  1. Yahoo Finance.

Abandoning a break-up plan it announced last month, Netflix said Monday morning that it had decided to keep its DVD-by-mail and online streaming services together under one name and one Web site.

The company admitted that it had moved too fast when it tried to spin-off the old-fashioned DVD service into a new company called Qwikster.

"We underestimated the appeal of the single web site and a single service," Steve Swasey, a Netflix spokesman, said in a telephone interview. He quickly added: "We greatly underestimated it."

Mr. Swasey said that the Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings declined an interview request. But in a statement, Mr. Hastings said, "Consumers value the simplicity Netflix has always offered and we respect that. There is a difference between moving quickly -- which Netflix has done very well for years -- and moving too fast, which is what we did in this case."

Mr. Swasey declined to comment on any involvement by the Netflix board in the decision to keep the two services together.

Netflix said it never actually separated the services or started Qwikster. But the Sept. 18 announcement that it intended to do so stoked anger among Netflix customers, some of whom were already incensed by a price hike.

In a blog post that day about the plan, Mr. Hastings wrote, "Companies rarely die from moving too fast, and they frequently die from moving too slowly." His implication was that Netflix had to act aggressively to expand its fast-growing streaming service by severing its older, slower DVD-by-mail arm.

In a sentence that now seems like a bit of foreshadowing, Mr. Hastings also wrote, "It is possible we are moving too fast - it is hard to say."

Netflix said that day that the separation would take effect in a few weeks. But tens of thousands spoke out against the plan on Netflix's Web site and others, and Netflix stock slid sharply.

Three days after the announcement, Mr. Hastings wrote in a Facebook status update, "In Wyoming with 10 investors at a ranch/retreat. I think I might need a food taster. I can hardly blame them."

The planned break-up was rooted in Mr. Hastings' and Netflix's belief that DVDs and online streams have different cost structures and different consumer demographics.

In July, to address the structural underpinnings of the business, Netflix announced that it would start charging $8 a month for both its streaming service and its DVD service, a total of $16 a month for the combination.

Previously, DVDs were a $2 add-on to the $8 streaming service. Of course, subscribers who only wanted one service or the other -- most new subscribers only want the online streams -- saw no price hike, but that fact was drowned out by the outcry.

Netflix expected some of its 25 million subscribers to cancel in the wake of the price change, but the cancellation rate exceeded expectations. The company said in mid-September that it expected to report a quarterly decline of about one million in the third quarter, which ended on Sept. 30.

But that guidance was given before the break-up was announced; Mr. Swasey said Netflix would not comment on whether the quarterly losses would exceed the already-lowered expectations. The company will report earnings and subscriber figures on Oct. 24.

On Sunday night, Mr. Swasey sought to reiterate what Mr. Hastings tried to say last month when he announced Qwikster: that Netflix had failed to communicate effectively about the price changes. "We had to look at the reality of what it cost" to mail multiple DVDs to households each month, Mr. Swasey said, noting that the round-trip postage alone for one DVD cost almost $1.

Under the plan announced on Monday, the price change will remain in effect, but the two services will not be untethered. That means that subscribers who want both online streams and DVDs won't have to manage two accounts and pay two bills each month, after all.

Netflix tried to be crystal-clear about it, issuing a press release that was titled "DVDs Will Be Staying At Netflix.com" and sending e-mails to subscribers about the news.

"Netflix said in a Sept. 18 blog post that its DVD by mail service would operate at Qwikster.com," the press release read. "Instead, U.S. members will continue to use one website, one account and one password for their movie and TV watching enjoyment under the Netflix brand."

A plan for Qwikster to rent video games may or may not move forward; Mr. Swasey said it was "to be determined."

Netflix, meanwhile, still has to concentrate on its online streaming service, which is widely considered to be its core business.

Next February, it is expected to lose the right to stream films from Walt Disney Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment as a result of a failed renegotiation with the premium cable channel Starz. But it announced a deal last month with DreamWorks Animation to stream that studio's films starting in 2013. Last week, it announced a deal with AMC Networks to stream old episodes of TV shows like "The Walking Dead."

Netflix also remains interested in paying for the production of new TV shows. Earlier this year it ordered its first original drama, "House of Cards," which is expected to have its premiere in late 2012. Now it is in talks to distribute new episodes of two cancelled TV series, "Arrested Development," formerly of the Fox network, and "Reno 911," formerly of Comedy Central. The past seasons of both shows can be streamed via Netflix -- and can be rented on DVD, too.

I'm seriously thinking of getting the bundle. Pretty Cool!!! :thumb:

  4. I really dig the Engineer class (carbines) but the Recon (Sniper) class has been seriously nerfed by this glowing scope flash crap. I still get sniped occasionally but it's retarded how much they stand out sometimes. The flashlights are funny though

The Engineer Class is all I use unless I'm out of ammo and pick up someones gun.

  5. OK, so maybe I'm wrong. The latest interview with PS Blog, DICE Producer Patrick Liu said this:

So unless he was referring to the PC functions, which makes no sense on a PS Blog interview, I am assuming this featuere will be available to the PS3?

Alright, I joined the BattleLog using my Origin sign-in, (I pre-ordered B3 from Origin), and unless they issue a separate download or use the consoles internet explorer, it's just for PC. You can still use it to check your stats, but not join a game.

According to the latest video, at the bottom of the right hand screen there is a little icon stating "PC Features". Which leads me to believe these functions are for PC only. And are not available to console gamers.

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. Unless they have a seperate download for Battlelog on consoles this is just for the PC.

  7. I thought the Support Strike Package was based on a point system, and not just kills. From the interviews I saw, I thought you could actually get a streak bounus by just completing objectives.

Modern Warfare 3 Killstreak System Explained

    Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

One of the most important aspects about Modern Warfare 3 will be the killstreak system. If Infinity Ward does it right, every single Call of Duty fan will love them for it. However, if Infinity Ward doesn’t get it right, all hell will break loose. With Modern Warfare 2 we had the chance to see what a sub-optimal killstreak system can do. Enough people have complained about the killstreak system and even today, nearly 2 years after the official launch, you will see new complaints about it.

Infinity Ward is aware of the fact that the killstreak system used in Modern Warfare 2 can be improved and with the new killstreak system used in Modern Warfare 3, they intend to do just that. Robert Bowling kept hinting via Twitter that Modern Warfare 3 would include a re-vamped killstreak system and after watching countless videos released during and after the Call of Duty XP event, we now know what the re-vamped killstreak system implies.

Click here to see all 26 killstreaks in Modern Warfare 3.

Killstreaks are divided into Strike Packages

The biggest change in the killstreak system is that the new killstreak system is divided into 3 groups called Strike Packages. Modern Warfare 3 will include an Assault Strike Package, a Support Strike Package and a Specialist Strike Package. The old system where every player had to pick from the same list of 15 killstreaks is gone. Instead, players need to pick 3 killstreaks from 1 of the Strike Packages.

Assault Strike Package: This Strike Package can be seen as the same killstreak system used in Modern Warfare 2. Streaks within the Assault Strike Package chain and are designed for more direct damage. Killstreaks such as the Attack Helicopter, AC-130 and Osprey Gunner can be found in the Assault Strike Package. Upon death, your streak will reset.

Support Strike Package: Streaks within this Strike Package do not chain (think killstreak system used in Black Ops). Streaks within the Support Strike Package are more support oriented. Killstreaks such as the Counter UAV, SAM Turret and EMP can be found in the Support Strike Package. Streaks do not reset upon death.

Specialist Strike Package: The Specialist Strike Package is designed for the expert players. Rewards come in the form of additional Perks. A player activates additional Perks as they progress in a point streak. Players managing to gain 8 points without dying will be able to use every single Perk in the game (click here to see the Modern Warfare 3 Perk list). These Perks last until death.

Ways to earn points towards Killstreaks

One of the problems with the killstreak system used in Modern Warfare 2 was that it pushed players to focus less on game objectives and more on killing other players, even if it wasn’t the main objective for that game mode (think Domination, Capture the Flag, etc.)

The killstreak system in Modern Warfare 3 wants to solve this problem by rewarding players in different ways than just killing other players. What used to be called a killstreak can now be called a pointstreak as well as killstreaks in Modern Warfare 3 will be earned through accumulation of points. There will be 3 ways in which a player can earn points towards his killstreaks.

    1. The first way a player can earn points is by completing game objectives in game modes such as Domination, Capture the Flag, Search & Destroy, etc. Every objective “completion†is worth 1 point.
    2. The second way a player can earn points is by getting 2 assists. Every 2 assists a player will earn 1 point. This only works if you have Hardline Pro equipped.
    3. The third way a player can earn points is by killing opponents of course. Every kill is worth 1 point.

I’m hoping that by introducing the point system players will focus less on killing other players and more on objectives when appropriate. All in all I’m looking forward to trying Modern Warfare 3 and the new killstreak system and I’m curious what you think about it.

  8. Double XP & Nuketown 24/7 are back for the weekend on both PS3 & Xbox360. Not sure if it was turned on yet some say it is, some it's not.

With all the rain were getting on the East Coast this weekend, I should get to the 14th prestige and maybe half way to 15. :)
