  1. Square Enix is to release Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days a week early in Europe and the US. Originally due on August 24 in the US and August 27 in EU, the IO sequel will now drop on August 17 and 20 respectively for both regions on PS3, 360 and PC. “The team has worked hard to deliver a game that’s different from the current trend of third-person shooters and we’re so pleased to be able to share it with the world ahead of schedule,” said IO boss Niels Jørgensen. The game sees you in the shoes of the schizophrenic Lynch, who, with Kane,*faces some of Shanghai’s biggest troubles after “a simple job” goes wrong. PR is below. 7. The 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo officially kicked off today, and in addition to the many excellent PlayStation 3 announcements revealed during Sony’s noontime press conference, we made a few of our own. First, was our front page update of SOCOM4.com. Not only does the slick new entry page show off our official E3 trailer and new batch of screenshots, it also reveals another bit of exciting news – our GameStop-exclusive pre-order bonus, the "Abandoned" classic multiplayer map. Head into any GameStop store near you, pre-order SOCOM 4, and the popular SOCOM I/ II favorite is all yours. As an extra bonus, we also launched the official SOCOM Facebook fan page. If you’re a fan of any or all of the games in the SOCOM franchise, then this is the page for you. It’s a bit in the early stages at the moment, but you can expect it to grow and improve over the next several months as we get closer and closer to SOCOM 4’s release. But that’s not our only reason for showing up on the blog today. We also wanted to give fans a glimpse at what they’re missing in case they couldn’t make it to E3 this year, or if they are the show and just haven’t had the chance to check us out yet. In total, there are 16 separate SOCOM 4 kiosks available to those in attendance – with a nice blend of DualShock 3 and PlayStation Move controllers mixed between them. This input variety means that players of any background can try out our game regardless of their peripheral preference, while also giving those who like to experience “everything” a second reason to go back and try our demo yet again. If you’re at the show, you can find our SOCOM 4 kiosks at Sony Computer Entertainment America’s main PlayStation booth (West Hall 4532) or Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s alternate floor space (West MR 515). If you want to know what some of your favorite media outlets think of SOCOM 4 thus far, be sure to follow the links below to read their impressions. E3 2010: SOCOM 4 Updated Impressions (GameSpot)E3 2010: SOCOM 4 PlayStation Move Preview (IGN.com) One last thing before we go -- as we mentioned last week, if you’re one of the lucky ones who has a chance to play SOCOM 4 at E3, you’ll be given a special SOCOM 4 sticker to wear on your arm or shoulder -- if Zipper Interactive’s own Jeremy Dunham (hey, that’s me!) or Chris Roper spot you walking around the show floor with our SOCOM 4 sticker on your person, then you could be stopped and presented with your very own limited edition SOCOM 4 artwork signed by the development team itself. In fact, we’ve already passed out tons of artwork already -- including a piece to frequent SOCOM.com forum-goer, “arakouftaian.” We’ve included some pictures of Ara and others who have already gotten their artwork below. We hope to see more of you tomorrow! Arakouftaian and pal, Vanessa, pose in front of our S4 booth Jordan and Galen throw up the sign Sayla and Christopher represent the "Peach State" More...

  9. Our Developer Profile series introduces you to the many faces of Zipper Interactive. From designers to artists to programmers to audio engineers to producers, you’ll meet the creative minds that make Zipper what it is (and maybe learn a few surprises along the way). This week we meet up with Jay Embry, Test Lead here at Zipper Interactive. It's his job to help make sure that our games are as polished as can be with nary a bug in sight. This means that Jay and the rest of the QA department have seen practically every single way you can break a game, both figuratively and literally. He's sure to have some great stories on this week's Zipline podcast. Job Title: Test Lead Years at Zipper: 5 Years in the Industry: 10 Favorite Zipper Game: MAG Favorite Non-Zipper Game: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Motto: “Anything worth doing is worth doing right” What is it that you do specifically, and can you walk us through your typical day? I am the lead for the group of testers we have on MAG. At this point, we make sure we are aware of the issues that are currently present in the Live game, as well as any issues that need to be addressed for patches that we are working to deploy to the public. In a typical day, we have new builds of the game that have bug fixes as well as newer functionality that we are working on putting out. I make sure to get these new builds hosted up on our local servers for the team to run through and verify the fixes. We also check the build for overall stability so that it could potentially be sent to Sony for further testing, which will then eventually get deployed to the Live servers. We also participate in playtests that we hold internally to verify new functionality and new tunings to the weapons, vehicles, etc. How did you get into the industry? I was actually working in the warehouse at Nintendo and heard that they had a “Game Testing” department. Since I had always been into videogames I thought, “This would be AWESOME!” since I was still under the impression that testers just “played games all day”. I learned a LOT in the first year I was testing, and even though it was a lot more work than I had originally thought it would be, I really got into it. What are some other games or projects that you’ve worked on in the past? I worked on a lot of titles at Nintendo. The contract testers at Nintendo typically didn’t get their names in the credits, but I had worked on a couple of Pokemon titles, Starcraft 64, as well as other GBA and GameCube games. After that, I got jobs at other studios/publishers as a contract tester. I worked on MechAssault on the Xbox, and I also worked on Dungeon Siege 2 for PC. So I have worked on a wide variety of titles. What’s your proudest moment? Other than my son being born, it was when I started to see my name in the credits of the games I worked on. Is there anything you’d like to say to the fans? You guys kick ass, and we appreciate everything that you do to help us identify the issues. And everything you do to keep our community strong and fun! Don't forget to click here and submit your questions to Jay for this week's Zipline podcast! More...
  10. E3 2010 was an important milestone for SOCOM 4 as we debuted a new level and gave show goers a chance to play the game with both the PlayStation Move and DualShock 3. Because we know that many SOCOM fans would be unable to attend E3 and see the game firsthand, we turned on the cameras and recorded a look at what went on in Los Angeles. Enjoy. 11. Since E3 came and went last month, media outlets all over the world have been posting their impressions of SOCOM 4 with overwhelmingly positive reactions. 13. Our Developer Profile series introduces you to the many faces of Zipper Interactive. From designers to artists to programmers to audio engineers to producers, you’ll meet the creative minds that make Zipper what it is (and maybe learn a few surprises along the way). Our profile spotlight for this week shines on Alan Van Slyke, Director of Production here at Zipper. That title means that he has to wear many hats on a daily basis, so he's got a lot to talk about. Job Title: Director of Production Years at Zipper: 5 Years in the Industry: 14 Favorite Zipper Game: MAG Favorite Non-Zipper Game: All time: RBI Baseball (NES). Recent: Red Dead Redemption. Motto: Do what you truly enjoy, and you’ll never have a regret. What is it that you do specifically, and can you walk us through your typical day? Specifically, I’m responsible for making sure that the games the studio develops are released on time, and at the highest quality. A typical day is loaded with problem solving. It can be very low level... such as helping an artist and designer work out a specific disagreement while constructing a level... Or it can be high level, such as helping the leads and managers get a handle on what we want to deliver for the next demo, and how we can get it done. There is lots of talking to people and discussing issues, and helping find solutions between disciplines. How did you get into the industry? I graduated with a computer science degree and got into biotech right out of college. I had always had a passion for games, and EA had a division across town that was hiring. I got my foot in the door there and initially worked in IT, then on the server development team for Need for Speed. This development experience introduced me to the EA.com platform team in California (EA headquarters), so I moved down there for a few years and helped with EA.com, eventually ending up as a Lead Architect in the Worldwide Technology division. This gave me exposure to a breadth of online platform components, as well as continued development experience with many online titles... and ultimately provided the opportunity to take a Producer role at Zipper with their ambitious PS3 large scale online-only shooter title: MAG. I’ve been in the industry for about 14 years now, and wouldn’t trade it. What are some other games or projects that you’ve worked on in the past? The Need for Speed series, Motor City Online, Sims Online and MAG. What’s your proudest moment? Unveiling MAG at the E3 floor in 2009. This was really the public's first opportunity to get their hands on a title that we had put tons of effort into. Working the floor, having people be excited to play our game, and going back to Zipper and sharing the experience with the team was exciting. Is there anything you’d like to say to the fans? To everyone who posts on the boards, in Beta, and chats on headsets nightly: a sincere thanks. We invested an incredible amount of effort to build MAG, and absolutely continue to incorporate as much feedback as possible... prior to launch, in the 9 patches since launch, and in future patches that are currently in development. 15. Our Developer Profile series introduces you to the many faces of Zipper Interactive. From designers to artists to programmers to audio engineers to producers, you’ll meet the creative minds that make Zipper what it is (and maybe learn a few surprises along the way). This week we talk with Tom Rigas, a Producer here at Zipper who is currently working on SOCOM 4. Tom handled a lot of the day-to-day production work on helping to get SOCOM 4's E3 demo finished in time for the show, so he'll have plenty to talk about on this week's Zipline podcast. Job Title: Producer Years at Zipper: 2 Years in the Industry: 18 Favorite Zipper Game: Crimson Skies Favorite Non-Zipper Game: Half-Life Motto: The best inspiration is hard work. What is it that you do specifically, and can you walk us through your typical day? It is difficult to nail down what I do specifically on the project. I often describe my job as that of a plumber; I make sure that things are coming and going as efficiently as possible. My typical day consists of attending several meetings, playing the game, reviewing schedules, tracking progress, setting goals, keeping the lines of communication open and general problem solving. How did you get into the industry? I answered a “Game Tester Needed” ad in the newspaper. At the time, I thought it was too good to be true and sometimes it still seems that way. What are some other games or projects that you’ve worked on in the past? I've worked on flight simulators, shooters, RPGs, sports games, strategy games, action games and even a digital board game a few years ago. What’s your proudest moment? It is tough to call out any single moment, but in general, I feel proud when people have fun with something that I helped build. Is there anything you’d like to say to the fans? It is exciting to work on a project with such passionate fans. Keep sending the feedback! Don't forget to click this link and leave your questions to Tom for this week's Zipline podcast! More...
  16. Sony has revealed the cover art for Killzone 3, complete with Move compatible logo. Killzone 3 is not due to release until February 2011, so it’s certainly got its cover art rather early. Maybe Sony is just trying to build the hype, already. As you can see below, the new packaging includes the new PlayStation Move logo as well as a 3D compatible logo. It’s also a lot brighter than past Killzone retail art, giving it a more appealing, albeit sinister look, than the series usual Helghast coverboy. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...
  17. Ubisoft has released a brand new single-player trailer for Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, complete with commentary from the game’s associate producer. The video, which is seven minutes long, shows some of the new features of the game, like the ability to ride your horse through towns and slay the enemy while astride your trusty steed. Ezio is also seen manning a cannon during the video, to keep the enemies away while the villagers escape. Our hero is also seen using lifts to quickly ascend many levels at once, allowing him to get to the rooftops quickly. Finally, combat seems to have been improved, with enemies now attacking all at once, though Ezio can use counters to fight them off. Check out the video below. 18. Microsoft’s confident enough with its latest console that it has took out the red LED’s entirely, meaning that the infamous Red Ring of Death is no more. This, however doesn’t mean your machine will never break, it’s just when it does you won’t be greeted with those pesky red lights which spell the end for your machine. In designing the new console, Microsoft decided that they would replace the LED’s for a new and still unspecified ‘messaging system,’ so when it does break you will still know about it. “Now obviously, the box has a way to communicate to you if something has happened but yes, three red lights are not part of our sequence of telling somebody something is wrong,” Microsoft Game Studios corporate VP Phil Spencer told IGN. “Obviously if you look at the success rate of the original 360s, we’re very proud of both the way the company stepped up to support the customers that we had as well as the success rate we have with the box today. I think we’ve learned a lot. That learning has gone into the development of this new box.” Microsoft will be hoping that its latest machine doesn’t become famous for this new unspecified message, but only time will tell. 19. Microsoft has confirmed that when the new Xbox 360 model launches next month that it will not include a data transfer kit. This follows after retailer Game suggested that “the new Xbox will have a data migration kit so getting all that gaming goodness out of your old hard drive will be a breeze”. However this is not the case, as told to MCV by Microsoft. “The article incorrectly reports that the Xbox 360 250GB console comes with the Data Migration Kit. In fact, the Data Migration Kit will be available as a separate retail product on 16th July (ERP £14.99), and not included with the console.” Users with the latest firmware can transfer data using a USB memory stick, although memory on these devices is fairly limited. 21. The new, smaller, sexier Xbox 360 is in stores now, and if you know where to go it can be yours for as little as $90. As a member of the Kotaku team not present at Microsoft’s 2010 E3 press conference, I do not get the new Xbox 360 for free, so as soon as I got home I contacted my local GameStop to see if they had them in stock. They do, and even better, they’ve got trade-in specials going for the original Xbox 360 that make upgrading a lot less painful. I feel it bears mentioning that my local GameStop manager didn’t know about the new model until a customer called him asking for it, ten minutes after the Microsoft presser ended. For a company the regularly leaks information like a sieve, that’s rather impressive. But we aren’t here to be impressed by secrets. We’re here to be impressed by savings. Right now the Xbox 360 base unit is trading in for $100 store credit. That’s without hard drive and with one controller. GameStop trades in the hard drives separately as they have to send them off to be cleaned. The smallest size, 20GB, trades in for $30, with the 60GB, 120GB, and 250GB netting you $35, $40, and $50 respectively. Then there’s the network adapter. The new system has built-in Wi-Fi, so your wireless adapter is now obsolete. The white version trades in for $40, while the newer black version will score you $50 credit. And let’s not forget the Edge card, which gives you an extra 10 percent store credit for accessories. So, if you’ve got a 250GB Xbox 360 with the black wireless adapter, your trade-in credit works out like this: System: $100 Network Card: $50 ($55 with Edge card) Hard Drive: $50 ($55 with Edge card) ———————————————————————— Total: $200 ($210 with Edge) With the new Xbox 360 selling for $299, that leaves only $90 to $100 unaccounted for. Other items you can trade-in include wireless controllers at $25 apiece, and wired controllers for $20. So yes, trading up to the new 360 isn’t as painful as it could be, and GameStop told me that if they sell out, they’ll let you reserve from the next batch, with the trade-in special still applying. Of course you have your saved data to worry about, but that just means you’ll have to play your favorite games all over again, and who doesn’t love doing that? Update: Someone named Fred informed us that GameStop will give you the trade-in price for your hard drive up to seven days after your purchase, meaning you can transfer your data and bring the drive back later and still receive the credit. Thank You Mike Fahey from Kotaku!! Thanks to Chili-Palmer for the Ad! Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...
  22. Not only does 505 Games’ upcoming killer bear game have multiplayer, it has game modes that actually promote strategic thinking and cooperation. Who knew? Naughty Bear is a game about one bear killing other bears, so naturally that extends to the multiplayer modes of the title as well. Developer Artificial Mind and Movement (A2M) didn’t simply toss in bear deathmatch, however. Instead, the multiplayer modes in Naughty Bear are unique takes on some of the classics, with a strong focus on cooperation. Take the mode Jelly Wars, for instance. In this mode, three normal bears need to work together to collect jellies while one player takes on the role of Naughty Bear, trying to keep them from creating the biggest jelly ever. He’ll set traps, hide the jellies, and maim and kill the other players while they work together to survive his onslaught. It sounds rather compelling, doesn’t it? In Cake Walk, one player must survive while holding the Golden Cupcake, which renders him unable to attack or defends and slows his movement speed. Golden Oozy mode gives one player a machine gun with unlimited ammo, with the other players working together to take him down, and then against each other to claim the “oozy” for themselves. There’s also an Assault mode, which is a two-on-two objective defending game, and the closest thing Naughty Bear has to a normal multiplayer mode. I figured we’d just be getting a single player adventure game on June 29. Looks like it’s quite a bit more than that. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...
  23. Rumor has it that Hideo Kojima will announce a PS3-exclusive during the Tokyo Games Show in September. According to a senior US publishing source close to CVG, Kojima will announce a “massive PS3 exclusive that will own the show” at the event to be published by Konami. Supposedly, Kojima wanted to show the game at E3 but decided against it in order to polish the up “to ensure it’s bulletproof”. We’ll contact Konami and see if anyone bites, but if this turns out to be true, don’t expect it to tell us anything that would ruin a surprise. Still, if true, this may be the “secret taboo project” for “high spec machines” that may “make him leave the games industry”. Mystery and intrigue to ensue, we suppose. Probably another count-down eventually as well. save Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...
  24. As many know this is the first time that Urgent Fury has atteneded the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). This is a major step for Urgent Fury. In attendance were William Murray (FW’s Wolf Dog), Patrick Gross (Commander Claymore Fury) and myself, Shane Bell, CIO Urgent Fury. As you can imagine this was a major step for Urgent Fury. We spent time meeting with the major players in the industry with full acceptance as well as being snuffed by a major player as well. Of course one of the most anticipated games for Urgent Fury is Socom 4 and yes we spent quite a bit of time with Zipper discussing this… we cannot reveal most of our discussions, but needless to say “WOW”. You will hear more in the podcasts coming up. I will say from my perspective (playing since S1) Socom is back with a Vengeance. We also spent some much needed time with EA and DICE as they presented Medal of Honor’s Multiplayer to us. I will have to say that this is a great looking FPS for UF to add to our line up for 2010 – 2011. Also in the mix we took a look at Brink from Bethesda which includes an intense Multiplayer as well. Though it is delayed for release in 2011 we will keep this in our scopes for some tournament play. So of the biggest things, I will say that the debut of 3D gaming by PS3 and the 3DS are the leaders. Though many say it is a trend, I tend to disagree. Microsoft is still lagging behind in my opinion. They finally have added the built in wireless (about time) but still no Blu-Ray support, so you got to get that separate. And well no 3D either… Patrick, WIll and Shane with Travis Steiner, Socom 4 Lead Designer Zipper Interactive Everyone will be happy to know that you do not have to purchase a new PS3 to get 3D, it will come in the firmware updates. Also the addition of Playstation Plus for only $49.99 a year made its appearance at the Playstation Press Conference. Great price for lots of goodies, I recommend everyone gets it.
