1. If you’ve ever dreamed of a career in video game development, you’ve got to listen to this week’s episode of PlayStation Blogcast! Our special guest host is SCEA Senior Producer Kyle Shubel, who has worked on litany of high-profile PlayStation titles, including Killzone 3, Heavenly Sword, and LittleBigPlanet. In today’s episode, Kyle explains what a “game producer†actually does, walks us through his day-to-day role on the PS Vita action-RPG Warrior’s Lair, and shares his tips for breaking into game design. Good stuff! Afterwards, Kyle sticks around for another monster segment as we discuss some of our most-anticipated games of 2012, from Starhawk to Sorcery to Hitman: Absolution to PS Vita’s launch lineup and more. Be sure to leave your top picks for 2012 in the comments below! You’ll also hear a new batch of user questions, a new PSN Gem of the Week, and of course, the first details on next week’s PSN software lineup. So listen up! More...
2. Ni Hao PlayStation Playas, this is John Diamonon, the Brand Manager for Resident Evil in North America, and it’s been a while my friends. Last time I was here, I announced MvC3 and you were all like, “Yeah!†This time, I have news that’s gonna make you say, “EFF yeah!†It’s my pleasure to announce that the next installment of the canonical Resident Evil series, Resident Evil 6, returns on November 20, 2012. That gives you a whole month to enjoy the game (enjoy life really) before the end of the Mayan calendar when the real zombie apocalypse happens. We figure you might need some practice killing the infected to prepare yourself. Oops. Did I say zombies? Resident Evil 6 has zombies? More...
3. Back in November we announced Adrian Gonzalez as our cover athlete for MLB 12 The Show, and today we are excited to reveal that cover image. When sports fans look for MLB 12 The Show on store shelves beginning March 6th, they’ll see the Red Sox All-Star first baseman gracing a cover that has a new, sleek look and one that makes a bold statement – "Highest Rated Sports Game 4 Years in a Row." Here's a glimpse... The Show has been and continues to be the market leading and most realistic baseball title of this console generation and the number-one rated sports video game over the past four years, so we're psyched to have one the best all-around players in baseball representing MLB 12. The first overall pick by the Florida Marlins in the 2000 MLB Draft, Gonzalez has ascended to the top of his sport, both on the field and at the plate. He is a four-time All-Star (2008-2011), three-time Rawlings Gold Glove winner (2008, 2009, 2011), and 2011 Silver Slugger Award winner. More...
4. Learning how to bring characters to life with all the nuances of personality, habits, quirks and mannerisms was really Sony Bend’s first and most important job when we started to work on Uncharted: Golden Abyss. We have an awesome example in the Uncharted series, and we wanted to give the characters a level of depth that transcends the screen. These videos shows just a glimpse of our process and how we worked with our eclectic cast of characters. I’m no stranger to writing, having written all the Syphon Filter games, but this title taught me some new tricks. By the time we started shooting in February 2011, I had gone through over 40 revisions, changing everything from setting, characters, names, dialogue and action. If we count all the in-game VO dialogue, we ended up with over 400 pages of script for Uncharted: Golden Abyss. More...
5. Hello PSN players! I hope that the season has been kind to you. While we’re still in the tail-end of the Winter of RPGs, I’m here to share something completely different with you! I’d like to introduce you to the newest female hero to join the Square Enix family. She’s an unlikely heroine, but she’s proven herself in her most recent adventure. I’m talking, of course, about Scarygirl. But who is Scarygirl? That’s a question she herself has been striving to answer. She washed ashore on an island, and was taken in by a friendly octopus named Blister. Scarygirl knew that she was different—after all, she has one arm that’s a tentacle, one arm that’s a bone, and a really cool eyepatch. Her problems started when she began having nightmares about a mysterious man. When Blister was unable to help her, he sent Scarygirl to the wise—if cryptic—Bunniguru. And, after speaking to him, she set out on a journey to discover the mystery of the man behind her nightmares. More...
6. The good news: <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/mortal-kombat/'>http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/mortal-kombat/">Mortal Kombat is coming to <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/category/ps-vita/'>http://blog.us.playstation.com/category/ps-vita/">PS Vita! The bad news: Details are so scarce that we haven’t seen so much as a single screenshot! Luckily, Netherrealm Studios Creative Director Ed Boon emerged from the shadows to share first details with PlayStation.Blog readers, including the existence of a PS Vita-exclusive second Challenge Tower and hints at how the game will take advantage of PS Vita’s unique hardware capabilities. Read up on our full Q&A below and check back soon for more details on this spring’s eagerly anticipated portable pugilist.
PlayStation.Blog: What’s the scope of Mortal Kombat for PS Vita? Does it include all the content from the PS3 game? Ed Boon, Creative Director, Netherrealm Studios: It’s actually everything from the PS3 game: the entire Story mode and all the downloadable characters and content, plus additional modes and features that are tailored for PS Vita. We really wanted to take advantage of Vita’s hardware.
7. Last December I attended the Tokyo launch of PlayStation Vita, which is going to be in your hands just about one month from now. While I was there I got to chat with Tokashi Sogabe of the Sony Corporate Design Centre, head of the team in charge of the aesthetic of the console. Sogabe-san has 27 years of experience working with Sony, in which time he has designed the Walkman, Vaio notebooks, the current slimmer model of PS3 and many other electronic devices. 9. For years there’s been somewhat of a line between the online areas of MLB The Show and the rest of the game...sometimes that line was faint, sometimes it was distinct. Coming into the development of MLB 12 The Show, we really wanted to eliminate that line so this lead to the idea of Online Everywhere. The game modes in the main menu of MLB 12 The Show now have all game modes, offline and online in the same list. As you can see from the image below, Home Run Derby is listed in game modes, once selected you’ll be able to select offline or online. You’ll also see Diamond Dynasty, which is an entirely new mode that mixes offline and online components and includes elements never before seen in a sports game (more info on both of those modes to come soon). Moving over one click to the right from the main menu, there's now a community menu with the online features available. More...
10. PlayStation’s longest running franchise has already graced PTOM’s cover once (our November 2010 issue), but we just can’t get enough of Sweet Tooth and the rest of the demented Twisted Metal gang. As the February 14th release date of PS3’s next big exclusive nears, we visit developer Eat Sleep Play and get the lowdown on the game’s multiplayer modes. We also managed to walk away with breakdowns on vehicle strengths and weaknesses courtesy of David Jaffe himself, as well as maps and strategy tips for four locations. The February issue also means its time for our 2011 Game of the Year awards! Time to throw out the review scores and reflect on the year’s greatest gaming experiences away from the pressures of impending deadlines. It’s one last opportunity for the PTOM crew to argue, debate, and pummel each other into submission and agreement. Sure, some of the choices might be predictable, but even we were surprised by some of the winners. More...
11. At last week’s International CES, I had the opportunity to meet the top man at Sony Computer Entertainment, President and CEO Andrew House. House ascended to the role, replacing Kazuo Hirai, after working for Sony in Japan, Europe, and here at SCEA over the past two decades. In this show floor discussion, I ask House about PlayStation Suite, his outlook on the Western launch of PS Vita, and what he plans to accomplish as CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment. If you’d like to hear how Andrew House got started in the industry and rose through the ranks, listen to his “origin story†on the Official PlayStation Blogcast Episode 007. 12. By valuing stealth, careful observation, and meticulous planning over the run-and-gun bulletstorms of its contemporaries, the Hitman series has earned a sizable fan base over its long and celebrated career. As coldblooded antihero Agent 47, the player quietly stalks his prey through a Kafka-esque maze of guards and security measures, donning disguises, blending in with the crowd, and evading or subduing threats in order to efficiently fulfill his latest contract kill. The key phrase here is blending in; in Hitman, to stand out is to be detected, and to be detected is to die in a hail of gunfire. This tense, analytical formula has served Hitman well over many successful sequels. But the steep learning curve and unforgiving stealth segments have also proven polarizing, preventing some newcomers from embracing what is by all accounts a uniquely rewarding stealth-action title. Taking a cue from 2011’s successful launch of Deus Ex: Human Revolution -- another stealth game that sought to broaden its appeal without betraying its roots -- Hitman: Absolution seeks to have its bloody cake and eat it, too. 16. After an extended holiday break, PULSE returns today with a look at some of the big games coming in 2012. From the gorgeous Final Fantasy XIII-2 scheduled at the end of this month, Twisted Metal on Valentine's Day through Spring releases such as the highly anticipated crossover Street Fighter X Tekken, the intriguing Journey, and the 'build and battle' of Starhawk, we hope you enjoy these reminders of the year ahead. Christina Lee also takes a look at some of the PlayStation Vita games just over the horizon and also looks back at top game downloads of 2011 with a Top 11 list of the best. 17. Happy 2012! We’re starting the year off with a fresh batch of UNCHARTED 3 DLC content and more in the pipeline that prophecies forbid us from fully portending quite yet. Hope you’ve all gotten 2012 off to a rocking start even with all the 2012 phenomenon chatter. If not, we’re about to make your end of days talk and your UNCHARTED gaming life much more awesome. First off, today we’ll be releasing four maps we teased a couple of weeks after the UNCHARTED 3 launch. You’ll be getting the Cave, Fort, Lost City, and Sanctuary maps in this download pack. Dynamic lighting effects, new particle effects and a slew of technical changes have been made to these maps. The lighting was reworked from scratch. New textures and weather effects are apparent and freshly decorate all maps. We poured hours of development time into these maps to make them be really fun in the UNCHARTED 3 multiplayer ecosystem. This map pack is a taste of how far we can go to remix some of your favorite maps into a completely new UNCHARTED 3 gameplay experience. More...

The Mod Postcards feature is found in the “Favorites†section of the Creation Station and for a good reason – you’ll be coming back to it over and over (and more than likely yet again). 1. Postcard Image The first thing you’ll be asked to do is either load an image or take a photo. “Take a photo†is fairly straightforward. Using either the Vita’s front or rear camera you’ll frame your shot using the front touch screen’s viewfinder. You’ll notice a miniature Tag and his Kart superimposed into the center of the display awaiting the click of the shutter. Simply touch the “Take Pic†icon in the top left corner to take the picture. Early tomorrow, I'll be on a jet to Chicago for one of five PlayStation Vita meet-ups to take place this week. We've never done social events in Atlanta, Chicago, or Miami, so I'm quite looking forward to meeting new PlayStation fans - even if it means I'm going to have to buy some gloves.
