If, like me, you grew up in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s it’s likely that Ron Gilbert is responsible for many of your formative gaming experiences. While at LucasArts he was responsible for a red-hot run of bona fide adventure game classics, including Maniac Mansion, Zak McKraken and the beloved Monkey Island series. In January, he returns to the fray with The Cave, a delightful Sega-published 2D romp that, in true Maniac Mansion tradition, sees you picking three characters from a wildly diverse line-up of seven oddballs and descending into the titular caverns for all manner of puzzle-centric adventure. From the brief section we’ve played, it’s clear that Gilbert has lost none of his flair for fiendish puzzle design, barmy dialogue and madcap storytelling. It’s shaping up to be a charming, challenging and wonderfully eccentric title that will both delight his core fans while being accessible enough to win plenty of new ones. More...

As some of you know, the fine folks at Sony Santa Monica Studio recently opened their doors to members of the gaming press -- the first such "open house" event in the studio's history. In addition to experiencing hands-on time with the upcoming multiplayer beta for God of War: Ascension and two new characters coming to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, journalists experienced a rare inside look at one of the most accomplished and diverse game production facilities in the world. This is a place where developers of indie titles such as The Unfinished Swan and Journey and big-budget blockbusters such as God of War and Starhawk proudly work shoulder-to-shoulder. December sees yet another awesome addition to LittleBigPlanet 2 -- the Cross-Controller Pack -- making LittleBigPlanet 2 the first game to support this exciting new feature! But what is Cross-Controller? Well, Cross-Controller lets you to use PS Vita as a controller for PlayStation 3, allowing the use of PS Vita-only features, like front and rear touch, in PlayStation 3 games. More importantly, it provides a whole second screen where action can take place! This allows for an unimaginable number of new ways to play, some of which you’ll experience with the LittleBigPlanet 2 Cross-Controller Pack! In the LittleBigPlanet 2: Cross-Controller Pack, Sackboy joins up with a group of lovable Space Pirates as they race to find a valuable treasure long thought lost to the Cosmos. More...

By now, we’re all familiar with the long, twisted story of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. First announced in 2009 as “Metal Gear Solid: Rising,†its production was ultimately handed over to Platinum Games, the studio behind legendary action epics such as Bayonetta and Vanquish. Recently we attended the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Boot Camp, where members of the press were able to go hands-on with a nearly complete version of the final game. I won’t talk much about the story, but it’s worth noting that a several years have passed since MGS4, the Patriots no longer exist, cyborg technology is within reach of all who can pay for it, and Raiden belongs to a corporation protecting a very “important†someone in Africa. To help you prepare we’ve raided our archives for a video called ‘The Introduction’. This 20-minute prologue video highlights the action in the days before the story in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas begins. The Introduction is told from various characters' viewpoints, which are intertwined together to reveal the network of organized crime forces operating throughout the state of San Andreas. More...

Fighting with the strength of many men, The Black Knight must battle through a dark and unusual fairy tale world to rid it of an unexpected evil. Black Knight Sword is an unusual game for unusual gamers. The idea is to send ourselves back to the 90’s, lock the door, forget the outer world and enjoy the pure gameplay. This traditional side-scrolling action game will provide us with uncountable trials, failures and the joy of beating the unbeatable. It is not hard to lay back on the couch and get lost in the world of the Black Knight. Suda51 and Grasshopper Manufacture did a lot with the look and feel of the game. If you still want more, turn up the speakers and be enchanted by Akira Yamaoka’s composing and sound design. Not many contemporary titles have such a unique world like Black Knight Sword. More...

Hello! My name is Jack Lang, Junior Programmer at FuturLab. I’m responsible for the programming on our new game, Surge, and I’m here today to talk briefly about how the PlayStation Mobile SDK has made the process of developing our game for PS Vita really easy! I started out as a Flash developer because I wanted to make games. This experience, along with some prior knowledge of C#, meant that I was able to use the PSM cross-platform SDK to focus on the game rather than the specifics of each platform it supports. As you can see from the trailer above, Surge uses nice visual effects, and thanks to PSM I was able to pick and choose between high and low level programming libraries, making it possible to get visual features like the ‘awesomizer’ line style, particles and the attractive color blurring glow effects running efficiently and in a short space of time. Your ship is equipped with a drill that lets you smash through planets and meteors. It’s less about memorisation and more about reactions and adapting! More...

The mercenary life is grand, but how do you put the "profit" into intergalactic warfare for fun and profit? I mean, we all love to see new places (and blow them up) and meet new people (and blow them up), but you're not just doing this for your health. So let's talk about how DUST 514 rewards your effort. There are three things you can come away with from a battle: money, skill points, and salvage, and here's how you get them: Money ISK is the primary currency in the EVE Universe and a necessity for fighting wars. You will earn ISK from each battle you fight. The size of the reward depends on your contribution and the cost of the battle. Those who contribute more are rewarded handsomely, but all mercs are guaranteed a solid income. More...

Playmakers looks into the latest innovations for creating and learning. Some time ago they paid a visit to Media Molecule to take a look into how LittleBigPlanet is leading the way in community development and community game design. Take a look at this video from their visit and you’ll be able to hear some of the Molecule’s very own insights on just how LittleBigPlanet is a new and exciting learning tool that has helped develop a community full of game designers and reviewers. To read more about Playmakers and their visit to Media Molecule, take a trip over to the Playmakers website. I know, I know, I'm running behind this week. That said, there is a pretty good reason why. Sadly, there's no BioShock Infinite coverage on today's show -- you'll just have to make do with special guest Adam Sessler! The Sess is a household name among gamers nationwide thanks to his long run with G4, and now he's got a new project that he's dying to tell you all about. Then we catch up with Sony Santa Monica Studio's Todd Papy, game director on God of War: Ascension for an inside look at the game's long-gestating multiplayer mode.
