PlayStation’s longest running franchise has already graced PTOM’s cover once (our November 2010 issue), but we just can’t get enough of Sweet Tooth and the rest of the demented Twisted Metal gang. As the February 14th release date of PS3’s next big exclusive nears, we visit developer Eat Sleep Play and get the lowdown on the game’s multiplayer modes. We also managed to walk away with breakdowns on vehicle strengths and weaknesses courtesy of David Jaffe himself, as well as maps and strategy tips for four locations. The February issue also means its time for our 2011 Game of the Year awards! Time to throw out the review scores and reflect on the year’s greatest gaming experiences away from the pressures of impending deadlines. It’s one last opportunity for the PTOM crew to argue, debate, and pummel each other into submission and agreement. Sure, some of the choices might be predictable, but even we were surprised by some of the winners. More...

At last week’s International CES, I had the opportunity to meet the top man at Sony Computer Entertainment, President and CEO Andrew House. House ascended to the role, replacing Kazuo Hirai, after working for Sony in Japan, Europe, and here at SCEA over the past two decades. In this show floor discussion, I ask House about PlayStation Suite, his outlook on the Western launch of PS Vita, and what he plans to accomplish as CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment. If you’d like to hear how Andrew House got started in the industry and rose through the ranks, listen to his “origin story†on the Official PlayStation Blogcast Episode 007. By valuing stealth, careful observation, and meticulous planning over the run-and-gun bulletstorms of its contemporaries, the Hitman series has earned a sizable fan base over its long and celebrated career. As coldblooded antihero Agent 47, the player quietly stalks his prey through a Kafka-esque maze of guards and security measures, donning disguises, blending in with the crowd, and evading or subduing threats in order to efficiently fulfill his latest contract kill. The key phrase here is blending in; in Hitman, to stand out is to be detected, and to be detected is to die in a hail of gunfire. This tense, analytical formula has served Hitman well over many successful sequels. But the steep learning curve and unforgiving stealth segments have also proven polarizing, preventing some newcomers from embracing what is by all accounts a uniquely rewarding stealth-action title. Taking a cue from 2011’s successful launch of Deus Ex: Human Revolution -- another stealth game that sought to broaden its appeal without betraying its roots -- Hitman: Absolution seeks to have its bloody cake and eat it, too. Happy 2012! We’re starting the year off with a fresh batch of UNCHARTED 3 DLC content and more in the pipeline that prophecies forbid us from fully portending quite yet. Hope you’ve all gotten 2012 off to a rocking start even with all the 2012 phenomenon chatter. If not, we’re about to make your end of days talk and your UNCHARTED gaming life much more awesome. First off, today we’ll be releasing four maps we teased a couple of weeks after the UNCHARTED 3 launch. You’ll be getting the Cave, Fort, Lost City, and Sanctuary maps in this download pack. Dynamic lighting effects, new particle effects and a slew of technical changes have been made to these maps. The lighting was reworked from scratch. New textures and weather effects are apparent and freshly decorate all maps. We poured hours of development time into these maps to make them be really fun in the UNCHARTED 3 multiplayer ecosystem. This map pack is a taste of how far we can go to remix some of your favorite maps into a completely new UNCHARTED 3 gameplay experience. More...

If you’re anything like me, you’ll be spending a lot more time enjoying this fun new feature than you would ever have expected. The Mod Postcards feature is found in the “Favorites†section of the Creation Station and for a good reason – you’ll be coming back to it over and over (and more than likely yet again). 1. Postcard Image The first thing you’ll be asked to do is either load an image or take a photo. “Take a photo†is fairly straightforward. Using either the Vita’s front or rear camera you’ll frame your shot using the front touch screen’s viewfinder. You’ll notice a miniature Tag and his Kart superimposed into the center of the display awaiting the click of the shutter. Simply touch the “Take Pic†icon in the top left corner to take the picture. We're at the halfway point of what is for most of us a long holiday weekend. Early tomorrow, I'll be on a jet to Chicago for one of five PlayStation Vita meet-ups to take place this week. We've never done social events in Atlanta, Chicago, or Miami, so I'm quite looking forward to meeting new PlayStation fans - even if it means I'm going to have to buy some gloves. If you can make it to one of the events, be sure to RSVP here so we know much food to bring!
The PS.Blog weekly reading list (Week of January 9, 2012)

Skyrim Set in 2012 Is a Lot Less Appealing - Wired.com

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Review in Progress - PlayStation 3 Feature at IGN

The Most Exciting PlayStation 3 Games of 2012 - PS3 Feature at IGN

“Sorcery†PlayStation Move Brian Upton Interview

Uncharted 3 leads AIAS 2011 award nominations - Joystiq
More...

Much like Jeff and Rey, I'll be racking up some some serious frequent flier miles this week. I'll be heading to the US East Coast to help launch our PS Vita Social Clubs in New York City (on 1/17) and Boston (1/18). If you're in the area, stop by to check out a wide array of PS Vita games, eat free food, and get a shot at winning PlayStation gear. If you want to go, be sure to RSVP...and arrive early! This past November and December we conducted our Private Beta for Starhawk. It was incredibly valuable to our team at LightBox and SCEA Santa Monica. We really appreciate all of the time that players have spent uncovering bugs and glitches, we would have never been able to find this many of them without real-world gameplay. The Beta effort has been a true partnership with our community so we humbly thank you all. Without your help, we wouldn't be able to progress to the next chapter in the development of the game: the Public Beta! We're now happy to announce that the Starhawk Public Beta begins this Tuesday, January 17th. This is a crucial step for us as we'll be testing all sorts of things, including game balance, server traffic, and general bugs. This is also a chance for more players to finally see what we've been working so hard on. As we've been getting so much support and encouragement from fans and press alike, we're excited to spread the love and get more input to make the best game possible. More...

Back in September, we previewed StarHawk for the first time on UFreqTV in PlayStation Home*for our fans. Even before this, right away Jack (UFreqTV’s Host) pointed out at E3 that we need to keep an eye on this game. He talked about how the “Build & Battle” would bring a whole new element to our tournaments when the time comes. Then came the Private Beta in November, and boy Jack was not kidding. Right out of the gate we were*ecstatic when we saw that a user could create a Sever/Lobby with a custom title. We had not seen this in a game since Socom: Confrontation. Though many will say, so what, that is not any thing new or special. Well they are correct *it isn’t anything new, the ability to create a custom lobby was all but a tail from the past until now. Clans putting up Recruiting Rooms, Practice Rooms and Tournament Communities having the Room labeled “UF Blue RVN vs 101″ showing the world the clans were battling in a tournament. And though the Private Beta is a very slim view of what is yet to come, it already has all that is needed for Urgent Fury to launch a full Tournament Offering. The tactical requirements that a team will have to use in this game will make for some nail-biting matches. Throw in the Urgent Fury TacMap element where clans are competing over territories for 13 to 24 weeks to become the champion and you have a recipe for “EPIC”! We are pleased to present the 2012 Tournament Title of the Year to StarHawk, exclusively on PlayStation 3. Be sure to stay tuned as we begin to announce tournament details and how to sign up. On top of all the great tactical play LightBox Interactive and Sony Santa Monica Studios are actually involved with the community responding to bugs, suggestions, gripes and praises. Not only that as one fan pointed out, there were more updates in the Private Beta than in the entire Call of Duty Series. Now we cannot confirm if that is correct, but I will say we saw updates daily and even multiple updates in a day when there was an issue. The public beta will being on*January*17th, 2012 and you can find all the details on the PlayStation Blog. And rest assured you will see at least one UrgentFury.com server up and running almost daily. Also keep your eye out for Episode 93 of Urgent Frequency as Commander Fury is joined by Sr. Producer Harvard Bonin as they sit down via SatCom and discuss StarHawk and what Harvard’s job really is in the grand scheme of things. This episode is due to release on January 15th. More...

Before you stands a tower, and upon that tower stands an angry bowman, shooting wave upon wave of arrows in your direction. He’s far out of reach, and the tower completely blocks your path, so you’re forced to deal with this situation in order to proceed – but how do you go about it? You could always hack at the tower’s support structure with your sword, wearing it away bit by bit until the whole thing comes tumbling to the ground...but that might take a while, and the bowman would be shooting you in the head repeatedly the whole time. Maybe you’d be better off taking out your paintbrush and drawing a sloped platform up, over and around the tower, creating a bridge to guide you past it safely. Or perhaps you could set the tower (and its occupant) ablaze, or spawn a lightning-spewing thundercloud above it and let Mother Nature handle the rest. Or, if you’re feeling particularly frisky, how about summoning a phoenix or a sacred lion and directing it to spew waves of holy energy at the tower, instantly reducing it and any threats beyond it to ashes? We are at <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/ces12/'>http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/ces12/">CES this week showing off the latest, near-final build of <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/unit-13/'>http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/unit-13/">Unit 13 and we have something special in store for the PlayStation.Blog community. First, in case you missed the announcement from the PS Vita CES keynote yesterday afternoon, Unit 13 is scheduled for release on Tuesday, March 6th. We are quite excited to bring this new title to PS Vita. Thanks to the excellent dual analogs sticks on the Vita, Unit 13 represents the first full shooter experience on a portable gaming device. But don’t take our word for it: the press have been playing it and really like what they see. How goes it, friends? We’re almost one month away from the PS Vita launch here in North America, and Namco Bandai Games is nearly ready to launch the next chapter in the Katamari saga on February 22nd in North America and Europe. We’ve already been over how the new core gameplay mechanics will work: You’ll stretch and squeeze your katamari using the rear touchscreen, changing the shape of your rolly ball of fun to better maneuver around each level. What we haven’t yet shared is the story! Watch the prologue video below to get a look at the terrifying revelation uncovered by the King of All Cosmos at the beginning of our stretchy tale. Once the greatest in the universe, the king finds out that his level of cool is now only on par with something he simply won’t stand for… thus beginning a redemption tale for the ages! More...
