  1. Hello again PlayStation fans! Lots of you are familiar with what we’ve shown of Resident Evil 7 so far, from the first phone ring of the reveal trailer to the desperation of a mysterious woman on a frantic escape from a derelict mansion. Now we’re back with an exciting and disturbing new trailer, news about the RE7 Teaser: Beginning Hour demo, and more! More Resident Evil 7 Screens We’ve been expanding upon the world of Resident Evil 7 and the mysterious plantation house in Louisiana in which the game takes place, hinting at the terrors that lie within, and many of you have had the chance to experience these horrors for yourself by playing the Resident Evil 7 Teaser: Beginning Hour demo. Of course, you know I’m here to talk about more than that… We’ve just announced a new update for the demo, the Twilight version update, which expands on what you can do and explore. The update will be available starting tomorrow, September 15th. That’s not all – this demo will be available for every PlayStation 4 user, meaning that PlayStation Plus is no longer required to gain access to the plantation house and dig in to the mansion’s mysteries. Now is your chance to investigate on your own, as both newcomers and veterans of Beginning Hour will be able to see what’s changed in the run-down rooms and decrepit corridors. We’ve also got some exciting news about the Digital Deluxe version of the game available for pre-order on PSN for North America. While the Digital Deluxe edition previously offered the game and a season pass for two additional story episodes for $79.99 in North America, we’ll be upgrading that version with an additional playable story episode to the mix starting tomorrow, and shifting the price to $89.99. If you’ve already pre-ordered the deluxe edition on the North American PS Store, there’s nothing to worry about; your pre-order will be automatically upgraded at no additional charge. In addition, all pre-order customers of either the standard or deluxe versions will get a bunch of bonuses, such as the Survival Pack: Recovery Set. This set includes consumable healing items to help you endure the horrors that await (and don’t worry, these consumables are available again each time you start a new game). Also included is a mysterious in-game Lucky Coin item, as well as access to the deviously difficult Madhouse mode, normally unlocked after completing the game once. On top of all that, all PS4 pre-orders on the PlayStation Store will instantly receive a dynamic theme for their PS4. So head over to PS Store and pre-order RE7 now! And don’t forget: Resident Evil 7 biohazard will be fully playable in the included optional PlayStation VR mode to provide a fully immersive experience when fear comes home on January 24th, 2017. 2. Hello there, PlayStation.Blog readers! We’re getting more and more excited as release day approaches, and so today we’re sharing a bit of that excitement with the release of a new dev diary video. This time we’re looking at some of the ways we created the immersive and believable VR world of Robinson: The Journey. Many elements have played a role in building the Robinson universe, but one thing that stood out more than anything was our attention to detail. Since the world of Robinson is littered with debris from the crashed spaceship Esmeralda, we obsessed over every manmade and natural object in the world and handcrafted each item with an extensive backstory, design, and function in mind. This ranges from a simple food box with correct nutritional facts written on it to the evacuation plan of an 11 kilometer long spaceship. But our visuals weren’t the only thing that needed a lot of attention to detail. Sound is just as important in creating a convincing VR world. If, for example, you see a bird take off — not only can you actually hear that it is getting farther and farther away, you can also hear in which direction it is flying — and all of these sounds create realistic echoes. Each of these elements make the environments of Robinson feel like a part of a living, breathing world — and we can’t wait for you to get lost in it! View the full article
  3. Hello, everyone! My name is David Leon, and I’m the studio head of Lince Works, the studio behind Aragami. Today we want to announce our release date. Here it goes… Aragami is coming on October 4! To us, this is a huge deal — we’ve been working on Aragami for over two years, and finally we will be able to share our game with PS4 fans worldwide. In case you haven’t heard about our game, Aragami is a third-person stealth game in which you have the power to control the shadows. As Aragami, you take on the role of an undead assassin who was brought back to life by Yamiko — a princess that is imprisoned by Kaiyo, the army of light. She is the key to bringing you back to life, and also the key to figuring out your past. Using your shadow powers, you will be able to teleport between shadows, create shadow paths to avoid detection by enemies, create shadow decoys and weapons, and even summon shadow creatures that will strangle or decapitate your enemies. We’ve catered the game to two distinct playstyles — Ghosts and Demons. Ghosts are the type of players that prefer to be silent assassins that leave no traces behind. Demons, on the other hand, are brutal killing machines that love to vanquish every enemy in the area. Whichever playstyle you choose, you will not be punished for your choice, and if you want, you can mix and match your styles for whatever the occasion calls. With Aragami, we really wanted to bring that feeling of stealth back into games. Over the last few years, we feel the genre has become a bit watered down. Being spotted by an enemy is no longer cause for an alarm — it doesn’t really matter anymore. We want to change that. We want players to feel real tension — calculating your next move, planning your attack wisely, and using your head as well as your reflexes. Aragami will give you around 8-10 hours of gameplay, more if you want to find all the collectibles. You will also have the chance to play Aragami with your friend in online co-op. And to all the trophy hunters — yes, there is a Platinum trophy to collect! Aragami will be available at retail and at PlayStation Store, thanks to our friends at Merge Games Publishing. And there is also a collector’s edition available as well (big thanks to them!). Thank you for reading and letting us share the news! We are super excited by all of this, and I hope that you guys felt a bit of excitement too. We hope to see you guys in Aragami’s world on October 4! Plus, if you have any comments, feedback, or questions — don’t be shy and let us know what you think below in the comments! View the full article
  4. Creating the music and sound effects for Battlezone was both an honor and a treat for our Audio Lead Graham Gatheral. The 1980s was a formative time for him, and he and the audio team are still very much into video games, music, and film from that era, such as Blade Runner, Tron, and — of course — the original Battlezone. Graham remembers playing the Atari 2600 port when it first came out. As it is for many of us at Rebellion, the original Battlezone was one of the first video games he played. Needless to say, he was delighted to be given the opportunity to work on this project! So we asked Graham: What was your approach to the sound and music in Battlezone? “The pitch was fairly simple: we wanted to pay homage to the music and sound of the 1980s, but stay in line with the updated visual aesthetic of Battlezone on PSVR, and the modernity of virtual reality. In practice, it wasn’t that simple. A lot of research, experimentation, effects processing, and iteration was required to capture that warm, nostalgic feeling of the 80s, suited and booted for 2016.†The InfluencesWe feel our art team has done such a great job with the retro-futuristic look of Battlezone, with its neon world and bold, blocky shapes. With that art style, the source DNA and the short, sharp nature of the missions, Graham had a clear idea of how he wanted the music to sound. “I began revisiting a lot of the stuff I listened to from the era — 80’s electro, Detroit techno, things like Cybotron and Model 500. I wanted Battlezone to feel pumping, arcadey — capturing the atmosphere of the lit-up cabinets, and the bright action flickering across rows and rows of displays.†Let’s do the time warp!“Walking into my studio at the moment is like stepping into the 80s! There is a bunch of equipment in there directly from the era, mostly stuff I’ve acquired over the years. The TR-606 drum machine, for example, was released in 1981 just a year after the original Battlezone. You can also see the Roland SH-09 analogue synthesizer in these photos — that’s actually from the same year as Battlezone.†“I used the synthesizers and drum machines as raw material sources. I would make a pattern on the SH-09 and TR-606 — think of that as the raw, authentic 80s material — and run it through a bunch of modern plug-ins, adding effects, reverbs, tape delay… all kinds of sound mangling to bring out that iconic analogue warmth and energy.†Here’s a bespoke piece we created for one of the game’s early trailers, based on the music of Battlezone: The process of creating authentic yet modernized material went to another level with the sound effects. “In 80’s games, sounds were typically generated using dedicated synthesizer chips. The sounds were generated on the fly, rather than being played back like modern sample-based SFX. That distinctive low-res, 8-bit sound is a key component of our nostalgia for that period. “I thought it would be cool to, wherever possible, use 80s technology to generate SFX in Battlezone. HUD and GUI sounds were particularly good candidates for this — the front end menu sounds, for example. Using a chip emulator — a piece of software that can emulate the SFX of 100s of arcade cabinet and console chips — we created digital reproductions of SFX from the era. We then combined this source material with other, more spectrally rich synthesizer recordings to create sound effects that retained an 80’s authenticity, yet with a modern twist.†To give you an idea, listen to a few example effects created using this process in the playlist above. VR for Your EarsOf course, our audio team was creating sounds and music for a brand new platform, and the immersive nature of VR required a new approach in our sound strategy. “Battlezone uses binaural processing to position sound effects 360 degrees around the player. It’s a highly accurate technique for 3D audio and it’s absolutely perfect for virtual reality, because it delivers a level of immersion in the audio that’s consistent with the graphical output of PlayStation VR.†Of course it is a bit more extra work to make it all gel, but we hope you’ll agree it’s been worth it! The End Result“I’m really proud to be a part of this team, it’s the first VR game we’re putting out, and it’s an exciting new frontier with new challenges!†When you play Battlezone, we hope the music and SFX play a part in making the game world as stirring and immersive as possible. We hope you’ll feel like you’re back in those dark, neon-lit arcades, with all the excitement of playing the newest cabinet. Except this time you’ll really be in it, right inside the tank, shooting down enemies and saving the world, all to a cacophony of beeps, bloops, and beats! 8. You can break the design of Battlezone down into two core components: feel and structure. The feel I wanted to capture was my memory of the original arcade game; exhilarating, futuristic, dangerous and fluid. If we achieved nothing else, moving and shooting in our Battlezone had to feel cool, skilful and completely intuitive. At the same time, we were determined to a make a full game with depth. We wanted to reward repeated plays and deliver more than just a cool action experience. To achieve that, we needed a ‘meta’ structure that held the game together through a campaign. It had to fit with the core arcade gameplay but offer long-term goals and a degree of tactical and strategic decision making. The brilliant vertical-scroller Downwell won’t seem obvious inspiration for a futuristic tank combat game, but I’ve certainly been influenced by how it adds depth and replayability to a pure arcade experience. It does that through a light rogue-like structure. Downwell’s beautifully simplified upgrade system is perfectly in keeping with the immediacy of arcade games, and it keeps things interesting by randomly mixing up the upgrades and weapons it offers up. The choices you make at this meta-level can substantially shift the micro-level of moment-to-moment gameplay. FTL is another classic example of using a procedurally-generated approach to achieve not just replay value but a sense of genuine exploration and danger. I love the light touch of its world-building and emergent narrative. It leaves plenty of space for your imagination to fill in the blanks, meaning there are no ponderous cut scenes getting in the way. FTL, then, gave us another of our benchmarks for both the structural and narrative components of Battlezone’s campaign. Again, an unusual influence, but I think when you play Battlezone you’ll see – just like FTL – our campaign has a lot going on beneath the surface. Another aspect of FTL which informed the VR-specific design of Battlezone is how it breaks the experience up into small chunks of gameplay. In FTL you can make satisfying progress in just a five-minute blast, or string several missions together to build an emergent narrative. We’ve wanted to ensure that Battlezone would a VR experience that felt welcoming to all comers, so we’ve taken the same structural approach. With all that in mind, how does Battlezone actually work? Well, the campaign plays out on a procedurally generated map. We randomly mix up the distribution of environments and missions for each campaign and within each mission, the spawn locations and enemy types are also randomised based on your progress through the campaign. On top of that, the set of available weapons and equipment to buy differ with each play-through, and with each attempt you’ll unlock a greater range of more powerful tools to bring to the battlefield. The end result is a Battlezone campaign which offers a new challenge every time you play. There are tactics and ways to approach each mission that you’ll learn as you go, but you’ll still enter each mission not knowing exactly what to expect. We want there to be a sense of risk to the ‘meta’ decisions you make: your loadout and the route you take across the map. The incredible reception we’ve had from people who’ve played our demo gives me confidence that we’ve achieved our aims for the arcade feel, and that we’re doing justice to the Battlezone licence. As developers, it’s a good indicator of the structure’s success that we’re still genuinely enjoying playing the campaign after all these months – continuing to get more out of it by trying out new tactics and making interesting strategic decisions. So when Battlezone launches alongside PlayStation VR on October 13th, I very much hope it’ll keep you hooked like it has us. We hope you’ve been enjoying all the Battlezone content this week! Be sure to head to battlezone.com for more info, and follow us on Twitter at @BattlezoneVR and @Rebellion. View the full article

  10. The next major system software update for PS4, version 4.00 (codenamed Shingen), will be available tomorrow. This update brings a refreshed system UI, Folder organization, updates to the Quick Menu and Share Menu, Library improvements, and much more! We detailed a number of the new features making their way to PS4 prior to the beta program last month, but we wanted to share some additional information on other changes that you’ll see after updating your system. Quick Menu — MusicIn addition to updating the Quick Menu to make it easier to access without leaving your game by having it cover only a portion of the screen and making it more customizable, we’ve also added several new items to the menu. One new addition to the Quick Menu that wasn’t featured in the beta program is an enhanced Music section to allow you to discover, play, and control Spotify without needing to open the app. From the Music section of the Quick Menu you’ll now be able to play, pause, skip, shuffle, repeat and save songs. The Music section also allows you to discover recommended playlists for the game you’re playing and view your saved Spotify playlists and songs. When you select a playlist, you’ll be able to see all upcoming songs and choose to play all, or select an individual song to listen to from that playlist. The PlayStation Music team and Spotify have been working with your favorite game creators to create playlists to enhance your gameplay. Follow PlayStation Music on Spotify to get the latest gaming playlists first. PlayStation 4 Pro UpdatesIn anticipation of the release of PS4 Pro on November 10, 2016, we’re adding a number of features that will support the system’s ability to output high-resolution content. This update will enable the following on PS4 Pro: 1080p streaming for Remote Play on PC/Mac and compatible Xperia devices 1080p streaming for Share Play 1080p 30/60fps live broadcasting on YouTube 1080p 30fps live broadcasting on Twitch High Dynamic Range (HDR)When we announced PS4 Pro and the new slimmer PS4 last week, we also announced that all PlayStation 4 systems — back to the very first console sold in 2013 — would be HDR capable. After updating your system to version 4.00, you’ll see HDR settings in the Video Output Settings and be ready to enjoy HDR gaming and entertainment content once it’s available on any PS4 system you own. Of course, you’ll need an HDR compatible display as well. What’s NewWhat’s New has been redesigned and now includes more information about what your friends have been doing on PS4. The left column includes the new Activity Feed, which has larger images and easily accessible options to like, comment, or reshare. The right column includes sections for Now Playing, Trending, Players You May Know, and Who to Follow. Content Info ScreenWe’ve given a similar redesign to the content info screen, which you can access by pressing down on a game tile while on the home screen. You’ll be able to easily select from a variety of options to view a game’s Overview, Trending media, Friends and Communities, Activities, and related PlayStation Store content. Data Transfer to New PS4In order to make it easier to get all of your data from one PS4 to another, especially if you upgrade to PS4 Pro, we’ve added the ability to transfer data over a wired LAN connection. You can transfer games, user info, and saved data. Of course, you can re-download content and transfer saves through the cloud, but the LAN transfer should be much faster and easier. Those are just some of the more prominent additions making their way to PS4 in this update, but there are a number of other refinements to the system software overall. Please enjoy! 11. When it comes to VR, seeing is believing. It’s hard to get a sense of the magical worlds that VR transports you to by just reading about the games, or seeing photos and videos. For that reason, we’re including a free demo disc in each retail PlayStation VR unit (both the launch bundle and core unit) that’s jam-packed with content. The disc includes demos of entertainment and gaming content spanning across a wide variety of diverse genres. That way, you can get a sense of the content you enjoy the most and can even click to purchase and download the game after trying the demo. Also, if your friends have a PS4 system but have not played PS VR yet, just bring your PS VR and demo disc over to their place so they can have a go! Now without further ado, here’s what you get on the disc: Allumette (Penrose) Battlezone (Rebellion) DriveClub VR (SIE WWS) Eve: Valkyrie (CCP Games) Gnog (KO_OP) Harmonix Music VR (Harmonix Music Systems) Headmaster (Frame Interactive) Here They Lie (SIE WWS) Job Simulator (Owlchemy Labs) PlayStation VR Worlds (SIE WWS) Resident Evil VII biohazard — Kitchen Teaser (Capcom CO., LTD.) Rez Infinite (Enhance Games) Rigs Mechanized Combat League (SIE WWS) Thumper (Drool) Tumble VR (SIE WWS) Until Dawn: Rush of Blood (SIE WWS) Wayward Sky (Uber Entertainment) Within (Within) The demo disc will also be available for download at PlayStation Store for free after PS VR launches. Please note, content included in the demo disc differs across countries and regions. The demo disc with the above content will be included in retail PS VR units in the US and Canada. 12. Let me take you back 16 months to E3 2015 — we’ve just introduced Battlezone for PlayStation VR, and we’re calling it the return of “the father of VR gaming.†Was that a little bombastic? …Maybe. Now let’s go back 36 years to a classic arcade. Sticky carpets, cigarette burns on the cabinets, and a medley of beeps and bloops. My brother and I are there and we’re playing the original Battlezone. I’m putting my face right up against the cabinet’s periscope display, and for the life of me it feels like I’m there in the game’s green vector tank, shooting down the enemy. The 1980 Battlezone was really trying to put you in the game, so much so that it arguably became the first ever first-person shooter. Before Battlezone came along, games didn’t really do first-person perspectives and reticules. So maybe we weren’t being bombastic enough? Fourteen years later my brother Chris and I released our breakthrough game, Alien vs. Predator for the Atari Jaguar — a first-person shooter that maybe wouldn’t have existed without Battlezone. It’s hard to truly overstate its influence on modern gaming, let alone VR gaming. If I could show my 1980 self the Battlezone we’ve created, I don’t think he’d believe me. But I’d tell him it was his admiration of the original Battlezone that’s made our vision a reality. It was because of him I found myself on the top floor of a very tall New York building in 2013, where we bid for and acquired the Battlezone IP. In many ways it was a perfect storm; we had this license that had inspired us as game makers, meanwhile the next-gen of VR was starting to become a reality. It made sense to us. Here was this game that wanted to put you in its world, and now we really could. And now, Battlezone and PlayStation VR are nearly here. It’s incredibly exciting for all of us here at Rebellion. But on a personal level, it’s genuinely momentous to bring Battlezone to life like this. I imagine for some of you, this blog post is your introduction to Battlezone. We’ll be talking about the game here in much more detail throughout the week — what it’s like to play mission-to-mission, the depth of the campaign, and things we’ve not yet announced! So please do stay tuned — there is plenty, plenty more to come, and if you’re not yet convinced, we want to show you why we believe Battlezone is going to be a Day 1 must-buy when PlayStation VR launches on October 13. But since I’ve talked today about what inspired us to bring our game to life, I’d like to touch on the look of Battlezone. If you’re one of those seeing the game for the first time, I imagine you might be thinking of the movie Tron — we’ve heard that comparison a lot before! But did you know Tron was actually influenced by the original Battlezone — yes, Battlezone came first! With Battlezone we wanted to create something that felt like its own reality, something that feels virtual, even digital. I think our art team’s done an amazing job — we’ve got so many gorgeous stills of the game that don’t even do it justice of what it’s like to be inside our tank and feel the sense of scale and wonder of our retro-futuristic world. To us, we think of the game’s world as a digital unreality. Rather than trying to recreate real life, we are transporting you to another world, something that feels virtual, game-like, and atmospheric in its own right — like the original did. When you try Battlezone on PlayStation VR for the first time, I hope you’ll feel that same all-encompassing feeling I felt 36 years ago — like you were actually inside the galaxy’s most powerful tank. Thank you for reading and we can’t wait to unveil more this week. View the full article
  13. The Last Guardian development team is fast approaching major milestones in production and has made the tough decision to delay the release of The Last Guardian a few weeks. The Last Guardian will launch on December 6, 2016. Fumito Ueda, gen DESIGN and JAPAN Studio have a wonderful vision for The Last Guardian’s touching, emotional journey of friendship and trust, and we want to deliver the most polished experience possible for our fans who have supported us for so long. A delay is a difficult decision, particularly with this game, but we have encountered more bugs than anticipated while in the final stages of development. To ensure that The Last Guardian delivers on the experience that the game’s creators have envisioned, we need to take the extra time to work on those issues. Our development continues to push itself to the fullest and we look forward to revealing new content toward launch. We appreciate your continued support. View the full article

  15. Hello everyone! I’m Jeff Gregg, Lead Designer on World of Tanks for PS4. The team has been working hard on features and elements surrounding the 100 Year Anniversary of Tanks, and we’re super excited to share some of this with you! First of all, celebrating 100 Years of Tanks is obviously a big milestone for us. For me personally it’s a reminder of how far we’ve come both “in real life†and in the game itself; these behemoths have had incredible influence on history. From the first Mark I tank that rolled across Europe to the current roster of vehicles in the game, each tank has had an impact on both me and all of the development team. We take great pride in bringing these vehicles to the players in our community and love to see them used in digital combat all across the world. To celebrate this anniversary, the team has worked on special custom operations, a new Centennial T95 tank for players to acquire, and a brand new event mode featuring the Mark I tank itself. For those who don’t know, the Mark I was the first vehicle to be given the moniker “tank.†Its primary job was designed to break through defensive lines and traverse across trenches while protecting soldiers from enemy fire. It was big, noisy, slow, and terrifying when it appeared on the battlefield. The development team spent considerable time deciding how to bring this vehicle to the game. We studied how this tank was meant to be used and what it did historically; balancing these elements with what would be fun. Since the Mark I never fought per-se, we had to imagine how a battle of Mark I tanks would go. We leaned on classic World War I trench warfare engagements. Keeping your vehicle protected from fire, risking rushes across no-man’s-land, and covering your team’s flanks all play into the Mark I battles and are hallmarks of how World War I was fought. But that still didn’t satisfy us; we needed something more. So we looked to you, our community. Our players are very vocal and have lots of great ideas. We listened to them and poured through feedback on previous events such as the Lunar Tank (on the moon) and the TOG Boat. After analyzing what we wanted to do and what we thought you the player would want to play, we decided this Mark I tank event needed something extra special to stand out. To that end we gave the Mark I a flame-thrower for intense close-quarters battle. Combining this new weapon that could be replenished via pickups to Mark I tank combat turned out to be a great combination. We can’t wait to hear what you think! We are very excited to continue to celebrate the 100 Years of Tanks with you all. I’m grateful to be part of this game, and love that we can honor our collective history while playing games together and having fun. View the full article

  17. PlayStation is introducing a new choice for console gamers with PS4 Pro, a powerful addition to the PS4 family. It’s designed to offer heightened gaming experiences, whether via your existing HDTV or a new 4K TV. PS4 Pro | PlayStation.com With its increased performance over the standard PS4, PS4 Pro represents a first for PlayStation — and in many ways, for console gaming. We’re excited by this vision, but we know many of you will have questions. That’s why we’ve built our latest Ultimate FAQ below. This FAQ will serve as a living document, and we’ll continue to add new questions, details, and specifics leading up to launch November 10 in North America. If you have questions that aren’t addressed, leave them in the comments below and we’ll add ‘em to the list. In the meantime: it’s time to get to know PS4 Pro! PS4 Pro: Basic Questions Q: What is PS4 Pro? PS4 Pro is a high-end version of PS4 that is capable of outputting 4K graphics, HDR support, smoother and more stable framerates, and 4K video streaming. Upon its launch, PS4 Pro will make supported PS4 games look better and run more smoothly, while giving developers an upgraded toolset to create even richer, more detailed game worlds. How these powerful new tools are used is up to individual developers and the experience they are creating. You may have seen some of these examples during PlayStation Meeting 2016. It’s important to note that PS4 Pro is not another generation of console. It won’t make your current PS4 games obsolete, and it won’t split the PS4 player base. PS4 Pro is very much a part of the PS4 family. Q: When will PS4 Pro be available, where, and for how much? PS4 Pro will launch in the US and Canada on November 10 for a suggested retail price of $399.99 USD ($499.99 CAD). Q: Will PS4 Pro have separate or exclusive games? There will not be any PS4 Pro-exclusive games. Because PS4 Pro and the standard PS4 are members of the same family, both systems will be fully compatible with all past, present, and future PS4 titles, including PlayStation VR. All PS4 games are PS4 Pro games, and vice-versa. Following PS4 Pro’s launch on November 10 in North America, virtually all new PS4 game releases moving forward will be able to take advantage of PS4 Pro capabilities on day one, or in some cases shortly after launch via a free downloadable update. Some titles previously released will be updated to take advantage of PS4 Pro features, including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, The Last of Us Remastered, Infamous Second Son, Shadow of Mordor, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and more. Q: Will all PS4 games be compatible with PS4 Pro? Yes, all existing PS4 games are fully compatible with PS4 Pro. Developers are able to add PS4 Pro enhancements to previously released PS4 games via a free downloadable update if they choose to. Q: Will SIE continue to sell and support the standard PS4? Yes. PS4 Pro is an evolution of the PS4 generation platform, which will continue to include the standard PS4 system. PS4 Pro was designed for gamers who want to be at the forefront of gaming innovation. Whether you decide to purchase the new system or continue playing on the standard PS4 system, you’ll enjoy the same games that make PlayStation the best place to play. Q: Will PS4 Pro require a 4K TV? No. PS4 Pro can display much higher resolutions than the standard PS4 when using a 4K TV. But if you own an HDTV (720p, 1080i, 1080p), PS4 Pro can still improve your gaming experience. Q: What benefits does PS4 Pro provide when played on a non-4K HDTV? PS4 Pro offers benefits even if you play on a HDTV that isn’t 4K. Depending on how the developer chooses to use the increased processing power, games with PS4 Pro support are able to render higher or more consistent framerates, increased environmental and character model detail, improved overall visual quality, and other related visual enhancements. For a look at how games are using the power of PS4 Pro, watch some of the first game footage on our YouTube page. Additionally, PS4 games that render below native 1080p (maximum quality for HD TVs) on the standard PS4 can be elevated to render at full native 1080p on an HDTV. See below for a chart detailing how PS4 Pro will display based on different TV types. 4K content2K or less than 1080p content2K TVOptimized to 1080pIf less than 1080p, upscale to 1080p4K TVIf 4K (2160p), display as isUpscale to 4K (2160p)4K/HDR TVIf 4K (2160p), display as is If content is HDR supported, display in HDRUpscale to 4K (2160p) If content is HDR supported, display in HDRQ: What resolutions does PS4 Pro support? On 4K TVs, games are capable of running at up to 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels, also known as “2160pâ€) resolution. On HDTVs, games will run at 1080p. Q: Will PS4 Pro be compatible with my existing PS4 downloaded games, saved data, and PlayStation Network Friend lists? Yes. PS4 Pro exists in the same digital ecosystem as the standard PS4 in all regards; two PS4 console systems, one PlayStation Network, one PS4 community. This means you can start playing a game on your PS4 Pro, upload the saved data to online storage using PS Plus (sold separately), and pick up your progress on a standard PS4 in another room. It also means that all content and saved data that you already own on PS4 are fully compatible with PS4 Pro on day one. Q: What if I already own a standard PS4? Is there an easy way to transfer my games, saved data, and Share captured content from a standard PS4 to PS4 Pro? Yes. You will be able to copy your games, saved data, captured videos and screenshots, system settings, and other content from a standard PS4 to PS4 Pro using a standard Ethernet cable. This process will also work from standard PS4 to standard PS4, PS4 Pro to standard PS4, and PS4 Pro to PS4 Pro provided that both units have system software update 4.00 or higher installed, and the same PSN account is signed into both systems. Alternatively, you can log-into PSN with your PS4 Pro, access your games and content library, and re-download your previously purchased games and content. Of course, your saved data in online storage will transfer as well. Q: Will the PS4 Pro system introduce any improvements to DUALSHOCK 4? The latest version of DUALSHOCK 4 will be included with PS4 Pro, as well as the new slimmer standard PS4. But it does not introduce any significant new functionality. The new DUALSHOCK 4 allows the light from the light bar to emit on the touch pad, making a new luminous line that illuminates in the same color as that of the light bar. It also supports USB communication in addition to Bluetooth communication. Existing DUALSHOCK 4 controllers going back to the launch of PS4 are fully supported on PS4 Pro; the updated DUALSHOCK 4 will, in turn, be fully supported by every PS4 model. PS4 Pro: Technical SpecificationsQ: How does PS4 Pro compare to the standard PS4? PS4 Pro is significantly more powerful than the standard PS4 model. PS4 Pro’s advanced graphics processor unit incorporates many features from AMD’s latest “Polaris†architecture, as well as some fully custom hardware innovations, and is considerably more powerful than the GPU included in the standard PS4. All in all, this increase in processing power enables developers to tap into far more demanding visual features for PS4 Pro owners, including smoother or more stable framerates, support for 4K rendering, advanced graphics features, and more. Q: What video output settings does PS4 Pro support? At launch, PS4 Pro supports all of the HD video output settings found on the standard PS4. Notably, PS4 Pro introduces 4K output, with settings for both 2160p YUV420 and 2160p RGB (recommended if your TV supports it) at up to 60 frames per second when using a supported 4K TV and Premium HDMI (aka HDMI 2.0) cable. Q: Does PS4 Pro support High Dynamic Range (HDR)? Yes, PS4 Pro is fully compatible with the HDR10 specification at launch. HDR10 is a widely supported HDR format embraced by major entertainment companies. Q: What is HDR? High Dynamic Range, or HDR, is an emerging display standard that allows for massively increased color depth and greater contrast compared to Standard Dynamic Range, the decades-old specification currently employed by traditional HDTVs. In general, HDR-enabled content played on an HDR-compatible TV produces a noticeably fuller, richer image, that’s closer to what the eye naturally sees. That means much deeper black levels that retain finer details; brighter, more dazzling highlights; and a much wider color spectrum than is possible on older HDTV technology. It’s actually impossible to demonstrate the true benefits of HDR technology here because you need an HDR-enabled screen and content to experience it. You can, however, watch this video from Sony that shows some simulated before-and-after scenes. Q: Will PS4 Pro include support for Dolby Vision HDR? There are currently no plans to support Dolby Vision. Q: Does PS4 Pro require any specialized equipment? Only if you want to experience 4K and HDR. Otherwise, no. Like the standard PS4, PS4 Pro fully supports existing HD TVs (720p / 1080i / 1080p). PS4 Pro can also output a 4K signal on supported 4K TVs when using a Premium HDMI cable (one will be included with PS4 Pro). To enjoy HDR features, you’ll need an HDTV that’s compatible with the HDR10 format, and HDR10-enabled games or content. Q: Outside of higher gaming performance, 4K TV features, and support for 4K video streaming, are there any other benefits to PS4 Pro? Yes. PS4 Pro will come standard with a 1TB HDD, faster Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac), and a third USB 3.1 Gen.1 port on the rear of the unit. PS4 Pro’s more powerful hardware can also benefit PlayStation VR games, enhance streaming features such as Share Play and Remote Play, and enable higher resolution output for media captured using the Share button. In most other ways, PS4 Pro will be very similar to the standard PS4. This includes the user interface and functionality. Q: Why do I need a Premium HDMI cable for using PS4 Pro on my 4K TV? For maximum quality, you’ll need a PS4 Pro system, a 4K TV with a Premium HDMI input port (often marked in blue), and a Premium HDMI cable. A Premium HDMI cable is included with PS4 Pro, but those who need to purchase a longer cable should remember to get one that meets the Premium HDMI spec. The newer Premium HDMI format can display a 4K signal at up to 60 frames per second (60Hz). Older High Speed HDMI cables (aka HDMI 1.4) can technically display a 4K signal on a 4K TV, but the performance will be limited to just 30 frames per second (30Hz). Q: Is there anything else I need to know about PS4 Pro support on my 4K TV? Given that 4K display standards and HDR features are still cutting edge, we recommend that you carefully consult your 4K TV’s manual and other reference materials to fully understand its capabilities. Q: Will PS4 Pro support PlayStation VR? PS4 Pro will fully support PlayStation VR just like the standard PS4. It’s important to note that PlayStation VR’s integrated display tops out at 1920 x 1080; it does not support 4K output. Also, the PS VR headset does not support HDR features. That said, PS4 Pro’s upgraded processing power will give VR developers the ability to enhance their experiences with higher quality graphics, smoother or more stable framerates, and visual improvements in supported games. Developers can also choose to add PS4 Pro features to PS VR games post launch via a free downloadable update. Q: Which PS VR games will support PS4 Pro features? As neither PS VR nor PS4 Pro has launched at the time of publication, we’ll wait until closer to PS4 Pro’s launch to begin confirming these titles. 4K EntertainmentQ: Does PS4 Pro support Ultra 4K Blu-ray Discs? No, PS4 Pro’s internal Blu-ray drive does not support the new Ultra 4K Blu-ray Disc format. It supports the same Blu-ray Disc specs as the standard PS4. The Blu-ray Disc Player application, however, will support high-quality upscaling of DVD and Blu-ray Disc content. Q: What 4K entertainment options will PS4 Pro support? 4K streaming apps for Netflix and YouTube are in development. Though 4K streaming is still in its early days, other services are likely to offer 4K video content in the future as well. Q: Will there be any 4K PlayStation Store movies or TV shows? There are no plans for this at PS4 Pro’s launch, but the PlayStation Network team is looking into it. Other QuestionsQ: How large is PS4 Pro, physically? PS4 Pro is slightly larger than the original PS4 model introduced in 2013, and will measure approximately 295×55×327 mm (width × height × length). Q: Will PS4 Pro owners have a performance advantage in online games when competing against standard PS4 players? Generally, no. Playtesting and balancing is up to each game developer, and while it’s true that PS4 Pro’s more powerful hardware can drive smoother or more stable frame rates in supported titles, developers have many tools and processes they can use to prevent imbalances. Q: Will there be any changes to Remote Play or Share Play with PS4 Pro? Yes, PS4 Pro’s increased processing power can offer significant streaming benefits if the internet bandwidth is fast enough. Remote Play users on PC, Mac, or Xperia will be able to stream gameplay from a PS4 Pro system at up to 1080p. Share Play users on a standard PS4 or PS4 Pro will also be able to stream gameplay from a PS4 Pro system at up to 1080p. With both Remote Play and Share Play, PS4 Pro’s adaptive streaming technology will attempt to optimize streaming quality to make the most of available internet bandwidth. For the best experience, we recommend a 15Mbps or higher connection and using a wired Ethernet connection (not Wi-Fi) whenever possible. Q: Will the Share button capture higher quality game content with PS4 Pro games? When playing a game with PS4 Pro features, using DUALSHOCK 4’s Share button will generate higher resolution gameplay clips and screenshots compared to the standard PS4. Specifics will vary by game, but some games will support full 1080p video capture, and screenshots at up to 3840 x 2160 (4K) pixels. Q: Will I be able to Broadcast my gameplay at higher settings? Yes. At launch, you will be able to broadcast a YouTube stream at as high as 1080p and 60 frames per second. Q: Are Sony’s new 4K TVs a good fit for PS4 Pro? While we won’t provide a specific recommendation for PS4 Pro at this time, Sony has a long history of designing TVs with advanced technology, and that reputation has extended to the 4K TV realm. Q: What size 4K TV should I get? We can’t give an official recommendation on TV size due to variables in room size, seating distance, and media types. 4K games and movies can feature up to four times the total resolution of a 1080p signal, so to take full advantage of 4K’s greatly increased fidelity, you’ll want a 4K TV that’s big enough to show it off comfortably. Unofficially, the staff of PlayStation.Blog has observed good results in average living rooms with 4K TVs sized 60’’ and up. If you’re in the market for a new 4K TV for PS4 Pro, we strongly recommend selecting a model with HDR10 compatibility, which will enable increased image vividness and contrast in HDR10-enabled games and movies. Q: If I’m using PS4 Pro on a 4K TV, and I’m playing a PS4 game without PS4 Pro features. Will it still output in 4K? Yes, older PS4 games without dedicated PS4 Pro features will output at 4K when played on PS4 Pro and a supported 4K TV using a Premium HDMI cable. You will not, however, see any visual benefits without support for PS4 Pro features. View the full article
  18. I don’t know about you, but we here at inXile like our RPGs a bit strange. We want to solve bizarre mysteries, argue with memorable lunatics, and get killed by dangerous artifacts when we press the wrong button. That’s why we’ve been having so much fun making Torment: Tides of Numenera — the entire world is a soaring swan dive into a bottomless lake of delightful weirdness and we’re immensely excited that the game will be coming to PS4. Torment is set a billion years in the future in a place called the Ninth World. That name isn’t just for show: the people in this world built their cities over the bones and ruins of eight ancient fallen civilizations before them. And the technology of those previous civilizations is lying everywhere, waiting to be discovered and exploited. Torment: Tides of Numenera is the spiritual successor to the classic PC RPG Planescape: Torment. Based on Monte Cook’s Numenera tabletop game and developed by members of the original Planescape team, Torment: Tides of Numenera tells the story of the near-immortal Changing God, an unstoppable creature called the Sorrow, and… you. You are the Last Castoff, the last child of the Changing God, and you’re born falling from space. Things don’t get easier for you from there. You’re being hunted for reasons you barely understand, and searching for your place in this world. You’ll talk to ancient machine intelligences and friendly cannibal cultists. You’ll play with impossible, incomprehensible artifacts, and you’ll die. A lot. But that’s okay, because death is rarely permanent in Torment: Tides of Numenera, and failure is sometimes more interesting than success. More often than not, screwing up doesn’t mean a reload because it reveals new paths that you wouldn’t have found otherwise. We set out to make a game you’d want to replay over and over, just to see all the different ways you can change this world. Your character’s decisions will be fed into our morality system, which is deeper and subtler than “good†or “evil,†and reacts to the kind of person you’re roleplaying. You might become known as a scholar, a brute, a philanthropist, or a passionate justice-seeker, just to name a few. Each choice you make shapes your legacy and the Ninth World itself. So, if you like intense, reactive, story-driven RPGs full of gloriously weird things that can kill you, check out Torment: Tides of Numenera. View the full article
  19. More than three and a half years ago, I stood on stage in New York to unveil PlayStation 4, which captured our vision for the future of gaming. That vision placed the gamer at the center of the PlayStation ecosystem and empowered developers to create transformative experiences. This afternoon I returned to New York for another PlayStation Meeting to discuss the evolution of the PlayStation 4 platform and introduce PS4 Pro. This new high-end PS4 will sit alongside the new slimmer, lighter PS4, which we officially unveiled today. The new standard PS4 is starting to ship to retailers now and will be available by September 15 for a suggested retail price of $299.99 USD ($379.99 CAD), representing great value for gamers who haven’t joined the PS4 community just yet. Our engineering and design teams collaborated to consolidate PS4’s high-performance technology into a smaller, more energy efficient form factor. When comparing the new PS4 model to the current model, we’ve reduced volume by 30 percent, weight by 16 percent, and power consumption by 28 percent. Despite the sleek design, the new model packs all of the same powerful components that have made PS4 the best place to play. With PlayStation 4 Pro our goal is to deliver innovation in the form of cutting-edge visuals and graphics while in the midst of the PS4’s lifecycle. PS4 Pro, which launches November 10, 2016, for a suggested retail price of $399.99 USD ($499.99 CAD), enhances PS4 games by supporting the latest in imaging technology through 4K resolution and High Dynamic Range (HDR), as well as smoother frame rates. Games that already look extraordinary on PS4 will look richer and more detailed, thanks to the more powerful GPU and faster CPU at the heart of PS4 Pro. With more pixels, 4K’s higher resolution delivers graphics that are sharper and have greater detail than ever imagined. HDR enables visuals to look much closer to the way your eyes see the real world. Some developers are updating previously launched PS4 games to add PS4 Pro support, while other developers are building PS4 Pro support into upcoming releases. At launch, you’ll be able to download patches for games – such as Uncharted 4 – which are enhanced when playing on the new console. Future releases that will have PS4 Pro enhancements built-in include Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Mass Effect: Andromeda and Days Gone. However, even if you own an HDTV that does not support either 4K or HDR, PS4 Pro still provides a number of benefits. All games will run in 1080p resolution, and some will even run in a higher or more stable framerate. If you’re a gamer that wants to be at the forefront of innovation, PS4 Pro is for you. We also know a lot of our fans watch movies, TV shows, and videos on their PS4, so we’re working with our partners who offer best-in-class streaming services to build new apps for PS4 Pro. Netflix will launch a new app at the launch of PS4 Pro that supports 4K. YouTube is also developing a new 4K-compatible app for PS4 Pro. But it’s important to note that the choice is yours. Whether you’re playing on PS4 Pro, the new slimmer and lighter PS4, or the PS4 system you bought at launch in 2013, you’ll have access to the same amazing games with the same features and same vibrant community that make PlayStation the best place to play. There won’t be any gameplay features exclusive to PS4 Pro or the standard PS4. In fact, we believe the impact of HDR on gaming and entertainment is so promising that all PlayStation 4 systems – back to the very first console sold in 2013 – are now HDR capable. It is incredibly important for us, and our developer partners, to maintain one PS4 audience. All PS4 systems are also ready to deliver on the promise of virtual reality with the upcoming launch of PlayStation VR. Whichever system you choose, we’ll continue to give you the exclusive franchises, blockbuster third-party titles, and unique games from creative developers that you’ve come to expect from PlayStation. I want to take a moment to thank everyone in the PlayStation Nation for the incredibly passionate support around PS4. From day one with PS4, we’ve been driven to create a system tuned to the needs of gamers. PS4 Pro builds on that goal even further, and we can’t wait for you to try it. View the full article

  22. Comrades! I’m absolutely thrilled to announce that The Tomorrow Children launches today and everyone is welcome to jump into this strange neo-Soviet alternative future we’ve created! The Tomorrow Children is a game quite unlike any other. It features elements of action, simulation, strategy, and social gaming all brought together in a unique alternate-reality, sandbox world. As a projection clone, you must work with others to restore an annihilated human civilization to its former glory by gathering resources, expanding and customizing your town, constructing defenses, and fending off the “Izverg†Kaiju monsters. With tremendous support from our community during our open beta test, we’ve been able to make a number of improvements to the game in recent months, some of which I have outlined below. Thanks again to everyone who took part and helped us hone the game — there will be more adjustments and new features added in the coming weeks. New Features1.) Town Restoration By reviving Matryoshka dolls and reaching the target population, your town can be “restored†(To glory, comrades!). Those making the most contributions to the restoration will be awarded special points which, in turn, can be exchanged for building permits, new void powers, and a bunch of other cool stuff! When a town is restored it will be frozen for posterity so that you can move on to a new one. You can always revisit your previous towns and later in the year and we are planning some fun stuff for these “completed†towns. 2.) Comrade Summons As reward for your labor you’ll earn official coupons which can, in turn, be exchanged at the residents’ store for a Comrade Summons. With this you can invite up to five other players to The Tomorrow Children for free. All you need to do is copy the voucher code displayed on the Comrade Summons and send it to your friends via any means. Voucher codes redeemed will give the player an entitlement to play the free version of The Tomorrow Children as the proletariat (this will be included in an update to be released in September). 3.) Toil Chips Toil Chips can be found on the ground at random and will allow you to earn extra “toil†if you collect them. Also, the Freeman dollar drops that were missing in the latest beta have also been restored. 4.) Tree Variations It’s now possible for a variety of tree types to co-exist in the same town — as opposed to one. Plant saplings can even be brought from other towns to mix things up a little bit! 5.) Terrain Colors Terrain created by Void powers, the Eagle Corp Jackrammer, and the Comrade’s Jackrammer will now have a unique color associated to the town. 6.) Further Improvements Snubbed players (who have been turned blue) will now be caught and thrown in a gulag by constables as they wander around town. The parameters for snubbing have been adjusted to avoid griefing. Players are automatically snubbed when they attack a facility. Facility strength has been adjusted so that they are more difficult to destroy. The town hall can no longer be disassembled and will consume less resources when destroyed. When facility signboards are thrown into the recycling bin, it will now return a partial amount of the resources that were used when the facility was built. Players who throw resources into recycling bins will now be automatically snubbed. Only one “Ministry of Labor†can exist in a town. Use of “Disassembler†is now limited to players with a residence built in the town. The frequency of Izverg attacks now dynamically adjusts according to the active player numbers present in town, making it a little less tough to defend if there are only a handful of you manning the guns. The pattern of Izverg attacks will differ between towns meaning some towns will be a lot harder than others (and other towns will be a little easier). When the Forged Fruit voucher is used on top of the storage it will drop the food directly into the deposit. The act of loading a resource at the bus stop will now be rewarded with toil. The “Ministry of Labor†will only award toil for actions made within the town you are in, so when you decide to visit a new town remember to collect your coupons first (you can always come back later, too). Lots of balancing adjustments. As you can see from this list, we have been very busy and are now incredibly excited to have everyone join in and play The Tomorrow Children. And, of course, glory to all! View the full article
  23. What happens when you mix ballet, MMA, magical girls, and bullet hell? Touhou Genso Rondo: Bullet Ballet, dood! This PS4 exclusive mash-up between a shmup and a fighting game will be hitting PlayStation Store and retail in North America tomorrow! In the two weeks after launch, we’ll be giving everyone a one-two punch of extra fun by adding two new playable characters: Flandre Scarlet & Yukari Yakumo in free patches! Okay, so that’s a lot of news about a game that’s been flying a bit under the radar, so lemme give you a quick primer! Touhou Genso Rondo is basically a mashup of your typical 1-on-1 fighting game with the signature bullet-hell excitement of the Touhou Project. You’ll find all the standard modes you’re used to in fighting games, including Story, Arcade, and Boss Rush, along with local and online versus modes. Each fight will see you dancing between a beautiful-yet-deadly array of projectiles as you answer in kind in an effort to be the last one left standing when the air clears. A picture is worth a thousand words though, so check out our trailer for a thousand-thousand words worth of info! So yeah, that’s what the game looks like. Dazzling and dizzying, am I right? You’ll be duking it out against your friends or the CPU with some of the coolest characters of the Touhou Project – a massive universe that encompasses more than a hundred characters, each with a unique and interesting backstory and personal music. The original world of Touhou was created by ZUN, a one-man dev team who has handled the game design, scenario writing, programming, character design, and music production for over 15 entries into the universe. Though he originally created Touhou back in 1996 as a way to create his own game music, the series has become a bit of a phenomenon thanks to the Play Doujin! scene that has grown around it and fostered a plethora of fan-developed games like Touhou Genso Rondo. Because Touhou Genso Rondo was created by CUBETYPE, a relatively small team of Japanese developers, they’ve been insanely excited that we’re bringing it to the West. Being the savvy publisher that we are, we harnessed that excitement and had CUBETYPE add three brand-new characters for this release! (Okay, let’s be honest, they offered to add characters.) When you pick up Touhou Genso Rondo: Bullet Ballet, you’ll be snagging everything Japan got, plus Aya Shameimaru at release. On September 20, you’ll get a free update that will add the winner of our fan poll contest, Flandre Scarlet, and two weeks later, on October 4, you’ll get Yukari Yakumo added to your game! Once they’ve been added to the game, you’ll get to use Aya, Flandre, and Yukari in Arcade, Boss Rush, and all the versus modes. Each of the three new characters will also get a unique DLC available on PSN for $1.99 that will include both their Story and BGM. Alrighty then! So much goodness in one article, I’m sure you’re salivating in anticipation! If so, you can check out the full roster on the official game site to settle on which character you’ll main when the game comes out tomorrow. Already got a favorite? Let me know in the comments! Until next time, dood! View the full article

  25. Much has been said about Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare‘s space-faring single-player campaign, but we haven’t gotten a good look at its multiplayer mode — arguably the bread and butter of any FPS worth its salt — until now. Infinity Ward is taking a bold step further into the future than any Call of Duty developer before them this November. But despite its high-tech trappings, Infinite Warfare will feel instantly familiar to longtime veterans and more recent COD fans. Sid and I played a few rounds of Infinite Warfare multiplayer and came away impressed by its ability to balance old and new. Here are a few details that stuck with us: Overall, the map design seemed to bring a unique look and play style compared to Black Ops 3. Frontier was set in the sprawling, narrow corridors of a space station, leading to lots of close-quarters encounters and surprise attacks. While gravity wasn’t effected during play, defeated enemies would drift lazily toward the ceiling. We played standard TDM and Domination, but also an addictive mode called Defender, in which teams compete to maintain control of a ball that periodically resets to its original spawn position. While carrying the ball, players are unable to use their weapons, but they can always pass to a nearby teammate — or dole out a hearty *thwack* over enemies’ heads if things get desperate. Infinite Warfare’s multiplayer retains the movement system made famous by Black Ops 3, including slides, wallrunning, and mid-air boosting. I noticed that grenades seemed to have a slightly longer windup time, and felt a bit heavier compared to Black Ops 3. We played with six Combat Rigs, selectable characters similar to Black Ops 3’s Specialists. Each comes with a complement of Perks and a special weapon that charges as the match goes on. Stryker can equip a Gravity Vortex Gun that fires black holes; combat droid Synaptic can summon integrated dual machineguns; Merc can deploy the Steel Dragon, a multi-target beam weapon. My favorite? The Eraser, a limited-use, unreasonably powerful pistol that instantly vaporized anyone unfortunate enough to be in my way. Create a Class presented us with a large number of classes, from the standard Rifleman to the heavy Rapid Response and shotgun-focused Point Blank. Sid favored a speedy class called the Duelist, equipped only with dual pistols. The expansive Scorestreak selection included everything from traditional UAVs, to bombardments from nearby weapons satellites, to summoning an R-C8 mech which looked like a cross between a terminator endoskeleton and a walking tank.Speaking of weapons, IW Multiplayer is bristling with high-tech firepower, everything from retrofitted ballistic carbines and dual-magazine SMGs to energy rifles, slug throwers, “sonic shotguns,†sci-fi grenade launchers, and beam weapons. And that’s a conservative description of the arsenal — it’s huge and varied. The Type 2 caught my attention due to an interesting quirk. It’s an SMG that you can split into two separate weapons for close-range encounters by holding Triangle. The weapon descriptions include cool little details that make the universe feel more lived-in. For example, the Hailstorm revolver fires devastating triple-shot blasts thanks to the stacked rounds in its cylinder. We didn’t get a lot of time to play with all the various gear and equipment, but we saw Cryo mines that can slow down enemies, a Dome Shield for resisting attacks, and a wide array of other grenade types. One sight attachment granted me thermal vision while aiming, but limited my awareness of the environment around me. A boon for long-range encounters, but likely not as useful in close quarters. The maps showed off creative themes, such as Frost, a gorgeous map set on wintry moon Europa and featuring a stellar view of Jupiter looming overhead. Throwback seemed to be a recreation of a vintage American town.We also got the news that the Infinite Warfare beta will debut on PS4 in October. That’s it for now — if you have questions, leave them in the comments below!
