Destiny has always been about the chase. Whether you’re knocking out a quick 15-minute Strike for a daily powerful gear drop or convincing your raid team to make one more attempt for that ultra-rare Exotic drop, Destiny is at its best when that next thing you want is just within reach. Destiny 2: Forsaken puts the chase front and center with an engaging storyline, a cornucopia of compelling new loot options and a host of Triumphs (more on those in a bit) to pursue with your friends. Mix all of that with the unparalleled feel of a Bungie shooter and you have a game that has enthralled me for over 500 hours of playtime in 2018. Forsaken’s premise is straightforward enough: avenge the death of your friend, the wisecracking Cayde-6. It’s an unexpectedly personal — and surprisingly effective — storytelling shift, especially when compared to the more ambiguous space-opera yarns that Destiny has spun in the past. Hunting the eight Barons responsible for Cayde’s murder is a propulsive experience, and each showdown is unique enough that the idea never outstays its welcome. Once players see that journey to its conclusion, though, the true endgame of Forsaken reveals itself in the most stunning destination Bungie has crafted to date: The Dreaming City. Without spoiling anything, this new locale is home to an epic mystery worth uncovering on your own, involving multi-week narrative threads spanning the reaches of space and time. A host of new activities also begin to open up to players, including a raid-like experience for smaller fireteams, creating an unprecedented anticipation for reset Tuesdays and the new rewards that await. The randomized weapons and armor perks of Destiny 1 have returned in Forsaken, so players can keep chasing that “God Roll.” This may seem like a minor change, but having the right perks can mean the difference between a weapon feeling like a bucking bronco or a finely tuned headshot machine. As a result, even if you get a piece of loot you already own, it’s still exciting to see if the perks on this version are “the one.” Random drops are only part of Forsaken’s loot pursuit, though. Sometimes-mysterious, often-intricate quests for Exotic and pinnacle weaponry give players a more defined path to high-powered gear, and can usually be chipped away at while working toward other goals. With the effort it takes to get some of those pieces, they also double up as items to show off the hard work you’ve put into the game (and in some cases, how lucky you are). Few things in gaming feel as fulfilling as knocking out multiple goals simultaneously and seeing those sweet completion toasts. Forsaken’s launch heralded the arrival of many quality-of-life updates, but perhaps none as game-changing as the new Collections and Triumphs systems, which act a vast menu of every item and activity that one can obtain and do in Destiny 2. Collectors and Trophy hunters will love the ability to track myriad objectives (like defeating 200 enemies with a magnetic grenade or completing the raid without a single death) and gear across the breadth of game modes, some even awarding unique cosmetic rewards such as ultra-rare player titles (another new addition in Forsaken). At first glance, many of these Triumphs may seem overwhelming, but don’t think too much about those up front — playing the game naturally will usually get you on the right track toward completing at least one Triumph seal. For me, completing most of the weekly content got me close to obtaining a few seals, which in turn kept me motivated to push through and set off after those last few items. There’s that chase again! Of course, many of Destiny’s trickier challenges are better tackled with friends — if you have a kindred spirit in pursuit of a specific Triumph or piece of gear, all the better! (Editor’s note: We’ll get that Shattered Throne ship some day… -JM) When Destiny is firing on all cylinders, there’s nothing like it. The expertly tuned goal / reward loop makes the hours just melt away, and Forsaken provides the best the series has to offer in terms of story, progression, and endgame activities to keep that chase going. If you’ve ever liked what Destiny has to offer in terms of FPS loot chasing, cooperative or competitive play, highly coordinated end-game raiding, mysterious lore that always seems to hint at a grander master plan, or all of the above, now is the perfect time to build your legend. Joyful movement can raise a game’s quality to lofty heights. That’s why it’s so impressive for Marvel’s Spider-Man to swing in and make the core act of traversal a constant wonder. The game is one of 2018’s biggest hits because it layers satisfying combat and a sincere story onto the foundation built by Insomniac’s jubilant web-swinging. Swinging from webs in Marvel’s Spider-Man is intuitive and freeing. Simply holding the R2-button turns every movement into a ballet of blue and red. If you can imagine a complex, death-defying route between skyscrapers or across rooftops, you can execute it with finesse. This experience would be entertaining even if Spider-Man were swinging through an empty city, but Marvel’s New York is brimming with colorful characters, engaging activities, and enough hidden collectibles to make Comic-Con’s merch section envious. The city that never sleeps, indeed. The story the writing team has spun is compelling and authentic. The game stars a full-grown Peter Parker, whose daily battles range from the Super (Kingpin, Rhino, Electro and the rest of the Sinister Gallery) to the human (having a job, paying rent, and maintaining healthy relationships). Parker’s human flaws – including his complicated relationship with Mary Jane – make him a relatable and likeable hero. The overall narrative’s twists and turns are enough to keep even the most casual Spider-Man fans coming back for more. Dealing justice as the heroic web slinger is a triumph in combat design. Players battle crowds of thugs, juggling deadly targets like musclebound bruisers and punks armed with rocket launchers. It’s a gleeful experience zipping between enemies, webbing them to walls, and flinging objects like manhole lids and mailboxes. A suite of gadgets and skill upgrades evolve the crime-fighting experience, offering advantages like sticky Web Bombs and the ability to disarm crooks from afar. Stealth sequences are also liberating, with Spidey’s mobility enabling him to dart through the shadows and satisfyingly web enemies to nearby surfaces. Marvel’s New York is the ideal playground for fighting crime and free-wheeling exploration. The amount of collectibles, side missions, and emergent vigilante opportunities is plentiful without being overwhelming. You truly feel like a Super Hero when you’re swinging along the tops of skyscrapers, receive a police radio call, then swoop down to stop a gang of goons from stealing a car or committing a robbery. Challenge missions like hunting down Black Cat’s calling cards and tackling Taskmaster’s trials also flesh out Spidey’s original universe. Even smaller collection-based objectives, like finding Peter Parker’s many stashed backpacks, provide novel nods to the prolific character’s legacy. Who doesn’t want to discover a fan-made Spider-Man plushie? The many strengths of Marvel’s Spider-Man coalesce into one of the best Super Hero games ever. Even better, the adventure continues with worthwhile DLC story chapters that feature the likes of Black Cat, Hammerhead, and more. Whether you’re a devout comic book reader, lover of Marvel’s cinematic blockbusters, or just a fan of amazing video games, don’t miss one of 2018’s masterpieces. What was your favorite game of 2018? At first glance, Motion Twin’s acclaimed roguelike platformer Dead Cells could be accused of being a little light on content – just a handful of ‘biomes’ and four bosses to master. Yet somehow the plucky French studio turned in 2018’s premier time-sink – a game that grabs you from the get-go and refuses to let go. In the months since launch it’s become pure gaming comfort food – I cannot put the thing down. So why, given its leanness, has it got its hook in so deep? Let’s break it down: Perfect ‘game feel’ Think of a game. Disregard its narrative, level design, puzzles and visual design. Would the simple act of moving around and interacting with that game’s world still be fun? If the answer is yes, that’s great ‘game feel’ in action. It’s a rare quality, but Dead Cells nails it. Movement in Dead Cells is supremely polished, with every action offering a delicious snatch of environmental feedback. The way doors splinter like balsa wood when you crash through them; the shower of gold when you bust open a coin cache; the mechanical crunch of the game’s elevators whirring into motion. Every interaction is a joy. And can you name a more satisfying ‘ground pound’ in all of gaming than the breathtaking “THHHHUNK” its nameless protagonist makes as it power-slams into the ground? It’s rivalled maybe only by Kratos’ axe-catch as the most pleasing button-press of 2018. Given that Dead Cells demands you play the same levels over and over and over again for modest incremental reward, its ‘feel’ is completely central to its success. It’s often a game where the journey – not the destination – is the reward. And that journey is a loop, not a line, so round and round and round I go… Secrets, riddles and rumours Dead Cells wears its influences on its sleeve. Its sprawling map design is cut from Castlevania-hued cloth; its procedural generation engine doffs its cap to Spelunky; and the oblique, less-is-more world building is pure Dark Souls. It’s a game stuffed with secrets and riddles. Who is the protagonist? Why are they here? What’s behind all those locked doors? What – and, more importantly, where – is the creature that’s escaped from the Toxic Sewers? Dead Cells is in no hurry to show you everything it has to offer, and even on my 213th run it’s offering up new surprises. A friend recently bragged to me that he’d found a hidden room containing a game-altering Dark Souls-esque bonfire. That was news to me – and the longer I played without finding it, the more I suspected it was a fanciful Chinese whisper that had caught fire in the virtual playgrounds of the internet. Then, sure enough, 80-plus hours in and on my umpteenth play through, I rolled through a gap in the wall to find the chamber exactly as described. With every playthrough, Dead Cells answers a few questions, and poses a few more, refusing to let you put it down and move on to the next thing. Must. Collect. Everything. Games have used all manner of elaborate infographics and flowcharts to communicate player progression through the years. Some are elegant, some are migraine-inducing – but none are as delightful as Dead Cells. At the start of every run, just outside the door to the first area, your accumulated power-ups dangle from the ceiling in a dazzling array of glass jars, glimmering in the torchlight. It’s a beautiful visual mechanic. But the tragic thing? Some of the jars are empty. Just a vacant space where a shiny, precious little tchotchke could reside. Put your ear up to the TV and maybe you can hear them whisper: “Fill me. Fill me. Fill me”. So, no matter how dispiriting your most recent demise, back you go into the fray for one more go-round on Dead Cells’ Sisyphean spinning top. Player choice matters There are bits of Dead Cells I really don’t care for. The Toxic Sewers are a wretched ordeal; the Conjunctivius boss fight does not jive with my play style at all; and you may as well arm yourself with a rusty spoon than wield that infernal Broad Sword. And that’s fine, because the game doesn’t force you to endure any of the above. The experience is almost entirely customisable, from the route you take through the game, to the items you decide to pick up. Whether you want to stay in your comfort zone and spam turret skills from a safe distance, road-test some of the game’s more esoteric powers, or throw caution to the wind and attempt to unlock those speed-run gates – Dead Cells is there for you, offering a different experience every time. A perfect learning curve Like all great games, Dead Cells delivers on the “easy to play, hard to master” maxim. It gradually drip-feeds you items, powers and hard-won experience until, without noticing, you’ve evolved from a pitiful weakling into a mutant-wrecking agent of mass destruction. It’s a game you’re constantly improving at – even when you’re failing miserably. I remember comparing notes with colleagues the first weekend after launch. I was eight hours in and had come up against the first boss a couple of times. I could never conceive of a time where I would be capable of taking that thing down. Fast-forward 80 hours of playtime and it’s a breeze. Right now I feel the same way about Hand of the King on NG+. Every time I face it, I last a few seconds more. And en-route to that inevitable defeat I sharpen my skills, buff my RNG stat, unlock a new item or two, and inch a little closer to victory. Any day now, then I can finally put this game down and move on. Right? What was your favorite game of 2018? Click here to vote in the PlayStation.Blog Game of the Year 2018 Awards! Spyro has charged back into our lives, horns first! PlayStation has a rich history with the lovable purple dragon, and returning to his original adventures is a whimsical homecoming. This remastered trilogy is much more than an upscaled nostalgia trip thanks to how well the timeless formula of the originals has aged. Spyro the Dragon was a pioneering game in the fledgling years of 3D platformers. Original developer Insomniac Games captivated players with liberating, exploration-friendly gameplay. Climbing up to a stage’s high point and gliding to collect far off gems was a magical revelation back in 1998, and that formula has aged beautifully thanks to the wizards at Toys For Bob. We live in a magical era of blockbuster games that rival Hollywood productions, yet returning to the simple, pure world of Spyro is a breath of fresh fire air. For example, your goal in the first game is to free your dragon brethren, collect all the gems, and toast the villainous Gnasty Gnorc. That’s it. This distilled experience allows players to relish the joy of combing through expertly designed levels hunting each shiny collectible. Chasing down those pesky dragon egg thieves and flaming every last Gnorc restores the soul, just like butterflies rejuvenate Spyro’s little dragonfly helper, Sparx. Speaking of Sparx, Toys For Bob have made tons of wondrous quality-of-life-changes, like the dragonfly’s ability to point at the nearest gem. This optional feature saves tons of time spent scouring the map for that last bit of treasure. A new minimap feature lets you see whole levels at a glance and spot potential secrets hidden around blind corners. To bring it all together, the Guidebook has been unified across all three titles, which makes tracking level completion info a breeze. Like Spyro himself, the littlest things can make the biggest difference. The sequels that followed the first game — Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage and Spyro: Year of the Dragon — are also delightful. Collecting oodles of gems and crucial items like orbs and dragon eggs to unlock new areas to explore is still the goal. These sequels also spice things up with minigames like Spyro hitting the ice for some hockey, or blasting rockets at baddies with militaristic penguin, Sergeant James Byrd. Quirky characters like Hunter the Cheetah and Elora the Faun also expand Spyro’s lovable world. The entire cast has also received a flattering makeover. Even the most beautiful treasures naturally tarnish over time, yet the crafty devs at Toys For Bob have expertly restored these Spyro classics well beyond their original luster. The Spyro Reignited Trilogy is visually stunning whether you’re comparing the remastered games to your memories or going in with fresh eyes. The onscreen action rivals today’s prettiest CG films. Spyro’s spunky attitude is keenly conveyed through detailed animations, from impatient tail swishes to his curious eyes darting playfully. He’s undeniably adorable. Every burst of fire breath exemplifies the skill and love that went into this remaster, like how the flames illuminate the environment and scorch patches of grass. Every second sparkles. The Dragon Realms where Spyro lives are exciting and beautiful locales to visit. Like the inventive worlds from the game, Spyro Reignited Trilogy perfectly injects captivating, innocent joy into our gaming libraries this year. What was your favorite game of 2018? Wow! Did 2018 overhear all our praise about last year’s lineup and refuse to be bested? From the word “go” this year has delivered an embarrassment of video game riches. Celeste and Monster Hunter: World kickstarted the cavalcade of hits, and the pace didn’t let up all the way through holiday juggernauts like Red Dead Redemption 2. It was also a tremendous year for PlayStation exclusives, with showstoppers like Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War setting records for the platform. So, there are a ton of amazing games to look back on for this year’s Game of the Year awards. That’s why we need your votes to help decide the best of the best. Many of the categories below will be familiar from previous years, but there are some new additions to look out for. Multiplayer has been split up into competitive and cooperative as games continue to evolve in the online space. Best Sound Design is an opportunity to shed light on the subtle ways audio designers bring their worlds to life. Important note: As always, any game that previously won a Platinum Trophy in the “Most Anticipated” category is barred from another nomination in that category. The polls below are open now and will stay that way until the year ends at 11:59pm Pacific on December 31. Don’t forget to tell a friend to vote in the polls as well! What a year 2018 has been for video games! Looking back on all the awesome games that released is always fun, but we get a little sentimental thinking of all the hard-working, talented people who brought them to life. Speaking of those creators, we’re back with a treasure trove of colorful, clever, and heartfelt holiday cards from our friends in the video game industry. So sit back, relax, grab a cup of cocoa, and bask in the good cheer… 505 Games ❅ 505 Games (Battle Ages / Battle Islands) ❅ 505 Games (Gems of War) ❅ Akupara Games ❅ Arika ❅ Bandai Namco ❅ Bend Studio ❅ Bit Kid ❅ Bungie ❅ EA (Anthem) ❅ EA (Battlefield V) ❅ EA (Madden) ❅ EA (NBA Live 19) ❅ Epic Games ❅ Frontier Developments ❅ Gearbox Software ❅ Guerilla Games ❅ Idea Factory International ❅ Japan Studio ❅ Koei Tecmo ❅ Kojima Productions ❅ Konami (PES 2019) ❅ Konami (Super Bomberman) ❅ London Studio ❅ Magic Design Studios ❅ Media Molecule ❅ Milestone ❅ Modus ❅ Mossmouth ❅ My.com ❅ Naughty Dog ❅ NIS America ❅ Outer Loop Games ❅ Owlchemy Labs ❅ Pixelopus ❅ Playful ❅ Polyarc ❅ Polyphony ❅ Psyonix ❅ Santa Monica Studio ❅ Share Factory ❅ Spike Chunsoft (#2) ❅ Squanch Games ❅ Square Enix (Kingdom Hearts 3) ❅ Square Enix (The Last Remnant Remastered) ❅ Square Enix (Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon) ❅ Square Enix (Dragon Quest XI) ❅ Square Enix (Just Cause 4) ❅ Sucker Punch ❅ Tripwire ❅ Ubisoft (Rainbow Six Siege) ❅ Ubisoft (Far Cry 5) ❅ Xseed Marvelous ❅ Zoink View the full article

Lemmings: A cute, clumsy and clueless species of green-mopped creatures on a journey home, in desperate need of help. For over 25 years, players have answered their call, with millions playing the puzzle game that became a pop-culture phenomenon. We cheered when we saved them, cried when they died and as a schoolkid back in the ’90s, my classmates and I seemed hell-bent on killing the poor things in the most barbaric way possible. Kids were cruel in the ’90s. We had no internet. Now it’s time for a whole new generation to save/slaughter those adorable critters once again, with a brand new Lemmings game out today, designed specifically for your mobile device. And here’s a fun fact: did you know that Lemmings is officially part of the PlayStation family? It’s true — originally released for the Amiga, Lemmings was published by legendary Liverpool studio Psygnosis. The company later joined PlayStation and went on to create classics such as WipEout and Colony Wars. And it all started with Lemmings! Wanted: A new home As our story begins, our cuddly friends find themselves homeless as a result of an environmental catastrophe. No, this time it’s not our fault. The Lemmings take to the stars, exploring the universe to find a nice, cozy corner somewhere where they can put their feet up, kick back, have a cup of tea and wait for everything to blow over. Of the 18 quintillion locations out there, they have an uncanny knack of ending up in places full of fire, razor-sharp saw blades, bubbles (trust me, bubbles are the worst) and other hazards that promise to push you to the limit and have your Lemmings pushing up daisies. Conquer levels and put your Lemmings to work, converting hostile planets into beautiful utopias, where your Lemmings can earn some much needed R&R. Mobile friendly design We’re all passionate gamers but mobile gaming allows us to indulge in our passions when more traditional methods are not available. Standing in a packed bus, sitting on the toilet, pretending to listen to your partner and so on. We took the Lemmings experience that people know and love and re-engineered it to make the most of smartphones and tablets. We’ve designed levels that are played in portrait orientation, as this is the most comfortable position to hold a device with one hand. We worked tirelessly on touch controls, removing secondary elements like camera control and making it as simple for players to assess the level, plan a strategy and execute it. It’s the Lemmings game you know and love, redesigned for the best experience on your device. Under your direction, they’ll dig, climb, build, block and fall through levels, with an ease of control that is both fun and challenging. Infinite possibilities Lemmings utilizes procedurally generated content, carefully curated by our design team. Our game features more levels than every previous Lemmings game combined. There are thousands of levels in the game already and we’re only just getting started. Levels are grouped into an ever-expanding universe of worlds, with each having its own distinct visual theme. As well as Earth-like planets with land, water and plant life, you’ll encounter unusual locations like a seaworld that becomes a Lemming water park, a planetary disco ball and even a meatball planet. Watch out for that one, it’s spicy! Meet the tribes On your travels, you’ll encounter and rescue a variety of unique Lemmings, each with a distinctive look. These are the tribes, groups of themed characters with big rewards for players who can complete them. More and more tribes are coming soon, themed around seasonal holidays, pop-culture events and more. What are you waiting for? Let’s go! Lemmings is out now on mobile devices. The game features in-app purchases but can be played entirely for free. View the full article

When co-producer Keith Leary and I were first briefed on the details of the God of War reboot story, our creative wheels were spinning. We had many conversations imagining, in very broad terms, what the new music might sound like. Would the bombastic onslaught of strings, brass, and choir remain? Would the fans like music that deviated from the sound of the original? Who would be up for the challenge of reimagining the sound of GOW? We began by laying out a few high-level ideas to pitch to game director Cory Barlog. The first was to have Bear McCreary compose the score. Keith had worked with Bear on SOCOM 4 and was impressed with his ability to integrate ethnic instruments into a modern orchestral sound, and by his gift for composing memorable themes. We were certain that the new score would rely on an assortment of Scandinavian instruments to help place it in the Norse world, so Bear’s expertise in this area was crucial. Cory and Bear immediately hit it off, and we knew that we had found the right fit. The second idea was to use an Icelandic choir to sing in Old Norse rather than a traditional choir singing Latin text. We were aiming to retain the DNA of the original scores by using strings, brass, and choir, but wanted to tweak the choir just a bit to reflect the new setting of the game. The final idea was to give the deceased mother of Atreus, Faye, a voice. Hats off to Keith for “discovering” Faroese singer, Eivør Pálsdóttiron on YouTube. We were instantly struck by the beauty and power in her voice especially in her song, Trollabundin. Could this be the voice of Faye? A call to Evior’s manager Roy Lidstone-Jackson led to a meeting in Los Angeles and a demo recording session for Bear and Eivor. Sometimes creative pairings are like arranged marriages, good intentions don’t often make good partners. But in this case, the collaboration between Bear and Eivør was meant to be, and she brought Faye to life. Eivør’s unique vocal stylings are heard throughout the game, reminding us that Faye is ever present, guiding the way for Kratos and Atreus. The version of “Memories of Mother” on the official soundtrack is a special piece that takes advantage of Eivør’s amazing range. From the subtle humming of the first statement of the theme to the soaring high notes over the choir in the closing statement, her voice draws you in. The more intimate version, subtitled “Farewell to Faye,” is just as captivating, and it’s thrilling to hear the character’s song reimagined in this way. Listening now, I too am reminded of Faye, and I can’t imagine her represented by any voice other than Eivør’s. It is impossible to overstate the gratitude that I feel towards everyone who collaborated on this score. Bear and his production team at Sparks & Shadows, especially Sam Ewing, Joanna Pane, Ed Trybek, and Steve Kaplan, were brilliant production partners and helped with the massive amount of recording required. The musicians in London, Iceland, Prague, and Nashville all brought their distinctive personalities to the music. Santa Monica Studio supported the vision and provided the means for us to globe trot and capture something special. My colleagues Monty Mudd, Joel Yarger, Zak Millman, and the entire Sony Interactive Music Team, once again, brought their A game. To Keith Leary, Chuck Doud, and the World Wide Studio leadership, thank you for your commitment to excellence. And to Eivør for bringing the Norse magic. God of War is now $39.99 ($49.99 CAD). Hit the PlayStation Store to experience a new beginning. View the full article

We have now ended an unforgettable year for Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition with the champion officially being crowned for Capcom Cup 2018! We’d like to extend our gratitude to everyone who has made this possible, from all the tournament organizers, volunteers, professional players, and especially the community. Our year of mayors, presidents, and kings would not have been possible without you! But on to the future, as all the lights from Capcom Cup 2018 have created a shadow in the form of Kage, the newest character in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition and the beginning of the next season. Kage, meaning “shadow” in Japanese, is the physical embodiment of the Satsui no Hado, an evil force rooted in humanity’s obsession with power. Those who have control over this force, like Akuma, carry immense strength, but at the cost of their humanity. Ryu is one such being who knows the Satsui no Hado exists within him and has been struggling to keep it at bay. Hypothetically, if Ryu let the Satsui no Hado consume him, the being known as Evil Ryu takes over and begins a path of destruction. However, after the events of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Ryu has been able to overcome the Satsui no Hado’s influence and be at peace…until the force decides to have a mind of its own. Kage rises in order to prove to Ryu that his true power comes from the Satsui no Hado. Seeing as how Kage has ties to both Ryu and Evil Ryu, his move set takes inspiration from both of them. Kage has the iconic Hadoken and Shoryuken, though the former does not act like a projectile unless used in the air. Kage also has Evil Ryu’s Shakunetsu Hadoken, a red fireball that goes full screen, and Ryusokyaku, a wide arcing axe kick. Finally, Kage has access to two Critical Arts, Ryu’s Metsu Shoryuken and the Shun Goku Satsu, commonly known as the Raging Demon. Both of these Critical Arts feature a background of crimson red to show the stark difference between Ryu’s serene blue. Kage is available for MSRP $5.99 or 100,000 Fight Money on December 16! Along with Kage, the latest balance changes to the rest of the 32 characters have arrived! Five of the characters – F.A.N.G, Vega, Chun-Li, Abigail, and M. Bison – received brand new moves to enhance their playstyle. Head to training mode to see how your favorite characters have changed! Finally, we have officially confirmed the Capcom Pro Tour will be returning in 2019 to offer another year of vigorous competition and gasp-worthy moments. Stay tuned for more details regarding the Capcom Pro Tour and Capcom Cup 2019! Once again, thank you for an incredible 2018. We can’t wait to show you what we have planned in 2019! Smash Hit Plunder is out in the US regions! You can play the game single-player, but you can also play together with friends and family with local co-op and vs. multiplayer gameplay using the TV screen. Single Player & Co-op Smash Hit Plunder has a full single player campaign, with plenty of story and levels to go through. It’s really important for a game to give you a sense of progression, to make it feel like a “full game” rather than a demo. In Smash Hit Plunder, we have a various ways of feeling like you are progressing through the game and getting better at it. There is the story — with a start, middle and end — and it feels like a complete game by giving both context and an aim to the game. You have signed a contract with Mordred, the loan shark, to agree to take on the family castle debts. You have to pay back your mortgage to be able to recover the castle, and keep Mordred happy. Of course, there’s also the ghostly conclusion… You are scored for each level, and by collecting more loot you are awarded more crowns. As you get more crowns, new levels, story and game modes unlock. By unlocking new levels and game modes you get new tasks to do, places to explore, things to discover and new challenges. You’ll be tested in navigation, exploration, efficiency, speed, accuracy, observation and even teamwork. All your skills are tested in different ways and amounts, in differing levels and modes — and it’s this mixture and pacing that makes you feel like you are getting better at the game, self-learning new ways of doing things, and feeling like you have something you can improve on as you progress. There are three different game modes to play in each level: Treasure Rush: Smash, burn, and pillage everything and collect as much loot as possible within the time limit. Your timer is always ticking down so you will end up finding your most profitable route through a level, much like in the Katamari series. Scavenger Hunt: Now it’s time to find the item most wanted by Grandma. Look in your book, recall where that item is in the dungeon and race to get there! Try not to disturb the ghosts on your way! The time limit ticks down, but everytime you find and collect the right item you get loot and extra time to find the next. Rather like Crazy Taxi, the quicker you find that next item the larger the score and the more the bonus time. Freeplay: Do away with a time limit and have unlimited health, and explore at your own pace. Find the best sources of loot, see where all the secrets are hidden, and scout out your path to riches. Of course you can just mess around if you wish; I quite like building and balancing the biggest pile of objects all around the level into one tall tower, then smashing or burning the lot in one go. This mode is also perfect for people new to VR, allowing them the freedom to get used to the experience before the serious competition begins. All three of these game modes are single-player, but at any time you can have someone join you while you are in VR by using the TV screen and another controller. The TV player will join as a friendly Goblin! They can either start alongside by joining in the level-select area, or drop into a game in progress. If you don’t wish them to be there anymore, they can leave at any time. This means you can either play through the whole campaign co-op if you wish, or just have someone join you quickly for that one room full of ghosts or to help with that one object you can find in Scavenger Hunt. We don’t penalize you in any way for getting co-op help, but you can see a breakdown at the end of who got what as well as your combined score. This allows similar sort of feel to that of Zelda: Four Swords: you can work together to complete the dungeon if you like, but you can also compete for the highest score! Smash Hit Plunder does have online leaderboards you can compete in, but typically most people ignore standard leaderboards unless they are in the top 100 or so players. It’s also pretty boring scrolling through a long list of names which mean nothing to you. In Smash Hit Plunder we have come up with a new system that uses the leaderboard data in a really interesting way, so that it gives you realistic goals based on your abilities, and if you complete those goals you get rewarded. We call these Trials. We generate a fresh Trials for you automatically at the start of each level — each Trial different from the last. You may have one based on how many items your friend has smashed in a level, perhaps one based on how far you ventured into the level last time, or perhaps if you are in the top 10 then telling you how much you have to score to get the top rank in the world. It gives you a great immediate goal and a reward if you have improved your skills last time you tried a level. The system both gives you a sense of progression, and always tests your own skill level. Having that extra friend coming in really helps you nail those top spots! VS. Multiplayer While you can fight each other in co-op if you wanted to, a more arranged competition is really fun. Now you can have one VR player and up to three TV players playing against each other in either of our two vs. modes in our bigger dungeons. Jewel Duel: Grandma has lost jewelry boxes full of treasure in each of the dungeon rooms. Follow Grandma to the room she’s in, smash up the room and discover the box. Now come the brawling action as you have to be the first to give the jewelry box to Grandma to win its precious prize! Throw anything you can find at the player with the box to get them to drop it. The team with the most treasure wins! Poltergeist Panic: This is one is special, as it really only works because of the different views the VR and TV players have. It’s a little like hide and seek, but with much more action! The VR player is a Poltergeist — a ghost that cannot be seen but can interact with the living world and move objects. The Poltergeist has to destroy the dungeon and get enough gems to unlock the trapped ghosts in each room. The TV Goblins have to stop the VR Poltergeist, but how do they do that if they cannot see the player? They have to look for clues, for the trail of destruction and try and catch the Poltergeist in action. When they think they have found the Poltergeist, they can use their Torch to reveal them. The Goblins also have a bit of their own magic which charges up over time. When ready, a Goblin can cast a spell over the dungeon which reveals where the Poltergeist is hiding. Throw objects at the Poltergeist, whether they are hidden or revealed, in order to dispel them and stop them from freeing the ghosts. If the Poltergeist runs out of time or health, the Goblins win, but if the Poltergeist frees enough ghosts, they win! In conclusion, I hope you can see how much there really is to do in Smash Hit Plunder — either by yourself or with friends and family. Go and enjoy Smash Hit Plunder today. View the full article

Howdy! Rockstar’s open-world outlaw epic Red Dead Redemption 2 is the big winner for November, handily securing the top PS4 spot on the PlayStation Store download charts. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and Fallout 76 rounded out the top three there. England: March 20, 1912. Alistair Rhodes, elusive patriarch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Chaos storyline, hosts a sumptuous gala at his manor in the countryside. Friends and acquaintances, dressed to the nines, join the revelry alongside an impressive display of Alistair’s relics, artifacts and luxurious artwork. That is, until a mysterious force takes hold of the party, transforming all but four guests into zombies. Those remaining: a phony psychic, a disgraced stage-show gunslinger, a retired brigadier general and Alistair’s loyal butler. This unlikely crew of heroes must unite and get armed if they wish to make it through the deep, dark, “Dead of the Night.” Photo Gallery The newest Black Ops Zombies Experience, “Dead of the Night” is a spine-tingling prequel to the “Voyage of Despair” map for the Chaos storyline. It introduces players to Alistair Rhodes, Scarlett’s estranged father, along with a star-studded cast: Madame Mirela, Gideon Jones, “The Brigadier” and the Butler, Godfrey, each portrayed by an iconic celebrity talent. Though our newest crop of heroes is privy to wall-buy weapons and grenades galore, it’s shaping up to be the longest night of their lives — and there’s no telling what fate lies in the cards for these four. A dramatic map of grandiose design that mixes an art nouveau sensibility with gothic aesthetics, “Dead of the Night” boasts an impressive estate with staircase-lined grounds, a dark surrounding forest, a ghastly greenhouse and one invariably haunted cemetery (among other areas too terrifying to mention). Dotted throughout the palatial landscape are various mechanisms that beg to be tinkered with, and hidden traps teeming with diabolical zombie-stopping-power (which will take guts and coordination to unlock!). Besides the mysterious map layout, “Dead of the Night” hosts many more types of nightmarish ghouls and monsters. You will face undead partygoers, Catalyst Zombies, powerful werewolf mini-bosses and swooping vampire bats who transform into light-footed, Nosferatu-like creatures. Beyond the existence of these otherworldly enemies lies unimaginable secrets and clues to Alistair’s past, present and future, just waiting for a keen player’s discovery. But never fear: players are well-equipped to face the challenges of this devious map, with the introduction of an all-new wonder weapon of unforeseen power. If you have what it takes to unlock this mystifying tool, you may — just may — make it through the night. Don’t miss this harrowing, exciting adventure against the undead: pick up your copy of Black Ops Pass to play “Dead of the Night,” available now! Not only will you gain access to the wildest and spookiest party in 1912 England, you’ll gain even more content for Black Ops 4. That includes Elevation and Madagascar, two new Multiplayer maps; classic, bonus characters for Blackout like Shadowman and Reaper; and “Classified,” the beautifully re-imagined Zombies “Five” map from Black Ops. So, send in your RSVP to Alistair’s fabulous gala and get Black Ops Pass today. View the full article

Since the launch of PS4 and PS4 Pro, several legendary franchises have been reborn for PS4, with rebuilt graphics and refined gameplay. But it takes a lot of hard work and technical know-how to reimagine these games for a PS4 generation. To get more insight, we asked the developers behind several impressive remakes — including the eagerly awaited MediEvil and Resident Evil 2 — to provide an inside look at their development process. MediEvil It has been no easy task bringing Sir Dan back from the dead but Other Ocean Emeryville is always ready for a challenge. To keep this remake as true to the original as possible, our first step was to extract all the level geometry from the original game and then place it into the new engine to serve as our map for the placement of every tree, building, wall, etc. Once placed, we get a very strange version of Gallowmere that doesn’t quite feel like home just yet. To make Dan feel more at home, we then review each piece of low resolution PS1 art, compare it to the PS1 concept art we have, and then develop our own concepts to update the visuals, all while keeping an eye on matching the tone of the original game. Every piece of art, from tombstones to timepieces and everything in between, has been reinterpreted, reconcepted, and remade. Thanks, art team! Aside from the straightforward art updates, we also need to consider our draw distance is now no longer cut cut short from a black fog just feet away from Dan and our aspect ratio has shifted from a boxy 4:3 to a cinematic 16:9. This requires us to build out areas in the distance that didn’t even exist in the original game – so much more for one-eyed Dan to see! With all that extra space, we’ve had to fill in some gaps. In Enchanted Earth on PS1, for example, many of the trees you see are just bitmaps. We’ve created tons of trees and foliage to fill in those gaps and make this level really come to life. In doing so, we hope to create a greater sense of the world of Gallowmere and all its fabled creatures, critters and creepy locations! For Gallowmere! -Bobby Hopper, Associate Producer at Other Ocean Resident Evil 2 Resident Evil 2 has always been a series favorite for many and we heard our fans loud and clear when they voiced their desire to see it remade/reimagined on modern platforms. Big thanks to all the Resident Evil fans from around the world, as you really helped us show why this title had to be made. So we’ll be doing our best to give you an experience you’ll never forget – a completely reimagined Resident Evil 2 that takes the 1998 original to a new level. The title took a long time to produce for many reasons, because as you can imagine, popping open the hood and making any changes to someone’s favorite title can be tricky. The end result was that we wouldn’t just ‘remake’ it, but create an all new version of the game that embellishes further on the story, provides deeper gameplay, looks absolutely amazing and stays true to its terrifying survival horror roots. Since the PS1 original released in 1998, technology has evolved in a major way, but we’re also fortunate enough to have our own new game engine to take Resident Evil 2 to the next level. It’s being created on Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine which was also used for Resident Evil 7 biohazard, so players can look forward to terrifyingly photorealistic visuals, immersive sound via binaural recording technology, 4K resolution and HDR support on PlayStation 4 Pro, and much, much more. As for what’s been updated in the new game – simply said, we want Resident Evil 2 to be a fresh experience for both series veterans and newcomers alike. Certainly not an exhaustive list, but we’ve done things like adding the new over-the-shoulder perspective, changing up the puzzles, and modifying certain encounter moments. Because, let’s face it. If you already know there’s a Licker coming around the corner, that’s just no fun in a survival horror game, is it? We’re only a couple short months away from release so please look forward to Resident Evil 2, coming to PlayStation 4 on January 25, 2019! -Tsuyoshi Kanda, Producer, Capcom Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy When developing the levels, it was important to us that the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy stands up visually against other PS4 generation titles. To that end, we felt the standard remaster approach of raising texture resolutions with minor geometry adjustments would not be the right way to bring back such an iconic franchise. Our goal was to build each level from the ground up so it stays true to the original and looks like you imagined it in your mind. This means that the levels in the N. Sane Trilogy are a lot more lush, vibrant, and full of life but they still have the authentic gameplay experience fans remember. There have been so many technological advancements since the PS1-era, whether it be the raw power of game consoles now available to us, disk capacity, or improvements and advancements in game engines. Texture resolutions are now 60 to 100 times what they were on PS1, and because of the additional computing power available to us on modern consoles we can now also increase the draw distance for our environments, add dynamic lighting, and add more ambient life to the levels through VFX and animation. All of the levels in the N. Sane Trilogy are so beautifully rendered and brought to life, loading into N. Sanity Beach for the first time and watching the water break on the shoreline speaks for itself! We wanted to stay faithful to the inspiration of the originals, but we also didn’t want to shy away from making some improvements or additions to the game that we knew fans would love. One of the most obvious examples is the addition of Coco, a second re-playable character across all three games. We also knew Crash fans were extremely competitive, so we brought Time Trials and Online Leaderboards to all three games as well. We didn’t stop on release day though! Since our launch in 2017, we’ve added two bonus DLC levels Stormy Ascent and Future Tense, and have brought HDR support to the N. Sane Trilogy for PS4. Two of my favorite levels to showcase on a PS4 Pro with HDR-enabled would probably have to be N. Sanity Beach and Toad Village, they really make you feel like you’ve stepped into an animated film, it’s amazing! -Kyle Martin, Producer, Vicarious Visions Spyro Reignited Trilogy It was a passion project of ours to bring Spyro Reignited Trilogy to PS4. We wanted to give players a new way to experience this journey with Spyro on PS4, while staying true to the original magic and sense of wonder we all felt 20 years ago. When reimagining Spyro’s controls, our goal was to design them in a way that felt familiar, yet fresh and modern. We paid close attention to nailing details like how high he jumps or how fast he runs. There was a lot of art, math, and magic put into modernizing how the player interacts with Spyro, and how Spyro interacts with the world. Some things will obviously change in a remake, but the magic stays the same! Check out our blog for an inside look at how we brought Spyro Reignited Trilogy to life on PS4. -Jan Stec, Senior Technical Designer, Toys for Bob View the full article

Hey everyone, thank you all for your continued and tremendous support of Marvel’s Spider-Man since its September launch. Since then, we have launched two chapters of Marvel’s Spider-Man: The City That Never Sleeps, the game’s DLC, shining the spotlight on Black Cat, Hammerhead, and the Maggia. We’re thrilled to announce the series will wrap up on December 21 with the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Silver Lining. We loved having Silver Sable in Marvel’s Spider-Man, and we wanted to give players even more time with her. We have a brand-new teaser trailer here to give you a glimpse of the conclusion! Silver Sable has stormed back to reclaim her stolen Sable International tech. With New York Police Chief Yuri Watanabe on administrative leave following her exploits against Hammerhead, Spider-Man will have to rely on unlikely allies to keep Marvel’s New York safe. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Silver Lining features new missions, new and upgraded enemy and crime types, along with upgraded Hammerhead bases and storyline quests. There will also be new trophies, challenges, and three new suits for players to unlock. We’re also very excited to be partnering with Sony Pictures on the upcoming film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, in theaters December 14. We are offering a special promotion where users who pre-order the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film from PlayStation Store will receive a voucher for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Silver Lining*, a dynamic theme, and avatars as their pre-order incentive**. As you may have seen at the end of our teaser trailer, we have included Peter Parker’s suit from the movie into our third DLC chapter. Pre-orders for the movie officially start tomorrow and then you’ll be able to unlock and swing around in the film’s version of Peter Parker’s suit once Marvel’s Spider-Man: Silver Lining launches on December 21! It was a real pleasure working in partnership with Sony Pictures and Marvel to bring this suit to the game — and we can’t wait to see what you do in photo mode with it! You’ll also be able to unlock the Cyborg Spider-Man suit and the Aaron Aikman Spider-Armor. We also have new art from acclaimed Marvel artist and suit designer Adi Granov. With this, the whole triptych is now complete, with images for all three chapters. You can pre-order Marvel’s Spider-Man: Silver Lining for $9.99 USD MSRP on PlayStation Store. Of course, if you haven’t tried any of the post-launch content yet, you also can buy the Marvel’s Spider-Man: The City That Never Sleeps bundle of all three chapters for $24.99 USD MSRP and start playing the first two chapters now. Haven’t played Marvel’s Spider-Man yet? The Digital Deluxe Edition is an especially good value at $79.99 USD MSRP, as it includes the full game and all three chapters of Marvel’s Spider-Man: The City That Never Sleeps. Hi all! I’m Theo, designer and artist of the three-man Swedish studio SkyGoblin. As you can see in our shiny new launch trailer above, Hellfront: Honeymoon turned out to be pretty dang intense, and I’m here to tell you how it came to be what it is today. Imagine spending eight consecutive years developing slow-paced, laid-back narrative games and you might begin to understand all the pent-up urge for fast-paced, action-oriented gameplay our studio was feeling at the time when Hellfront was conceived. When we wrapped production of our previous title, The Journey Down, we immediately threw ourselves headfirst into development of Hellfront like a hungry pack of wolves. The game pretty much exploded out of our fingers! We’d become quite social gamers during our previous development cycle, hangin’ out with friends and playing local co-op and PvP games, but we all felt that there was something sorely missing from the local game scene. We wanted intensity in combat. We wanted button-mashing mayhem that engulfed the entire screen in explosions, like the good old days with Smash TV and similar titles that we’d play with our friends after school. We wanted a game for couches and pubs, a game that people were drawn into and could pick up and play without prior knowledge or any kind of intellectual investment. We’ve been running this studio for 13 crazy years full of ups and downs, but one thing this bumpy road has supplied us with (other than the hard earned scars of gamedev combat) is a strong sense of who does what. So once development of Hellfront started we all had our roles firmly figured out, so the concept took shape at the speed of light. We’d be blasting new features into the game in the morning, spend most of the day playing with them and then, in more cases than not, throw the new features out before the workday was through. With a firm belief that the core gameplay mechanic was holy and that if a new feature didn’t align with it 100%, it didn’t belong in the game, we ended up with an extremely tight game loop, worthy of basing an entire game on. And thus, Hellfront: Honeymoon, probably the world’s most intense twin-stick action strategy title ever conceived, was born. During the final phase of our previous production, we’d been listening to a lot of synthwave music to keep the work tempo high and brutal, so looking to synthwave as a type of soundtrack for the next game was an obvious choice. We reached out to the awesome synthwave artist Megadrive, and once we put his tracks in there, it was obvious that the adrenaline-fuelled mayhem of his music was a match made in heaven for Hellfront. Our original intention was to make a PvP game and just throw in the co-op and single player modes as a means of practicing, but it quickly turned out that playing co-op against the computer was a hell of a lot more fun than we expected. Also, when we added leaderboards, a whole new dimension was added to the game, and we found ourselves coming into the office every morning bragging about having beaten each other’s highscores. So, without the intention, we seem to have created an extremely fun speed-running game too! Hellfront: Honeymoon will be available at PlayStation Store on December 19, so make sure to save the date. See you at the Hellfront! View the full article

Greetings, fellow Hunters! Hot on the heels of yesterday’s announcement of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, we sat down with producer Ryozo Tsujimoto from Capcom to learn what’s new in Iceborne, including new threats, new locations, and more. Watch the video above to get first details, or read on if you’re more of the written-word type. Either way, enjoy the interview and start sharpening that Great Sword! Or Charge Blade. Or Insect Glaive. Or Hammer. Or… PlayStation.Blog: Monster Hunter World: Iceborne was just announced and is slated for Autumn 2019. What has been the team’s high-level goal when creating this new expansion? Ryozo Tsujimoto: The concept behind it is to provide a massive expansion to the world already established in the Monster Hunter: World base game, and give users an even broader and deeper experience. It features its own distinct story that takes place after that of the base game. It offers new gameplay elements which can be utilized in the base Monster Hunter: World game as well. There’s also lots more we’ll be able to share in the near future. There’s still plenty of time to prepare for this new content by playing Monster Hunter: World. And for those who haven’t yet played Monster Hunter: World, there is currently a limited Trial Version (running from December 11- 17) available for you to check out right now. You can carry over the save data from that Trial Version to the base game, so I hope you try the game. PSB: Did fan and community feedback influence any aspects of Iceborne’s development? RT: In creating this big expansion that we’re calling Iceborne, we’ve taken into account a lot of the feedback from the community. In addition to more content, we’re also adding lots of quality of life improvements to make the gameplay even more comfortable and enjoyable, so we think users are going to really enjoy what’s to come. Monster Hunter World Wallpapers | PlayStation.com PSB: How does the size of Iceborne compare to that of the Monster Hunter: World base game? What new content can you confirm at this stage of development? RT: We are introducing a new quest rank, and while the content in Iceborne isn’t quite as big as the already huge Monster Hunter: World game, the expansion is sizeable and is really going to build upon the existing world. Fans familiar with the concept of the expansions that we’ve done in the past should have some idea of the scope and that we’ll work to make it as voluminous as possible. I’m sure the fans must be wondering about what new monsters they might go up against in Iceborne. Of course, there will be some brand-new monsters you’ve never seen before making their first appearance. Also, if you look very closely at the trailer we’ve released, at the very end you might just get a hint at some of your old favorites returning this time around. The Monster Hunter World Appreciation Fest kicks off in January, celebrating one year since the game’s initial launch. PSB: On that note, how does the team create a new monster? Has that process evolved at all since the release of Monster Hunter: World? RT: When the team goes about creating a new monster, they look at it from a back-and-forth gameplay point of view — the sorts of actions that the monster will perform, or what the user needs to do to combat those actions. We start with that, but obviously as there are more and more monsters in the games, we need to get more creative in thinking about new monsters and new actions that haven’t existed in that combination before. That’s where the challenge exists. Each one has to stand on its own gameplay-wise, so we put a lot energy into that thought. PSB: We know that Iceborne is deep in production, but it’s not exactly right around the corner. Are there any other updates or enhancements coming to Monster Hunter: World to keep people playing? RT: In the run up to the release of Iceborne there is plenty for Monster Hunter: World players to look forward to. First of all, Arch Tempered Kulve Taroth is coming on December 20. You can try hunting the same way as before, or you can go deeper and experience its true power for even better rewards. We also have a special in-game festival in January 2019, called The Appreciation Fest, to celebrate the first anniversary of the console game’s launch. In addition to all of that, you’ve probably noticed our other teaser trailer for our collaboration with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which features Geralt arriving in the New World. The quest for this collaboration is really unique because it mixes Monster Hunter: World gameplay along with the RPG elements of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to create a really fresh experience we think is going to appeal to fans of both series. You’ll see that coming early in 2019. We couldn’t have done it, of course, without the close collaboration of CD Projekt Red. We’re still working with them right now on the content and I think you’re really going to enjoy it. Finally, in the spring of 2019 you will see Nergigante, one of the monsters that holds a key role in the Monster Hunter: World storyline, returning as an Arch Tempered monster. That quest is going to mark the end of the new event quests for the base game. After that, up until the launch of the Iceborne content, we will be re-releasing previous quests for you to catch up. You’re going to want to play the base game in the run up to Iceborne, so that you’re ready. PSB: Is there anything else you’d like to add for the Monster Hunter fans reading this story? RT: To all you Hunters out there, please allow me to thank you so much for playing Monster Hunter: World. We really appreciate the support. I’ll be able to tell you more about Iceborne as development continues and I should be able to share some great things in the spring timeframe. Until then, if anyone out there has not yet experienced Monster Hunter: World, but you think this seems like an interesting game, I encourage you to check out the limited free Trial Version that’s running until December 17. As a reminder, you can carry over your save data into the full game, so give it a shot! That’s all from me for now, but thanks for all your continued support of Monster Hunter: World and Iceborne and until next time, happy hunting! View the full article
