  1. The Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Private Multiplayer Beta premieres exclusively on PlayStation 4 today! Pre-order the game from PlayStation Store or a participating retailer* and jump in to experience gritty, grounded, fluid Multiplayer combat ahead of the launch on October 12! To give you a boost on the battlefield, the team at Treyarch put together the following five tips that could help keep you alive as you face off against a field of foes. Each Specialist has unique equipment and weaponry that they can utilize, there are new gameplay systems at work, and even new gameplay modes to learn. Study up, because knowledge is power, and we’ll see you in the Beta! HEALTH Players in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 have more health overall, along with the added ability to choose when they want to refill their health bar. This is a new mechanic for Call of Duty, so concentrate on nailing it in your first few matches. Soon you’ll be strategizing on when to hit L1 to inject yourself with a health boost. However, pay attention to the cooldown period between uses, and plan wisely. CONTROL Control is a brand-new, objective-based mode. In this mode, teams alternate between attacking and defending two objectives. Each team has a pool of 25 lives to draw from and can win rounds not only by Controlling points on the map, but also by draining the opposing team’s lives. The first team to win three rounds wins, so be sure to keep an eye on the objectives, and on the number of lives. OPERATOR MODS AND UNIQUE ATTACHMENTS Each gun in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has its own unique Attachment Tree, and most have Operator Mods, which are new to Call of Duty. These Operator Mods can push a weapon’s capabilities even further. For example, the Auger DMR Tactical Rifle’s Operator Mod is Burst Accelerator – each burst fires progressively faster while the trigger is held down. Just be aware that you’ll need to equip the Primary or Secondary Operator Mod wildcard, which will unlock the Operator Mod slot. That will cost one Pick 10 point, and the Mod itself will cost two, for a total of three points. SPECIAL ISSUE EQUIPMENT The Pick-10 system is back in Black Ops 4, allowing you to choose a total of 10 items for your loadout. However, it’s worth noting that Special Issue Equipment does not count against that total. That means items you can equip Ruin’s Grapple Gun, Seraph’s Tac Deploy, or Firebreak’s Reactor Core, and still have 10 slots at your disposal for attachments, perks, and more. DIFFERENT MODES, DIFFERENT TEAM In objective-based modes, teams are limited to one specific Specialist per team. That means two players on the same team can’t use the same Specialist. However, in Chaos modes (Team Deathmatch and Kill Confirmed), teams can take up to two of the same Specialist per side, and the maximum number of players is increased to six per team, making these matches 6v6. So, you could stack up your side with two Ruins, two Recons, and two Seraphs to truly create some Chaos. There’s a lot to experience in the Black Ops 4 Private Multiplayer Beta, and we’ve just scratched the surface with these tips. Be sure to experiment with all of the different Specialists, try out their Special Issue Equipment and Special Issue Weaponry, mix and match with the Pick 10 system, try out new modes, and above all… good luck and have fun! *MP Beta starts August 3, 2018 on PS4 system. Actual platform availability and launch date(s) of MP and Blackout Beta subject to change. See www.callofduty.com/beta for more details. Minimum Beta duration is 3 days. Limited time only, while beta codes last, at participating retailers. Internet connection required. View the full article

  4. Picture this: you’re a star NFL wide receiver. The play is called in the endzone. You run the route, the ball soars through the air towards you, you’ve just scored a touchdown. What do you do? If the answer wasn’t do a celebration dance, you’re not cut out for the NFL. What’s the point of success on the field if it isn’t accompanied by an elaborate, meme-able celebration? Madden NFL 19 is bringing more celebrations from the NFL into the game than ever before. Watch the videos below to see how we captured them in the mocap studio and how the final versions look in the game. JuJu Smith-Schuster: Kamehameha Wave Important distinction: this celebration is a Kamehameha Wave from Master Roshi’s Turtle School, not a Hadouken from Street Fighter. There’s been a lot of debate (not really) about this on the internet and we had to set the record straight. Look at Juju’s stance, the way he brings his hands together to channel his chi/the football. Textbook Kamehameha. Rating: 10/10, would successfully keep Vegeta from destroying Earth Green Bay Packers: Bobsled Now, everything we know about bobsledding comes from Lolo Jones’ Snapchat and the 1993 Oscar-worthy film, Cool Runnings. All this is to say, we don’t know much about bobsledding. But much like in Cool Runnings, experience doesn’t matter—what’s important is heart. That’s what the Packers showed with their bobsledding celebration. A true inspiration for all to behold. Rating: 4/4, would set world record for NFL Bobsled League Marshawn Lynch: Get Stupid This will need further explanation for the less hip among us. See, Marshawn Lynch is from the Bay, Oakland to be specific. Without Oakland, we wouldn’t have slang like hyphy, hella, and yee. Needless to say, in the Bay Area, they dance a little different. What you see here is not teachable. The way Marshawn is moving to Get Stupid by Bay Area luminary Mac Dre cannot be found in YouTube tutorials. This isn’t the Cupid Shuffle or the Cha Cha slide. This is Oakland. Rating: 510/510, would Thizzle Dance at First Fridays View the full article
  5. Earlier today, Telltale Games launched The Walking Dead: The Final Season Story Builder, an interactive, browser-based experience that allows you to relive the series’ most impactful choice moments. Your choices in the Story Builder produce a unique version of Clementine which can then be imported into the game itself, in place of a save file. In honor of the Story Builder, season lead writer James Windeler decided to look back at Clem’s most formative moments and explain how the final chapter in Clementine’s story first took shape. When we first met Clem all those years ago, she was a sweet eight-year-old girl talking to us over her walkie talkie. Though she’s introduced to us as the epitome of innocence, she’s clearly smart as well, taking refuge in her treehouse where walkers can’t reach her. She’s also brave enough to come to Lee’s aid with a hammer during a near-fatal fight with her undead babysitter. Even then, she showed the survival instincts that have kept her alive longer than almost everyone else she’s encountered in the years since. Of course, she was small, alone, and in need of someone to take care of her. And we were there, as Lee, to fill that role. In The Final Season, Clementine is all grown up. She’s now a hardened, capable survivor who’s been on the road for some years travelling with AJ, an orphaned boy she took charge of at the end of Season Two. Clementine owed so much to Lee, the team thought the final chapter of her story needed to involve her repaying some of that colossal debt by passing her knowledge on. She started as a tiny, innocent, utterly dependent child. For us, it was natural and inevitable that she come full circle and step into Lee’s shoes. A New Kind of Mentor While we wanted to honor the starting point of Clem’s story, we were determined not to mimic it. AJ is nothing like Clem when she was little. He’s a child who has known only life in the post-apocalypse, and as a team, we were excited to explore how a kid born in that world would behave. Strong and dexterous beyond his years, he can forage for food and handle a gun. Dealing with walkers is second nature to him, as is being wary of strangers. In contrast to young Clementine, AJ really needs guidance in the ethical realm more than anywhere else. The world before the apocalypse, with all its social mores, is a distant memory, and the question is no longer simply “Will we live or not?” It’s also “What is the right way to live?” As Clementine makes difficult, sometimes brutal decisions, AJ watches her, forming a fledgling sense of right and wrong. In our most grandiose moments, the team frames the story as a battle for AJ’s soul. But we also put the player in charge of more child-like aspects of AJ’s growth, like whether or not he should be allowed to use foul language. We know that little, well-behaved Season One Clem would say, “Swear!” But what about adult Clem in the final chapters of her story? Even though Clem adopts Lee’s role as mentor, she’s very different from him. Whereas Lee’s backstory existed in a world before the apocalypse, Clem’s has been shaped by players over the course of years of hard survival. In The Final Season, players define her character in the present, roleplaying her as compassionate or dark or sassy, depending on how they see their version of Clem. But they also pick up with a character who has suffered a great deal and learned she can rely on no one but herself. To me, when she says goodbye to Lee at the end of Season One, Clem also says goodbye to childhood and to dependence on others. Through no fault of his own, Lee abandons her to this hideous world, and she is forced to carry on alone. Later, she loses another dear friend, Kenny, unable to stop his breakdown into madness. Most of the other adults prove to be unreliable at best and homicidal tyrants at worst, so by the time Clem holds Javi up at gunpoint early on in The Walking Dead: A New Frontier, she’s hardened, violent, and indifferent to the needs of those around her. She’s driven by single-minded obsession to find the one person that won’t let her down: little baby AJ. The Long Road Home For the concluding season of Clem’s story, we really wanted to move her character forward from what might be described as the bitterly angry adolescence of A New Frontier and explore what fully-grown Clem might want. Though the search for AJ once offered a powerful engine for her character, we wanted to move away from that as a goal. To that end, we had Clem find AJ in the gap between seasons, leaving their reunion as a traumatic memory to be touched on during The Final Season. And since Clementine had been running for a very long time, it felt right that she’d be exhausted, at the end of her rope, and looking for somewhere to finally call home. As we thought about what that home might look like, the team became convinced it should feel different from all the other communities Clem has seen fail. Ericson’s Boarding School for Troubled Youth is distinct in that there are no adults in sight. The teenagers that live there — though they’ve survived this long — are relatively sheltered, and when crisis threatens their idyll, they look to Clem for answers. Time and again through the series, Clementine has been a child or an outsider in a harsh adult world. In her final chapter, we wanted to give Clem a chance to define her own home, to fight for it, and to become a leader in her own right. Episode one of The Walking Dead: The Final Season will be available for download starting August 14. Pre-order before August 14 and receive The Walking Dead Collection as a free pre-order bonus. 6. Hi PlayStation nation, I’m really excited to announce that State of Mind will be available to pre-order starting tomorrow! Today, I want to talk to you about what transhumanism means and how it relates to the game. Generally speaking, transhumanists believe that humanity’s technological development is exponential and we are inches away from the event transhumanists call Singularity. Singularity presumably marks the point when artificial intelligence surpasses that of the human mind. After that point, many fantastic and incredible things will happen very quickly. We will transform into a new form of beings, a new kind of humanity. We will be masters of the material world surrounding us. Super intelligences will be created; humans and AIs will merge. We will be able to upload our minds, defeat poverty and illness, create artificial life and change our bodies and even forms of existence like clothes. Abundance, perfection, immortality. These are the bullet points of transhumanism and if these sound like religious promises to you, you make the right assumption because transhumanism is essentially exactly that: the promise of paradise in the guise of technology. What could possibly go wrong? This is what we want to investigate in State of Mind. What if the fantastic technologies which transhumanism promises are not available for everyone? Maybe the people with access have different visions and intentions regarding humanity’s future, and maybe perfection is a tempting prospect or a dreadful threat depending on individual perspective. This is why the central character in our narrative is someone whose life is less than perfect: Richard Nolan, a technology skeptic journalist living in the year 2048. Richard would probably not be considered a nice guy. Maybe he isn’t even a great father. Richard is a human — with all the problems and contradictions that package contains. And that is just what makes him the right kind of character to tackle the questions inherent to transhumanism: where are the cracks between the layers of reality and fiction, between truth and deception, between artificial and biological life? What could be the reasonable downside to paradise? We send Nolan on a trip through a world one step away from transhumanist revolution. We literally take everything away from him, even a part of his identity, so we can find out together what he’s made of and what is actually important to him. Richard must deal with humanoid bots, artificial humans, and anti-tech terrorists. Last but not least, he must face his own shortcomings: his mistakes, flaws, bad calls, and lies. All this is what makes him human. But is being human desirable? Which side has the better arguments eventually? Isn’t it more desirable to be “more than human” after all? We hope that State of Mind is a game that will not provide an easy answer to these questions. View the full article
  7. The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs Expansion Pack* is ready for its PlayStation 4 debut, and it’s about to get weird. If you want it to, that is. With this pack, you can create posh poodles, goofy German Shepherds, and terrific Tabby cats. But you can also get pretty experimental. Enter the mashup — the mixing of a few elements to create something beautiful, outrageous, or even gross. Picture this: your Sim is coming home after a long day working at the vet clinic. Her feet are killing her. She’s hungry, cranky, and all the other post-work adjectives we’re too familiar with. But there’s a little twinkle in her eye, because your Sim knows who’s waiting for her at home. That’s right, it’s a pastel-colored unicorn dog. Wait, what? That can’t be right! Oh, but it can. With a little something called the paint tool in The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs Expansion Pack. Not only does this Pack offer cats, dogs, a veterinarian clinic, and a new world, you can cross-breed and customize every inch of your furry friends! Is your Sim more of a feline fan? Well, we’ve got ’em covered. In spots! You can paint your Sims down to every whisker in whatever way you like. Really. Can’t stress this enough. Let your creativity run as wild as this cat. And just to be clear, that glowing red nose means our little buddy is not feeling so well. Which means it’s time to take a trip to the vet, and the perfect moment to show off your creative cat to other Sims in the neighborhood. Ready for some rainbow-inspired pet mashups? The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs releases tomorrow on PS4. *Requires The Sims 4 game (sold separately) and all game updates to play. View the full article
  8. Today, we’re excited to reveal the latest free content update for GT Sport, packed with gorgeous new cars, a stunning new track (with three unique layouts), GT League events, and much more. Plus, we’re soon making over 200 of GT Sport’s vehicles available to purchase from PS Store and Brand Central as DLC. The 1.23 update is available to download right now, and you can check out the full patch notes at gran-turismo.com. Downloadable Content While there are many car enthusiasts young and old among Gran Turismo’s players, there are many who don’t have enough time to play and save the in-game credits needed to acquire their favorite cars. By making cars immediately available to purchase as DLC, we hope to make it so that players busy with work (or those who’ve just entered the world of GT) can acquire attractive and competitive cars quickly, and take their position on the starting grid. However, to keep things fair and balanced for our existing players, all cars can still be purchased with in-game credits as before; there are no cars that are only available for cash, and nothing will change in the way you currently earn cars, or the present car system. Furthermore, GT Sport’s priciest vehicles can only be bought with the in-game currency – meaning drivers will still have to prove their ability and effort out on the track to acquire the very best cars on offer. New Vehicles Seven spectacular new vehicles have been added to Brand Central this month, from the historic Mercedes F1 machine that won the championship with Lewis Hamilton behind the wheel, legendary Ferraris, and K-Cars which represent the unique side of Japanese car culture. Take a look at the complete line-up here: Mercedes-AMG F1 W08 EQ Power+ 2017 Daihatsu Copen Active Top ’02 Honda Beat ’91 Honda S660 ’15 Ferrari 250 GTO CN.3729GT ’62 Ford GT LM Spec II Test Car Mazda 787B ’91 New Track – Sainte-Croix Circuit (A / B / C) Based on the scenic Lake of Sainte-Croix in the Provence region of France, this original 10km course (with three distinct layouts) features tricky radial corners, long straights, and requires high driving skill to achieve fast lap times. The track is truly designed to test drivers’ adaptability. Furthermore, all three track variants are also playable in reverse, making six unique races possible. GT League Adding to the GT League line-up, we’ve introduced three new events to test drivers of all skill levels, including: Light Weight K Cup – Beginner League Nostalgic Car Festival – Amateur League Mercedes AMG Grand Prix – Professional League Additional Updates Finally, a few additional features have been added to the game. One of the most notable changes is that the Livery Editor that was only available for cars is now compatible with racing suits and helmets. In addition, an update has been added to Scapes Mode to allow players to place driver avatars in their scenes. There is also a new location: Tokyo Outer Ring Road, Chiba. And following last month’s track update, the stunning Circuit de la Sarthe has been added to the Circuit Experience. Remember: you can find all the latest info on upcoming GT Sport content here at PlayStation.Blog or on the official Gran Turismo website. Until next time, drivers, we’ll see you out on the track. 11. When I first came in contact with Richard Hill-Whitall, two things were immediately obvious: he had a deep love and respect for video game history, and he was super passionate about pixel art. It was no surprise to me that he chose to marry these passions into his own creation, a game called Super Life of Pixel. Rich and his small team of “bedroom coders” at Super Icon painstakingly recreated 19 legendary systems spanning three decades of gaming. They paid careful attention to the art styles, technical limitations and the intangible “feel” of each system and their respective eras. Some of these classically inspired consoles you may immediately recognize, and others may be new to you – but they all played an important role in the building of this industry that I love. And besides that, they’re freaking fun! So, when it was proposed that our lil’ old studio, WhiteMoon Dreams be Rich’s publisher and help bring Super Life of Pixel to PS4 and PS Vita, we jumped at the chance. After months of hard work between WhiteMoon Dreams and Super Icon, we are proud to announce that Super Life of Pixel is launching on PS4 and PS Vita on August 22. At its core, this game is a fun history lesson. With every system you conquer and unlock, you’re given the chance to learn more about the original consoles they’re inspired by, down to the hardware and software specs of the era. Consider it a living, playable museum of gaming history, in which you will die. A lot. With that comes some old-school mechanics. Patience and strategy will be your ticket to victory. As Rusty put it to me one day, “In these kinds of games: speed kills, and greed kills.” It’s all about thinking the level through and treating it more like a puzzle platformer. Move, think, jump or die. That’s the Life of Pixel. We’d like to thank our awesome partners at Super Icon and the entire PlayStation family for working with us to bring this experience to you. On August 22, fire up your PS4 or PS Vita and play your part in gaming history, get impaled on sharp things, and jump like your life depends on it in Super Life of Pixel! We can’t wait for the PlayStation community to get their hands on it and to let us know what you think! View the full article
  12. Both PS VR and PlayLink have presented exciting new possibilities for game creators, letting them take a fresh approach to — and even innovate within — well-established genres. This is something that has been front-of-mind for two developers hard at work on projects for these platforms: London Studio with PS VR’s Blood & Truth, Flavourworks with PlayLink’s Erica. Both promise to change the design rulebook for their respective genres. For the former, it’s an action-packed yet narrative-driven crime drama rich with the innovative setpieces only possible in PS VR. Meanwhile, the latter gives players control over real-world actors in a branching story that offers seamless live-action transitions as on-screen characters react to minute-to-minute decisions made via the player’s mobile device. Innovation was central to the conversation between London Studio’s Stuart Whyte and Jack Attridge from Flavourworks as the two sat down to discuss their respective approaches to game design. From appreciation of the platforms’ input (the physicality of PS VR, the tactile interactions of PlayLink), to unique takes that acknowledge genre greats (John Wick, Quantic Dream) the talk makes for informative viewing. 13. We’re overjoyed to announce that Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum Session is coming to PS4 on November 2, 2018! The game will feature iconic songs from Neon Genesis Evangelion, Disney favorites including Frozen and Zootopia, and tracks from Kemono Friends, Osomatsu San, Hatsune Miku, and even Touhou Project. We didn’t forget to include some of our own personal favorite songs from the Tekken series, Tales of Berseria, Ridge Racer, and IdolM@ster! Looking for something more contemporary for your Drum Session? The classical song category is your ticket! Jam out to the likes of Rossini, Offenback, and Carmen. These tracks are a great way to get used to Taiko no Tatsujin’s mechanics and gameplay. The dev team in Japan is also super-pumped to share Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum Session with everyone, so without further ado, here are a couple of messages from Ueda-san, the producer and Sasoaka-san, one of the members of the development team. “Hello everyone, I am the producer for the PS4 version of Taiko no Tatsujin, Ayano Ueda. Taiko no Tatsujin was released in 2001 in Japan as an arcade game. This is the first time that we’re releasing the series in the United States on PS4! “One cool new feature I would like to tell you about is that you’ll be able to battle online with ghost data collected from players all over the world. We’re also including some popular anime songs from Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Attack on Titan, so be sure to check them out when you pick up the game!” –Ayano Ueda “Hello, this is Takehito Sasaoka, a member of the Taiko no Tatsujin development team. It’s been 18 years since Taiko no Tatsujin showed up in arcades in Japan for the first time. “Taiko no Tatsujin” was born with the concept of ‘Anyone can easily enjoy playing Taiko through the rhythm of music.’ Eighteen years later, I hope that everyone in the world enjoys the series and what it represents. Please enjoy and play the game with the kawaii characters including Don-chan!” — Takehito Sasaoka Once again, we’re absolutely delighted to finally release Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum Session in the United States. See you November 2 on PS4 for some incredible drum sessions! View the full article

  15. Hi everyone! Some of you may know that the first game in this trilogy, The Banner Saga, was developed by just three people from the newly formed indie developer, Stoic, back in 2012. It was only after an unexpected and wildly successful Kickstarter campaign that this game experienced its first breath of life. But did you know that these three developers came from a AAA development studio, namely Bioware, and gave it all up to follow their dream? That’s right — they found the courage to leave the ‘high powered’, fast-paced world of big budget video game development based on a conviction that they could build something together, something that they would love to play, something that was of the highest quality as possible for a small indie team and unique and that fans would love to play too. Fast-forward to six years later and that first breath of life has evolved into an award-winning saga of gigantic proportions. A game with a harrowing, thought-provoking and tragic storyline, stunning yet haunting graphics and memorable characters both friend and foe that you actually cared about while playing. Together with Stoic we are proud to bring you the end of this saga with today’s launch of Banner Saga 3, which means you can now play this epic saga from beginning to end and experience your own personal journey through its vast magical world. To recap the story so far, in The Banner Saga you first meet father/daughter duo Rook and Alette who encounter the stone-clad Dredge for the first time and reluctantly flee their home, unwittingly becoming the de facto leader of their caravan. You learn that the world is breaking and the only way to survive is to team up with the mighty Varl, the race of horned giants who are few in numbers but whose worth is demonstrable on the battlefield. You encounter magical menders and other characters along the way — some friend, some enemy, but all with their own motivations. Who can you trust? You start off in Banner Saga 2 realizing the weight of tragedy at the loss of a loved one. While many questions are answered, even more are raised and the desperate struggle for survival becomes even more real. You encounter the mythical horseborn race and warily join forces knowing that coming together in partnership might be the path to a hopeful future. More tough choices are laid at your feet and an even greater threat is unearthed as more tragedy envelops your world. In Banner Saga 3, the end has come. The end is upon you and the world as you know it is on its knees. In these final hours, your courage and grit is put to the test one final time as you try to change the course of fate and save as many lives as you can in the face of impending doom. The success of the Banner Saga trilogy has allowed Stoic to expand from three people in a neighbor’s garage to a fully fledged indie development studio with proper office space, several new hires including artists, programmers and producers and a ton of resources. This indie success story is something we want to see more of and as an indie publisher we strive to nurture and support. So although we are sad that this trilogy is finally coming to a dramatic end, we can’t wait to see what comes out of Stoic in the near future. Watch this space. View the full article
  16. Hi there everyone! I’m here to help you stay alive during your time playing The Persistence. In case you missed our previous blog post, The Persistence is a brutal VR sci-fi stealth-horror roguelike, and it’s coming exclusively to PS VR tomorrow. You are Chief Security Officer Zimri Eder, one of the last surviving members of the crew. Your job is to save The Persistence, and yourself in the process. Saving your ship from being torn apart by a black hole is no small task. You are likely to die — a lot — so here’s some insider information to help you out. Upgrade Your Stuff You can upgrade a lot of things in The Persistence and, as the name suggests, all your upgrades and currency stay with you, you know. Persistently… okay, I’ll stop now. Your first priority should always be upgrading your health, so grab as many Stem Cells as you can and visit the DNA Sequencer. You’ll find it in Recovery each time you print a new clone (i.e. respawn). Once you’ve upgraded your health once or twice, you should start looking at upgrading Dark Matter, which is the stat that allows you to teleport and use Supersense. If you play like I do, these will be used regularly through both combat and stealth to give you an edge over some of the harder enemies. If you’re feeling brave, locate a Supply Crate in a challenge room, as they contain some of the best loot in the game and can help propel you much more quickly to the higher levels. Lock and Load As soon as you are on deck, head to a Firearms Fabricator, and unlock The Needle. On the earlier Decks The Needle is a great weapon to get used to the head-controlled aiming. All firearms give double damage for headshots, so try to stay cool under pressure when taking your shots. Then you should move on to unlocking all the other weapons, and experiment with them to find your favorites. You’ll also get yourself a trophy once you’ve got them all! At later levels, you will find that some of the early game firearms just won’t cut it anymore, and you’ll have to transition into more powerful experimental and melee weapons. One of my favorite strategies is upgrading my melee damage stats, unlocking Joe Wilson (a clone with melee damage bonuses), and wading through enemies with a fully upgraded riot baton, which is basically the love child of a club and a taser! Fight on Your Terms The Persistence is tough and, in your roughly eight-hour playthrough, you will come up against some serious challenges. The trick is to take regular stock of your equipment and allow that to determine how you handle encounters. If you have limited resources, then start an area slowly with a stealthy approach. If you’re well equipped, you may want to focus on making your way to Supply Crates, or just head straight to your objective. This is particularly important when it comes to utilizing Armory Fabricators which need to recharge after use, so choose your weapons wisely. The important thing is to remain adaptable, spread the risk and try to unlock multiple weapons so that you can fight multiple threats in one fight. Friends Can Be ‘Helpful’ If you’re struggling (or lonely) you can enlist friends to give you a hand using the companion Solex app for your smartphone. But you’ll need to find someone who can resist the temptation of making your game harder! Good verbal communication with your Solex app partner is key, as they can help you find health packs when you are near death and drop weapons when you’re starting to run dry. One of the best places to enlist your friend’s help is in the stealth phases of the game: your friend can tag enemies so that you can see them through the walls, or drop distractors so that enemies turn their backs to you, leaving them exposed for Stem Cell harvesting. If you do ever suspect your friend of foul play, make your way to a Solex screen on the ship and upload a virus to freeze the app! Optimize Your Playthroughs Like I said before, you will die. A lot. But this is your opportunity to come back stronger, and optimize your future runs. Getting a Loot Suit, and combining it with specialist clones such as Serena, will give you huge boosts to each loot drop, especially on lower decks. A few optimized runs will give you enough resources for high-level upgrades or to unlock epic-level schematics. If you have one, I recommend fabricating an epic forcefield, which will keep you alive when battling high level Weepers and Berserkers. My final tip is that you can optimize your runs by finding Deck Modules. These will allow you to teleport straight from Recovery to the lower decks. They are tough to get, as they’re only found in Supply Crates. You will see Supply Crates marked on the map, but each has a challenge you must complete before you can get them open! If you follow this insider information, you’ll stand a great chance of surviving The Persistence, which is available July 25 in stores, and to download from PlayStation Store tomorrow. 17. Hi! I’m José A. Gutiérrez, the Creative Director of a small Spanish indie developer called Teku Studios. I’d like to tell you about our first game, Candle: The Power of the Flame. It is a 2D adventure and we’ve been working on it for a few years now. I’m so excited that PS4 gamers will finally be able to enjoy it. In the game you take on the guise of little Teku. After an attack on his village, he’s forced to undertake a dangerous journey to rescue his tribe’s shaman. Equipped with just a candle and his wit, he’ll have to overcome numerous dangers, traps and puzzles to achieve his goal. As a player, you will live a fascinating adventure, but today I want to talk to you about a different adventure: the one that we had developing Candle. Looking for something special Looking at the images of Candle you may have noticed that it looks really quite unique, right? This is because all the graphics have been completely hand-painted with watercolors. The final result is fantastic but, believe me, production has been absolute madness. So why did we decide to create a video game painted with watercolors? To answer, let’s travel back to 2012, when I was a student of Fine Arts. I got together with a fellow student who was learning to program. Being fans of video games, we wanted to make our own. As an artist, I have always been fascinated by the conceptual art that goes on behind video games. Sometimes, I prefer this art to the graphics in the final game itself! This made me wonder to what extent it would be possible to make a game that looked exactly like those concept illustrations. As a result, we decided that Candle: The Power of the Flame should be painted using traditional techniques. A really unique and complicated process The visual aspect of Candle evolved a lot from our initial tests. At first, the game was painted with acrylics and had a much darker and decadent appearance, almost like a horror game. As we were designing the characters and the world of Teku, the game’s sense of humor imposed itself and we decided to make a radical change. Using watercolor is a very clean technique and it allowed us to give the game a more colorful, cheerful and vibrant look. It also became a real challenge for us – painting thousands of watercolors, both scenarios and animations. The sheer quantity was only one challenge we faced, another was that all the paintings needed to fit correctly together and not confuse the player when they were in motion! Painting with watercolors can be a complicated technique, requiring a lot of practice and patience. Unlike with oils or acrylic you cannot correct an error by painting over it (and of course, you can’t use Ctrl+Z to undo mistakes). What’s more, to paint a single stage could take more than twice the time it would normally take if we had used digital tools. Candle Art Gallery The process required careful planning, as each piece of the game’s levels had to be painted separately, then integrated into Unity. Unlike in Photoshop, you can’t have the rest of the layers as referencing. We wondered why nobody had tried to create a game with traditional techniques before… well, now we knew the answer! Another major complication was traditional animation. For this, each animation was drawn in pencil on a light table, frame by frame. After that, each frame was traced to watercolor paper and painted separately. This is a slow and complicated process, especially if you have never animated before. In order to create Candle’s animations, I had to practice for several months. I often threw away everything I had been working on, starting over until I got a result that convinced me. Was it worth it? Absolutely! It is difficult to describe how we felt seeing Candle: The Power of the Flame on PS4 for the first time. All those watercolors had suddenly come to life. It was a living, breathing painting. On screen you could see all the spots, and even the texture of the paper. The animations, due to the artisanal process, were not perfect and in a certain way they “vibrated.” We think that these imperfections make the whole thing look even better, especially on a 4K TV – the characters stood out from the scene and they were easily locatable and felt alive. Just remember, the watercolors in Candle: The Power of the Flame are not just there to be pretty. Many of the puzzles are designed so that you have to carefully observe the landscape and its inhabitants for clues. We really hope you enjoy this experience that we have created when Candle: The Power of the Flame becomes available on July 26. View the full article

  20. Just revealed at the Resident Evil panel at San Diego Comic-Con, we have a bunch of new information on Resident Evil 2 straight from the game’s producer, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi! Remaking a true classic is no easy feat, but the talented team at Capcom behind the upcoming Resident Evil 2 is certainly up to the challenge. Originally revealed with the “WE DO IT” video that’s become well-known among fans, Hirabayashi explained how this new version of Resident Evil 2 exists because of overwhelming fan demand. This is not just a remake – it’s a complete redesign of Resident Evil 2, including the iconic Raccoon City Police Department and the surrounding Raccoon City. Speaking of, one of the topics covered was Leon’s younger look in Resident Evil 2. Compared to later entries, the goal was to give him more of a fresh-faced rookie look in contrast to the hero that he becomes later on in the series. Famous for having one of the worst first days on the job in history (they cancelled his welcoming party and everything), a lot of thought was put into how Leon’s new, yet classic, look would work with modern photorealistic graphics. As a result, the team created a physical version of Leon’s costume, using photogrammetry technology to scan his clothes into the game and added minor details and changes afterwards. Resident Evil 2 isn’t complete without Claire, our hero who comes to Raccoon City searching for her brother Chris. Claire’s updated design uses the same technology, scanning in a real-world costume to capture every last detail of her outfit. The team had quite a bit of discussion on how to design her new look, and how much of it should retain her appearance from the original PlayStation Resident Evil 2. Ultimately, the team decided on an appearance that would line up with the iconic scene of Claire entering Raccoon City on her motorcycle. The team is extremely happy with her final design, and hope you all enjoy it as well! For the city itself, the team put a major focus on two concepts that permeate throughout the game: A sense of wetness, and playing off a fear of the dark. Using the powerful RE Engine, the team has been able to achieve their goal of creating a sense of dread through these visual cues. The events ofˆResident Evil 2 take place on a rainy day in Raccoon City, causing puddles and flooding in parts of the city, while others areas are covered in the grotesque aftermath of clashes with the undead and other terrors lurking in the gloom. Finally, it’s not Resident Evil 2 without zombies! Hirabayashi and the team discussed how they designed the scourge of undead in the remake. Simply put, they wanted to create something monstrous that you didn’t want to be bitten by! To that end, zombies have been created with the same concepts of wetness and darkness in mind, ensuring that every encounter is just as tense as the one before. Also revealed at the panel, we’ve got fresh details on a special Resident Evil 2 Collector’s Edition for North America, available at GameStop and EB Games! Packed up in a box that looks just like the iconic item boxes from Resident Evil 2, this edition boasts a 12″ figure of Leon, art book, costumes, and much more: The Resident Evil 2 Collector’s Edition includes: Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition Full Game Special Deluxe Packaging Extra DLC Pack Card Give Leon and Claire a new look or a blast from the past with unique costumes: Leon Costume: “Arklay Sheriff” Leon Costume: “Noir” Claire Costume: “Military” Claire Costume: “Noir” Claire Costume: “Elza Walker” Ensure the undead stay undead with a special weapon: Deluxe Weapon: “Samurai Edge – Albert Model” And bring on the nostalgia with classic tunes: “Original Version” Soundtrack Swap Leon S. Kennedy (R.P.D. Version) Figure An expertly-crafted 12-inch figure of Leon on his first day in his new RPD police uniform, re-created to mirror his in-game design down to the smallest details. A must-have for any Resident Evil fan or collector! “Ben’s File” Art Book A 32-page book left behind by Ben Bertolucci, a freelance journalist who makes an appearance in Resident Evil 2. This file contains photos and files documenting events after the Raccoon City tragedy, and was filed away as a highly confidential document by the U.S. government. It’s never been seen by the public… until now. Digital Soundtrack A voucher code for a 25-track album featuring new songs from the remake of Resident Evil 2, as well as a selection of arrangements from the original game. “R.P.D.” Renovation Design Poster A diagram reminiscent of blueprints, this poster illustrates how the building was renovated and transformed from a museum to a police facility when work was being done on the building in 1969. Available exclusively at GameStop and EB Games in North America for $199.99 ($239.99 CAD), check with your local store or visit GameStop.com to secure your pre-order! We hope you’ve enjoyed this special look into the Resident Evil panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Raccoon City is ready to welcome you with open arms when Resident Evil 2 comes to PS4 on January 25, 2019. View the full article

  23. It’s hard to believe, but this year marks a full decade since the release of Call of Duty: World at War… and along with it, Treyarch’s very first Zombies experience: Nacht der Untoten. The rest is, as they say, history. With a new Blood of the Dead trailer burbling out of the Comic-Con murk yesterday, we put out the call to PlayStation fans for their questions (I snuck in a few, too) and send them off to Treyarch via carrier pigeon. Though Treyarch is traditionally tight-lipped around Zombies details, Black Ops 4 is shipping with three radically different Zombies experiences on day one… so Zombies Director Jason Blundell graciously pulled back the curtain to give us a peek. Lore Did Shadows of Evil (Call of Duty: Black Ops III) influence the design decisions or flow of any of the new Black Ops 4 Zombies maps? Jason Blundell, Director, Zombies at Treyarch: Shadows was one of the maps where we really tried to challenge expectations – not just regarding time-period and tone, but also through the sheer scale and variety of the environment. More significantly it was also a new cast of characters, so in that sense, Shadows – along with the original Mob of the Dead – was one of the maps that gave us the confidence to take the narrative outside of the Aether timeline. Voyage of Despair – how does this setting and time period fit into the overall Zombies mythos? It seems like quite a departure. JB: I think that’s what’s fun about where we are now with Black Ops 4 Zombies – no longer confined to war-torn environments and grizzled soldiers, we can look at other places and events from history and scratch beneath the surface to explore ancient myths and legends in addition to the more modern ones… IX is probably the biggest departure we could imagine for a Zombies map. How did the concept of a Roman gladiator setting come together? JB: Again – it’s about moving away from traditional battle locations, and into something visually exciting that we’ve never really explored before. Aesthetics aside, there are of course significant narrative reasons why the characters are there, and what that experience will mean for their individual journeys, and for the story as a whole. Is the new story fully disconnected from the Aether story? (via @chromastone10) JB: Yes. The Chaos and Aether stories are completely disconnected from each other. What should we know about each of our four new souls? Are they good? Are they bad? How do they know each other? (via @iSeeBearZ) JB: The new characters are all linked through their respective relationships with an eccentric adventurer called Alistair Rhodes. After he gets into trouble with the game’s antagonists, his daughter Scarlett brings the crew together. As to whether they are good or bad, that’s something we want to leave for the fans to discover. As with a lot of Treyarch’s characters, the answer is never quite that straightforward! What are the differences between Mob of the Dead and Blood of the Dead? (via @ANG3X6__) JB: Aside from being a very different story – one that fills a very specific gap in the Aether timeline – the environment has been significantly expanded, with all-new Easter Eggs and quests. So, while players will encounter elements familiar from the original Mob, they won’t have too much of an advantage when it comes to surviving and uncovering the level’s secrets! Any plans to reintroduce classic weapons from prior games, or will the arsenal largely stick with existing Black Ops 4 weaponry? (asked by countless hordes) JB: As with previous games, the arsenal will be largely drawn from other game modes, but there will be some unique additions made as the season progresses. Do the perk vapors function exactly like perks do, or are they going to function in a new way? (via @Trey50Daniel) JB: The biggest change to perk functionality comes down to customization. In Black Ops 4 zombies, players will be able to choose the perks that will be available at each of the Altar locations prior to starting the level. This will present some interesting strategies, particularly when it comes to co-op. Are there any plans for character customisation in Zombies further than the usual gun customisation? (via @TheBlueSushi) JB: Yes The Mystery Box is a classic Zombies trope. Will it see any new wrinkles for Black Ops 4? JB: Yes. One example I can mention is that it’s now possible to decline taking a weapon from the box, but offer your team mates the opportunity to take it instead. Voyage of Despair seems to introduce class-based characters for the first time — how do the four different characters stack up? What are their strengths and weaknesses? JB: They’re not ‘classes’ as such, as the characters are all capable of the same physical actions, and weapon handling, so the differences really come from their personalities and role in the overall story. On a similar note: will we see new enemy types that play off the different character abilities? JB: Defeating the new enemy types will indeed require different strategies, but those strategies relate to the actual weapons being used, rather than the characters wielding them. Are Denizens returning in Blood of the Dead? (via @NukeHead1) JB: No denizens. Thanks to Ted, they all got run over by a bus Miscellaneous Questions Will Zombies support local splitscreen play? JB: Yes! What work is Treyarch putting into the new bot support? Any design goals you can share? JB: We don’t want the bots to play the game for you, so they won’t solve Easter Eggs! They will however allow everyone to experience dialogue and narrative elements that solo players traditionally miss out on. The Mystery Box Also revealed during Treyarch’s Comic-Con panel yesterday — the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Mystery Box Edition, which comes with a ton of collectible items, a puzzle, Darkhorse Zombies comic, lithographs, Steelbook and more. 24. San Diego Comic-Con kicked off with a bang this Thursday! Everyone here at Insomniac Games was honored to be a part of the Marvel Games panel in the legendary Hall H, a hallowed location for major moments in pop culture history. Pre-order at PlayStation Store As part of the panel, we showed off our latest story trailer, which had a first look at our original take on Silver Sable, a longtime anti-hero popularized in the pages of the Amazing Spider-Man, in our game. And you could finally hear Norman Osborn himself speak! As you saw in the trailer, as events in the city begin to escalate in Marvel’s Spider-Man, Mayor Norman Osborn is willing to take no risks during his re-election bid. He hires Silver Sable and her mercenary organization to restore order to the city – which includes stopping someone he believes is contributing to the mayhem: Spider-Man. We also get to see a glimpse of Spider-Man, MJ, and Miles Morales together for the first time. One of the game’s themes is partnership, and this is a little glimpse showing that Spider-Man is even greater if he relies on help from his friends. We were pleased to introduce some new members of our cast on the game as well. You already know Yuri Lowenthal is playing Spider-Man, but we also introduced Stephen Oyoung as Mister Negative / Martin Li, and Laura Bailey as Mary Jane Watson. Many of you had guessed that the final mystery suit in our Spidey Suit Pack pre-order offering would be revealed at SDCC. We revealed the new Velocity Suit – an original suit for the game that was created by acclaimed comic book artist and film character designer Adi Granov. It joins the Spider-Punk suit and Iron Spider suit (inspired by Marvel Studios’ The Avengers: Infinity War) to round out the set. Here’s all three suits in action, and even if you do not pre-order, you can earn these suits in-game as well. Adi Granov also created a PS4 theme – which is also available as part of the pre-order offering! We’re still putting the finishing touches on the theme, but because we can’t wait to show you, here’s a peek at the art that PS4 theme will use. And if that wasn’t enough news – you may have also heard that we revealed the Marvel’s Spider-Man Limited Edition PS4 Pro in Amazing Red, which features the iconic spider icon emblazoned on Spider-Man’s Advanced Suit in the game. Want more details? Click here. That’s just the beginning at San Diego Comic-Con. We have our E3 show floor demo playable on the Comic-Con show floor in the Marvel booth, and many more exciting activities happening on stage at the Marvel booth this week. So check out Marvel Games’ twitter to stay up with all the latest happening from San Diego. That’s all for now, we’re closing in quickly on the release date. We cannot wait to bring you Marvel’s Spider-Man, exclusively to the PlayStation 4 system, on September 7. View the full article
