  4. Hey PlayStation fans — greetings from Telltale! The second season of Minecraft: Story Mode — which we’re once again creating in collaboration with our partners at Mojang — is coming to PS4 on July 11, so we sat down with three of the project’s lead developers to gain some behind-the-scenes insights into the references, easter eggs, and teases hidden in the new trailer. Watch the trailer above, then dive into the full breakdown below… Gone But Not Forgotten – You may have noticed we have a new animal friend (frenemy?) in Minecraft: Story Mode – Season Two: Lluna the llama. “When we heard that Mojang was adding llamas, that was it,†says Lead Designer Brian Freyermuth. “It was perfect. An animal that could be cute and nasty, all at the same time.†After Reuben the pig’s…er, incident in the first season, however, the team took the introduction of a new animal companion very seriously. “We were unsure if it was too soon or not, and we didn’t want it to feel like we were just replacing Reuben,†says Season Director Jonathan Stauder. As part of their effort to ease the transition, the team created a memorial in town and included an optional pig pageant. You can see some of these pageant-worthy pigs in the trailer. Glitches?! – That big Sea Temple you see uses some custom textures not actually found in Minecraft proper because it was built by season two’s larger-than-life villain: the Admin. “We worked with Mojang to pull stuff from old versions of Minecraft [including] glitches and exploits that people used while building, like glowing obsidian and floating water,†says Lead Writer Eric Stirpe. You may notice some re-skinned creatures in there as well. A New Adventuring Duo – Adventuring and business partners Jack and Nurm have been a hit internally, so it’s nice to see them in action in the trailer here. Nurm answers the question “What role would a villager play in Story Mode?†but where did Jack come from exactly? “Jack is our version of Kurt Russell,†says Stirpe, “and Jack and Nurm are our very own Han and Chewie.†Freyermuth elaborates, “I’m a huge fan of Big Trouble in Little China, so the thought of a character like Jack Burton in Minecraft was amazing.†Your World is Expanding – In Jack and Nurm’s adventure emporium, there’s a particular square of the world map that’s conspicuously missing. So what’s the secret behind that mysterious square? We tried to get Eric Stirpe to give us some spoilers, but all he would say is this: “We explored the Order of the Stone in the first season, and now we’re going back even further into the foundational secrets of our world.†Ominous. Beacontown Easter Eggs – Jesse’s home base, Beacontown, is jam-packed with easter eggs and references to later plotlines, including a very special easter egg that’s just off-screen during the Beacontown shot in the trailer. “There are two cat houses in Beacontown that our Art Director, Mark Hamer, made with his daughter and directly imported into the town,†says Stirpe. Freyermuth adds, “The Beacontown area is something I’m particularly proud of. I bet most players are going to see different things every time they play through it. Keep a look out for a certain familiar building from all the way back in episode one of season one.†Hidden Parrots – You might notice a lot of parrots flying around throughout season two of Minecraft: Story Mode. Jonathan Stauder loved putting bats into the first season and made it his personal mission to include at least one parrot in the second. Once our dev team learned of his mission, they decided start adding a few… extra parrots. Like, a lot of extra parrots. See how many you can spot in the trailer alone (hint: check the rafters in Jack and Nurm’s shop)! YouTubers IRL (Sorta) – In case you didn’t hear when we first announced season two, Minecraft YouTubers Stampy Cat and stacyplays have returned! You can spot them in Beacontown in the trailer alongside their very own custom houses. “We had a great collaborative process with Stampy and Stacy in making their houses,†says Stirpe. “We asked them to write a paragraph about their building trademarks, then our art team made mock-ups for them, and we all got to work on the designs together.†New Outfits for the Gang – It’s been a few years since the events of the first season, so when we see the Order of the Stone again, they have some updated outfits. “Petra’s old armor has been starting to basically break down, so she’s cobbled together different pieces here and there,†Freyermuth comments. “I love Petra’s new armor because you get to see this really cool combination that reflects both her mercenary ways in the first episode of season one and the iconic Order armor we gave her later on.†View the full article

  6. We were so excited to be able to announce the upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn expansion, The Frozen Wilds, at E3 last month. As we were wrapping Horizon Zero Dawn, we had a lot of ideas for new characters, quests, and places for Aloy to discover, so we started to develop The Frozen Wilds. We can’t wait for you to experience the dangerous frigid lands to the north! While we’re hard at work on The Frozen Wilds, we have also been working on something else… As of today, you can download patch 1.30 which includes additional fixes to progression issues which some of you may have encountered. However, it also includes the highly anticipated New Game+ option. With New Game+ you will be able to relive the adventures of Aloy without losing your character progression and your collected inventory. You won’t be able to progress beyond the level cap of 50, but you can still collect XP during your adventure. We have also added updated versions of existing weapons and outfits with an extra modification slot at your disposal. These will not come cheap and will set you back some extra shards. Horizon Zero Dawn | PlayStation.com Before embarking on a new quest you can manually adjust the difficulty level to your liking. For players who seek an extra challenge, we are also introducing an ‘Ultra Hard’ difficulty. This new setting will enhance machine senses and behavior and other additional smaller tweaks. Players who decide to embark on the Ultra Hard path will not have the option to switch it to a less difficult setting when choosing New Game+. People choosing to play normal game will still have the ability to change back to an easier difficulty. New Game+ also comes with two new Trophies and extra unlockable content that gives players the ability to add facepaint or change Aloy’s Focus. Keep an eye on our Twitter or Facebook to stay up to date on new information on Horizon Zero Dawn. View the full article
  7. Housemarque’s recent Nex Machina was notable not just because it was yet another fantastic arcade shooter from the studio, but also the game’s development was in collaboration with legendary game developer Eugene Jarvis. Jarvis birthed the top-down shooter genre with seminal ’80s classic Robotron: 2084 and perfected it in his glorious ’90s sci-fi co-op shooter Smash TV. With Nex Machina being as much a spiritual successor to those as it is to Housemarque’s other works, such as PS4 launch title Resogun, we decided it fine time to sit down with the man himself and find out his own personal favorite games. 1. The first game you remember playing…“Pong. We played Pong a lot with my sister and I think she was even better at it. But, Spacewar was the first one I remember seeing at Stanford. It took money and ran on a refrigerator sized terminal. It was a predecessor to Asteroids in a way, but it was player vs. player. Similar to Pong in that way, but Spacewar was really complicated in comparison. “Really all the first games were PvP, as it was very difficult to code a good computer opponent, so playing against another person was much more viable. It’s funny how this still holds somewhat true even these days with games like Street Fighter or even arena shooters like Overwatch.†2. The game made you want to become a developer…“Space Invaders. I used to actually make pinball games before that, but seeing Space Invaders opened up the possibilities of what video games could be. Before that they were just novel entertainment with very little depth. A small, 10 minute spike of fun. “Space Invaders had a huge impact with its alien enemies and artificial A.I. It was the first time I really noticed the potential of the ‘man vs. machine’ setup, which later had huge success with Pac-Man, Asteroids and others. “Pinball, in essence, was a very strict PvE setup where you always had the same elements of bumpers, lights, sounds and the metal balls. That was a lot of fun, but you could only do different themes and effects, so it was a bit confined. “Space Invaders was the first time I really noticed a new audio visual world that really had no restrictions. The aggressive movement of the invaders hunting you down made your heart beat faster. It was a real interactive experience. As long as your imagination and the tech allowed it, the sky was the limit. After that, pinball seems a bit limited and video games really had a hold on me.†3. The game you wish you had made…“Well, that’s a good question. Hindsight is 20/20. For example, why didn’t I make Candy Crush? As a developer you are trying to occupy the mindset of the people out there, so you always try to create something that is on the nerve of the human condition. “As far as huge mega budget games go, I really don’t wish I made those, because they are really a product of masses of ideas coming together to form something huge and great. Those are not really a product of the author, but rather a hundred lifetimes of work. “The type of game I wish I made are the simple things where I think like I could have done that in, like, two nights. Like Tetris, it could have been done in the early ’70s, just a very classic simple formula. Brilliant concept and brilliant execution. The kind of title you hope your brain could come up with, before someone else does. “Also something like Candy Crush which is an age old formula, but it’s executed perfectly for the modern audience.†4. The game that made you rethink the medium…“That would be Candy Crush, not just because of the mobile revolution side, because there was Angry Birds and other great ones. Candy Crush is just a match-three game, and that formula was already made well in Bejeweled. Taking that to the next level really makes you think human emotions and how to work out the basics of gaming. I admit that, yes, it does have all these pay-to-play and paywall-type elements, but it almost makes the achievement more valuable to the player. As you play on you become more engaged with the title and, come level 1000 or so, you are really in deep. “This is, in a way, close to what we did back in the day with arcade cabinets, where you could spend $1,000 becoming the best Robotron player. Skill and endurance were the key elements there – that and your wallet. With Candy Crush it’s your wallet and patience. But yeah, that really made me rethink the way games are played and that things are really changing. “In a classic skill game your skill allows you to only to get so far. With this new approach you could go much further even if your skill didn’t let you. That’s somewhat similar to what we did with Smash TV; a lot of the games of late ’80s you could buy ‘Continues’. So more people could see the ending if they paid more. “It changed the system. Now bad players could go all the way to the game’s end. Funnily, this also made a lot more money as it turns out there are a lot more bad players than good players, so it was a win-win in that sense! It made us question what a game was. Was it skill based? Or is it an experience you pay for, like a joy ride. It was wonderful to see that then and still see this value proposition take shape. “Even when Everquest came out, people were gold-mining assets and selling them online. Others were buying them and, in a sense, cheating their way to the top, but that really broadens the sense of what a game is. Others want to be on top easily and others want to grind. It’s a wide spectrum and to many it is also an obsession or a compulsive disorder, but in the end they are still playing the same game.†5. The last game you saw the end credits for…“Hate to admit it, but it’s likely Smash TV. “A funny thing with that was that we wanted something that meant if you beat the game we’d still want to you to come back. So during development we came up with the concept of ‘pleasure domes’ – magical places only accessible if you met certain conditions. We never implemented them, but that didn’t stop the rumour that started circulating the arcade halls as people speculated as to how to get to there. “It became an urban legend, even though they never existed in the game. People would go on to bulletin boards and claim that they had found them. So our stupid lie turned into the perfect end game that people always tried to reach. “It was very similar to the ‘Polybius’ cult, people that kept saying that they’ve played it. Another one called ‘Oops’ was a vector monitor game, a prototype where you played an egg trying to protect itself from insemination. It was a one off game in just one location in Stanford, but now it’s just a legend that seems to have disappeared.†6. Your favorite multiplayer game…“I love Spacewar and that was player vs player. It was developed at MIT in 1960 and it had gravity, and a sun that you could crash into. A very rich gameplay experience with a lot of different moves like the hyperspace that would transport you out of the way of shots. It also had ship damage that actually cripple your abilities while playing. Making you just a nose cone that could shoot, but had no movement control. The first video game in many ways. “The graphics were surprisingly silky smooth with their vector graphics of that time – it was a very smooth video experience. Really close to modern 4K in a lot of ways. Just in black and white of course.†View the full article

  9. The team at Vicarious Visions are so excited that the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is finally out! And what a fun ride it has been so far. For this article, we thought it would be fun to focus on the bosses of the N. Sane Trilogy. We know that these baddies are fan-favorites, and we wanted to share our developers’ commentary about working on the characters and delving into their battles. Kara Massie, Producer at Vicarious Visions: What is the favorite Crash Bandicoot boss that you worked on? Paulo Dionisio, Lead Boss Designer: The Crash Bandicoot Cortex boss fight, because of the layer of the Aka Aku v Uka Uka battle on top of the Cortex battle, and the three stages of their fight. This makes each phase feel different even though the base mechanic is the same. And in later phases the auto-aim gets turned off, all of which makes this battle feel fun and varied. Danny Williams, Character Modeler: Papu Papu. Our rendering engine allowed for enhanced butt technology! James Weir, Character Modeler: Cortex, of course. He’s iconic and has such fun shapes to work with. Cory Turner, Character Modeler: Tiny Tiger. He has crazy proportions (don’t skip leg day!) and an insane amount of fur. He’s very fluffy. KM: Which updates did you make that you are happiest with? Chad Hamlet, Character Modeler: N. Gin’s mechs. I added an actual cockpit so now N.Gin is actually doing things during the fight. And there are tons of details added, like whirling turbines, missile pods, and other things allowing for secondary animations. JW: It was especially fun and challenging to work with the animators on Cortex in order to deliver what they needed to give him great facial animations. The originals mostly featured him all-teeth and snarling due to technical constraints of the time, but now we can really dial into a bigger range of performance. PD: The Tiny Tiger fight in Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped. There are a lot of lovely small moments and details added to this fight, because it was clear that Naughty Dog would have done it if they were remaking these with today’s tech. Like when Tiny grabs the trident, we made it more physical as if it really was being grabbed. The audience has reactions to the fight, for example. Note how they do the wave when the lions come out; and when Tiny gets defeated, they throw tomatoes. You can take your frustrations out on Tiny at the end of the fight as well, that’s new! There’s also a little Easter egg for those fans that know about the sneaky exploit from the original. Also, listen closely to the lions when you jump on them. KM: Which boss fight is the hardest to beat? PD: The original third game’s Cortex boss battle. I mean, this is the last fight so that’s to be expected. But there are a lot of layers of gameplay and during each phase, they change. Interestingly, the fight is hardest at the middle, but the tension doesn’t decrease. KM: What makes Crash Bandicoot boss fights interesting? PD: They don’t necessarily have any conceptual or mechanical tie back to the levels just been playing. Which makes them feel like a nice break, and you can see that Naughty Dog really wanted to make them feel cinematic. KM: What sources of inspiration did you draw upon for creating the boss models? DW, JW, CT, CH: For one, the original designs. And with these, it was trying to understand if shapes and angles were due to limitation in polygon counts, or were intentional. We looked at the original concept art to try to get an idea of the intentions. Promotional renders were also a source of inspiration. You play and watch the battles as well. I mean, how else do you know what you need for details, range of motion, what needs to destruct or spin or whatever. We also watched animated feature films for inspiration and to look at some archetypes, especially for facial studies. We studied other remasters/remakes, particularly ones where there was a long(ish) break between the games. We really tried to understand that point at which you’ve gone too far from refining to re-inventing. We also reviewed each other’s work, as a team, because we learn a lot from each other. You’re having a party at your house. Which Crash boss do you invite over? JW: Dr. N. Brio, because he could mix up some tasty beverages. CT: …and Dingodile because he’ll bring his own BBQ. CH: Dr. N. Tropy seems like a snob. He’d bring good food, I bet. PD: Dr. Neo Cortex, because I bet he has a lot of crazy stories to tell. Which boss is most like you? DW: Papu Papu, because we share the same silhouette. JW: Koala Kong, and ditto. The original Crash Bandicoot games came out in the mid-to-late 90s, what were you doing back then? PD: I was in high school studying hard. I wanted to be either an aerospace engineer or a video game designer. JW: High School! I moved around a lot, but I always drew and I always knew I wanted to get into games. I was taking a side class in AutoCAD and teaching myself 3ds Max. CH: I was in art school studying how to be a comic book artist. I had a mohawk, and I was a manager at a Taco Bell. CT: I was in middle school when the original Crash Bandicoot games came out. My best friend had a PlayStation so we’d hang at his house and play it. I was into drawing mascot characters, even back then. DW: In ’96 I was in college trying to learn how to do this stuff. In ’97, I dropped out to work at an animation studio, to learn how to do this stuff. And from ’98 until now, I’m still trying to learn how to do this stuff! KM: Who would you like to give some shoutouts to? DW: Big props to our riggers for being open-minded and willing to experiment with the rigging tools. This was so key to help us nail the cartoony silhouettes. They worked really hard on getting the facial and eye rigs to work for what we all needed. And also our rendering engineer, Ace! JW: Bless Ace! We gave him such a hard time in order to get the fur working right. Each time we’d ask for a new feature he’d nonchalantly say, ‘Hmm…’ and come back the next day with it working. CH: The fan reaction to the boss video was cool. CW: Yeh, I love it when they notice all the little things. Like the fact that Tiny has tighty whities! The Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is now available on PlayStation 4 as a physical disc or a digital download, and we can’t wait for you to experience it! We hope you have as much fun playing it as we did working on it. Thank you for being such a huge part of what we do, and let us know what you think about the game! View the full article
  10. Hi, PlayStation fans! I am Roman from Painted Black Games, a small indie developer, based in the city of Dnipro, Ukraine. The team is working hard on our debut game, a psychological thriller adventure – The Long Reach. All of us at Painted Black Games are super-excited because we’ve nearly reached the end of the game’s development cycle and the fun part of showing it off will begin soon – we really want to know what you all think of it. The whole team at Painted Black are big fans of the adventure games. The Long Reach honours the genre by mixing classic adventure gameplay, an intricate story, a gorgeous pixel art style and one little feature which I’m about to present to you. The game’s story takes place in the fictional American town of Baervox. More precisely, at a scientific research institute where a revolutionary accelerated knowledge transferring system is being developed. If you hadn’t already guessed it, something has gone horribly wrong. The technology the scientists have been working on has cataclysmically malfunctioned and both the institute and the town have been effected — and not in a good way! The surrounding area has been turned into a real nightmare and the experiment participants have transmuted into… well, we cannot tell you that for now, because we hate spoilers! The main character, Stewart, is a junior researcher at the scientific research institute. Stewart’s just a regular guy who, under your control, will have to untangle this rapidly escalating situation. Stewart will need to show courage and intelligence to save the world and, most importantly, survive. The Long Reach includes everything adventure fans expect – lots of dialogue, tricky puzzles, collecting and manipulating items. But, that is not all… We have attempted to create an immersive experience players can get caught up in. It’s hard to believe now, but The Long Reach was originally conceived as a mobile game! We had to remodel the control system three times! We started with a touchscreen model, then we moved to the tried-and-tested mouse and keyboard point-n-click system. Finally, we honed the controls to use a pad and we’re ready to deliver The Long Reach on PlayStation 4. As huge fans of the adventure genre there were several titles that inspired us to create The Long Reach. Lone Survivor, The Last Door, The Cave and The Silent Age all had their part to play. Making a good, intricate game for adventure fans was always at the forefront of our endeavours and we hope you have as much fun playing as we have had creating the The Long Reach. Thanks for your attention and have a nice day! View the full article

  12. With Spider-Man Homecoming swinging into theaters next month, I got a few minutes to chat with director Jon Watts about his take on Spidey, integrating with the larger Marvel cinematic universe, and what the success of films like Logan and Deadpool mean for comic adaptations. Also, visit PlayStation Store on your PS4 today to watch four new minutes of Spider-Man Homecoming ahead of the film’s launch on July 7 in North America. PSB: Do you consider Homecoming to be a Spider-Man origin story? Jon Watts: Yes, I do. It’s not the same moments of the origin story that we’ve seen before in other movies: we don’t see Uncle Ben die, we don’t see a spider bite. But I think this is the beginning of Spider-Man, in a way. He’s still learning how to be a superhero. In a way, it is an origin story — just not one we’ve seen before. PSB: Is there relevance to the title “Homecoming†for the story and character? JW: Well, there’s a superficial meaning because there’s a homecoming dance in the movie. But it’s nice that it also represents a homecoming into the Marvel universe. Spider-Man was created to give a different perspective into this huge world of superheroes. So now that he’s finally in the Marvel universe, I think it’s his homecoming. PSB: How do you see Homecoming differentiating itself from Sam Raimi’s films and the “Amazing†movies? JW: The biggest thing, really, is that he’s no longer alone in the universe. The fact that he’s a kid superhero in the world of the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy opens up a whole new world of possibilities in terms of stories you can tell. That, coupled with the fact that Tom Holland can play a believable high school sophomore, gives it a completely different feeling than anything we’ve seen before. PSB: What do you think is the most important thing to get right when portraying Spider-Man? What’s at the core of his character? JW: It just has to be very clear that Spider-Man is a regular kid. He has to be dealing with the same kinds of problems that a regular kid is dealing with. We also have to know that Peter is smart, and learn about his home life. But ultimately, that’s what makes Spider-Man, Spider-Man: he’s just like you and me. PSB: Vulture has been rumored to star in several Spider-Man movies over the years, but he never quite made the cut. What circumstances led to him being in Homecoming? JW: I was attracted to the idea because, for one, he’s one of the very first supervillains in Spider-Man’s world. And two, because it really opens up the possibilities of some very cool action sequences. A guy in a wingsuit fighting Spider-Man? [laughs] That was very attractive to me. PSB: How will Tony Stark interact with Peter Parker? JW: Well, it was set up really nicely for me, from Captain America: Civil War. Tony Stark has plucked Spider-Man out of obscurity, taken him on this crazy adventure to Germany taking on Captain America, and now dropped him back in Queens. What’s fun for me is, now Peter Parker thinks he is basically an honorary Avenger. But…that’s not necessarily the case. So to place him as a kid on the outside looking in, dreaming of being something bigger and finding his place in the universe, is how we’re integrating Spider-Man into this bigger world. PSB: Will Tony Stark be the mentor, coaching Peter along? JW: [laughs] I think of Tony Stark as being a reluctant mentor. I don’t know that he necessarily thought this through completely, when he chose this kid to help him out. I don’t know that he realized that this this kid, who is in so many ways much more powerful than him, would suddenly be looking to him for advice. Because Tony Stark isn’t necessarily the best person in the world to be your mentor. [laughs] To me, I think there’s a lot of nuance to that mentor relationship, on both sides. PSB: Sony’s original Spider-Man (2002) was in many ways the first modern superhero film. What’s changed since then, and how did it affect your vision for Homecoming? JW: The biggest thing now is that these superheroes exist in a shared world, so you can see them interact with each other. But Raimi’s first film is incredible; when you watch it again now, you realize it’s timeless. They came up with such a fun balance of action, drama, and comedy — it kind of planted the seed that Iron Man then took and ran with. And that began the creation of the Marvel cinematic universe, which Homecoming is now a part of. [Raimi’s original film] still stands up in a lot of ways. PSB: One of the best movies I’ve seen recently was Logan, which despite being an R-rated comics film, was a huge critical and commercial success… JW: Yeah. That’s so cool that you can do that now. Make a violent, R-rated Western about Wolverine. And have it be a hit — so exciting. PSB: Yeah. And Deadpool now, too. Do these more mature films hint at new possibilities for adapting comics and graphic novels? JW: Yeah. I don’t think people now think of comic-book movies as being a genre. I think audiences have become more comfortable with something that may have originated as a comic-book character — and not having it be a poppy, vibrant story. People who read lots of comics aren’t surprised by this, but not everybody has grown up reading them. So for the moviegoing public to be much more comfortable with these stories is great, because it opens the doors to a much bigger world of storytelling. PSB: I tend to think of comics as one of the most authentic storytelling mediums… JW: Yeah. That was something I could always lean on in creating Spider-Man Homecoming. There are so many years of Spider-Man comics to draw on, so many stories explored in those pages, that for me the possibilities are limitless. PSB: Preparing for this interview, I had some friends tell me to ask whether “character X or Y†would make a cameo in the film. But let’s save that for the movie. Where’s the sweet spot, in your opinion, between telling a great story, and going into so-called “fan service JW: It has to work if you haven’t seen any of the other movies. It has to stand on its own. All that other stuff has to be bonus. I always think, if my mom watches this movie, and I don’t think she’s seen any Marvel movies, would she understand what’s going on? Would she still be engaged dramatically in the story? PSB: As for Spidey’s suit itself — how many iterations of the suit did you guys go through before settling on what appeared in Civil War? JW: I don’t know how many versions they went through — I wasn’t really on board until Tom Holland was hired. But, hundreds and hundreds, I assume. There are so many combinations, different variations of the webbing pattern, the way the suit flexes. There are so many things to take into consideration. Fortunately, Marvel has this amazing visual development department and that’s basically their only job — taking comics characters and bring them to life in a real-world environment. PSB: Speaking of that, what’s the collaboration with Marvel like? I’m assuming it’s close. Did they provide you with a list of dos and do-nots? JW: We work really closely. At the beginning, I was really clear about my vision for the movie and making sure nobody would be surprised along the way. I’ve never been in this situation before so I can only speak for myself, but you go into a big job like this assuming that somebody at some point is going to say, “no, you can’t do that.†Amazingly, that never happened. I was able to take these key ideas I had set up early on, and run with them. PSB: Was there nowhere you maybe had a polite discussion about the best way to proceed…? JW: It’s always a collaborative process. What’s nice is that you’re working with a group who are basically the biggest fans in the world. [laughs] If anything, it feels like this amazing resource you can drawn on. When you’re brainstorming [different options], and being able to ask them what they think. It’s a great group of people to work with. PSB: As a filmmaker, any films or film trends out there you’re excited about? JW: [laughs] Can I tell you, I have no idea what’s going on in the larger world of filmmaking. I haven’t seen anything. I’m looking forward to taking a few weeks off when this film comes out, and catching up on the world. PlayStation.Blog: You playing any games? Jon Watts: I’m so behind right now. That game Everything. That one’s great. I love it when a game changes your expectations about what a game can be. I love that game. View the full article
  13. With the chaos of E3 behind us, it’s time to tally the votes and declare the winners of the show, as voted by you! As a reminder, the three categories you voted in were “Best Trailer,†“Most Anticipated PS4 Game,†and “Most Anticipated PS VR Game.†Competition was fierce in all three fields, but each saw a clear winner… and one game in particular won the day in two of the three available categories. Without further ado… the winners! Best Trailer God of War The God of War returns! It’s been a year since we first got a glimpse of Kratos’ newly bearded visage, and at this year’s Showcase we finally got a better idea of how exactly this story will play out as the team at Santa Monica Studio drops the iconic warrior into a new mythology. Marvel’s Spider-Man Monster Hunter: World Days Gone Most Anticipated PS4 Game God of War Well, I can’t say I’m too surprised here. As it turns out, the final vote tallies for “Best Trailer†and “Most Anticipated PS4 Game†ended up being awfully similar! If there’s one thing we can say about you, our readers, it’s that you’re consistent. Marvel’s Spider-Man Monster Hunter: World Days Gone Most Anticipated PS VR Game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR The opportunity to explore Tamriel inside PlayStation VR is alluring indeed — so much so that this was the biggest landslide of all three polls we ran here. Skyrim VR very nearly pulled in as many votes as all three runners-up combined. Superhot VR Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV The Inpatient Editor’s Choice I hope you were able to tune in to PlayStation Live From E3 2017 while we were all in Los Angeles! If not, you missed out on some enlightening developer interviews and live gameplay sessions (including an incredibly tense Detroit demo driven by yours truly). As we wrapped up the festivites, each of the hosts on the show took a moment to nominate a single game as their “Editor’s Choice†pick for E3 2017. Here’s what we picked. Detroit: Become Human Chosen by: Sid Shuman Days Gone Chosen by: Meredith Molinari Monster Hunter: World Chosen by: Malik Forte Dissidia Final Fantasy NT Chosen by: Ryan Clements Marvel’s Spider-Man Chosen by: Justin Massongill God of War Chosen by: Zac Minor Bonus! 15. Hello from Zen Studios! We’ve got some very big news! I am so excited to announce that Pinball FX3 will be releasing on PlayStation 4 this summer. Zen Pinball has been serving the PlayStation community since the very early days of PSN in May of 2009 (8 years?!?!), and the time has come to go next-level and take a major step forward in the evolution of pinball. Pinball FX3 will now be the Zen-supported pinball platform on PSN – replacing Zen Pinball 2 which is currently available on PS4. Pinball FX3 is a massive game packed full of new features designed to turn pinball into a true community experience on PS4. Built around multiplayer-matchups, user-generated tournaments and league play, Pinball FX3 is now so much more than just leaderboard rankings – the game elevates the competitive pinball spirit that has thrived since the early days of pinball more than a century ago. We have thought about you along the development process and have designed deep single-player modes that will help you become a better pinball player! Now, to answer the question burning in all of your minds: can you take your Zen Pinball 2 tables to Pinball FX3? Yes, you can! Zen Studios is 100% committed to keeping the community intact and providing you with one of the best values in gaming. We will have new day-one content based on some amazing properties from a brand new partner! Thank you all for many, many years of support. The game keeps going because you keep playing and supporting us. Pinball FX3 is a new beginning and we look forward to awesome days ahead! View the full article
  16. Greetings, War Mages. Harmonia here, Community Manager at Robot Entertainment. I have some very exciting news to share: Orcs Must Die Unchained is coming to PS4 on July 18! Finally your orc-smashing, ogre-crushing, and kobold-crunching dreams can become a reality from the comfort of your couch! After a fantastic showing at last year’s PlayStation Experience, we wrapped up our open beta and launched Orcs Must Die Unchained for PC in April. Now we are thrilled to announce that the game will be arriving on PS4 with new content, game modes, and regular updates. All this for the low, low price of… nothing. That’s right! Orcs Must Die Unchained is free to play. For those who are unfamiliar with Orcs Must Die Unchained, it takes the award-winning Orcs Must Die action tower defense gameplay to a whole new level with three-player team-based gameplay. Slay the invading hordes to protect your Rift, but don’t get cocky because the stakes are higher, the traps are bloodier, and the invaders are even more ravenous. You’ll need to bring your A-game and a couple of the biggest orc-haters you can find to fight off these hordes! Set in the familiar world of its hilarious predecessors, Unchained introduces a pantheon of powerful new heroes, deadly traps, dynamic maps, and a variety of gameplay modes for players to hack, grind, flatten, gibletize, incinerate, and fling orcs in defense of the Rift. Defeat the invading armies to collect and upgrade traps, traits, and other powerful items. You’ll go from apprentice to rift lord in no time! Survival mode lets players slay their way to the top of the orc pile in 3-player co-op defense gameplay. Sabotage mode puts two teams of three head-to-head; troll the opposing team with powerful spells designed to weaken their defenses and summon enemies to overrun them — but be on guard as they’ll be doing the same. Weekly Challenges give players the chance to conquer challenging, inventive scenarios. Endless mode will keep the orcs, ogres, and other uglies comin’ until you break. In celebration of the release, PlayStation Plus players who install Unchained can jump-start their orc-smashing careers with an exclusive package of in-game currency, skins, consumables, and more. Valued at more than $20, this bundle is free for Plus members until August 17! See you at the rift on July 18! View the full article

  18. Today, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is out on PS4 as a standalone game. Remastered in true high-definition, it features enhanced textures, rendering, lighting, and much more to bring the experience of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to a new generation of fans. You can pick up the game as a physical disc or as a digital download for $39.99 ($49.99 CAD). Also starting today –and continuing for a limited time — the Modern Warfare Remastered Variety Map Pack is available on PlayStation Store for $9.99 ($19.99 CAD), adding four new maps to Modern Warfare Remastered along with ten Rare Operation Lion Strike Supply Drops for your inventory. Activision is also launching Call of Duty Days of Summer today where you can earn a free Days of Summer Supply Drop each week through August 1 at 10:00 AM Pacific by logging into the game each Monday by 11:59 PM Pacific. Make sure to log in each week or you’ll miss out. These drops will contain more than 40 Days of Summer items like Weapon Kits, Melee Weapons, Emblems, Camos, Reticles, Calling Cards, and Uniforms. Plus, you can earn a special Sun-soaked Graves character if you complete all of the Days of Summer Collections in Modern Warfare Remastered. In addition to the loot, the Bog map has received a complete summer makeover. The dumpster fires and night setting have been replaced with a beachside hangout filled with sand castles, colorful seaside graffiti, a surfboard shop, café, and more. There are also four different Days of Summer weapon camos for you to unlock on Beach Bog through challenges, and make sure you complete them before August 1 at 10:00 AM Pacific, because they’ll be packed up when Days of Summer comes to a close. But that’s not all. There’s a special Beachcomber edition of Prop for Days of Summer, so in addition to all the props you know and love, beach-themed props like beach balls, sand castles, surfboards, and more will be added to the mix for your hide and seek skills. Days of Summer is also available starting today in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, complete with new weapons and new camos. To help build your collection, log into Infinite Warfare every Monday for a free Supply Drop, and every Wednesday and Friday for a free item from the Days of Summer collection. Plus, look for new Days of Summer items in the Summer Hack every week until August 1. To top it off, Infinity Ward is adding characters from Infinite Warfare’s Campaign to the Multiplayer as well as characters from across the Call of Duty franchise. You’ll be able to play the Warfighter Rig as Omar, the Merc as Reyes, Synaptic as ETH.3N, FTL as Salter, Stryker as Price, and Phantom as Ghost. Additionally, players who jump into Infinite Warfare between today and August 1 at 10:00 AM Pacific can play on the Turista map from the Continuum DLC Map Pack for free, giving them a taste of how the rich and famous enjoy beach vacations in the future. You can also celebrate Days of Summer in Call of Duty: Black Ops III starting at 10:00 AM Pacific on July 11 through August 1. Players will have a chance to earn a limited Pack-a-Punch camo, and will also be able to play all four of the maps from the Awakening DLC for free, including the Summer-tastic water park of doom, Splash. And if you happen to own Awakening already, Treyarch will give you Double XP during Days of Summer from July 11 until August 1. Call of Duty Days of Summer has a lot more in store as well, because across all three games you’ll find special playlists, challenges, and events to power up your Days of Summer experience, starting today. Don’t forget the sunscreen! View the full article
  19. Hey all, Trevor from Vertigo Games here. The last few weeks have been super exciting and hard work for us, but we’re thrilled that Arizona Sunshine will finally make its PlayStation VR debut tomorrow! To thank you all for your amazing support, we’re celebrating the North American launch with a limited Arizona Sunshine Launch Edition which includes both the game and an exclusive Arizona Sunshine PS4 theme at 10% off for everyone who joins the VR zombie apocalypse during our launch week! One of the things I’m really excited about is how far we’ve taken support for the PS VR Aim controller over the past couple of months. While it was already pretty awesome to play the game with it to begin with, we felt the game lacked proper support for it. The solution? We created an entire, additional campaign mode in which you need to survive with 13 newly added two-handed weapons at your disposal. Arizona Sunshine is all about VR shooting, so it has been our top priority to get this absolutely right. Up until even last week we have been tweaking gun configurations to make it feel really intuitive. The two-handed guns have received multiple passes on realism and control comfort (Honestly, I could dedicate a whole post to this alone!). What we found is that there is no golden rule in the way VR games should be played — everyone is different. That’s why we made sure you’re going to be armed with a bunch of settings that will enable you to tweak the VR controls to your liking. Go with your controller of choice, choose between teleporting or walking locomotion and smooth or segmented rotation, adjust controller-gun offsets, and use the left-handed setting if you are a lefty! Lastly, I can share some good news for all the PS4 Pro players out there. You can expect Arizona Sunshine to look its very best on your console, as we’ve visually enhanced the game to take full advantage of its power. We’ve adjusted the graphic settings dynamically for each area to maintain a high frame rate while pushing the game’s visual quality to its limit. Think of anti-aliasing, render-scale, fog density, and draw distance. Don’t expect any gameplay changes though, because that wouldn’t be fair to non-PS4 Pro players when you’re all playing together in one of the game’s multiplayer modes. I truly hope you will enjoy the game as much as we do! Now I’m finally off to my cave to get some sleep… Welcome to Arizona Sunshine! View the full article

  22. Warning: spoilers below! In a world where nothing is sacred and no one is safe, the outcome of The Great War for the Iron Throne is anyone’s guess. Game of Thrones Season 7 is poised to debut on July 16, and we wanted to arm PlayStation Vue members with a skimmable guide to the biggest developments last season so you’re ready for the big day. There’s Snow Place Like HomeSeason 6 begins with Jon Snow dead — killed by his brothers of the Night’s Watch. After many attempts, the Red Woman Melisandre resurrects John Snow; we also learn that Melisandre is much older than she appears. After executing his treacherous brothers, Snow leaves the Night’s Watch for good. Meanwhile, Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy escape Winterfell while the villainous Ramsay Bolton murders his father, stepmother, and new baby brother. These killings make Ramsay Warden of the North. Sansa reunites with Jon Snow, and they decide to take back Winterfell, sparking the Battle of the Bastards. Jon Snow and the scrappy Wildling army attack Ramsay Bolton’s larger force. Just when it seems that Jon Snow will fail, the knights of the Vale sweep in and crush Ramsay’s army. Afterwards, Jon Snow is named King of the North. It’s later revealed that he is the son of Lyanna Stark and Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, which makes Snow cousin to Arya, Bran, and Sansa Stark — and the nephew of Daenerys. In other words: Jon Snow is a rightful heir to the Iron Throne. The Calm After the StormMeanwhile in the East, Daenerys is taken prisoner by the Khalasar and forced to join the downtrodden widows led by Dosh Khaleen. Jorah Mormont and Daario Naharis join forces with Daenerys and return to Meereen, but not before Daenerys sets fire to her captors and earns the following of the surviving Khalasar bloodriders. Ser Jorah reveals himself and regains Daenerys’ trust. She orders him to find a cure for his debilitating Greyscale disease. Elsewhere, Tyrion Lannister and Varys rule the city of Meereen in Daenerys’s absence. Upon her return, a fleet of slaver ships launch an attack on the city. At great risk, Tyrion releases Daenerys’ captive dragons to save Meereen. Theon and Yara Greyjoy show up in Meereen and offer Daenerys the Iron Fleet to sail across the Narrow Sea to Westeros and claim the Iron Throne. “I Choose Violenceâ€At King’s Landing, the tension between Jaime Lannister and the High Sparrow rises. With a little help from the Tyrell army, Jaime confronts the High Sparrow and attempts to free Queen Margaery Tyrell. He discovers that the High Sparrow is manipulating the child king Tommen — there will be no freeing the Queen. Elsewhere in King’s Landing, Cersei Lannister declines an invitation from the High Sparrow. This creates a confrontation, and Cersei’s silent hulking bodyguard, revealed to be an undead Ser Gregor “The Mountain†Clegane, beheads a Sparrow in the scuffle. Naive King Tommen punishes his mother by putting her up for trial in the Sept of Baelor alongside Ser Loras Tyrell, and denies her trial by combat. On the day of the trial, Cersei uses planted Wildfire charges to destroy the Sept, killing the High Sparrow, Ser Loras Tyrell, and Queen Margaery. King Tommen, Cersei’s son, jumps out of a window in grief after witnessing the death of his wife, Queen Margaery. By default, Cersei becomes the new Queen of the Seven Kingdoms — again. Let’s Not ForgetElsewhere in the world, other important characters are on their own journey that will surely lead back to Westeros. Bran Stark and the White Walkers Bran is still beyond the Wall and having visions. He discovers that the Children of the Forest created the undead White Walkers to protect themselves against the First Men, and his visions reveal Jon Snow’s true heritage. The White Walkers are marching south toward King’s Landing, setting the stage for a climactic final battle. Dragons Mystical creatures and Daenerys Targaryen’s loyal pets. Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion have an important role to play in the war for the Iron Throne. Will they even the odds against the White Walker horde? Samwell Tarly Samwell visits home and receives an unwelcome greeting from his surly father. With Gilly in tow, Sam steals his family’s ancestral sword, the Valyrian steel Heartsbane, and makes off for the Citadel to become a maester. Helpful hint: White Walkers are vulnerable to Valyrian steel. Arya Stark Arya regains her sight, but she intentionally fails another assassination. As punishment, the Faceless Men send the Waif acolyte to kill Arya. Arya defeats the Waif and leaves the House of Black and White for good, heading home. Petyr “Littlefinger’ Baelish Master manipulator and Lord Protector of the Vale, Petyr still commands a powerful army. His goal is to sit on the Iron Throne with Sansa as his queen. He questions Jon Snow’s right to be King of the North and puts doubts in Sansa’s head about Jon’s loyalty. The Walls Are Closing InThe playing field is set and the pieces are moving toward a final conclusion. Who will be the last pawn standing? Will it be fan-favorite Daenerys Targaryen, Mother of Dragons? Or the underdog Jon Snow, now revealed to be of royal lineage? Will it be the cunning Cersei Lannister, who always seems to be one step ahead? Or will a surprise contender like Lord Petyr “Littlefinger†Baelish swoop in to steal the prize? No matter the victor, you either win or you die. Season 7 of HBO’s Game of Thrones premieres July 16. Watch live on PlayStation Vue or catch up with every episode available now On Demand. 24. Earlier this year, our team had the great pleasure and honor of touring the offices of Polyphony Digital as the developers continued their tireless work on Gran Turismo Sport. Guided by Studio Founder and Gran Turismo Creator Kazunori Yamauchi, we enjoyed a rare look inside their studio, sampling their passion, expertise, and commitment to the world’s premier racing series. See it all for yourself, from the well-earned wall of accolades to prototype furniture designed to house a steering wheel and pedals. Yamauchi shares his feelings leading into the finalization and launch of Gran Turismo Sport, and — much to our surprise — treated us to an impromptu piano performance that left the entire team speechless. We hope you enjoy this insight into the Polyphony Digital team, recorded on location in Tokyo, Japan and debuted live at E3 2017 last week. View the full article
  25. As we journey towards early 2018, we want to bring you behind-the-curtain of God of War’s development with stories you may not hear anywhere else. This is a new beginning, and a deeply personal quest for the franchise and Santa Monica Studio. We’re very excited to bring you into the heart and soul of our process. Follow us @SonySantaMonica to always stay informed. A freezing blizzard roars while shadows of wolves can be seen in the distance. A seemingly mysterious mountain looms in the distance while a broken, gigantic statue sits in the middle of a quiet lake guarded by a large creature lingering beneath. These embers of our new Norse universe describe the rich, visual areas Kratos and Atreus will experience in God of War. How was the visual look and feel of our take on Norse mythology defined? It all centers around one defining piece of concept art from acclaimed artist, Jose Peña. The Visual FoundationJose worked as a concept artist here at our studio at the outset of the new vision for God of War. Excited and wide-eyed at the opportunity, he and our Creative Director, Cory Barlog, immediately connected on the new direction, but leaving quite a bit to Jose’s imagination initially.. Unbeknownst to Jose was the immense challenge that would be set before him: create an original defining piece of artwork to set the visual tone of the new direction for God of War. Cory remembered clearly how their first conversation went, “The inception of this very first concept art was from a one paragraph write-up and a phone call with Jose, talking about the mood and the tone. I think I threw a bunch of stuff at him with buzzwords like more grounded; the fact that his son is not a burden; the fact that Kratos and Atreus are together battling a very hostile world. And he was just smiling at the other end of the Skype call, and because of the new direction, we weren’t able to provide him with exact ideas.†The call ended, and Jose took a deep breath. He immediately started working and delivered several key concept art pieces to the team within the span of a few weeks. Jose made sure to center his first concept art piece on a familiar but older Kratos and his son, Atreus. Little did Jose know this concept art piece would be one of the most valuable and foundational pieces for the new visual direction of God of War. Cory remembered how amazed he was when he saw the art piece for the first time. He remarked, “The way Jose was able to capture exactly what we were looking for was astounding. He has a grounding in historical illustrations and a desire to dig deep and understand the most about each individual piece. There was so much humanity on top of the mythology and to capture it the first time out was ridiculous.†There was a consensus amongst our small team at the time, Jose had struck gold. Cory said, “This artwork truly became the beacon and lit the path for us. Everything we did – we referred back to this piece.†Principal Character Artist, Rafael Grassetti was also there the day Jose’s artwork was shared amongst our studio – he was stunned. “This art piece was definitely what everyone had in mind,†Raf commented. “It was a big inspiration for everyone who joined the project and saw this. Jose was the first one to get what we were doing and what we were making. Even on the final color correction, we kept coming back to what Jose was doing here and integrating every single part of this to try and get it closer to what he did.†Decoding the Artistic DetailsTake a second look at Jose’s concept art: what stands out most to you? There are so many layers of intrigue and detail all over the piece to decode. For our team, one central theme immediate to us was defining the relationship between Kratos and his son. Raf explained his perspective on the importance of seeing these two characters framed in Jose’s art, “The first time you see Kratos and Atreus’ relationship, you get it. This artwork sells the connection. You see many other elements, but it’s not the main focus. This is more of a piece between the father and the son.†“This artwork truly became the beacon and lit the path for us. Everything we did – we referred back to this piece.†Cory, nodding his head in agreement, pointed to the significance in the characters’ positioning and stances. “You look at this piece, and you see the idea of Kratos protecting the kid,†he said. “Kratos puts himself in between harm and the son as he wants to take the brunt of the first blows. Atreus needs his father, but he also looks capable. You show the son connecting and holding onto Kratos’ arm, but you also see the kid with his knife out. It’s the idea of this parental yet distant relationship.†The change in landscape and adversaries also presented unique challenges Kratos and Atreus would have to face. Raf noted this particular theme as, “a fight against Kratos’ enemies and adventures.†He commented, “In the artwork, you see the challenges ahead and the goal up top. Everything you do to have to protect the son is an integral part of this adventure. Jose played with the focus of the image to have us, the viewer, understand everything going on yet still have lingering questions about the world.†Cory looked intently at the falling snow, feeling enraptured by the visual cues that alluded to a different yet somewhat familiar journey. He commented, “The idea of this unforgiving world and the visual tone with the snow, it just makes you feel cold. And there is this adversity between you and your destination at all times. Yet there is this building of unknown origin guiding you to the top of the mountain. That is the promise of adventure in every God of War game, and it still rings true here, even in this different setting.†“In the artwork, you see the challenges ahead and the goal up top – everything you do to have to protect the son is an integral part of this adventure.†Tying all of these elements together was the distinctive visual style that made for a fantastical yet grounded filter. Even though this new land may be full of strange, incredible creatures, Jose made the world feel tangible. Cory again reflected on his adoration for the style and its implementation in Jose’s concept art. He stated, “This visual style borrowed from that pre-digital era where everything was optical, like all of those awesome fantasy 80’s movies. They all had this sort of classic, storybook vibe without the super crazy over-saturated colors. There is an element of this storybook fantasy quality in the concept art that you don’t often see in video game visuals.†From Past to PresentAs Cory now looks at Jose’s artwork months and months later, he reflected on the original inspirational art piece of God of War 1 (pictured below). Here, a very early version of Kratos looks out into the desert landscape. Cory contemplated the differences yet also surprising similarities between the two games. He said, “Looking back on God of War 1’s original concept art piece and our current God of War concept art piece, there are these fantastic creative similarities that I think our studio inadvertently shot for but at two different angles.†Cory pointed to the first God of War concept art piece and commented, “Initially, our team wanted this very real and mature take on Greek mythology. But even in that original image, you can see a fantastic destination; a chasm seemingly uncrossable that is preventing you from getting there; and the hostile, iridescent environment against you. And then this warrior looking off into the distance.†At the same time, Cory noted the key differences between the two art pieces: a maturation of not only the series but Kratos himself. Cory said, “Although the hero’s journey is present in both of the images, I do think there is a sense of growth when you put those images side by side. You see Kratos starting in his youth in the God of War 1 art piece, and in this current concept art, he is now moving towards his middle-aged self – the idea of Kratos taking on this responsibility of parenthood in a different way. He was perhaps too young and impulsive in his early years, which made him make bad decisions, so you see this change and transition in Jose’s art.†The Journey From Art to GameA fascinating aspect about game development is the evolution from concept art to gameplay… For instance, Kratos and Atreus’ clothing have been reworked multiple times before final. Raf commented, “The costuming was awesome to see in Jose’s concept art and that they lived in this universe, but when you put that in the actual game, it’s actually hard to see because of the high-paced combat in the game. We wanted to make sure we stay inspired from the piece in terms of the clothing. It was one of the biggest initial challenges we had after seeing the piece and translating the artwork to gameplay.†Cory pointed out another challenge – Atreus’ hair. In Jose’s art piece, Atreus’ hair is grey, which constantly fluctuated throughout the production. Cory joked about some of the different iterations they played around with since then, “At one point, we went from the grey hair to an interesting render of Atreus having no hair at all. And I was like, ‘Oh, I kind of like that. Very interesting.’ But I think people thought Atreus suddenly looked like Mini-Kratos and was too ridiculous.†These drastic changes to Atreus’ hair, however, were quickly finalized by Jose with the ‘haircut’ into what we see today. Other aspects of the artwork evolved from the original piece, such as Atreus’ arm tattoos. Although he did not have his bow and arrows just yet, the first signs of his tattoos were shown here, and as Cory described it, “actually allows the kid to have steady aim with his future bow.†Also, Kratos’ base axe model was born from Jose’s concept art. Cory remarked, “Our approach to keep things simple at first allowed us to really hone in on what feels really cool. With the axe, for instance, we started with the straight handle before later adding a curve onto it.†“Kratos is now moving towards his middle-aged self: the idea of taking on this responsibility of parenthood in a different way.†The enemies that made it into the final game were heavily inspired by Jose’s concept art as well. Raf created the Draugrs specifically for the first E3 2016 trailer and remembered how much the original artwork helped with those designs.
