Happy Halloween, PlayStation! I’m Erik Odeldahl, creative director at Fast Travel Games, and I’m excited to be back at PlayStation Blog to talk some more about our new PS VR2 title, Vampire: The Masquerade – Justice, which launches later this week on November 2! Check out our shiny new launch trailer below. When we announced Justice earlier this year, we gave you an in-depth look at our stealth gameplay. Players will travel to the seedy streets of nighttime Venice and become a true apex predator, stalking enemies, drinking their blood and using brutal powers to take them down. We may still be a few days from launch but, given it’s the spookiest day of the year, we’d like to dive deeper into the RPG aspects of the game. Each discipline in Justice can be upgraded and morphed into far more effective and deadlier versions of themselves. Let’s talk a bit about how this changes the game. Upgrade your disciplines Between each mission in Justice you’ll be able to visit The Inner Sanctum. It’s here where you’ll meet the game’s full suite of potential disciplines. Select a tile and it will hover over to you, giving you a detailed look at exactly what each upgrade entails. At first it may seem overwhelming but, rest assured, you’ll be steadily working your way up the tree as the game goes on. There are plenty of opportunities to unlock as many abilities as possible over the 10-15 hour campaign, depending on how you play. Build your own justice Crucially, these upgrade paths will allow you to tailor your gameplay experience to how you want to play. If you want, you can focus on the game’s more aggressive abilities and stand a much greater chance of survival when you’re discovered or picking foes off from afar. Or you could choose to take a more passive approach. Cloak of Shadows, the ability to turn invisible and slip past enemies, can first be upgraded to consume less of your blood meter, allowing you to use it more often. Keep investing in this skill path and you may even be able to vanish into thin air even when enemies are looking right at you. XP aplenty But how do you earn XP to upgrade abilities in Justice? There are several ways, including simply beating missions. This will earn you the base amount of XP that will be great for building up the essentials as you progress through the story. Bonus objectives and missions will be a key means to faster upgrades. Every mission in the game comes with two bonus objectives, often asking you to clear the level without being seen and/or without harming anyone. These can be tricky and push your skills to the absolute limit, but the rewards are well worth it. Finally, you can also hunt down the game’s hidden collectables, which must be eroded away with the Corrosive Vitae bolt. Each one will net you a small amount of XP. Persuasive new paths The Inner Sanctum isn’t just for upgrading your disciplines, though. Another element of Justice’s RPG mechanics is the dialogue system, which lets you choose how to interact with characters in certain scenarios. You may choose to sweet talk allies and make friends, for example, or give them the cold shoulder. But, if you want, you can invest XP into making Justice a more intimidating figure that can get extra information out of targets. You may even be able to unlock shortcuts, bypassing certain areas of levels. That is if you know exactly when to apply the pressure. That’s just a small taste of the RPG mechanics awaiting you in Vampire: The Masquerade – Justice. It’s also just one part of the overall experience. PlayStation players, it’s almost time to crack the code with Lockpick, a PlayStation-exclusive* Operator coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. As announced at Call of Duty: Next a few weeks ago, the Lockpick Operator Pack will be available starting November 10 for anyone who pre-orders Modern Warfare III at PlayStation Store. With the game’s launch around the corner, we wanted to share some in-depth details on the inspiration for this cunning character and a couple of the tools she’ll have at her disposal. Élodie “Lockpick” Michaux’s backstory Like Oni in 2022’s Modern Warfare II, Lockpick was a combined creative effort between the PlayStation team and the Call of Duty development team, this time Sledgehammer Games. There was quick alignment on the type of personality each team was looking for, and thus the backstory for Élodie “Lockpick” Michaux came to be. Born in Paris, Élodie was raised by her mother and four streetwise older brothers. As she idolized them and tried to imitate them, she developed tough skin and light fingers.​ She went from stealing fruits from local stands to higher-level robberies. Any time she got caught (a rarity), she was able to charm her way out of serious consequences.​ Her brothers straightened out as they got older, but Élodie was up to the same tricks… until her crimes – and the police – caught up with her. Élodie’s brothers bailed her out and staged an intervention. Out of love for them, Élodie gave up her criminal ways, and eventually followed them into the army where she quickly proved herself and entered the Special Forces, specializing in demolitions. Over the next five years, three brothers died in action, and one brother was severely disabled. After her third brother died, she became disillusioned with army life and left.​ With her mother and remaining brother to care for, she turned to friends from the old days on the streets, who asked for help with an art heist. Élodie, with skills in disarmament, explosives, and thievery, agreed. They succeeded, and she became well-off. ​ This became what she did to support her family from then on. And the more jobs she does, the more others hear about her skills, and the better the jobs become. The inspiration for Lockpick As Sledgehammer Games thought about the operator they were creating, there were some themes that definitely stood out. As Dana Shaw, senior narrative designer, says “We wanted to make someone who felt mischievous and playful and a little arrogant. We drew from some of our favorite heist movies to nail down the personality and worldview. For the backstory we liked the idea that she had tried to not be a criminal and things just didn’t go as planned. Everything followed around that.” Lockpick’s visual design draws on the art thief narrative with a colorful camo suit, decked out with her tactical gear needed to do the job. And although her signature blonde braid gives a hint of her identity, her mask is a pivotal part of her outfit. Per Shaw, “no thief wants to be recognized outside the job.” From her roguish quips as she interacts with her competitors and teammates in MP, to her forceful finishing move, Lockpick’s personality comes through in several aspects of her character’s design. But two of the tools at her disposal also lean into the art heist theme. Élodie comes with the Starry Knife Melee Blueprint and the AMRican Gothic SMG Weapon Blueprint, also unlocked as part of the Lockpick Operator Pack and usable with any operator in Modern Warfare III. When stealth is key, there’s no better weapon than the Knife blueprint to take down opponents before they even know you were there. But if a situation does get sticky at close range, this SMG Blueprint is the right tool for the job, being light but packing a major punch. As Shaw emphasizes, Élodie “always knows the right tool for the job. No matter what the job is.” Both of these weapons also draw from the artistic design of Lockpick herself, leveraging her blue camo with gold accents. The SMG Blueprint even comes with a blue tracer effect, allowing players to colorfully work their way through their objectives. What’s next for Lockpick and Modern Warfare III For players who have pre-ordered at PlayStation Store, the Lockpick Operator Pack will be playable in both Modern Warfare III’s Multiplayer and Zombies game modes starting November 10, and then in Call of Duty: Warzone starting at season 1. She will also be the inspiration for Call of Duty: Warzone PlayStation Combat Packs starting in season 1 as well, so be on the lookout for more information on those soon. Play Video This benefit for MP, Zombies, and Call of Duty: Warzone is not the only reason to pre-order Modern Warfare III, though. In addition to additional content benefits beyond the Lockpick Operator Pack, players can play the game’s blockbuster Campaign before the game’s official release. The Foglands is a fast-paced bar fight that keeps you on your toes everytime you play it. This first-person roguelite adventure has pushed many technical boundaries for our small studio. Today we’re excited for players to experience the features of PS5 and PS VR2 that we utilized to bring our world and gameplay to life. Atmospheric fog – 4K HDR The Foglands, as the name implies, is filled with various shapes and colors of fog, all rendered beautifully within the window-like viewport of the PS VR2 headset. Lighting is also a big part of the dynamic look of the Foglands, and the high fidelity provided by the HDR display helps give us detail in even the darkest corridors to give clues on what may be lurking just around the corner. Otherworldly soundscapes – 3D Tempest Audio Audio is just as important as visuals in Foglands, so it is important that we create immersive soundscapes that surround the player with a living world that is responsive to their actions. Audiokinetic’s Wwise has been a crucial part of our toolkit since the very beginning. It perfectly integrates into the PS5’s Tempest 3D technology, and helps make our sound design and incredible soundtrack part of the action. Intention Targeting – eye tracking The eye tracking feature on the PS VR2 headset is foundational to many aspects of The Foglands. It gives us a look into what the player is focusing on, which informs a lot of the gameplay systems we have built. One example is our “Intention Targeting” system that determines where a player is looking and helps make things like throwing or aiming a lot more intuitive and effective, giving the player the results they expect to achieve through their gameplay. Dynamic Feedback – Haptics and adaptive triggers In order to make our players feel like runners the moment they step into the Foglands, we are utilizing Wwise’s Motion plugin, which integrates with the built in haptics for both the PS VR2 Sense and DualSense Controllers. This way our audio and vibration overlap perfectly to give players a seamless sensory experience. We also make use of adaptive triggers for both types of controllers to give a realistic resistance when firing the various weapons in our game. Play your way – PS VR2 & PS5 Last, but certainly not least, one of the core features of The Foglands is being able to play the game in immersive PS VR2 or traditional first-person mode. So whether you want to utilize your whole body to add even more feedback to the actions or if you prefer lounging on the couch and having a more conventional playthrough, we made sure that your experience would be equally immersive and fun!As you can see it would be hard to make a game quite like this on any other platform and we are so grateful to be given the opportunity to have so much power at our fingertips!
