We have been steadily revealing the roster for Tekken 8, and the excitement each reveal has generated with fans has been amazing. At EVO 2023, we announced that Azucena, a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter from Peru, and Raven, a secret intelligence agent specializing in ‘ninjutsu,’ will join Tekken 8 coming to PlayStation 5. Azucena is an all-new character in the series, while Raven returns from Tekken 6. In this article, we will dive into the design of Azucena and Raven, as well as a behind-the-scenes look. Azucena Milagros Ortiz Castillo Also known as the Coffee Queen, Azucena is the only daughter of the family running the Ortiz Farm, a Peruvian coffee plantation. She breaks into the world of MMA to serve as the poster child for her family’s farm, where she becomes an MMA champion beloved by her fans for her cheerful personality and fearless fighting style. She decides to compete in The King of Iron Fist Tournament to promote further and boost recognition of the family farm. An MMA fighter who dodges attacks with a special stance Azucena fights with sly and unconventional movements that are based on MMA techniques. Her signature move is the Libertador, a pose that provokes the opponent. She shifts into a stance where she can no longer block but instead instinctively detects and dodges her opponent’s high and low attacks. This special stance and her movements allow her to keep opponents from gaining momentum. The Libertador pose becomes even more powerful in Heat state, where Azucena automatically launches a counterattack after dodging an attack, putting more pressure on her opponent. Azucena’s primary aim to advertise her family’s coffee and represent the Ortiz Farm as their only daughter is highlighted by her actions throughout her fights. For example, when she K.O.’s her opponent with her Rage Art, a special cinematic scene is shown that looks like a TV commercial advertising her coffee. Her ancient martial art style elements and coffee farm roots represent her Peruvian origin While many characters in the Tekken series specialize in authentic martial arts, we wanted to introduce an MMA fighter who is especially adept at striking. We brainstormed around key characteristics embodying a carefree and exuberant attitude that symbolizes South America, and envisioned creating a character who always has fun fighting. This led to Azucena’s birth. We chose Peru as her home because they carry the ancient Incan martial arts tradition, Rumi Maki (martial arts centered around boxing). Peru was also a perfect fit for her backstory, which revolves around her background as not only a martial artist, but also a model and dancer, as well as her ambition to promote her family’s coffee farm to the world. A character design that embraces upbeat attitude and unique MMA moves With Azucena’s character design, we found it challenging to balance MMA striking techniques with a distinctive Peruvian flair. We incorporated detailed and colorful patterns inspired by traditional Peruvian garments into her look. We designed her costume to emphasize her unique fighting style by featuring a shorter jacket and sleeves with swinging fringe decorations. We also mixed modern, sporty elements, like her unique hairstyle and sneakers, to create a character full of life who radiates youth. Raven Raven is a secret intelligence agent, part of an independent unit under the UN who has engaged in multiple missions to prevent conflicts worldwide, and he is a master of espionage that utilizes ninjutsu. He ventured into training to prepare for his increasingly dangerous duties, where he mastered the art of shadow cloning. That is when he received an order summoning him to a new battle. A much-anticipated return to the series, where his evolved ‘ninjutsu’ establishes his enigmatic fighting style Following his time in Tekken 6, Raven underwent intense training to achieve an even greater physique, allowing him to utilize a more advanced form of shadow cloning. By using his special stance, Soul Field, he can use a range of versatile attacks, such as mid-range surprise tactics or attacks leveraging his ability to clone and teleport. His clone attacks are enhanced when in Heat state, and Raven can launch seamless wave attacks. He is recommended for players who enjoy tricky move sets that toy with their opponents or those who enjoy controlling the pace of the battle. A return marked by technological advancements and an essential role in the Tekken story Since his first appearance in Tekken 5, Raven has represented a fusion of the East and West at a high level in his fighting style, featuring tricky ninjutsu and powerful strikes that bely his lean physique. We wanted him in Tekken 8 because we knew the hardware performance of current consoles and the power of Unreal Engine 5 would allow us to showcase a more evolved form of Raven. He also has a much more significant role in the overall storyline this time. Previously, efforts carried out by the UN have not been portrayed much in the Tekken storyline. Raven and his organization will play a larger role in Tekken 8, including the UN’s decision to sanction G Corp, a relentless conglomerate led by Kazuya Mishima. A character design that retains iconic elements while becoming more Ninja-like and with a more impressive physique Raven’s character design was based on a concept that shows off his profound and massive physique. We wanted to upgrade his overall design without compromising his iconic elements. His silhouette highlights his arms and legs so players can easily recognize his acrobatic ‘ninjutsu’ movements. For the costume, we were conscious of the contrast between his chest armor resembling his muscles and leather pants while incorporating elements that portray the passage of time and events that may have occurred when he was absent from the canonical story. For example, we replaced his kunai with a short sword. You’ll also see that he has new tattoos on his arms, which are even more muscular now. There are also new visual effects, like ink splashes, during his fight sequences. We hope you enjoyed getting to know these two new characters, with Azucena’s debut, and Raven’s return. For Travelers who have completed the Archon Quest Prologue Act III: Song of the Dragon and Freedom, a Teleport Waypoint at the northeast of the Sumeru desert will be unlocked, revealing the nation of Fontaine on the far shore atop a majestic waterfall. Ascend the waterfall, and you will see an aquabus that is ready to take you to the major locations of Fontaine as you cruise along the canals. Once aboard, you can enjoy a scenic tour guided by the special Melusine crew member. You can freely explore this area and tons of World Quests when you arrive at Fontaine, but Fontaine’s Archon Quest will only unlock if you have completed the last Archon Quest, Caribert. A judgment, but also a performance Presided over by Focalors, the current Hydron Archon, and the God of Justice, Fontaine has an intricate judicial system that provides a unique power named Indemnitium for people’s daily life. For example, it is used as energy to run the aquabuses and lights in households. The Indemnitium is generated through the process of trials via the Oratrice Mecanique d’Analyse Cardinale, a machine that harvests people’s belief in justice. Therefore, trials have become important public events at the magnificent Opera Epiclese, where magic, farce, tragedy, and various performances also occur. It will also be the stage for Fontaine’s Archon Quest, where the magician duo Lyney and Lynette will put on their first show, or trial at the Opera Epiclese. From the Opera Epiclese, one can see the Court of Fontaine, the main city, reflecting the true beauty of Fontaine’s artistic attainments in the fields of architecture, entertainment, technology, and lifestyle. In this hub of culture and art, restaurants, opera houses, couture stores, workshops, and all manner of businesses thrive along lively streets packed with well-dressed individuals, creatures, and patrolling clockwork meka. However, apart from the glamorous upper town and bustling midtown, the city seems to have a seedy side in its sewers. Dance with clockwork meka Fontaine is also famous for leading technologies, and Travelers may have already benefited from some of their inventions, such as the Kamera. Aside from the Indemnitium generated from the belief in justice, the Fontaine Research Institute learned to control another power source, the Pneumousia, to provide energy for the clockwork meka, including those performing duties in the city and those hostile in the wild. The dancing meka duo Coppelius and Coppelia is one of the most intimidating yet elegant inventions. In the new dual boss challenge Icewind Suite, you can choose to challenge either Dirge of Coppelia and Nemesis of Coppelius, each performing a distinct combat sequence inspired by dance moves and figure skating. Once activated, Coppelius or Coppelia will unleash ferocious but graceful attacks that deal Cryo damage as it spins or dances. Dive into underwater legends As the nation is surrounded by water, Fontaine offers unique underwater adventures. It is said that today’s city was rebuilt near its drowned sites and that some creatures still live there. Certain areas of Fontaine can even allow Travelers to dive underwater for the first time. Thanks to a special blessing, you don’t have to worry about running out of oxygen underwater. But you will be given an Aquatic Stamina bar which will be consumed by sprinting underwater. You can collect Recovery Orbs to restore your stamina, or even pass through the Turbulent Bubbles to accelerate your movements. Combat is also different in the water. To attack underwater, you need to harness the ocean’s wisdom by absorbing unique abilities from special creatures in order to defend yourselves, break traps, and unlock treasures ensnared by seaweed. Another new boss awaits in an underwater cave, but thankfully, you can also use your combat skills on land. The Armored Crablord, Emperor of Fire and Iron not only has the defense ability like an iron crab, but also unleashes vicious Pyro attacks through its body organs. More stories, mysteries, and history of the past are also buried deep beneath the waters. Recruit the fontaine siblings The first three playable Fontaine characters are siblings: the magician duo Lyney and Lynette, and Freminet the diver. Travelers who reach Adventure Rank 25 and above can even claim Lynette for free through the latest seasonal event. Lyney is the reliable elder brother of the three, and he is known as one of the most dazzling magicians in Fontaine. As a five-star character, he is skilled with his bow and brings Pyro-element tricks during combat. When Lyney fires charged Prop Arrows, it can summon a magical Grin-Malkin Hat that can taunt nearby enemies. At the climax of his combat performance, Lyney turns into a Grin-Malkin Cat, burning the enemies nearby and igniting fireworks to end the fight. Different from her elder brother’s extroverted persona, Lynette stays low-profile as a magician’s assistant with keen observation, always assisting her brother Lyney from behind the scenes. By entering a high-speed Pilfering Shadow state, this 4-star Anemo sword user can approach the enemies in a flash and follow up with a piercing Enigma Thrust. At the height of her Elemental Burst, Lynette uses skillful sleight of hand to summon a large Bogglecat Box that deals Anemo damage at intervals, and it is also able to fire Vivid Shots that deal DMG from the corresponding element. Armed with maritime knowledge, the youngest brother Freminet is an exceptional diver, but prefers to stay out of the limelight. This 4-star Cryo character wields a claymore and prefers calm, icy strikes when entering the Pers Timer state upon casting his Elemental Skill. This professional diver will borrow the power generated from fully-pressurized Pers to inflict powerful Cryo and Physical damage. By unleashing his Elemental Burst, Pers Timer is boosted with higher efficiency and increased combat capabilities. Lyney, Lynette, and Yelan’s rerun will be available during the first half of Event Wishes in Version 4.0, followed by Zhongli and Tartaglia’s reruns. Meanwhile, Freminet will make his debut in the second half of wishes. Satisfy prerequisite conditions, and you can even invite Lynette for free in a limited-time event. More game quality-of-life features With abundant new adventures to explore, we will also introduce several significant functions and features in the upcoming Version 4.0 to boost the visual, control, and game performance on PlayStation. To further enhance lighting effects and to boost its degree of realism, we are introducing a brand-new feature, Global Illumination (GI), in certain areas of Teyvat. A key aspect of GI is indirect lighting, namely how light bounces and scatters off surfaces onto others. Unlike direct lighting as the only light source, GI allows objects, especially their colors, to be affected by multiple indirect lights from surrounding objects. For example, with GI enabled, walls, windows, or any other building parts may get affected by indirect lighting from nearby red tiles, creating a softer and more natural-looking shadow with a subtle reddish hue. Thanks to the powerful GPU, we will also add two features to enhance immersion underwater: the swarm simulation and soft-body simulation. The former mimics how a swarm of creatures move and is able to present amazing phenomena such as fish tornadoes where each individual fish has its own moving pattern, but together, they form a big herd that is moving simultaneously. The latter is used to depict the water plants swaying with the gentle ebb and currents, adding an enchanting allure to the underwater exploration. Meanwhile, we’re also experimenting with motion-controlled aiming using the DualSense wireless controller on PS5 and Dualshock 4 on PS4. By tilting or rotating the DualSense or Dualshock 4 controller, players can now fine-tune the aimed shots more precisely using the controller’s built-in accelerometer and gyroscope. For instance, if you want to aim up with your bow at birds flying overhead, you only need to tilt your DualSense controller upwards, akin to the way one would aim in the real world. Additionally, gameplay on PlayStation will also gain a loading speed boost, with special mention to that on PlayStation 4. The glorious first gen Corvette. In early 1953, there were no cars built in the United States that you could call a ‘true’ sportscar. The American sportscar market then was dominated by European sportscars that were imported after World War II. To change all this, the sports car that GM released under their Chevrolet brand was the Corvette. This first Corvette was born in 1953. Combining FRP panels with a steel backbone frame, it was very futuristic and advanced in style, and set its presence as an American-made sportscar. A 149.9 BHP, 3.8 L inline-6 was mounted in the 4,249 mm long, 1,773 mm wide body. The Corvettes made this year were all hand-made, and only 300 were produced. After seeing that these initial 300 cars sold out instantly, GM moved its factory from Michigan to Saint Louis in the following year of 1954, and prepared for mass production. In this year they produced 10 times the number of cars they had the previous year, at 3,640 cars. The specs of the 1954 model are the same as the first years, but midway through the model year they changed the cam profile, and the engine output was raised to 152.9 BHP. The front grille and rear design were changed for the ’58 model, and the most dramatic change in its looks involved the newly adopted quadruple headlights. Maserati MC20 ‘20 A masterpiece supercar carrying the determination and passion of Maserati. The MC20 is a mid-engine supercar announced by Maserati in 2020. Maserati are widely known for their elegant and masterfully constructed high performance GT cars with front and rear-mounted engines. The MC20 is the first mid-engine model in their road car line-up in 15 years since the discontinuation of the MC12 in 2005. With its butterfly doors, the body does not appear to have any obvious aero parts fitted. The car is built around a carbon monocoque that weighs as little as 100 kg by itself. Also, lighting measures have been implemented in each car area, allowing for a total weight of under 1,500 kg. The newly developed 3L V6 twin-turbo engine features the first F1 style pre-chamber combustion system used in a production car. It produces a maximum of 621.3 BHP and 730 Nm (74.5 kgfm) torque. Combined with an 8-speed DCT transmission, the car can accelerate from 0 to 62.1 mph in under 2.9s and is stated to reach a top speed of over 201.9 mph. A paramedic’s job relies on having a good ambulance. From the 1950s, Toyota had been producing and selling ambulances made from specially outfitted passenger and commercial vehicles. The latest model is the 3rd generation ‘Himedic’ high-standard ambulance. The body is based on the export model 200 Series HiAce Super Long and has been outfitted by Toyota’s race car development and customization team Toyota Customizing & Development. Propelling the 5,600 mm long, 1,895 mm wide, 2,490 mm tall body is a 2.7L 2TR-FE inline-4 gasoline engine. The front and rear of the vehicle are fitted with an all-LED array of red warning lights. The interior has been designed for the utmost functionality in a lifesaving situation. In the patient area, the already high roof of the HiAce has been raised even further to secure 1,850 mm of vertical space, and for the first time on an ambulance of this type, features sliding doors on both sides. Space in the patient area has also been improved over the previous model by the strategic relocation of equipment like the hand wash basin. Toyota GR Corolla MORIZO Edition ‘22 A 2-seater model that takes the GR Corolla to the extreme. Gazoo Racing (GR), Toyota’s high-performance brand, has used their experience in motorsports to produce the ultimate hot hatch, the GR Corolla. The aim for this car was to create exceptional performance, able to take on any rival. The base chassis of the Corolla Sport has had its front track widened by 60 mm and the rear by 85 mm increasing cornering performance. Additionally, to increase rigidity in hard cornering, 349 extra structural spot welds have been added. The powerplant is the same 1.6L 3-cylinder turbo dynamic force engine that was highly praised in the GR Yaris. The power output has been improved by decreasing exhaust flow resistance, exceeding the GR Yaris’ figure at a maximum 300 BHP. The drivetrain meanwhile uses an active torque split four-wheel drive system with a torsen LSD. Subsequently, the car manages to achieve both an exceptional level of stability and high maneuverability. Though the GR Corolla was introduced as the highest ever spec Corolla, a radical special model was also introduced at its debut, the ‘MORIZO Edition’. MORIZO is the nickname of incumbent Toyota Motor Corporation chairman and master driver, Akio Toyoda. This limited-edition model was born from Toyoda’s wish to ‘bring back Corollas that turn heads.’ To save weight, the MORIZO Edition has had the rear seats removed, effectively becoming a 2-seater model. It also uses a unique close-ratio transmission and final gear setup, and the maximum boost from the turbocharger has been increased to improve peak torque. Along with unique forged wheels and monotube suspension dampers, this model achieves a whole new level of performance.
