1. The previous two seasons of PlayStation Network’s original reality show The Tester offered the winner the chance to work among Sony’s brightest minds as a game tester at Sony Computer Entertainment America. As you’ve probably heard, for season 3, the ultimate prize is truly the chance of a lifetime: the winner of The Tester 3 will become a production associate at Sony’s world-famous Santa Monica Studio. We thought you might like to take a peek behind the scenes of this state-of-the-art studio to meet some of the talented folks involved in the biggest titles on the platform: Shannon Studstill (senior director), Stig Asmussen (director of God of War III), Todd Papy (design director), Whitney Wade (senior producer), and Deborah Mars (executive producer). You might remember Deborah and Stig appeared as guest panelists in season 2 of The Tester. Check out this exclusive inside look at Santa Monica Studio (above). More...
2. The wait is almost over, Jak and Daxter fans! I’m happy to announce that Jak and Daxter Collection launches in North America on February 7th. In a few short weeks you’ll be able to score the first three installments of the Jak and Daxter trilogy in one complete PS3 Blu-ray package for just $39.99. Each game has been fully remastered to feature 720p HD visuals and stereoscopic 3D functionality, and one of the coolest new additions to the titles in Jak and Daxter Collection is the introduction of Trophy support. When the series debuted on PS2 over 10 years ago, we didn’t have Trophies. For our jump to PS3, Mass Media crafted custom Trophies for you to earn for all three titles in the collection. The team at Mass Media has created intricate Trophies, each featuring a unique variation on a design theme based around its mission type. There are over 100 to collect including three Platinum Trophies, so you completionists will have hours of Trophy-hunting fun to look forward to. More...
3. Personally, I think racing games shine on handheld devices. Think of it this way: you’re commuting home from work and sitting on a bus or a train. Though your progress may be pokey, your mind is completely focused on the blistering competition between your Bugatti Super Sport and everyone else on the track. For that short time, you completely forget about your commute. So, if your mind works like mine, you should definitely be excited for the arcade racing action of Asphalt: Injection. Asphalt: Injection boasts ten game modes spanning the tried-and-true Race mode to more signature game modes including Cop Chase and Beat ‘Em All (focused on take downs). This, along with 20 different leagues to conquer and multiplayer via local and Wifi, will keep handheld racing fans entertained for a long time. More...
4. Not too long ago there were rumors floating around the internet that the next generation of consoles would be announced and or released in 2012 (usually concerning the Xbox 720). These were quickly shot down by almost every level headed person with a keyboard but let’s sit and think for a second. What if these rumors had been true? I can tell you I would not have been a happy consumer. I am completely happy with the way console gaming is now! You can say all you want that developers have “pushed each console to its limit†but this statement is almost completely graphics based. Do you think that in 2009 when Naughty Dog’s masterpiece “Uncharted 2: Among Thieves†was released that they for a minute thought “we have done all we can for this system, now we need a new one?â€* No they didn’t! They continued to see what they could do better and I honestly didn’t think the snow in Uncharted 2 could be topped but when I saw the massive desert in this year’s sequel “Uncharted3: Drake’s Deception†they once again blew my mind. So I don’t think any developer thinks that they can’t continue to improve their games on the current generation of consoles. Now let’s move to a financial standpoint. Microsoft is still selling a ton of 360’s and to release a new console now would do nothing but hurt them financially. Sure I cannot I am eagerly anticipating Microsoft to move to blu ray and to wow me with what their new console can do but for now I am content. I also heard rumors of a ps4 release (which are even more ridiculous than the 720 predictions) so let’s bring Sony into account.*They have already promised that the playstation 3 will ave a 10 year life cycle of which we are only 5 years into.*They also*have had a major financial hit this year (an estimated 1.97 billion) from many things such as the network crashing and very poor 3D display and initial Vita sales (with the Vita already expected to have a price drop) a ps4 launch would no doubt put them in a worse financial state than they are right now. Also now away from the company’s I as a consumer would not buy one. I being a high school freshman do not have a great income and with me getting a vita, and the games that will be releasing next year I wouldn’t be able to drop $600 on a shiny new console. Plus launch titles of consoles are typically not very good so most likely I’d just be using the initial backwards compatability feature. It is known that both developers are already working on their new consoles. They have been since the current ones launched. Though they will not be released this year I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a tech demo or some sort of blueprints this year. I think a release date*will be announced in 2013 and the first of them will be released in 2014. Hey as long as I get to keep my trophies and gamerscore I’m fine. This gives developers plenty of time to continue to wow us on the consoles*we’ve*come to love these past few years*and I hope 2012 is as great a year for gaming as 2011 was. More...
5. Stick Man Rescue was born of a conversation with my 12-year old son, Colin. He had just discovered the freeware Pivot Stick Figure Animator and, like any 12-year-old boy would, he was using it to make hilarious death animations. Given that game designers are perpetual 12-year-olds at heart, I joined in. This prompted visits to various stick man death websites which provided a surprisingly long-lasting source of giggles that attracted my younger son. Soon the three of us were pondering how to make stick deaths into a video game. Dusting off my rusty programming and non-existent art skills, I co-opted my kids to start making animated gifs of stick deaths and created a prototype game bent on seeing how many of our most ridiculous ideas could be worked into it. 6. Dr. Abraham Zucco -- eccentric billionaire, brilliant anthropologist, and global adventurer -- has traveled the world far and wide in search of the Yeti or “Abominable Snowman.†Recent sightings and mysterious footprints have convinced the famed explorer that an entire colony of creatures is somewhere in PlayStation Home. The wealthy hunter has offered great rewards to anyone who can capture the violent and territorial beast. This Wednesday, January 25th, scores of hunters will descend on PlayStation Home to take down these vicious monsters. They’ll quickly learn that these creatures don’t go down without a fight, and that they’ve enlisted the help of some sympathetic souls that prefer hunting people to gunning down large humanoids. Which side will you be on? More...
7. Over the next week, Ubisoft will be profiling our upcoming portfolio of launch titles for the PlayStation Vita. All these titles will be available a week prior to launch, giving gamers the opportunity to build up their library prior to the launch of this highly anticipated PlayStation handheld or experience the games early if you are picking up the First Edition bundle on 2/14. Let’s kick off the week by stepping into the fantasy genre. But first, a question for my fellow PSP launch owners. How much fun was exploring the fantasy world of Untold Legends? I remember going over to my friend’s house to sit side-by-side as we tackled different dungeons. With Dungeon Hunter Alliance, we’re bringing back that feeling of exploring a fantasy universe along with your friends. 8. I wanted to give Mark Wilson a break this week so that I could talk about the robust online features in ModNation Racers: Road Trip. The team here in San Diego created an impressive list of online functionality to take advantage of the WiFi/3G and GPS functionality. This game is intended to let you take advantage of your road trips—whether they’re across the country, to another state or just traveling between home and work or school. More importantly, ModNation Racers: Road Trip was designed to work around your schedule and let you compete with your friends whenever (and wherever) you want. 1. Competitive Localized Leaderboards When a gamer who has opted to “Use Location Data†posts a lap time to the Leaderboards, that time is connected to their current location. Gamers can personalize their location names (i.e., My Home, My Work, Mark’s House Where I Always Win, etc.) for easy reference. These times become part of the Local Leaderboards which gamers can use to compete in a fun arcade-style atmosphere. More...
9. Hey everyone, I'm back with some great news — Twisted Metal's gone gold in North America! We — the crew over at Eat Sleep Play and Sony Santa Monica — have been working so hard for the past few years and it's tough to express just how happy we are to be one enormous step closer to putting Twisted Metal in your hands this coming Valentine's Day. We put a lot of love into this game and can't wait for you all to play it and let us know what you think. But the good news doesn't stop there. Our friends over at LightBox Interactive have been cooking up something really amazing, and I'm excited to show it to you all today — the Sweet Tooth Outcast Multiplayer skin for Starhawk, coming May 8th! Every copy of Twisted Metal will include a voucher for this awesome skin. On top of that, if you pre-order Twisted Metal you'll get early access to Axel and a free upgrade to the Limited Edition that comes with a code to download Twisted Metal: Black. More...
10. Welcome to the second blog on Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock. I'm Simon Harris and I am the Executive Producer for BBC Worldwide on the game, which means the project is my overall responsibility. I need to ensure that all aspects come together to make a great game that stays true to the Doctor Who brand. This means working with our developer, Supermassive Games, across areas such as design, art and programming. It also extends to working with the Doctor Who teams in London and Cardiff to ensure that everything looks and feels as it should. For this blog post, I thought I would give you some insight into the monsters which will be appearing in the game. This goes alongside our first gameplay trailer, released today, which showcases them. More...

12. We were humbled this week by the massive turnout at this week's Vita Social Club meetups. We had never held more than one in a week, and here we were in five cities over two days, and close to 1500 of you turned out. That was awesome, especially considering the conditions in places like Chicago, where it was really damn cold! If you weren't able to make it out to one of our grand opening events last week, fear not, as we're open in eight cities through launch. Click here for details. 13. This week, Jeff, Rey and I dispersed across the US to host a series of grand opening community events for our Vita Hill social clubs. I took on New York City and Boston, Jeff took Chicago, and Rey took Miami and Atlanta. The response was phenomenal: In NYC alone, more than 300 community members lined up to play PS Vita on Tuesday night; in Boston, more than 200 members braved icy winds for Wednesday's showcase. As always, it was a treat to meet the PlayStation community (the best in the business, if you ask me) and quiz them on their favorite games. Thanks for coming out, guys! More...
14. We’re a bit late this month due to the post-holiday rush, but we’re ready to go over December 2011’s top-selling PSN content! The release of the fan favorite Sonic CD was big enough to dethrone inFAMOUS: Festival of Blood from the top spot this month. Hats off to our favorite blue hedgehog! In PS one Classics, the battle for the top spot saw a changing of the guard with new release Final Fantasy VI, while Crash Bandicoot snuck in to the top 5 to shake things up a bit. Lastly, horror adventure Corpse Party continues to dominate the PSP charts, while sports content for FIFA Soccer ‘12 and NHL ‘12 formed the majority of the top 5 Add-Ons. What PSN content warmed your holidays the most? Got any predictions for next month’s top sellers? Let us know in the comments below and we’ll see you in February with January’s top PSN hits. More...

16. Hello everybody! What you’ll find below is a specially narrated cut of the cinematic intro to WipEout 2048 on PlayStation Vita. Essentially, the movie’s goal is to take you on a journey through the evolution of motorsport in Studio Liverpool’s vision of the world, up until the point where Anti-Gravity technology has replaced modern day automotive technology and the first season of the Anti-Gravity Racing Championships has kicked off on the streets of Nova State City. So, without further ado, sit back, press play and let Game Director Graeme Ankers, and Art Director Lee Carus, take you on a trip through time to the year 2048. What’s really interesting about WipEout 2048 and the direction the team at Studio Liverpool took with it, is that it takes place in the not too distant future and serves as a precursor to the events that take place in the original WipEout on PS one. And because of that it differs from WipEout experiences in the past. More...
17. If you’ve ever dreamed of a career in video game development, you’ve got to listen to this week’s episode of PlayStation Blogcast! Our special guest host is SCEA Senior Producer Kyle Shubel, who has worked on litany of high-profile PlayStation titles, including Killzone 3, Heavenly Sword, and LittleBigPlanet. In today’s episode, Kyle explains what a “game producer†actually does, walks us through his day-to-day role on the PS Vita action-RPG Warrior’s Lair, and shares his tips for breaking into game design. Good stuff! Afterwards, Kyle sticks around for another monster segment as we discuss some of our most-anticipated games of 2012, from Starhawk to Sorcery to Hitman: Absolution to PS Vita’s launch lineup and more. Be sure to leave your top picks for 2012 in the comments below! You’ll also hear a new batch of user questions, a new PSN Gem of the Week, and of course, the first details on next week’s PSN software lineup. So listen up! More...
18. Ni Hao PlayStation Playas, this is John Diamonon, the Brand Manager for Resident Evil in North America, and it’s been a while my friends. Last time I was here, I announced MvC3 and you were all like, “Yeah!†This time, I have news that’s gonna make you say, “EFF yeah!†It’s my pleasure to announce that the next installment of the canonical Resident Evil series, Resident Evil 6, returns on November 20, 2012. That gives you a whole month to enjoy the game (enjoy life really) before the end of the Mayan calendar when the real zombie apocalypse happens. We figure you might need some practice killing the infected to prepare yourself. Oops. Did I say zombies? Resident Evil 6 has zombies? More...
19. Back in November we announced Adrian Gonzalez as our cover athlete for MLB 12 The Show, and today we are excited to reveal that cover image. When sports fans look for MLB 12 The Show on store shelves beginning March 6th, they’ll see the Red Sox All-Star first baseman gracing a cover that has a new, sleek look and one that makes a bold statement – "Highest Rated Sports Game 4 Years in a Row." Here's a glimpse... The Show has been and continues to be the market leading and most realistic baseball title of this console generation and the number-one rated sports video game over the past four years, so we're psyched to have one the best all-around players in baseball representing MLB 12. The first overall pick by the Florida Marlins in the 2000 MLB Draft, Gonzalez has ascended to the top of his sport, both on the field and at the plate. He is a four-time All-Star (2008-2011), three-time Rawlings Gold Glove winner (2008, 2009, 2011), and 2011 Silver Slugger Award winner. More...
20. Learning how to bring characters to life with all the nuances of personality, habits, quirks and mannerisms was really Sony Bend’s first and most important job when we started to work on Uncharted: Golden Abyss. We have an awesome example in the Uncharted series, and we wanted to give the characters a level of depth that transcends the screen. These videos shows just a glimpse of our process and how we worked with our eclectic cast of characters. I’m no stranger to writing, having written all the Syphon Filter games, but this title taught me some new tricks. By the time we started shooting in February 2011, I had gone through over 40 revisions, changing everything from setting, characters, names, dialogue and action. If we count all the in-game VO dialogue, we ended up with over 400 pages of script for Uncharted: Golden Abyss. More...
21. Hello PSN players! I hope that the season has been kind to you. While we’re still in the tail-end of the Winter of RPGs, I’m here to share something completely different with you! I’d like to introduce you to the newest female hero to join the Square Enix family. She’s an unlikely heroine, but she’s proven herself in her most recent adventure. I’m talking, of course, about Scarygirl. But who is Scarygirl? That’s a question she herself has been striving to answer. She washed ashore on an island, and was taken in by a friendly octopus named Blister. Scarygirl knew that she was different—after all, she has one arm that’s a tentacle, one arm that’s a bone, and a really cool eyepatch. Her problems started when she began having nightmares about a mysterious man. When Blister was unable to help her, he sent Scarygirl to the wise—if cryptic—Bunniguru. And, after speaking to him, she set out on a journey to discover the mystery of the man behind her nightmares. More...

The bad news: Details are so scarce that we haven’t seen so much as a single screenshot! Luckily, Netherrealm Studios Creative Director Ed Boon emerged from the shadows to share first details with PlayStation.Blog readers, including the existence of a PS Vita-exclusive second Challenge Tower and hints at how the game will take advantage of PS Vita’s unique hardware capabilities. Read up on our full Q&A below and check back soon for more details on this spring’s eagerly anticipated portable pugilist.
PlayStation.Blog: What’s the scope of Mortal Kombat for PS Vita? Does it include all the content from the PS3 game? Ed Boon, Creative Director, Netherrealm Studios: It’s actually everything from the PS3 game: the entire Story mode and all the downloadable characters and content, plus additional modes and features that are tailored for PS Vita. 23. Last December I attended the Tokyo launch of PlayStation Vita, which is going to be in your hands just about one month from now. While I was there I got to chat with Tokashi Sogabe of the Sony Corporate Design Centre, head of the team in charge of the aesthetic of the console. Sogabe-san has 27 years of experience working with Sony, in which time he has designed the Walkman, Vaio notebooks, the current slimmer model of PS3 and many other electronic devices. 25. For years there’s been somewhat of a line between the online areas of MLB The Show and the rest of the game...sometimes that line was faint, sometimes it was distinct. Coming into the development of MLB 12 The Show, we really wanted to eliminate that line so this lead to the idea of Online Everywhere. The game modes in the main menu of MLB 12 The Show now have all game modes, offline and online in the same list. As you can see from the image below, Home Run Derby is listed in game modes, once selected you’ll be able to select offline or online. You’ll also see Diamond Dynasty, which is an entirely new mode that mixes offline and online components and includes elements never before seen in a sports game (more info on both of those modes to come soon). Moving over one click to the right from the main menu, there's now a community menu with the online features available. More...
