Diablo III followed in the footsteps of series entries before it, introducing a new generation of dungeon crawlers to the hellish world of Sanctuary back in 2012. Since then, thanks to a loyal player base, they’ve kept the hack-’n-slash RPG party going with countless updates. But now it’s time for the future, and Blizzard is molding Diablo IV to deliver just that. While the title looks to the past of both the real world and that of Sanctuary for inspiration, the upcoming sequel pushes the Diablo series in new ways. In an immense and gorgeous new landscape, you’ll encounter all-new elements to the Diablo formula that let you control the game’s direction even more while dealing with more darkness than ever. Ready your defenses. We’re returning to Sanctuary. A return to darkness Upon jumping into this newly realized Sanctuary during a hands-on session with an in-development PlayStation 5 version of the game, it’s clear that Diablo IV harkens back to the grim tone of the first two Diablo games. The world is more mature and grounded than Diablo III, adding to its renewed focus on horror and fear. Dead bodies paint the white snow during travels. You can hear howling cries of anger and distress when passing a populated town. A soft moonlight illuminates the hallowed grounds like a haunted spotlight. With a hefty thematic focus on hatred, how it consumes once hopeful hearts, and its corruption and consequences, it’s easy to quickly get immersed when all of these elements work in tandem. And naturally, it’s inevitable to feel the heroic urge to stop whatever caused all this pain in Sanctuary. Evolution of classic Diablo Diablo IV is a culmination of what made past Diablo entries so iconic and memorable. The bleak tone of the original, the more open world of the second, and the combat of the third all come together here. There are more gameplay options than ever, and the bits of small details and extra care applied to every nook and cranny of its mechanics make it one of the best entry points to the series. This is your adventure Diablo IV marks the first time in the series that you’re truly creating your own adventure. The open world of Sanctuary facilitates a personal journey filled with options. You can ignore the main story and lose yourself in exploring countless dungeons and strongholds, run into random local events, or help a needy lost spirit. Or, maybe you’re not in the mood for action and would rather bide your time and explore a peaceful wilderness to find resources to go home and craft with. The gameplay variety extends to playthroughs that all present wildly different results. The story is also nonlinear, meaning you’ll face many circumstances that may lead you down various roads. Yes, you still have to tackle the core beats to reach the game’s conclusion, but how you get there is up to you. A bold new world What’s a big adventure without a grand open world? Sanctuary, otherwise known as the Mortal Realm, is the name of this world that acts as the setting for the Diablo series. This new rendition is the series’s largest and most unrestricted world. There are numerous areas to explore, enemies to encounter, and NPCs to talk with. And it’s all seamlessly connected with no need for loading screens. You’re constantly trying to find a way through, often running into an optional roadblock at nearly every turn. Just be careful when going off the beaten path, as you’ll often find very powerful optional foes that will give you a real challenge. This world is a dark medieval playground full of hellish conflict. There are diverse environments with specific monsters and mobs to fight that carry vastly different abilities. For example, the Fractured Peaks’ Iceland Goatmen use ice magic. In the coasts and watery areas, the Drowned hold giant masts from sunken ships that lure in travelers with bells until they cast them into the sea. There is always more to discover here, and it can all be done at your leisure. Express yourself Diablo IV’s classes provide tons of player expression options regardless of what build you’re going for. The game starts by inviting you to choose between the worlds of ice, fire, or lightning magic. Each element features multiple paths to get to higher abilities, adding a uniqueness deeper than simple attack selection to characters. A new mechanic also offers players two class-exclusive upgrades to choose between after a skill upgrade. For example, with the Barbarian class, there’s the Violent Whirlwind attack, which allows players to cast Whirlwind for a long time. Or they could pick Furious Whirlwind, which inflicts a bleeding effect on anyone swept into the assault. Diablo IV brings unique progression mechanics to each class. For example, the Sorcerer has two unlockable skill enchantment slots that are unlocked during the campaign. When skills are upgraded, you get an enchantment upgrade which presents a special effect. For example, a fireball enchantment causes defeated enemies to explode into a fireball that damages surrounding foes. This new level of character customization gives players the most in-depth character growth in series history. The skill tree presents one of the core elements of character creation and progression in Diablo IV. Not only are things carefully and clearly contextualized, but upgrades start simple to better onboard you to the process. An upgrade path may begin with simple choices between fire or lightning, then gradually expand. “Do I upgrade towards burn or explosive fire damage?” “How can chaining attacks strengthen my offensive?” The skill tree gives players access to class-defining choices that change how a character is played. Visual customization is also new to Diablo IV, rather than being limited to a preset physical appearance. After selecting a class, you pick a body type, skin tone, hairstyle, markings, accessories, and more. Thankfully, you’ll be able to revise these choices anytime by visiting the wardrobe and changing armor and gear cosmetics. There’s also an item store to customize gear visuals along with altering your mounts and their gear. A shared world Whether you decide to go on this adventure solo or with a party, you’ll eventually run into other players via towns and event hubs. Unlike in the past, these interactions come organically. You may visit a town, run into a great world boss, and see other players doing the same without needing to open any menus. You can team up with these strangers for world events and world bosses, which are nigh impossible alone. Though you may initially meet these fellow adventurers as allies, there’s also a chance of running into those same players as foes in the Fields of Hatred, a dedicated player-vs-player zone found in different areas of Sanctuary. Play with your friends regardless of where Diablo IV supports online crossplay between platforms. Alongside couch co-op, you can also play with your friends no matter where they’re dungeon crawling. Modify your loot One of the best pieces of Diablo IV is how loot upgrades are handled. You can buff and mod items you find or craft at blacksmiths. Blizzard also confirmed that you can perform equipment-defining modifications, such as extracting legendary power from items and adding that power to other equipment. This also makes almost every piece of loot potentially essential and powerful. A good defense makes a good offense Diablo IV provides more options in the battle against demonic forces. Though enemies may surround you, you now have a new tool at your disposal with the evade mechanic. Evade acts as an evolution to Diablo III’s dodge roll. The maneuver (on a short cooldown) allows all players, regardless of the selected class, to dash a short distance in any direction to dodge enemies during battle. It can make you feel unstoppable when used perfectly in tandem with the classic Diablo hack n’ slash combat. And if you want to become more nimble in battle, then you can buff it with items like special boots that add a speed boost after it’s performed. A finely-tuned Diablo experience on console Diablo IV is the first in the series to be genuinely tailor-made for console players and was developed with the controller in mind. This results in mechanics such as the new evade being integrated into the PS5’s DualSense controller with dedicated buttons. Blizzard assures that it’s put ample work into making targeting enemies or boxes of treasure as simple and responsive as possible. Diablo IV launches on PS5 next year. View the full article

Earlier this year, we welcomed players back to the world of Moss with the release of Moss: Book II. The award-winning sequel—VR Awards “VR Game of the Year” winner and The Game Awards “Best VR/AR Game” nominee—adds to the fan favorite franchise by picking up right where the story of Moss left off nearly four years ago. Today, we’re excited to share that both Moss and Moss: Book II represent two premier launch day titles for PlayStation VR2 upon its release in February 2023. We have a lot to share with you about the enhanced versions of the games, but I’ll keep the lore details to ourselves to not spoil it for anyone. Similar to when Moss released on PS VR in 2018, Moss: Book II was greeted with positive reception, quickly ascending the ranks to sit alongside Moss as one of the all-time top-rated VR games. And while the story continues in the same world, the look and feel and the overall experience in Moss: Book II is dramatically enhanced from its predecessor. This was expected, as we continued to learn and leverage evolving technology throughout development to help us optimize the game players would later experience. Now, once we got our hands on PS VR2 hardware, we experimented and discovered new ways to draw players deeper into the world of Moss as they take on the first-person role of the Reader, the key ally of the hero Quill. Luckily, the platform’s two-controller setup, enhanced haptic feedback, visual improvements, and eye-tracking capabilities minimized the constraints previous hardware put on our team. And as we’ve said before when bringing our games to new platforms, we don’t just want to get them up and running on PS VR2 and call it a day, we spend our time on all aspects of the game, across graphics and gameplay, with the end goal being a truly unique and memorable experience. Here are a few ways we leveraged PS VR2 hardware to enhance players’ overall first-person immersion within the Moss franchise: Improved haptics: Players can now feel the effects of world-shaking events, damaging attacks, and movement throughout the world. The haptic feedback from PS VR2 Sense controllers and headset vibration gives the player a greater sense of presence and danger in the game, allowing them to feel even more attached to Quill, the game’s brave young hero who players partner with during the adventure. Two-controller Setup: Playing with two PS VR2 Sense controllers provides a natural feeling, allowing players to express themselves more freely in the world when reaching in to manipulate the environment, interact with Quill, or engage the weapon inventory system during battle. Adaptive triggers: Actions will feel distinct to players as they experience the tension and weight of virtual objects while grabbing and moving them within the world. Breakable pots and barrels now respond to the amount of force being used, breaking apart once they’re squeezed enough to overcome the trigger’s resistance. Eye tracking: Interactive objects now emit a subtle glow when looked at. This allows players to quickly spot interactive objects during puzzles and throughout the game. Eye tracking also informs Quill where players are looking so she can offer hints if she figures something out before them. Foveated rendering and increased field of view: Moss and Moss: Book II run at 90fps in 4K (2000×2040 per eye), even with the lighting and texture improvements. That, along with the larger field of view, gives players a deeper sense of immersion. Overall, the PS VR2 hardware makes it easier for us to truly transport players and immerse them in a captivating world of breathtaking environments, rich storytelling, and elevated level and combat design. All together, we believe it creates an experience you can’t find anywhere else. And in just a few short months, millions of new and existing fans will experience these enhanced versions of Moss and Moss: Book II on the latest VR hardware. PS VR2 is pushing the industry forward, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it. Players can now pre-order Moss and Moss: Book II for PlayStation VR2 on PS5. PlayStation Plus players can get 10% off their pre-order purchase. Those looking to pre-order both games can get 20% off by choosing the franchise bundle. This week, fans of two legendary games will enjoy the spoils of an amazing collaboration as Bungie and Ubisoft have joined forces to bring new content to both Destiny 2 and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla; content inspired by each other’s games and bridging the gap between these two fan-favorite universes. Play Video Coinciding with the launch of the new Season in Destiny 2, Season of the Seraph, Bungie is bringing a host of new content inspired by the Assassin’s Creed universe into Destiny 2. Guardians will have the chance to don new armor ornaments and cosmetics inspired by Ubisoft’s famed adventure franchise, including three new class-specific armor ornament sets: a Hunter ornament set inspired by Kassandra from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey; a powerful-looking Titan set inspired by Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Eivor; and a mysterious Warlock set inspired by the iconic Altaïr from the original Assassin’s Creed. In addition, Guardians will also be able to purchase a new ship, Sparrow, Ghost, and new finisher, all influenced by Assassin’s Creed lore. Today Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will bring new content inspired by Destiny 2. A new character pack will feature two new armor sets featuring Destiny characters Lord Shaxx and Saint-14 and two Swords inspired by a pair of iconic Exotic Destiny weapons: the Gjallarhorn Rocket Launcher and the Thorn Hand Cannon. In addition, a new weapons pack includes four new weapons that have been designed with Destiny’s subclasses in mind, including their own custom effects and gameplay perks. Bringing history (and the future) to life For the Bungie team, the opportunity to bring Assassin’s Creed’s world of historical action into the sci-fi fantasy universe of Destiny was a unique opportunity. That was especially true when it came to bringing a trio of iconic Assassin’s Creed characters to life as Guardians. “We had to consider how well each of the characters we chose would fit into the different Destiny Guardian classes,” says Bungie’s Ian McIntosh. “It was very easy to imagine Altaïr as a Warlock because his long robes perfectly fit the typical Warlock look in Destiny 2. We thought Eivor, being very tough and carrying a shield, would make a great Titan. And Kassandra works well as a Hunter because of a lot of similarities she has with that class—there’s the lightweight leather and cloth garb as well as her stealthy fighting style.” “The Assassin’s Creed character style, which I would describe as fantasy inspired by the fashion of the historical period in which each story takes place, has a lot of similarities to what you might see in Destiny 2,” McIntosh continues. “Both games draw inspiration from the real world and then put their own unique twist on it. The one missing ingredient though, which you always see in Destiny 2, was the science fiction element. For these armor ornaments, we mixed in a few additional hard surface armor components that have that classic Destiny look to them. The best example is the addition of Guardian helmets, which replace the human faces. “Of course we wanted to incorporate certain iconic design elements that help define each of the Destiny Guardian classes into these armor sets as well. For example, we gave the Kassandra Hunter armor a long cape, and we added a Warlock bond class item to the Altaïr set. To fit it into the Destiny lore a little better, we altered the design of the shield on the back of the Eivor Titan armor, so it looks more like a traditional Destiny Titan shield.” The team at Ubisoft had its own challenge: instead of taking Assassins into the future, they were taking Guardians into the past. Nowhere is that more apparent than with the new Gjallarhorn Sword that’s found in the new Character Pack in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. The challenge here wasn’t just to create a great-looking and functional weapon that Valhalla players would enjoy, it was to translate the famed Exotic Rocket Launcher from Destiny into an entirely new form—a great sword that was just as useful on the battlefield during raids in the 9th century as its projectile-firing counterpart was while taking down swarms of Hive or Vex. “We did a few design iterations and explored how the Rocket Launcher could be translated in the Assassin’s Creed world. Through the different designs, we asked ourselves how much of it can be a Sword and a Rocket Launcher while still preserving the wolf crest, barrel, and color palette since they need to be central in all the designs while still being functional. We were essentially making a gun-sword, so we paid attention to where the projectiles can logically come out off and still make sure that there’s a good balance between the blade and the barrel of the Sword,” says Ubisoft’s JP Tan. As the Ubisoft team put it, working on the Destiny character and weapons packs were labors of love. “We wanted to make sure that if we wanted to make this weapon, we would do it right. This is a love letter from us to those who enjoy the stories and experiences of these wonderful games,” says Ubisoft’s Ren Gomos. Destiny 2’s new Season, Season of the Seraph, is available now and will feature a new three-person matchmade activity called Heist Battlegrounds, as well as a new Exotic mission. In addition, the new Spire of the Watcher dungeon will launch in Destiny 2 on December 9. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s latest title update is available now. In addition to the new Destiny content, the update includes two free new quests. The first, titled The Last Chapter, will bring an intimate closure to the saga of Eivor the Wolf-Kissed. The second quest features Roshan from Assassin’s Creed Mirage, where you will see her in action with Eivor as they discover they share a common enemy. View the full article

God of War Ragnarök is now picture-ready! With our latest update, you will now have access to the Photo Mode feature. Since the release of photo mode in God of War (2018), we’ve been continuously amazed by the amount of talent and passion in the Video Game Photographer community that has gathered to the game. From quiet moments with Kratos and Atreus, to the elegant and brutal combat shots with ice and fire flying – the range of the photographers who take shots in God of War has been a constant source of inspiration for our team. With this latest update to God of War Ragnarök, we’re happy to finally be able to give you all access to Photo Mode in this game as well! God of War Ragnarök – Photo Mode Features Apply expressions to the following characters in a scene:Kratos, Atreus, Freya, Brok, Sindri, Tyr, Angrboda, Thor, and Thrúd All images in this article captured on PS5 Hide main or side characters in a scene Adjust camera controls with:Field of ViewFocal LengthCamera Roll Adjust shutter controls with:Depth of FieldFocus DistanceF-Stop Adjust brightness and filters with:Film GrainExposureFilter Intensity, with finer controls for Vibrance and Saturation Apply vignettes, borders, and logos To get you started, we’ve asked Santa Monica Studio Photo Mode aficionado and QA Lead Tim Ward for some tips (and amazing photos)! Photo Mode Tips Adjust the Filter Intensity, Vibrance, and Saturation on your desired filter for a wider range of colors. Be sure to add a vignette when appropriate to give your shot more depth. Don’t be afraid to roll the camera a little bit, especially when shooting combat. It can make your screenshots feel more dynamic and less like the camera is always shooting from a fixed horizontal position. If you like to take vertical shots, you can roll the camera 90 degrees to give yourself the much-needed headroom. Remember, lighting is everything! Your screenshots will really pop if the subject of your shot is properly lit. Know where your light source is when entering Photo Mode to give your subject proper visibility. Take your time looking for a shot you’re happy with. A lot of times, you can enter photo mode thinking of taking a specific shot only to find something else better during that moment. Explore with the camera and move about the scene and see what jumps out at you. We can’t wait to see the photos you take in God of War Ragnarök! PlayStation players, we’ve missed you! But now the skies are calling and your story is about to begin. We’re thrilled to welcome you to Sky: Children of the Light on December 6 when the game officially launches on PlayStation! Over 15 years ago, thatgamecompany forged a formative partnership with PlayStation. Our games fl0w, Flower, and Journey each experiment with how interactive gaming can communicate at an emotional level. We were humbled by Journey’s Game of the Year recognition and the accolades these games received, but perhaps most resonant were the individual stories players sent us from all over the world sharing how our games had touched their lives. Those stories made us ask how we can all better experience compassion through play. It moved us to push farther and develop Sky, a spiritual successor to Journey that creates a place for people of all backgrounds to share emotional connection and meaningful moments with their loved ones. We are so proud of the vibrant global community that has flourished in Sky, and our players constantly amaze and inspire us! One of our community members, SADist, made an animatic that captured the heart of what a Sky player sees and feels. We made the trailer above in turn based on that animatic, and we hope it faithfully recreates what we all—player and dev alike—have seen and felt in Sky. A touching social experience Find your place in Sky through adventure, exploration, and the people you meet. Follow where birds beckon and bells ring, and seek peaceful scenery and intriguing surprises off the beaten path. Ascend through the clouds, play your own music, help out another traveler, or take the hand of a fellow Child of the Light who wants to show you their favorite shortcut. A path rises to meet everyone who enters the world of Sky. Embark on a musical voyage in the Season of AURORA Concert Music is woven through Sky, guiding and accompanying players through light and dark. It’s always been a vital part of the game, but now after 18 months of development and fine-tuning our proprietary game engine, we’re getting ready to deliver a new way for music to take our players into something more intense and powerful than what’s been done before in games: On December 8 at 8:30 pm PT, we’re premiering a concert in collaboration with Norwegian music artist AURORA! We’re opening the world’s largest performance venue for the occasion so that millions of players can take part in this musical voyage together, and we’ve saved a seat for everybody. If you’ve played Sky before, you’ve heard AURORA’s voice on our original soundtrack. She’s also best known internationally for her hits “Runaway,” “Cure for Me,” “Running with the Wolves,” and her ethereal vocals in Frozen II‘s “Into the Unknown.” Beginning on December 8, her music invites you to be transformed within Sky itself. Connect with the exuberant multitude of players from across the globe, and with AURORA as she performs songs including “Exhale Inhale,” “Runaway,” “Warrior,” and more to transport you on a journey that goes far beyond any other concert experience in a game. The concert experience isn’t limited to the set list either—the venue also has plenty to do before and after the show. Learn songs with in-game instruments (all skill levels encouraged!), meet some friendly creatures offering to take you on a tour, and find a room with a serene sound bath where AURORA herself will guide you in restorative relaxation. Everyone is welcome! No tickets, purchases, or even minimum game progress is needed. And if you miss the premiere on the 8, don’t worry—it will be available multiple times a day through January 2 2023! Celebrate the PlayStation launch with exclusive Journey cosmetics To commemorate this new launch, a specially themed Journey Pack will be offered for purchase for those joining us on PlayStation. Exclusive to PlayStation players, this bundle comes with a cape, hood, and mask, featuring carefully re-created designs that may be familiar if you’ve seen the wayfarers who once traversed desert sands. On a nostalgic note, the mask includes a unique ability: wearing it grants your Sky Child a Journey-inspired voice when you call! A place where everyone is stronger together When we first started our studio, we had little idea how much our efforts to push emotional boundaries in games would still reverberate today. We’re so excited to bring our latest adventure to the platform where we began. First we were petals in the wind, then we were wayfarers gliding over sand dunes, and now we’re soaring together through the clouds. We can’t wait to see you in the skies on December 6!
