Finally, below, we’d like to share with you three of our insightful behind-the-scenes story excerpts. They go in-depth into the art and animation of making this game from the light and foliage in Alfheim to the fearsome, yet awe-inspiring Valkyries. Interested in reading the full stories? We’d love for you to check them out here. Deconstructing Hræzlyr – From Jet Turbines to Komodo Dragons Our Concept Artist, Stephen Oakley, pointed out one particular inspiration that took place with aquatic animals while creating early designs of Hræzlyr. “I know that the earliest thoughts revolved around this mechanic of the dragon being like a jet turbine. Something that’s terrifying and that could be a fun gameplay mechanic (with the suction pulling enemies, and characters towards it).” This gameplay mechanic led to artists José Cabrera, Vance Kovacs and Justin Sweet using different aquatic creatures to create a design. “There was a piece that José had done early on that helped catapult the design forward. He had something that looked like a basking shark embedded into the belly of the dragon. I was looking at bass, which some fish had a surprising amount of suction for. This ended up inspiring a lot of features that are still inside of the Dragon today, like the gills, and it led to us trying to think of creative ways that were inspired from real life – to think about how they would be able to do the things that he does.” On the animation front, the inspirations were focused on various creatures that create loud and powerful footsteps. Our Animator, Sophie Evans, recollected, “A lot of reference came from lizards, komodo dragons and tigers. These animals tend to be really heavy.” The movements of the Mountain Dragon needed to be powerful and strong, she said. “A lot of muscular animals like bears and tigers – they feel heavy because they have a lot of secondary motion from their muscles. With film and TV, you can get a lot of this type of movement, but in games usually, you don’t have the tech or support to have simulations on the muscles. So, I tried to imitate that secondary motion feeling with just the torso, so it’s really exaggerated – the up/down movement on the torso and even the exaggerated lateral left and right. This gives the dragon serpentine movements. So, a mix of reptilian back and forth mixed with really heavy up and down bounce is how I tried to approach this.” Click here for the extended story behind Hræzlyr. Creating the Valkyries – Balancing Fear and Elegance One of the most striking elements on the Valkyries came in the design of their wings. This became a very important element because of how the wings would be used in gameplay and it was also the first striking element that you would encounter when seeing a Valkyrie. Even the core design of these wings was very different from much of what you may have been used to seeing up to that point in the game. Lead Character Concept Artist, Dela Longfish, remembered some of the challenges associated with this part of the design: “Cory and much of the team really liked that the wings weren’t natural – creating an iconic look to these characters. But the wings were the most difficult part – getting these mechanical parts and making sure it didn’t feel out of place with the technology of the time. The design prompt was that we wanted these wings that were mechanical harnesses, but to make sure it fit with Vance Kovacs’ designs.” Our art team would play around with how the Valkyries would use their hands to push and pull the wings, in order to attack and defend. At one point, there were even handles on the wings to really accentuate their mechanical nature.” Click here for the extended story behind the Valkyries. Constructing Alfheim – Designing the Realm’s Two Clashing Sides A fascinating artistic challenge that the Light of Alfheim affected was the foliage. All around Alfheim, as you venture through by both foot and boat, you experience varying tree shapes and otherworldly environment art. Much like everything in this area, even these trees are affected by the Light of Alfheim. Luke Berliner, Lead Environment Concept Artist explained, “Early on, the trees, the environment looked like as if it was growing towards a singular light source and that would look very different than Midgard or any other place. I really liked the singular idea of that light source and how an entire ecology has grown around that in a unique way combined with a more fantastical architecture.” This idea led to interesting concepts where the team played with the region’s fauna and how that would react to having a light source centralized as a beam. Our Sr. Environment Artist, Erik Jakobsen, then took those concepts and translated them into the 3D in-game environment, although the process wasn’t so simple due to the complex nature of trees chosen. “These amazing trees, stretching towards the light, were definitely one of the first things I remember from Luke. This being the first realm you travel to made it difficult to strike a balance between real and magical. What looks good in a single beautiful concept sometimes needs to be tested out in 3D to get the balance correct. Leaves that are too red or too white may throw off the other level elements.” Click here for the extended story behind Alfheim. Thank you again so much to all of our fans worldwide. We’re humbled and honored to share all of our artwork with you! View the full article
  4. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be on your second or third playthrough of Detroit: Become Human by now, and some of its musical themes will have well and truly lodged themselves in your brain. Good news: starting today, you can stream the game’s phenomenal score via Spotify and Apple Music. Detroit’s soundtrack is the work of three different composers, each creating themes for one of the game’s three central protagonists. Philip Sheppard produced music for Kara’s plotline, Nima Fakhrara handled Connor, and John Paesano took on Markus. Check out Quantic Dream’s guest PlayStation.Blog post from April this year for more on how it came together. To mark the soundtrack’s release, we’ve got a special treat for you. Watch the new video below to see composer Philip Sheppard play Kara’s theme using just a single cello and a loop pedal. If you’re yet to dive into Quantic Dream’s twisting neo-noir thriller, Detroit: Become Human is now available for purchase via PlayStation Store. View the full article
  5. Hello, PlayStation players! My name is Youngjin Ko, a game designer and programmer at Korean developer DeerFarm. I’m excited to say our bullet-hell shoot ‘em up, Shikhondo – Soul Eater, is coming to PlayStation 4 this summer, both digitally (available from PlayStation Store) and as a limited edition physical version (available to order online at Play-Asia from June 28). For a long time, it has been a big wish to have my name featured in the credits of a console game. Now, with the release of Shikhondo on PS4, I am very happy that my dream has finally come true! I remember the first game I ever played. It was at an arcade and I was about five or six years old. The game was a side-scrolling shooter and it used Journey to the West (Hsi Yu Chi), a famous 16th-century Chinese novel, as a central motif. It was only recently that I learned that the name of the game was Chuka Taisen. Shikhondo and Chaku Taisen share a common theme – they are both shooting games based on Asian mythology. Because of this, I think Chuka Taisen inspired me to make a shooting game. Like many players of shooting games around the world, I’m a fan of Touhou Project – Japan’s famous bullet-hell shoot ‘em up series, which has been running for over 20 years. The first project of our team at DeerFarm was creating a doujin (fan-made/self-published) game of the Touhou Project. Touhou’s creator, ZUN, gave fans permission to make these types of derivative titles, so there are many examples of them. In fact, many of these fan games have been released directly to PlayStation 4 thanks to a collaboration between ZUN and Sony Japan called Play, Doujin! Shikhondo is a reinterpretation of our very first project, a doujin game of Touhou Project called Tales of Other Eastern Yokai (東方外妖傳), but with the ‘color’ of our team. Shikhondo is one of the many games influenced by the Touhou Project, it is our fifth game, but the first that really shows the team’s own creativity. The gameplay, the Asian background, the boss characters inspired by Korean myths – that is all our originality! Korean mythology is very interesting and provides a wealth of ideas to work with. For example, the stage 2 boss of Shikhondo is Chang-kwi (倀鬼), a yokai (demon) from Korean folklore with a very interesting story. According to legend, anyone who is killed by a tiger becomes attached to a tiger’s armpit, cheekbones and chin, and becomes a yokai. The yokai is only released if they can entice other unfortunate souls into the path of the tiger, so they too become its victims. In Shikhondo, Chang-kwi is designed as a woman who hangs upside down from the tiger’s jaw. Here you can see what Chang-kwi looks like in the game: There are six game modes in Shikhondo, including Arcade, Boss Rush, Hardcore, and a new 2-player local co-op mode added for the PS4 version. I think the most special mode, though, is Customization, which lets you change various settings of the game. For example, you can choose how Soul Collect – the game’s attack/scoring system – is activated, either by grazing (flying close to) enemy bullets or by shooting enemies. I hope you enjoy all the various combinations on offer! Thank you for reading, I hope you have fun playing Shikhondo – Soul Eater, and I look forward to seeing your high scores posted on the leaderboards! View the full article

  8. As we get ready for summer, Oasis Games is preparing to bring you guys a fun new party game for PS VR. It has animals! It has aliens! It has fun local multiplayer! It’s… Animal Force! The game takes you to a cartoony alternate earth where humans are under attack by aliens. If only there were superpowered animals on a rocket that could fight back! Oh wait, there ARE superpowered animals that can save everyone—and you get to control them. Using the Move controller, you’ll control a rocket that can scoop up animals and move them around to fire at attacking aliens. You can guide them yourself, drop them in a good spot to defend or just make them wiggle and spin around if that makes you happy. There are 11 animal heroes in all, ranging from Panda to Cat to Eagle to Rhino, and each have cool abilities that you can upgrade. Your Mission Is to… Complete Missions The single player Story mode comprises seven distinct chapters with over 30 missions total. Starting in grasslands with simple enemies, you’ll move to desert, snow and city environments, a neat island, a dangerous volcano and finally, the alien lair itself—if you and your animals survive. (You probably will; you have a PS VR and that means you’re pretty awesome.) You can attach more than one animal hero to your rocket at one time; you can “snake” together (no pun intended) several of them at one time. Combining animals with different powers is a good idea. For instance, putting Panda with his fast DPS attack, Rhino that can freeze enemies and Pheasant’s protecting shield together can make a strong team! There are 20 enemy types and seven bosses in Story mode, one boss for each chapter. You’ll encounter simple Scout enemies first and then more difficult and varied baddies that can fire at your animals, summon other enemies and otherwise make life difficult for you. There’s also a tower defense mini-game to play just for kicks. If that sounds complicated, perhaps you need to relax for a minute and watch this video to what it looks like in action: But What About Your Friends? Sounds pretty fun to play with VR, but what about your cool friends waiting for their turn? Well, up to three friends can join in for three types of local multiplayer minigames using the TV and DualShock 4 controllers. In Steal the Statue, the DualShock players will be disguised as enemies trying to get past the VR player without getting shot. In Odd One Out, the VR player presses a button to make robots—and players trying to hide as robots—move while trying to detect the players before they escape. In Divide & Conga, the DualShock players try to collect 10 humans so they can escape on the rocket—their only problem is the VR player can zap them as in a match-3 game, making up to three humans disappear at once! Animal Force FTW Animal Force will arrive on PS VR this July, bringing its special brand of zany party good times to players. Until then, we’ll be working hard to put the finishing touches on the game—can’t wait to deliver it to you! View the full article
  9. Hello everyone! This is Nathan Rowe, the founder of SculptrVR. I’m excited to announce the release of SculptrVR this Tuesday on PS VR! SculptrVR is built from the ground up to maximize your creative potential in VR. SculptrVR’s voxel engine lets you create, carve, and share insanely detailed sculptures with 10,000x zoom. SculptrVR’s origin is three years back. When I first heard about VR with tracked controllers in the summer of 2015, I couldn’t stop imagining what kinds of creation would be possible with those tools. I was convinced that VR with tracked controllers would make 3D creation easier and more intuitive than drawing on paper ever was. Our users agree: creating 3D objects in SculptrVR is easier than drawing in 2D ever was! Drawing recognizable objects in 2D requires training and understanding of things like perspective, outlines, and shading. In SculptrVR, you directly lay out 3D shapes, not their lines, and the graphics engine handles perspective and shading. Humans understand the world as objects, not outlines. This means even a 4-year-old can sculpt a recognizable apple, dog, television, tree, or flower. On PlayStation VR you have all the intuitive power that two hands reaching directly into the world gives you, and a tracked head to give full perspective and visual understanding of the scene. This makes creation intuitive, easy, and exact. When you combine that with SculptrVR’s 10,000x zoom, the power and precision in your hands is unrivaled! Creating the right tools to express that power naturally without overwhelming the user has been a large part of our effort for the last three years. We’ve worked hard to provide an easy-to-learn, intuitive, creative experience without giving up any of the potential. So far we’ve settled on nine shapes that can be used to add and carve away material, a smoothing and bulge/deflate tool for adjusting surfaces, some painting brushes, and the copy/paste tool. We also have the ability to control the day/night cycle, multiple materials (metal, clay, and glowing), and a layer system. The copy/paste tool is my all-around favorite tool that we’ve created. You can think of it as the “everything brush” or a custom stamp tool. Instead of sculpting one flower at a time in a field, you can rapidly fill that field with flowers. Or create a stadium with 1,000 chairs. You can also use it as carving tool to quickly add surface texture to a flat wall. It usually takes about 5-10 minutes to familiarize yourself with the tools, but then you can jump right into your first masterpiece! The SculptrVR voxel engine automatically ensures that surface detail is based on time and effort spent, not the size of the sculpture you make. You can sculpt whole landscapes miles wide and spend hours adding the tiniest of details. For example, you can build a rocky, snow-capped mountain with a stream flowing down its face. Along the stream, barely even visible from the mountaintop, is a farmhouse. In the house is a vase full of flowers resting on the kitchen table, and on one of the flowers is a spotted ladybug. That’s the power of SculptrVR’s multi-scale voxel engine. When you’re done, you can save your creations to the online gallery. I spend a bit of time every day looking through the gallery to see what new creations have been uploaded. It’s incredible to browse and see some of the things users have made with SculptrVR. I can’t wait to see the creations you all upload! We don’t think of SculptrVR as a finished, perfect product. We’re always testing out new tools to add and other new features, so please feel free to drop us a line and make suggestions! We’ve got a few things in mind to bring to SculptrVR in the next few updates. Importing reference images, exporting obj & fbx meshes, a snapping mode for geometric designs, new shapes, and even multiplayer! I hope you all enjoy SculptrVR as much as I’ve enjoyed making it so far! Cheers and happy sculpting! -Nathan View the full article
  10. Five minutes. It took me about five minutes to feel perfectly at home with the traversal mechanics in Marvel’s Spider-Man. Holding R2 (the “go” button, as I came to think of it) keeps Spidey moving quickly, whether he’s sprinting on the ground, running along walls, or swinging through the air. Transitioning between swinging and wallrunning feels exhilarating. Pressing X while midair performs a web zip, flinging our hero in a more or less straight line forward. Mixing this technique with more traditional swinging and wall-running is a great way to get from point A to point B (or C, or D, or E…) in a matter of seconds. Once you’ve arrived, you can perch atop objects by pressing R2 and L2 simultaneously. Simply put, traversal across Marvel’s New York feels empowering. Even before getting the hang of the swinging mechanics’ nuances, it’s really hard to, say, run into a wall and come to a stop — Spidey just adjusts on the fly and keeps running. This feels like the game the team at Insomniac has wanted to make since they were kids. Every action in Spider-Man is instilled with flat-out joy, whether you’re careening through the skies of Manhattan or treating some thugs to an extra-spicy knuckle sandwich. Combat, by the way, felt plenty accessible, almost to the point that I thought I had mastered it in a paltry few minutes of practice… until I opened the “Move List” window. Holy moly! Scrolling through the rundown of moves and combos available to Spidey felt like learning a new character in a fighting game. The demo I played taught me early on that you can press the Triangle button to zip yourself to an enemy to close distance and start a combo, or hold Triangle to pull the enemy to you. Once you’re within striking distance, you can let loose a flurry of attacks by hammering Square, or hold the button down to launch an enemy into the air. Tap Square again to follow the enemy up and begin an aerial assault, further highlighting the Wall-Crawler’s acrobatic prowess. I was even able to activate a “Suit Power” by clicking both thumbsticks simultaneously, unleashing a devastating spinning web attack against all nearby baddies. Building up a “Focus” meter by battling foes allows you to perform flashy finishing moves (Triangle + Circle). I found this extra-useful against more threatening enemies who had body armor and weapons. Of course, you can always web-grab a nearby trash can with L1 + R1 and sling it into their face, too. My time with Marvel’s Spider-Man culminated in a surprisingly tough fight against Shocker (who you may have seen briefly in our new E3 Showcase trailer). He actually beat the tar out of me enough times during my first run that it kicked me out of of the demo! Naturally, I returned for a chance at vengeance. I took a bit of time to explore Marvel’s New York in my second playthrough, finding hidden backpacks that contained collectibles (like an authentic Crusher Hogan poster!) and chasing down a getaway car to foil a robbery in progress. I didn’t forget why I was here, though. I tracked down Shocker and took another crack at him, this time noting his attack patterns and deftly dodging his shockwave attacks before zipping straight to him and unleashing a salvo of acrobatic attacks. This was a multi-phase affair, with Shocker changing attack patterns and really giving me a run for my money, but eventually our hero (and I) prevailed, ending the play session on a successful note (shout out to the booth attendees who let me finish the boss fight even though they were shutting everything down). It was already hard to doubt Insomniac based on everything we’ve seen about Marvel’s Spider-Man thus far, but finally getting a chance to play it cemented this as one of 2018’s must-watch games. Bring on September 7. View the full article

  12. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will hit shelves October 12, and as the launch date draws closer, we wanted to shine a spotlight on the remastered maps coming to the game, as well as to Black Ops 3 if you pre-order Black Ops 4 from PlayStation Store. The Back in Black Maps pack is a mix of fan-favorite maps from Black Ops and Black Ops 2, currently available only for PS4: “Firing Range,” “Jungle,” “Summit” and “Slums.” Now totally remastered in high-definition, each of these classic maps is hand-picked from the Black Ops portfolio and upgraded with the evolved gameplay, advanced graphical fidelity, and new mechanics of any recent Black Ops release – making for a versatile play experience. That versatility continues with more ways for the Black Ops community to interact with their favorite maps, as players can get their hands on the Back in Black Maps pack in both Black Ops 3 and Black Ops 4 Multiplayer. And with so many upcoming changes to multiplayer in Black Ops 4 – like gritty, grounded, tactical gameplay – Back in Black Maps owners who download the pack in both releases will enjoy two different, yet equally enjoyable ways to play. Start Here Those who already own Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 can immediately unlock the maps by digitally pre-ordering Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 from PlayStation Store. After pre-purchase, the maps will be available for immediate play in Black Ops 3. And upon release on October 12, the Back in Black Maps will also be playable in Black Ops 4. Those who don’t own Black Ops 3 can still easily access the Back in Black Maps if they are members of PlayStation Plus. Just log in, and Black Ops 3 will be available to download from PlayStation Store for free until July 11. Then, get the Back in Black Maps by pre-purchasing Black Ops 4 from PlayStation Store, and explore the pack in Black Ops 3 while counting down the days to play it in Black Ops 4. Now, let’s get reacquainted with these Black Ops community favorite maps! Summit Set in a blizzard, atop a tightrope-thin range along the USSR’s Ural Mountains, Summit has a natural place of prominence among the Back in Black Maps. Take to this Soviet snowscape and revisit the setting that hooked the world on Black Ops, as you fight and flank your way to victory. Surrounded by steep drops into sheer nothingness, Summit works well for varying playstyles while drawing players to the highly contested map center for engaging gunfights. Firing Range This close-quarters Black Ops map is set in a [CLASSIFIED] military location. With narrow vantage points, small houses and sheds, and a central tower, Firing Range is a hot, dry arena primed for fast-paced skirmishes, heart-pounding competition, and a range of combat styles. Jungle Another favorite map from the original Black Ops, Jungle leads players through a Vietnamese riverside village, rife with plummeting valleys, dense forest, and teetering vantage points. With winding, open lanes, tons of opportunities to flank and high verticality, Jungle is an incredible space for players to reinvent classic Black Ops gameplay. Slums From Black Ops 2, set in 1980s Panama, the small but focused Slums map is perfect for a challenge, with zero room to flank – players face the enemy head on. SMG gunners and equipment-heads alike will find rewarding gameplay along the urban, war-torn streets, which are home to an abandoned laundromat, a desolate parking lot and a central square that hosts point “B” in Domination. Slums makes for a classic face-off-style battle, as enemy teams duck and dodge to see who dominates first. Enjoy classic Black Ops combat locations with the Back in Black Maps, coming to Black Ops 4 October 12! Pre-order from PlayStation Store to start playing the Back in Black throwback maps in Black Ops 3 now. View the full article
  13. Of all the characters in the universe of Destiny, Cayde-6 has been one of the series’ most popular. The wise-crackin’ Hunter Vanguard has been one of Bungie’s most recognizable faces (and voices, thanks to the inimitable Nathan Fillion) for years — so why did they just kill him off during our E3 2018 Showcase? We caught up with the project lead on Destiny 2: Forsaken, Scott Taylor, to get some answers. Destiny 2: Forsaken | Gallery PlayStation.Blog: Tell me about the internal discussion about killing off Cayde-6. Who pitched the idea first, and what was the room’s reaction? Scott Taylor: There wasn’t a single lightning moment where someone unveiled a grand design about killing Cayde. It was much more organic than that and developed from a series of ideas we were trying to explore. We wanted to tell a story with huge stakes, but have those stakes be really personal to the player. We’ve done aliens trying to destroy the universe with the consequences of failure resulting in catastrophe. What if we could get that feeling with something closer to home, and more relatable? That was appealing. “Reaction to this has been all over the place across the studio.” We started discussing what we cared about as Guardians, and it became clear that the Vanguard had really come alive as characters for our fans. So each of the expansions over the last year have focused on them: Ikora in Curse of Osirsis, Zavala in Warmind and now Cayde in Forsaken. We haven’t taken a player off the board like this before, and we realized that the loss of Cayde would mean more to the Player than any other possible external threat we could think of. All the ideas came together and formed what became Forsaken. Reaction to this has been all over the place across the studio. Some people are mad, sad, frustrated, excited. We think that’s appropriate. It’s a big deal, and we’re taking it seriously. PSB: Is this going to be the main thread that carries us through the story of Forsaken? ST: Cayde dying sets everything into motion. The Player wants revenge and as they seek it out they begin to blur the line between what is right and wrong. The Player makes alliances they normally wouldn’t in order to wipe out their enemies. You see who killed Cayde – all of them, from the Barons to Uldren – and now they’re on your list. As you check the names off you learn more about Uldren and what he is looking to achieve. PSB: This feels like a pretty big shift for Uldren — in the first game we knew he was kind of a jerk, then he kind of disappeared after the events of The Taken King… now he’s made quite the reappearance. How long has the team been planning for this to be where he returns? ST: We’ve been working on this direction with Uldren for awhile. I don’t want to spoil anything, but there’s more going on with him than meets the eye. He’s the hero of his own story. You learn a lot about what’s motivating Uldren, and where he’s been, as you play Forsaken. PSB: Any word on his sister’s status / whereabouts? ST: I don’t want to get involved in the family affairs of the Sovs. You saw what happened to Cayde. PSB: Were any other characters on the chopping block initially when the Forsaken story started heading in this direction? ST: Cayde always felt right once we landed on this story. His death sets the table for the journey we want to take players on. I can’t imagine any other character hitting with as much impact. It’s striking to me that we’re leading with a character death for a Destiny game, because I think it shows that we’ve established characters that are meaningful to people. It’s sad to say goodbye to Cayde, but this raises the stakes for everything. This is a living world and we are pulling Cayde out of the Tower forever. Now we have to challenge ourselves to bring in new characters that can flesh out the universe even more. We need to be taking chances with our storytelling and not playing it safe. “This raises the stakes for everything.” PSB: This may be the darkest, most personal premise we’ve seen in Destiny thus far. Why did the team decide to take the story in this direction? ST: It’s important to grow and stretch different muscles. We need to be able to surprise players and evolve the universe. The stories of Uldren, Cayde and the Player came together in this really powerful way that felt like it could only be told by getting personal. Grittier than before. We are excited to embrace it and we hope our players are, too. Destiny 2: Forsaken launches on September 4 on PS4. Learn more about it here. View the full article

  16. “It just kept going on this upwards trajectory of fun,” explains Lars Bakken excitedly. Gambit’s Design Lead is talking about the growing list of gameplay mechanics that would go on to shape Destiny’s all-new activity. While the specifics of what Gambit would be have evolved over the past 18 months, two things remained constant: its name, and its adherence to three core design philosophies: new, different, innovative. “We wanted something that took the best parts of Destiny and smashed them together,” remembers Game Director Steve Cotton. An initial build, centred around a team-based gameplay loop (“Shoot combatants, watch something shiny pop out, grab it, bring it to the centre of the map”) formed quickly. It had a great hook, but Bakken knew they needed more to keep players coming back. And so one team became two, a light competitive angle became a frantic race to cash in the most points, and a climatic boss fight was built in to make sure the match didn’t fizzle. Fast forward over a year to the eve of E3, and we’re amongst the first group to experience the fully fleshed-out Gambit activity. 1. How Gambit works Boiled down, Gambit is a competitive, team-based speed run, hooked around four core steps: fight, collect, bank, invade (all four of which can be happening simultaneously). Across three rounds, two four-player teams get trigger-happy in separate (yet linked) arenas, racing to be the first to collect 75 motes from downed enemies. Hit that cap, and a boss (known as the “Primeval”) spawns in your arena. First team to down their boss wins. There’s that familiar arcade thrill typical of every Destiny firefight. But it also demands deeper team strategy to succeed. Teams can bank their motes to spawn higher-level enemies on the opposing side’s arena (known as ‘Blockers’), stopping them from cashing in theirs, or send in one of their own team (known as an ‘Invader’) to seed chaos. 2. What you can exchange your collected motes for There are three levels of Blocker (small, medium, large) paid for by banking five, 10 or 15 motes. 25 motes activate the portal that’s stationed alongside the bank in the arena’s centre. This allows a single Guardian from your fireteam to hop through to the opposing team’s arena. 75 motes will spawn the Primeval. As it stands now, the centre of the top of the screen HUD is dedicated to showing each team’s mote count, and will make it clear whether the opposing team has banked their motes or are just holding. In addition, a match commentator will call out important changes to the field – for example, where the next wave of enemies are appearing. 3. Why Gambit’s fireteam size is 4 Bakken references how four players neatly fit the mode’s ‘fight, collect, bank, invade’ mechanics as part of the reason for the team count. “You have your killing machine; your collector; your banker,” he explains. That critical fourth role, Invader, means three-Guardian Strike teams reach out to that buddy who’s the Crucible addict, further solidifying the crossover between PvE and PvP player bases. But it still gives PvE fans an opportunity to dabble in the PvP space. Bakken hopes that even those people who aren’t traditionally PvP fans will give it a try. As with everything else in Gambit, the team determined what the most compelling ratio was through playtesting. “4v1 feels better than 4v6, or 6v1,” explains Bakken simply. 4. Invaders can cause havoc to the opposing team… Cash in 25 motes into the arena’s bank in the centre of the map, and a portal opens up that’ll teleport one of your team to the opposing side’s arena with an overshield. The opposition will be notified of your invasion, and you’ll have 30 seconds to cause havoc before you’re pulled back to your side. The team under invasion will have to decide whether they save their power weapons and Supers for their last-act Primeval clash or cleanse their area of a weapon-wielding virus. 5. …and buff the Primeval However, once the opposing team spawns their Primeval, your portal to their arena remains permanently open. And every Guardian kill your Invader notches up tops up the health of their Primeval. Nasty. 6. Play well, and you’ll be the likely target of the Invader Play as an Invader and a new UI element will pop up: digits above each of the opposing fire team members, denoting the number of motes they hold. As killed players permanently lose their motes, Invaders can play smart and bankrupt an opposing side’s planned play with a well-aimed shot. 7. Don’t plan to camp out at your arena’s portal Portals sit beside the mote bank in the centre of the map. While these jump points to the opponent’s map remain static, your spawn point their side doesn’t. The mode’s systems “check active fronts, where the combatants are spawning from,” says Bakken. “We also check where the defenders in their arena are, then give the Invader a safe place to spawn in.” 8. There are four maps for launch For this first hands-on, we’re transported to EDZ’s Emerald Coast, but it won’t be the only locale: Bungie has confirmed there will be four maps for Gambit’s launch. 9. The Drifter is Gambit’s ringmaster & match commentator Tying this activity together, and playing Bungie’s in-universe Gambit architect, is the mysterious Drifter. “I won’t get into his back story,” teases Bakken of the new activity’s host. But he does point out that Gambit exists in a physical space in Destiny 2: Drifter’s ship, which during our hands-on is orbiting Earth. It’s to here your fireteam travels, letting you have an emote-off with the opposing team pre-match, and from here you’ll be transported to the match proper. The Drifter decides what alien race you’ll be fighting pre-match via a random choice and plays commentator during the match. Gambit will launch as part of Forsaken, playable straight away, regardless of a player’s Light level or campaign progress. “We don’t want to be gating it,” Cotten says. “We think it’s really important that people can play with their friends right away.” Unsurprisingly you’ll be able to net unique loot and weapons as you play. “I can’t wait to play this at home,” mutters Destiny 2’s principal producer Scott Taylor mid-match. The comment comes during a strikingly tense second round as both teams are neck and neck for motes. Taylor is hooked just watching. After an all-too brief hands-on, I’ve an itch to don my Titan garb once more and dive straight back in. Roll on September 4th. View the full article

  19. Hello, PlayStation nation! In making games, it’s hard to think of a moment more thrilling and nerve-wracking than when you reveal the first glimpse of the game you’re working on. We’re happy and proud to share this moment with you now with Control, the latest Remedy game in the making which will be published by 505 Games. We know you love single-player games with deep stories and worlds, so it was a special honor for us to be able to globally premiere the trailer at PlayStation’s E3 Showcase. This is only the beginning… So what is Control? On the surface, Control is a supernatural action-adventure with a memorable cast of characters and the kind of twisted story you expect from Remedy, and from our Creative Director, Sam Lake. Jesse Faden’s troubled past has led her to New York, to a huge concrete skyscraper known as the Oldest House. Within lies the headquarters of a secretive government agency known as the Federal Bureau of Control. At Remedy, we like to say that things go horribly, horribly wrong. And for Jesse, they really do: the Bureau is invaded by the otherworldly Hiss, a force that corrupts everything in its way and kills the Director of the Bureau. Through mysterious, ritualistic events, Jesse becomes the new Director and sets out to take on the Hiss with newly enhanced supernatural abilities. She also has something called the Service Weapon, a special, supernaturally enhanced gun that only the Director of the Bureau can use, which can change form at her will. If you dig deeper into Control, you will find a gameplay-driven experience that is far less linear than our previous games. A big part of this is the setting of the game, the Oldest House, which you can glimpse in the trailer. The HQ of the Bureau is a strange place of power, a building that is vastly larger inside than its outside appearance would lead you believe, with a shifting floorplan filled with secrets to uncover. Despite her abilities, Jesse won’t have it easy in her new role as the Director. Control is going to be a challenging game, so you’ll have to make use of both your destructive supernatural abilities as well as the transforming Service Weapon to fight back the Hiss. We want to give players a lot of choice on how they approach combat in our gameplay sandbox. We hope this all has you curious about the secrets of the Oldest House. We have a lot lined up for the rest of the year and beyond to give you more info on Control. Finally, I’d like to introduce our community managers who will be supporting Control from a community perspective: Lucas at 505 Games and Vida at Remedy. Lucas will be in the comments below to answer questions you might have — let us know what you thought of the trailer! View the full article
  20. Hello, PlayStation fans. This is Masaaki Yamagiwa from Japan Studio. Déraciné is an all new adventure game that brings Japan Studio, FromSoftware and director Hidetaka Miyazaki together for the first time since Bloodborne. The story unfolds in a secluded boarding school where six children quietly spend their days. It is into this environment that you appear, an unseen faerie existing in a world of frozen time. As the story progresses, time shifts around you, at times even throwing you into the past. Our goal as we develop this title is to use the latest in VR technology to create a traditional adventure game or visual novel where the user explores a quiet world teeming with mysteries. Déraciné’s most important element is the bond between the player, an unseen faerie, and the children of the boarding school. This is shown using fragmented storytelling, where the user pieces events together from scattered story elements, and a setting where time is frozen. All of this comes together in a compelling, emotional narrative. I also have a special message from Miyazaki himself: “This title got its start when I asked myself whether I could recreate the classic adventure game with its relaxed pace in virtual reality, giving users an entirely unique experience. SIE was interested, and I am very grateful to have them as a partner as we develop this game together. “The result is that the concept behind the title has changed little since those initial thoughts, and Déraciné has a warm, peculiar feel to it that is completely different from anything we have done before. I’d love for as many users as possible to give it a try.” Déraciné is scheduled to release exclusively for PlayStation VR in 2018. PlayStation VR is not for use by children under the age of 12. PlayStation 4 system, PlayStation VR and PlayStation Camera are required to experience VR functionality. View the full article
  21. It’s been quite an E3 for Kingdom Hearts III. It all began on Saturday, where at a sold out Kingdom Hearts Orchestra event in Los Angeles, series creator Tetsuya Nomura revealed that the long awaited release date for Kingdom Hearts III is January 29, 2019. Since there, there have been trailers that have revealed that the world of Disney’s Frozen would be coming to the adventure, as well as a trailer that provided hints about Organization XIII’s machinations and the reveal of Ratatouille joining Kingdom Hearts. Now at PlayStation’s E3 Showcase, an all-new trailer revealed Pirates of the Caribbean making a stunningly beautiful (for real—check out all the clothing textures!) return to Kingdom Hearts. Captain Jack Sparrow, Elizabeth Swann, Will Turner, Hector Barbossa, Tia Dalma, and Joshamee Gibbs are all rendered in photorealistic detail. Of course, Sora, Donald, and Goofy arrive in the world dressed in their appropriate pirate costumes. The trailer shows high-seas ship combat on the Black Pearl, but Sora also takes the battle underwater and through the skies as he fights the Heartless and other monstrosities! Additionally, Organization XIII members are back with their shadowy plans, and on the hunt for a mysterious box. Stay tuned for more news on Kingdom Hearts III as we get closer to launch on January 29. View the full article

  23. A bizarre incident occurred on the outskirts of an American suburb called Raccoon City. A grisly occurrence in the secluded Spencer mansion in the Arklay Mountains quickly transformed the urban metropolis into a living nightmare for both residents and visitors alike. Now, 20 years after the original release of Resident Evil 2, it’s time to return to Raccoon City. The remake of Resident Evil 2 is coming to PlayStation 4 in January 2019! A History of Survival Horror The original 1998 PlayStation game is fondly remembered by people all over the world. Iterating on the groundbreaking survival horror ideas introduced in the original Resident Evil, the sequel brought the terrifying zombies, strange bio organic weapons (or B.O.W.s), and dangerous secrets of the Spencer Mansion to Raccoon City as a horrifying virus infected the populace, turning the vibrant metropolis into a desolate wasteland of the undead. Thanks to the power of the PlayStation, a world of horror awaited players who dared to brave the streets of the decaying city and explore the depths of the Raccoon City Police Department and beyond in a desperate bid to escape. Simply put, without PlayStation, there wouldn’t be Resident Evil! The original 1998 release on PlayStation went on to become one of Capcom’s best-selling games of all time, and there are a lot of memories wrapped up in what makes the game so special: Frantically navigating the streets to get to the R.P.D., a hulking monstrosity smashing through walls, a first encounter with one of the game’s horrifying ‘Licker’ enemies, or just a moment to exhale as the calming safe room music starts to play. To fans around the world, this is where their journey with Resident Evil and survival horror truly began. Then and Now While Resident Evil 2 was initially announced as a remake, there’s a lot more going on here than simply recreating the original game. The powerful RE Engine that was used to bring Resident Evil 7 biohazard to terrifying life is also now powering Resident Evil 2. Rain-soaked streets are lit by the faintest street lights, highlighting the damp clothing and skin of the living and the undead alike, while the grotesque zombies that roam the roads and the moonlit corridors of the R.P.D. show disturbingly lifelike decay and rot on their bodies. Every detail about the city and its inhabitants has been rebuilt from the ground up with photorealistic graphics. Resident Evil has never looked better. If you know the classic Raccoon City Police Department like the back of your hand, some parts of the station might look familiar, but don’t let the similarities fool you. While many of the locations may look similar in design to the one in the original game, this museum-turned-police station is full of surprises for both seasoned veterans and newcomers alike. Various puzzles to solve and completely new areas to explore await those who dare to set foot inside the expansive building. With a new over-the-shoulder camera offering a different perspective on the cramped passageways and massive foyer, you’ll need to keep your wits about you if you want to survive the nightmares that lurk around every corner. Fans might remember that a particularly close-range shotgun blast in the original game could literally blast zombies in half, and that visceral, desperate feeling of combat is still present. Claustrophobic corridors will keep you on your toes, and with each shot that connects, zombies will show damage in real-time, adding a new level of gore to combat. Combined with an over-the-shoulder camera to keep you immersed in the world and limited spaces to hold your items, you might just find yourself playing with the lights on. The stories of Leon and Claire, two characters that have become key figures in the Resident Evil storyline, will be retold, too. Leon S. Kennedy is a rookie cop who finds himself tied up in the madness of Raccoon City when he reports in for the world’s worst first day on the job, while Claire Redfield is a street savvy college student who defies the danger of the city as she searches for her brother, Chris. Both characters will be playable through separate storylines, each bringing with them a unique perspective on the game’s events as their paths intertwine to tell the complete tale of Resident Evil 2, including familiar faces and story elements and extra modes from the original 1998 release. Making It Happen From the very beginning, we’ve been excited to show you what Resident Evil 2 has in store for both veterans and newcomers alike, and devoted fans have expressed their enthusiasm for this remake of the 1998 original in a variety of ways. From the initial announcement that “WE DO IT” to the reveal of Resident Evil 2 here at E3, it’s been incredible to see the passion and love that people have for the game. It’s been over two years since we initially revealed that Resident Evil 2 was going into production, and a major reason why this game exists is because of fan feedback worldwide. It simply wouldn’t have happened without all of you making your desires known, and all of us at Capcom can’t wait to share this long-awaited remake of Resident Evil 2 with all of you next January. Welcome to Raccoon City Both long-time veterans of the franchise and those who are new to the series will have a lot to look forward to with Resident Evil 2. The RE Engine brings the city to life in a whole new way, offering a fresh take on Claire and Leon’s stories of desperate survival. Veteran fans will get to explore a game they love with incredible visual fidelity, new twists and turns, and a new way to play, while newcomers will get to experience what made the original so special in the hearts of so many. Raccoon City is ready to welcome you with open arms on January 25, 2019. View the full article
  24. Hey everyone, Wow, what a PlayStation E3 Showcase! That was an intense and heart-pounding evening, and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we appreciated being a part of it. We absolutely love working with the Marvel Universe and its amazing characters … and as you’ll see in the new gameplay video we showed this evening – our roster of characters in the game just expanded … a lot. Our team is thrilled to finally show you more of what you’ll be up against in Marvel’s Spider-Man. Things heat up for Spider-Man as many of the Super Villains he has put away over his eight years as Spidey have escaped simultaneously. This is a pivotal moment in the game, where the fragile peace in New York City has now been completely shattered, as Super Villains have now escaped the maximum-security facility, the RAFT, just off the coast of Manhattan. Worse, as you saw at the end of the gameplay video, Spider-Man is no match on his own in the one vs. five situation. These are dire times in Marvel’s New York City. We spent a ton of time working with our friends at Marvel Games to ensure we got characters like Rhino, Scorpion, Vulture, and Electro just right. Those four join Mister Negative as five villains in our game cooperating with the mysterious sixth villain that Spider-Man sees just before the end of the gameplay video. They all showed off brand new, original, and more powerful versions of their suits. These designs were careful collaborations to create familiar but fresh takes on the characters. We hope you enjoyed another taste of one of our blockbuster action moments in Marvel’s Spider-Man. This week we’re also letting everyone at the show swing around a section of our Manhattan, stopping crime, completing research tasks for Harry Osborn, infiltrating and shutting down enemy bases, and even coming face-to-face with Shocker himself in a climactic boss battle. Everyone here at Insomniac is working hard to finish the game and ensure it lives up to your expectations on September 7, 2018. You can pre-order now – which gets you an early unlock of a Spidey Suit Pack, the Spider-Drone gadget, skill points to spend immediately on your skill tree, as well as a PS4 theme and PSN avatar. For those attending E3 – they can get a copy of the Daily Bugle that’s ripped from the world of Marvel’s Spider-Man the day after the RAFT Breakout. Even if you don’t snag that though, we have an additional Daily Bugle series that will be posted on the Marvel’s Spider-Man web page that shares some of the events that occur in the lead-up to the beginning of Marvel’s Spider-Man. Check back every month through September for new digital issues! That’s all for now – for all the latest from Marvel’s Spider-Man at E3, check out our Twitter, Instagram and Facebook pages! 25. This latest E3 2018 trailer is the fourth for Death Stranding. The first teaser was released two years ago at E3 2016, with the second and third appearing at TGA 2016 and 2017. Death Stranding | Gallery Work on the first teaser started shortly after establishing Kojima Productions. At the time we were working out of a temporary office, recruiting was still ongoing, there wasn’t enough equipment to fit the bill and the game engine was still up in the air. We really had next to nothing. What we did have, however, was our bond (strand) with Norman Reedus, who immediately accepted the role as our main protagonist, and the idea of the game in my mind. Relying on just these two things, the teaser was created with my own hands in only two and a half months. I still remember the emotion I felt when, after 2 absent years, I was greeted by your warm welcome of cheers and the thunderous claps at the E3 reveal. At TGA 2016, we revealed the appearances of Mads Mikkelsen and my dear friend Guillermo del Toro in the game, in addition to our decision to use the DECIMA engine, which we are developing with Guerrilla Games. Then at TGA 2017, we showed you a cut scene from the early part of our game. As is the case for our latest trailer, all the scenes shown so far are directly from the game. This, of course, includes the scene where Sam (Norman) wakes naked on the beach surrounded by stranded whales, crabs and fish. When we revealed the first teaser, I said that “the game has already begun – a game of unravelling the mysteries of what kind of game Death Stranding will become”. There are some answers to the questions I posed two years ago hidden in this trailer. These are for you, the fans who have shown your tremendous ability to imagine, search for clues and wrack your brains to solve the mysteries. But, the answers here are still only part of the mystery. Our game is still in play. For this trailer, we’re showing quite a bit of gameplay (although the camera angle is altered in some spots). The first half and the last sequence in particular are most representative of the actual gameplay. There are some answers here too, as well as a chance to discover new mysteries. Some might have already picked up on this, but Sam is unlike any other hero you may have seen in games before. A typical hero is usually some sort of elite or someone with a military background. Sam is not. He is a working man of sorts — a hands-on professional. Someone with a skillset akin to a blue-collar worker. This is something you’ll intuitively understand once you play the game and control Sam. Herein lies our challenge, to create both a new form of gameplay and a hero that has never been done before. We also finally revealed our heroines. Two goddesses, Lindsay Wagner and Léa Seydoux. As you know, Léa is a world class actress from France. I’ve seen many of her films, but the film that made me a fan was Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. I was sniped by her aura as the female assassin. And I’ve grown to like her even more through our work together. Her intelligence and knowledge, her elegance and beauty, she is without a doubt a true French treasure. As for Lindsay, she holds a very special and irreplaceable place in my heart. She charmed the world with her role as Jaime Sommers in The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman. I was in my teens in the 70’s, and like viewers across the globe, I fell in love, and continue to be in love with her. She is a muse for all time. Out of necessity for our game, we undertook the process of recreating Lindsay’s younger self from her recent 3D scan data. Of course, some team members are too young to have seen her films or shows when they originally aired, but when I showed them Two People, The Paper Chase, The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman for reference, the whole office fell in love. Her charm transcends time and generations. There are other cast members who we have yet to be revealed, but to be able to announce the two heroines of our game makes me happier than I can say. All of the cast who have been revealed to date, including Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen, are people who I grew very fond of, and had a strong desire to work with. Having fallen for them, I pulled some strings (strands), and asked them to be in my game. I wasn’t motivated by marketing or sales, but simply driven by my creative inspiration. They’ve joined because they feel the same way, and as a result we’ve all grown closer, connected by our special bond. Although it wasn’t my initial intention, we now have a cross-generational, international cast. Mads, who is from Denmark, is a Nordic treasure; Norman is one of the most recognized American actors today, Lea is a top French actress and Lindsay is a muse from the golden 20th century. Across countries, time and generations, we have come together to realize this vision. Coincidentally, this theme is strongly connected with that of the game, and is a theme I strive to realize as a game creator. I want to deliver something for people around the world that transcends generations. I want all people to experience the entertainment medium of games, not only gamers, but fans of film, novels, comics, music and art. With the help of the bond (strand) we have with these four cast members (and those who we have yet to reveal), I believe that we will make this a reality. A serendipitous bond (strand) formed between myself and SILENT POETS, whose song is featured in the trailer. We had a number of performance capture sessions in Japan, and met some amazing people who were part of the catering staff. Not only was the food exceptional, their hospitality was outstanding. We, of course, requested their service many more times. One day, we found out that one of their members was a veteran musician. When we started talking, we learned that they were about to release an album for the first time in 12 years. When I listened to the sample they gave me, an image of Sam walking in the wilderness naturally popped into my head. It was the song Asylums for the Feeling from the album Dawn. Low Roar, whose song was featured in our first teaser, were also a chance discovery I made in a CD shop in Iceland, where I immediately fell in love with their sound. This game is being woven together through numerous strands and human connections, including strands with you: the fans.
