  4. Settling on one fighting game in this day and age is no easy feat. With so many great titles, deciding which will be your next big investment is hard. Mortal Kombat 1 provides a wide array of content reminiscent of old series ventures like Mortal Kombat Deception and Deadly Alliance. You can jump into the series staple modes like versus, training and tutorials, classic Towers, or Kampaign, where you’ll witness a dimension-shattering new story. But if you want something new, you’ll be happy to learn more about Invasion mode, which expands on the universe-defense plotlines of the story with a roleplaying game twist. Mortal Kombat 1 is all about protecting your timeline, and in Invasion, you’re tasked with doing just that. Using your favorite characters and Kameos, you’re tasked with warding off invaders ranging from an evil variant of Scorpion to a wacky Ninja Mime. All this occurs on board game-like world maps set in various locations, beginning in Johnny Cage’s proclaimed “haunted” mansion. Traversing maps like this, you’ll be confronted with various battles where you gain experience points, equipable items, in-game currency, and key objects to help you progress. Incentives that make Invasion mode a must-play include unlockable customizable cosmetics for your characters, behind-the-scenes content, and more Kameo fighters. Be sure to spend a little time exploring here. If you’re a Mortal Kombat fan, this may sound similar to something like Towers or the Krypt, and that’s because it’s like an evolution of those classic modes combined into one. As with Towers, your encounters with enemies are broken up by minigames like Test Your Might. In fact, some areas will surprise you with their own Towers to conquer, earning you tons of experience points and in-game currency. Invasion mode also delivers satisfying fanservice in the form of encounters against the Deadly Alliance of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, an invading Scorpion that looks like the classic version of the character, elemental amulets similar to Raiden’s, and even a lurking Kollector who you can buy items from. Inclusions such as this make Invasion feel like a comprehensive celebration of the series. Anyone can enjoy Invasion, but longtime fighting game fans, especially of the Mortal Kombat variety, will probably find a second home here. While the main incentive is scoring unlockables to personalize your favorite fighters, there’s much to enjoy here. Equipping the cast with customizable attack items and experimenting with their stats is a fun side project. Having to conquer a path of enemies with random elements like raining fireballs and booby-trapped stages adds an element of comedy and surprise to the experience. One example that had me chuckling was being caught off guard mid-fight by a random sawblade. Beginners will find Invasion mode to be a great teacher as well. Tutorial matches teach you to block correctly, punish specific moves, and other combat basics. There’s even a feature where enemies will do punishable moves slower, so you’ll learn to interrupt them and take advantage in battle consistently. If you plan on taking the fight to other timelines with Invasion mode, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind. Make sure you take every path possible. You will want to find keys to keep progressing through certain areas. You’ll also want to take down any Towers you come across. Towers are an easy way to take on multiple enemies to stack even more currency and experience points. And finally, use Invasion as a chance to try more than your main fighter and Kameo. If you just stick to one, you’ll miss out on learning a new character with these new features. There’s a lot to experiment with in this mode. Invasion is a mode that takes the greatest hits from Mortal Kombat’s single-player history, feeling like a museum of content for longtime fans of the series. And even for newcomers, it’s a great single-player mode to sink your time into and learn more about Mortal Kombat lore and competitive gameplay. Join the fight against invaders when Mortal Kombat 1 releases on September 19 for PlayStation 5. View the full article

  6. In Baldur’s Gate 3, we believe that the best roleplaying experiences are those that give you the freedom to embody whoever you want to be – whether that’s a Githyanki Fighter from the Astral Plane, a Tiefling Barbarian recently escaped from Hell, or even just a version of yourself. Giving players the tools to express themselves in the game has been an important goal for us throughout development. Over the last six years, we’ve added new visual options for you to personalise your character, giving you the freedom to unleash your imagination and create a hero you really resonate with. But character creation in Baldur’s Gate 3 is more than skin deep. Let’s take a closer look at how your choices made during character creation are reflected in the game and can impact the entire course of your journey throughout the Forgotten Realms. Next-gen roleplaying In Baldur’s Gate 3, your experience is shaped not just by what you do in the game but by who you choose to be. And it begins at the character creation screen. A Wayward Halfling Paladin whose Charlatan ways ensure they struggle to stay true to their oath. An Acolyte Half-Orc Bard with a penchant for lutes and an even bigger one for Blood Sacrifices. In BG3, each playthrough is impacted by the class, race, subclass, and background you’ve chosen during character creation, ensuring that your character’s journey is as unique as they are. Characters you meet on the road can react differently to you based on these factors. Some may welcome you in as kin, a Tiefling among Tieflings, and offer special insights that will benefit you later on. Others may immediately have you in their targets, like a follower of Selune in a temple of Shar, and seek only to take you down–unless you can convince them otherwise. Background goals are a series of hidden goals to be unlocked by leaning in to your roleplayed character. An Entertainer yearns for an audience, and might want to try performing a play with an automaton or become the muse of the Bard Alfira. A Folk Hero wants their legend to grow, and is rewarded for good deeds and grand rescues. Your character’s class build and ancestry are also reflected in the ways they can interact with the world around them, through situational dialogue, reactions to particular environments, and insights pulled from their backgrounds. A Githyanki Cleric may have the knowledge needed to sow peace between long-warring clans. A Tiefling Barbarian may only know how to stoke the fires of their ancient tension. So exactly how much does your character’s reactivity add to your experience? Well, to put it into perspective, in BG3, players have a choice of 12 classes, 11 races, and 46 subclasses, as well as 12 character backgrounds to give context to their character and heighten certain skills. And there are over 200 dialogue responses tailored specifically for the Duergar subclass alone. While the level of reactivity will vary between each race and class, each combination will greatly impact how you experience Faerûn. Every adventure needs a hero, every hero needs an identity What does a hero look like? In Baldur’s Gate 3, we’ve given players the power to customise everything from freckle patterns and scars to the colour of each individual eye. With the dynamic vitiligo slider, players can finely adjust their character’s appearance to reflect this unique skin condition. The greying hair slider & ageing slider ensures that age is not limited to presets but can be customised precisely to each player’s liking. Players can also customise the size of their character, with strong body types available for most of the playable races–a feature that can turn a conventionally lanky Elf into an imposing figure. Craft your own style You’ll also find a rich variety of hair options at the customisation screen, letting you colour your mane any hue from neon pink to an Oppenheimer shade of existential-dread black, and even add a secondary highlight colour throughout. With 66 hairstyles at the ready, there’s a lot to experiment with on the follicle side of fantasy. Hair is available for every race and body type across the board, and isn’t restricted by body type. A hulking Half-Orc can sport the adorable braids of a milkmaid. A Halfling can have the hair of a Viking warrior. An ethereal Half-Elf can wear the sharp angular bob of someone who wants to speak to your manager. The choice is in your hands. You’ll also spot options to choose your body type, gender, appearance, voice and pronouns all independently from each other, allowing you the freedom to create a character that best represents you or the character you want to roleplay, without constraints. Character creation is just the beginning of the epic roleplaying journey you’re about to join. There are no limits to your adventure, and we’re excited to see the incredible stories you’ll create–each one as unique as the characters you’ve crafted. Baldur’s Gate 3 is out now on PlayStation 5. 12. On September 9 1998, Spyro the Dragon made his mischievous debut on the original PlayStation, capturing the hearts of gamers of all ages. To celebrate 25 years of Spyro, we sat down with both the original developers from Insomniac Games, as well as the team behind the remaster, Spyro Reignited Trilogy at Toys for Bob, to learn how the beloved dragon came to be. Ted Price, President, Insomniac Games: We had just shipped our first game, Disruptor, and were brainstorming on what to do next. Our longtime partner and producer Mark Cerny pointed out that there was a notable vacuum in the family-friendly market on the PlayStation. Shortly afterward, Craig Stitt who had been creating environment art on Disruptor said, ‘I’ve always wanted to make a game featuring a dragon.’ And we were off to the races. At the time, 3D platformers were still a relatively new genre, which led to a host of challenges Insomniac needed to tackle. Brian Hastings, Head of Creative Strategy, Insomniac Games: From a gameplay perspective, our goals initially were just to figure out how to make 3D platforming gameplay work. It sounds straight-forward now, but back then we had never made one before and there were a lot of challenges to figure out. For instance, how to make fast movement work in 3D without giving players motion sickness, how to create intuitive controls in three-dimensional space without an analog stick, how to create platforming and combat challenges without the precise sense of distance you get from 2D, and just generally what kinds of metrics resulted in a fun level design space in 3D. Many of the lessons learned from developing the original Spyro the Dragon trilogy would go on to influence future Insomniac titles, and aspects of the original level design tenets can be seen in Insomniac’s approach to exploration today. Brian Hastings: Spyro has had a huge influence in our approach to exploration and discovery across all our games. In Spyro we learned the importance of creating a world where every part of it is memorable in some way and every secret nook is worth investigating. We’ve had that same attitude with all aspects of our games ever since. The best thing about this approach is that it empowers everyone at the company to find their own ways to add something special and meaningful to the parts of the game they’re working on. While we look back at the original Spyro the Dragon title as a classic from the PlayStation 1 library, it was not an immediate success upon release. For a small developer working in an entirely new genre, Insomniac took risks in creating a new franchise, but it paid off as love of the Purple Dragon spread amongst PlayStation owners. Ted Price: Frankly, we were surprised by Spyro’s success. That’s because at first the game didn’t sell very well. But it kept selling. And selling. We felt extremely fortunate that the game had somehow broken through[…] partly because it was a very accessible game with straightforward controls, fun combat, lots of gameplay variety and, in my opinion, a compelling ‘collect every last gem!’ level design. Another reason was that, along with Crash Bandicoot, it was an all-ages game that was safe for kids but fun for adults as well. Over the course of three games, Spyro solidified himself as an icon of both the PS1 console, and the 3D platforming genre. With how beloved the original trilogy was amongst Spyro fans, remastering the classic games would be a daunting task for any developer. Thankfully Toys for Bob, the studio responsible for creating the Skylanders franchise, were no strangers to the lovable dragon. The team took immense care in perfecting and remastering every aspect of the original games, while also infusing their own updates and love for Spyro throughout the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Paul Yan, Co-Studio Head, Toys For Bob: There were so many things that were important to really nail but first and foremost, we knew we needed to get gameplay absolutely right – and by that, I mean we knew we needed to recreate gameplay precisely. If you’re the type of player who can navigate the levels blindfolded, we wanted to design to that kind of muscle memory so the game would feel and play just like you remembered it. Similarly, the game wouldn’t be what it is without Stewart Copeland’s iconic soundtrack. We knew we had to offer those original tracks in their pure form but we also added an option to experience a more dynamic interpretation that responds to gameplay in subtle, more contemporary ways. Where things got really challenging (and subjective) was in the game’s look. We initially did a pass on the characters by interpreting them as if they were higher resolution ports, but it was clear that we had to go much, much, much further to really flesh out the charm and personality clearly implied by the original games. This is where the term remaster kind of fails as a description of Reignited because not only did we rebuild gameplay from the ground up, but we had to redesign environments, props, characters, and cutscenes by piecing together our own interpretations of the original designs, the memories that fans cherished most, and the authorial intent from the original Insomniac team. It was only in going through that archaeological process and talking it through with the Insomniac crew that we were able to feel more confident about the soul of the game’s designs in order to build new aesthetics on top of that foundation. The Spyro Reignited Trilogy allowed lifelong Spyro fans to relive their formative experiences charging, gliding, and soaring across the beautiful worlds of Spyro, while also introducing brand new fans to the franchise. The team at Toys for Bob worked alongside Insomniac to ensure the classic feel of Spyro stayed true in Reignited, while also providing feedback on the visual upgrades. Brian Hastings: I think there’s something special about the simplicity of Spyro’s gameplay that has allowed it to stand the test of time. Games in general have gotten more complex over the years. There are more buttons, more moves, more upgrades, more layers of mechanics. But the core fun of Spyro was the simple joy of exploring these big, beautiful worlds, collecting gems, and chasing sheep. That simple fantasy of exploration and discovery in a world full of secrets, magic and surprises is something that doesn’t fade with time. That said, what Toys for Bob has done with graphics in the worlds is nothing short of amazing. Spyro’s worlds feel more magical now than we ever dreamt was possible back in the 1990s. John Fiorito, Head of Operations, Insomniac Games: We couldn’t think of a better team to reimagine the original Spyro games. We were so impressed with the Skylanders series and wanted to see what they would do with Reignited. The Toys for Bob team visited us early in development to show the game off and we knew right away that the reimagining would be faithful to the originals while bringing the franchise to a new generation of players. Insomniac collaborated on the look and feel of the game and Toys for Bob were always receptive to our suggestions and feedback. It was exciting to see the game come together on new hardware and the attention to detail throughout reignited was phenomenal. I played all three games when they came out! Ted Price: On behalf of all of us at Insomniac, thank you to Toys for Bob for being so faithful to the original vision for Spyro. To the players who have been with Spyro since the beginning, and the new fans experiencing his adventures for the first time, thank you for making the last 25 years of Spyro magical! Paul Yan: Spyro debuted at a formative time for many gamers. He introduced us to 3D platforming in a way only a dragon can and it clearly left a lasting impression. Insomniac crafted such a timeless and appealing design and gave him an endearing go-get-em kind of attitude that’s really easy to root for. Did you know there’s been over a dozen different Spyro games? As the reins get passed between different developers, it’s interesting to experience all the different takes and shifts in emphasis, but what I’ve always felt, is that Spyro games are at their best when they build on a foundation of great movement controls in vast, colorful worlds full of charm and wonder – where Spyro is a young, plucky, optimistic underdog ready to take on any challenge that’s hurled at him. That’s the timeless icon I know and find myself gravitating to often. John Fiorito: Spyro is an underdog who never gives up. He always tries to do the right thing and help everyone he can. And he can breathe fire. What’s not to love? Play the Spyro Reignited Trilogy today on PS5 and PS4. View the full article

  16. Hello PlayStation nation! My name’s James Hunt and I’m the Game Director for Fast Travel Games’ new PS VR2 title, Mannequin, coming in 2024. You may know the Fast Travel team from our long history of single-player VR experiences like Cities: VR and the upcoming Vampire: The Masquerade – Justice, but Mannequin will be our first ever in-house multiplayer title, allowing up to 5 players to enjoy suspense, social deduction and fast, sudden action. Let me tell you all about it. Play Video Frozen in time In Mannequin, our first original IP since 2019’s The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets, the world is reeling from the appearance of an extraterrestrial presence. Sites across the globe have started mysteriously freezing in time, and first responders called to these areas have become motionless, helpless statues. Not only that, but a race of alien beings has been discovered at these locations, known to you and I as Mannequins. They boast potentially life-threatening abilities, and it’s up to a team of special Agents to hunt down these supernatural new threats before they themselves fall victim to the Mannequin’s powers. What follows is a tense game of cat and mouse. Fight to a stand still In a standard match of Mannequin, three players work together as the titular aliens, facing off against a team of two Agents. As Mannequins, you’ll have the ability to assume a pose and then freeze yourself, turning into a statue with the appearance of one of the trapped first responders. You can use this power to set up the perfect ambush, lying in wait for Agents to appear and then dashing forward freezing them in-place with a touch of the hand. But Agents are far from defenseless. Armed with state of the art technology, they can scan levels for a Mannequin’s rough location. Catch the enemy in the act or suss out which statue is an enemy in disguise and you’ll need to blast them with your laser pistol. The first team to wipe out the other wins, but there’s a few more twists that make Mannequin a game of intense strategy and shifting favor. The race is on Each of the game’s levels features Power Stations that Mannequins can steadily drain. Draining two Power Stations will grant the team enhanced powers, including the ability to see exactly where your enemy is. This can quickly turn the tide of a match, but Power Stations make for high risk areas that Agents are likely to keep under close watch. Make sure you’re not stumbling into a trap. Agents also have another reason to defend these Power Stations. If Mannequins haven’t claimed them within three minutes of the start of a match, the human team will get the upgrades instead. Each side can also revive any downed allies, but this too creates the perfect opportunity for a deadly ambush. This makes each game of Mannequin a sharp, tight and tense exercise in hide and seek. Can the Mannequins fool the Agents into thinking they’re friendly, then strike at the right moment? Or will an Agent’s cunning and use of gadgets help them come out on top? Get involved Here at Fast Travel, we know that making the best multiplayer games can’t happen without the support of our fantastic community. We want to know what you think of today’s reveal and what you want to see in the full game when it launches in 2024. We will have more to share, including the first gameplay footage, soon. We really believe that Mannequin is going to be a flagship multiplayer game for PS VR2, but that can only happen with your help. Until next time, ask yourself – who can you trust?
