3. Story by Greg Miller @ IGN.com. Save the world without spending a dime. If the proposition of buying DC Universe Online and then paying a monthly fee has been keeping you away from Sony Online Entertainment’s MMO, prepare to enter Gotham City next month. In October, DC Universe Online goes free to play. Both PlayStation 3 and PC players will be able to download and play the game for free. Three tiered levels will act as the game’s revenue source from there along with in-game microtransactions. Here’s the official breakdown from SOE. Free New players will now have access to the current gameplay in DC Universe Online (including Gotham City, Metropolis, and all current raids and alerts), with the ability to create two characters, join a league and many other benefits. Free level players will be able to purchase downloadable game packs/updates, additional character slots, powers and more through microtransactions. Premium Any player who has spent at least $5 (including former paid subscribers and new players who have purchased $5 of in-game items) will qualify for the Premium access level. Premium level players will have more benefits available to them than the Free level player, including additional character slots, additional inventory slots, and higher cash limits. Downloadable adventure packs, additional character slots, and more can be purchased in-game. Legendary Maximum features and benefits are included at this level. Loaded with enhanced additional features, Legendary access will be available for a $14.99 monthly fee and includes all DLC packs at no cost, more than 15 character slots, more than 80 inventory slots, the ability to form unrestricted-sized leagues, and many other benefits. If you’ve already paid for a PC lifetime subscription or a PS3 plan, that deal still stands when this switch happens in late October. This event also marks the end of DCUO’s mandatory auto-renew feature. In the past, the game would automatically resubscribe you when your subscription lapsed. That’s still an option, but it’s no longer mandatory — a result of the more than 40 percent of people who quit EverQuest II and complained about the auto-renew in a SOE survey. “We decided ‘Let’s listen to them’,” said John Smedley, SOE president. “I don’t know about you, but my credit card statement every month is this amalgam of s*** of MMOs that I’m too lazy to cancel. What we want is to offer people a way to not worry about that.” The announcement of the free to play move comes just seven months after SOE released DC Universe Online. SOE wouldn’t go into the exact number of subscribers currently playing the game, but Smedley said numbers are up since the move to megaservers and that free to play was not in response to subscriber numbers. “In terms of ‘Is it a result in a drop in subs’ – absolutely not,” he said. “This is the right business model. If I can be honest, the game ended up costing a lot more than we thought it would, and this was our preferred business model from day one.” If you’re a stickler for fair play, SOE said you don’t have to worry about microtransactions breaking the game. Super-powerful items such as Superman’s raid suit will not be purchasable and experience won’t be for sale in October. The experience will be similar to Free Realms’ free to play model, SOE said, and you can expect to see it in games that are out now and future releases. “We are really seeing the benefits of free to play, and we’re really liking it,” Smedley said. “Needless to say we’re paying close attention to it and maybe looking to make some surprise moves a little later.” Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...

 10. What could possibly be better than battling with thousands of other players online in the first, and only, action MMO on the PS? How about battling FOR FREE? That’s right, DC Universe Online will soon be free to download from the PlayStation Store, and free-to-play with no monthly fees required. So what’s the catch? There is none. The entire game will be open for you to play for free. We have gotten a lot of feedback from gamers asking for an opportunity to play without a subscription requirement. So, that got us thinking about how to offer access to the game in a way that allows gamers to play their way. We wanted something that would give players options. We know different types of gamers are playing - and want to play - DCUO, and we want each person to be able to play in a way that best fits their style. That’s why we’ve created three levels of access to the game: More...

It’s tough to distill the concept down to a couple of sentences without doing the experience a huge injustice, but this excellent trailer (above) should give you an idea of the mood and visual direction. Now take that ethereal aesthetic, and the tingling that you’re feeling in your temples, and fold a layer of smartly accessible strategy elements over it. 21. Story by Brian Ashcraft @ Kotaku.com. The newest core entry in Capcom’s popular survival series Resident Evil is Resident Evil 6. The game was revealed at today’s Tokyo Game Show. The above clip was shown today at Capcom’s TGS theater, which is running trailers for all its upcoming games. It opened with the Resident Evil (née “Biohazard” in Japan) 15th anniversary logo, before showing the Capcom logo on the screen. On a black screen, the following words appeared: “The world has seen all kinds of horror… Bio-organic weapons have taken over.” A spinning blue earth appeared on screen. “And one place has the key to stop it all,” read the next title card. An image appeared on the screen momentarily. It looked like some sort of lab or industrial area. On the final title card, the following numbers appeared: 48.415802,-89.2673. The camera pans up through what looked like falling debris to the Resident Evil 6 logo. Back in 2009, it was mentioned that the inevitable Resident Evil 6 was going to be a complete reboot. Apparently, Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi is not helming the sequel. In fall 2010, former Capcom producer Keiji Inafune said there would be news about RE6 “shortly”. The video was originally uploaded by YouTube user sdx4life. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...

GamerJunkie.net also wrote about this e-mail, however they called Microsoft and got several pieces of information backing up the fact that this is a phishing attack. 1. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Beta Codes were sent in June. 2. The email is sent from an address that has been hacked. 3. All of the links in the email are to phish your information. 4. 25. Story by Mike Fahey @ Kotaku.com. Have you agreed to the new PlayStation Network terms of service yet? If you have, then you’ve agreed not to take Sony to court or participate in a class action lawsuit against the company. You really should read things before you sign them, even digitally. Today Sony Network Entertainment America transfers its online services to Sony Network Entertainment International, and PlayStation Network members are being asked to agree to an updated terms of service document to reflect that change, but they’re agreeing to much more than a new global Sony Entertainment Network. They’re agreeing to not take any Sony Entity to court regarding any Sony online services or the use of any devices sold by a Sony entity to access those services. It’s right there in section 15 of the document: Other than those matters listed in the Exclusions from Arbitration clause (small claims), you and the Sony Entity that you have a Dispute with agree to seek resolution of the Dispute only through arbitration of that Dispute in accordance with the terms of this Section 15, and not litigate any Dispute in court. Arbitration means that the Dispute will be resolved by a neutral arbitrator instead of in a court by a judge or jury. In summary, in order to use the PlayStation Network, you must agree to settle any dispute with the company outside of court. That’s not all. There’s also a class action waiver in section 15, which states that those agreeing to the terms of service are also agreeing to setting their disputes with Sony entities one-on-one. That means they cannot participate in a group action, unless that group action was set in motion before August 20, 2011. It’s a rather sneaky move on the part of Sony’s legal department, though it isn’t quite as nasty as it sounds. I mean, they did give us a way to opt-out of the agreement: RIGHT TO OPT OUT OF BINDING ARBITRATION AND CLASS ACTION WAIVER WITHIN 30 DAYS. IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO BE BOUND BY THE BINDING ARBITRATION AND CLASS ACTION WAIVER IN THIS SECTION 15, YOU MUST NOTIFY SNEI IN WRITING WITHIN 30 DAYS OF THE DATE THAT YOU ACCEPT THIS AGREEMENT. YOUR WRITTEN NOTIFICATION MUST BE MAILED TO 6080 CENTER DRIVE, 10TH FLOOR, LOS ANGELES, CA 90045, ATTN: LEGAL DEPARTMENT/ARBITRATION AND MUST INCLUDE: (1) YOUR NAME, (2) YOUR ADDRESS, (3) YOUR PSN ACCOUNT NUMBER, IF YOU HAVE ONE, AND (4) A CLEAR STATEMENT THAT YOU DO NOT WISH TO RESOLVE DISPUTES WITH ANY SONY ENTITY THROUGH ARBITRATION. Ah, written notice, the pleasant way to say, “Fuck you, buy a stamp.” It’s an inconvenient out, but it is an out. Otherwise you’re not only bound for the duration of your agreement, but until the end of time, thanks to the continuation clause at the end of the section. So your options are send a letter, deal with it, cancel your PlayStation Network account, or wait until such a time as a judge deems this illegal or unenforceable, which I can’t imagine will take too long. I’ve contact the PlayStation folks for comment, and will update the post should they respond. Update: Sony’s Patrick Seybold responded to my inquiry with the following: “This language in our TOS is common and similar to that of many other service related Terms of Service Agreements. It is designed to benefit both the consumer and the company by ensuring that there is adequate time and procedures to resolve disputes.” Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...
