment consumes a lot of Willpower, every missile hit restores a bit of Willpower. Then, when the time comes, unleash Balder’s Vengeance as the ultimate finishing move.

    GAMETITLE

The gunner is easy to pick up and fun to master. We hope, like us, you’ll find she’s a blast to play!

  4. Insane Robots is a unique card battler with intense multiplayer battles, a huge one-player campaign, randomly generated battle arenas, and a unique cast of beautifully illustrated robots. With all of that added, we took away two big things normally associated with the genre that some players hate: time-consuming deck building and expensive card collecting. This enabled us to make something really special.

And we are super pumped to announce that the game will be coming to PlayStation on July 10.

    A long time ago…

    TITLE

Although the game comes out this summer we started work on it in 2013 when we built the core of the battle system using some old business cards. The Playniac team then took the game on tour, playing it with friends, family and strangers, at festivals and events, around the world. All the time we worked on the gameplay, mainly the battle system, making it more and more fun to play.

With the raw material being just cards, it was quick and easy to add in new elements and develop existing ones. By 2015 we were ready to enter the digital realm, confident that we had a core game that was a lot of fun to play.

    Pulling no punches

    TITLE

The Insane Robots battle system is super easy to grasp. Each robot has two main circuits, attack and defence, and these circuits must be powered up with tokens for them to work. As well as your own circuits you are able to be sneaky and attack the enemy robot’s circuits using hacks or glitches, to make them malfunction.

All Insane Robots can all be augmented to give them additional skills. In multiplayer these 100+ augments are randomised before battle to deliver an ever-changing experience. In the one-player campaign these can be discovered and equipped to give you the best chance of defeating the increasingly difficult robot opponents.

    Less admin, more fun

    TITLE

So, all the elements of card battles are there, but the way that Insane Robots introduces and employs them is super-slick. And we wanted to go even further in our quest to make the genre more accessible: we removed the need to spend ages building and editing decks before going into battle, and we won’t be releasing huge collections of confusing and costly add on card packs after launch either.

We feel it isn’t necessary and helps us shift the focus away from boring ‘admin’ to enable players to get right to heart of the fun battles. This also means that players who don’t want to buy extra cards won’t be left behind.

    Ready one player

    TITLE

One of the big elements we added in the transition to digital was the 16+ hour single player campaign.

In this you explore a hex-based map and battle in tournaments that take place in procedurally generated arenas. As you traverse the map you have to avoid environmental hazards like the acid cloud or the ring of death, as well as other robots.

Or, you can chase enemy robots around the map and challenge them to a duel to the death! This is where strategy comes into play, with a ‘rogue-lite’ system which means you can lose everything you’ve collected, but only in that tournament – we’re not that cruel!

    TITLE

The single player campaign is driven by a huge story, where users are given multiple choices as they voyage through the five sprawling environments. Each decision plunges you deeper into the world of Insane Robots and leads to a seminal showdown that will put all your battle skills to the test.

The game is available to pre-order today at PlayStation Store with a limited time discount for PlayStation Plus members.

  5. Hello pinball and PS VR lovers! Universal Classics Pinball is available now on Pinball FX2 VR for PlayStation VR! Zen Studios is excited to boost our Pinball FX2 VR library with this three-table pinball pack.

As you may know, Pinball FX2 VR is already available with nine awesome tables, including Telltale’s crowd-pleaser The Walking Dead. The release of Universal Classics Pinball is the first movie-based table content Zen has been able to bring to VR – in fact, these are the first movie-based VR pinball tables ever!

That’s right – Universal Classics Pinball is based off three incredible cinema classics featuring Back to the Future, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, and Jaws.

    Back to the Future

With the power of PS VR, you’ll experience some of your favorite moments from the films like never before. I don’t know about you, but Back to the Future Pinball is my favorite of this bunch. I get to travel through time with Doc Brown and Marty on their exciting adventures through the decades.

Oh, and there’s a fully animated DeLorean that flies right off the table and zooms around the virtual pinball cabinet at speeds approaching 88 miles per hour. Yes, Back to the Future is awesome.

    E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

Come to think of it, though, E.T. Pinball is pretty great, too. I love reaching the game mode where I get to collect pieces of candy in the field. And of course, the fully animated E.T. character is so charming, he greets you with a wave at the start of each game and even stretches out his neck over the virtual pinball table to see how your game is going.

And do you remember the iconic moment in the film when E.T. levitates the planets in Elliott’s room? He does that same thing in the game too!

    Jaws

But then again, Jaws Pinball is an extremely thrilling table.

Picture this: You’re stranded in the open sea with a dorsal fin circling you, with nothing but your floating virtual pinball cabinet to hold on to. It’s a fully animated great white shark, waiting to show off his terrible teeth and bite into the side of your virtual pinball cabinet.

So, tell me in the comments – which table do you see yourself playing first? Honestly, I can’t seem to make up my mind on which is my favorite. I warn you, it’s not as easy as you think.

Go ahead and try them all! Immerse yourself in these fantastic film-based tables as they come to life in a whole new way with PS VR. You’ll never look at virtual pinball the same way again.

  7. Prepare to roll out and fight for fortune, Commanders! World of Tanks: Mercenaries, the next and biggest evolution of the global tanking phenomenon, is free to download from June 26.

Set against the backdrop of a war without end, it’s time to fight for yourself and be your own hero. Mercenaries shakes up the classic World of Tanks formula with a host of new vehicles to use, maps to explore, stories to tell, and game features to dive into.

This is the perfect time for new players to check out World of Tanks: Mercenaries on PS4, and if you’ve never played World of Tanks before, here are a handful of things you need to know to get you started on your career as a soldier of fortune in the world of Mercenaries.

    World of Tanks: Mercenaries

    Enter the Mercenary Nation

Guns for hire are fighting for themselves in a world governed by lawlessness, which has given rise to the new Mercenary nation. Joining the game’s nine existing nations, including the UK, Japan, and France, vehicles from the new Mercenary nation are available to fight in Multiplayer battles alongside history’s finest war machines.

Take the Reins on New Mercenary Vehicles

Mercenaries scour the world for parts and weapons to use to survive. The new vehicles in World of Tanks: Mercenaries are brought to life using parts scavenged from tanks from other nations – some tanks are made up of several different vehicles from a host of different nations! The result is an armada of unique, combat-ready vehicles that would strike fear into the hearts of even the most seasoned tank commanders.

    World of Tanks: Mercenaries

Earn Mercenary Vehicles with the Contract System

Traditionally, new vehicles must be purchased using XP and Silver earned from battles. The contract system is brand-new to World of Tanks: Mercenaries, and lets you take on missions to put together a new Mercenary vehicle. If you don’t fancy the grind, the contracts can be bought out for Gold – but the fun is most definitely in the thrill of the hunt!

Battle with Powerful New Crews and Commanders

Each Mercenary vehicle comes with a fully trained Elite Crew, consisting of incredibly powerful and skilled soldiers who are more than prepared to take on dangerous missions and deadly skirmishes. The first five Mercenary Crews introduced with the new tanks can be seen in our launch trailer for Mercenaries, from the erratic Crazy Snake to the furious Fallen Knight, and the bombastic Storm Hunter!

    World of Tanks: Mercenaries

    Discover a New World

In World of Tanks: Mercenaries, World War II dragged on for so long it reshaped the entire world. You can explore the new landscape that serves as the backdrop of the Mercenaries universe, shaped and ravaged by years of war, in a series of new and revamped battlegrounds to fight on in Multiplayer. Fan-favorite maps have been completely changed to fit in with the new world, with the lush Liberty Falls and a war-torn Himmelsdorf available to fight in with or against players around the world.

Steal from a Coalition of Chaos in War Stories: The Heist

A brand-new War Stories campaign serves as the entry point to the Mercenaries universe. In ‘The Heist’ you can embark on an action-packed mission full of espionage, nuclear tensions, and epic tank battles. The story-exclusive Trinity tank, helmed by a motley crew of Mercenaries, is your vehicle as you take on a dangerous assignment. When a shadowy agent with atomic ambitions tasks our ‘heroes’ with stealing nuclear material, they soon find themselves at the mercy of an unprecedented partnership between the United States and the Soviet Union. It’s an explosive, dangerous, and totally awesome way to get acquainted with the new world!

  8. E3 2018 was amazing for the team at Media Molecule! We were able to give media the chance to go hands-on with Dreams creation, build a mini-story along with other developers and community (all hail the Mega-Penguin!) and demo Dreams live on a giant stage at the PlayStation booth. And when you watched the PlayStation E3 2018 Showcase, you may have seen the clips of Dreams spliced in and thought “Everyone loves a guitar playing banana… but what does it all mean?!”

Well, the jig is up…err…the gig is up? Following the briefing, our in-house (in-game?) band The Molecules played a 15-minute set, performed entirely in Dreams, for those attending the after-show party. And now, you can see it too!

    The Molecules at E3 2018

Performing a live gig using Dreams has been something we’ve wanted to do forever, so seeing it actually happen has been a…dare we say, dream…come true. But, how did we do it? Well, we’re planning to show everyone what went in to bringing this concert to life during our June Dreams livestream this Friday.

Please join our awesome performers and creators (the human ones, mostly) when we get the band back together on June 29 at 9:00am Pacific live on our Twitch channel.

And in the meantime, please enjoy the first-ever appearance by The Molecules!

  9. Astro Bot Rescue Mission lifts those cute robotic mascots from The Playroom VR and transplants them into a charming and immersive platform adventure, launching soon for PS VR.

As we’re quick to find out when we sat down with Creative Director Nic Doucet at E3 last week, creating a platformer in VR isn’t as simple as switching camera controls from right stick to headset. You need to build an experience that’s tailored specifically to the platform and utilises its strengths.

Japan Studio has worked tirelessly not only to reimagine those genre essentials – tight controls, challenging platforming, big bosses, ‘secret’ areas – but also to bring something unique to the table.

In Astro Bot Rescue Mission, you control an on-screen character through a series of platforming adventures. But you also exist within the same levels, requiring some judicious co-op play to reach the finish line. You’ll interact with obstacles (such as head-butting signs) placed to halt your exploration. In addition, your Dualshock 4, also appearing in-game, transforms into a number of useful gadgets to help you both progress.

Doucet detailed the game’s innovative gameplay to a rapt audience during a PlayStation Live panel on E3’s showfloor last week. Shortly after, we found a quiet corner behind the scenes so he could further elaborate on his creation and layout his dos and don’ts for making a great PS VR platformer.

Here are a few items from his rulebook.

    TITLE

DO make sure you embrace the fresh perspective VR brings

Doucet and his team were adamant that your headset be much more than just an alternative control scheme for the in-game camera. It, and by extension your body, allows you to explore the world alongside your robo-pal.

“You’re able to see places you couldn’t see before,” he explains. “And this element of discovery or exploration, even if it’s really just a few centimetres just to see behind a platform, that in itself is can become an entire core mechanic.”

As we talk, Doucet outlines how perspective is one of three core elements to gameplay (the other two are outlined below). And all have organically evolved and originated from the team’s earliest experiments with PS VR.

    TITLE

DO play with depth of field and embrace the player’s presence in the world

I share my concern that the further I pushed my Astro Bot friend into the far distance, the more worried I was that something awful would befall him; something I’d be unable to prevent. A concern I feel initially foolish sharing, given I’m in direct control of the character.

But Doucet confirms this is by design; a perfectly natural-effect of PS VR’s increased perception of depth emphasising the growing distance between us. In PS VR, proximity infers safety.

But the studio wants to play with that, because added depth means added gameplay. While you’re feeling your gut twist with worry, you’ve some long-range weaponry to help your pal out. “We’ve developed these [Dualshock 4 controlled] gadgets, to give the player a secondary key roles, such as creating paths for your character,” he says.

Perspective, depth of field, player presence: three core concepts make up the heart of Astro Bot Rescue Mission’s gameplay.

    TITLE

DON’T forget to play with the duality of perspectives

Your own presence in the game world shouldn’t be understated or forgotten, insists Doucet. It shouldn’t be entirely about your Astro Bot’s perspective; you should soak in the wonder of your surroundings as well.

“You have to create moments to match the player scale,” he explains, even if they have no real impact on gameplay, that are built to dazzle you and you alone – such as a massive rainbow flying over the player’s head during a sky level.

DO make sure every level has at least one immersive set-piece only possible with VR

Glimpsed during the PlayStation Live panel is an aquatic section, in which our Astro Bot, replete with rubber ring, swims through beautifully rippling waves.

It’s a tease of a new take on the classic water level, full of setpiece moments. Firstly, huge waves have you instinctively holding your breath as they crash over you and your pal. And then there’s the nod to Disney’s Pinocchio: a whole stage happens inside the body of a whale after it swallows you (“It’s very much a VR moment,” says Doucet).

    TITLE

Of the latter, the director remains coy on details – “I don’t want to spoil it!” he exclaims – but is happy to elaborate on how the former works as a setpiece for both of you.

“This massive wave will smash into your face,” Doucet explains, further expanding on the duality of perspectives that Astro Bot Rescue Mission brings. “Our system can scale up a wave for a VR moment, or scale it down for a gameplay moment.”

He goes on to example a cool-sounding sequence later in the same stage in which your viewpoint will switch depending on wave height. Sometimes you’ll be gazing up at your friend from within a wave as they swim along its top, and other times from above as the sea level drops.

DO make sure platforming is the primary focus of each level, however

The studio kept ‘sketches’ of each level’s sections to more easily visualise how each was structured. They wanted to make sure each stage was punctuated with VR moments – “somewhere at the beginning, near the middle and then the climax” – but also to make sure the experience continued to favour “the core of the game”, the platforming.

“The ratio would be something like between 80 and 90% platforming, punctuated with these VR moments,” Doucet says. “We had to constantly juggle those two elements.”

DON’T be afraid to drop that really great idea you had if it doesn’t fit the game

Doucet explains that the studio has put some good ideas to the side simply because they weren’t the right fit for Astro Bot Rescue Mission.

“That’s the way we work actually; we always come from gameplay. We do loads of things in individual bits and then we bring them together, and see if we can make them work.

“It has its pros and cons. It means that you can get a lot of innovation but the difficult part is making stuff co-exist. And as a result sometimes we have to drop good ideas, maybe because, for example, the world and the gadget don’t match anymore.”

  10. Tetris Effect is, obviously, a Tetris game. What it less obviously is, though, is a culmination of Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s entire body of work.

In a turn of events that makes more and more sense the more I think about it, the man who launched Rez in 2001 and Lumines in 2004 — as well as multiple sequels and re-releases of each — has ended up in charge of a new Tetris game coming to PS4 and PS VR this fall. Tetris Effect blends the time-tested gameplay of Tetris with Lumines-style level themes and progression, wrapped in the Rez-like audiovisual bliss that can only come with a Mizuguchi-directed experience. Especially in VR with a nice set of headphones on, Tetris Effect is a perfect, inspiring fusion of the best parts of these three classic experiences.

Clearing at least 12 lines at once while in Zone mode is called a “Dodecatris”

This next part might border on blasphemy for the seasoned Tetris vets out there, but bear with me: Tetris Effect adds a new strategic layer to the core Tetris experience by way of its new “Zone” mechanic, and it’s really good. Now hold on, I said bear with me!

As you clear lines in Tetris Effect, you build up a meter in the bottom-left corner of the playfield. As long as you have some meter to burn, you can ENTER THE ZONE (I’m not sure whether the official terminology for this is “getting into The Zone,” “activating The Zone,” etc, so I’m going with my gut here). The team at Enhance is finalizing how exactly players will activate this mechanic, but when I played it was done by pressing either R2 or L2. When you do this, time stops, freezing the falling blocks at the top of the screen until you decide to move them.

Tetris Effect for PS4 and PS VR

Tetris Effect for PS4 and PS VRTetris Effect for PS4 and PS VR

This is a great way to get yourself out of a jam, should you find yourself in one… but that’s not where this new strategic wrinkle shines. The brilliance of the Zone mechanic lies in its scoring potential: not only do you get bonus points for clearing lines in Zone mode, the game also stops counting cleared lines toward your progress in the current level. This affords experienced players with an opportunity to stretch levels out longer than they’d usually run, which leads to more total cleared lines and tetrises, which leads to more sweet, sweet points and cool new terms like “Octoris,” “Dodecatris,” and — buckle in for this one — Decahexatris when you clear huge chunks of lines while in Zone mode. It feels… well, it feels awesome.

And if you can clear 16 or more lines? That’s a “Decahexatris”

Of course, I only played one mode (Story) during my too-brief time with Tetris Effect, so time will tell what other kinds of modes will be in the final game and whether they’ll have other twists on gameplay, or other modes that more directly cater to the purists out there. All I can say based on what I know right now is that Enhance’s take on one of gaming’s oldest traditions is a welcome evolution of the formula, and I’m already twisting my brain into knots trying to figure out the best way to maximize my scoring potential — and to find out what they call it if you manage to clear all 20 lines at once — when the full game launches later this year.

Deconstructing Hræzlyr – From Jet Turbines to Komodo Dragons

    God of War

Our Concept Artist, Stephen Oakley, pointed out one particular inspiration that took place with aquatic animals while creating early designs of Hræzlyr. “I know that the earliest thoughts revolved around this mechanic of the dragon being like a jet turbine. Something that’s terrifying and that could be a fun gameplay mechanic (with the suction pulling enemies, and characters towards it).”

This gameplay mechanic led to artists José Cabrera, Vance Kovacs and Justin Sweet using different aquatic creatures to create a design. “There was a piece that José had done early on that helped catapult the design forward. He had something that looked like a basking shark embedded into the belly of the dragon. I was looking at bass, which some fish had a surprising amount of suction for. This ended up inspiring a lot of features that are still inside of the Dragon today, like the gills, and it led to us trying to think of creative ways that were inspired from real life – to think about how they would be able to do the things that he does.”

On the animation front, the inspirations were focused on various creatures that create loud and powerful footsteps. Our Animator, Sophie Evans, recollected, “A lot of reference came from lizards, komodo dragons and tigers. These animals tend to be really heavy.” The movements of the Mountain Dragon needed to be powerful and strong, she said.

“A lot of muscular animals like bears and tigers – they feel heavy because they have a lot of secondary motion from their muscles. With film and TV, you can get a lot of this type of movement, but in games usually, you don’t have the tech or support to have simulations on the muscles. So, I tried to imitate that secondary motion feeling with just the torso, so it’s really exaggerated – the up/down movement on the torso and even the exaggerated lateral left and right. This gives the dragon serpentine movements. So, a mix of reptilian back and forth mixed with really heavy up and down bounce is how I tried to approach this.”

Creating the Valkyries – Balancing Fear and Elegance

    God of War

One of the most striking elements on the Valkyries came in the design of their wings. This became a very important element because of how the wings would be used in gameplay and it was also the first striking element that you would encounter when seeing a Valkyrie. Even the core design of these wings was very different from much of what you may have been used to seeing up to that point in the game.

Lead Character Concept Artist, Dela Longfish, remembered some of the challenges associated with this part of the design: “Cory and much of the team really liked that the wings weren’t natural – creating an iconic look to these characters. But the wings were the most difficult part – getting these mechanical parts and making sure it didn’t feel out of place with the technology of the time.

The design prompt was that we wanted these wings that were mechanical harnesses, but to make sure it fit with Vance Kovacs’ designs.” Our art team would play around with how the Valkyries would use their hands to push and pull the wings, in order to attack and defend. At one point, there were even handles on the wings to really accentuate their mechanical nature.”

Constructing Alfheim – Designing the Realm’s Two Clashing Sides

    God of War

A fascinating artistic challenge that the Light of Alfheim affected was the foliage. All around Alfheim, as you venture through by both foot and boat, you experience varying tree shapes and otherworldly environment art. Much like everything in this area, even these trees are affected by the Light of Alfheim.

Luke Berliner, Lead Environment Concept Artist explained, “Early on, the trees, the environment looked like as if it was growing towards a singular light source and that would look very different than Midgard or any other place. I really liked the singular idea of that light source and how an entire ecology has grown around that in a unique way combined with a more fantastical architecture.”

This idea led to interesting concepts where the team played with the region’s fauna and how that would react to having a light source centralized as a beam. Our Sr. Environment Artist, Erik Jakobsen, then took those concepts and translated them into the 3D in-game environment, although the process wasn’t so simple due to the complex nature of trees chosen.

“These amazing trees, stretching towards the light, were definitely one of the first things I remember from Luke. This being the first realm you travel to made it difficult to strike a balance between real and magical. What looks good in a single beautiful concept sometimes needs to be tested out in 3D to get the balance correct. Leaves that are too red or too white may throw off the other level elements.”

Click here for the extended story behind Alfheim.

Thank you again so much to all of our fans worldwide. We’re humbled and honored to share all of our artwork with you!

  16. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be on your second or third playthrough of Detroit: Become Human by now, and some of its musical themes will have well and truly lodged themselves in your brain.

Good news: starting today, you can stream the game’s phenomenal score via Spotify and Apple Music.

Detroit’s soundtrack is the work of three different composers, each creating themes for one of the game’s three central protagonists. Philip Sheppard produced music for Kara’s plotline, Nima Fakhrara handled Connor, and John Paesano took on Markus.

Check out Quantic Dream’s guest PlayStation.Blog post from April this year for more on how it came together.

To mark the soundtrack’s release, we’ve got a special treat for you. Watch the new video below to see composer Philip Sheppard play Kara’s theme using just a single cello and a loop pedal.

If you’re yet to dive into Quantic Dream’s twisting neo-noir thriller, Detroit: Become Human is now available for purchase via PlayStation Store.

  17. Hello, PlayStation players! My name is Youngjin Ko, a game designer and programmer at Korean developer DeerFarm. I’m excited to say our bullet-hell shoot ‘em up, Shikhondo – Soul Eater, is coming to PlayStation 4 this summer, both digitally (available from PlayStation Store) and as a limited edition physical version (available to order online at Play-Asia from June 28).

For a long time, it has been a big wish to have my name featured in the credits of a console game. Now, with the release of Shikhondo on PS4, I am very happy that my dream has finally come true!

    Shikhondo – Soul Eater

I remember the first game I ever played. It was at an arcade and I was about five or six years old. The game was a side-scrolling shooter and it used Journey to the West (Hsi Yu Chi), a famous 16th-century Chinese novel, as a central motif. It was only recently that I learned that the name of the game was Chuka Taisen. Shikhondo and Chaku Taisen share a common theme – they are both shooting games based on Asian mythology. Because of this, I think Chuka Taisen inspired me to make a shooting game.

Like many players of shooting games around the world, I’m a fan of Touhou Project – Japan’s famous bullet-hell shoot ‘em up series, which has been running for over 20 years. The first project of our team at DeerFarm was creating a doujin (fan-made/self-published) game of the Touhou Project.

Touhou’s creator, ZUN, gave fans permission to make these types of derivative titles, so there are many examples of them. In fact, many of these fan games have been released directly to PlayStation 4 thanks to a collaboration between ZUN and Sony Japan called Play, Doujin!

    Shikhondo – Soul Eater

Shikhondo is a reinterpretation of our very first project, a doujin game of Touhou Project called Tales of Other Eastern Yokai (東方外妖傳), but with the ‘color’ of our team. Shikhondo is one of the many games influenced by the Touhou Project, it is our fifth game, but the first that really shows the team’s own creativity. The gameplay, the Asian background, the boss characters inspired by Korean myths – that is all our originality!

Korean mythology is very interesting and provides a wealth of ideas to work with. For example, the stage 2 boss of Shikhondo is Chang-kwi (倀鬼), a yokai (demon) from Korean folklore with a very interesting story. According to legend, anyone who is killed by a tiger becomes attached to a tiger’s armpit, cheekbones and chin, and becomes a yokai. The yokai is only released if they can entice other unfortunate souls into the path of the tiger, so they too become its victims.

In Shikhondo, Chang-kwi is designed as a woman who hangs upside down from the tiger’s jaw. Here you can see what Chang-kwi looks like in the game:

    Shikhondo – Soul Eater

There are six game modes in Shikhondo, including Arcade, Boss Rush, Hardcore, and a new 2-player local co-op mode added for the PS4 version. I think the most special mode, though, is Customization, which lets you change various settings of the game. For example, you can choose how Soul Collect – the game’s attack/scoring system – is activated, either by grazing (flying close to) enemy bullets or by shooting enemies. I hope you enjoy all the various combinations on offer!

Thank you for reading, I hope you have fun playing Shikhondo – Soul Eater, and I look forward to seeing your high scores posted on the leaderboards!

  20. As we get ready for summer, Oasis Games is preparing to bring you guys a fun new party game for PS VR. It has animals! It has aliens! It has fun local multiplayer! It’s… Animal Force!

The game takes you to a cartoony alternate earth where humans are under attack by aliens. If only there were superpowered animals on a rocket that could fight back! Oh wait, there ARE superpowered animals that can save everyone—and you get to control them.

Animal Force for PS VRAnimal Force for PS VR

Using the Move controller, you’ll control a rocket that can scoop up animals and move them around to fire at attacking aliens. You can guide them yourself, drop them in a good spot to defend or just make them wiggle and spin around if that makes you happy. There are 11 animal heroes in all, ranging from Panda to Cat to Eagle to Rhino, and each have cool abilities that you can upgrade.

Your Mission Is to… Complete Missions

The single player Story mode comprises seven distinct chapters with over 30 missions total. Starting in grasslands with simple enemies, you’ll move to desert, snow and city environments, a neat island, a dangerous volcano and finally, the alien lair itself—if you and your animals survive. (You probably will; you have a PS VR and that means you’re pretty awesome.)

You can attach more than one animal hero to your rocket at one time; you can “snake” together (no pun intended) several of them at one time. Combining animals with different powers is a good idea. For instance, putting Panda with his fast DPS attack, Rhino that can freeze enemies and Pheasant’s protecting shield together can make a strong team!

    Animal Force for PS VR

Animal Force for PS VRAnimal Force for PS VR

There are 20 enemy types and seven bosses in Story mode, one boss for each chapter. You’ll encounter simple Scout enemies first and then more difficult and varied baddies that can fire at your animals, summon other enemies and otherwise make life difficult for you. There’s also a tower defense mini-game to play just for kicks.

If that sounds complicated, perhaps you need to relax for a minute and watch this video to what it looks like in action:

    But What About Your Friends?

Sounds pretty fun to play with VR, but what about your cool friends waiting for their turn? Well, up to three friends can join in for three types of local multiplayer minigames using the TV and DualShock 4 controllers.

In Steal the Statue, the DualShock players will be disguised as enemies trying to get past the VR player without getting shot. In Odd One Out, the VR player presses a button to make robots—and players trying to hide as robots—move while trying to detect the players before they escape. In Divide & Conga, the DualShock players try to collect 10 humans so they can escape on the rocket—their only problem is the VR player can zap them as in a match-3 game, making up to three humans disappear at once!

    Animal Force FTW

Animal Force will arrive on PS VR this July, bringing its special brand of zany party good times to players. Until then, we’ll be working hard to put the finishing touches on the game—can’t wait to deliver it to you!

  21. Hello everyone! This is Nathan Rowe, the founder of SculptrVR. I’m excited to announce the release of SculptrVR this Tuesday on PS VR! SculptrVR is built from the ground up to maximize your creative potential in VR. SculptrVR’s voxel engine lets you create, carve, and share insanely detailed sculptures with 10,000x zoom.

SculptrVR’s origin is three years back. When I first heard about VR with tracked controllers in the summer of 2015, I couldn’t stop imagining what kinds of creation would be possible with those tools. I was convinced that VR with tracked controllers would make 3D creation easier and more intuitive than drawing on paper ever was. Our users agree: creating 3D objects in SculptrVR is easier than drawing in 2D ever was!

Drawing recognizable objects in 2D requires training and understanding of things like perspective, outlines, and shading. In SculptrVR, you directly lay out 3D shapes, not their lines, and the graphics engine handles perspective and shading. Humans understand the world as objects, not outlines. This means even a 4-year-old can sculpt a recognizable apple, dog, television, tree, or flower.

    ScultprVR Screenshot

On PlayStation VR you have all the intuitive power that two hands reaching directly into the world gives you, and a tracked head to give full perspective and visual understanding of the scene. This makes creation intuitive, easy, and exact. When you combine that with SculptrVR’s 10,000x zoom, the power and precision in your hands is unrivaled!

Creating the right tools to express that power naturally without overwhelming the user has been a large part of our effort for the last three years. We’ve worked hard to provide an easy-to-learn, intuitive, creative experience without giving up any of the potential. So far we’ve settled on nine shapes that can be used to add and carve away material, a smoothing and bulge/deflate tool for adjusting surfaces, some painting brushes, and the copy/paste tool. We also have the ability to control the day/night cycle, multiple materials (metal, clay, and glowing), and a layer system.

    ScultprVR Screenshot

The copy/paste tool is my all-around favorite tool that we’ve created. You can think of it as the “everything brush” or a custom stamp tool. Instead of sculpting one flower at a time in a field, you can rapidly fill that field with flowers. Or create a stadium with 1,000 chairs. You can also use it as carving tool to quickly add surface texture to a flat wall.

    ScultprVR Screenshot

It usually takes about 5-10 minutes to familiarize yourself with the tools, but then you can jump right into your first masterpiece! The SculptrVR voxel engine automatically ensures that surface detail is based on time and effort spent, not the size of the sculpture you make. You can sculpt whole landscapes miles wide and spend hours adding the tiniest of details.

    ScultprVR Screenshot

For example, you can build a rocky, snow-capped mountain with a stream flowing down its face. Along the stream, barely even visible from the mountaintop, is a farmhouse. In the house is a vase full of flowers resting on the kitchen table, and on one of the flowers is a spotted ladybug. That’s the power of SculptrVR’s multi-scale voxel engine.

    ScultprVR Screenshot

When you’re done, you can save your creations to the online gallery. I spend a bit of time every day looking through the gallery to see what new creations have been uploaded. It’s incredible to browse and see some of the things users have made with SculptrVR. I can’t wait to see the creations you all upload!

We don’t think of SculptrVR as a finished, perfect product. We’re always testing out new tools to add and other new features, so please feel free to drop us a line and make suggestions! We’ve got a few things in mind to bring to SculptrVR in the next few updates. Importing reference images, exporting obj & fbx meshes, a snapping mode for geometric designs, new shapes, and even multiplayer!

I hope you all enjoy SculptrVR as much as I’ve enjoyed making it so far!

    Cheers and happy sculpting!

    -Nathan

  22. Five minutes.

It took me about five minutes to feel perfectly at home with the traversal mechanics in Marvel’s Spider-Man.

Holding R2 (the “go” button, as I came to think of it) keeps Spidey moving quickly, whether he’s sprinting on the ground, running along walls, or swinging through the air. Transitioning between swinging and wallrunning feels exhilarating.

    Marvel's Spider-Man

Pressing X while midair performs a web zip, flinging our hero in a more or less straight line forward. Mixing this technique with more traditional swinging and wall-running is a great way to get from point A to point B (or C, or D, or E…) in a matter of seconds. Once you’ve arrived, you can perch atop objects by pressing R2 and L2 simultaneously.

Simply put, traversal across Marvel’s New York feels empowering. Even before getting the hang of the swinging mechanics’ nuances, it’s really hard to, say, run into a wall and come to a stop — Spidey just adjusts on the fly and keeps running.

This feels like the game the team at Insomniac has wanted to make since they were kids. Every action in Spider-Man is instilled with flat-out joy, whether you’re careening through the skies of Manhattan or treating some thugs to an extra-spicy knuckle sandwich.

    Marvel's Spider-Man

Combat, by the way, felt plenty accessible, almost to the point that I thought I had mastered it in a paltry few minutes of practice… until I opened the “Move List” window. Holy moly! Scrolling through the rundown of moves and combos available to Spidey felt like learning a new character in a fighting game.

The demo I played taught me early on that you can press the Triangle button to zip yourself to an enemy to close distance and start a combo, or hold Triangle to pull the enemy to you. Once you’re within striking distance, you can let loose a flurry of attacks by hammering Square, or hold the button down to launch an enemy into the air. Tap Square again to follow the enemy up and begin an aerial assault, further highlighting the Wall-Crawler’s acrobatic prowess. I was even able to activate a “Suit Power” by clicking both thumbsticks simultaneously, unleashing a devastating spinning web attack against all nearby baddies.

Building up a “Focus” meter by battling foes allows you to perform flashy finishing moves (Triangle + Circle). I found this extra-useful against more threatening enemies who had body armor and weapons. Of course, you can always web-grab a nearby trash can with L1 + R1 and sling it into their face, too.

    Marvel's Spider-Man

My time with Marvel’s Spider-Man culminated in a surprisingly tough fight against Shocker (who you may have seen briefly in our new E3 Showcase trailer). He actually beat the tar out of me enough times during my first run that it kicked me out of of the demo! Naturally, I returned for a chance at vengeance. I took a bit of time to explore Marvel’s New York in my second playthrough, finding hidden backpacks that contained collectibles (like an authentic Crusher Hogan poster!) and chasing down a getaway car to foil a robbery in progress.

I didn’t forget why I was here, though. I tracked down Shocker and took another crack at him, this time noting his attack patterns and deftly dodging his shockwave attacks before zipping straight to him and unleashing a salvo of acrobatic attacks. This was a multi-phase affair, with Shocker changing attack patterns and really giving me a run for my money, but eventually our hero (and I) prevailed, ending the play session on a successful note (shout out to the booth attendees who let me finish the boss fight even though they were shutting everything down).

It was already hard to doubt Insomniac based on everything we’ve seen about Marvel’s Spider-Man thus far, but finally getting a chance to play it cemented this as one of 2018’s must-watch games. Bring on September 7.

  24. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will hit shelves October 12, and as the launch date draws closer, we wanted to shine a spotlight on the remastered maps coming to the game, as well as to Black Ops 3 if you pre-order Black Ops 4 from PlayStation Store.

The Back in Black Maps pack is a mix of fan-favorite maps from Black Ops and Black Ops 2, currently available only for PS4: “Firing Range,” “Jungle,” “Summit” and “Slums.” Now totally remastered in high-definition, each of these classic maps is hand-picked from the Black Ops portfolio and upgraded with the evolved gameplay, advanced graphical fidelity, and new mechanics of any recent Black Ops release – making for a versatile play experience.

That versatility continues with more ways for the Black Ops community to interact with their favorite maps, as players can get their hands on the Back in Black Maps pack in both Black Ops 3 and Black Ops 4 Multiplayer. And with so many upcoming changes to multiplayer in Black Ops 4 – like gritty, grounded, tactical gameplay – Back in Black Maps owners who download the pack in both releases will enjoy two different, yet equally enjoyable ways to play.

    Start Here

Those who already own Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 can immediately unlock the maps by digitally pre-ordering Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 from PlayStation Store. After pre-purchase, the maps will be available for immediate play in Black Ops 3. And upon release on October 12, the Back in Black Maps will also be playable in Black Ops 4.

Those who don’t own Black Ops 3 can still easily access the Back in Black Maps if they are members of PlayStation Plus. Just log in, and Black Ops 3 will be available to download from PlayStation Store for free until July 11. Then, get the Back in Black Maps by pre-purchasing Black Ops 4 from PlayStation Store, and explore the pack in Black Ops 3 while counting down the days to play it in Black Ops 4.

Now, let’s get reacquainted with these Black Ops community favorite maps!

    Summit

Call of Duty Back in Black Maps Pack: Summit

Set in a blizzard, atop a tightrope-thin range along the USSR’s Ural Mountains, Summit has a natural place of prominence among the Back in Black Maps. Take to this Soviet snowscape and revisit the setting that hooked the world on Black Ops, as you fight and flank your way to victory. Surrounded by steep drops into sheer nothingness, Summit works well for varying playstyles while drawing players to the highly contested map center for engaging gunfights.

    Firing Range

This close-quarters Black Ops map is set in a [CLASSIFIED] military location. With narrow vantage points, small houses and sheds, and a central tower, Firing Range is a hot, dry arena primed for fast-paced skirmishes, heart-pounding competition, and a range of combat styles.

    Jungle

Call of Duty Back in Black Maps Pack: Jungle

Another favorite map from the original Black Ops, Jungle leads players through a Vietnamese riverside village, rife with plummeting valleys, dense forest, and teetering vantage points. With winding, open lanes, tons of opportunities to flank and high verticality, Jungle is an incredible space for players to reinvent classic Black Ops gameplay.

    Slums

Call of Duty Back in Black Maps Pack: Slums

From Black Ops 2, set in 1980s Panama, the small but focused Slums map is perfect for a challenge, with zero room to flank – players face the enemy head on. SMG gunners and equipment-heads alike will find rewarding gameplay along the urban, war-torn streets, which are home to an abandoned laundromat, a desolate parking lot and a central square that hosts point “B” in Domination. Slums makes for a classic face-off-style battle, as enemy teams duck and dodge to see who dominates first.

Enjoy classic Black Ops combat locations with the Back in Black Maps, coming to Black Ops 4 October 12! Pre-order from PlayStation Store to start playing the Back in Black throwback maps in Black Ops 3 now.

  25. Of all the characters in the universe of Destiny, Cayde-6 has been one of the series’ most popular. The wise-crackin’ Hunter Vanguard has been one of Bungie’s most recognizable faces (and voices, thanks to the inimitable Nathan Fillion) for years — so why did they just kill him off during our E3 2018 Showcase?

We caught up with the project lead on Destiny 2: Forsaken, Scott Taylor, to get some answers.

    Destiny 2: Forsaken

PlayStation.Blog: Tell me about the internal discussion about killing off Cayde-6. Who pitched the idea first, and what was the room’s reaction?

Scott Taylor: There wasn’t a single lightning moment where someone unveiled a grand design about killing Cayde. It was much more organic than that and developed from a series of ideas we were trying to explore. We wanted to tell a story with huge stakes, but have those stakes be really personal to the player. We’ve done aliens trying to destroy the universe with the consequences of failure resulting in catastrophe. What if we could get that feeling with something closer to home, and more relatable? That was appealing.

“Reaction to this has been all over the place across the studio.”

We started discussing what we cared about as Guardians, and it became clear that the Vanguard had really come alive as characters for our fans. So each of the expansions over the last year have focused on them: Ikora in Curse of Osirsis, Zavala in Warmind and now Cayde in Forsaken. We haven’t taken a player off the board like this before, and we realized that the loss of Cayde would mean more to the Player than any other possible external threat we could think of. All the ideas came together and formed what became Forsaken.

Reaction to this has been all over the place across the studio. Some people are mad, sad, frustrated, excited. We think that’s appropriate. It’s a big deal, and we’re taking it seriously.

PSB: Is this going to be the main thread that carries us through the story of Forsaken?

ST: Cayde dying sets everything into motion. The Player wants revenge and as they seek it out they begin to blur the line between what is right and wrong. The Player makes alliances they normally wouldn’t in order to wipe out their enemies. You see who killed Cayde – all of them, from the Barons to Uldren – and now they’re on your list. As you check the names off you learn more about Uldren and what he is looking to achieve.

    Destiny 2: Forsaken

    Destiny 2: ForsakenDestiny 2: Forsaken

PSB: This feels like a pretty big shift for Uldren — in the first game we knew he was kind of a jerk, then he kind of disappeared after the events of The Taken King… now he’s made quite the reappearance. How long has the team been planning for this to be where he returns?

ST: We’ve been working on this direction with Uldren for awhile. I don’t want to spoil anything, but there’s more going on with him than meets the eye. He’s the hero of his own story. You learn a lot about what’s motivating Uldren, and where he’s been, as you play Forsaken.

PSB: Any word on his sister’s status / whereabouts?

ST: I don’t want to get involved in the family affairs of the Sovs. You saw what happened to Cayde.

PSB: Were any other characters on the chopping block initially when the Forsaken story started heading in this direction?

ST: Cayde always felt right once we landed on this story. His death sets the table for the journey we want to take players on. I can’t imagine any other character hitting with as much impact. It’s striking to me that we’re leading with a character death for a Destiny game, because I think it shows that we’ve established characters that are meaningful to people. It’s sad to say goodbye to Cayde, but this raises the stakes for everything. This is a living world and we are pulling Cayde out of the Tower forever. Now we have to challenge ourselves to bring in new characters that can flesh out the universe even more. We need to be taking chances with our storytelling and not playing it safe.

“This raises the stakes for everything.”

PSB: This may be the darkest, most personal premise we’ve seen in Destiny thus far. Why did the team decide to take the story in this direction?

ST: It’s important to grow and stretch different muscles. We need to be able to surprise players and evolve the universe. The stories of Uldren, Cayde and the Player came together in this really powerful way that felt like it could only be told by getting personal. Grittier than before. We are excited to embrace it and we hope our players are, too.

Destiny 2: Forsaken launches on September 4 on PS4. Learn more about it here.
