So i was told along time ago that this was not possible. I keep reading online i can get a SATA external case and copy files to my PC. So i happen to have one and plug it into pc.. the pc recognizes the drive..but i cant access it. Really it makes the sound like new hardware is installed and the first time i plugged it in it gave me the HD serial number and said it was ready to use.. however its not available in MY COMPUTER . I see it in my device manager but i cant do anything with it. Many reports say that i cant do this .. but some say i can. So i called sony and asked and the rep told me that there is no documentation on this but it is possible cuz his buddy did it for him. So what am i missing i guess is more the question or do you think dude just said that to say it? Any help would be great.. i had a lot of time spent on GT5 and would hate to race all over again.. however i did buy a wheel the day my ps3 went out.. (before it kicked)

i dunno if this would be any help but when my ol 60g died, i was afraid to get it fixed cuz i heard it came back otally wiped out. what i tried was this...

i found an external hard drive (cant memebr the name now) that used on my pc. it hada button on the front, and to backup my p hd all i had to do was hit the button and go about my buisness. so when my ps3 ded, just for shits and gigles i plugged the external hd into a usb port, turned on the ps3, and hit the button. i think i got about 90% of my files off the old one. i got game saves and data, but i know i had to redownload a crapload of rockband songs cuz the external hd didnt pick up any of em.

Some save files like Assassins Creed 2 and I think brotherhood cannot be copied I am not sure bout GT5 but that might happen so you might just have to start over man. I don't know why they don't have anything in their system that lets you just keep your HD and send the system in and repair it and just pop the HD back in. Not only that with external HDs you have to have it fat 32 or whatever which is basically a dead system from what I see...I would try putting it in another computer or try putting it in another ps3.

I also had a 60gb die on me.

I recently got one of those SATA things Dub is talking about. Can I just take the 60gb HDD from the old PS3 and plug it into my new PS3 slim and transfer the data?

I don't have game saves to transfer, I just have videos I want to tranfer.

You can try, I don't know if it will work because of the different system I think it should if the HD fits.

No. Using the SATA HD reader and then plugging it into the the slim via a USB.
