As announced yesterday, PSN will be in maintenance for the 2nd half of the day (Pacific time). The good thing is, everything should be tip-top for Super Tuesday. No, not talking about the Republican primaries, but the release date for Mass Effect 3, four big PS Vita games, and, if you're a Plus subscriber, Journey. Today's probably a good day to work on those single-player campaigns; I expect to see a lot of Trophies hitting Facebook when everyone syncs back up. The PS.Blog weekly reading list (Week of February 13, 2012)

Journey Review - PlayStation 3 Review at IGN

Talking Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time with Sanzaru Games - Destructoid

Sumioni: Demon Arts Is Only $20 In North America - Siliconera
More...

Just typing the date "March 6th" gives me goosebumps! This Tuesday marks the release of Mass Effect 3, the long-anticipated finale to BioWare's RPG space opera that's coming to Blu-ray and PSN. As a series devotee, I'm dying to see how my storyline plays out, especially how it will build upon the (often poor) decisions I made in Mass Effect 2. If you want to hear more early impressions for Mass Effect 3, listen to our discussion on the new episode of PlayStation Blogcast. In other news this week, Namco Bandai Games confirmed a March 13th US release date and free DLC for Ridge Racer on PS Vita, Q-Games announced a Spring release date for PixelJunk 4am (and a San Francisco community play session this Tuesday)... As you may recall, we had postponed our scheduled PlayStation Network maintenance session from last Thursday to a time to be announced. It is now determined that maintenance will take place tomorrow (Sunday, March 4). This significant PSN maintenance period is expected to start at just after noon Pacific and will last for several hours, until approximately 2am Pacific on Monday, March 5. Unlike typical maintenance events, consumers who are already signed-in to PSN will be signed-out, and consumers will be unable to sign in for the duration of the maintenance window. During this time, users won’t be able to access the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home, Account Management or play online. PSN enabled websites will not be able to service users, including this one. My fellow Ridge Racing elite, how are you? Those of you that have been following along on the PlayStation Blog know that we at NAMCO BANDAI Games have been very active here with updates on our titles for the PlayStation Vita, including Touch My Katamari and Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen. But, as many of you have been asking me, what’s up with RIDGE RACER? It’s out in Japan, and my friends in Europe are already racing… but when are we finally going to get behind the wheel, and when exactly in the ‘Launch Window’ are we going to hit the road with Reiko again? WHAT’S THE DEAL!? We know, we know. Launch days and RIDGE RACER usually are one and the same, and while our friends abroad are already racing, the teams have been taking every ounce of feedback into consideration for a full-throttle launch in North America. Thankfully, today we can confirm that the game will officially become available in on March 13th for $29.99 at retail and $24.99 for digital download from the PlayStation Store. Alright MLB The Show fans, it is time to get off the couch. This year with MLB 12 The Show, you now can play the entire game (Pitching, Batting, Fielding, and Base running) using the PS Move motion controller. When we designed the controls, the overall goal was to make it as intuitive and natural as possible. Once you play it and become familiar with the controls, you will start to feel a natural connection between playing our game and playing baseball as if you were out on a diamond.
On the Hill
When we designed the pitching controls, the idea was to promote going through the actual motion of throwing a pitch. In order to do that, we decided to tie the velocity of the pitch to how far you reach back (away from the PS Eye) to set your “potential power†and how fast you swing your arm through to determine your “actual powerâ€. This way, if you try to pitch by just flicking your wrist, sure you can get the Move to recognize that speed, but since you do not pull back during the wind-up, you will not be able to use 100% of your potential power. The difference could be a 93MPH vs a 98MPH fastball. Your accuracy is tied to the on-screen pitcher’s release point. The closer you release the trigger on the Move to that release point, the more accurate the location of the pitch will be. The result is a system that feels very natural and recognizes how much effort you are putting into each pitch and recognizes a very natural release point. There is a definite feeling of satisfaction in “painting the black†that you didn’t feel before. More...

PlayStation Network Trophies have been around since 2008, engendering legions of “Trophy Hunters†(I’ve heard a other names as well). The most elusive prey for these digital treasure seekers is the Platinum Trophy. For the uninitiated, most “full size†retail games reward players who completely unlock a long list of in-game accomplishments with a Platinum Trophy attached to your PSN ID. At a glance, it’s the quickest way to suss out a fellow gamer’s skill - while anyone can rack up the bronze Trophies, most Platinums require a mix of skill and dedication. Out of the 2000+ trophies I’ve earned, only 3 are Platinum. It’s still more than Sid. A few weeks ago, PlayStation Blogcast listener John M. asked us: Are you able to tell us the top 5 or 10 games that have been “platinum’d†or competed 100%? Just days after the official release of Escape Plan on February 22, 2012, the Fun Bits crew was invited to Lake Placid, NY to watch the 2012 FIBT World Championship (for Bobsled & Skeleton). As avid fans of the high-speed event, it was awesome to be there and witness USA-1 barreling into the finish to win Gold…with a big fat Escape Plan sticker on Steven Holcomb’s helmet. Steven Holcomb (2010 Olympic Champion and 5-time FIBT World Champion) is a total video game junkie and it was brilliant to see his massively prominent support for our “Lil†game. After receiving his Vita last week, he told us: “Escape Plan is awesome. It’s all about trial and error and I can definitely relate to that, as crashing at 85mph is sometimes as unforgiving as the mishaps of Lil & Laarg in this game.†More...

Look, I’m just going to come out and say it: this summer, ATLUS is bringing Persona 4 Arena to a PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system near you (and if it’s near you we’re going to go ahead and assume you own it). One of the most successful, highest-rated RPG franchises of the last few years is our very own Persona series. The two most recent games, Persona 3 and Persona 4, were hailed for their memorable casts of characters, plots that defied many established clichés, and mechanics and visual designs that stood apart from their competitors. Hello again, everybody! Thank you so much for your enthusiasm after we announced the release date for Journey as March 13. It’s really the juice that has kept us going over these last three years. We're anxiously awaiting the time when we'll be able to see you all online and hear what you think of Journey. So we are bundles of nerves and energy right now! The first reviews of the game are starting to hit, and we’re extremely excited that reviewers seem to understand what we set out to achieve. To help distract us from the pre-launch jitters, we recently had a small wrap party, in the same we did for flOw and Flower – by hosting a house party at the home of our former USC game design professor, and now friend, Tracy Fullerton. We like this kind of celebration because it’s just a friendly gathering for friends, family, and of course, Journey. More...

February has been a month flush with new information about The Last of Us trickling out from a variety of websites, magazines and more that have visited the Naughty Dog studio over the past three months. One of the more in-depth looks at The Last of Us came from the US publication Game Informer, who put together a cover story hub for all the OTHER information they managed to squeeze out of us from a very, very short visit. The most important part of their visit, to me, was that we were able to show a well-polished, nearly fifteen minute game demo of The Last of Us. The gameplay demo starts with Joel and Ellie driving down a highway congested with abandoned vehicles, eventually encountering another survivor who looks hurt and is limping towards their pickup truck. Surprisingly, Joel hits the accelerator and just before he barrels into the survivor, he pulls out a gun and shoots at Joel – missing Joel and only breaking the windshield. With this immediate threat behind them, Joel doesn’t have time to react as another survivor in the group rolls a bus downhill towards Joel and Ellie, broad siding them and sending the truck careening into a long-abandoned convenience store. With only days left before MLB 12 The Show hits store shelves, we know many of you plan to not only pick up the PS3 version but are anxious to pick up the all-new PS Vita version as well. One of the most important goals for us each year is to listen to our consumers and try our best to address their concerns. Over the past several weeks, we’ve heard you loud and clear – consumers who purchase both should be rewarded with a discount - and we agree. Starting on March 6th, we’ll be offering a $20 instant discount, for anyone who purchases both MLB 12 The Show on PS3 and on PS Vita, together during the same transaction at checkout. This week we welcome esteemed fighting game guru Seth Killian to the show. Capcom's Special Combat Advisor digs deep into Street Fighter x Tekken, including exclusive characters for PS3 and PS Vita, how characters are picked for the game, the very origins of Street Fighter, and how he made the transition from Illini Philosophy professor to International Street Fighter Ambassador. That actually happened. We also share first impressions of Journey and Mass Effect 3, as well as the most-Platinum-ed games in the history of PSN. And of course, we reveal what's coming to the PlayStation Store next week. Earlier this week, Rey and I visited Foster City-based Sanzaru Games, the developers of this fall’s Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. As the first original PS3 entry in the classic PS2 thieving series, and the first to be developed outside of Sucker Punch Studios, Thieves in Time represents a long-awaited return to form as well as a natural entry point for series newcomers. Where Sly 2 and Sly 3 let you slip into the roles of Sly’s partners in crime, Thieves in Time expands upon that concept by granting you control of Sly’s infamous ancestors -- the Cooper Clan members named in the hallowed pages of the Thievius Racoonus. In one chapter set in ancient Japan, I played as Riochi, Sly’s sushi-slinging ninja ancestor. Slinking past sleeping guards while searching for a special set of sushi knives, I used Riochi’s Leaping Dragon ability to soar through laser fences and other high-tech traps designed to derail the Cooper Clan’s devious destiny. SOF Studios announced today they are currently developing “an Entertainment Industry first†*by using hand selected personnel from the world’s most elite Special Operations units. On their new webpage, SOFs shares that the characters in their untitled Tactical Shooter will be profiled from actual Army Special Operations, Army Ranger, Army Special Force and Nave SEAL veterans. We understand that more *about each member’s profile will be revealed in stages and there are hints of character visuals to be added as well. Unlike the normal process that developers follow, SOFs is planning on offering an extremely high level of transparency as the project progresses. The first step in this process is by encouraging shooter fans to head to their website and “Jump In†by filling out a profile*questionnaire. This gives Gamers a personalized voice directly with the team at SOF Studios. To help reach out to Shooter Fans, SOFs has built alliances with Long Standing Communities like The Sea Snipers, TheRealSocom.com and Urgent Fury as well as the up and coming Happy Thumbs Gaming YouTube Channel. It is alliances like this that will make this game very likely to be a*truly*Fan-Driven game. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...

The best way to describe Binary Domain would be to say it is a third person Tactical Shooter that meets iRobot. Now keep in mind I had not really even heard about this game until I found out there was going to be a BradyGames*strategy e-guide for this title. I had the pleasure to play through Binary Domain start to finish and was pleasantly impressed by the game mechanics. The story line sends the main characters Dan Marshall and Roy Boateng on a mission for the IRTA to investigate the Amada corporation on breaking international laws by developing human-like robots. Your first mission is to meet up with your international counter parts while trying to keep a low profile, but nothing is that simple. Right away you are recognized as a threat by the enemy robot force as you have been dropped in Japan which is already in conflict between humans and robot forces. Throughout the campaign you pitted against varying opponents from basic assault shooters, Grand Lancers, Jarheads and more. There are over 30 different types of enemies to put our skills against. With over 25 weapons in the game, your standard issue SOWSAR-17 ASSAULT RIFLE SBMOD Assault Rifle is more than adequate against most of the enemies in the game you can pick up enemy weapons and even visit shop terminals to purchase weapons, ammo, health, upgrades and skill upgrades. These ATM like devices are scattered throughout the and actually stop all gameplay while you are accessing the terminals. Along the way you will find intel items called SECUR-COMs which are glowing data tablets that when obtained unlock one or more IRTA Reports. If you head over to the BradyGames YouTube channel we have teamed up with them to create a five part series walking you through picking up all 40 SECUR-COMs. Check out the first video in the series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iRun0nMT9c&hd=1 For all of you trophy hunters out there, Binary Domain rewards you with 50 different achievements scattered among the campaign and multiplayer. The game graphics and sound are amazing as I played on my Samsung LED television with surround sound. There are plenty of cinematic cut scenes throughout the campaign, but is well balanced with the amount of game play. The campaign is well laid out and keeps you on the edge of your seat as you race to find Yoji Amada, the founder of the mada*Corporation.

Concept

Graphics

Sound

Playability

Entertainment

Replay

Overall I give this game a 8.83 out of 10 and we are going to label Binary Domain as a sleeping giant in the shooter category for 2012. Hello everybody! We’ve been hard at work since we first unveiled Papo & Yo last summer, and the game has come a long way in the past few months.
