PlayStation - The Last of Us Part II Remastered - Announce Trailer | PS5 Games -
The team here at Naughty Dog is excited to announce The Last of Us Part II Remastered, the definitive way to experience the acclaimed The Last of Us sequel originally released in 2020. We’re thrilled to confirm you won’t have to wait long for it either; players can jump into Ellie and Abby’s emotional journeys on the PlayStation 5 console on January 19, 2024.
Whether you’ve already played and even platinumed The Last of Us Part II on the PlayStation 4 console or have recently jumped into The Last of Us Part I on PS5 and want to continue the story, Part II Remastered will offer plenty of reasons for new and returning players to revisit a story that means so much to our studio. The engrossing campaign returns alongside technological improvements, new modes, and new behind-the-scenes features that will deepen your understanding of Part II’s creation. But before we break down what’s in store, take a look at our announcement trailer below.
Play VideoThe Last of Us Part II Remastered is designed to let you dig deeper into both its development and mechanics. Chief among these is a brand-new mode called No Return, a roguelike survival mode designed to let players prove their mettle in randomized encounters and experience The Last of Us Part II’s combat in a fresh experience.
The mode includes a host of playable characters to choose from – some playable for the first time in The Last of Us franchise (which you may have spotted in our trailer) – who each come with their own traits to suit different playstyles. Players will chart their own course on each run, choosing between various stealth and combat encounters that will pit you against a range of enemies, with unique twists that can add new, unexpected factors to any given encounter.
Each run will offer a new chance to decide what rewards you get after each encounter, how you spec out your character, and more. Unlock more characters, skins, and more as you progress to use in the mode, customize your own runs, and compete on a global leaderboard as part of a Daily Run2. We’re excited to share more about No Return as we get closer to launch.
For those who have already played The Last of Us Part II, we know the included sections featuring a playable guitar were a favorite for many, and you burgeoning rockstars impressed us with your performances. So we’ve introduced a new Guitar Free Play mode, which will let you strum the strings across a host of unlockable instruments, use audio FX pedals to modulate your performance, and play as different characters in several in-game locations to customize the mood and feel of your set.
And for both new and returning players interested in learning more, we’ve designed Part II Remastered to offer a comprehensive dive behind-the-scenes of how our studio brought this game to life. A new set of Lost Levels in Part II Remastered allow players a unique chance to check out some playable sequences previously cut from the game. These aren’t fully finished levels, but rather early-development slices that not only let you see some new glimpses of Part II’s world, but also include embedded developer commentary to give them richer context. Explore these spaces and hear directly from the team about the intention of aspects of each level – this is a unique inclusion for our studio and we’re excited to allow players a glimpse into the creative process.
We’ve also included newly recorded director’s commentary across the campaign’s cutscenes from director Neil Druckmann, narrative lead Halley Gross, and actors Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson, and Laura Bailey. They assembled to offer insight into the story and its characters that mean so much to both our team and our fans, and we’re delighted to give fans even more understanding of the team’s approach to this story.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered will feature enhanced graphics, including native 4K output1 in Fidelity Mode, 1440p upscaled to 4K1 in Performance Mode, an Unlocked Framerate option for TVs that support VRR, increased texture resolution, increased Level-of-Detail distances, improved shadow quality, animation sampling rate, and more. It all brings the world of Part II’s story to life in richer and smoother detail, from the snow-swept mountains of Jackson, Wyoming to the rainy cityscape of Seattle, Washington, and should make a first visit or a return trip to the complex journeys of Ellie and Abby all the more engrossing.
Part II Remastered takes advantage of the PS5’s power and features in more ways as well, including improved loading times. Part II Remastered also incorporates DualSense wireless controller haptic feedback and adaptive triggers integration to better immerse you in every moment of combat and exploration.
We’ve ensured Part II’s award-winning suite of accessibility options returns for the PS5 experience, alongside new additions like the inclusion of Descriptive Audio and Speech to Vibrations, which uses the DualSense controller to indicate character speech and cadence. The unlockable Speedrun Mode, included in The Last of Us Part I, will also be coming to Part II Remastered, allowing players to post their best times. Following The Last of Us Part I, The Last of Us Part II Remastered includes the ability to unlock bonus skins for Ellie, Abby, and their weapons that we’re excited for players to see and take some incredible Photo Mode shots with. You can get a first look at some in our announcement trailer. And speaking of Photo Mode, we’ve made some additions that players of The Last of Us Part I may be familiar with, including dynamic lighting, Frame Forward, and Gaze Direction, as well as new frame and logo options.
We’re so excited to natively bring The Last of Us Part II to the PlayStation 5 as the definitive way to experience the sequel and everything it has to offer, while also offering fans new and returning deeper levels of appreciation for the work that went into it. Pre-orders will be available beginning December 5, both for the standard edition, as well as The Last of Us Part II Remastered W.L.F. Edition, which will be exclusively available direct from PlayStation in select markets (United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Benelux, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Austria). It includes a SteelBook® display case, four enamel pins, a Washington Liberation Front Patch, and a total of 47 Society of Champions trading cards, including eight holographic cards. These were a favorite of Part II players to collect in-game, and we’re so happy we could bring these to life. Check it out below:

A mystery has been brewing since viewers visited the monster-filled lands of Legendary’s 2017 film, Kong: Skull Island. The movie revealed a shady organization called Monarch with special interests in the growing presence of titanic monsters like King Kong and Godzilla. We’ve seen these behemoths crush and clash on the big screen, along with a breadcrumb trail of clues around Monarch’s machinations. That trail continues today as Monarch: Legacy of Monsters premieres on Apple TV+, continuing the Monsterverse story from exciting new perspectives of its nuanced human protagonists.
To mark the hulking step for the Monsterverse, I had the pleasure of chatting with Director and Executive Producer Matt Shakman (WandaVision, Succession, Game of Thrones). We discuss the creator’s history with Godzilla, the process of bringing this cinematic universe to a TV series, and much more.
PlayStation Blog: Thanks for joining us, Matt. How did you come to be involved with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters?
Matt Shakman: It’s great to be here. Thank you. I’m a huge Godzilla fan. I have been since I was a kid. I used to watch them with my dad – they’re very fond memories from my childhood. So when [Legendary] approached me about directing the first two episodes of this show, I was immediately intrigued just because Godzilla was part of the package. But then when I got to read the scripts and see the really beautiful, multigenerational dramatic story that they had created, I was immediately pulled in. And then on top of that, there was Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell playing the same character [Lee Shaw]. Hugely exciting. I was really ready to go. In terms of my journey before that, I’m a filmmaker, director and producer, I work in theater, film, and television. And that’s my story before up to this point.
You mentioned that the new series spans multiple generations. How are you approaching that in the show?
So Monarch is this organization that has existed in the Legendary MonsterVerse movies. It’s an organization that studies monsters. It’s a somewhat secretive group. Our story is about that organization, how it came to be, and then how it is in the present day. We follow characters in multiple time periods who have connections to each other in ways that are revealed during the course of the show. I don’t want to say too much about the history of those family connections. But it really is about many generations of trauma, about dealing with what monsters mean on this earth, and what is life like now that they’re a part of our everyday experience. That’s what’s happening in our present-day timeline, after the events of the 2014 Godzilla movie where the monsters revealed themselves to us for the first time. It’s about a society that has to deal with a new reality and how they’re going to live side by side with these creatures.
How far does the timeline of the show stretch in the Monsterverse?
I don’t want to say too much because I’d like people to discover it. “When” is a big part of the storytelling, but we are having events happen even before Skull Island events happen, after Skull Island, and events that have happened closer to our present. Obviously, it’s not happening exactly in our present day yet. But a few years ago.
You mentioned working with Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt Russell. As director, how do you approach two different people playing the same character at different points in their life?
I love Kurt Russell. I’m a huge fan, have been since I was young, and I’m a big fan of Wyatt, Russell, too. They’re both great actors. Interestingly, very different actors. They approach acting in different ways. Both are brilliant at what they do. So it was fun to come together and create one character with these two actors. And I think they loved it as well. You know, as a father-son, creative project, you can’t really come up with a better one, where they would meet in the middle and say, “Okay, well, who is this guy? What’s the sound like? How does he walk…”
When we started shooting Wyatt’s stuff, Kurt would hang around at the monitor, study, and think about it. He was watching and saying, “I can do that, I can bring a little bit of this.” I also think Wyatt was enjoying watching his dad’s movies and thinking, “Okay, how do I bring a little of that classic Kurt Russell stuff?” They kind of met in the middle and I just made sure that everything about that character was a group conversation. Wardrobe was both of them at the same time, hair and makeup, everything was about building this character together.
What’s your approach to keeping people coming back with each new episode?
It’s a human point of view the whole time. And that’s what makes it special. We’re following these characters which take us to monsters occasionally. We are watching monsters from the ground level, which I think is what differentiates it from the other Monsterverse movies, where a lot of things are happening at Godzilla’s eye height, and justifiably so. It’s thrilling to watch King Kong and Godzilla battle [from that perspective]. For us, we’re trying to make characters that you root for and care for, and want to join week in and week out and see how they’re going to do this week versus last week. That’s television, right? That’s why television is different from movies.
Speaking of the human character occasionally leading viewers to monsters, how do you pace out those key monster appearances?
It’s a great question. And it’s true, you obviously want to make sure that you’re spending just the right amount of time. Because ultimately, it is a story about humans. It’s about Cate, Kentaro, Lee Shaw, and all of these other wonderful characters and how their lives are shaped by these monsters. Less is more when you bring in the big guy [Godzilla]. But he also has to play a key role in the overall narrative. I can’t take credit for it. Chris Black and Matt Fraction are the creators of the show. They determined how they needed Godzilla to function in the narrative and where he would come in and play an important role in turning the story. And ultimately where his story ends up and how his story intersects with the story of Cate, Kentaro, Lee, Keiko, and all these other characters is the joy of watching the first season.
Can you talk a little bit about your first memory of seeing Godzilla on screen and how has that stuck with you?
My memory is sitting on a very old ‘70s-style sofa in Ventura, California with my dad watching the original Godzilla as a rerun, on some Sunday afternoon. I had this Godzilla toy from the late 70s that Toho made. The tail came off and would shoot off at a little spring… That was my favorite toy growing up. And I played with it until it was in tiny little plastic pieces. I recently pulled it out of the garage, at my dad’s house and tracked it down. And it’s actually not that bad. It’s missing the hand and I had to glue the leg back on. But it’s probably back on my shelf in my office. Now that this show is coming out it’s great to bring it back out. I just love Godzilla, and my dad did, too. This show is making me feel connected to my dad, similar to the way I’m sure Wyatt and Kurt [Russell] enjoyed working together.
Anything else that you want to add?
I’m excited for people to check out the show. We’re really passionate about it. It’s been a tremendous amount of fun making it over the last year plus, and we hope people enjoy it when they watch.
Watch Monarch: Legacy of Monsters now on Apple TV+ with a limited-time 3-month extended trial on PS4 and PS5.

For just short of a year, Guerrilla has been working with the team over at Steamforged Games to bring you a fully cooperative, narrative-driven tabletop experience set in the world of Horizon.
Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion is launching on Kickstarter on November 21, and today, we wanted to give you a sneak peek at what this adventure will hold for players. Taking our learnings and feedback from Horizon Zero Dawn: The Board Game, Guerrilla and Steamforged Games have worked closely together to elevate what a Horizon board game experience can be.
Guerrilla’s Senior Copy & Game Writer, Emil Cholich, sets the scene: “Seeds of Rebellion is set about six months before Regalla’s attack on the Embassy in Horizon Forbidden West. The story puts you and your friends in the boots of newly minted Marshals tasked by Hekarro to investigate troubling reports of unrest among the Tenakth. This quest will take players across Red Blight-ridden Clan Lands, pit them against colossal machines, and allow them to uncover Regalla’s Rebellion in its earlier days, a period players have yet to explore.”
“By the time Aloy arrives in the Forbidden West, Regalla’s rebels have established many strongholds across the Clan Lands. Seeds of Rebellions offers not only an insight into the formative days of this rebellion, but also the vengeful, hotheaded, or sometimes misguided young Tenakth that feel drawn to it.”
This board game was created to be a deeper, more enriching experience for Horizon fans than its Zero Dawn predecessor. Players will have to work together to discover the truth and save many Tenakth lives in the process. “Seeds of Rebellion is a fully cooperative campaign game divided into 13 chapters. Each of which is split into two main gameplay sections – narrative and combat,” says Steamforged’s Product Owner Fraser McFetridge.
“During the narrative sections, players will experience the game’s story via choose-your-own-adventure text entries. As they do, they will make decisions regarding which NPCs to speak to, how they’ll trade their hard-won resources, and face all manner of challenges beyond the already thrilling combat. What’s most exciting is that the players’ decisions influence upcoming combat encounters, where they will place their unique miniatures onto encounter maps to take on enemy miniatures in a more zoomed-in setting.”
Let’s dive deeper into machine combat, something Horizon fans will know a lot about, in Seeds of Rebellion. “We’ve designed the narrative of Seeds of Rebellion in such a way that players could come across machines in a number of ways, depending on how they decide to explore,” shares Fraser. “Things like sneaking through cover to ambush a Clawstrider; finding a way to trap a Tremortusk, so you can escape its devastating weaponry; or avoiding a charging Bristleback while it tramples anything in its path. Then, of course, there is the classic fight-to-the-death against a coiled Slitherfang.”
Taking the intricate machines from the world of Horizon and creating them in miniature form is no easy feat. Steamforged tackled this head-on. “Of course, we can’t ignore the Tremortusk in the room: the miniatures, which are highly detailed, mini representations of the machines fans know and love. Our sculpting team have forever imprinted the phrase ‘most complex miniatures we’ve ever created’ into my brain,” says Fraser. “I’d go so far as to describe Forbidden West’s machines as ‘perfect’ for tabletop translation, given the careful precision they’re designed with, combining form and function. I’m told some of the sculpting references we received from Guerrilla were over a billion polys. I’m not a sculptor myself, but I’m assured that means they’re extremely detailed!”
It’s not just the machines that are important to translate well into board game form. “We’ve been working closely with Guerrilla to integrate memorable in-game locations and characters into the encounter maps and narrative,” shared Fraser. “We’ve also taken great care in our game design to authentically recreate the experience of playing and exploring the Forbidden West. From stealthing your way through tall grass to precisely targeting a machine’s components, weakening its attacks, and collecting its valuable scrap.”
Enhancing the woven story has always been at the forefront of all Horizon experiences. “This is inherently a story of unity and teamwork,” says Emil. “The player characters must work together to overcome increasingly slim odds against deadly machine and human threats. The co-op gameplay style and narrative engine developed by Steamforged gave us the room to bring the compelling characters Horizon’s world is known for to the tabletop.”
For those who also supported the Horizon Zero Dawn board game, Steamforged has good news. “Compatibility with the Horizon Zero Dawn board game is particularly important to us. That said, we are keeping details on this close to our chest (I am sure you’ll understand our desire to avoid too many spoilers),” says Fraser. “What we can confirm right now is there’ll be a backward compatibility pack, available at no extra cost for returning backers who pledged for Horizon Zero Dawn: The Board Game, which will let you take your Zero Dawn miniatures straight into the already-challenging lands of the Forbidden West.”
Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion will be available to back on Kickstarter from November 21, and you can already sign up to be notified on launch here.
Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion will be available in English language only.
