It's a pity the weather is so nice out here in the Bay Area, because all I want to do right now is have a controller in my hand. Battlefield 3 lands in under 48 hours (don't forget: PS3 owners get first crack at the game's DLC packs); look for reviews of that, as well as next week's greatly anticipated Uncharted 3 to hit this week. The PSN is bursting with exclusive games, and you can add PixelJunk Sidescroller and inFAMOUS: Festival of Blood to that list on Tuesday. And I'm still just a few hours into the excellent Batman: Arkham City. It's truly the best time of the year. Shame about all that unused sun out there.
The PS.Blog weekly reading list (Week of October 17, 2011

The PlayStation Vita Is Set to Succeed - IGN

Mapping The Development of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception - 1UP.com

Preview: Escape Plan - Destructoid
More...

Like many of you, I suspect, I'm spending this weekend curled up with an old friend: The Dark Knight. So far, Arkham City is proving to be a delight. Gotham has never looked better (I'm told it dazzles in 3D!), and Batman himself has learned a host of powerful new techniques, from plunging off buildings to whiplashing over rooftops to some fancy new melee strikes and throws. Based on what I've played, Arkham City is the rare sequel that ups the ante in every conceivable way without compromising the series' fundamental strengths. Nice job, Rocksteady! If you're playing Arkham City, be sure to share your thoughts in the comments below. In other news, this week saw the release of the PlayStation Move-fortified party game Everybody Dance, the four-player frenemy feuding of Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, PSN exclusives Okabu and Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken (among many others; see the PlayStation Store update for the full list) and new SOCOM 4 DLC. Nathan Drake’s adventures are never easy: There’s danger around every corner! As you may remember from our casting call, Spike TV developed a blockbuster reality competition that brings that action to life in the UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception Race to the Ring TV special that airs on Spike TV Monday, October 31st at 11:30pm Pacific Time (10:30pm Central). We were stoked to hear from so many wannabe Drakes out there. After we sorted through the mountain of die-hard UNCHARTED fans that entered, we chose five lucky contestants -- all with very different backgrounds -- to participate in a competition worthy of an UNCHARTED adventure. The competition will test the limits of their endurance, strength, accuracy, and agility while pushing their knowledge of Drake’s adventures to the extreme. For a taste of the action, check out our preview video for the UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception Race to the Ring Special above. I am excited to announce that Medieval Moves: Deadmund’s Quest has indeed “gone gold†and is ready to ship to stores on November 15th! Soon after completing Sports Champions for the PS3, our team was hard at work on this exciting new project. Taking what we had learned from creating a “best in breed†motion control game, we further refined the controls for this fun action-adventure game specifically designed for the PlayStation Move. inFAMOUS: Festival of Blood will be available on the PlayStation Store in just a couple days. Before you can get your hands on the game, we had Billy Harper (Animation Director) and Ken Schramm (Marketing Director) pack their bags for a whirlwind three-day tour spanning 5,668 miles, two coasts, three cities, and over 20 interviews with press from North America and beyond. It was an amazing couple days of sharing the latest adventure in the inFAMOUS universe. We have been pretty quiet about Festival of Blood, not really sharing anything since we teased you with a clip revealing Bloody Mary at PAX. Since then we have been hard at work crafting this next adventure, adding in all the last details, and finishing touches on this standalone game to make the perfect purchase right in time for Halloween. This Press Tour allowed us to pull the curtain back and give one big preview before the game comes out next week. Billy and Ken covered tons of the new features in Festival of Blood, some of which we will cover here. More...

We were so happy with the response to Starhawk at PAX that the SCEA marketing machine leveled-up, cast Videozzaga and summoned a quick video of our Santa Monica Sr. Producer Harvard Bonin talking with people at the show in Seattle after they got hands-on with Starhawk! Not only was it great to see people loving Starhawk at PAX, the team and I love seeing coverage and buzz about the game start to pick up speed. And with our announcement last week that early access keys for the Starhawk Public Beta will be included in Uncharted 3, well... things are now moving forward at ludicrous speed! It was great to read all the comments, tweets and Facebook posts from players who are just now getting introduced to Starhawk’s gameplay and universe and the LightBox Interactive team and I can’t wait to see all of you online in early 2012! PixelJunk SideScroller is not far from your hands! Yes, it has kind of crept up upon us, but the release date is 1st of November in North America. I really can't emphasize enough how really, really good, old-school fun SideScroller has turned out to be. I'm sure some of you have played the "bonus" stage in PixelJunk Shooter 2 called "The Road to Dawn", well that is what gave us the urge to make an entire side scrolling shoot-em-up game! Back in the day I used to love games such as R-Type and Darius, and going even further back there were games such as Scramble and Defender that inspired me as a child. So...we decided to dip our toes in and see what PixelJunk could bring to the side-scroller world. We used the same engine as for the two Shooter titles, but the game itself is entirely different. To begin with this is a single-stick controlled game rather than the dual-stick control we had in Shooter, which makes it even more addictive and easy to control. And of course, you can only face to the right as you fly your craft! The only similarity really is that a handful of enemies from Shooter have been "re-imagined" for SideScroller, but to add to them we created a whole slew of new enemies and bosses for you to try to destroy also. Hey baseball fans! The 2011 World Series is about to get underway so we're here to predict the winner of this year's Fall Classic using the most realistic sports game around, MLB 11 The Show. We recently simulated the matchup between the Texas Rangers and the St. Louis Cardinals and judging by the results, you may want to fasten your seatbelts because it's going to be a wild ride. Here's a quick video rundown of the series (see above). As you can see, the Cards took the early series advantage, winning Game 1 behind the arm of their ace, Chris Carpenter, but the Rangers took back the momentum, and home field advantage, with an important win in Game 2. With the series back in Texas, the Cardinals fought hard behind their big bats, Matt Holiday and Lance Berkman, and retook the lead in the series with a surprising Game 3 victory. There was no panic in Texas, however, as Nelson Cruz continued his red hot postseason with home runs in Games 4 and 5 that propelled the Rangers to back-to-back victories and a 3-2 series lead as both teams returned to St. Louis. With their backs to the wall, the redbirds gave it there all in Game 6, but pitching and defense turned out to play the biggest part as neither team could break through offensively keeping the game scoreless into the late innings. Finally, a clutch, two-out hit by Josh Hamilton gave Texas the lead late in the game, and that was all the Rangers' stellar bullpen would need, as they nailed down the victory and a World Series title. Hi everyone! With Worms Crazy Golf launching on the U.S. PlayStation Store on Tuesday, October 25th, for $9.99 (PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive a 20% launch discount for the first 2 weeks of release).
We’d like to introduce the game to you all by answering a few key questions:
Q: Can you describe how the intriguing idea of combining Worms and golf came about? A: We started with the fact Worms is a pretty crazy and surreal game anyway, so we felt it would be ideally suited for combining with ‘crazy golf’. Coupled with the fact that both Worms and golf are both turn-based games, it seemed pretty natural to us that the two games could be mixed together into some sort of highly entertaining cocktail! And with the fun, competitive nature of both Worms and golf gameplay, we thought it would work very well in a social multi-player setting. Fortunately, I think our instincts were proven right!
