  3. Story by Brian Ashcraft @ Kotaku.com. The newest core entry in Capcom’s popular survival series Resident Evil is Resident Evil 6. The game was revealed at today’s Tokyo Game Show. The above clip was shown today at Capcom’s TGS theater, which is running trailers for all its upcoming games. It opened with the Resident Evil (née “Biohazard” in Japan) 15th anniversary logo, before showing the Capcom logo on the screen. On a black screen, the following words appeared: “The world has seen all kinds of horror… Bio-organic weapons have taken over.” A spinning blue earth appeared on screen. “And one place has the key to stop it all,” read the next title card. An image appeared on the screen momentarily. It looked like some sort of lab or industrial area. On the final title card, the following numbers appeared: 48.415802,-89.2673. The camera pans up through what looked like falling debris to the Resident Evil 6 logo. Back in 2009, it was mentioned that the inevitable Resident Evil 6 was going to be a complete reboot. Apparently, Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi is not helming the sequel. In fall 2010, former Capcom producer Keiji Inafune said there would be news about RE6 “shortly”. The video was originally uploaded by YouTube user sdx4life. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...
  4. Story by Liam Dunne @ XboxDailyNews. THE BUZZ:*Several people (Including myself) are being sent virus e-mails claiming to contain a beta code for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The e-mail seems to of come from Microsoft, with Call Of Duty: Mw3 Beta in the subject line.*You can view the e-mail here: *http://i.imgur.com/DnNXC.png and here:*http://i.imgur.com/E9T01.png If you click on any one of one of these links your information will be sent to the people who sent the e-mail. GamerJunkie.net also wrote about this e-mail, however they called Microsoft and got several pieces of information backing up the fact that this is a phishing attack. 1. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Beta Codes were sent in June. 2. The email is sent from an address that has been hacked. 3. All of the links in the email are to phish your information. 4. The bottom of the email mentions Treyarch which has nothing to do with MW3. 5. The beta ends September 31st 2011. September 31st 2011 does not exist. EGM’S TAKE:* While Phishing attacks are common nowadays, these hackers may come across someone who so desperately wants to play Mw3 they might click it, or they might come across a person who doesn’t know what’s going on, click the e-mail then get their info taken. We would just like to warn you if you get a message fitting this description don’t open it, just delete it straight away. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...

  7. Story by Mike Fahey @ Kotaku.com. Have you agreed to the new PlayStation Network terms of service yet? If you have, then you’ve agreed not to take Sony to court or participate in a class action lawsuit against the company. You really should read things before you sign them, even digitally. Today Sony Network Entertainment America transfers its online services to Sony Network Entertainment International, and PlayStation Network members are being asked to agree to an updated terms of service document to reflect that change, but they’re agreeing to much more than a new global Sony Entertainment Network. They’re agreeing to not take any Sony Entity to court regarding any Sony online services or the use of any devices sold by a Sony entity to access those services. It’s right there in section 15 of the document: Other than those matters listed in the Exclusions from Arbitration clause (small claims), you and the Sony Entity that you have a Dispute with agree to seek resolution of the Dispute only through arbitration of that Dispute in accordance with the terms of this Section 15, and not litigate any Dispute in court. Arbitration means that the Dispute will be resolved by a neutral arbitrator instead of in a court by a judge or jury. In summary, in order to use the PlayStation Network, you must agree to settle any dispute with the company outside of court. That’s not all. There’s also a class action waiver in section 15, which states that those agreeing to the terms of service are also agreeing to setting their disputes with Sony entities one-on-one. That means they cannot participate in a group action, unless that group action was set in motion before August 20, 2011. It’s a rather sneaky move on the part of Sony’s legal department, though it isn’t quite as nasty as it sounds. I mean, they did give us a way to opt-out of the agreement: RIGHT TO OPT OUT OF BINDING ARBITRATION AND CLASS ACTION WAIVER WITHIN 30 DAYS. IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO BE BOUND BY THE BINDING ARBITRATION AND CLASS ACTION WAIVER IN THIS SECTION 15, YOU MUST NOTIFY SNEI IN WRITING WITHIN 30 DAYS OF THE DATE THAT YOU ACCEPT THIS AGREEMENT. YOUR WRITTEN NOTIFICATION MUST BE MAILED TO 6080 CENTER DRIVE, 10TH FLOOR, LOS ANGELES, CA 90045, ATTN: LEGAL DEPARTMENT/ARBITRATION AND MUST INCLUDE: (1) YOUR NAME, (2) YOUR ADDRESS, (3) YOUR PSN ACCOUNT NUMBER, IF YOU HAVE ONE, AND (4) A CLEAR STATEMENT THAT YOU DO NOT WISH TO RESOLVE DISPUTES WITH ANY SONY ENTITY THROUGH ARBITRATION. Ah, written notice, the pleasant way to say, “Fuck you, buy a stamp.” It’s an inconvenient out, but it is an out. Otherwise you’re not only bound for the duration of your agreement, but until the end of time, thanks to the continuation clause at the end of the section. So your options are send a letter, deal with it, cancel your PlayStation Network account, or wait until such a time as a judge deems this illegal or unenforceable, which I can’t imagine will take too long. I’ve contact the PlayStation folks for comment, and will update the post should they respond. Update: Sony’s Patrick Seybold responded to my inquiry with the following: “This language in our TOS is common and similar to that of many other service related Terms of Service Agreements. It is designed to benefit both the consumer and the company by ensuring that there is adequate time and procedures to resolve disputes.” Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...
  8. Story by Brian Crecente @ Kotaku.com. The first thing I notice when I maneuver Sgt. Henry Blackburn, 1st Recon Marine, through the smoking door frame of the Tehran apartment complex isn’t the smoldering bodies lying on the ground nearby, it’s the piece of paper drifting through the room. I follow it with the tip of my gun, watching it drift around the run down entry way, past an old wooden chair, a slightly flattened box, chipped and dirty walls. Someone took the time to create this piece of imaginary paper and the path it takes as it floats on imaginary crossdrafts in a video game about a future fictional battlefield in Iran. I stop to jot down a few notes. “Make my way to the apartment entrance,” I write. “Kinda skudgy. Debris and trash lying around. Paper fluttering the air. Carpet on the floor is rolled up in one corner. Old mattress lying in the hallway.” Played on a Playstation 3, Battlefield 3 is a solid first-person shooter with tight controls, immersive sound and a hectic, driven storyline. But it’s the density of the game’s visuals that always stand out to me when I play this game. This morning I had a chance to play a snapshot of the game, a ten minute or so demonstration of a level called Operation Guillotine. Hours earlier Luke Plunkett played and enthused about his time with the very same demo in Tokyo. So when I take the PS3 controller in hand here in New York I decide to meticulously pick my way through the brief time with the game. Battlefield 3 takes place in a 2014 where the U.S. Marine Corps is fighting along the Iran-Iraq border. This particular missions opens up on what appears to be the evening of Oct. 31, 2014. Blackburn is hunkered down among a group of other members of Misfit 1-3 preparing to storm a city in Iran’s Tehran Province. The particular build I’m playing on is a couple of weeks old, but still more than a month newer than the one Plunkett and I played in Germany at Gamescom. The level opens with a low whistle. One of the other marines, looking with me at a massive city lit by bursts of gun fire, flak and explosions says, “That’s a big city. No gun truck yet.” “Nope,” another marine says. “The wheels of change move slow.” Seconds later we get the call to move down the hill, into the outskirts of the city and take the Khojir Apartment complex. These opening, controllable moments of the level don’t give me a chance to fire a single shot. Instead I’m running down a hill with a mortar in both hands. Explosions shake the ground as I run, some hit so close that I can feel the force of them pushing Blackburn slightly off course, like a boat hit by an unseen wave. Trees shudder in the wake of the blasts, some trees topple over, others burn, their leaves engulfed in flames, their trunks checkered with red embers. The screen is flaked with smudges of dirt and mud. Blackburn makes it to a clearing near a wall and drops the mortar on a spot, watching another marine drop a round into the tube. The round launches into the air, lighting the sky with a floating green flare. I run Blackburn to the wall, to a man with his back against it, and press a button to get a boost over. When Blackburn lands on the other side he’s got his weapon out. Down a hillside I can see marines in a firefight with opposition across a small gully. The enemy have taken up positions on a road, firing off pot shots at the men below. I drop Blackburn to a knee and sight down the gun. I fire off three bullets, taking out two enemies with head shots and apparently winging the third. I’m aiming for a third headshot when another marine takes him down. Moving Blackburn down the hillside I notice a group of enemies setting up much further down the gully, setting up an ambush along the path I’ll be taking once I get him to the floor below. I drop Blackburn to his knee again and take aim. I squeeze the trigger and run into the only disappointment I end up finding in the brief demo. The bullet seems to miss. I aim carefully and fire another headshot. Nothing. I pump out an entire clip in short bursts at the distant enemy. Nothing. Later I mention this to the public relations folks manning the demo. What’s the distance of rounds fired in Battlefield 3, I ask. The answer is a little vague and involves mentioning that the developers brought in ex-SAS operator Andy McNab to help with things like firing distance. In theory, rounds can’t go forever in the game. But I’m not convinced they lose trajectory over time. It felt more like they hit an invisible wall. EA says they’re looking into it for me. It was a very distant enemy and not something I suspect you’d run into much in the campaign, so it felt more like an oddity than a problem. Back in the game, I push Blackburn down the hill, into the gully and around the bend to face off with the enemies lying in wait. Running toward the enemies, a nearby blast momentarily blackens the screen, but I manage to take the enemies out quickly by switching to a shotgun. Running Blackburn up a set of stairs out of the gully culvert and within sight of the target apartment complex. But first there’s a group of enemy shooting at us from a sandbox foxhole. I take them out and proceed to the outskirts of the apartment complex. Running up the entrance stairs, I’m walking toward the doors when another marine runs up and tosses a grenade through a side window. The blast shoots three or four bodies through a wall of windows. A second later the door bursts open and a burning man runs into the clearing dropping to my feet before dying. I walk through the door and for a moment I’m distracted from the death, the gunshots, the timbre of war, by a floating piece of paper. I take my notes and then push Blackburn forward, down a dirty hall littered with newspapers, boxes, mattresses, furniture. I move him toward a door, noting for a second the bugs flying slowly around the light. At the door, the game tells me to press a button to knock it in. When I press it, the door kicks not in, but back toward me, knocking Blackburn on his ass. Time slows for an instant and I see another man, not a Marine, standing over me with a rifle, he’s moving it down toward me, when I hear a gunshot and he’s blown off his feet and back. As I fell I apparently pulled the trigger in surprise and hit the guy in the chest. Laying on my back I aim and take down two other men in the hall before getting back up. I run through the hallway, past the dead and through a back door. A humvee awaits me. On the ground nearby a marine is on his knees leaning over the prone body of another, slowly, methodically giving him CPR. I count to 15 chest compressions in my head before turning away and boarding the vehicle. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...

While summer is almost at an end, we wanted to tell you that the game is in the final part of development right now. We’re in beta and fixing bugs, and doing some last-minute optimizing where we can. We’ve updated EVERY one of 83 characters in the game, the vast majority of the environmental textures, and a lot of the environment geometry. We’ve also completely updated the user interface, added some easter eggs into the game, and a whole raft of unlockable extras -- some never seen before, and some rarely seen. More...

  18. Story by Mike Fahey @ Kotaku.com. After being sorely disappointed by the helicopter combat of Apache Air Assault last year, it’s nice to see there’s still some hope for the well-armed whirlybird enthusiast in Ace Combat: Assault Horizon. One thing becomes crystal clear while watching this video: This is not a realistic helicopter simulation. Apaches do not roll like that at low speeds. Not unless there’s electric guitar music in the background. Not that I’m complaining. If I wanted realism I’d have become a pilot. I just want to shoot things while hovering. Looks like Assault Horizon has me covered. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...

  20. Story by Michael McWhertor @ Kotaku.com. Career ninja Ryu Hayabusa is going to have a busy year, now that Team Ninja has officially unveiled Dead or Alive 5 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the form of this “pre-alpha” gameplay trailer. The star of Team Ninja’s Ninja Gaiden 3 is also prominently featured in our first look at Dead or Alive 5, which Tecmo Koei unveiled at this week’s Tokyo Game Show. Team Ninja describes the concept of DOA 5 as “fighting entertainment.” The console fighting game is expected in 2012. This is the fighting game series’ first entry on PlayStation console hardware since Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore, released on the PlayStation 2 in 2000. Team Ninja also released a “key visual” for the game, which appears to feature either Hitomi or Kasumi, one of Dead or Alive‘s many female fighters. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...
  21. Story by Stephen Totilo @ Kotaku.com. Grant Theft Auto IV. Red Dead Redemption. L.A. Noire. For the last few years every console game from Rockstar Games has been a big deal, creatively and commercially. Next up: Max Payne 3, whose debut trailer hit today and you can see right here. GTA is Rockstar’s baby. Red Dead and L.A. Noire were the types of games no other studio was brazen enough to try. Max? That’s a shooter. That’s the kind of game everyone is trying to make. So can Rockstar’s be special? Can it be great and important? Max Payne 3 will be out for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC in March of next year, nine years after the last Max Payne was released. Rockstar is developing without the involvement of original series creators Remedy. The trailer implies that Max’s signature bullet time is back and it sure looks like this game is going to be all about the gunplay and hard-boiled crime. Graphically, it looks superb. Max Payne fans, do you like what you see? And can you spot any small details us non-experts may not have caught? Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...
