  3. Hello! I hope this new decade has treated you well thus far. We kicked off 2020 with the release of big games like Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and Journey to the Savage Planet, but don’t sleep on smaller titles like Flat Heroes and Shadow Legend VR! Hit the polls below to help decide January’s best new game, and make a case for your vote in the comments. We’ll keep the polls open through Sunday night, then reveal the winners next week. How does it work? At the end of every month, PlayStation.Blog will open a poll where you can vote for the best new game released that month. Soon thereafter, we’ll close the polls, tally your votes, and announce the winner at PlayStation.Blog. PlayStation Store will also showcase some top Players’ Choice winners throughout the year. What is the voting criteria? That’s up to you! If you were only able to recommend one new release to a friend that month, which would it be? In keeping with our long tradition in the Game of the Year Awards, remastered or re-released games won’t qualify. Ambitious, larger-scale rebuilds and remakes like Shadow of the Colossus and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will. How are nominees decided? The PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation Store editorial teams will gather a list of that month’s most noteworthy releases and use it to seed the poll. Write-in votes will be accepted. 4. It gives me so much joy to announce that our Azure Striker Gunvolt series is making its long-awaited debut on PS4 this April! After the release of Azure Striker Gunvolt in 2014 and Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 in 2016, I had always hoped that one day we would be able to bring the series over to the PlayStation. This way, all of the people who love the kind of 2D side-scrolling action games we’ve been making for over 20 years can finally experience a series that is bursting at the seams with everything we love in a video game. While it’s true that the Gunvolt series features the 2D action gameplay that has become synonymous with Inti Creates over the years, it’s all of the other features that weave it all together that make the Gunvolt games our pride and joy. Anime-style Characters and World Created in High-Quality Pixel Art It’s not a part of the game I work on personally, so I don’t have to hold back when I say that I believe we have some of the best pixel artists in the entire industry working on our titles. The detailed characters, jaw-dropping backgrounds, and fluid animations that my comrades make never cease to blow my mind. Combined with series character artist Yoshiktaka Hatakeyama’s masterfully crafted character art, key art, and more, it’s no small wonder that Gunvolt and the gang became the faces of our company. OK, I’ll stop gushing about our artists now :) Classic-Style Action Game Elements Woven Into a Deep Storyline I feel like this was especially true back in the day and even when the Gunvolt games originally released, but 2D action games weren’t necessarily known for having very deep storylines. That was something we wanted to change with the Gunvolt series, and with a motley cast that includes more than 30 developed, fully-voiced characters spread over the two games, the stage was set for Gunvolt’s sci-fi narrative to unfold. There are lots of character interactions in the game, and I’m not just talking about the dialogue that happens between stages or during encounters with boss characters. A lot of dialogue happens live during stage playthroughs (called Story Mode+), which gives the characters a lot more time to interact with each other and share details about who they are that you would otherwise never have a chance to learn. Songs Performed By the Games’ Heroines Ramp up the Action The heroines of the game have a special ability known as “The Muse,” and the power of song is an integral part of their characters. When players reach a certain score, referred to in-game as “Kudos” points, the heroines Lumen and Lola will appear and the soundtrack turns into an electric, vocal-filled J-pop performance for as long as the player can maintain the necessary Kudos. With over 20 vocal tracks in total, including a new one made exclusively for the PlayStation release of the Striker Pack, I challenge you to do your best so you can hear these wonderful ladies sing their hearts out! Gameplay That’s Welcoming for New Players and Veterans We want everyone to be able to enjoy the story of the Gunvolt games, so we put systems in place that allow players of all skill levels to customize their experience to increase the challenge or give Gunvolt and Copen an extra edge against those particularly tough bosses. With the other improvements we put in place like overhauling the graphics and UI, increasing the frame rate to 60fps from its original 30fps and more, the PlayStation version is the ultimate way to experience the original Azure Striker Gunvolt games, and I hope you all have an absolute blast with them on April 23! 6. Death is coming in Apex Legends Season 4 — Assimilation. Face your fears or become them with Revenant, light up the Arena with a fresh Battle Pass, strike fear into your enemies with a new sniper, explore an updated map, and more. Become a Walking Nightmare with Revenant Revenant used to be human. He was the greatest hitman the Mercenary Syndicate ever had. He used to look in the mirror and see his human face looking back. But time changes everything, and when his programming finally failed, he saw what he had become at the hands of the Mercenary Syndicate and Hammond Robotics: a walking nightmare of steel and vestigial flesh. His masters resurrected him as a simulacrum, snatching him from death’s embrace again and again and programming him to forget. Centuries later, all he wants is revenge. Of course, he doesn’t mind eviscerating a few of the Legends along the way. He used to need a reason to kill… but he’s not that man anymore. Deal Death From a Distance With Sentinel Get your hands on the new Sentinel bolt-action sniper rifle. Fast (for a sniper), accurate, and surgical, the Sentinel lets you remove your enemies from the battlefield with cold-blooded accuracy. 7. The new decade kicks off with a trove of high-profile releases. Tracking all the gaming goodness releasing in early 2020 can be overwhelming, but we’ve got your back. The first part of the year has you covered whether you’re into surviving zombie outbreaks, fighting Hell through Heaven and Earth, or fending off vicious Infected. Below are the big games to watch for releasing through April 2020. Dreams February 14 The minds behind Little Big Planet and Tearaway expand the creative possibilities for PS4 users. Media Molecule’s new release lets players craft games and experiences big and small, of any genre. Want to create an FPS starring a peanut-blasting elephant, or an RPG from the perspective of a sentient vacuum? Dreams lets you make it happen. If playing is more your thing, Dream Surfing lets you cruise through thousands of unique user-created experiences. Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection February 25 Visit a time long after the events of the Mega Man and Mega Man X series, where the storied Zero battles evil robots (his true vocation). Capcom’s handheld side-scrolling series makes its way to PS4 for the first time ever, bundling six intense games into one package. Mega Man Zero 1 – 4 let players simultaneously wield both Zero’s deadly Z-sabre and a long-range buster for the first time in the series. The result is cathartic and empowering. ZX and ZX Advent reward players who defeat bosses with new attacks that enhance their mobility and allow access to new locations. This collection is a must for anyone who loves jumpin’, shootin’, and lootin’ boss weapons. Nioh 2 March 13 Team Ninja’s prequel invites players to test their samurai skills in an era of warfare and evil spirits. Nioh 2 expands combat options with the Yokai Shift ability, letting players embody a club-wielding brute, nimble dagger user, and more. These potent abilities are counter-balanced by tough enemies that will test players’ skills and discipline. One such enemy is the fearsome Mezuki – a large, horse-headed beats brandishing a serrated weapon with brutal efficiency. The feeling of satisfying, hard-won victories is just around the corner. MLB The Show 20 March 17 Play Video San Diego Studio returns to the mound this year for its latest in baseball goodness. MLB The Show 20 packs gameplay improvements, the thrilling Road To The Show mode, March To October 2.0, and an all new Showdown game mode. While we don’t have many specific details about the new mode or gameplay updates, San Diego Studio’s continued dedication to the diamond should be enough to keep it on fans’ radars. Doom Eternal March 20 Rip, tear, and burn. The Doom Slayer returns in id Software’s high-impact sequel brandishing new weapons and abilities. Take the fearsome Flame Belch, for instance. The new shoulder-mounted flamethrower lets players immolate enemies and reap the armor shards that drop in the process. These new tricks will come in handy when battling new demons like the aerial Gargoyle and support-class Carcass. The frenzied fight extends beyond the red terrain of Doom (2016)’s Mars to a Hell-ravaged Earth filled with shattered skyscrapers and decimated shopping malls. The action extends beyond Earth to the solar system and even the heavens above. Suit up, reload — it’s gonna be Hell. Persona 5 Royal March 31 The Phantom Thieves strike again in this expanded version of their unforgettable adventure. Joker packs a new grappling hook he can use to explore specific areas, new content has been added to palaces, and the gang can hang out the bustling Kichijoji, filled with shops and restaurants. New transfer student, Kasumi, is the star of the expanded story. The talented ballerina and gymnast lights up the dance floor and battles in the Metaverse. You can get to know Kasumi and the rest of the big additions coming with Persona 5 Royal soon. Better get some rest first! Resident Evil 3 April 3 Pack your bags — not to visit Raccoon City, but to escape it. Just a year after Capcom’s stellar Resident Evil 2 remake, the devs are giving a similar treatment to 1999’s Resident Evil 3. The terrifying bio-weapon, Nemesis, stalks Spencer Mansion survivor Jill Valentine across the chaotic city. He’s intelligent, determined, and packs brutal weapons like a rocket launcher and massive flamethrower. Early looks at the game showcase Capcom’s photorealistic character models, which bring new life to Jill and the Umbrella soldiers she tenuously allies with to scrape by. The game also comes with the online, asymmetrical action of Resident Evil Resistance (formerly known as Project Resistance). One player is the Mastermind, unleashing Lickers, Hunters, zombies, and other monsters against a team of four survivor players. This double dose of RE is just around the corner… Final Fantasy VII Remake April 10 Step into the boots of Cloud Strife, a former soldier of the evil Shinra Company. Once part of the organization sapping the planet’s Mako life force for profit, Cloud now partners with scrappy resistance fighters to take the company down. His partners in crime include the hard-hitting Tifa, hot-headed Barret, and a mysterious flower girl named Aerith. Though Cloud’s motives are his own, he still fights with everything he’s got. Final Fantasy VII Remake’s battle system combines thoughtful RPG combat with intense, eye-popping action. Battles shift to slow motion as players plan their next move, causing sparks and bullets to move dramatically across the screen. Like a ticking bomb attached to Midgar’s Mako Reactor — Final Fantasy VII Remake is primed to blow RPG fans away. Predator: Hunting Grounds April 24 Prepare to enter the jungle for a battle between the iconic Predator and an expertly trained Fireteam. Illfonic’s asymmetrical online multiplayer game lets players choose their preferred Predator class and stalk the competition with ruthless efficiency. The versatile Hunter brings a balanced ability set to battle. The intimidating Berserker devastates enemies with boosted power and health. The swift Scout benefits from increased speed and stamina. The Fireteam also has an arsenal of weapons to combat their extraterrestrial foe, including assault rifles, shotguns, and more. It’s nearly time to collect your battle trophies. The Last of Us Part II May 29 Ellie’s story continues in an unforgiving, post-pandemic world. She’s scraped together a life alongside the community of Jackson County, Wyoming. Naughty Dog has revealed some captivating story details, including Ellie’s fledgling romance with the endearing Dina, and the fact that her journey leads towards the overgrown remains of Seattle. The Last of Us Part II’s gameplay also evolves what it means to survive amidst violent survivors and menacing Infected. Ellie’s new skills and abilities let her perform a dodge, stealth through more areas, craft improvised pistol silencers, and much more. Words can’t effectively convey how excited we are to play the sequel to PlayStation fans’ Game of the Decade. What release of early 2020 are you most excited for? View the full article

  10. The entire team at NetherRealm is thrilled to add The Joker as the latest guest fighter to join the Mortal Kombat 11 roster. The Clown Prince of Crime is definitely an easy fit and a welcomed addition to the Mortal Kombat universe. Although we’ve worked with The Joker character before, our designers and artists were unleashed to plumb the depths of his madness like never before. The result is the nastiest and most vicious version of The Joker that our studio has ever created. There are many gameplay examples that showcase this dark portrayal, including The Joker’s Fatal Blow, where the infamous clown hammers his opponent to a bloody pulp with a cane, which is a nod to the beating of Jason Todd in the classic comic book storyline from Batman: A Death in the Family. Of course, this homage to The Joker’s lore is just one of many. Mortal Kombat fans are big supporters of when we honor a character’s past so our creative team always tries to dig deep. There are cinematic events that reinterpret famous comic book panels, dialogue that pays tribute to The Joker’s most memorable speeches and moves and moments that recall his previous visit to the Mortal Kombat universe. The Mortal Kombat 11 crossover with DC Comics doesn’t end there, however. Our studio had a lot of fun designing new skins that mashup characters from the two universes. It’s almost Halloween in January as Kitana plays the sleek Katwoman of Outworld, Baraka transforms into the reptilian Killer Croc and Geras is reborn as the Time Lord of Apokolips, a perfect nod to Darkseid. The creative team’s favorite character skin though has to be The Batman Who Laughs version of Noob Saibot as the menacing Darkest Knight. It’s really a perfect blend of the characters and a perfect fit for Mortal Kombat 11. Don’t forget, The Joker DLC drops on January 28 as part of the early access period for Kombat Pack owners, followed by wide (à la carte) availability on February 4. Enjoy! View the full article

  15. One year ago, Capcom resurrected its survival horror opus, Resident Evil 2, to terrify a whole new generation. A complete rebuild of the PSone classic, Remake managed to hit the iconic highs of the original, introduce fresh surprises and give us one of the most memorable bogeymen of the PS4 era in the form of Mr. X. While remakes are no longer a rarity, fan furor behind this particular project — before the first trailer debuted and even before it was even officially announced by the studio — underscored how highly regarded the 1998 release was, and still is. Any trepidation to the gameplay changes being wrought by the developer dissipated as soon as players took their first few steps into a remodelled yet eerily familiar RPD Police Station. To mark the game’s one year anniversary, we asked key members of its development staff — Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, Director Kazunori Kadoi, Art Director Satoshi Takamatsu and Composer Shusaku Uchiyama — to recollect key moments from its development. Below are their personal accounts and memories, starting with the original pitch and finishing with the game’s launch in 2019. Enjoy. The story behind the original pitch Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi: “We’ve spoken about this a lot since the game was announced, but we’ve always had many fans telling us they want us to remake Resident Evil 2. We considered it several times over the years, but it’s a tough proposition to make a great remake out of this classic game, and we never got it off the ground. Finally, after some years, the timing was right and we talked about remaking RE2 again, and this time we were able to get the go-ahead to proceed with development. Some fans may remember that as soon as we did this, we did our “We Do It” announcement on social media in August 2015, because we were so excited to be able to confirm the game was in the works. To the team, which was still relatively small back then, this felt like the real start of the hard work!” The moment when the team realized the new design would work Director Kazunori Kadoi: For me, I think it was when we first got the visuals and gameplay functions of the zombies all working in tandem and were able to playtest shooting them, taking off limbs with well-placed shots and so on. It felt great and it didn’t get boring no matter how much you did it, and that made me feel like this game really had something special. The team’s biggest challenge Director Kazunori Kadoi: Well, since it’s a remake and the original is a game which already has many, many fans around the world, the biggest challenge was really in not betraying the expectations of those fans while also keeping the remake fresh. Balancing these aspects was a tough juggling act during development and required many tough decisions. Art Director Satoshi Takamatsu on redesigning RE2’s iconic characters Leon It was important to retain the look Leon had in the original, emphasizing the fact that, as this is his first appearance in the series chronologically, he’s very much a “greenhorn” rookie. I also wanted to bring a more realistic touch to his police officer’s outfit and accessories — no more shoulder pads! We actually worked with a military gear manufacturer to this end. Claire As with Leon, I felt that we had to bring a balance of respecting her original design while bringing the realism that is expected of a modern title. Claire likes motorbikes and is very active, so I wanted to redesign her in a way that reflected her personality and showed that she is an attractive, strong person. She has her iconic red biker jacket which of course had to stay, but we had the design on the back redone from scratch by our other art director, a British guy called Gez Fry. Ada Ada’s a character who means a lot to both the fans and the development team, and she was really tough to design for this remake. We had so many iterations of her costume, and it took over six months of auditions before we settled on her face model. After all that work, I was glad to see that the fans seemed to like her new look! Getting positive feedback makes the effort worth it. Sherry I approached the redesign of Sherry by thinking that she should not just be a stock “cute little girl” character, but have some depth to her and make her a character that you could get attached to, and who you want to protect. For Sherry, Claire and Ada, the art director from Resident Evil 7, Tomonori Takano, joined the team and helped us. Tyrant In the original Resident Evil 2, the Tyrant is dropped in from a helicopter, but in the new game we approached his design based on his original concept: an infiltrator who will relentlessly pursue his target until he can exterminate them. This is why he hides his face with a hat, although I guess he hasn’t been totally successful in doing so… (laughs) It’s been great to see how scary players found him and how much they love him as a character. The game’s new score and its sound design Composer Shusaku Uchiyama: The issue of how to create sound design and music that would both be modern and fitting for a new game in 2019, and also bring to mind the sound of a game released 20 years ago, was a tough one, but it was also a fun and rewarding experience to tackle that challenge together as a team. Watching fan reaction to the game’s reveal Play Video Director Kazunori Kadoi: The whole development team got together in our office to watch the E3 announcement in real time. We didn’t think that a game which is “just” a remake would garner such a massive reaction, so we were surprised and delighted to see the response. Not only that but once reactions to the gameplay on the E3 booth started to hit, we saw that people loved it, and we even got some show awards! This was both the highest praise for me as a director, and also somehow a kind of additional pressure for the remaining months of the project (laughs). Celebrating the game going gold Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi: Once the game went gold, we had a big party together. I could see from everyone’s expressions that each and every team member had a huge sense of achievement at finally getting to this point, and we chatted about the various difficulties we’d had during the project, the fans’ impressions of the gameplay and so on. Actually, the project leaders including myself wanted to have this kind of “behind the curtain” discussion be available for fans to see what we really talk about, so we had another dev team roundtable session separately, which was filmed and put online. If any of your readers are interested in hearing lots of great stories and anecdotes from the development of Resident Evil 2, including an appearance by the original game’s director, Shinji Mikami, please check this video series out! Here are the YouTube links. Resident Evil 2 Roundtable Part 1: The team didn’t actually know they were being filmed yet during this part! So, you get some really frank discussion (laughs). Resident Evil 2 Roundtable Part 2: This section has some images and video clips from the game’s development that aren’t available anywhere else! Resident Evil 2 Roundtable Part 3: In this part, none other than Shinji Mikami, the original game’s director, joins us for a discussion with the remake directors. These three all joined Capcom at the same time, so they go way back! They even discuss the fabled “RE1.5” and we show some footage. Resident Evil 2 Roundtable Part 4: We originally only planned three parts of this series, but we had some more great anecdotes, so we added a bonus fourth part. View the full article

  18. Happy New Year samurai! We kicked off 2020 with a look at how your feedback from the recent beta is helping us shape an even better gameplay experience in Nioh 2. And today we’re happy to share with you our dramatic new story trailer for Nioh 2. Check it out above! I’m very proud of the work that our production team has put into this trailer and genuinely excited for you guys to check this out as it gives you a glimpse into some of the characters and backstory for our upcoming game. Let me give you some additional context before you settle down to watch the trailer. In order to help prepare you guys for your viewing pleasure, allow me to set the stage… A war-torn realm haunted by evil spirits It is the Warring States period in Japan. The year is 1555. Never-ending warfare has transformed the nation into a land of chaos infested by demonic yokai, evil spirits who feed upon their victims. It is in this setting of relentless mayhem that we meet our protagonist, a rogue mercenary hunting down yokai in the Mino Province. This demon hunter hides a terrible secret: they are a half-breed, the orphan offspring of both human and yokai blood. Unable to find a place amongst mankind, our demon hunter journeys alone. Calamity strikes one day as our protagonist loses control of their own yokai power while battling against a ferocious fiend. However, the dire situation is remedied by a wandering merchant by the name of Toukichiro who sells strange “Spirit Stones”; magic—imbued artifacts that can help the wielder communicate with yokai spirits. Our demon hunter regains control of their demonic persona. From there on, the two decide to combine their abilities and set out together to find more of the powerful Spirit Stones, their quest being funded by an influential warlord to track down the artifacts to ensure they’re reserved for proper use. Nioh 2 | More New Screenshots Their mission is cut short by an attack from someone – or something – also seeking the stones. They escape thanks to the help of a yokai huntswoman named Mumyo, and the three find refuge in the Owari Province, eventually ending up in the service of the great Oda Nobunaga. But their future plans will be short-lived and they will once more come face to face with diabolical forces who also seek the remaining Spirit Stones. The stage is set for this epic saga of our half-breed yokai hunter- “Hideyoshi”. Nioh 2’s post-launch DLC I’d like to share some exciting details regarding our upcoming DLC and Season Pass plans with you guys. We have three major DLC releases planned, with each focusing on a different storyline that pre-dates the events of Nioh 2, promising hours of additional gameplay that will provide plenty of challenge for those thirsting for more. Similar to the original Nioh, players can expect new weapons, new combat abilities and new characters, with each DLC incorporating both multiple main and sub-missions. The three DLC packs are included in Nioh 2’s Season Pass, which forms part of the game’s Digital Deluxe Edition (now available for pre-order). In addition to the main game and DLC, you’ll also get premium in-game items such as the Demon Horde armor set and Kodama Netsuke Charm. For players who purchase the Nioh 2 Special Edition, in addition to the main game and Season Pass, you’ll receive an exclusive SteelBook case and “The Art of Nioh 2” booklet. We have less than 2 months to go until the release of Nioh 2. We can’t wait to share it with you guys! I’ll be back soon, so please stay tuned for more information in the weeks to come. And as always, thank you for your support and enthusiasm samurai! View the full article

  20. It’s hard to believe, but Kingdom Hearts III was released nearly one year ago. This year, fans have the Re Mind DLC to look forward to, which will shed new light on the game’s bittersweet ending. Ahead of the January 23 launch of Re Mind DLC on PS4, the Square Enix team sat down with the game’s prolific director, Tetsuya Nomura, to discuss his thoughts on the game, his work, and what’s to come. Square Enix: 2019 was a really big year for you! Looking back on Kingdom Hearts III, what part of that game are you most proud of? Tetsuya Nomura: Everything, as I couldn’t put anything out there that I couldn’t stand behind with confidence. I did all that I could given all the different conditions that could arise during development. SE: Out of all the plotlines that are resolved in Kingdom Hearts III, which was the most meaningful to you? TN: A lot of things come to mind, but maybe Xigbar, because we spent a long time getting him to where he is. SE: The fans really seemed to enjoy the updated character designs in Kingdom Hearts III. Which of them are you most happy about? TN: For each of them, I would feel satisfied once I finished drawing, but after a bit of time, I would end up thinking about what I would like to do differently next time. SE: Back in April of 2019, you released the Critical Mode update, which added this higher difficulty mode to the game. Have you played Critical Mode yourself, and do you have any tips? TN: With my ability, not at all. Judging by the videos that have been uploaded online, I think the players’ gameplay would offer more insight than I can provide. SE: Are there any important details in Kingdom Hearts III which you haven’t seen fans pick up on yet? TN: If I were to say something like “the true identity of so-and-so,” for example, that would spoil the surprise for people later on. So, I can’t say anything specific, but sometimes I do see interpretations that make me think they could be overthinking things. SE: With the Re Mind DLC launching tomorrow, what are you most excited for players to experience there? TN: I’m always amazed by the KH fans’ interpretations, and I’m looking forward to how they analyze things this time as well. SE: Finally, we have to ask… Which Keyblade would you personally like to wield yourself? TN: Master Xehanort’s Keyblade. The Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind DLC launches tomorrow on January 23 on PS4. Fans can pick up the Re Mind + Concert Video package to receive 19 exclusive music tracks recorded from the World of Tres Orchestra Concert, which combine gorgeous music with live concert and in-game footage. The base Re Mind DLC package is also available for pre-order. View the full article

  22. It’s so exciting to develop the first Fairy Tail video game to ever hit PlayStation 4. We’re working on it under the supervision of the brilliant Mashima-san, the creator of the popular anime and manga series, to deliver a truly spectacular experience that captures both the quirkiness and intensity of the characters — from Fairy Tail members like the fiery Natsu Dragneel to all of the demons, dark wizards and cats (Happy rules!) that help make the series so beloved by fans across the globe. One of the features that truly excites me, though, is the fact that with the help of Mashima-san, we’ve actually laid out an amazing 3D model of Fairy Tail’s iconic city, Magnolia, a city that you’ll be able to explore on virtual-foot, discovering everything from the Fairy Tail Guild to Lucy’s house to special Easter eggs like Nikora’s hidden candy. Behind the scenes, game designers worked for six months to create every brick, bridge, and building you’ll be able to explore in the game. We looked at any and all reference material we could find on the town in order to lay it out as accurately as possible. We read the comics, we extracted scenes from the anime, consulted the anime setting materials, and we were even able to find reference data from older illustrations to help us along the way. From there, we laid everything out in 3D, then went back to Mashima-san, and he was able to give us further advice to help sculpt the final setting. In the end, we created a final design which works for an RPG, while at the same time integrating functionality and the appropriate visuals – including all of the symbolic buildings and landmarks you’re looking for – in a dynamic way that truly pops off screen. After months and months of hard work, we were eventually able to flip the image we had in our minds into the breathtaking and immersive town you’ll now be able to experience in our unique RPG. I still remember the overwhelming feelings I had as a Fairy Tail fan the first time I was able to run around Magnolia, and I’m convinced fans will feel the same as they explore the vibrant town and talk to various characters to discover everything there is to know about the Fairy Tail guild. In the Fairy Tail guild you’ll be able to upgrade the facilities like the shop and laboratory, then head to Lucy’s house to change costumes or read about various adventures in her numerous picture books. But that’s not all, as depending on how things play out in town, you might even find yourself in a fiery fight on the streets of Magnolia! Check out the exclusive video above to see our 3D version of Magnolia, then check it out for yourself this Spring when Fairy Tail arrives on consoles. From the streets of Magnolia to seeing how things like the Fairy Tail guild actually work in our RPG, we hope fans will become as enamored with our game as they’ve become with the anime and comics throughout the years. We’re really looking forward to delivering to fans something special. View the full article
  23. The way Doom Eternal’s executive producer Marty Stratton tells it, the game is “speed chess,” “a page turner,” and “junk food with nutritional value.” These catchy, metaphorical zingers pepper the opening talk he gives to an assembled crowd ahead of a preview tour hands-on. While those comparisons are delivered with a smile, Stratton feels justified in making them. Later on the 24-year veteran of the studio that birthed Doom, has a simpler, more straightforward description of their new action shooter: “this is the best game we’ve ever made.” A not unheard-of claim. Yet over his half-hour presentation and our subsequent interview that ran nearly as long, he makes a compelling case for that belief, pointing to the studio’s learnings from a post-mortem of the series’ reboot, released on PS4 in 2016. He’s surprisingly open about the problems they identified: an increasingly repetitive campaign. A lack of visual variation. Unintended player exploits. A by-the-numbers multiplayer. Basic post-launch support. Despite critical acclaim and still-passionate player base (“the number of people still playing this on a monthly basis would surprise you,” he says) the message was simple: id Software needed to do better. Doom Eternal sets out to answer each of those issues. And although the game’s single player campaign promises to be double the length of 2016’s and boasts a similar increase in enemy types, Stratton is keen to stress that “better” didn’t equate to “bigger.” “More isn’t enough,” he reinforces. If the core concern was monotony, then the solution was simple: variety. That word, that sentiment, defined every design decision for the sequel, impacting gameplay, visuals, story. Stratton explains the four month delay (from last November) was needed to fix bugs and polish every aspect of the game. “It just needs to be great,” he says. The result is, as Marty refers to it, a page turner. “We’re always introducing something new, even in the game’s later stages: new enemies, new mechanics, new visuals. You’re doing things you haven’t ever done in a Doom game before. It’s hard to get up from.” Choose your rip-and-tear adventure Make no mistake: battling through demon-filled arenas is still the beating heart of Doom’s action-orientated gameplay. Your decisions still need to be razor-sharp, your reactions whip-fast (if not faster with the addition of a dash ability). Your tactical choices though? They’ve multiplied. Injure a demon enough in Doom and you’d stagger them, their glowing aura a visual indicator they were primed for a Glory Kill. Do so, and a generous supply of health pickups spew from the remains. Be aggressive, stay healthy. Eternal expands the idea: Chainsaw Kills earn you ammo, cook demons with your flamethrower to net yourself additional armor. Attack to stay well-stocked. But chainsaws need gas, flamethrowers take time to recharge. Glory Kills require a demon to be shot into submission first. Conservation of equipment is another strategy to consider on the battlefield. But that consideration is something I’m familiar with from a previous hands-on. Today, as the game’s opening hour introduces me to a retooled take of modern day Doom’s gameplay, I can focus on the other alterations. A road trip of biblical proportions I spend that hour battling my way across a ravaged cityscape Earth-side. Not an unusual setting for the genre, but the ruined beauty of id Software’s take is inarguably stunning in both scale and detail: bow down before the power of id Tech 7. It’s sumptuous to behold and also diverse in its layout. I battle demonic legions across fractured city streets, blast my way up the interior floors of devastated skyscrapers and go toe-to-toe with unearthly horrors through darkened shopping malls. It’s a far cry from the uniformity of Mars’ red dunes and rusted architecture. There’s also an increased verticality to levels, Early arena brawls have me pairing grabbable monkey bars with double-jumps to propel myself further and higher, a pinball of retribution. Outside of combat I’m wall-climbing up shattered land masses or leaping down into car parks turned valley floors due to earthquakes. id Software layer world history in its level architecture, such as this hulking, partly-destroyed mecha There are also environmental dangers to contend with. I experience first-hand fire-belching pipes that complicate a vertical ascent and elsewhere demonic walls that spit flame down mall corridors, forcing to me dodge into store fronts and use mannequins as cover. And Earth promises to be just the first stop. By the campaign’s end, you’ll have shot your way across the solar system, kicked in Hell’s door and knocked on Heaven’s own. It’s tantalising to consider what id Software’s artists have imagined for Hell’s opposite. Aside from the story implications that the studio is inferring ahead of launch, Stratton is just jazzed for players to experience the levels set heaven-ward, which include his favourite level in the entire campaign. That levels feel more diverse and come stockpiled with environmental puzzles and secrets all stem from the studio’s desire to further diversify gameplay outside of combat encounters. Scouring a level of secrets isn’t new for the series, but many of Doom Eternal’s will be closer to the critical path, part of a fundamental philosophy of keeping everything in this sequel “within arm’s reach” of the player, encouraging exploration. Level automaps return, improved UI highlighting areas of interest to further nudge inquisitive players to seek out more carefully hidden collectables. These can offer gameplay changes, player buffs or cool in-universe merch. We got further details on the game hub mentioned by the studio last year. The Fortress of Doom is a floating base above Earth, and will gradually be populated by certain collectables found during the campaign, such as vinyls, figurines and more. Difficulties to suit all tastes, both in campaign and multiplayer Completing Doom 2016 unlocked Ultra-Nightmare difficulty, challenging you to re-run the campaign without dying. Here, it’s available from the start, rubbing shoulders on the game’s menu screen with all-new Extra Lives mode. Here’s how that works: collectable 1-ups are already secreted around each level. Collect and instead of a reload and checkpoint respawn come death, your health is instead restocked and a brief period of invulnerability gained. The studio liked that old school approach enough to build an entire campaign mode around it. Master Levels is a brilliant remix of mission levels coming post-launch, populating earlier stages with more powerful enemies originally only introduced late into the campaign Nicely the studio has also added opt-in support for those struggling with tougher boss fights: Sentinel armor will be deployed near the player after a certain number of deaths, granting them a health and armour buff. The mechanics, Stratton stresses, stay the same. It’s just a helping hand to deflect any frustration and keep players immersed in the campaign. That wish to accommodate for more than just the reaction-perfect Slayers is one of the explanations for a fundamental shift in multiplayer. The game launches with Battlemode, a 2v1 clash played out in tight arenas between two demon-controlling players and a lone Slayer. Conceived and built in-house at id Software, the intent is to add some depth to the multiplayer arm of the Doom experience, making winning multiplayer matches more about great strategies than twitch-based kills. As with everything else in Doom Eternal, your familiar arsenal has been tweaked. Example: When your Plasma Rifle ‘pops’ enemy shields, the resulting explosion electrifies anyone nearby Equally as intriguing is the post-launch Invasion mode, opting in to which allows any other player to take control of any demon in your game. Tailored to the core who know campaign levels inside out, Stratton believes it feels a natural extension of the Doom experience. That mode is just one idea of an extensive post-launch support plan, which includes everything from meaty DLC expansions to cosmetic skins. But the exact details remain a mystery. We’ll have to wait until closer to March’s launch. Even without the post-launch roadmap, there’s plenty to get excited about here. A robust, varied single player mode, the kind of meaty campaign that promises to swallow you whole if you’d let it. Test your skills and wits in combat which, while still core to the experience, gels better with moments of exploration. There are secrets to track down if you have the mind to do so, and different modes to lose yourself in, catering to both lone wolf and social player. An action shooter that’s filling as well as thrilling? Junk food with nutritional value indeed, Marty. Composer Mick Gordon is again on top form with this sequel soundtrack, with the game opening on a remix of the classic Doom theme that is still buzzing in my head days after View the full article
  24. I’m Buddy Sola, Community Manager at Akupara Games. Last year, Akupara published Die Gute Fabrik’s Mutazione — a mutant soap opera where the mundane meets the supernatural — to rave reviews both from fans as well as critics. We’re now delighted to release our first big content update: Garden Mode, which is available to play today. Mutazione has always been a very story-driven game, but interwoven with the story is the magical musical gardening mechanic. You explore the island to gather seeds to plant in gardens to help heal the community around you. Each plant carries the song of a specific instrument; those instruments are bound together into moods. Planting gardens that align with those moods will help you accomplish your narrative goal, as you build beautiful procedural ambient compositions. In this update you will now be able to access a standalone Garden Mode, where there’s only a garden, the seeds, the music, and you. We always intended for players to have more room to experiment with the musical toy at the heart of the gardens, but to make the storytelling effective, we needed to link the gardens to progress through the plot. That’s why Garden Mode was the very first major update we wanted to release for the game. In Story Mode, there are restrictions to help keep the storytelling effective. In Garden Mode, the plants, composition, and timescales are entirely up to you. What’s more, the gardens will evolve on their own over time — you can set up a composition and watch it change as new seeds blow in, old plants die, and the composition evolves before your very eyes (ears!). It’s designed for you to play with, but also to leave running as part of your life, as you cook, or work, creating unique ambient soundtracks over time. The significance of the Cloud Garden will be clear to keen-eyed players who have completed the game. It will support any of the seeds you find in Story Mode (if planted in the correct soil with sufficient space), as well as some new seeds we’re adding to the game for this update. This update includes hundreds of new music clips as well, so the possibilities for you to create your own ambient music are even greater. My favorite combination so far is Crab Tree, Neejon Palm, Hobble Berry and P-lily, which are: surf guitar, trumpet, bassoon, and piano respectively. It reminds me of tucked-away jazz clubs. I spend a ton of my time as Community Manager talking with fans of the game about what they loved in their Mutazione experience. What I hear, constantly and consistently, is how moving the musical gameplay of the gardens is for them. “All the different songs in this were able to perfectly portray exactly what the characters are going through,” one user wrote in a review of the game. Another reports: “The best part of the game was the gardening; it was fun to arrange and grow the different plants and explore the island to find new seeds.” If you’re a player like this, who likes to sit back, relax and take in the ambience of it all, then we made Garden Mode for you. More Mutazione news will be coming over the course of the year. After releasing the game in September, the soundtrack in October, and now Garden Mode, we’re humbled by the response we’ve gotten so far, including the four nominations Mutazione just received from the Independent Games Festival at GDC. If you haven’t picked up Mutazione yet, you can find it for the PS4 at PlayStation Store. We can’t wait to hear what you make of it. View the full article
  25. Hey! We are V1 Interactive, a small studio that is currently developing Disintegration. We’ve been working nonstop for the last few months for this moment to finally arrive: we are super excited to announce Disintegration’s Technical Beta. For those who aren’t familiar with it, Disintegration is a sci-fi FPS in which you pilot a hovering, weaponized vehicle called a gravcycle, while you tactically command your squad around the battlefield. Set on Earth in a not-so-distant future where humanity’s last chance of survival is to replace their bodies with robotic armatures, the single player campaign focuses on Romer Shoal’s story and his fight against the Rayonne to regain his humanity. Although we have been putting a lot of work into the campaign, we’ve also been working hard to ensure Disintegration’s multiplayer is fast, frenetic, and a lot of fun. The multiplayer game pits you against other players in up to 5v5 matches with you and your individual squads on the ground. The unique game modes, blending aerial combat and squad commands across several different modes and maps, are sure to test not only your shooter skills, but also your tactical approach on the battlefield. We let players at Pax West get hands on with the game, but the time has come to put Disintegration’s multiplayer into a real stress test — that’s why we are running our Technical Beta at the end of January. Disintegration’s Technical Beta will include two maps and two different modes. You can also choose between seven different crews each with their own weapons, abilities, and role in combat. We are overwhelmed with all the support and encouraging words we have received so far from the community, but now we need to ask a favor to all of you: join the Technical Beta, coordinate with your team, command your units, and most importantly, have fun! You may see bugs, frame rate issues, or other odd behavior. That’s what we’re looking to resolve. Play it, test it out in every way possible, then give us your honest feedback. Your feedback is key for us to try and make Disintegration the best that it can be. So sign up now to have a chance to participate in the Closed Technical Beta January 28-30. However, don’t worry if you don’t get the chance to join the closed session! You can always play the Open Technical Beta at PlayStation Store, that will run from January 31 to February 1. You can find all the information on Disintegration and details about the Technical Beta at www.disintegrationgame.com. Time to jump onto your gravcycles and reboot humanity! View the full article
