For the past few years, one of the most asked questions we get at Team Ninja has been: “What’s going on with Dead or Alive?” I’m excited to finally give fans some answers as the franchise is very much alive and kicking! This year marks the 30-year anniversary of the 3D fighter, so it’s only fitting that we celebrate with a few announcements. Dead or Alive 6 Last Round features 29 playable characters (24 from the original release, and 5 additional DLC fighters from DOA6!), with characters like Kasumi, Marie Rose and others receiving a total of 5 costumes. The game has also been optimized and updated to run on the latest hardware, and a new photo mode has also been included for fans to capture every angle of their favorite fighters in action. The free to play version is scheduled to release simultaneously and fans will be able to jump immediately into battle as it includes four popular characters: Kasumi, NiCO, Marie Rose, and Honoka. In addition to being able to play against others anywhere in the world, including those with the full version of the game, also playable in this version are the online modes DOA Quest and DOA Central, and the new photo mode! This enables everyone to try out the game for free, so whether you’re a longtime fan of the series or a newcomer to fighting games, we invite everyone to give Dead or Alive 6 Last Round a try. In addition, further updates, new costumes, and new characters are scheduled to be released post launch. More details to be announced at a later date. But that’s not all. I know I said I had a few announcements, and I saved the best for last. I can finally reveal that Team Ninja has been hard at work on the development of the latest Dead or Alive title! More news on that to come, but until then, time to get back in the fighting spirit and get your skills up in time for the latest tournament. Dead or Alive 6 might be getting ready to face its Last Round, but the franchise is storming back better than ever in the near future! View the full article

I’m Sergey Mohov, Lead Gameplay Designer on Control Resonant, and I’m excited to walk you through what you’ve just seen in our latest gameplay video which debuted in the latest State of Play. If you missed it, you can check it out below. The footage offers a glimpse of Dylan in action as he hunts a Resonant in the shifting landscape of the West Incursion Zone, one of the areas you can explore early in the game. It’s a place that feels familiar at first glance but has been reshaped by otherworldly forces actively breaking reality apart. Control Resonant isn’t an open-world game, but it is built around large, distinct, and expansive zones filled with side activities, hidden encounters, and optional discoveries. A strong, central narrative guides you through the world, while still leaving room to explore and uncover what’s been left behind in the chaos. The West Incursion Zone is a good example of this approach, gradually becoming more distorted as architecture folds in on itself, and gravity behaves unpredictably. In the video, you’ll hear a voice speaking to Dylan. That’s Zoe De Vera, an FBC Field Agent, and one of the new characters we are introducing in the sequel playing a key role in Control Resonant. Zoe acts as Dylan’s handler in the field, offering guidance and context as events spiral out of control. Her relationship with Dylan is an important part of the story, pushing him to confront who he is, what he’s capable of, and what it means to hold onto his humanity in the middle of a supernatural crisis. Dylan’s supernatural abilities As Manhattan grows more twisted, traversal across the different zones becomes as much a gameplay challenge as it is a spectacle. Dylan’s supernatural abilities, such as Reach, allow him to navigate spaces that no longer obey regular rules of physics. You’ll also encounter areas where gravity and orientation shift entirely, called Gravity Anomalies. By activating his Shift ability, Dylan can adapt on the fly, redirecting momentum and movement to traverse these spaces. A road might be flipped upside-down above Dylan, or the roof of a building might be tilted sideways, acting as a vertical bridge. If you can reach these surfaces, you can walk on them normally. The challenge lies in re-learning what “ground” is and spotting pathways on surfaces that are now at war with gravity. Dylan wields the Aberrant, an otherworldly, shapeshifting melee weapon that is a central element of the player’s combat arsenal. As shown in the video, it can transform into multiple forms, like Hammer, Blades, Scythe, and Fists, giving players a versatile toolkit to define their approach to combat. There are other forms too, but we are not revealing them yet. Progression is all about building your perfect combat flow. You’ll constantly expand your toolkit by unlocking new Aberrant forms, supernatural abilities, and combos. There are also deeper customization systems, which let you specialize and power up your favorite moves. Before heading into combat, you can equip your chosen abilities and weapon forms to create a loadout that defines your unique approach to fighting, whether on the ground or in the air. Introducing the Resonants The video also introduces one of the game’s powerful boss enemies, known as Resonants. Resonants are remnants of people who once held great power, now corrupted and twisted by the same mysterious force threatening reality itself. While encountering Resonants is dangerous, defeating them is the primary way Dylan expands his supernatural arsenal, as each one he vanquishes rewards him with a brand-new combat ability. This is why our game is called Control Resonant! We hope you enjoyed this first extended look at Control Resonant gameplay. The West Incursion Zone is only one part of a much larger, stranger journey, and we’re excited to share more with you in the coming months. On behalf of our entire development team, thank you for your excitement for our game! Things are going to get weirder. Control Resonant will be released on PlayStation 5 in 2026. You can wishlist it now. View the full article

In today’s State of Play, we revealed the first trailer for Brigandine Abyss, our upcoming single player fantasy strategy RPG, which launches on PS5 in 2026. The Brigandine series has had a long history with PlayStation, with the first title launching on the original PlayStation back in 1998. Now, six years after the release of Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia, the series once again brings players to a fantasy world where battles take place on a hex grid. Before we continue, let’s take a look the teaser trailer! Defend your territory from invasions in this fantasy strategy RPG This installment of Brigandine tells the story of a powerful empire scheming to conquer the continent and six different protagonists who find themselves facing this great evil. The player can choose to play as the leader of one of six factions as they navigate events that will shape the history of the continent of Meltitea. Strategically command troops of monsters to overcome trial after trial—and bear witness to every twist and turn along the way! This latest entry carries forward series staples, like fighting battles on hex-based maps using troops of knights and monsters, various RPG elements, and over 100 units with their own skills, elements, and traits. However, it will also feature some brand-new systems (details to come)! Plus, 3D graphics bring the game’s wide array of battlefields to life, providing a sense of immersion to its deep strategy gameplay. In addition to the six stories following the six main characters, there are also optional side quests which follow each of the continent’s 24 factions. This makes for a staggering combined total of 200+ hours of playtime—enough to satisfy even the most die-hard players! Finally, we have a message from the producer: “Hello, everyone. Let me introduce myself. My name is Masaru Saito and I’m the producer of Brigandine Abyss. Brigandine is a series of strategy RPGs that each feature their own settings and characters, making Brigandine Abyss an easy title to pick up even for newcomers to the series. There’s actually an interesting story as to why I was brought on for the development of Brigandine Abyss, but I’ll save that for another time. In any case, I hope that by reading this you’ll know that, in part thanks to that special connection, I’ve poured my heart into developing this game.” Brigandine Abyss is brought to you by a new development team, and we hope you look forward to it! More details on the game and its exact release date will be announced at a later date, so please stay tuned! View the full article

PSBlog Feed: Inside the gameplay systems of 4:Loop
Commander Fury posted a topic in Playstation Blog
Hi, I’m Mike Booth, Chief Creative Officer at Bad Robot Games, and Game Director of 4:Loop. A core goal when I’m designing games is to make new kinds of experiences that always offer interesting surprises and unpredictable moments for players, and for our own dev team! To achieve this means building emergent gameplay. The result is 4:Loop, an unpredictable, challenging, combat sandbox where you succeed through cooperation and improvisation. Play Video What is 4:Loop? 4:Loop is a rogue-like co-op shooter where you and three friends try to save the world from a devastating alien invasion that turns 99.99% of humanity into glass. A massive Mothership suddenly appears above Earth, striking the planet with a powerful energy beam leaving humanity frozen in time. You’re one of the “lucky ones” who escaped being glassed and now must find a way to stop the invasion to save the world (no pressure). Of course, since we’re Bad Robot, there are a lot of mysteries to unravel, including why you were spared. The gameplay loop Decide At the heart of 4:Loop is the Probability Map which combines alien technology and human ingenuity to predict the immediate future and plot your best path forward to defeat the invaders. Each node of the Probability Map represents a distinct mission type with its own risks, rewards, and surprises. Players vote on which node to start from, keeping in mind that each node chains together into specific routes. You need to look ahead and decide on the strategy your team thinks is best. As you progress and the game throws increasingly bigger curveballs, the stakes are raised. Seasoned players will discover creative ways to use the Probability Map to their advantage, setting their team up for ever more epic runs. Fight Of course, no plan survives contact with the enemy. Once you’ve chosen a node on the Probability Map, your team teleports into the mission. You may have to hack into alien technology, collect mission critical resources or even rescue survivors that can offer powerful upgrades for your team while trying to avoid the alien forces constantly sending drop pods of Killbot squads to stop you. As long as one person from your team manages to survive and reach the Escape Zone, the run continues. Anyone who died during the mission is “reprinted from backup” in your Homebase. But reprinting from dying means gaining a broken bone that can only be healed by the medic at a Rest Stop. If everyone fails to survive a mission, the entire run ends. Each section of the Probability Map culminates in a Boss Battle. There are currently three very different Bosses in 4:Loop. You’ll want to check which Boss you’re up against and choose your loot choices carefully. Each Boss is designed to push on team co-operation in a different way to really test your team’s mettle. Choose a reward When you survive a mission and beat a Boss, you return to the Homebase, where the Probability Map operates. This is a place for your team to readjust strategy, evolve your loadout, and select rewards from an increasing array of powerful gear and upgrades. During your run, you might also encounter The Shop, another key place to acquire valuable items and gear. Each visit gives you a new chance to spend the Cache you’ve been collecting in the world, find that missing piece of equipment you need, or inspire a change in your play style for the run. Equip & strategize There are many different weapons, items, and abilities in 4:Loop that players can combine in creative ways for improved combat, intel, movement abilities, stealth, hacking, and healing. It’s all about the choices you make during each run. Should I pick a jetpack or an SMG? There are so many items to choose from, and the combinations are infinite. Built for replayability Once you make your gear and Probability Map choices, it’s time to head back out to take on the invasion! 4:Loop is a world that’s been carefully crafted and filled with surprises, bursting with exciting ways to play. Our talented level designers and artists create the environments, but starting location, mission objectives, enemies, and how loot appears, are always unique. Plus, the time of day and weather are also randomly generated, which really changes how the missions unfold. The various enemies, creatures, plants, weapons, items, and mission objectives are also designed to interact with each other in dynamic ways that create emergent gameplay and endlessly replay-able chaos. That means your decisions really matter, and creativity and improvisation are key. No two runs are ever the same. As a developer, I’ve always been driven to make the kinds of games I like to play, going back to the original Left 4 Dead. I’m a bit old school and I like things straightforward. Our plan with 4:Loop stays true to that: Once you buy the game, we’ll update it based on what players like. Our goal is for you to have a great time, invite your friends, and we build a thriving community together. If you want to give 4:Loop a try for yourself, we are currently recruiting for the Beta*. Click this link to sign up! Just don’t expect to save the world on your first loop. Now go and fail to save the world! I’ll see you all in the game! *The Closed Beta will be available on PS5 & PC coming soon this spring. Signing up for the Closed Beta will put players in the FirstLook queue to participate. The Closed Beta will be available to players in North America with additional regions being rolled out throughout the Beta Phase. Stay tuned for more details – We can’t wait to share more very soon. As we just announced in State of Play, Ghost of Yōtei Legends is coming on March 10*! Play Video Legends is our online co-op multiplayer mode where you’ll team up with friends to challenge monstrous, supernatural versions of the Yōtei Six. It will arrive in patch 1.5 – free for all Ghost of Yōtei owners!** Legends will launch with three mission types. In Survival, you can team up with up to three other players to take down waves of increasingly difficult enemies on one of four maps. You’ll fight to control territory on each map. While you control a location, you can activate a Blessing, offering you an advantage in battle. But if you lose control, you’ll unleash a Curse, putting your team at a disadvantage. Each map will have its own unique Curses and Blessings. In Story, you’ll team up with another player to tackle a series of 12 missions. After completing each set of three Story missions, you’ll unlock an Incursion, which is a large-scale four-player assault on a stronghold belonging to a member of the Yōtei Six. Each Incursion will culminate in a boss fight versus a giant, supernatural version of the Spider, the Oni, the Kitsune, or the Snake. As for the other members of the Yōtei Six, in April we’ll release a Raid putting your team to the ultimate test, where you can expect to take on the Dragon and Lord Saito himself.*** In Ghost of Yōtei Legends, you can play as one of four classes: Samurai, Archer, Mercenary, or Shinobi. While any class can use a katana and ranged weapon, they also each excel in a different one of Ghost of Yōtei’s weapon and combat systems, and can each earn their own unique armor cosmetics as you complete feats through gameplay. The Samurai can wield the ōdachi and has access to the widest range of weapon types, the Archer can use the yari (spear) as well as carry an additional ranged weapon, the Mercenary has access to dual katana with a variety of utility-focused abilities, and the Shinobi can use the kusarigama, as well as a suite of stealth-focused skills. Beyond the loot you earn as you level up, you can also earn additional Legendary weapons and gear as you tackle higher difficulty challenges. Of course, Photo Mode will also return so you can set up action shots with your teammates while you’re making your way to the highest levels. And if you need to unwind between missions, our new Legends lobby will let you practice combat and archery, challenge your friends to a game of Zeni Hajiki, or see if you can set the high score in Bamboo Strike. The fan response to Legends was one of the most rewarding parts of launching Ghost of Tsushima, and we’re so excited to see the mode return for Ghost of Yōtei; we can’t for you all to dive in! We’ll share regular updates on our social channels, so be sure to follow us for more about Ghost of Yōtei Legends as we get closer to March 10! * Ghost of Yōtei Legends will launch on March 11 in some territories including Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. ** Internet connection and account for PlayStation required. PlayStation Plus subscription (sold separately) required for online play or multiplayer. PS Plus is subject to recurring subscription fee taken automatically until cancellation. Age restrictions apply. Terms apply: play.st/psplus-usageterms *** Available in future update (patch version TBA). View the full article

It’s good to be back! After releasing Kena: Bridge of Spirits, we took some time to figure out what we wanted to create next. We explored ideas that could capture the heart of what made Kena special while building on everything we’d learned along the way. When we began thinking about returning to her world, we were drawn to the idea of Kena as a more experienced Spirit Guide who could use her skills to help the living, not just those who had passed on. Play Video In Kena: Scars of Kosmora, Kena is older and renowned as a Spirit Guide. In hopes of finding answers to the affliction she has endured all her life, Kena travels to the mysterious island of Kosmora. Home to distinct cultures and regions, Kosmora is full of buried secrets from a tragic past. On Kosmora, Kena is confronted by a powerful spirit that fractures her staff. A spirit guide’s staff is their identity – their tool to help and commune with spirits. Kena’s staff was also keeping her alive. To survive, Kena must accept Kosmora’s forgotten form of Spirit Guiding which uses Alchemy to manipulate the power of the elements. Elemental spirit companions are a big part of this world. They are charming buddies that travel with you, grow over time, and unlock new powers as your bond deepens. Each spirit is tied to a different element and connected to other spirits that exist throughout the world. We revealed one Spirit so far, but we have only scratched the surface. There’s much more we are saving for later! Don’t worry though, there will still be plenty of corrupted souls to cleanse. We want players to feel Kena has grown in skill and capability. We’ve added new elemental gameplay to bring strategy and depth when facing the threats of Kosmora. These new combat skills, elemental infusions and use of your Spirit Companions will be key to overcoming challenging encounters and epic boss fights. While we’d love to talk to you more about the story you’re going to experience, we’re very conscious of anything remotely spoiler-esque. We’ve put a ton of effort into crafting the narrative for Scars of Kosmora, and the team is focused on creating an emotional and heartfelt adventure for returning players of Kena: Bridge of Spirits and those new to Kena’s world. We hope you enjoyed what you saw in the trailer. Partnering with PlayStation Studios has empowered us to craft an even larger world – one built with an emphasis on tightly designed regions, deliberate progression, and a strong sense of adventure. We’re super excited to share more in the future and can’t wait for you to get your hands on what we’ve been crafting. The reception for Bridge of Spirits was humbling, and we hope to deliver on what everyone loved about the first game and more. Kena: Scars of Kosmora launches on PlayStation 5 and PC this year, so stay tuned for more updates. See you in Kosmora! View the full article

Tarsier Studios is no stranger to invading our dreams. Its Little Nightmares series scared up some wonderfully disturbing gameplay that has lived long in memory, and now its spiritual sibling Reanimal is ready to pull us into another intense co-op platforming experience. I was given access to the full game ahead of its February 13 release to feel first-hand the many delightful horrors that await. A dark, dreamlike opening Reanimal doesn’t waste any time, with a disconcerting intro to its protagonists. I started as The Boy, floating alone in a boat adrift in a sea of darkness. A press of R2 drove me towards a single red light bobbing on the horizon. That light led to another. And then another. Until eventually I stopped to haul a masked figure out of the sea…who immediately tried to strangle The Boy, my DualSense controller shuddering in the attempt. It turns out this was The Boy’s sister, their reunion a sharp tone-setter for the brutal world ahead and an indication of how vital their collaboration is to survive. Varied environments keep you guessing While Reanimal starts off in bobbing waters, the setting changes and evolves in your search for the siblings’ friends Hood, Bucket, and Bandage. Your adventure across a fragmented island pushes you to an abandoned factory, an unsettling forest, a sinkhole-plagued city, and a waterlogged workshop, just for starters, before things vastly open up for more non-linear exploration. Each area demonstrates that Tarsier can make practically anything creepy, with derelict gas stations, a bank of rattling washing machines and even playground animals feeling like an unspoken threat. A focus on visual storytelling As with the Little Nightmares series, Reanimal relies on minimal dialogue to convey its story. The characters speak in places, but many of its narrative beats are told through body language and smart use of camera angles to convey claustrophobia, tension, and direction. Not to mention the level design, which always provides a clue to your next objective or where to go, albeit often subtly. Speaking of design… Sounds to make you quiver Great audio design is essential to any horror game, and Tarsier leans into its genre experience with a creeping aural dread that can lurch into a full-blown jump scare. Music is used sparingly, leaving the sound effects to deliver the shivers and the DualSense wireless controller’s haptic feedback to accentuate the shudders. A particular favourite of mine was the distant jingle of an ice cream van which foreshadowed…well, let’s just say I definitely screamed for ice cream. Teamwork is essential If you don’t have a human partner to survive with, Reanimal’s co-op artificial intelligence is more than capable of keeping you company. In my playthrough, The Girl followed quickly when needed, swiftly responding to a press of the Triangle button when we needed to give each other a boost to out-of-reach platforms. Alternatively, a tap of L1 gets her to interact with certain elements in the environment. For example, one puzzle required me to walk across a giant metal drum which was spinning too fast to traverse. The Girl was prompted to flip a switch to temporarily stop the drum from rotating, long enough for me to get across it and create a platform for her to follow. The co-op AI even occasionally performed acts that pushed me into action. During a particularly tense sequence involving the inside of a runaway van, a giant smashed through a window in an attempt to grab the masked siblings. Given the game’s general avoidance of direct combat, my first instinct was to hide, but my partner leapt up to strike the brute, making me realise I had a weapon to join in the attack. Chilling set pieces are never far away You’ll be doing a lot of sneaking, running, and hiding in the many haunting scenarios that make up Reanimal, with cinematic chases and rooms full of strange, slithering skin. One of my personal highlights was preceded by a crackling night-time movie theatre, with awkwardly posed bodies and shadowy flickers which made for a deeply unsettling experience. And while I died many times in some of the trickier areas, the quick respawn points were never far from where I made my mortal errors. It’s not just about primal survival Environmental puzzles play a big part of the game, ranging from simply finding wheels for a pump trolley, to more elaborate tasks. One had me in a forest of cut trees, where a solitary saw embedded in one trunk hinted at what my next action should be. Another had the siblings’ use a car for a battering ram, take a complex detour to rescue Hood, then have to find and fill a gas canister to refuel the car to escape an increasingly hostile situation. There are many secrets in the shadows Hidden away in the dark corners of the game are collectibles such as masks and concept art to find, some requiring steely nerves, keen eyes or just the twisted desire to dive into areas which go squelch in the night. Better bring a flashlight – you’ll see how dark things can get when Reanimal launches on PS5 February 13. View the full article

Last year was a big year for No Man’s Sky. Even we struggle to know how we pulled off so many large updates last year – Worlds Part II and Voyagers were both transformational and released in the same year, interspersed with smaller but significant updates in Relics, Beacon and Breach. As we head into our 10th year post release, our small team is excited for our first update of the year. Play Video Our new update is called Remnant and it introduces something that we’ve been wanting to give players since the very beginning – a gravity gun! The Gravitino Coil is a powerful new anti-gravity module for your multi-tool. It turns No Man’s Sky into a physics playground. Allowing you to grab large objects and fling, toss or carefully carry them around the world. Salvage and debris that could always be found on planets can now be collected and recycled for rare and highly prized resources. New trucks, tipping flatbeds and haulers can be constructed, to transport resources back to industrial yards for reclamation. You can work alone or join a salvage crew with friends. It creates this really fun and tactile new loop of searching for wrecks, loading trucks full of cargo and hauling across the alien landscape to industrial yards to gain new loot and rewards. Sorting and depositing materials in these all-new Waste Processing Plants will reap great rewards. Some of the scrap is highly volatile though and must be transported extremely carefully. It’s hard to resist over-stacking your truck, finding one more piece you think you can cram in, and then trying desperately to transport this house of cards on the back of your flatbed. Our gravity gun is an industrial tool, but it can also be used as a ballistic weapon, grabbing sentinels or fling heavy objects, turning them into projectiles. Vehicles can be hugely customised, to create bespoke trucks and haulers for your needs. Build your own brightly coloured incinerators, spider legged sci-fi explorer or heavily armed military vehicles with tank tracks. The Remnant Update comes with a limited-time community expedition. It brings travellers together in convoys to clean up and reclaim a planet covered in wrecks and salvage. Perhaps you’ll be a hauler, or the gravity gun wielding ground crew or maybe a scary yard operator. There are beautiful rewards, including dozens of new vehicle parts, and an all-new beautifully crafted armour set, with plush, padded fabrics and ornate steam punk detailing. 2026 represents 10 years since we launched on PlayStation and I couldn’t be prouder. For any game to reach such a milestone is a privilege. It wouldn’t be possible without your continued support and we genuinely appreciate it. Our journey continues. View the full article

In an unprecedented and unforeseeable event, the Cyborgs have returned to once again threaten the liberty and sovereignty of Super Earth and its inhabitants. This nightmarish turn of events follows the discovery that the Automatons seized the schematics for the Star of Peace with the intent to build one for themselves and use it for their dark and violent purpose. They have been tasked by the Cyborg Legion to carry out these crimes. Play Video The Helldivers have been ordered to take on the dark and grim streets of Cyberstan’s cities and stop this collusion of bots and Cyborgs in its tracks! The factory cities Now Super Earth is taking the fight to the heart of Cyberstan. Drop into the bot homeworld and prepare to breach the fortress walls of their massive factory cities. Fight through the inhospitable landscapes that power the Automaton war machine: industrial complexes that are heavily defended with hazards around every corner. The community of Helldivers must work together to clear a path through Cyberstan’s factory cities–choose which cities to destroy, making sure to bring down every building and leave no bot standing as you democratize these heartless machines. New mission & objectives Your primary mission will be to stop the production of more Cyborgs, as well as compromise Automaton defenses trying to stand in your way. Helldivers will also have the opportunity to clean up: destroy their mega factories building by building, and tear down the symbolic statues of the war criminals and terrorists revered by Cyborg scum in order to further destabilize and demoralize their regime. But beware–an old familiar threat rises in these dark, foreboding streets: the Cyborgs have returned with new weapons of mass destruction. Old enemies return You must face down three new types of enemies in the Cyborg subfaction. Outsmart the Agitators, who command the Automaton legion in the field, are heavily armored and can take control of enemy squads, making tactical decisions on the battlefield. Fight them while the Cyborg Radicals rush you from every side to make the fight up close and personal. They are the most extreme vision of a wretched Cyborg-run future: they push their bodies to the limit with cybernetic and bio-enhancements, turning themselves into a mockery of humanity. And finally, fight the Vox Engine: the Voice of the Cyborg Legion. This war machine, piloted by a high-ranking Cyborg officer, rolls across the battlefield, blaring Cyborg’s propaganda. It is armed with dual laser cannons, rockets, laser gatlings–all to ensure no one can stop the spread of their message. Helldivers call for aid And Super Earth shall answer! Along with the recently-deployed Siege Breakers Warbond which features defensive assistance like the G/SH-39 Shield, Helldivers will also be able to purchase the War Horses set of armor in the Superstore. Global reinforcement limits Sending reinforcements to Cyberstan is a great risk for Super Earth, which means it will be essential for the Helldivers to stay alive for as long as possible. Every death will be counted in the Battle for Cyberstan, using a Galactic Reinforcement Counter marking the finite number of Helldivers able to be deployed. If the counter reaches zero, it means we have lost the Battle for Cyberstan. Helldivers, we cannot lose to this renewed Cyborg threat. Your objectives must be completed while ensuring maximal lifespans for all divers. Stim your squadmates, bring defensive stratagems, and survive as you fight your way across Cyberstan, destroying the factory cities together! The latest Helldivers 2 update, Machinery of Oppression, is live now! *Requires base game, paid purchase of Super Credits, and game progression to unlock. Gameplay requires internet access and paid-for PlayStation Plus membership (sold separately) on PS5. View the full article

Hey PlayStation Blog readers, ever hear the story of the FBI Space-Time Police Special Agent Romeo, who takes down space-time criminals in search of his lost girlfriend? No? Well, you’ll be able to find out when Romeo is a Dead Man launches on February 11! We’ve uploaded one final trailer for you all today featuring some brand new music that’ll be in the game. Seeing is believing as they say, so take a good hard look. Play Video As you can see we’re getting some pretty serious artists to contribute to the game’s soundtrack, further reinforcing Romeo is a Dead Man as a dead-serious action-adventure game. How serious exactly? Well, we asked Grasshopper Manufacture CEO, director, and scenario writer Goichi Suda (pictured left) and co-director and scenario writer Ren Yamazaki (pictured right) to find out. The character clicked as soon as they realized Romeo was also DeadMan Daisuke Koyama: Is the game based on Shakespeare’s play? What made Romeo’s story take the form it has now? Goichi Suda: It’s not entirely based on Shakespeare, no. The protagonist was always named Romeo, and if we were going to include a character named Juliet at all we figured it’d be something of a cameo at first. While writing the script, though, we noticed she became more of an important character as it went along. Romeo and his grandfather Ben are pretty clearly based on the old man/young man dynamics you see in Back to the Future or Rick and Morty, and we originally figured it would be about their journeys through space-time. But when we threw Juliet in there, it was like a missed connection or something slowly taking shape into a full-blown relationship. In other words, we never really thought too hard about making this into a “tragedy” like the original play. So Suda-san originally came up with the character of Romeo and wrote the basic scenario for the game, and then Yamazaki-san turned it into a full script, right? What kind of character is Romeo to you? Ren Yamazaki: Compared to previous protagonists Suda has written, I think he’s quite a serious and straightforward character with no hidden agenda. Suda: I wanted to write the story of a good-natured young man maturing over time. Travis, the protagonist of the last scenario I wrote—No More Heroes 3—had a wild and violent journey, so I wanted a protagonist who’d be the exact opposite of that. He ended up being a masked protagonist, too. Suda: I always wanted Romeo Stargazer to be a character that left a strong impression not just through his in-game skills and weapons, but as a character too. Our past titles feature all sorts of characters who are loved by gamers, so I really thought hard about how to make Romeo a character who’d be just as praised. When Romeo got the DeadMan moniker along the way, he really started to come to life in a way that made me confident in him. I thought to myself, like, “Romeo really is DeadMan!” and then it all kind of fell into place. That’s why we made it the title, too. The action itself is quite the strong-style hack-and-slash, isn’t it? Yamazaki: Yeah, I was firm about that. So many different aspects and systems of the game changed throughout development, but in my discussions with our main programmer, Hironaka, we made sure the battle system delivered a strong sense of action from the beginning to the end of development. How’s the combat balanced? Suda: In a full course dinner, the ingredients used are usually pretty standard no matter where you go, right? Looking at this game’s development as a full course meal, when it comes to graphics, sound design, and also the actual gameplay, we ended up using all sorts of ingredients that you normally wouldn’t find in a regular kitchen. But no matter what ingredients we were handed we used them to our fullest ability, which I think is our strongest point as a studio. We kept making adjustments right to the very end to create a perfect rhythm to our own course meal. Is there anything about the action you paid particular attention to? Suda: The big finisher—Bloody Summer—I paid a lot of attention to how exactly it felt, and to that end the general movement of swords were refined meticulously so that it would feel as authentic as possible. I’m pretty sure I also made a lot of adjustments to the actual moment of impact, but that was years ago development-wise now and I’ve totally forgotten what exactly I requested (laughs). Action games are the kind of thing that get better and better with each and every minor tweak. We also paid special attention to how many enemies appear and where in each level. Each time I played through the game to make adjustments, I imagined myself to be playing it for the first time and really considered the emotions that come with that. Even on a first playthrough, I really wanted it to feel as smooth as it is challenging, and I think we got a good balance there. The end result is obviously dependent on the players, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how it’s received by the public. Romeo uses both swords and guns. Was it hard to balance the action between the two? Yamazaki: When you think of it at a pure game design level, close combat weapons and ranged weapons are kind of polar opposites in terms of action. I paid a lot of attention to creating situations where both would be valid options to use. Of course, shooting an enemy from outside their own range of attack is still the strongest method of attack, technically. That’s specifically why we introduced the Bloody Summer system, the crazy finisher move that only charges when you attack enemies with close combat weapons. Sure, it’s riskier because there’s far more of a chance of taking damage as well, but that’s the gamble. It’s safer to hit enemies from afar with your guns, but the gauge doesn’t fill. Basically it’s a battle of merits and demerits that has to be figured out moment-to-moment to ensure your victory. There’s also the Bastard system where you summon support characters. Where did this idea come from? Yamazaki: We were already experimenting with gimmick skills outside of the main character’s regular move set in Travis Strikes Again and No More Heroes 3. Bastards are kind of a natural evolution of what we were doing there. Suda was pretty adamant about adding in a crafting system in the game, and when we were brainstorming on two separate skill and crafting systems, we realized it might be more interesting if they were connected to each other. There’s a ton of variations to make, so be sure to switch them out whenever you can. Suda: The Bastards really have a nice sense of presence in the game itself. They alter the way you approach battles, and you really have to think about how you raise them, not to mention what the ideal loadout is at any given time. If you raise them right, they end up being stronger than your regular weapons. Also, on PlayStation, when you harvest Bastards from the soil they react to the adaptive triggers. That’s one way of using them. Do you have any Bastards you’re particularly fond of? Suda: The one I used right to the end was called Mictlantecuhtli. Definitely my strongest. Also, FrostBolt, which freezes enemies. Yamazaki: It was SuicideAttack for me, which blows itself up. The more you raise it, the stronger it gets. I think it’ll be fun for everyone to come up with their own combinations. Make sure to give a try! And if you do, keep playing all the way to the end–the second half in particular’s got quite the surprises in store. On getting players into the action as fast as possible It seems in classic Grasshopper style, the story itself and its presentation is trying to confuse players. The opening sequence is pure chaos. Suda: The opening in particular is full speed ahead, yeah. I think it’s quite the good composition, if I do say so myself. If we’re gonna cause some ruckus right off the bat, we might as well equally get the player in the thick of the action as fast as possible so they don’t have to think too long about it. I’m just glad if they can enjoy the action right from the start. Yamazaki: I’ve been at the company for quite some time now, so I’m really used to Suda’s storytelling style. I guess from that perspective, it’s nothing too unusual for me. It’s, like, yeah, business as usual. Of course, I understand it’s probably confusing to first-time players, but that confusion itself is fun to see. I’m especially excited for how people will react to the story as a whole. Suda: There’s plenty of things that go unused over the course of game development. I really hate just leaving things on the cutting room floor, so I try to use as much of it as possible. The opening to the game used to be much longer, but due to a variety of factors it turned into what it is now. Of the things that seemed like they might go unused, we tried to put all of them in full right from the get-go, so the opening is basically the best possible outcome of it. We wanted players to feel this kind of rush going into it that leads them straight into the action. Right, a longer opening makes people impatient. Is that how you convinced the staff, too? Suda: Actually, about half the staff working on Romeo is a Dead Man were joining Grasshopper for the first time, and I probably think they felt a huge kind of anxiety about it throughout the entire production. How do you mean? Suda: I think for the most part everyone made it not really understanding what kind of game it would eventually turn into. I think only around debugging time did most people really start to see the whole shape of the game as it was. Why do you think that happens? Suda: Our development style is kind of ad-libbed, I’d say. Basically we bring a bunch of ideas to the meetings and develop them just through talk and pick apart what seems like something worth implementing, and for the most part we just pick the most interesting ideas and ad-lib ways to put them in. But as the number of staff involved with development increases, that becomes more and more difficult. At a sheer numbers level, it’s hard to communicate those ideas to every member of every section of the company. Sounds very ad-libbed to me. Suda: But I think that feeling of a bunch of interesting ideas packed into one is what sets Grasshopper games apart. Especially when it comes to action games, they’re not really something where you decide on a super rigid spec sheet from the beginning and follow it all the way through—it changes throughout development. You basically have to keep polishing really small parts to make the overall product better. That kind of ad-libbing and improvisation is what connects the chaos of the game’s opening to the various forms of expression we see used in the rest of the game too, right? Yamazaki: Of course, Suda’s directing style and the new staff are one thing, but about half the staff is made up of long-time members who more or less understand the unique culture that makes the base of our development cycle. I’m not sure if that’s an advantage or a disadvantage, but that’s precisely where that bold flavor unique to our games comes through; I think that really works for the people who enjoy it, and is more of an acquired taste for a first-timer. It’s kind of like a ramen shop with a thick, strong broth. But you don’t plan on changing that, do you? Yamazaki: There are definitely times we consider making things a more general, salty flavor for the public at large; though, I’m not sure it works out that way even when we try (laughs). Usually I start out that way, but somewhere along the way I get bored with the blandness and end up putting a bunch of spice in without even realizing. Suda: There are already enough “orthodox” games out there to begin with, and I don’t think it’s our place to compete with them. The world is already overflowing with “perfect” games that look like something Dekisugi-kun (from Doraemon) would make. But if they were all Dekisugi-kun games, then there’d really be nothing interesting. We definitely need more Nobitas in the world, and I think our studio is one of them. Whether or not Doraemon is with us, who knows? (laughs) Embrace the chaos on February 11 How was the interview? Our quirky action game’s got a strong backbone to it. It definitely requires a bit of skill; each enemy’s got its own characteristics and combat changes with each weapon. Also, the stronger you make Romeo, his weapons, and support characters through mini-games, the battle encounters themselves evolve with it. This thing’s got some pretty satisfying punch to it, if I do say so myself. Do what you want, however you want it. If I was to measure what kind of excitement we want to deliver, imagine you order ramen and gyoza, and then you get what looks just like ramen. But then you finish the soup, and bam, at the bottom of the bowl: there was your gyoza the whole time! You’ll be like, “whoa, who knew video games could be this free?” Anyway, we hope you can feel the overflowing passion, joy, and pure human spirit that radiates from Romeo is a Dead Man. Give it a try! View the full article

Dear Trailblazers, the Honkai: Star Rail development team sends their long-awaited regards! We are thrilled to announce that a brand-new world known as Planarcadia will officially be unveiled in Version 4.0 No Aha at Full Moon. This prosperous world, renowned for its entertainment culture, is currently celebrating its unique Phantasmoon Games. This is not only Himeko’s homeland but also the starting point for the Astral Express to set sail once again. This story of The Elation will likewise span an entire year, and the stage will not be limited to Planarcadia—the IPC’s key stronghold, Astropolis, will also make its debut later. Let us witness the convergence of The Past and Future, and join new companions Yao Guang and Sparxie in the Euphoria party of The Elation. An arcadia where clout is king and people are amusing themselves to death Following the journey to Amphoreus, and at Himeko’s suggestion, the Express charted a course for Planarcadia, kingdom of the Elation, to resupply and explore. Planarcadia was once a 2D World in Canvas, but under the IPC’s management, it has been revived from the flatness of a painting to become a vital territory. It is now overseen by Pearl, one of the Ten Stonehearts of the Strategic Investment Department. Today, all manner of local entertainment products have sprung up like mushrooms, with their fame spreading across the entire cosmos. For the first stop on their journey, the Express Crew will arrive at Duomension City, situated in the heart of the arcadia. Unlike the solemn elegance of the Amphorean city-states, Duomension City is a vibrant metropolis defined by its sleek, modern aesthetic. By day, the streets are teeming with people, dazzling the eye with ubiquitous electronic screens and memetic projections. As nightfall descends, the waters of Dovebrook reflect the neon spectacle and bustling nightlife under the bright moonlight. Somewhere within the Dovebrook District lies the fabled World’s End, a tavern that serves as a vital social hub for the Masked Fools, though its exact location remains elusive. Furthermore, you will encounter all manner of bizarre creatures and objects active throughout the streets and alleys. Don’t be surprised, these are the local residents known as imagenae, beings born from painting and imagination. Whether it’s the towering, cool mechatron, the Meowton Station Master handling ground crew duties, or the thundercoil perched atop high towers amplifying the city’s network signals, they have long since integrated into the city’s daily life, becoming companions who live side-by-side with humanity. Speaking of Duomension City, one highlight you can’t miss is Interplanar Jump! There are mysterious entrances scattered all over the place—just dive in to reach the marvelous Duomension. Inside, the art style of people and imagenae changes, letting you pull off moves impossible in reality, like double-jumping or walking on water. Once you enter the Duomension, you’ll transform into different forms of Trailblazemon, free to explore all the unique and fun content hidden in every corner of the city. In Planarcadia, all conflicts and struggles are resolved through games, the most sensational of which is the Phantasmoon Games. Rumor has it that Aha personally established these games. The victor not only wins an audience with them, but also gains the authority of the Aeon of Elation for one minute. However, the games have no fixed rules—whoever catches Aha’s eye takes the lead. Thus, victory depends entirely on the participants’ capabilities and wit. A mask serves as the entry ticket for all participants, but only eight exist. The ferocity of the competition can be imagined. Not only are the locals of the arcadia, the Xianzhou Alliance, the Masked Fools, and the IPC getting involved, but even the Stellaron Hunters have arrived with their own agenda. Silver Wolf and Blade seem to have already made their move… Are they here for the Phantasmoon Games too? Who will obtain this incredibly precious invitation? Under the facade of Elation, is there some hidden conspiracy? It’s up to you to explore and find the answers. Get a Charming Partner in the form of Aha Instants In Planarcadia, even combat falls under the gaze of The Laughter. When characters of The Elation Path join the team, or when fighting special enemies, you will accumulate Punchlines. As Punchlines stack up and Aha’s excitement peaks, they will personally take the stage, triggering an Aha Instant. During this phase, Aha will lead the team’s Elation characters to unleash Elation Skills one by one. The more Punchlines you have, the stronger the skill effects. After the Aha Instant concludes, all Elation Path characters will receive their unique Certified Banger buffs, adding layers of strategy to your combat. In the new version, Trailblazers will welcome two powerful new 5-star characters to their roster. First up is the Seer Strategist of the Xianzhou Alliance’s Yuque ship: General Yao Guang. Previously a voice without a face in the storyline, she is finally making her official debut. As the senior soror to the familiar Master Diviner Fu Xuan, Yao Guang serves as a vital strategic advisor to the Alliance during dire straits. To the people of the Xianzhou, she is affectionately known as Madam Yao, a goddess of fortune capable of averting crises and divining weal through her calculations. As a Physical character following the Path of Elation, Yao Guang specializes in manipulating the tide of battle with Weal and Woe Lots. Drawing a Weal Lot boosts the team’s Elation and grants Punchline stacks when she uses her Skill. Conversely, during an Aha Instant, she casts a Woe Lot, increasing the DMG taken by enemies while recovering Skill Points for the team. Yao Guang’s Certified Banger buff allows teammates to deal additional Elation DMG with their attacks—and if those attacks consume Skill Points, the DMG is further increased. Furthermore, her Ultimate not only provides Punchline stacks to the team but also immediately triggers an extra Aha Instant, boosting All-Type RES PEN for all allies. Another mysterious 5-star character following the Path of Elation is Sparxie. Bearing a striking resemblance to the Masked Fool players know as Sparkle, she’s the hottest streamer in Planarcadia. In the storyline, Sparxie and Sparkle will appear together to bring the Trailblazer a unique surprise. During combat, Sparxie taps into her streamer persona, opening a livestream room to engage in a PK upvote battle against enemies. Players can continuously consume Skill Points to send random Gifts to Sparxie, regenerating varying amounts of Skill Points or Punchlines for the team. The more Skill Points consumed, the more Punchlines the team gains, resulting in higher final DMG. During an Aha Instant, Sparxie initiates a chaotic lucky draw, dealing massive DMG to all enemies with multiple bounce attacks. Under the Certified Banger state, every time a Gift appears during the PK, Additional Elation DMG is dealt to a random single enemy target during settlement. Additionally, Sparxie’s Ultimate also deals extra Elation DMG. It’s worth mentioning that the limited 5-star characters Black Swan, Evernight, and Hysilens will be featured in the Warp events during the first half of Version 4.0, while Sparkle, Cerydra, and Rappa will appear in the second half. Furthermore, the old partners Black Swan and Sparkle will be receiving buffs. They’ll continue to be your reliable allies in the upcoming journey to Planarcadia. New events galore Alongside the massive Main Story update, Version 4.0’s new events are just as hyped. When taking a break from exploring the arcadia, Trailblazers can invite friends to join the lighthearted Cosmicon Collective battle formidable foes through card duels and strive for the pinnacle of cosmic combat power! Another unmissable event is the operation of Furbobo Weekly. In this event, you’ll experience the busy yet fun life of a magazine editor-in-chief and get a taste of a whole new walk of life. Furthermore, Currency Wars is expanding for the first time, adding new characters and mechanics. The Divergent Universe has also been updated — look forward to the extra fun they’ll bring. Gaming experience optimization Finally, this update will optimize daily system functions for all Trailblazers: Assignments will no longer be restricted by fixed times or characters, allowing Trailblazers to claim rewards and dispatch characters at any time. Additionally, the Relic and Team Lineup systems will also be optimized and upgraded to provide a more convenient gaming experience. After the version update, simply log in and check in to receive 20 Warps, plus claim a free new Outfit for Ruan Mei and a 5-star character of your choice! At the same time, Yao Guang’s Weal Sign event will bring everyone a bonus of 1600 Stellar Jades may the Blessings of Good Fortune be with every Trailblazer on their journey in the new version! In addition, new Trailblaze Attire including a new Outfit and headwear for the Trailblazer will also be unveiled, which is sure to make your journey even more spectacular. Stay tuned for more game details. View the full article

Today marks a monumental step for Guerrilla as a studio, as we announce our new chapter in the Horizon universe: Horizon Hunters Gathering. Play Video With the very first ideas that shaped the world of Horizon, we dreamed of players hunting machines together. We started with a small group of Guerrillas – including myself back in the days as Design Director – and began exploring what that could look like. Drawing on our experience from the Killzone multiplayer titles and the momentum of Horizon Zero Dawn, we set out to bring cooperative action into the Horizon franchise. Since then, the team and the game have grown tremendously. Throughout its development we’ve done extensive testing, patching, and feedback iteration. One of my favorite moments was our first in-studio playtest with the entire team: a special milestone where the vision and hard work from every discipline finally came together in a playable form. It’s always nerve-wracking to share early builds, but moments like that test, as well as today’s announcement, make it worthwhile. View and download image Download the image close Close Download this image Horizon Hunters Gathering is a cooperative action game (developed by Guerrilla for PS5 and PC) that lets up to three players team up as heroic Hunters to protect a world under threat from deadly machines. Combat is tactical, reactive, and deeply skill-based, building on the tactical precision of the Horizon games while embracing the dynamics of team play. The foundation of Horizon Hunters Gathering centers around challenging and replayable hunts. Today we’re revealing two game modes: Machine Incursion, a high-intensity mission where waves of machines pour out from underground gateways, led by a formidable boss; and Cauldron Descent, a longer, multi-stage trial in which ever-changing rooms push Hunters to their limits, from brutal machine encounters to hidden doors that promise power and reward for teams prepared to open them. Both modes will be available in our upcoming closed playtest through the PlayStation Beta Program on PS5 and PC. We’re excited for players to get hands-on and help shape the game with their feedback. In Horizon Hunters Gathering, you choose from a roster of uniquely skilled Hunters – each with distinct melee or ranged playstyles and weapons – and select Hunter roles further embedded with a rogue-lite perk system to craft the build that best suits your style and your team. These Hunters have their own motivations and personal struggles, which comes together in new stories we want to tell in the world of Horizon. The game has a narrative campaign which will introduce new mysteries, characters, and threats, but we’re keeping it under wraps for now. What we can say is that Hunters Gathering is fully canon and its story doesn’t stop at launch! As you hunt dangerous machines in the wilds, you’ll travel through a range of environments that bring missions and stories to life. Each location offers its own atmosphere, challenges, and opportunities for your team to explore and master together. Between missions, you’ll return to Hunters Gathering: a vibrant social hub where players can connect, prepare, and celebrate victories together. Here, you can customize your Hunters, visit vendors, upgrade gear, and team up for your next adventure. With today’s announcement, we’re beginning a journey we hope to continue with you. Our first, small-scale closed playtest arrives at the end of February; you can sign up via the PlayStation Beta Program and mark your interest in any future Horizon Hunters Gathering playtest on PC or PS5. By the way, Horizon Hunters Gathering supports cross-play between PS5 and PC, plus cross-progression when you are logged in and save your game using the same PlayStation account! Though it’s still early on, you can expect more regular development updates and playtest announcements from us in the coming months. To stay in the loop on all the latest news about the game, we’ve launched a brand-new Horizon Hunters Gathering Discord – we’d love to see you there! On a personal note, this is both an exciting and daunting step for us. Multiplayer games have always been part of our studio’s DNA, and it’s where I began my own career. Bringing a co-op hunting experience into the Horizon universe is something we’ve envisioned for a long time, and we’re approaching it with care, ambition, and passion. I hope the coming months give you a sense of the scale and complexity of what we’ve been building – or better yet, let you experience it yourself in a playtest. On behalf of everyone at Guerrilla, thank you to our Horizon fans and creators who support and believe in us. And welcome to all new Hunters excited to join us on this adventure. Horizon Hunters Gathering is about taking on challenges together – and we’re just getting started. View the full article

Hey, everyone! We’re excited to finally share a gameplay overview for Toxic Commando and announce that the game launches on March 12. We’ve been working hard on this one, and we can’t wait for you to get your hands on it. Play Video For those just catching up, Toxic Commando is our take on the co-op shooter genre, blending intense horde combat with vehicle-based gameplay in open environments. We wanted to give you a deeper look at how this project came together and what makes it tick. From concept to chaos The whole thing started with a pitch from Saber Interactive’s CEO, Matt Karch: World War Z meets Mudrunner. Picture enormous hordes of enemies swarming players who need to use a variety of vehicles to survive. We thought it was a cool concept that played to our strengths at Saber, so we dove into research and prototyping. What emerged was something we’re really proud of—a unique blend of vehicle-based gameplay in open environments combined with action-packed fights against massive enemy hordes. Striking the balance: Wheels vs. boots One question we get a lot is how we balanced the driving and FPS aspects. The answer? We didn’t want to force you into one playstyle or the other. Our game design encourages exploration, and it’s up to you how much you want to lean on vehicles to tackle missions. There are obvious benefits to driving—mobility, protection, mounted weapons—but we never want you to feel locked behind the wheel. Our goal was simple: make vehicles fun and beneficial for players who want to use them, then let you decide how much time you spend driving versus on foot. Both approaches should feel viable and, most importantly, fun to play. Co-op that puts strategy in your hands Most missions in Toxic Commando are nonlinear. You’ll have multiple subobjectives that can be completed in any order, which means you and your squad can choose to stick together or split up to tackle objectives in parallel. The choice is yours. Each playthrough also shakes things up with different vehicle spawns and class/loadout selections, so you’ll need to communicate with your team and plan accordingly to create good synergy. We wanted to encourage real player coordination and strategic thinking, adding a fresh layer to the classic co-op shooter experience. Building a world that feels real (and ridiculous) When it came to crafting the lore and universe of Toxic Commando, we had a few guiding principles. First, we wanted a world that felt recognizable but was set in the near future—just advanced enough to have some cool tech without feeling like a massive leap from our own reality. Second, we wanted our characters to be aware of the tropes they’re living through. They’re in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, dealing with completely over-the-top situations that are both terrifying and—let’s be honest—a bit ridiculous. We lean into that with the dialogue and scenarios, which create some really memorable interactions. But here’s the thing: while we embrace comedic elements and want players to have a blast, we’re not interested in making fun of the games and movies that inspired us. We approach this with earnestness because we genuinely love this stuff. Our love letter to ’80s action horror Speaking of influences, we drew heavily from ’80s films and television. The path to John Carpenter was a natural one: which great director or movies fit into that kind of sphere? John Carpenter’s Escape from New York is probably the most obvious reference, but you’ll also find DNA from Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing, They Live, and Prince of Darkness woven throughout. John Carpenter’s involvement went beyond guidance, feedback, and direction on the story—he also composed Toxic Commando’s music. The team also looked at Dan O’Bannon’s Return of the Living Dead, Lamberto Bava’s Demons, Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator, and even a bit of The A-Team. What we love about those properties is the big energy and bombastic tone. It wasn’t about copying specific set pieces or scenes—it was about capturing that feeling. There’s a lack of self-consciousness in a lot of late ’70s to early ’90s action and action-horror cinema that we really appreciated. Those characters aren’t winking at the camera; they’re in over their heads and rolling with it. Our characters know what zombies are, but when faced with a horde, they’re not stopping to break the fourth wall or crack wise about clichés—they’re fighting for survival. The past fifty years of cinema have given us wonderful examples of ragtag groups of underdog heroes—from Star Wars to Goonies to Guardians of the Galaxy—alongside true masterpieces of horror. We wanted to blend those ideas: what happens when you drop a bickering found family of action-adventure heroes into a horror movie? That’s the core of what we’re exploring with Toxic Commando. John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando is scheduled to be released on March 12. We can’t wait for you to experience this new co-op zombie shooter with a vehicle twist. Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you out there! View the full article
