  2. It’s so exciting to develop the first Fairy Tail video game to ever hit PlayStation 4. We’re working on it under the supervision of the brilliant Mashima-san, the creator of the popular anime and manga series, to deliver a truly spectacular experience that captures both the quirkiness and intensity of the characters — from Fairy Tail members like the fiery Natsu Dragneel to all of the demons, dark wizards and cats (Happy rules!) that help make the series so beloved by fans across the globe. One of the features that truly excites me, though, is the fact that with the help of Mashima-san, we’ve actually laid out an amazing 3D model of Fairy Tail’s iconic city, Magnolia, a city that you’ll be able to explore on virtual-foot, discovering everything from the Fairy Tail Guild to Lucy’s house to special Easter eggs like Nikora’s hidden candy. Behind the scenes, game designers worked for six months to create every brick, bridge, and building you’ll be able to explore in the game. We looked at any and all reference material we could find on the town in order to lay it out as accurately as possible. We read the comics, we extracted scenes from the anime, consulted the anime setting materials, and we were even able to find reference data from older illustrations to help us along the way. From there, we laid everything out in 3D, then went back to Mashima-san, and he was able to give us further advice to help sculpt the final setting. In the end, we created a final design which works for an RPG, while at the same time integrating functionality and the appropriate visuals – including all of the symbolic buildings and landmarks you’re looking for – in a dynamic way that truly pops off screen. After months and months of hard work, we were eventually able to flip the image we had in our minds into the breathtaking and immersive town you’ll now be able to experience in our unique RPG. I still remember the overwhelming feelings I had as a Fairy Tail fan the first time I was able to run around Magnolia, and I’m convinced fans will feel the same as they explore the vibrant town and talk to various characters to discover everything there is to know about the Fairy Tail guild. In the Fairy Tail guild you’ll be able to upgrade the facilities like the shop and laboratory, then head to Lucy’s house to change costumes or read about various adventures in her numerous picture books. But that’s not all, as depending on how things play out in town, you might even find yourself in a fiery fight on the streets of Magnolia! Check out the exclusive video above to see our 3D version of Magnolia, then check it out for yourself this Spring when Fairy Tail arrives on consoles. From the streets of Magnolia to seeing how things like the Fairy Tail guild actually work in our RPG, we hope fans will become as enamored with our game as they’ve become with the anime and comics throughout the years. We’re really looking forward to delivering to fans something special. View the full article
  3. The way Doom Eternal’s executive producer Marty Stratton tells it, the game is “speed chess,” “a page turner,” and “junk food with nutritional value.” These catchy, metaphorical zingers pepper the opening talk he gives to an assembled crowd ahead of a preview tour hands-on. While those comparisons are delivered with a smile, Stratton feels justified in making them. Later on the 24-year veteran of the studio that birthed Doom, has a simpler, more straightforward description of their new action shooter: “this is the best game we’ve ever made.” A not unheard-of claim. Yet over his half-hour presentation and our subsequent interview that ran nearly as long, he makes a compelling case for that belief, pointing to the studio’s learnings from a post-mortem of the series’ reboot, released on PS4 in 2016. He’s surprisingly open about the problems they identified: an increasingly repetitive campaign. A lack of visual variation. Unintended player exploits. A by-the-numbers multiplayer. Basic post-launch support. Despite critical acclaim and still-passionate player base (“the number of people still playing this on a monthly basis would surprise you,” he says) the message was simple: id Software needed to do better. Doom Eternal sets out to answer each of those issues. And although the game’s single player campaign promises to be double the length of 2016’s and boasts a similar increase in enemy types, Stratton is keen to stress that “better” didn’t equate to “bigger.” “More isn’t enough,” he reinforces. If the core concern was monotony, then the solution was simple: variety. That word, that sentiment, defined every design decision for the sequel, impacting gameplay, visuals, story. Stratton explains the four month delay (from last November) was needed to fix bugs and polish every aspect of the game. “It just needs to be great,” he says. The result is, as Marty refers to it, a page turner. “We’re always introducing something new, even in the game’s later stages: new enemies, new mechanics, new visuals. You’re doing things you haven’t ever done in a Doom game before. It’s hard to get up from.” Choose your rip-and-tear adventure Make no mistake: battling through demon-filled arenas is still the beating heart of Doom’s action-orientated gameplay. Your decisions still need to be razor-sharp, your reactions whip-fast (if not faster with the addition of a dash ability). Your tactical choices though? They’ve multiplied. Injure a demon enough in Doom and you’d stagger them, their glowing aura a visual indicator they were primed for a Glory Kill. Do so, and a generous supply of health pickups spew from the remains. Be aggressive, stay healthy. Eternal expands the idea: Chainsaw Kills earn you ammo, cook demons with your flamethrower to net yourself additional armor. Attack to stay well-stocked. But chainsaws need gas, flamethrowers take time to recharge. Glory Kills require a demon to be shot into submission first. Conservation of equipment is another strategy to consider on the battlefield. But that consideration is something I’m familiar with from a previous hands-on. Today, as the game’s opening hour introduces me to a retooled take of modern day Doom’s gameplay, I can focus on the other alterations. A road trip of biblical proportions I spend that hour battling my way across a ravaged cityscape Earth-side. Not an unusual setting for the genre, but the ruined beauty of id Software’s take is inarguably stunning in both scale and detail: bow down before the power of id Tech 7. It’s sumptuous to behold and also diverse in its layout. I battle demonic legions across fractured city streets, blast my way up the interior floors of devastated skyscrapers and go toe-to-toe with unearthly horrors through darkened shopping malls. It’s a far cry from the uniformity of Mars’ red dunes and rusted architecture. There’s also an increased verticality to levels, Early arena brawls have me pairing grabbable monkey bars with double-jumps to propel myself further and higher, a pinball of retribution. Outside of combat I’m wall-climbing up shattered land masses or leaping down into car parks turned valley floors due to earthquakes. id Software layer world history in its level architecture, such as this hulking, partly-destroyed mecha There are also environmental dangers to contend with. I experience first-hand fire-belching pipes that complicate a vertical ascent and elsewhere demonic walls that spit flame down mall corridors, forcing to me dodge into store fronts and use mannequins as cover. And Earth promises to be just the first stop. By the campaign’s end, you’ll have shot your way across the solar system, kicked in Hell’s door and knocked on Heaven’s own. It’s tantalising to consider what id Software’s artists have imagined for Hell’s opposite. Aside from the story implications that the studio is inferring ahead of launch, Stratton is just jazzed for players to experience the levels set heaven-ward, which include his favourite level in the entire campaign. That levels feel more diverse and come stockpiled with environmental puzzles and secrets all stem from the studio’s desire to further diversify gameplay outside of combat encounters. Scouring a level of secrets isn’t new for the series, but many of Doom Eternal’s will be closer to the critical path, part of a fundamental philosophy of keeping everything in this sequel “within arm’s reach” of the player, encouraging exploration. Level automaps return, improved UI highlighting areas of interest to further nudge inquisitive players to seek out more carefully hidden collectables. These can offer gameplay changes, player buffs or cool in-universe merch. We got further details on the game hub mentioned by the studio last year. The Fortress of Doom is a floating base above Earth, and will gradually be populated by certain collectables found during the campaign, such as vinyls, figurines and more. Difficulties to suit all tastes, both in campaign and multiplayer Completing Doom 2016 unlocked Ultra-Nightmare difficulty, challenging you to re-run the campaign without dying. Here, it’s available from the start, rubbing shoulders on the game’s menu screen with all-new Extra Lives mode. Here’s how that works: collectable 1-ups are already secreted around each level. Collect and instead of a reload and checkpoint respawn come death, your health is instead restocked and a brief period of invulnerability gained. The studio liked that old school approach enough to build an entire campaign mode around it. Master Levels is a brilliant remix of mission levels coming post-launch, populating earlier stages with more powerful enemies originally only introduced late into the campaign Nicely the studio has also added opt-in support for those struggling with tougher boss fights: Sentinel armor will be deployed near the player after a certain number of deaths, granting them a health and armour buff. The mechanics, Stratton stresses, stay the same. It’s just a helping hand to deflect any frustration and keep players immersed in the campaign. That wish to accommodate for more than just the reaction-perfect Slayers is one of the explanations for a fundamental shift in multiplayer. The game launches with Battlemode, a 2v1 clash played out in tight arenas between two demon-controlling players and a lone Slayer. Conceived and built in-house at id Software, the intent is to add some depth to the multiplayer arm of the Doom experience, making winning multiplayer matches more about great strategies than twitch-based kills. As with everything else in Doom Eternal, your familiar arsenal has been tweaked. Example: When your Plasma Rifle ‘pops’ enemy shields, the resulting explosion electrifies anyone nearby Equally as intriguing is the post-launch Invasion mode, opting in to which allows any other player to take control of any demon in your game. Tailored to the core who know campaign levels inside out, Stratton believes it feels a natural extension of the Doom experience. That mode is just one idea of an extensive post-launch support plan, which includes everything from meaty DLC expansions to cosmetic skins. But the exact details remain a mystery. We’ll have to wait until closer to March’s launch. Even without the post-launch roadmap, there’s plenty to get excited about here. A robust, varied single player mode, the kind of meaty campaign that promises to swallow you whole if you’d let it. Test your skills and wits in combat which, while still core to the experience, gels better with moments of exploration. There are secrets to track down if you have the mind to do so, and different modes to lose yourself in, catering to both lone wolf and social player. An action shooter that’s filling as well as thrilling? Junk food with nutritional value indeed, Marty. Composer Mick Gordon is again on top form with this sequel soundtrack, with the game opening on a remix of the classic Doom theme that is still buzzing in my head days after View the full article
  4. I’m Buddy Sola, Community Manager at Akupara Games. Last year, Akupara published Die Gute Fabrik’s Mutazione — a mutant soap opera where the mundane meets the supernatural — to rave reviews both from fans as well as critics. We’re now delighted to release our first big content update: Garden Mode, which is available to play today. Mutazione has always been a very story-driven game, but interwoven with the story is the magical musical gardening mechanic. You explore the island to gather seeds to plant in gardens to help heal the community around you. Each plant carries the song of a specific instrument; those instruments are bound together into moods. Planting gardens that align with those moods will help you accomplish your narrative goal, as you build beautiful procedural ambient compositions. In this update you will now be able to access a standalone Garden Mode, where there’s only a garden, the seeds, the music, and you. We always intended for players to have more room to experiment with the musical toy at the heart of the gardens, but to make the storytelling effective, we needed to link the gardens to progress through the plot. That’s why Garden Mode was the very first major update we wanted to release for the game. In Story Mode, there are restrictions to help keep the storytelling effective. In Garden Mode, the plants, composition, and timescales are entirely up to you. What’s more, the gardens will evolve on their own over time — you can set up a composition and watch it change as new seeds blow in, old plants die, and the composition evolves before your very eyes (ears!). It’s designed for you to play with, but also to leave running as part of your life, as you cook, or work, creating unique ambient soundtracks over time. The significance of the Cloud Garden will be clear to keen-eyed players who have completed the game. It will support any of the seeds you find in Story Mode (if planted in the correct soil with sufficient space), as well as some new seeds we’re adding to the game for this update. This update includes hundreds of new music clips as well, so the possibilities for you to create your own ambient music are even greater. My favorite combination so far is Crab Tree, Neejon Palm, Hobble Berry and P-lily, which are: surf guitar, trumpet, bassoon, and piano respectively. It reminds me of tucked-away jazz clubs. I spend a ton of my time as Community Manager talking with fans of the game about what they loved in their Mutazione experience. What I hear, constantly and consistently, is how moving the musical gameplay of the gardens is for them. “All the different songs in this were able to perfectly portray exactly what the characters are going through,” one user wrote in a review of the game. Another reports: “The best part of the game was the gardening; it was fun to arrange and grow the different plants and explore the island to find new seeds.” If you’re a player like this, who likes to sit back, relax and take in the ambience of it all, then we made Garden Mode for you. More Mutazione news will be coming over the course of the year. After releasing the game in September, the soundtrack in October, and now Garden Mode, we’re humbled by the response we’ve gotten so far, including the four nominations Mutazione just received from the Independent Games Festival at GDC. If you haven’t picked up Mutazione yet, you can find it for the PS4 at PlayStation Store. We can’t wait to hear what you make of it. View the full article
  5. Hey! We are V1 Interactive, a small studio that is currently developing Disintegration. We’ve been working nonstop for the last few months for this moment to finally arrive: we are super excited to announce Disintegration’s Technical Beta. For those who aren’t familiar with it, Disintegration is a sci-fi FPS in which you pilot a hovering, weaponized vehicle called a gravcycle, while you tactically command your squad around the battlefield. Set on Earth in a not-so-distant future where humanity’s last chance of survival is to replace their bodies with robotic armatures, the single player campaign focuses on Romer Shoal’s story and his fight against the Rayonne to regain his humanity. Although we have been putting a lot of work into the campaign, we’ve also been working hard to ensure Disintegration’s multiplayer is fast, frenetic, and a lot of fun. The multiplayer game pits you against other players in up to 5v5 matches with you and your individual squads on the ground. The unique game modes, blending aerial combat and squad commands across several different modes and maps, are sure to test not only your shooter skills, but also your tactical approach on the battlefield. We let players at Pax West get hands on with the game, but the time has come to put Disintegration’s multiplayer into a real stress test — that’s why we are running our Technical Beta at the end of January. Disintegration’s Technical Beta will include two maps and two different modes. You can also choose between seven different crews each with their own weapons, abilities, and role in combat. We are overwhelmed with all the support and encouraging words we have received so far from the community, but now we need to ask a favor to all of you: join the Technical Beta, coordinate with your team, command your units, and most importantly, have fun! You may see bugs, frame rate issues, or other odd behavior. That’s what we’re looking to resolve. Play it, test it out in every way possible, then give us your honest feedback. Your feedback is key for us to try and make Disintegration the best that it can be. So sign up now to have a chance to participate in the Closed Technical Beta January 28-30. However, don’t worry if you don’t get the chance to join the closed session! You can always play the Open Technical Beta at PlayStation Store, that will run from January 31 to February 1. You can find all the information on Disintegration and details about the Technical Beta at www.disintegrationgame.com. Time to jump onto your gravcycles and reboot humanity! View the full article

  10. For the first time since The Elder Scrolls Online’s launch, Tamriel’s adventurers will be able explore the snow-covered lands of Skyrim once again with the announcement of an all-new Chapter, The Elder Scrolls Online: Greymoor. This new Chapter, coming to PlayStation 4 on June 2, is a major part of the brand-new Dark Heart of Skyrim year-long story that begins with the Harrowstorm dungeon DLC in March and continues throughout the entire year. Greymoor takes you to the region of Western Skyrim. Not only will this new zone allow you to explore the cold wilderness that surrounds the city of Solitude, but it also provides an opportunity to explore the massive underground region of Blackreach. Whatever your experience was with this part of Tamriel during your adventures in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, you’ll find the Western Skyrim of ESO, some 1000 years before the events of TESV, a familiar but different land from the one you’ve explored previously, filled with new quests, delves, world bosses, and more. In this new Chapter, you will take part in a massive year-long story and help the besieged Nords investigate the emergence of horrific supernatural events called harrowstorms. Monstrous vampires and other dark beasts have emerged from the depths below Solitude, and it is up to you to put a stop to these dark events and discover the ancient evil at their heart. This new Chapter also introduces a new system, Antiquities, that allows you to scry and uncover ancient relics from all over the continent. As a would-be archeologist, you shall unearth fantastic new items and collectibles in your quest to discover Tamriel’s hidden history. As part of the Dark Heart of Skyrim year-long adventure, the story you experience in the Greymoor Chapter (and the Harrowstorm DLC before it) will be a part of a major storyline that continues throughout the entirety of 2020. Of course, Greymoor’s storyline is a complete adventure in its own right, and how you choose to play each new release in 2020 is entirely up to you! An ancient evil has awoken beneath the frozen lands of Western Skyrim, and an epic new year-long adventure beckons to Tamriel’s champions. It’s time to face the darkness that now marches forth from Blackreach — Skyrim needs heroes! View the full article
  11. Every Dragon Ball fan has a favorite moment, one that made them cheer at the screen or sit up in anticipation. For some, this moment could be a dizzying combat scene, while for others it may be a dramatic line of dialog. I can certainly recall some exchanges in the Cell saga that gave me goosebumps the first time I heard ’em. We’ve watched — or read! — these moments for many years, and with Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, you’ll be able to play through the Z Warriors’ saga, from the Raditz attack all the way through Majin Buu. We were curious how the game’s development team crammed so many famous sagas into one game (let alone add even more lore, characters and moments), so we reached out to community specialist Sam Wilkinson and lead producer Ryosuke Hara for more info. PlayStation.Blog: Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot encompasses the entire DBZ saga, from the days of Raditz and Vegeta to the ultimate showdown with Majin Buu. That’s a lot of ground to cover! Was there ever a time when the team felt the early sagas would be enough to fill an entire game, or was the goal always to tell the full story? Sam Wilkinson/Ryosuke Hara: That’s a good question, this definitely crossed our minds at one point. However, the initial goal of this project was not only to tell the story of Dragon Ball Z, but to allow the players to experience the journey that Goku and the Z-Warriors shared, becoming stronger and building up their bonds. We felt that this had to be delivered in one package. PSB: We assume Kakarot doesn’t contain literally every moment and line from each saga, so how did the team determine where to trim and where to let moments breathe? SW/RH: Dragon Ball Z is loved all over the world, so of course everyone has their personal favorite scene. This made it difficult to set a specific guideline when deciding which moments to include. However, everyone working on Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot are lifelong fans of Dragon Ball, so we knew the only thing we could do was continue discussing the best way to please as many Dragon Ball fans as possible. PSB: What was the overall process of converting a “saga” into individual RPG-like segments? SW/RH: Aside from the main story, we also focused on how to make the gameplay between the main scenarios interesting. As I mentioned, we are all fans of Dragon Ball, so we asked Akira Toriyama questions that we have been dying to know. We adapted those answers into the game mechanics, such as Sub Stories and conversations with NPCs. PSB: Were there any particular moments from the show that were perhaps not considered “crucial” to the game experience but were too memorable to leave out? SW/RH: There were tons! For example, we tried to shed light on the funny moments that Akira Toriyama is well known for, such as Gohan’s school life during the Buu Arc. There are definitely moments that you wouldn’t see in other Dragon Ball games. PSB: Once you had the moments locked in, were any lines used from the show or was all-new VO recorded? SW/RH: All of the lines were newly recorded by the voice actors for this game. Recently, there haven’t been Dragon Ball games which focused on retelling the anime sagas. So we could tell that the voice actors were feeling a lot of nostalgia, and enjoyed returning to these iconic scenes. PSB: When you’re not screaming into battle against notable villains, Kakarot offers lore-building side-quests with all kinds of NPCs. What kinds of stories did you want to tell with these side missions, and how do they help further flesh out the DBZ world? SW/RH: The Dragon Ball world is full of appealing characters. And although most of those characters have some sort of relationship with Goku, there are many characters that you don’t see interact in the manga or anime. For example, Piccolo and the Ox-King. Sub quests in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will also feature the relationships and talks between these types of characters, as well as introduce new locations in the Dragon Ball world provided by the author himself. PSB: A brand-new character, Bonyu, is introduced via these side-quests. How was this addition to the DBZ roster proposed and then integrated into the game? SW/RH: To be honest, adding this new character in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, was completely unexpected. At an early stage of development, we put together a list of questions we wanted to ask Akira Toriyama. When he answered one of our questions regarding the Ginyu Force, he revealed that this new character, Bonyu, used to be a member of the Ginyu Force. And not only did he provide us with this new lore, he also drew her character design. We then created a sub-quest which revolves around her setting, and her 3D Character Model, based on the illustration provided by the author. PSB: Was there any hesitation regarding adding a new character to these past events? How does Bonyu add to the world of Dragon Ball Z? SW/RH: We had absolutely no hesitation, and that’s simply thanks to the fact that it was the author himself who introduced this new character to us. PSB: Finally, how did Cyberconnect2 like working with the DBZ franchise? They’ve created notable anime fighting games as well as beloved RPGs, and this seems like a great mix of their strengths. SW/RH: Most definitely. We believe that CyberConnect2 has been able to fully utilize their strengths in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. They’ve really succeeded in fusing this game’s presentation style with the Dragon Ball Z art style. I hope everyone pays very close attention to the various facial expressions from the characters in the game during epic battles. Ryosuke Hara and the team at CyberConnect2 were honored to bring the story of Dragon Ball Z to PS4. They have been working passionately to ensure that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot honors and expands on the worldwide-beloved work of Akira Toriyama. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot releases this Friday, January 17. 12. Originally released in 1999, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis expanded the doomed Raccoon City introduced in RE2. The chaotic city captured fans’ imagination, letting them fulfill thrilling zombie outbreak survival fantasies. New storefronts, colorful survivors, and explosive hazards brought the streets to life (despite all the death). The titular Nemesis stalked Jill throughout the city as well, keeping tourists on their toes with every step. The upcoming RE3 remake capitalizes on the exciting expansion of Raccoon City delivered in the 1999 original, boosted by Capcom’s modern enhancements. A new trailer and batch of screens sheds further light on the iconic Nemesis’s reimagined look and the chaotic Raccoon City. The fresh look also offers a few tantalizing tastes of where the remake detours from the original release, with new faces, shops, and more. Nemesis is the star of the new trailer, showcasing his trademark determination and arsenal. His classic rocket launcher returns, but he also boasts a flamethrower this time. Jill should keep her distance from Nemesis at all costs. If his 1999 iteration is any indication – he’s faster than he looks. In the 1999 original, Nemesis could prematurely end Jill’s escape by grabbing her head, lifting her aloft, and unleashing one of his infectious tentacles through his palm. Does that lethal technique return in the RE3 remake? Nemesis gives his hand a rest and lifts Jill into the air with the business end of his rocket launcher. This is objectively a bad situation for Jill Valentine. Speaking of the bio-weapon’s tentacles, this screen shows Nemesis’s whiplike appendages in action. The trailer and screens offer a closer look at the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service (U.B.C.S.). Here we see Tyrell. Will Jill find some shaky ground on which to cooperate with these soldiers representing the insidious Umbrella Corporation? An enemy visually similar to the series’ iconic Hunter enemy prepares to attack U.B.C.S. soldier, Carlos Oliveira. These reptilian monsters traditionally pack a devastating flying leap attack. The enigmatic Dario makes his return in the remake. In the 1999 original, he’s one of the first survivors Jill encounters. Will he have a similar role in the remake? In the mood for seafood and/or donuts? Resident Evil 3 offers glimmers of the destinations Raccoon City once provided its inhabitants. Check out the full gallery here for a look at new character Murphy, Nemesis in action, and more shots of Raccoon City. Resident Evil 3 hits PS4 on April 3, packed with the asymmetrical multiplayer experience Project Resistance. View the full article
  13. Hi everybody, my name is Jonathan Hawkins and I’m the Founder of White Elk and the Creative Director of Eclipse: Edge of Light. Originally showcased as a PS VR demo at PlayStation Experience 2015, the team at White Elk grew to fully bring the game to life as a magical 3+ hour adventure through a strange and foreboding world. Eclipse is a first-person exploration game set on a sentient planet with a dark past. Crash-landing, you awake to find yourself in a dreamscape environment, littered with the remnants of a failed civilization. It’s a world filled with discovery and wonder but shrouded in tragedy and mystery. More Images from Eclipse: Edge of Light The game features many game mechanics that create fun sci-fi exploration — jetpacking through massive canyons, discovering holographic memories, scanning ancient cryptic ruins and throwing a magical artifact to solve puzzles. First released on Daydream in 2017, it went on to receive many nominations and win three mobile VR game of the year awards. We are now very excited to finally bring the game back to PlayStation as both a PS4 and PS VR title with updated graphics. Before founding White Elk, I worked at Sony Santa Monica starting off as an intern and leaving as Lead Level Designer. Over those many years, I helped to create God of War I, II & III with an awesome team that I loved working with. It was always my dream to bring the team back together, so we could continue to create new games for players. With the original Eclipse demo, I started to fulfill that dream. Pitching my good friend and former colleague Cecil Kim on this strange idea for the game, he fell in love. Cecil was the Visual Development Director on God of War, and I loved working with him as he is a visual genius. I knew he could help me realize the vision of the world, with its massive scale and beautiful environments. He art directed the demo and went on to create the full game with his talented team at Section Studios. On God of War 1, I helped to implement the game audio and music. There I learned that half of a game’s experience is audio. So, I reached out to another friend and colleague Mario Lavin who was the Lead Sound Designer on God of War: Ascension. With his help, we brought the world to life, with detailed sound design and technical 3D sound implementation that creates a huge impact on any game, but especially for VR. His audio design helped to establish the mood in the demo and through the rest of the game. Even early on there was a tone that I felt we captured in the PSX demo. A strange eerie feeling, a sense of impending doom but beauty. This feeling was originally inspired by a beautiful track “How We Left Forlandia” by the late composer, Johann Johansson. I collaborated with composer Andrew Prahlow on the music as we were both huge fans of the Johansson’s music and especially of the Fordlandia album. When the game was released in 2017, we both got a chance to see Johannson play a concert on the day the game was originally released. Funny how things work out. Andrew also composed the music for our second game Covert and went on to write the award-winning soundtrack for Outer Wilds, which was released last year on PS4. The final piece of the team-building puzzle was technology. So, I reached out to another God of War alumni, Matt Arrington. He helped to code the original God of War engine from scratch and he brought his amazing talents to single-handedly program Eclipse, by adding new features and expanding the game design pillars. We worked for months to get the feel of the Artifact throw and its many mechanics perfect. Without his help, I would probably still be coding the game today. The path of creating Eclipse was long, challenging, and filled with many setbacks. However, we persevered together. It couldn’t have been made without our fantastic team, partners, and others who worked so hard to bring it to life. We are ecstatic that after all this time, Eclipse has returned to PlayStation and more players will have the chance to experience the magic of this world that we all helped to create. 21. If you are unfamiliar with Spirit of the North you play as an ordinary red fox whose story becomes entwined with the guardian of the Northern Lights, a female spirit fox. As you journey over the mountains and under red-stained skies, you’ll discover more about your companion and land left in ruin. For Spirit of the North we took a mix of Finnish folklore and Icelandic landscapes to create what we believe is a very unique experience for players. The folklore that inspired Spirit of the North is based on the Finnish legend of “Tulikettu.” According to the legend when the “Fire Fox” runs over the snowy hills its tail fur brushes up against stones creating sparks. These embers of light ascend into the skies and form the Northern Lights. The Finnish word for Northern Lights is revontulet which means fox’s fires. Standing stones or Runestones were another big inspiration for the game, we thought they would be great objects to interact with and use as objectives or puzzles. Most historical Runestones or Standing stones are found in Scandinavia which allows them to fit the overall theme of Spirit of the North quite well. The scenery in Spirit of the North was heavily inspired by Icelandic landscapes. Tayler (co-developer) visited Iceland in 2017 and was inspired by the bold landscapes. Black sand, hexagonal basalt pillars, treeless vistas, blue glacier ice, and geothermal pools all made it into the final game design. Spirit of the North took our two-person studio around two and a half years to develop and release. Over that time we held true to our vision and original inspiration. We think Spirit of the North is a world that everyone can relax and enjoy. Spirit of the North is available digitally on PS4. View the full article

We here at Scavengers Studio are really excited to come to PS4 and add you to our growing list of victimstotally-willing Arena combatants come January 14! Have you got what it takes to survive? Gear up, the show’s about to start. Jet Wings Equip these aerodynamic fuel-injected Jet Wings and take to the skies! Master their maneuverability and acrobatic abilities to daze and amaze your opponents, while raining death on them from above with a flurry of arrows! Grapple Gauntlet Like things up close and personal? Then close the gap in the blink of an eye and bring the fight directly to your opponents and give them the chance to meet the business end of your personalized axe, or grab the environment for quick getaways and navigation! Headhunter Drone Are you the type of person who likes to have a companion with you when venturing out in the wilderness? Then be sure not to enter the arena with this helpful little friend, who can gather resources for you as well as tracking your opponents to ensure you’re never taken by surprise! Darwin Project Fun Fact #672: There might not be large monstrous grizzlies roaming the woods of the Arena and stalking Inmates, but if you’re perceptive and look hard enough, you can find their cuddly counterparts hidden in each tile! See you soon in the Arena! View the full article
  23. I’ve always been a huge fan of the racing genre, be it hardcore sims, arcade entries or anything between. That love helped fuel our own debut into the genre, mobile title Mini Drivers, back in 2016. When we considered bringing the game to PS4, we knew a simple port wouldn’t suffice. Instead, we took the original concept and reimagined it for console, taking inspiration from a diverse range of genre heavyweights such as Crash Team Racing and Codemasters’ Formula 1 (a personal favorite). This ensured that our title would be packed with the features players have come to expect: cross-platform multiplayer, crazy yet customizable power-ups, and plenty of accessibility options. A great physics engine. Stunning visuals. And lots of courses, all with dynamic race-disrupting dangers to make every lap different from the last. And so was born Touring Karts. 1. Keeping the multiplayer lobby thriving Making sure there are enough online players to keep multiplayer healthy is always a challenge. Cross-play, coupled with no segregation of VR and non-VR players, proved to be a simple solution… on paper. Of course, the reality is somewhat more complex, and involves building server infrastructure, testing all combinations of platforms and control methods, and so on. Ensuring that all players — regardless of where and how they’re playing — have the same experience was difficult, but ultimately worthwhile. 2. Power-up precision for everyone It was a real challenge to create power-ups that were attractive to use in VR and also engaging and easy to use on any other platform. The hammer, for example, can be moved in any direction in VR, the same when using the touchscreen on a mobile device, or by following the position of your finger or direction on the D-pad of a DualShock 4. The implementation of the bazooka was another challenge, as we decided to use a hybrid approach mixing auto-aim and manual aiming. That way, you could easily regulate the precision for each shot both in VR and outside of VR. 3. Funny how? Battling for pole position can be a serious business. We wanted to alleviate that tension (or ramp it up, if you’re on the receiving end of an attack) with our multiplayer power-ups, which highlight our interest towards the wackier end of multiplayer racing. Sure, hammers and grenade launchers are unorthodox items for the racetrack, but they’re not unfamiliar to gamers in other online arenas. But how about a giant, irate chicken, or a troop of miniature monkeys trained to briefly hypnotize your race rivals? The circuits deserve a special mention, as they have been enriched with tons of dynamic gameplay-disruptive elements (random slopes, new curves with superelevations and final jumps, optional side ramps, etc) many of those fit the culture and location of each place (a big slice of pizza that throws olives in Italy, giant Frankfurt sausage that hits the ground with beer jugs in Germany, etc). And as previously mentioned, you can fuse power-ups. Combine that angry avian with a bazooka and watch it stampede ahead of you, sporting a military cap and laying explosives onto the heads of those unfortunate to be in its path. Switch a bazooka for an ice cube and you’ll replace grenades for ice cubes, a military cap for an eskimo hat. 4. Comfort settings Touring Karts offers multiple camera modes. Arcade Cabinet recreates the oversized sit-down machines that once frequented arcades, and can help players who suffer from motion sickness. You “sit” in the cabinet, with the game screen built-in in front of you. Power-ups still appear in your hands, and are “thrown” into the cabinet screen, ensuring you still enjoy the immersive physicality of a race. Practice makes perfect Touring Karts had a few practice runs before it roared onto PS4, with tests conducted and bugs ironed out as the game took its first Early Access laps last September on PC. Changes weren’t just behind the scenes: we continued to refine tracks, in both gameplay and aesthetics, adding dynamic elevation to further emphasize the ever-changing courses. All in answer to player feedback. As a result, the PS4 release offers the best version of our arcade racer! View the full article
  24. Hey everyone! We are Parallel Circles — a little indie studio from Spain and UK — and we are about to bring our very first game to PS4 on January 14. The last few years and months have been a rollercoaster for us. After working in AAA development for quite some time we decided to take a leap and embark on a more personal adventure. We established our own 2-person indie studio, Parallel Circles, and started working on our dream project: a highly polished platforming game with tight controls and a lot of care put into game-feel, to be played on your own or enjoyed with your friends and family. This is how Flat Heroes came into being and now we are especially proud to finally launch it on PS4. We’ve put a lot of love, passion, and work into this project so we hope you will enjoy it as much as we did creating it. So what is Flat Heroes? Flat Heroes is a game starring a few minimalistic heroes trying to survive wave after wave of ever-changing enemies. It is fast-paced, it is intense, it is chaotic, and it is a lot of fun. Especially if you are sharing a play session with your friends. There will be a lot of shouting, quite some challenge and a lot of things to overcome, you have our word on that. Since this is our tiny studio’s very first game, we tried to include everything we like in games ourselves. If we had to describe our dream game through gameplay we would definitely show you Flat Heroes. It’s also jam-packed with content: different singleplayer and multiplayer modes, over 300 handcrafted levels and many epic boss battles, versus modes, and even infinite levels to prove your skills and add your scores in the leaderboards. We put all our passion for games into this indie gem. Up to this point, it’s been a uniquely thrilling experience to found our very own studio, making a game we are passionate about, showing it to people around the world at events and festivals and getting so much great and constructive feedback. Seeing how people react so positively to something you’ve made has been magical to us so we wanted to bring it to as many players as possible. This is why we’ve decided to bring it to PlayStation and its loving fan base very soon. Finally, and before we forget, we know Flat Heroes is hard to imagine with just words and images of minimalistic cubes jumping around, so we’ve put together a free demo for you to try by yourself or with some friends and see if it’s up your alley! Enjoy the ride with Flat Heroes, try to beat it by yourself if you dare, or share the experience with your friends, family and loved ones and let us know what you think. We would love to start a conversation with you! Thank you so much for making all of this possible. Roger Valldeperas Juan & Lucas Gonzalez Hernanz, Parallel Circles View the full article
  25. Last time we chatted here, it was to let you know that our magical realist adventure game, Kentucky Route Zero, was headed to PlayStation. Today, we are thrilled to share that the game is finally complete, and Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition will be released on PS4 on January 28! If the game is new to you, let us put that trailer in context. Kentucky Route Zero is a game in five acts, which we’ve been developing and publishing episodically for several years. The TV Edition collects all five acts, as well as the free ‘interlude’ games we made between episodes. Together, they tell a sprawling story of unpayable debts, abandoned futures, and the human drive to find community. Over the course of one night, a small group of lonely strangers are drawn together by circumstance and take a surreal journey along Route Zero, the secret highway that runs through the twisty maze of caves and rivers beneath Kentucky. The release of the TV Edition on PS4 coincides with Act V, the conclusion of the story. So if the game is new to you, you’ve come at a great time and can play the whole story from start to finish. Many players, though, have been following this project alongside us for years, and to those players we want to say thank you for your patience and enthusiasm as we found our own disorienting, meandering path through development. The three of us at Cardboard Computer (Jake Elliott, Tamas Kemenczy, and Ben Babbitt) started work on what would become Act I of Kentucky Route Zero around the end of 2010 — almost ten years ago! Our original vision for the project was a non-violent, exploratory platformer. I think the pitch was something like “Castlevania with dialog trees instead of combat, set in Mammoth Cave.” Needless to say, that hasn’t really been an accurate description of the game since the earliest prototypes. It’s been a great privilege for us to have the time and space to take an experimental and exploratory approach to this game, making it into something very personal that also follows our own development as artists over the last decade or so. Kentucky Route Zero- Act V by Ben Babbitt We’ll leave you with some new music by Ben Babbitt from Act V. And whether you have been with us since the beginning or are just joining us now, thank you for playing. – Jake, Tamas & Ben View the full article
