  7. Hello again, everyone. Blake from Ironwood Studios here. Today, we’re discussing what goes into a road trip in the Olympic Exclusion Zone and the fantastic news that Pacific Drive is coming to PlayStation 5 on February 22, 2024. Play Video Our gameplay loop has multiple stages – repairing and upgrading the car, planning your routes, and making it back in one piece after raiding the Zone. As you get deeper into the forests, swamps, and other areas of the Olympic Peninsula, you’ll build the knowledge and skills you need to survive. Let’s talk about what goes into planning your road trips. Repair, tune-up, and upgrade your vehicle Hopefully, you’ve made it back to the garage in one piece after your last harrowing adventure, and you can start fixing the car before your next outing. Take a minute to assess the damage – getting a good look at your car’s individual parts will often tell you what needs the most work. It’s possible you have a flat tire that needs to be repaired with a sealing kit, or you can make an entirely new wheel. If a panel is dangerously close to broken or flat-out missing, you can craft new ones from the scrap metal and other materials you gathered on your last trip. If you’re lucky, some of these might even be upgrades. It’s not just body panels either; your headlights, engine, and wheels can all take damage from the Zone (or your driving), and it’s also a good idea to look them over. It’s time for the fun stuff once your car is back in one piece. Spray on a slick new coat of paint, or apply some racing stripes using consumable decals. You can even swap out the bobblehead that adorns your dashboard. There are a few different ones to choose from, so keep an eye out the next time you’re looting containers in the Zone. You should also take care of the essentials like gas and charging your batteries once you’ve made your upgrades. There’s a gas pump in the garage to fill up with – if you’ve got the optional and beneficial side-mounted gas tanks, those can get topped off, too. Flip the switch on the desk to recharge your car instantly, and you’re good to go. Plan your next road trip Well – you’re not leaving just yet. You need to make a stop at the route planner, a giant map on the wall that tracks your progress through the Zone, and it gives you essential information about what you might need on your next run. Hover over locations to reveal information about where you’re headed before selecting your final destination. It’s not all about where you end up, though – you’ll be making stops on your trip along these abandoned highways, so knowing a little bit about the journey ahead of you is a good idea, too. Check for atmospheric shifts, radiation density, potential Anomaly encounters, availability of resources, and more. At the same time, you look at stops on the road – you’re still able to modify the car while in the garage, too, so take this opportunity to adapt the vehicle to your route if needed. Keys in the ignition? Is the parking brake off? Great. Hit the gas, and let’s finally get out and into the surreal world of the Olympic Exclusion Zone. Generally, you’ll pass through a few different biomes on the way to your final destination. Forest biomes have a lot of foliage multiple types of road surfaces, and changing weather can make driving through trickier sections a little difficult. Swamp biomes feature a little more open space, but there are watery sections that will slow the car down and majorly impede your progress. You’ll pass through towns and research stations on your way forward that contain valuable items if you know where to look. There’s a variety of lootable containers, some harder to get into than others – but that’s why you brought your trusty crowbar, right? You’ll also be collecting Anchors – artifacts originally meant to contain the expansion of the Zone. These glowing orbs provide you with a special energy that you can use to upgrade the car and escape from the Zone – more on that later. Eventually, you and the car will come upon a wall hundreds of feet high and clearly there to keep the more dangerous parts of the Zone isolated. However, that’s not a problem for someone equipped with the best 80’s wood-paneling and sci-fi gadgetry. You’ll find your way through the wall and into deeper parts of the Zone, but stay vigilant because things can only grow wilder from here. Hit the road and dodge hazards Once you’ve gathered your resources and have enough Anchors – it’s time to leave. Assess your surroundings and look at your in-car map before you select one of many available exits – but be smart. Some exits will be easier to get to than others. As you choose, a Zone Storm will start to close in on you; from then on, it’s a race to safety. Crash through the foliage, fishtail through the mud, and try to keep the wheel pointed straight towards the giant pillar of light ascending into the sky because that’s where you’re headed. Anomalies and other hazards don’t give up just because you’ve found an exit, so make sure to dodge the Abductors, Bunnies, and Can Openers – it’s going to hurt if you get caught in the storm’s radiation. As you take that final drive of faith through the illuminated pillar, everything will go white as you leave the Zone behind. As the light fades, you’ll find yourself warped back to the safety of your garage. Ready to gas up and pick the next location to investigate in this strange and wonderful world. After a healthy amount of repairs and upgrades, of course. Maybe even some painted-on flames. Pacific Drive will be available for PlayStation 5 on February 22, 2024. View the full article
  8. I’m Brad Flick, Design Director behind Penny’s Big Breakaway, an upcoming 3D action platformer, coming out early next year on PlayStation 5. Today, I will break down one of the bosses in our game. If you are unfamiliar with Penny’s Big Breakaway, you play as Penny and her partner Yo-Yo. Your goal is to help Penny escape through the world of Macaroon. Within each level, like any good platformer, you will face multiple obstacles: an endless penguin army, deadly traps, challenging hazards, denizens in distress, and varied bosses. Today, we will check out one of these bosses, Mr. Q. Play Video Check out the new animated trailer for Penny’s Big Breakaway Mr. Q is the kingdom’s top scientist and a powerful magician. He is found in Zaphara, a power station in a desert with cobalt sands. You must be careful, as Mr. Q is both wise and unpredictable. Let me tell you how we developed this character and what you will do in this battle. Mr. Q’s inspiration came directly from looking at Penny as our lead example. She uses a yo-yo, so the team began researching other skill toys for our other characters. This led us to the thought of a hacky sack – something Mr. Q could kick around. Mr. Q developed the technology that harnesses the electrical powers of the desert, so naturally, he juggles highly charged conductive footbags and tosses them at you. The first part of the battle becomes a bit of energy tennis, as we like to call it. You must manage successful volleys with Mr. Q. I find using our game’s Pro controls easier during this battle. With this setup, the yo-yo is mapped to the right analog stick. You can stand there and easily aim the yo-yo in any direction. This may be easier than turning Penny to meet each shot. After successfully kicking the electric ball back, you move to the second part, where you must scramble to pocket the many heads of Mr. Q on the giant billiards table. Returning to Mr. Q’s inspiration, we had a separate idea for a snooker shot boss encounter. Looking at what we already had, we decided to merge the two concepts: Mr. Q is a powerful, long-legged magician, and his head is a billiard ball – in fact, he has several different heads with multiple personalities. He can be antagonistic one minute and empathetic the next. We wanted the boss battle with Mr. Q and many other encounters, to focus on movement and evasion. This is a recurring and major theme in the game, and we want to reinforce that Penny is not built for combat. In the game, you must often answer the question, “How do you defeat a boss without using the yo-yo as a melee weapon?” This nonviolent approach wasn’t without its challenges: as a designer, how do we communicate the personalities of these characters? How do we help you understand what to do? With Mr. Q, the camera angle is down low. This helps focus on the gameplay of energy volleys and lets you see his kooky battle animations. Finally, the billiard concept and giant table helped us immediately tell you your goal: Mr. Q’s head, corner pocket. We can’t wait for you to see the rest of our cast of characters when the Penny’s Big Breakaway launches early next year. See you next time. View the full article

The new season brings more Multiplayer maps; game modes, the next mission in Zombies; the introduction of Urzikstan in Call of Duty: Warzone, and much more. Season 1 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and Call of Duty: Warzone launches on December 6 on PlayStation 4 and PS5. Multiplayer — New maps, game modes, Loadout items, Ranked Play Meat (Core, Launch): Make mincemeat out of your enemies at the East Bay Meats slaughterhouse. Use of the new Tac-Stance ability to combine agility with accuracy while weaving through the small confines of the meat locker and processing center. Greece (Core, Launch): Test your mettle in a once-idyllic coastal town, where waters at the shore lap at the hull of a burning yacht. Navigate the city center of this medium-sized map where narrow alleys cut between the lines of shops. Dive into the water when you need to reposition and use the copious vantage points to get above your enemies. Rio (Core, In-Season): Take in the vibrant colors of Rio de Janeiro as you battle across an upscale shopping center. Face enemies in tight quarters throughout the mall or move through the vibrant exterior streets in this small- to -medium- sized map. Look for vantage points in the covered walkway, over the garage, and on top of vehicles. Spacing is tight, so be ready to engage. Training Facility (Gunfight, Launch): Challenge another duo within the remains of an old warehouse, now repurposed as part of Konni Group’s training facilities. Perch on the second level for a greater view of the area or move through the interior spaces to ambush your enemies. Gunfight returns plus other new modes Gunfight returns to Call of Duty, pitting two teams of two against one another in a round-based match. There are no respawns, and all players are assigned the same randomized Loadout at the start of each round, which changes every two rounds. The first team to win six rounds wins the match. Five maps at launch: Season 1 brings the new Training Facility map along with four Carry Forward Gunfight maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II: Alley, Blacksite, Exhibit, and Shipment. All or Nothing: Deploy with Throwing Knives and no ammo. Get one elimination to activate the Scavenger Perk, allowing you to retrieve ammo pickups for your weapon. The first to land 20 eliminations wins. More modes will be added to the mix during Season 1. Wield the Ray Gun in the new Vortex mode, plus load into Infected, Headquarters, and Team Gunfight. New Vest and Killstreaks Equip the new Assassin Vest: kills don’t display skulls and the Operator is immune to UAV and enemy radar effects (including while stationary). Unlock two new Killstreaks via Armory Challenges. Call in the Swarm to deploy mosquito drones that provide blanket coverage over the entire area. Activate the EMP to disrupt enemy Killstreaks and equipment. Ranked Play launches in the mid-season Ranked Play is a feature-packed competitive Multiplayer mode that leverages the Call of Duty League-approved rules, restrictions, maps, and modes. Track your standing with a visible skill rating and earn rewards across multiple Skill Divisions and Tiers. The best of the best will be featured in the Top 250 Leaderboard and Division. Zombies — The next mission plus Rifts, a new Wonder Weapon, and more The Season 1 update brings new challenges and rewards alongside a new story mission that will test your abilities in the fights ahead. Enter the Rift: These otherworldly labyrinths are located inside the Dark Aether, where squads have 30 minutes to complete a series of increasingly chaotic objectives to earn exceptional rewards. Find Sigils to unlock these Dark Aether Rifts. New Wonder Weapon: Transform enemies into allies with the powerful V-R11. Shoot zombies and transform them into zombie-slaying humans, or blast humans to mutate them into friendly zombies. Take on the Warlord: The South Korean born Dokkaebi, a Lieutenant within Terminus Outcomes, is entering the Exclusion Zone. Squad up, infiltrate her fortress, and take her out. New Classified Schematics: Activate the Dog Bone to summon a friendly Hellhound companion that will follow you and attack nearby threats until its health runs out. Equip the Golden Armor Plate for Plates that repair over time in addition to providing extra damage resistance. Wield the Aether Blade, a special Throwing Knife with infinite ammo and a boomerang-like combat style. Call of Duty: Warzone — Introducing Urzikstan Prepare to fight through the all-new Urzikstan map, a vast and captivating landscape with a mixture of rural, industrial, and suburban zones across 11 major points of interest. At launch, Urzikstan will support Battle Royale, Resurgence, and Plunder. Later in the season, play Lockdown and the new Limited-Time-Mode, Slay Ride Resurgence. All squad sizes for Battle Royale on Urzikstan will be available all season long. Carry Forward Maps: Once Season 1 has been live for 48 hours, Ashika Island and Vondel will join the playable map rotation. Updated Gameplay: The Season 1 update brings many of the new movement and other mechanics present in Modern Warfare III, along with new features, to Call of Duty: Warzone. Expect movement updates to support features like slide canceling, Tac-Stance, ADS while sliding, and more. For gameplay updates, all Operators will carry a dedicated pistol when swimming, climbing ladders, or ledge hanging, along with improved water combat, a manual Gas Mask, dedicated ammo slots, loot rarity, classic red dots, and more. New Environments: Take control of Call of Duty: Warzone’s first mobile POI with Urzikstan’s Drivable Train complete with forward and backward engine controls, a Buy Station, UAV Tower, Horn, Ammo Depot, and a guaranteed Legendary Supply Crate. New Perks: Equip new and returning Perks exclusive to Call of Duty: Warzone. Some of the new Perks include: Irradiated: Move faster and take less damage while in the gas. Tempered: Now also available as a Custom Perk, Tempered allows you to refill armor plates to full with two plates instead of three. Combat Scout: Bullets you fire briefly mark an enemy for you and your squad. Hitting the enemy from farther away increases the mark time. Resolute: When taking damage from gunfire, this grants a short bonus to movement speed. Shrouded: Drop a smoke grenade when downed. New Gulag: Urzikstan brings a new Gulag for 1v1 combat. Experience gameplay updates like the Ascender Overtime Finisher that players can use to exfil toward the end of the round, Gulag Public Events like Cash Grab, and, later in the season, the addition of night vision goggles during some Gulag fights. New Public Event: In the “Fly Buy” Public Event, multiple drones fly into the map to drop additional Buy Stations in the environment. Season 1 Combat Pack Stoke the flames of battle with the Season 1 Combat Pack, free for PlayStation Plus members in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and Call of Duty: Warzone starting on December 13. 14. Something Random – a new studio founded by the creators of Superhot VR – releases their new game, Toy Trains on PS VR2 on January 16, 2024. What is it, how did it come to be, and why can switching genres lead to better games? Hop on board to find out the answers to all these questions! Play Video What is Toy Trains? It’s a playful, track-building game taking place on a miniature railway brought to life. “At its core, it’s a game about making connections,” says Marcin Jóźwik, the project’s lead. “On the gameplay side, we pair little houses with construction sites in order to build meeting places for inhabitants of that world – Railies. On the story side, it’s about the need to uphold connections with other people, even when it proves hard. The theme radiates even outside the game itself. Our goal was to make something that can connect various generations. A title that can be enjoyed by kids, their grandparents, and everyone in between.” Toy Trains is not something you would probably expect from former Superhot VR developers. Indeed, these two games couldn’t be any more different! The first one is focused on ‘the dark side’ of games. Mainly, how young people can be influenced and consumed by them. The second shows that games can also be calming, relaxing and actually help dealing with hardships. Superhot VR was a shooter for ‘core gamers’ while Toy Trains is directed to players of all ages. While Superhot VR was mainly red and white, Toy Trains is colorful and cartoony. So, is there anything that connects them? “The design principles in both games are basically the same,” explains Cezary, the team writer/designer. “We’re always laser-focused on delivering gameplay that is easy to understand, fluent, devoid of any unnecessary fluff. If the player is not having fun within the first 15 seconds of the game – we failed at our job.” The other thing that connects those games is that both of them make time stop – but in a very different sense. From the first track put on the table you’ll be drawn to the gameplay and presented world. Most likely you’ll find yourself immersed to the point that you’ll take off your goggles in awe of how many hours have already passed. The ease of use, comfort and lack of distractions truly pulls you into Toy Trains and refuses to let go. Atmospheric music, clattering of little trains, the sounds of nature make for a very soothing experience. There is no rush, no timers, no score – only you and the place you create on the board. “We didn’t want the game to force the player to do anything,” adds Marcin. “Every challenge you face is open-ended and has various possible solutions. You always get to be creative and strategic about the map’s final outcome instead of simply solving a puzzle.” To enhance the creativity aspect, Toy Trains also leaves space for self-expression. The player can freely decorate the board once they’ve finished building the rails. Placing farms or little stacks of hay can transform the miniature entirely – make it personal and unique. The creation and puzzle-solving aspects of the game, along with its cozy, nostalgic presentation, make it a perfect game to enjoy by families and friends in front of a big screen. The timing and platform it comes to are not accidental either. Cold, winter afternoons will be perfect to sit in the living room, pass the PS VR2 headset along, discuss the challenges and admire tracks and decorations placed by our loved ones. With that, the team wants to prove that VR can bring people together instead of isolating them. The last remaining, unanswered question is – why did the team decide to make Toy Trains instead of another action title like Superhot? “It would be easy to make only shooters for the rest of our careers,” says Kuba, the company’s lead programmer. “But if you want to make truly unique things you can’t stand still. You need to challenge yourself, shake things up. Creativity comes from discomfort. That’s why we have begun with Toy Trains, but who knows what we’ll follow up with!” Toy Trains is set for a release on January 16 on PS VR2. View the full article

  17. Hi there, PlayStation Blog readers. The wait is almost over – Resident Evil 4 VR Mode releases on PlayStation 5 on Friday December 8, 2023. This free DLC brings a new level of immersion to the main story of Resident Evil 4 using the unique capabilities of PlayStation VR2. Read on for a preview of what to expect when Resident Evil VR Mode and the free gameplay demo coming out – but first, take a look at the trailer released today. Play Video Free Resident Evil 4 VR Mode update hits PS VR2 on Dec 8 To recap, Resident Evil 4 VR Mode is a free DLC for Resident Evil 4, and on its release on 12/8, it will allow you to experience the main story of the game using PlayStation VR2. Stepping into the shoes of United States agent Leon S. Kennedy in VR as he races to rescue the President’s daughter, you’ll experience an entirely new level of survival horror immersion. Resident Evil 4, which has sold over 5 million copies since its release this past March, takes the core of the original 2005 masterpiece and reimagines it using the latest technology. In VR mode, you will dive into the game’s world and face crazed villagers, huge creatures, and battles against Leon’s ultimate nemesis with a level of intensity that cannot be experienced on a traditional display. In addition to stunning VR visuals, 3D audio increases your immersion even further, making you feel as if you are right there in the game. Become the main character in the ultimate survival horror experience The same development team who brought you the incredible full-length VR experiences of Resident Evil 7 biohazard and Resident Evil Village have worked to make a truly immersive VR Mode using the latest technology. All of the weapons from the main story are represented in incredible detail and with intuitive controls to ensure you remain immersed at all times. In addition to these controls, the Sense controllers offer haptic feedback which feels unique for each weapon, be it a pistol, submachine gun, rifle or even combat knife. Combined with the intuitive feel of aiming and shooting in VR, the combat experience is more visceral than ever before. Of course, outside of combat scenes, all the classic Resident Evil puzzle-solving gameplay you’ve come to expect is present in VR. You’ll even become Ashley Graham in a section of the game where you control her and experience a taste of a different kind of fear without any weapons to fight back with. Resident Evil 4 VR Mode demo If you don’t yet own Resident Evil 4 for PlayStation 5, don’t worry: Capcom has you covered with a free VR Mode demo playable without the main game. This PS VR2 demo, which is available alongside the VR Mode DLC on December 8, lets you experience the start of the game and get a taste of the incredibly immersive survival horror gameplay that awaits. You can also try out the shooting range and experience how intuitive the controls are, from aiming and shooting to reload methods which change for each weapon. A message from the creators To wrap up, here’s a message from director Keisuke Yamakawa, and producer Masato Kumazawa. “Resident Evil 4 VR Mode takes advantage of advanced technology and features of PlayStation VR2, combined with the experience our development team has gained from previous Resident Evil VR titles, to allow players to truly become Leon and use a variety of weapons with their own hands to take on enemies which feel like they are standing right in front of you. This unique experience is only possible in VR, so with the free demo for all players and the DLC releasing for free for owners of the full game, anyone with a PlayStation VR2 can experience how VR deepens the survival horror. I hope you enjoy the thrills and scares of this game, in which survival is just the beginning of the nightmare.“ – Keisuke Yamakawa, director, Resident Evil 4 VR Mode “I’m so happy and grateful for the chance to bring this mode to you. All of us on the team have worked hard to bring you, the players, a fresh way to experience Resident Evil 4’s main story. The game features a huge variety of enemies, weapons and gimmicks, making for one of the meatier experiences in the series, so we wanted to make sure you don’t miss anything when playing in VR. Whether it’s your first time or you’ve already played or completed the game before, I think this new way to play will be totally fresh – I’m actually jealous of anyone who gets to experience the game this way for the first time! It’s not long now until the heart-pounding terror and excitement will be available. I hope you enjoy it!“ – Masato Kumazawa, producer, Resident Evil 4 VR Mode That’s all for this blog – thanks for reading and we hope you enjoy the game. View the full article
