  1. Hi PlayStation gamers. The fright for the future has begun, and for the next three weeks, we’re celebrating the spookiest time of the year in true Overwatch fashion — with a brand new seasonal event! Explore the haunted streets of Hollywood, expand your collection of themed holiday items, and relive a chilling tale firsthand in our first PvE Brawl: Junkenstein’s Revenge! Welcome to the Overwatch Halloween Terror. Trick or TreatStarting today, all in-game Loot Boxes have been replaced with special glowing jack-o-lanterns, and they’re filled to the brim with more than 100 new cosmetic treats! As with our previous events, any Loot Box you earn or purchase from now until the event concludes will contain at least one item from our Halloween 2016 collection — including profile icons, sprays, victory poses, emotes, highlight intros, skins, and more! While the contents of each Halloween Loot Box are random, you can unlock a variety of these creepy customization options with credits in the Hero Gallery throughout the event’s duration. Once you’ve unlocked a Halloween item, it will be yours forever, which means that you can look terror-ific all year round! The collection will be crawling back into the vault on November 1, however, when the event concludes, so be sure to fire up your PS4 and dig in before it’s too late! Double-Double Toil and TroubleDuring the Halloween event, you’ll also be able to participate in Overwatch’s first-ever co-op PvE Brawl: Junkenstein’s Revenge. Team up with three other players and face off against a host of eerie enemies, including Dr. Junkenstein himself, Junkenstein’s Monster, the Reaper, a mysterious witch, and host of shambling zomnics. As told in the “Dr. Junkenstein’s Monster†comic, this terrifying tale follows Dr. Jamison Junkenstein, an inventor and scientist who was once employed by the Lord of Adlersbrunn. Junkenstein’s dream was to create artificial life, but the Lord of Adlersbrunn mocked the scientist and his creations, calling him a fool and dismissing him from service. Slighted, Junkenstein vowed to prove the lord wrong, and when a mysterious witch showed up and offered the key to perfecting his creation, Junkenstein’s Monster was born. Now Junkenstein plans his revenge against the Lord of Adlersbrunn, and only four heroes stand in the way… Players will choose from the Alchemist (Ana), the Archer (Hanzo), the Gunslinger (McCree), or the Soldier (Soldier: 76) and defend Adlersbrunn castle’s doors against Dr. Junkenstein’s onslaught. Heroes will need to work together and develop strategies to withstand wave after wave of zomnic attacks. Will you be able to keep your cool when Junkenstein’s Monster appears? Overwatch Halloween Terror is live right now on PS4 and the event will end on November 1. So jump in and check out the new items, and test your mettle against Junkenstein’s metal minions. The Monster awaits. View the full article
  2. Last year, we invited you to join seven delinquents on their journey to redemption in Criminal Girls: Invite Only. This year the party continues! Criminal Girls 2: Party Favors is available today for your PS Vita at retail and on PlayStation Store, dood! So what’s new this time around? Let’s start with the cast. Last time, you were guiding seven delinquents loosely based on the seven deadly sins. This time, we have a whole new cast of characters, each with a unique backstory to uncover and their own motivations for their sinful ways. You’ll have to keep everyone in line, from Shinoa — the caring honor roll student who might be trying just a bit too hard — to Sui, a sarcastic and analytic mind who’ll make your life difficult if you can’t handle the bite of her words. Criminal Girls 2 continues to build on the battle system of the first game. You won’t find yourself fighting standard RPG battles when your team is full of Delinquents! As you play, you’ll have to choose your action each turn from the suggestions the girls in your party provide, instead of just telling them what you want to do. As you motivate them, they’ll learn new skills and start suggesting more… appropriate actions as they warm up to you and grow in strength. Two brand new features have been added to the battle and character customization system this time around: Coaching and SM Stats. These two systems play off of each other to really customize how your party approaches a battle. As each girl levels up through motivation, they’ll unlock new skills that you can choose for them. Once you enter into a battle, you’ll then be able to coach your team to do their best! Choosing from various responses to their performance, like scolding or praising them, will change their stats! That’s a quick taste of what you’ll get in Criminal Girls 2: Party Favors. You can find out more about the game and check out some trailers on the game’s official website, or if you find yourself sufficiently motivated, go pick up the game today on PlayStation Store, or from your favorite retailer! 4. The following is an excerpt from the upcoming 20 Years of Tomb Raider, the definitive guide to the franchise, digging deep into two decades of Lara Croft’s impact on pop culture. As Lara returns to PS4, we look back at a key moment from the character’s past, as she takes her first steps towards Hollywood… Tomb Raider III: Completing the TrilogyLara’s expansion into the pop-culture consciousness continued to grow in her third year of life. Partnerships established in 1997 came to fruition in 1998 as merchandise requests continued to flood in. “Eidos as a company is very, very protective over Lara so we’re very careful with the merchandise that we choose,†said Janet Swallow, VP of Licensing in GameTap’s Tomb Raider retrospective. “We’ve had two odd requests; one of them was a racehorse owner asking whether he could call his racehorse after Lara, which we declined.†The concern being that the horse may fall at the first hurdle, a risk they didn’t want to take. “And the second one was a tulip grower in Holland,†continued Swallow. “To name one of their brands of tulips after Lara which we thought was quite nice.†She confirms the tulip deal was approved and they were grown in Amsterdam. Some top tier merchandise also made it through approvals, such a series of 9†figures from Playmates that became immediate fan favorites. Each posed Lara within intriguing dioramas, and kicked off a long partnership with the toy company. Other products included a PlayStation memory card with Lara’s torso jutting out from the console, letting her save games with style. She was also partnered up with U.K. sports drink brand Lucozade for a series of action-packed commercials, and starred in one of German band Die Ärzte’s music videos, taking it to the top of the music charts for eight weeks. March of 1998 saw the announcement that Paramount had acquired the worldwide film rights to Tomb Raider. “Tomb Raider is a high-energy, inventive and smart action-adventure project,†said Producers Lawrence Gordon and Lloyd Levin in an official release. “It’s based on the rare video game that is well-suited for film adaptation, not only because of its thematic and visual richness, but also because it’s so strongly character and story oriented.†A pair of striking teaser posters were released long before an actress was cast, asking “Who is Lara Croft?†Following the movie’s 2001 release, there would be few left who couldn’t answer that question… Previews for Tomb Raider III took place again at E3 and ECTS. This time model Nell McAndrew filled Lara’s boots for photoshoots and live appearances. Eidos also choreographed a custom stage presentation where fans could talk directly to Lara and ask her questions; her voice actress Judith Gibbins was squirreled away backstage to answer the queries. McAndrew would proceed to take Tomb Raider on tour for several months, visiting Europe, Australia, and stops all over the United Kingdom. It was at events like these (specifically E3, held in Atlanta at the time) which Producer Troy Horton recalls most fondly. In the “pre-social media days†shows had extra weight and importance. “Those are the kind of moments you realize you are working with a really fantastic team on a really amazing product. You face the customers, see people playing it and hear their feedback directly. You live in a bubble at a studio, especially a small one. Back then there was no social media, email had only come into use a year or two before.†Tomb Raider III sold massively — the best to date at the time of launch, although lifetime sales were eventually overtaken due to re-releases of the original two titles. The studio continued to invest in the future, satiating the desire for yearly Tomb Raider releases while keeping an eye on new technology and opportunities just over the horizon. 20 Years of Tomb Raider, a 360 page hardback recounting Lara Croft’s greatest moments across video games, comics, movies, and pop culture, is out on October 25. Written by Meagan Marie, Senior Community Manager, Crystal Dynamics, it will be available at select retailers. View the full article

Housing Sneak PeekFinished adventuring? Perhaps it’s time to return home and put your feet up, but you’ll need a place to call your own. How about a comfortable country dwelling, or a stately manor you can decorate in your own style, and equip with your own cooking fire, blacksmith station, or alchemy table? You’ll be able to do all of these things and more with ESO’s new Housing system coming early next year. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the Housing system details: You’ll be able to own as many houses as you like, and house ownership is account-wide. With Housing, we’ll also be releasing Furniture Crafting — you will be able to sell the furniture you craft to other players. You will be able to invite friends and guildmates to your home. Houses are instanced, so you don’t have to worry about grabbing the perfect spot of land. Your first home is free, and you will be able to purchase additional houses for gold. Houses are designed in different racial styles, and there are small, medium, and large varieties for each — you can own any house styles and sizes you like regardless of your character’s race. Keep an eye out for more Housing details later this year! Join us for a fantastic fall season in Tamriel with The Elder Scrolls Online’s latest update, events, and sneak previews, all coming in the month of October. And if you’ll be picking up the PS4 Pro this November, don’t forget that you’ll be able to experience ESO in 4K. See you online! View the full article
  6. Call me crazy, but I think Touhou is about to take the Western world by storm, dood! Some of you got a taste with our recent release of Touhou Genso Rondo: Bullet Ballet, but you’ll be able to get a whole lot more when Touhou Genso Wanderer launches on PS4 (physical and digital) and PS Vita (digital only) on February 7! As an added bonus, we’re also going to include a free copy of Touhou Double Focus, a 2D platformer starring Aya, on its own disc in the launch day edition of the game. Yup, that’s right, if you pre-order the game to make sure you get the launch day edition for PS4, not only will you be getting Touhou Genso Wanderer, but you’ll also get Touhou Double Focus, a reversible cover, and a mini-art book! Okay, now let me back up a second. For the uninitiated, a deep dive into the world of Touhou is a wild and crazy ride that could take you weeks to emerge from, but you can get a quick primer in my last Touhou related post. Up to speed? Okay, good because Touhou Genso Wanderer takes the bullet-hell world of the Touhou Project in a new direction as it wraps Reimu and her pals in the trappings of a roguelike RPG. If you’re anything like me, I’m sure you’re licking your lips at the thought of challenging random dungeons, enemies, and traps in search of the best loot in Gensokyo. You’ll want to temper that enthusiasm with a touch of patience and strategy though, because despite its charming outer skin and fun story, Touhou Genso Wanderer is a roguelike worthy of the name. While setting out into randomly generated dungeons on your quest to resolve the latest incident in Gensokyo, you’ll need to take care — dying in the dungeon will result in not only the shame of death, but also the loss of all the items you’re carrying. Of course, that’s not always a bad thing, as losing your favorite weapon could just make you experiment with one of the hundreds of other unique items in Gensokyo, or force you to spend a little time crafting a new favorite in the item fusion system. The item fusion system lets you make use of the myriad items that you’ll pick up in your quests into the dungeons of Gensokyo, instead of just trashing them all. You’ll also be taking a pal into the dungeon for each adventure. With six partner characters to choose from, I’m sure you’ll be able to find a favorite no matter what your playstyle is! To find out more about all the systems in Touhou Genso Wanderer, visit the game’s official website, and don’t forget to pre-order the launch edition if you want to snag a free bonus copy of Touhou Double Focus! Alrighty, now I’m off to get to the bottom of this latest incident before the rest of you get a chance to on February 7. Catch you in the comments, dood! View the full article
  7. Hi, I’m Tom Heaton from Supermassive Games and I’m the Game Director of Tumble VR for PlayStation VR. The original Tumble was one of the first games we developed and it’s great to bring the latest instalment to VR. As before, you’ll be solving puzzles, building towers, and manipulating items. However, this time you play in a high-tech virtual world, complete with a robot drone who is out to test the intelligence levels of humanity. He has some disparaging things to say about us as a race, so can you prove him wrong? In this virtual world, you use the motion tracking capabilities of the DualShock 4 to solve problems set by the drone. Picking up and manipulating objects in VR feels incredibly lifelike and natural. You can twist, turn, throw, or place objects with pinpoint accuracy. It’s precise, smooth, and satisfying. There are more than 80 single-player levels. Some are recognizable from the PS3 version, some are brand new. They range from deceptively simple to brutally difficult, but if you get stuck there’s always something else to move on to. There’s also a brand new multiplayer mode too, with a second player able to take on the role of the drone. No headset required: you simply grab a DualShock 4 and play along via the TV. You can fire laser beams, place wind turbines, and generally do your best to disrupt the building attempts of your headset-wearing opponent! The design team has come up with a huge variety of puzzles. There are some that require balancing and others where you have to fit geometric blocks together. Other puzzles see you bending light beams around a maze, building giant towers, constructing bridges, and blowing things up. There are also levels where you have to build in a wind tunnel and even some where an earthquake goes off every fifteen seconds. The drone also makes things difficult by giving you crazy building blocks. Some are simply difficult shapes, but others are made of unhelpful materials like glass. Some even stick together or have gravity in very unusual directions. This variety makes sure that the player has always got something new and interesting to do. On top of all that, many levels feature bonus puzzles. These include special blocks hidden throughout the game which you’ll need to complete the game’s final level. The team had great fun making Tumble VR. We can’t wait to see you playing it. Top 10 Tips for Tumble VR The weight and friction of blocks is shown on the DualShock 4 when you pick them up. Think about how to use these properties and use heavy blocks to weigh other blocks down. Some awkward-shaped blocks fit together to make a combination that is much more useful. In destruction levels, it’s important to get blocks into the high-scoring zones. Look for weak points that will make the tower topple sideways. Look out for jigsaw blocks within levels — they can earn you an easy medal. If you get stuck on a particular level, look around for other easier medals in the zone. Many levels have an additional bonus level, too! Hidden blocks are essential for completing the final level and are found in levels all over the game. They can be above you, behind you, beneath you, or hidden behind things. If you are the VR player in Versus mode, going for the bonus points on offer is often the best way to victory. In Versus mode, the blaster power-up is very powerful, especially if you hit the blocks at the top of the VR player’s tower. Listen carefully to what the drone says at the start of each level. Sometimes it gives little clues about how to tackle the puzzle. Experiment and have fun. Many puzzles don’t have set solutions. It’s all about trying your own thing and seeing what works. 9. It’s been seven years in the making. Thumper is rhythm violence and available today as a digital download on PlayStation Store. Thumper’s entire campaign — all nine epic levels — are playable in both psychedelic 1080p on PS4 and dangerously immersive VR on PS VR. Thumper uses just one analog stick and one button, so it’s simple to pick up and play. But it’s challenging to master — even the best action gamers will spend hours surviving the advanced levels and defeating the terrifying bosses. We’ve also added expert-level moves you’ll need to master to reach high scores and unlock lucrative Trophies (including a Platinum). Playing in traditional HD is perfect for long play sessions as you lock into the rhythm and perfect your skills. Thumper’s visuals scale up beautifully on large screen displays and the thunderous soundtrack will put the biggest subwoofers to the test! On PS VR, you’ll scream through Thumper with an overwhelming sense of speed and physicality. The brutal action gameplay is particularly well suited to the high frame-rate and beautiful OLED display. We think it’s unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. You can check it out on the PS VR demo disc included with every PS VR sold in North America! Last but not least, we’re excited to announce Thumper will support PS4 Pro from day one. We’ve worked hard to perfect Thumper’s graphics tech and the extra power lets us push our original vision even further. On PS4 Pro, Thumper will render at up to 4K resolution (With no upscaling!) for the ultimate high-gloss HD experience. PS4 Pro also enhances the VR rendering quality while maintaining the same rock-solid 90 frames-per-second. We’ll have more details on our PS4 Pro support soon! Thumper is available today in PlayStation Store for $19.99. See you in rhythm hell! View the full article

  12. At Guerrilla, we are gamers first, and when creating games we always look for something that we would like to play ourselves. When we started development on Rigs Mechanized Combat League, it was always our intention to create an experience that harkened back to the old school arena based shooters. Those days when you would learn the arena by heart, and when a well-timed jump or a split second dodge gained you the advantage over your opponents. We wanted to create that adrenaline pumping fast paced shooter, and put you in the middle of the action. We looked at motorsports and even mixed martial arts for inspiration. This created the perfect blend for Rigs — it has the fast paced action of motorsports while maintaining the close-quarters combat of MMA. When designing the actual Rigs that the player will be controlling, we looked at how we could combine motorsport with MMA. It was really important that we distinguished the rigs as high-end sporting vehicles rather than lumbering war machines. This evolution started out with smaller Rigs that looked more like motorsport but on legs, but as we started to conceptualize it a bit more you can see our starting point and ending with the Mirage class. With PlayStation VR we have been able to create an experience that truly immerses you in the game world. It really does feels like you are controlling one of the 20+ refined sports Rigs and maneuvering through purpose-built arenas around the globe, taking down your opponents. Keep an eye on our Twitter and Facebook page for the latest on Rigs Mechanized Combat League as well as where you can go hands on, because playing is believing. Rigs Mechanized Combat League will launch October 13 and you can pre-order from select retailers. View the full article
  13. Hello, my name is Kuroki, Director at oneoreight Studios. We’re a game development studio established in April of 2012 and based in Tokyo, Japan. Our motto: “To make interesting games that we believe in.†That may seem like a very broad mission statement, but it’s important for us that we make games that we enjoy playing. And playing a hero soldier fighting for the survival of Earth is something we think is extremely appealing with our first game on PS4, Earth’s Dawn. The first thing players will notice in our game is the unique, 2D art style. The game takes place in the future when alien invaders known as the E.B.E. have destroyed much of Earth. So we needed the setting to be dark and threatening. This is reflected not only in the game’s atmosphere, but also the look of soldiers, the deadly looking weapons, and of course, the enemies. The gameplay in Earth’s Dawn is fast paced — a mix of shooting and melee attacks so players must learn how make use of gun, sword, and advanced attacks to string together combos. When you add dashing in between your attacks, then you’ll notice the game’s addictive nature. In some battles, players will have their combat skills graded. The more varied and exciting their combat approach, the higher the grade and reward. It’s fun starting with a few slash attacks, knocking the enemy up in the air, jumping into the air with more melee attacks, juggling them in the air with gunshots, and then maybe throw them in-midair to finish a combo. Our dev team is often competing to see who can get the highest number of hits in a combo as we are very competitive! I’m also very proud of the amount of customization we give the player for both weapons and abilities. As you defeat enemies, you’ll get materials to create new weapons and equipment. When crafting your gear, you can substitute in higher value versions of the components to raise the base stats on an item. If you really enjoy using a particular weapon, you can also sacrifice more resources in order to level it up, making it even more powerful! We focus on the small details, so we hope you appreciate that the gear you create is reflected on the character in game, such as the flames blazing out of axes as well as the various masks we created. The skill system is something we worked to fit the theme of the game and to have a lot of depth. The hero is part of an elite fighting force that is using alien E.B.E. technology implanted into their bodies to give them superhuman abilities. As you level up in the game, you learn different skills that will improve your abilities in offense, defense, speed, endurance, and more. As you unlock these, you will also be able to “link†skills together to create new ones! There are more than 100 different skills to customize, so choose wisely how to make your hero! We hope you enjoy Earth’s Dawn, our very first game coming out November 1 — we’re also very excited to see PS4 box versions in retail stores on the same day! View the full article
  14. PlayStation VR will launch worldwide on October 13 with an incredible amount of titles not only at launch, but releasing throughout this holiday season. There will be more than 25 titles launching with PS VR this month, including heavy hitters like Batman: Arkham VR from Rocksteady Studios, PlayStation VR Worlds from our own Worldwide Studios, and Rigs Mechanized Combat League from Guerrilla Games. Among the holiday lineup is one of the most incredible gaming experiences ever conceived — the opportunity to battle against the evil Empire in an X-wing fighter in VR. Thanks to the talented teams at Dice, Criterion and Lucasfilm, Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-wing VR Mission will give PS VR owners a chance to experience something we’ve all dreamed about. This experience will be free for all PS4 owners of last year’s fan-favorite shooter Star Wars Battlefront when it launches on PS VR this holiday. An iconic experience like this is worth bragging about, so I’d like to give you a preview of our new TV spot — one of several in the works — that celebrates the launch of PlayStation VR in style. PlayStation VR has to be tried to be believed, but we know how it feels to be transported into our favorite gaming experiences and we think this captures that emotion perfectly. If you can’t wait until October 13 to experience PlayStation VR, many local retailers are offering hands-on demos of experiences such as Batman: Arkham VR, Harmonix Music VR or Thumper now. Let us know what you think of our new spot! View the full article
  15. Hello future pilots. It’s just over a week until the launch of Eve: Valkyrie on PlayStation VR. The studio here at CCP Newcastle is buzzing, even the Autumn weather can’t dampen our excitement. Just a few short days from now and our game will be out there in the hands of brand new PlayStation VR owners. Ships will be chosen, squadrons formed, missions flown, alliances made and broken. The Eve: Valkyrie community is standing by to introduce all you new recruits to the things that make Eve: Valkyrie special: the terror of deep space, the glory of flight, and the joy of a hard-won kill. So what better way to mark the occasion than a Double XP Weekend? From October 14 through October 17, Valkyrie pilots will receive Double XP from every mission they fly. And that’s Double XP for everyone, including our veteran PC players — Eve: Valkyrie is the first ever virtual reality game with full cross-platform play between PC and PS4. Of course, our PC players don’t get the exclusive PlayStation VR content we announced last week, so they might be in a vengeful mood… be careful out there. If you’d like to know more about the game, or meet our team of VR developers, head to evevalkyrie.com and join the conversation on our forums, or follow Eve: Valkyrie on Twitter. See you in the next life. View the full article
  16. As the actual, highly anticipated release of The Last Guardian finally nears (Yes, it’s a real game and you’re a mere few weeks away from playing it!), we’re hearing more and more from the community about how designer Fumito Ueda’s work has touched them. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus seem to hold a special place in the hearts of their fans, though the reasons why vary depending on who you talk to. We thought it a fitting nod to a decade-long wait near its end to celebrate the legacy that precedes The Last Guardian, as shared in thoughts and memories from people in the industry (AKA gamers, like you). It’s also a nifty excuse for us to formally release this tribute video that Tokyo Game Show goers saw last month: What do Ico and Shadow of the Colossus mean to you? Do you have a favorite memory from your time with either game? Please share in the comments! “Ico was the first videogame ever for me to care about an AI character, Yorda. There were no conversations that I could understand between the characters, just the behavior of Yorda in relation to what I did, or the situation presented, that made me feel like Yorda was a living person — thinking and feeling as an individual. This made playing through Ico a very special experience — like I lived through the adventure with her. “I believe, as a fan of Ueda-san’s games, that people feel like his work is special because you clearly feel the game was — from beginning to end — a singular vision, without any influence of popular genres or styles at the time.†– Shuhei Yoshida (President of SIE Worldwide Studios) “Team Ico creates timeless masterpieces that remind me of a long-loved picture book or a fairytale. I’m especially a big fan of their fantastic animations. “We at Team Ninja have also put great effort into creating smooth action for a long time. I feel real and warm emotion from Ueda-san’s sophisticated animations.†-Fumihiko Yasuda (Director, Team Ninja) “When I played Ico for the first time I was struck by how well it conveyed scale and solitude. The game truly makes you feel like you’re left to your own devices in a huge and uncaring world — there are no armies coming to your aid, no inns to seek refuge in between chapters. It’s just you and Yorda, a girl you know nothing about and whose language you don’t speak, trying to escape from a vast and ancient castle. “That atmosphere of desolation makes certain forms of interaction all the more meaningful. My favorite thing in Ico is the way in which you save your game: you sit down on a bench together with Yorda and take a breather from all the jumping and climbing. It’s such a touching little moment, allowing you to reflect on everything the two of you have been through and strengthening your bond. “In Shadow of the Colossus, the sense that you’re facing down impossible odds is even stronger due to the ever-looming presence of the colossi. The first time I scaled and took down a colossus was a moment of pure exhilaration; I’d never faced a creature so much larger than myself in a videogame, let alone defeated one. It’s one of those defining moments in games, and I think it’s fair to say that the confrontations between Aloy and the machines in Horizon Zero Dawn owe a huge debt to Shadow of the Colossus. “I think Ueda-san’s games tell bittersweet, human stories that tap into universally relatable emotions. They’re minimalist works of art, executed with laser-like focus throughout — from the core game mechanics to the storyline. Coupled with the craftsmanship evident in the visuals, the animations and the music, it’s easy to see why they’re timeless classics.†-Hermen Hulst (Managing Director, Guerrilla Games) “What I love the most about Team Ico’s games is their very unique sense of storytelling and poetry. They tell unique stories without any dialogue and still the player gets a very clear sense of the story, who these characters are, and easily gets emotionally attached to them. “The little boy with horns in Ico is a very good example of an intriguing character created through very simple means. Ueda-san’s sense of storytelling is elegant and subtle, it talks directly to the heart of players, which is difficult to do. His sense of poetry is something few games manage to offer. “I have many favorite moments in Team Ico’s games. I love both games’ ends in particular (I don’t want to spoil them). I remember standing in front of my TV absolutely amazed by these endings, so clever, moving, surprising, and at the same time so spot on. But both games are full of these incredible moments, from the discovery of your horse to this incredible feeling of climbing on the shoulders of a giant. These games are about being a child again, and that’s really a miracle by itself. “Very few creators have such an ability that makes everything they touch distinctive and special. Ueda-san is definitely one of them. His work has been seminal in many ways, and is still today a source of inspiration.†-David Cage (Director, Quantic Dream) “I can’t wait to be sat on my couch, lights down, sound up, and this game starting up on my screen. Ico is in my top game experiences — so gentle and yet unforgiving, so beautiful and yet bleak! I absolutely love the fantasies they created and I am looking forward to seeing what metaphors/emotions this rite of passage story explores. It’s so hard to get that stuff right. Basically looking forward to everything. “Team Ico has brought us incredibly beautiful rites of passage experiences and for that I am very grateful. I’m happy that some of them have stayed together to bring us The Last Guardian and with Ueda-san at the helm I am sure that we are in for a massive treat! I know that Day One I shall be on my couch escaping the real world and immersing myself in theirs. I can only imagine the team’s own feelings getting this out after all the time and effort that they have put in, and so I wish them the very, very best and hope that they have a big celebration.†-Siobhan Reddy (Director, Media Molecule) “Years after first playing it, the emotional impact of Ico tugging at Yorda’s arm still resonates with me. The hand-holding mechanic appears deceptively simple but was clearly constructed and with intense care and attention to detail. Through interactivity a deep bond is created between the two characters in a way that is wholly unique to games. It is one of many visionary choices that make Ico a classic and a master class in elegant storytelling and design.†-Neil Druckman (Naughty Dog) View the full article
  17. Hello Humans! IT’S ALMOST TIME TO JOB! Job Simulator is launching day-one on PlayStation VR! This means that the same day you get your meaty hands on your brand spankin’ new HMD, you’ll be able to use your virtual hands to cause unending mischief in Job Simulator. We’re so excited to be launching on PS VR. We’ve spent a ton of time working to make a fantastic living room experience, making sure the game is super smooth, accurate, and squeezes every ounce of performance from the hardware. This included spending an inordinate amount of time focusing on getting your hands in VR feeling “right.†Whenever people get into VR, one of the very first things they do is look at their hands — hands are so intrinsically important to the person in VR. They’re everyone’s natural and primary method of interacting with the real world. At Owlchemy, we fundamentally believe that one of the most important tenets of VR are hands that can naturally manipulate anything. When a player can seamlessly use their hands to accurately throw, grab, twist, smack, and generally cause mayhem, it’s a thing of beauty, and some really amazing physics-based shenanigans are possible. Juggling? Go for it! Balancing eight pieces of bread on top of each other and then toppling your bread-tower by tossing a half-eaten tomato? Go nuts. With 6-degrees-of-freedom hand interactions and accurate physics, almost anything is possible. We can’t wait to see what players will come up with! In order to pull off smooth hand interactions, we worked extremely hard to consistently hit 90 frames per second throughout the entire game. This required a lot of optimization, testing, and re-optimization, but the result is an experience that allows for chugging coffee with one hand while typing on a binary keyboard with the other, all with relative ease (If, of course, you can pull that off in real life!). So be sure to pick up two PlayStation Move Motion Controllers and try it for yourself– you’ll need those to have full control of your hands in order to toss tires, fling fruit, and throw a stapler at your boss. Also, we’re super thrilled to be included on the PlayStation VR Demo Disc! Our short office demo will let everyone get a small taste of all the chaos, jokes, and oversized hotdogs included in the full version of Job Simulator. Once you’ve been sufficiently sold on the automated robotic future that is Job Simulator, simply eat the “Buy!†Donut at the end of the demo to be taken directly to the store page! PREPARE. TO. JOB. 18. In July, we announced a release date for Gravity Rush 2 that we felt most appropriate for the title. Since then, though production is proceeding smoothly, the landscape for that release date has changed dramatically. Gravity Rush 2 is the conclusion of Kat’s journey, so we want players to have enough time to dive deep into her story. In addition, as a lot of work went into online features that allow for asynchronous player interaction, we want as many people as possible playing the title at the same time. Thus, after careful deliberation, we have decided to change the release date. Gravity Rush 2 will now launch on January 20, 2017. I would like to apologize to all those players anxiously awaiting Gravity Rush 2. After four years of development making a title we are very proud of, we want to release it at the very best time. In exchange for the longer wait, we have decided to release the premium DLC planned for the title free of charge. This additional story will take place in the world of Gravity Rush 2 and we think fans will have a lot of fun playing through it. As we move into the holiday season and the New Year, we have many more exciting things in store, including more information about the title and the special animated feature. Please keep an eye out for more on Gravity Rush 2, and thank you again for all your support. View the full article
  19. The PlayStation.Blog team can’t wait for October 13. With the launch of PlayStation VR in North America, we’re entering a new era of gaming — one that places players directly into the worlds that developers so lovingly create. To prepare for this amazing next chapter in PlayStation history, we all donned that PlayStation VR headset and sampled a bevy of upcoming PlayStation VR titles. This time around we’re getting lost in the absolute visual magic that is Harmonix Music VR. What first appears as a straightforward collection of visualizers and painting experiences transforms into an enthralling journey through light and sound. Read on for our impressions! Harmonix Music VR is an eye-opener to the creative possibilities of virtual reality. I didn’t know much about it going in — it’s some kind of VR music visualizer, right? Well, sort of. We’ve seen four different modes to date for this one, a music visualizer (aptly titled “The Tripâ€) being one of them, but the real standout here is “The Easel,†a mode that turns PlayStation Move controllers into a paintbrush and palette, equipping players with tools to create a living universe that pulses with and reacts to the music. Despite my complete lack of artistic ability, I had an incredible time tracing random lines and shapes in 3D space and watching my musical universe come to life around me. –Justin Massongill Brevity is the soul of wit. Less is more. Keep it simple. These adages echoed in my head as I lost myself in Harmonix Music VR, one of the most palpable expressions of virtual reality I’ve experienced to date. It’s impossible to describe how magical it is to paint a line of pulsing color in the air and step around it, seeing it sizzle and pop inches before your nose — like something truly alive. Harmonix Music VR is the perfect way to introduce someone to the medium, and that in itself is a triumph. –Ryan Clements This one caught me by surprise. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but Harmonix Music VR ended up being one of my favorite PS VR launch experiences. Like Justin, I was particularly enthralled by the “The Easel,†a mind-bending demonstration of PS VR’s power to transform in-game interactions. Painting light and color in a truly 3D, 360 degree space is nothing short of revelatory. Don’t miss this one — it’s a stunner. –Sid Shuman View the full article

  21. The afterlife is many things, but peaceful is not one of them. Heaven and Hell are bent on consuming your soul, and that of all mortals. Death, the Grim Reaper, is struggling to overcome his dark nature to rescue both his world, and ours. Will you join Death and the Court of the Dead to fight for your afterlife? In Underworld Rising, you join a faction and travel the Underworld, building an army of collectible followers. Journey on epic quests, defeat other-worldly enemies, and challenge other players to combat in order to grow your legend and play your part in the Underworld’s bid to Rise, Conquer, Rule! Life As a MournerAt its core, Court of the Dead: Underworld Rising is a game about discovering the world around you while growing your legend and power. There are three factions in the Underworld, each with their own unique design and abilities. Not only will players have the opportunity to choose their faction, but they will also have the chance to infinitely customize the unique look of their character. These choices will include gender (male, female, and gender-neutral) and countless accessories — body modifications, wearables, weapons, and spell effects. Players will also have the opportunity to interact with Underworld NPCs in a way not often seen in 2D games. Relationships can be forged; every action you make could have consequences. Steal from a shopkeeper? Watch out for a bounty on your head. Want to take a headless NPC out on a date? Maybe skip going for tea. As you journey through the Underworld, you’ll have the opportunity to recruit followers whose unique abilities will aide in your quests and combat. Fight For Your AfterlifeCombat in Underworld Rising is played out turn-by-turn on a grid, and depending on where you encounter your enemy, the grid structure will be different. Adding another layer of depth is the opportunity to make use of environmental obstacles during combat. Should you wish to hide behind a tree, you may do so. Should you wish to burn that tree to the ground and envelop your enemy in flame, that’s your prerogative. Grow Your LegendAs you make your way through the Underworld, we didn’t want it to feel as if it were only you who was out on these quests. Players will have the chance to meet with and engage in honorable combat against other players in dynamic PVP battles. As the player base within Underworld Rising grows, we plan to introduce tournaments that give players the chance to win powerful new artifacts and accessories. Be Among the FirstSideshow is known worldwide for our museum-quality, fine art, pop-culture collectibles. Underworld Rising is set in the world of our original property, Court of the Dead. Our licensee, Arcade Distillery, a NYC-based development studio of video game industry veterans, is developing Underworld Rising. Stop by Sideshow’s booth #1946 at New York Comic Con from October 6-9 to be among the first to play a demo of Underworld Rising! View the full article

  24. Archiact is proud to announce that Waddle Home is coming to Playstation VR! What’s new? Intuitive controls through head and controller tracking, greater accessibility, and more VR interactions than ever before! Waddle Home began as a prototype exploring Lemmings-style gameplay for mobile VR. The goal was to create a polished puzzle experience that took advantage of the 360-degree, immersive nature of virtual reality. We threw in penguins, composed an adorably melodic soundtrack, and brought together a visually-astounding game. We’ve made a ton of enhancements to make this game an incredible, must-try VR experience. One of the biggest changes that we’ve made since the original build is the incorporation of head and controller tracking. With VR head tracking, the levels in Waddle Home feel like a doll house in front of the player. They entice you to get up close, to move around, and investigate. We redesigned many levels to take advantage of this — hiding secret tunnels and building areas that you have to peer into in order to conquer the puzzle. These changes in level design help to make the game feel custom-built for virtual reality, and encourage newcomers to VR to take advantage of the 360-degree perspective that VR offers. The addition of controller tracking also allowed us to change the mechanics of the game. “Bopping†the penguins to speed them up, or bopping switches to toggle them, became important gameplay mechanics. We also added custom animations for objects when struck by the controllers. The shift from touch input to controller input allows for a more immersive, full-body experience. We also wanted to make the game inclusive, in terms of both general gameplay and control schemes. During testing, we recognized that different players had fun interacting with the game in different ways. So, with that in mind, we support both a physical “bopping†interactivity, where the player can reach out and hit elements in the game, and a laser pointer control scheme, where they can quickly point and interact with puzzle features. We also worked to make both control schemes work on both the DualShock and Move controller, and it was fun adding a xylophone-style mallet to the DualShock to let people bop away! Of course, we wanted players of all ages to be able to experience Waddle Home. To do this, we made the game platform to be height-adjustable, and as such, a comfortable playing experience both for children and adults. When we showed off Waddle Home with head and controller tracking for the first time, everyone wanted the world to respond to their touch. People tried splashing the water, patting the penguins, and bashing the spaceship. Our testing phase helped us to realize that the moments where players discover ways to interact with their environment have the potential to make VR experiences much more impactful (especially during the first few minutes acclimating to their new world). As such, we dedicated effort into creating fun interactions in the environment that could help players ease into the world. Experiences such as freezing the headset, hitting the spaceships, and splashing around or tracing shapes in the water also help to break up some of the challenging puzzles. We hope that you enjoy the game that we’ve built for you. Now grab your headset, and help those penguins waddle back home! P.S. Let us know if you have any ideas about what you’d like to see added in the next update of Waddle Home! View the full article
  25. I’ve heard more than a few people despair about the fact that the Danganronpa games have only been on the handheld market. I was talking about that with my coworker a little while back — about how sad it was that PS4 owners were missing out on some of the quirkiest characters and greatest storytelling of our time — and then he had an idea. What if we talked with developer Spike Chunsoft and they brought Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair to PS4? Well, guess what? That’s exactly what’s happening in early 2017 with Danganronpa 1&2 Reload, dood! You read that right. Monokuma’s making his mark on PS4 in early 2017 in North America and Europe. All of you awesome PS4 owners will finally be able to enjoy the maniacal machinations of this murderous bear in the comfort of your own home. This endeavor on the PS4 will mark the first time Danganronpa has been on home consoles in North America and Europe, and we’re really excited to see everyone’s reaction! If you’re not familiar with the franchise, I’d recommend doing a quick search to see why Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair have been called “must-own†PS Vita games by journalists and fans alike. Is there more to come? We’ll see! Puhuhuhu… View the full article
