  1. Bethesda’s put out what promises to be the final Brink trailer before the Splash Damage shooter releases in the US tomorrow. Europeans will get the game on Friday. The near-future team-based game has been delayed by a year, but there’s no doubting a debut on PC, PS3 and 360 this week. Check out Johnny’s just-published chat with studio head Paul Wedgwood here. 2. It appears that Anonymous have trouble in their ranks – not that they had ranks to begin with, in fact that’s the problem. The following has been posted on a hacking site: ‘We regret to inform you today that our network has been compromised by a former IRC-operator and fellow helper named “Ryanâ€. He decided that he didn’t like the leaderless command structure that AnonOps Network Admins use. So he organised a coup d’etat, with his “friends†at skidsr.us . Using the networks service bot “Zalgo†he scavenged the IP’s and passwords of all the network servers (including the hub) and then systematically aimed denial of service attacks at them.’ Sony was targeted by a DOS attack and now Anonymous’ own members have used the same tools to bring down their IRC network. ‘We are profoundly sorry for this drama, and we can’t give you a an estimate on when service will resume normally,’ said Sony Anonymous. The Law Of Karma:`For every event that occurs, there will follow another event whose existence was caused by the first, and this second event will be pleasant or unpleasant according as its cause was skillful or unskillful.’ A skillful event is one that is not accompanied by craving, resistance or delusions; an unskillful event is one that is accompanied by any one of those things.’ Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...
  3. Are you tired of waiting on Sony to turn on PSN? I’m sure you are. We are too, but before your patience wear thin, allow me to comfort you with these words, when PSN returns, you’ll be pleasantly surprised and thoroughly pleased with the new, revamped PlayStation Network. Just recently, Sony announced for European gamers that they’ll get a chance to download four games for free as part of the “welcome back†program the company’s planned to deliver to every PSN member. But that’s not all. As Sony’s rebuilding the network, work being done doesn’t only entail security enhancements. Sony’s about to surprise us with features gamers have longed begged for, and while some won’t go live right away, expect things like cross-game chat and video chat to be part of the new PSN. “As we are rebuilding the network, we are taking into consideration implementing features such as cross-game-chat and in-game video chat to name a few. I cannot confirm any new features at this time but expect a massive update when the network is restored,†said a Sony representative recently. We should also expect to see a revamp of the XMB, and other related changes. Once the service comes back online, you should expect the following features to be available: • Restoration of Online game-play across the PlayStation®3 (PS3) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems • This includes titles requiring online verification and downloaded games • Access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3/PSP for existing subscribers • Access to account management and password reset • Access to download un-expired Movie Rentals on PS3, PSP and MediaGo • PlayStation®Home • Friends List • Chat Functionality In the coming days: Expect PSN by early next week: “In the coming days, we will restore service to the networks and welcome you back to the fun. I wanted to personally reach out and let you know that we are committed to serving you to the very best of our ability, protecting your information better than ever, and getting you back to what you signed up for – all the games and great entertainment experiences that you expect from Sony,†said Sir Howard Stringer in a letter of apology to PSN users. The “new†PSN as Sony calls it, will definitely be more robust than what we’ve come used to, so bare patience just a little longer, because you’ll be pleased. 5. Battlefield 2 Modern Combat, on Playstation 2 and Xbox 360 had clan support. This enabled someone to create a clan and then invite other players to join there clan. From there, the clan would go to the clan match lobby, find a lobby to play against someone else and then enter the lobby and play a match. They even had the option to create their own lobby on the map that they wanted, and then people would join. After the clan had won the match, it was automatically logged into the EA clan support system was a Win and when more and more wins were accumilated, clans’ rank would rise towards the top of the list. Of course, with more losses, you moved towards the bottom. Screenshot of BF2MC clan support on Xbox 360. Many users in Battlefield Bad Company, that were veterans of BF2:MC were dissapointed to not see a clan support system in the game. The game didn’t have private lobbies to even have clan battles through GameBattles, MLG or Urgent Fury. This was a huge dissapointment for gamers who wanted to have competitive play. Battlefield 1943 came around, and this too did not have clan support. For its advantage, it did have private lobbies that were able to be created to which you could invite other clans into the game to have a clan match. Clans would set up matches through Gamebattles and get invited by the host and when the match was full, the game could begin, and thus the clan match had begun. When the game was finally over, the results had to be reported. There was always problems with this method, because many clans would lie about the scores and say that they had won, and it would result in false results. After this had happened too often, people needed to start providing proof of their victory or loss. Battlefield Bad Company 2 did not have clan support like Battlefield 2 Modern Combat, but it had a similar system like Battlefield 1943. There are clan matches played on both PS3 and Xbox 360 currently, running through Gamebattles and other clan sites. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...
  6. If you we’re expecting to go online with your PlayStation 3 or PSP this weekend, you might want to make other plans. In the latest update from Sony Computer Entertainment on the status of its currently offline PlayStation Network, it sounds like we’re in for a longer wait than we (or Sony) expected. Sony said on Sunday that it planned to bring some of its PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online by end of week. But a new message from SCEA’s senior director of corporate communications Patrick Seybold provides little hope that will happen. “We’re still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system,” Seybold wrote this evening on the company’s blog. “Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online.” On Thursday, Sony said it was beginning “the final stages of internal testing of the new system.” The company’s CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, apologized to customers in an open letter at the time. Sony stressed in the past that it wouldn’t bring its PlayStation Network services back online unless it was confident in the strength and security of its system. Based on the following statement, it sounds like Sony may not have been aware of the scope or severity of its problems when it made promises to bring PSN back online in the time frame provided. “When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week,” Seybold wrote. “We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system. We know many of you are wanting to play games online, chat with your friends and enjoy all of the services PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer, and trust me when I say we’re doing everything we can to make it happen.” So, exercise more patience, PlayStation owners. It sounds like we’re going to be waiting even longer to see each other back online anytime soon. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...
  7. Microsoft might announce their next console at E3 2011, if a source close to Develop is to be*believed. *According to*Develop.net, EA developers has a dev kit of the next gen Xbox 360 successor. According to them, the next Xbox console is being tested and played around with by an unamed EA studio, which was sent to them last month. It’s apparently a very early build of the console, and doesn’t have a case yet, with the system being stored in a PC shell. However, the hardware is present in its*entirety. “Quite often when new consoles come around they’re packaged into a PC shell, but actually what’s inside is an entirely new console,†said the person Develop called a “senior, trusted, well-placed,†source. Although, Eurogamer has responded to this report, stating that a E3 2011 announcement is “highly unlikely†Sources close to Gamersmint suggest that this might be the announcement of a new Xbox 360 SKU, with Kinect in-built, rather than the next console in Microsoft’s console-cycle. However, considering that Nintendo is going to reveal their next-gen console at the event, Microsoft might have taken this decision at short notice. E3 2011 takes place in June, and we’ll know for sure only then. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...

The company asked players on the game’s Facebook page to bear with them as “the complexities of the subscription server dictate how and when this will be available” and that the company will be releasing “more information this week.” The outage is part of the overall PlayStation Network issue that resulted in SOE announcing earlier this week that 12,700 credit card numbers were taken and 24.6 million accounts were compromised. 15. Sony declines to testify before Congress as $1 billion lawsuit filed. (from MSNBC.com) Sony Online Entertainment </p>Like a character from their currently shut-down game “DC Universe Online,” Sony is under attack from all sides. By Winda Benedetti A U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee is demanding answers from Sony after private information from some*102 million personal accounts was taken by hackers. In a letter written by the Congressional Subcommittee*on Commerce,*Manufacturing*and Trade and addressed to Sony chairman Kazuo Hirai, representatives asked the company to answer a list of 13 questions related to the hacking of Sony’s PlayStation Network. The questions come as lawyers in Canada have announced they’re seeking a $1 billion class action lawsuit against the company which has recently revealed not one, but two massive hacking breaches that left personal information from 102 million gaming accounts available to hackers. On Monday, Sony revealed that its Sony Online Entertainment PC gaming service had been hacked … this after revealing last week that the PlayStation Network service had been breached. The SOE breach exposed the information from 24.6 million personal accounts as well as some credit card information from gamers who play the service’s online PC games such as “EverQuest,” “DC Universe Online” and “Free Realms.” The PlayStation Network, on the other hand, allows PlayStation 3 owners to game online and that breach exposed personal information from 77 million private accounts. The Congressional committee*has demanded answers*about the PlayStation Network breach only perhaps because news of the Sony Online Entertainment breach wasn’t released until Monday afternoon. Among the questions they asked: “Why did you wait to notify your customers of the breach? “Have you identified how the breach occurred?” Have you identified the individual(s) responsible for the breach? “How many PlayStation Network account holders provided credit card information to Sony Computer Entertainment?” (To read their entire letter, see the New York Times post here.) The Committee’s letter demanded a reply from Sony by Friday, May 6, and explained that it had scheduled a hearing this Wednesday “regarding the threat of data theft to American consumers.” It invited Sony to attend and testify. Too busy to appear Sony, however, will not be attending tomorrow’s hearing. Sony Online Entertainment </p>Congress wants to know who breached Sony’s security. Certainly the mayhem these hacking attacks have caused is so extensive the Joker would be proud to take responsibility. “Sony declined to testify because their internal investigation is still ongoing,” an official working for Representative Mary Bono Mack (R-California), told game blog Kotaku Tuesday morning. But Sony has insisted it is cooperating with Congress. Sony of America spokesman Patrick Seybold sent a statement to Kotaku explaining: “Sony is cooperating with the request for answers to the Committee’s questions, and in fact will be providing our responses in advance of the deadline. We informed the committee that we could not appear as early as this Wednesday because of our ongoing intensive investigation and management of this criminal cyberattack.” In response to Sony’s decision not to attend the hearing, the committee has now moved the deadline for Sony to respond to questions to today, May 3, the New York Times reports. Congress joins the attorney generals from more than 20 states who have already demanded answers from Sony. And the FBI’s cybecrimes unit has confirmed they are looking into the breach as well. Meanwhile, as we reported this morning, Sony CEO Howard Stringer*is under fire for his company’s handling of customers’ personal information and the hacking breaches, with some investors suggesting that he should step down. Anger and lawsuits But no doubt, the most heat is coming from gamers themselves. The Toronto law firm McPhadden Samac Tuovi says it has filed a proposed class action against Sony “for the breach of privacy.” The lawsuit claims damages in excess of $1 billion, which includes having Sony pay the costs of credit monitoring services and fraud insurance coverage for two years. The plaintiff in the action is*21-year-old avid PlayStation user Natasha Maksimovic. “If you can’t trust a huge multi-national corporation like Sony to protect your private information, who can you trust,” Maksimovic said in a press release. “It appears to me that Sony focuses more on protecting its games than its PlayStation users.” This lawsuit follows a lawsuit that’s already been filed in U.S. District Court accusing Sony of “negligence in data security.” Meanwhile, as news of the second breach spread on Tuesday, many gamers responded with anger if not legal action. “Frankly, during most of the time I’ve been a SOE customer, I’ve tried hard to ignore the feeling of constantly being treated like dirt…” wrote one gamer going by the name Faelan at online gaming site MMORPG.com. “I think I’ve given them more chances than they deserve and each time I’ve ended up feeling like the fool. No more I say. Goodbye SOE.” “Sony is just another company that doesn’t care about its customers or its employees … and I think that’s why they were a target of the hackers,” wrote a gamer going by the name TheWillows on an “EverQuest” fan site. But some Sony fans have responded with understanding and have said they will return to the company’s online gaming services when the servers finally go back online. Wrote one “EverQuest” fan going by the name Kaifin, “I for one hope they recover because I have been happy with their products in the past. They were one of the big companies and got arrogant thinking it couldn’t happen to them and because of it they got screwed. Now they will be more careful in the future provided they survive this ordeal.” For more on this topic, please see: Sony Online Entertainment hacked, some credit card info taken Sony sued, could bleed billions following PlayStation Network hack Games to play while PlayStation’s network is down How will Sony make amends to gamers? 16. Sony has confirmed that you will not need to log into your PSN account on the PS3 that you created that account on only. Earlier today, Sony held a press conference regarding the recent PlayStation Network hack, and provided several details on what steps will be taken from here on. One of the points that was mentioned by the translator was that the user’s PlayStation Network account password will need to be changed as soon as he or she logs into it once the network is back online. During this point, it was also mentioned that the password could only be changed “on the same PS3 the account was created or activated.†This can be heard around the 13:30 mark on the press conference video. The press release that was also uploaded during conference states: As an added layer of security, that password can only be changed on the same PS3 in which that account was activated, or through validated email confirmation, a critical step to help further protect customer data. This has led many to believe that their accounts are lost, as a lot of users have been forced to buy a new PlayStation 3 due to hardware failures in the past. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s community moderators have confirmed that you do not need to log on to the PlayStation Network with the PS3 that you created your account on. As long as your account is also activated on your current machine (i.e you have downloaded content to it previously) you should be okay. So, as long as you didn’t deactivate your PlayStation Network account through account management, you will be able to log in and change your password. They tried to sexy-up Luke in Jedi with that all-black number, but that only confused fans. I distinctly remember wondering when Luke turned evil when I first saw him in his darker clothes. 20. In the wake of Sony’s PlayStation Network outage, Sony Online Entertainment is already gifting affected gamers some rewards, and they have more plans in the works. 22. Sony Computer Entertainment has issued an update on last week’s “external intrusion” on its PlayStation Network, an attack that forced the network offline and may have exposed the personal information of millions of members. On the company’s PlayStation.blog, senior director of corporate communications Patrick Seybold writes that the PlayStation maker will be “taking steps to make our services safer and more secure than ever before.” That includes “a new system software update that will require all users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored.” Presumably, that software update will come to both the PSP and PlayStation 3 within the week. Currently, PSN accounts are locked out of the system, making a change to personal information and passwords impossible. Furthermore, Sony says it is “initiating several measures that will significantly enhance all aspects of PlayStation Network’s security and your personal data, including moving our network infrastructure and data center to a new, more secure location, which is already underway.” Sony writes that it still plans to have its PlayStation Network back online by next week, offering the caveat “we want to be very clear that we will only restore operations when we are confident that the network is secure.” For PSN account holders who may be concerned about the damage already done to their personal information or credit cards, Sony offers the following updates. On the safety of your personal and financial information… The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken. The personal data table, which is a separate data set, was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack. On the credit card details that PlayStation Network and Qriocity do and do not store… While all credit card information stored in our systems is encrypted and there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained. Keep in mind, however that your credit card security code (sometimes called a CVC or CSC number) has not been obtained because we never requested it from anyone who has joined the PlayStation Network or Qriocity, and is therefore not stored anywhere in our system.
