It's another lazy spring Saturday, and once again I'm battling hay fever -- as well as a few rampaging supervillians, now that I've found some time to catch up with Batman: Arkham City. This week saw a smattering of interesting developments: I spoke with NIS America about three upcoming PS3 exclusive RPGs, MLB 12 The Show served up a fresh set of fantasy predictions, Assassin's Creed III's creative director answered our questions (and guest starred on PlayStation Blogcast!), MLB.TV gave an opening-day update, BioShock Infinite unleashed the Siren, and the team behind Wheels of Destruction showed off a new multiplayer class and the game's weapon loadout. In other news, PAX East kicks into gear late next week! And while Jeff, Rey and I won't be on-site this year, we will be keeping close tabs on any pertinent new game details that may slip out of the community-focused event. More...

Last night was a big moment for NIS, the developer of fan-favorite tactical RPGs such as Disgaea and Phantom Brave. The publisher’s US arm, NIS America, announced three new PS3-exclusive games set to roll out over the next calendar year: dungeon crawler Legasista, strategy-RPG Mugen Souls, and action-RPG The Witch and the Hundred Knights. We sat down with NIS America Producer Jack Niida to learn more about each of the new titles. Enjoy, and leave your thoughts in the comments. Legasista for PS3 (PSN) This post-apocalyptic 2D-styled dungeon crawler -- NIS America is describing it as a “survival action-RPG†-- takes place in a far-flung future where science has been forgotten and technology is treated with superstitious awe. Ubisoft raised more than a few eyebrows when it revealed its bold plans for Assassin’s Creed III earlier this month. In a sharp break from the Renaissance theme that has dominated the last three games, ACIII will shift its focus to the desperate, bloody days of the American Revolution in a story that spans 30 years. The change is scenery is matched by a change in character, with protagonist Connor Kenway taking center stage as an assassin caught between the escalating atrocities of the Patriots and the Redcoats. It’s a juicy premise positively bursting with potential. With Assassin’s Creed III set to land on PS3 this October 30th, we sat down with Creative Director Alex Hutchinson to discuss the game’s ambitious premise and many, many gameplay enhancements. Read on for the choice highlights, or tune in to the entire 15-minute interview on episode 018 of PlayStation Blogcast. Sports fans - It's that time of year again - the winter frost has thawed and your favorite team is ready to get rolling. With MLB opening day just a week out, it's time for you to put together your fantasy squad. For those of you looking for advice on which players to target in your fantasy baseball drafts, we simulated the 2012 season using MLB 12 The Show to offer a bit of guidance. In the AL, there are plenty of guys you can build a team around - Adrian Gonzalez, Evan Longoria, Jose Bautista, Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera, and Prince Fielder all come to mind, just to name a few sluggers. For strong pitching, the NL East is a great place to start as the Braves and Phillies will have deep rotations yet again, while the Nationals may be ready to move up to the big time with the one-two punch of Stephen Strasburg and the newly acquired Gio Gonzalez. The NL has their fair share of hitters, too, with Joey Votto, Matt Kemp, and Justin Upton, while Carlos Beltran could be a sleeper in St. Louis, an organization with a track record of rejuvenating player’s careers. The weapon system in Wheels of Destruction is beautifully familiar yet dynamic and designed to keep the game balanced. Players who know class-based shooters like Unreal Tournament and Team Fortress 2 will instantly feel at home. The game has four weapon types, each with primary and alternate fire conveniently selectable on the d-pad. This simple and intuitive system actually provides 11 unique ways to decimate opponents. The Gatling gun is the initial weapon that everyone has from the start of a match. Available to the player throughout, it never runs out of ammo but is relatively weak and imprecise. However, its alternate fire is tremendously powerful - it’s a very short-ranged spread shot shotgun with massive force. Players with great skill and a bit of luck can land an instant kill shot but, most of the time, you’re better off hunting for new weapons. More...

Yes that's right; the Doc Clock universe will soon be available to everyone from PlayStation Store. This is your opportunity to join Doc Clock and his super sarcastic robot companion, SACK, on their first time-travelling adventure. Save Doc Clock’s pet cat Franklin from spending the rest of his life as a potted Cactus. Build incredible inventions, contort the flow of time and navigate a future controlled by armies of laughably dangerous techno-phobic hippy robots. Now slow down a second… we’re talking about a pet cat… spending his life as a potted plant?! Yes! Well, “Catcus†is more accurate; Doc Clock’s inventions have been known to have a slightly limited safety track record. And by ‘slightly limited’ we mean nonexistent. Needless to say it was Doc Clock’s attempt to make the world’s most awesome ‘Toasted Sandwich Machine’ which resulted in Franklin mutating into a very prickly situation! More...

Money. It’s like a baby in a burning building or a snail in the middle of a busy sidewalk; pretty much everyone wants to save it. Since nobody wants to be the jerk that steps on that poor, innocent snail, we (the fine people at Atlus) are dropping prices on our PlayStation Store library of PSP system titles, not unlike the PS Vita’s undocumented ability to drop smaller articles of sub-clothing. We’re calling it… Want to own the complete PSP Persona collection, including Persona 3 Portable, which is tied for the second-best-reviewed PSP game of ALL TIME, according to Gamerankings.com? It is now far more affordable to do so. Also getting a drop in price is the very recent Persona 2: Innocent Sin, a stunning handheld remake of one our company’s most highly anticipated games! And now, here we are, standing in the on-deck circle of the 2012 season waiting to see who will step up and lead their teams into the playoffs and become this year’s World Series hero. And, just in time for the opening series games between the Athletics and Mariners in Tokyo, all the Major League Baseball action can once again be watched with the new 2012 MLB.TV application for the PS3, now available on PSN. Just like last season, the MLB.TV app gives you access to high-quality HD, live and archived games, home and away broadcasts, as well as an array of interactive features designed to take advantage of the PS3 system’s technical prowess. If you’re a MLB.TV Premium subscriber, you can access all available Spring Training games. More...

In this edition of Pulse presented by PlayStation Network, host Christina Lee shines the spotlight on Closure - another very cool indie game coming to PSN later today. Check out this hand-drawn mysterious world that uses light as the primary game mechanic. Closure is this week's featured Spring Fever title in the PlayStation Store (and for more about the game, check out Sid Shuman's GDC interview here). Upcoming 2D fighting game Skullgirls also features impressive hand-drawn art. With eight female characters and three-person teams, this dark deco fighter shows off some impressive moves -- of course, Pulse is there for the full story. More...

I have never played an MMO and yet I’m going to be doing a lot of talking about DUST 514, a major collaboration between CCP Games and PlayStation to bring the first free-to-play console MMOFPS exclusively to PS3. Therefore, I took a trip to Iceland to attend the EVE Online Fanfest and start to get to know this fervent online community that PlayStation fans will soon be joining in New Eden and, of course, get the latest news on DUST 514. Here are some of my learnings, although I’m sure there is one pressing question on your minds before we get into that – when can you play the game? Well, the closed beta is currently underway and Fanfest attendees were told that they would be able to access a more open beta in April, which will open in waves throughout the following months. Rest assured, we’ll be keeping you up to date with opportunities to join in here on PlayStation.Blog. More...

Lately I’ve been spending a great deal of time outside the studio and, I must say, the positive reception the game is receiving from those that get their hands on the game has been outstanding. From in-store demo stations to my local “corner coffee station†to my kid’s little league team each and every comment is similar to “I’ve got to get this!†But hey, don’t just take my word for it. Below is a random screenshot* from my personal Vita’s "near" feature showing what I and many others have experienced: players are loving this game! After only a few minutes of hands–on time with ModNation Racers: Road Trip they realize just how much long-lasting fun this title has to offer. About a month ago, I was invited to Reykjavik, Iceland for Eve Fanfest 2012. Just four days into the start of spring and my allergies are already in full bloom! With my nose dripping like a leaky faucet and my throat feeling like extra-coarse sandpaper, I plan to keep a low profile this weekend and catch up on my backlog. Gaming news was light this week, headlined by first official news of LittleBigPlanet Karting and other top stories you can find below.
