  1. Amazing visuals and an intriguing concept – if you were watching the PlayStation Media Showcase during Paris Games Week, you can’t have failed to notice Concrete Genie, Pixelopus’ unique third person 3D action adventure, which stole everybody’s heart.

It’s only the studio’s second title (after Entwined) but it’s already cementing itself as one of 2018’s bright spots on PlayStation 4. As lonely protagonist Ash, you’re tasked with bringing a polluted town back to life with magic paint, by using the Dualshock 4’s motion controls to freely draw friendly and helpful creatures on its crumbling walls.

There’s a lot to feel good about in the game, so here’s six reasons why Concrete Genie should put a smile on anyone’s face.

    Concrete Genie

Listen to the score of Concrete Genie’s announce trailer, debuted at Paris Games Week 2017. Written by Pixelopus’ composer and audio director, Sam Marshall.

    1. It’s about the power of creativity

Development for Concrete Genie started in 2015, born from the desire to tell a tale which showed how empowering the feeling of creation can be.

“We had a lot of combined experiences in the team to help inspire the game,” says creative director Dominic Robilliard. “One of our designers comes from a fishing town in China where the children painted lots of bright drawings on the walls to make the town more beautiful and lively.

“I also took inspiration from the long history of my hometown Bristol’s urban illustration and street art, which is where artists like Banksy and Inkie are from. We wanted to celebrate that expression of joy and freedom via Ash bringing his paintings to life.”

    Concrete Genie

    2. There’s a positive, universal message

The sensitive subject of bullying isn’t an easy one to tackle, but Pixelopus’ game is handling it with a thoughtful tone where the darkness of Ash’s struggles are balanced against the vibrancy brought about by his creativity.

“During the early stages of conception, our VFX artist created a picture of a boy painting characters on a wall to stand up to bullies,” explains Dominic. “That sparked a lot of conversation, and we all started sharing individual stories of bullying.

“Between that and our experimentation with painting, we thought we could make a really interesting exploration of that theme. There’s darkness there, but there’s also optimism in Ash’s journey against the bullies, which the player takes a meaningful part in.”

Not only that, but Concrete Genie also delivers an ecological theme as Ash’s beautiful living artwork cleans up his desolate and polluted town. As you advance through the game you can return to previously completed areas and use different paint styles and brushes to improve the environment.

    Concrete Genie

    3. You don’t need to be an artist

If your artistic talent only stretches to stick figures, don’t worry. Pixelopus’ design philosophy is very clear: with the Dualshock 4’s motion controls, everyone can create something amazing.

“We’ve carefully selected all the artistic elements so you don’t have to think about layers or anything too complicated when creating pretty landscapes,” says Dominic. “There’s no penalty or requirement to paint in any particular way. It just works for someone like me, who can’t draw. But if you are artistic, you can still orchestrate that image the way you want.”

“And there’s no pressure to make a perfect illustration,” adds Art Director Jeff Sangalli. “The game doesn’t judge you, and you can be abstract if you want. So if you want flowers hanging upside down, coming from the sky, or create a creature with 50 tails and horns growing from those tails, that’s fine!”

    Concrete Genie

    4. Your artwork really is living… and reacting

Ash’s paintings don’t just look pretty – they have physics and, in the case of the creatures, artificial intelligence. So your painted lily pads will spread out and bloom over time, while a sun or moon will illuminate the rest of the elements in your illustration. You can even add weather effects, like rain and thunderstorms.

And the creatures you create sport a variety of personalities and attributes based on how you draw them, although most will happily interact with each other and your landscapes, peeking around the trees you paint, going for a swim, picking leaves off the ground, using flowers as an umbrella… and that’s just for starters.

“The creatures get sad when you leave, and are happy when you come back,” says Jeff. “And when I’m painting an environment, they’ll follow and watch what you’re doing. You can call out to them as well and sometimes they’ll come over, if they feel like it!”

“Sometimes you’re never sure how a creature will react,” laughs Dominic. “When I was creating the PGW trailer, I would start painting to capture a scene and another creature would suddenly come into shot and photobomb it! It’s fun to see these unexpected things happen and when you have a base set of systemic interactions, you get these wonderful emergent reactions.”

    Concrete Genie

    5. Sharing is caring

Given all the unique possibilities of your creation, it’s only fitting that Pixelopus wants you to spread the joy.

“Because you can paint freely anywhere in the game world, everyone’s towns will look different,” says Dominic. “So we really hope players will use the social features of PS4 and share their versions of the town. We’re looking into other ways that may help you share your creations, too…”

    6. The team is already buzzing off your buzz

After the great initial reaction to Concrete Genie, Pixelopus is even more energised to get the game in your hands.

“The PlayStation Showcase was a really emotional ride,” says Dominic. “We videoed the whole experience and wrote a long email to the team back home. It’s been a great burst of enthusiasm and inspiration to get this out there, especially with the response being so great.

“The team’s mission is still the same – we want to give newcomers to the industry the perfect start to making games, and that’s something that we still hold on to very dearly.

“There are less than 20 of us in the core team and we all wear our hearts on our sleeves when it comes to the game – the optimism and the style of tone that Concrete Genie offers is something precious to us.”

  2. Hello everyone! This is Shawn from Against Gravity, makers of Rec Room. We launched the Rec Room PlayStation VR closed beta last month and the response from the community has been incredible! In order to include as many people as possible in the beta we’ve decided to launch in open beta at PlayStation Store on Tuesday, November 21.

    Rec Room for PS VR

Rec Room is a virtual reality social club where you can play games with friends from all around the world. Both the open beta and full release will be free and feature cross platform play! We’ve also created an exclusive paintball burst rifle skin for PlayStation Plus members, although Rec Room does not require PlayStation Plus to play.

When you launch Rec Room for the first time you’ll start in your dorm room where you can create and stylize your avatar. From there you can head out into the Rec Center to interact with players from around the world or go straight into one of the many activities. Rec Room features paintball, epic co-op quests and adventures, disc golf, charades, and more.

Rec Room for PS VRRec Room for PS VR

If you’re more of the creative type check out the maker pen, sandbox machine, and custom rooms. Custom rooms allow you to host your own private instance of any Rec Room activity. You can enable sandbox mode to decorate your space, create minigames, or host events! We’re always expanding our suite of creative tools and are looking forward to seeing what the PS VR community creates.

One of our core principles at Against Gravity is that we ship quickly and iterate constantly. We like to learn by trying new things and listening to our players. Along with hanging out in-game and monitoring all of our forums and social channels, we hold a developer Q&A event in the Rec Room theater every two weeks.

One question we get a lot at these events is “When will there be a new quest, and what will it be!?”. Rec Room quests are challenging co-op adventures where up to four players must defeat a series of monsters, puzzles, and other challenges as a team. Today we thought we would show a piece of concept art for the next quest we’re working on. Expect to see this pirate-themed quest go live sometime in early 2018.

    Rec Room for PS VR

We can’t wait to welcome all of you into the Rec Room community and we look forward to hearing your feedback during the beta. Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you in game!

  3. What if your loved ones suddenly vanished? What if you realized your most precious memories were slowly slipping away?

Such is the premise of Lost Sphear, the second project from Square Enix’s Tokyo RPG Factory, the studio that hopes its latest genre entry will also stir the memories of those of us reared on 90’s RPGs.

When Square Enix unveiled the studio at E3 back in 2015, its unspoken objective seemed clear: to create games that captured the spirit of the publisher’s earliest works – Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana. The games that made fans fall in love with Square in the first place. It’s a design philosophy that shaped the studio’s debut, I Am Setsuna, as well as this new genre entry, which will also stir the memories of those of us reared on 90’s RPGs.

If the brief hands-on I had at a recent event is representative of the full game, then the studio looks set to achieve that goal; I count myself as one of those players, and the game’s adherence to classic genre values strongly resonated with me during the play session.

But even if you’ve never played any of the entries from that era, you may find the studio’s love letter to the past – turn-based gameplay, charming cast, melancholic story, vibrant hand-painted art and piano-based music – something to treasure.

We had the chance to ask Lost Sphear’s Director, Atsushi Hashimoto, a few questions about this new title and the vision behind it.

Why a studio was created to re-imagine the classic RPG for a new generation

What makes this era so important to you and what do you feel it offers to an audience that they might not find in other games?

Hashimoto: “At Tokyo RPG Factory we want to make the kind of games that will not lose their lustre after ten years or more, and the types of games that remain in our own memories like those RPGs that we played in the 90’s. The fact that these games very much continue to influence us is a big reason.

“In the RPGs of the 90’s, there was a lot more room for player interpretation about how the characters they were playing actually felt during their adventures. You don’t really see many games like that nowadays, so we want people to be able to enjoy filling in the gaps with their imagination in our games.”

    Lost Sphear

It’s been a long time since this classic type of games was popular – how have the vast improvements in technology allowed you to develop the genre? Has it allowed you to do things that might not have been possible in the PS1/PS2 era?

Hashimoto: ”Thanks to the advances in technology, we were able to realize the unique graphical depictions in all the game’s detailed backgrounds, with their special hand-drawn feel. We chose this hand-drawn style for the visuals of Lost Sphear, but nowadays we really have a lot more options to choose from for the graphics, so there are many more ways we can stimulate the imagination of players. I think that was something that was difficult to do in the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 era.”

What are the biggest challenges with trying to bring back a classic genre and re-imagining it for a new audience that may be more familiar with contemporary styles? When you’re creating these games, do you think more about creating something for the players who fondly remember these games or are you targeting players who missed out on these sorts of games in the past?

Hashimoto: ”We try to be aware of what the older players who played all those classic RPGs back in the 90’s are after, while at the same time also want younger players to play our games too, so it takes quite a while to find that perfect sweet spot. It is very hard trying to decide what needs changing and what cannot be changed. With I Am Setsuna, there was a bit of a gap between our vision about the game and those of the actual players – a few people were surprised by the absence of inns for example – so we took a lot of the player feedback from Setsuna into account when developing Lost Sphear.”

    Lost SphearLost Sphear

Refining the formula from I Am Setsuna

Is Lost Sphear an entirely new story or can players expect to find hints from I Am Setsuna?

Hashimoto: ”The story of Lost Sphear is completely unrelated to that of I Am Setsuna and has been developed as a completely new game in its own right, so you don’t have to have played I Am Setsuna in order to enjoy it 100%. Having said that, some of the terminology used in I Am Setsuna is carried over into Lost Sphear, so those who have played I Am Setsuna may be able to read something a little deeper into it. You are free to let your imaginations run wild about the two games of course, and I would be delighted to see people doing so!”

A lot of people really related to the characters in I Am Setsuna – were you tempted to make a direct sequel? What informed the decision to start with a new story?

Hashimoto: ”We considered the story in I Am Setsuna to be complete in itself, so we didn’t want to try to fix something that was not broken by doing a sequel. Accordingly, we decided from the first planning stages to carry over some of the same concepts from Setsuna while developing a completely new RPG in its own right.”

    Lost Sphear

Lost Sphear’s battle system and soundtrack

Can you tell us a little bit about how Lost Sphear’s battle system differs from the one in I Am Setsuna? What was the gameplay focus when creating Lost Sphear?

Hashimoto: ”The easiest change to understand is how you can now move about freely during battle. There were many people who played I Am Setsuna who said it would have been nice to be able to do that, so we altered the system based on their feedback. In addition, another new element unique to Lost Sphear is that you can now ride in Vulcosuit exo-armour and use an array of special ‘Paradigm Drive’ attacks that have different effects for each character.

“The core of the gameplay in Lost Sphear is linked to the key word of “memory” that we set down to inform the whole game. The idea of “memory” plays a very important role in the events of Lost Sphear’s story, but it also runs throughout the gameplay itself. You can use memory items on the world map to create artefacts and apply various special effects to battles and some other aspects of the game. I think these mechanics will give players great experiences that you cannot get in other games.”

    Lost Sphear

I Am Setsuna had a very distinctive piano based soundtrack that received a lot of praise. Can you tell us a little bit about Lost Sphear’s soundtrack?

Hashimoto: ”The music for I Am Setsuna was very well received, so we decided right from the start that we would go for largely piano-based music for Lost Sphear as well. However, Lost Sphear has a lot more variation in the field locations you can visit in comparison with I Am Setsuna, so we eventually settled on a concept of having each track done with a piano and one other instrument for each piece. In this way we managed to carry over what made Setsuna’s music so good, while also taking on the challenge of creating something new as well.”

What’s the one thing you’d really like to achieve with Lost Sphear that you didn’t get a chance to do in I Am Setsuna?

Hashimoto: ”It is something quite small, but I would have to say including inns. It was not just that of course, and with I Am Setsuna we set the level of civilisation and technological development pretty low and made it so that there were very few fellow travellers in that world. This led us to not include a number of features that are very standard in most RPGs. With Lost Sphear, we put many of those classic “must have” RPG elements back and hope to see knowing smiles from the people who played the RPGs of the 90’s.”

    Lost Sphear

Last question, if you had a chance to ‘remake’ or ‘create a new chapter for’ one classic franchise, which would it be?

Hashimoto:  “The Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and SaGa series that have all had a huge influence on me are all still going, so if you exclude those then it becomes a very difficult question indeed, but I would probably have to say Xenogears.”

  6. In bringing the “League of War” universe to PS VR, MunkyFun had a number of options. We wanted the game to be “pick up and play” for anyone, while also having deeper strategy for the more serious gamers. But one of the biggest considerations for us was to push hard on developing the two-player head to head aspect of the game, to effectively bring “Social” to VR.

    League of War: VR Arena

For many of us in the game community, nothing screams “video game fun” more than a couple of friends on a couch, competitively mashing their buttons and joysticks at each other. Whether it’s a pair of fighters duking it out in the street, or a classic sports game, video game consoles have been built for head-to-head gaming for almost 40 years now.

And that’s the experience we wanted to bring to the PS VR with League of War: VR Arena.

A key component of Sony PS VR is the Social Screen in the living room. So we went to work. At a minimum, your non-gamer friends can now follow your exploits close up on the battlefield by using the interactive spectator camera that we implemented for the Social Screen.

But most importantly, for your gaming family and friends, we are proud to say that we have implemented an Arcade mode that allows the Social Screen player to enter into head-to-head play with the VR player. How does it work?

    League of War: VR Arena

With the Social Screen, League of War players don’t have to passively sit on the sidelines while their VR headset-wearing buddy is blowing up wave after wave of virtual tanks and choppers. By simply grabbing a standard Dualshock controller and pressing a button, League of War allows players to jump into the game and challenge their VR pals head-to-head for military supremacy. It’s the primal arcade experience, brought to the world of VR.

So grab a friend, download League of War: VR Arena, and start having fun blowing each other to smithereens – it’s the Social VR experience you’ve been waiting for.

  8. What would happen if Pac-Man got fatter while he ate? At some point he’d go big, he’d get stuck in the maze, right? How would you get unstuck? In Pig Eat Ball you get to barf your way back down to size!

    Pig Eat Ball

Get fatter while you eat! Barf as a last resort!

    Scarf and Barf

There are hundreds of action-puzzle levels in Pig Eat Ball. And in each one you simply need to eat all the balls in the level to win. But things get tricky here! As you eat, you’ll get fatter. And sometimes you’ll need to barf and shrink back down to size to fit through certain areas. But you’ll still need eat all the balls—even those barf-covered ones!

Growing fat, getting stuck, and barfing is the first twist in the game. But I’ve worked with my small team for 4 years to pack in tons of interesting gameplay. I love the feeling of getting to a new world in a game and seeing ALL NEW things. New art! New enemies and NPCs to interact with! In Pig Eat Ball there are five GIANT worlds like this and each one is packed with new fun things to do.

The challenge in the game is moderate. This is not the Dark Souls of anything (okay maybe of Pac-Man?) What keeps the game interesting to keep playing is the heaps of hand-crafted levels, and the balance between exploration and chaotic action.

    Pig Eat Ball

Each world has some really bizarre boss fights!

    Fast Action, Bit of Puzzle

Besides fighting cool monsters, I love games with exciting secrets. I want something cool to find! Not just basic collectables. So in Pig Eat Ball we have “disguises”. In the story, your character “Bow” is incognito, entering into a special contest. She has to wear a disguise the whole time. These disguises are not only fun because they change your appearance, they also alter your gameplay!

Each disguise has at least one Pro and one Con. For instance, the Robot Head disguise has a Pro of “ball magnetism” (which is great!) but a Con of lowering your ball suction. When you find a new disguise hidden in an over-world, it’s a big treasure!

I personally love big adventure games like Super Mario Galaxy, or Okami, or Ratchet and Clank series. Fun fact, I worked on a few R&C’s for Insomniac Games years ago!

    Secrets at Your Pace

Basically I like classic action games that are set in a big, adventure-filled world, that you can keep coming back to night after night, unfolding the story and making progress. So in Pig Eat Ball, we have a robust level editor that let us create all sorts of action-based “light-puzzle” levels. We also carefully managed how long they take to beat.

    Pig Eat Ball

This is merely part of 1/4th of over-world 2!

That brings me to speed running! I can remember back in college, playing Sonic CD and competing with my roommate for the best times on each level. It was so fun to eke out just another half-second and get the new fastest time. For Pig Eat Ball, we’ve made sure all the levels fit the “fun for new players but also great for speed-running” mentality. I love figuring out a new trick in one of our levels and getting through it even faster.

    PEB on PS4

I’d love to come back and tell you more! Arcade homages! Party mode! Stories of unrest among the native Pillbug inhabitants!

But for now, I’m searching for those interested in the same sort of game. Do you like action-puzzle games like Super Monkey Ball? Have you ever wanted to barf on everything? Do you like exploring overworlds and looking for secrets? (Anyone remember Transformers on the PS2? Great exploration!)

    Pig Eat Ball

I love tricky levels like this, with so many moving parts and new things to figure out!

Do you like mechanical, clock-like levels that are fun to figure out? Then keep your eye on Pig Eat Ball coming to PS4 in Spring 2018!

  10. Making his MLB debut with the New York Yankees in 2016, Aaron Judge hit a home run during his career’s first at bat, but this was only the beginning. Judge went on to have a record-breaking rookie season in 2017, was named an All-Star, and won the Home Run Derby, overcoming a brutal 22 homer first-round and hitting a total of 47 throughout the derby. 16 of those with exit velocities of 115 mph or harder and a few 500+ foot blasts.

His homer off the roof of Marlin Stadium even defies physics and scientific calculations!

To add to his already massive resume, Judge has hit 52 home runs as a rookie, breaking legendary Mark McGwire’s MLB rookie record of 49; and also hit 33 home runs at Yankee Stadium, breaking the record of 32 set by legend Babe Ruth in 1921. This rookie is the living, breathing example of Road to the Show – create a player with massive stats and trek on to becoming a legend – which is why we are proud to announce him as the cover athlete for The Show 18.

MLB The Show 18 Box Art

In addition to The Judge gracing the US cover, for Canadians, we’re happy to announce the exclusive Canadian cover of MLB The Show 18 featuring Marcus Stroman!

Stroman was drafted in the 1st round in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays and made his Major League debut on May 6, 2014 and made his first Major League start on May 31, 2014, pitching six innings and surrendered only one earned run on five hits, striking out six and issuing no walks to earn the win over the Kansas City Royals.

A fan favorite, he is known for his grit and determination. He has dedicated his life to overcoming obstacles and showing people that greatness isn’t measured in what others think of you; what’s important is who you think you are and working hard to achieve your goals.

Get ready to smash it out of the park when MLB The Show 18 launches on March 27, 2018! The Standard Edition is MSRP $59.99 USD/79.99 CAD.

  11. Now that PlayStation’s big Paris Games Week announcements are out in the wild, it’s time to talk about a little something we like to call PSX! The fourth edition of the PlayStation community event with return to the Anaheim Convention Center in California this December 9 and 10, so if you haven’t already… go get your ticket!

First, a question. Are you currently holding an Early Bird ticket for PlayStation Experience? Good — that means you’ll be granted access to an exclusive presentation at the Anaheim Convention Center the evening of Friday, December 8 starting at 8:00pm Pacific Time.

In this opening presentation, PlayStation Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden will provide an update to attendees, we’ll meet some special guests, along with a few surprises and game updates. Should be fun!

Then, on December 9 and 10, PlayStation Experience will open to general ticket holders starting at 10:00am. And this year’s experience is shaping up to be truly unique!

In addition to hands-on gameplay with the next wave of PS4 and PS VR games, attendees will dive deeper into some of PlayStation’s biggest games by means of immersive interactive experiences that blend the world of game and reality. I’m dying to say more… but it’s a bit too soon to share details. Stay tuned!

In addition, we’ll be featuring a new slate of panels that reveal more developer insights into some of the biggest announcements coming out of Paris Games Week and beyond. We’re still finalizing the full list of participating developers, but you can count on some of Worldwide Studios’ biggest and brightest making an appearance, including Sucker Punch Productions, Media Molecule, and more. Want to learn more about Ghost of Tsushima and Dreams? Then PSX is where you need to be.

This year, we’ve expanded the overall show floor space by about 50% to accommodate all these new activities, which will also include new competition areas for GT Sport, a larger PlayStation Gear Store with merchandise unavailable online and more.

We’ll have many more details to share in the following weeks, including more info on developer panels, autograph signings, merchandise updates, Capcom Cup, other activities and more.

Until then, I’ll be watching and rewatching that Ghost of Tsushima announcement trailer. More soon!

  12. Hello from Zen Studios! We’re very excited to announce Out of Ammo for PlayStation VR, which you can pre-order starting tomorrow and also get a free copy of CastleStorm VR! This intense virtual reality experience features a unique mix of genres, allowing you to both plan your base-building carefully to ensure survival against waves of enemies, while also pitting you against difficult odds in FPS-style combat.

This game caught our attention on PC, where it was released by RocketWerkz — a company founded by the creator of DayZ. We at Zen liked it so much, we worked with them to make sure it could reach the PS VR audience as well — because it deserves to be played by as many gamers as possible!

    Plan and Execute Your Defense

Try out Survival, the main game mode of Out of Ammo where you’ll act as a general on the field of battle by building up an unbreachable base, issuing commands to your troops, placing buildings in key spots, and calling in bombing runs. But you’re not just the general!

    24197297578_39f05f9ca8_z.jpg

Take direct control of your soldiers to defend yourself hands-on and make short work of the baddies with a variety of unit types and weapons. Get in the role of a Rifleman firing a fully automatic weapon, or be the cold and calculating Sniper and pick off enemies from afar. Help your comrades as the Medic, blast holes in the enemy line with the Rocketeer, or maintain your fortifications and spray shells with a shotgun as the Engineer!

Put your command to the test, spanning eight different locations — each different in look, feel, and gameplay. Survive the tight spaces and enemy ambushes of City warfare, test your skills on the open plains of the Desert where the dunes offer no protection, or battle on the others like Beachhead, Alpine, Port, Forest, and Contact.

Sometimes You Just Wanna Shoot Stuff

Survive behind enemy lines in Icarus. You’ve crash-landed in enemy territory, and help is far away. Played entirely in first-person, this intense game mode challenges you to scavenge and loot ammo and supplies to survive until being evacuated.

In Vertigo, you’ll infiltrate a luxurious villa to hack into a computer that has vital information. Can you put in the necessary codes to complete the process while defending yourself against the guards?

    37340383914_a9b519d18f_z.jpg

Get in the thick of battle with the Overwatch mode, where you play in first person as a lonely sniper, the last hope of the passengers of a downed chopper. Protect the evacuees from your vantage point in the clock tower with weapons and gadgets at your disposal. Become a hero and help every passenger get to safety!

Be the strategist or the soldier! This Playstation VR experience will keep you on edge as you struggle for survival. Defend your base, survive, shoot, duck into cover, and — of course — reload so you don’t run… Out of Ammo!

And in case you missed it up top, you can pre-order Out of Ammo and receive a free copy of CastleStorm VR! Why not try out some other great PS VR games from Zen Studios while you’re at it? We’re proud of our library, which also includes Pinball FX2 and Infinite Minigolf.

Lock and load. Out of Ammo will launch in winter 2018!

  13. We’re thrilled to announce that Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds is out November 7 at PlayStation Store! This expansion for Horizon Zero Dawn adds a companion story to Aloy’s adventure, leading her deep into the icy borderlands of the Banuk tribe. To celebrate the launch, we’ve prepared an exciting new trailer that shows the dangers Aloy will be facing.

Naturally, we can’t wait for you to dive into the new expansion content — and since you’re probably as eager as we are, we’ve collected a few handy tips to put you on the right track:

    1.) Load Your Latest Save
You don’t need to start a brand-new game just to access Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds. The expansion content is available regardless of whether you’re on your very first playthrough or on your latest New Game+.

    2.) Check Your Level
We tuned Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds for players with an experience level of 30 or higher. While it’s possible to access the expansion content if your level is below this threshold, you may find that Aloy’s lack of skills and/or equipment becomes too great a challenge. If that’s the case, try completing a few quests in the base game until you’ve sufficiently leveled up.

3.) Complete the Quest “A Seeker at the Gates”
Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds adds a whole new region known as The Cut, which becomes accessible after you’ve completed the quest A Seeker at the Gates. If you’re at level 30 you most likely already completed this quest, but if you’re not sure you can check its completion status in the Quests menu.

    26348586769_1cb3e3ccba_z.jpg

    4.) Find a Quest-Giver
To receive directions to the new region known as The Cut, speak with one of the three quest-givers added to the base game region. These quest-givers appear with a blue quest start marker over their head. They’re located in the following areas:

    • Rhavid, a Carja nobleman with information and speculation about the Banuk borderlands, can be found outside Meridian.
    • Ohtur, who knows how to get to The Cut, can be found inside the Carja border fort known as Daytower.
    • Yariki, a Banuk woman with a dire warning about the dangers found in the borderlands, can be found north of the Grave Hoard.

    5.) Survive the Frozen Wilds
Between the inhospitable environment and the dangerous new machines, Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds offers a greater challenge than the base game — so make sure you bring the right skills, outfits, and weapons.

Above all, we hope you have as much fun diving back into the world of Aloy as we did creating this expansion! Let us know what you think in the comments.

  16. hen Shadow of the Colossus made its memorable debut back in 2005, it managed something refreshingly different in modern games at the time – it changed the narrative. During an era where visual fidelity was going through a seismic shift on PlayStation 2, this title kept its story minimalistic and its gameplay pure: hunt the looming colossi one-by-one.

But when it was announced at E3 2017 that Bluepoint Games and JAPAN Studio were remaking the game for PlayStation 4, the excitement was tangible. Because even though Shadow of the Colossus thrives on minimalism, the power of PS4 Pro makes a suitably colossal difference to just how affecting this already emotional game is.

    1. It’s big on detail

You’ve likely already seen the beautiful new opening cut scene – but it’s something else to witness the in-game visuals when Shadow of the Colossus starts. At Paris Games Week I was given the chance to track down and battle three colossi to get a good idea of how some of the different environments look. From battered ruins, to a barren sea shore, to a dusky desert, each location is rich with detail.

    GAMETITLE

Pebbles crumble under Wander’s hands as he clambers up fragile rock faces. His faithful steed Agro leaves footprints in the sand which eventually disappear in the wind. Blue butterflies dance between the leaves of a sun-dappled woodland. All the while you gallop through to the target: a magnificent, intimidating colossus that (for the most part) wants nothing more to be left alone.

    2. The colossi pack an almighty punch

And if you thought each colossus was impressive on the PS3 re-release, then wait until you see these magnificent beasts on PS4 Pro. Their fur rustles in the wind and deforms as Wander does his best to cling to it, while each movement is slickly animated to further convey the sheer size and power bearing down on you.

Smart use of lighting, motion blur and depth of field effects only help to completely throw you into the desperate and frightening battles you’re in.

    3. Streamlined controls make it easier to play

Bluepoint Games hasn’t just settled on a visual make over, either. The controls have cleverly tweaked to improve the gameplay experience.

    GAMETITLE

The PS4’s touch pad handily lets you bring up a map, while jump has been moved to the X button instead of the triangle button. The dodge roll is also now mapped to the circle button, making it easier to deploy than the previous R1 + triangle combo.

    4. But you can still play with classic controls

Although purists still have the option to go back to the classic controls, these changes show the developer’s willingness to make the game as accessible as possible, while retaining familiar quirks for veterans.

    GAMETITLE

And as such, it all feels natural and intuitive. Crucially, although moved, Wander’s grab button (which you’ll be using a lot – no, seriously) is still located on the Dualshock 4’s shoulder (R2), meaning clinging to a colossus for dear life is still as terrifyingly intense as it always has been.

    5. It’s every bit as beautiful as you remember

Which is all to say, the restrained core of Shadow of the Colossus remains, but the considered controls and restructured visuals have underlined the unforgettable beauty of it. When Wander and Agro tenderly look at each other in a brief respite when you leave the Dualshock 4 controller alone for moment, it’s hard not to just let them linger a bit longer in peace. And as each colossus falls and those emotive strings strike up, it’s all the more haunting.

    GAMETITLE

If you’ve played Shadow of the Colossus before, the power of the unaltered original story will still make sure you feel the gut-wrenching remorse of every act of violence… but now it’s even more heightened on PS4. After our battle with the 13th colossus, staring at Wander’s dirt-stained clothes and haggard demeanour, I was instantly brought back to the feelings that made the original so memorable.

Shadow of the Colossus has found a perfect partner in Bluepoint Games, where the title’s elegance has only been elevated by a stunning visual overhaul. The only real question is whether your soul can handle the emotions of what awaits on 7th February 2018 when the game releases on PS4.

  17. With the launch of The Frozen Wilds approaching faster than a charging Thunderjaw, we’re extremely excited to share gameplay footage of the brand-new expansion for Horizon Zero Dawn with you. In the video, Guerrilla Principal Quest Designer Tim Stobo and Quest Designer Blake Rebouche demonstrate one of the quests from the expansion called The Survivor.

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds takes place in the Cut, an icy wasteland where clans of the Banuk tribe known as Weraks seek to prove their worth against the elements and the machines. At the start of the quest Aloy meets with the Chieftain of the White Teeth Werak, who informs her that two White Teeth hunters have gone missing. Aloy decides to investigate their fate — and in the process, crosses paths with a dangerous new machine…

Horizon Zero Dawn veterans will want to keep an eye out for a few things in this new footage. First of all, you’ll notice new weather effects in the Cut. We really wanted to bring across how bitter and relentless the cold is through the dynamic nature of the wind and snow particles, and the way in which they can affect visibility. Additional immersion comes from the interaction between the characters and the deformable layer of fallen snow.

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds

Also, if you see Aloy doing something you don’t remember her being capable of in the main game, that’s probably because she has new skills she can learn as she levels up. Discovering and unlocking those skills will be greatly satisfying for players who hit the level cap in Horizon Zero Dawn and craved more room to grow.

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds will be available at PlayStation Store on November 7, but you can pre-order a copy today and receive an exclusive PlayStation 4 avatar. To stay up to date on all things Horizon Zero Dawn and The Frozen Wilds, keep an eye on PlayStation.Blog.

  20. Next week sees the release of The Frozen Wilds, an expansion for Horizon Zero Dawn that adds a dangerous new environment for players to explore. The expansion is set in the icy wasteland known as ‘The Cut’, where the bravest hunters of the Banuk tribe test themselves against the elements and the machines, but only few live to tell the tale. Their tales, however, are of great interest to Aloy…

For the team at Guerrilla, Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds was an opportunity to go back and delve into the culture of one of Horizon Zero Dawn’s most mysterious tribes. Although the Banuk didn’t feature prominently in the base game, the tribe’s rugged individuality, nomadic existence and harmonious relationship with natural and machine life set it apart them from all of the other tribes.

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen WildsHorizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds

The developers went to great lengths to create tribes that would feel believable and at home in the environments they inhabited, and the Banuk tribe was no exception. In the video interview above, Studio Art Director Jan-Bart van Beek, Narrative Director John Gonzalez, Lead Concept Artist Roland IJzermans and Lead Writer Ben McCaw talk about the development of the Banuk tribe, and the ways in which Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds builds on the foundations laid in Horizon Zero Dawn.

You’ll be able to explore the Cut and discover the unique culture of the Banuk tribe for yourself when Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds launches on November 7th. If you pre-order your copy from the PlayStation Store today you will also receive an exclusive PS4 avatar! To stay up to date on the latest developments related to Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds, keep an eye on the PlayStation Blog and remember to follow Guerrilla on Twitter and Facebook.

Coming up tomorrow morning, new characters, environments and enemies will be shown off in the first The Frozen Wilds play through video. See you then!

  21. On November 14, For Honor enters Season Four with the launch of Order & Havoc – a new update that adds two new Heroes, two new maps, new modes, and more to the war between Samurai, Vikings, and Knights. And if you haven’t yet jumped onto For Honor’s battlefields to outwit other players with its innovative Art of Battle system, PlayStation Plus members can play for free from November 9-12, giving you a chance to hone your skills ahead of Season Four’s launch.

Headlining Order & Havoc are its new Heroes: the Aramusha, a ronin-like Hybrid for the Samurai faction; and the Shaman, a lightning-fast Assassin for the Vikings. Inspired by historical samurai Miyamoto Musashi, the Aramusha wields dual katanas and is capable at offense and defense, able to chain together fast attacks and counter when the enemy least expects it.

For Honor, Season IVFor Honor, Season IV

“The Aramusha is like the sea,” says Game Director Damien Kieken. “He can be very calm, nearly static, and then go mad and stormy and unleash a very fast mix-up on you if you upset him.”

The Shaman, meanwhile, looks similar to the Berserker, but has the ability to stalk opponents and strike quickly for massive damage. Carrying a hatchet and a dagger, the Shaman’s bestial fighting style is inspired by predatory animals. Also, stabbing her enemies with her dagger can deal bleed damage, which in turn triggers her Blood Trance, enabling her to pounce on her opponent to deliver a potentially deadly strike, or to attack with multiple smaller strikes that each heal the Shaman. Both new Heroes will be available immediately to Season Pass holders on November 14, while other players can unlock them for 15,000 Steel (For Honor’s in-game currency) each starting November 21.

    For Honor, Season IV

New fighters are just the beginning of what Season Four adds. Two new maps, Gauntlet and Market Town, will be available free to all players on November 14. Gauntlet is a Viking stronghold designed to channel attackers directly into the defenders’ fortifications, with a massive trench built to funnel invaders into a Killing Field where they can be picked off by attacks from above. Market Town, meanwhile, is based on a campaign level with rooftop playing fields, and adds a new gameplay feature: the zipline, which lets you quickly traverse the map or drop down to attack other players below.

Finally, there’s Tribute, a new 4v4 multiplayer mode in which players battle to claim three Offerings and bring them to a Shrine. Each Shrine imparts a different buff when given an Offering, which is granted to the entire team and adds a new dimension of strategy to the battle.

“In this mode, more than in any other modes, the final outcome is up in the air until the match is over,” says Kieken. “Even if you’re down 3-0, you can still come back if your team plans and executes a comeback plan correctly. I’ve been in many matches where we were in Win Confirmation, a short time period during which the winning team must maintain their win, only to steal an Offering with one or two seconds left, and go on to win the match. It’s the best feeling in the world, really.”

    For Honor, Season IV

Season Four also brings new gear and gameplay updates – including the ability to equip up to four executions – as well as a Ranked Dominion mode, which will be added later in the season. Before Season Four’s launch, new players will get a chance to test their mettle during the free weekend, which begins at 12:00 a.m. PT on November 9 (with pre-loading available starting at 9 p.m. PT on November 6), and runs through 12:00 a.m. PT on November 13. That gives you four days to play all of For Honor’s standard-edition content, including its campaign and multiplayer modes, all while earning gear and building up any of its 16 Heroes – including the recently added Shinobi, Centurion, Gladiator, and Highlander, who are unlockable for 15,000 Steel each.

If you want to keep your momentum going after the free weekend is over, For Honor will be on sale for up to 60% off until 12:00 a.m. PT on November 20. Nine months of updates and player feedback have honed For Honor into a fast, feature-rich experience, making this the perfect time to dive in. So grab your weapon of choice, grit your teeth, and get ready to storm the battlefields for free.

  24. After 10 years of development, Owlboy is finally launching February 13, 2018 on PS4!

Working on Owlboy has been a highly personal journey for us. Each year of delay was a new blow to our hope of ever seeing the game released. You guys are the sole reason why we’ve finally been able to push through!

We decided early to start showing the game around. The first appearance of Owlboy was in 2008, when we launched the initial trailer. We are still humbled by the response we got. It changed our lives, and we decided to start traveling to show as much as we could of our work. Each time we witnessed someone pick up the controller and start playing our game, we forgot about all those years of fading hope.

    37245160294_7c0b4ac6a1_z.jpg

Owlboy was created with the previous generation of consoles in mind, and once the PS4 was announced, we had to make sure that the game still looked brilliant. About half-way through development we decided to up the resolution of the game, so it will still look great in full HD and even 4K.

One thing that has stuck with us is the great feedback we’ve gotten while on our travels. You can look at the old footage of Owlboy and easily spot the changes it’s been going through over the years. Each time we visit a new convention or an expo, we return home with a scrapbook full of useful feedback. This is exactly what we hope to gain more of when we launch our game to console for the first time ever.

    37245160344_2a7fc13246_z.jpg

Owlboy would have never been what it is today without your feedback. Without the kick you guys gave our morale, we might have never finished a project like this at all.

When the game launches on February 13, we hope you will let us know your thoughts on it.

  25. Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds is an expansion for Horizon Zero Dawn that adds an additional chapter to Aloy’s journey. Taking place in the icy wastelands to the north, it includes a brand new environment to explore, a new mystery to uncover, and dangerous new machines to hunt. Among the latter is the wolflike ‘Scorcher’, a fast and tenacious machine with a damage output close to that of the Thunderjaw.

We asked four members of the Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds development team – Principal Designer Dennis Zopfi, Lead Animator Richard Oud, Lead FX Artist Marijn Giesbertz and Audio Lead Bastian Seelbach –to provide details on the creation of the Scorcher, as well as tips and tactics for dealing with the machine and its ferocious attacks. Watch the video above for their insights.

It can take months to develop a single machine from concept to final in-game creature. The process usually begins with a concept art and ideation phase, where the developers figure out the most important questions: What does this machine look like? Why does it look the way it does, what is its personality and purpose? How does it move, and how does it behave when angry or alerted?

Some Guerrilla artists have engineering backgrounds, which means they don’t stop at just the look or feel of the machines. They work out how their designs could interact with the laws of physics, and how locomotion is determined or constrained by limbs and appendages. Their efforts, combined with many other disciplines like animation, AI, and Visual FX, ultimately make it possible for a machine like the Scorcher to leap off the concept board and into the Cut, to challenge Aloy on her adventures.

    Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds launches on November 7, but you can pre-order a copy from the PlayStation Store today to receive an exclusive PlayStation 4 avatar. To stay up to date on the latest developments surrounding Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds, keep an eye on the PlayStation Blog and remember to follow Guerrilla on Twitter and Facebook.

Make sure to come back tomorrow morning, when we’ll reveal the creation process behind Horizon Zero Dawn’s most enigmatic tribe. At the same time on Friday, new characters, environments and enemies will be shown off in the first The Frozen Wilds play through video!
