  1. Nintendo UK has confirmed that there has been an instance of a possible phishing thread to Nintendo users who’ve account on the European Nintendo website and they’re currently investigating the matter. They’ve shit down some parts of the website as a precaution as they investigate this further. They’ve also put up a press release informing users about the same. They’ve also confirmed that the website didn’t store users’ sensitive information like credit card details, etc. Read the full press release below. We have learnt of a possible phishing threat to users of the European Nintendo website which we are currently investigating. The protection of our customers is our utmost priority and so we have taken the precaution of immediately shutting down some parts of this website until further notice. We would like to reassure you that we do not hold our customer’s bank, credit card or address details on the European Nintendo website and so this data is not at risk. Phishing is when someone attempts to find out your personal information, such as usernames and passwords, by pretending to be a trustworthy person or company in an electronic communication such as an email or via a website. The National Police in Spain have arrested three suspected members of the hacktivist group Anonymous, and according to the Spanish Policia Nacional website, one of the people arrested was hosting a server out of their home which supported DDoS attacks on businesses, websites, financial institutions and government agencies around the globe – as well as the website for the PlayStation Store. 3. The personal details of thousands of people have been stolen after hackers targeted British games developer Codemasters. The firm described the data theft as “significant” saying names, addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth were all taken on 3 June. However, it said that payment details were not compromised. The latest security breach comes in the midst of a spate of hacker attacks, including several against Sony. Codemasters said it took the compromised website offline as “as soon as the intrusion was detected”. Probe A subsequent investigation revealed that hackers managed to take the personal details of thousands of users, including names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth, passwords, IP addresses, XBox gamer tags, and biographies. In an e-mail sent to some of its customers, the firm advised users to “change any passwords you have associated with other Codemasters accounts. “If you use the same login information for other sites, you should change that information too. “Furthermore, be extra cautious of potential scams, via email, phone, or post that ask you for personal or sensitive information.” A spokesperson for Codemasters told BBC News that they still had no idea who targeted their sites, or how many people had their details compromised, although they said that it would affect tens of thousands of users. Codemasters said its website – codemasters.com – would remain offline “for the foreseeable future” with users being directed to its Facebook page. Brad Langford from Manchester contacted the BBC after receiving an e-mail from Codemasters, warning that his personal details may have been taken. He said: “Sensitive information such as date of birth, and some times postal address are tools to hackers who try and steal identities. “Does a company like Codemasters or any video game company really require such sensitive information? In my opinion – no.” Another Codemasters website user, Leanne Lee from Eastbourne, accused the company of being slow to respond. “I was a little shocked that it took them a week to let us all know and an impersonal e-mail with no follow up on their Facebook group either except a brief post in their discussion board section. “We should have been informed as soon as they had taken down the site,” she said. 4. Following a story that members of Anonymous were arrested by Spanish Police, and the personal details of thousands of people have been stolen after hackers targeted British games developer Codemasters, Gears of War developer Epic Games has become the latest high-profile games industry company to fall victim to a hacking attack, after its website and official forums were recently compromised. In an email to forum members, Epic Games’ founder Tim Sweeney revealed the extent of the security breach, and reassured users that no unencrypted, sensitive data was stolen. However, since encrypted password strings “may have been obtained”, forum passwords could be decrypted using “brute force” techniques. Basically, to be completely safe, you should probably change your Epic forums password if you were using it on any other site. For Epic’s part, it has reset all its forum users’ passwords as a precaution. Here’s the message that was sent out to forum members today – The hackers may have obtained the email addresses and encrypted passwords of forum users. Plaintext passwords weren’t revealed, but it’s possible that those passwords could be obtained by a brute-force attack on the encrypted passwords. Therefore, we have reset all passwords. Your new password at the bottom of this message. The Unreal Developer Network (UDN) hasn’t been compromised. Thankfully, none of our web sites ask for, or store, credit card information or other financial data. We’re sorry for the inconvenience, and appreciate everyone’s patience as we wrestle our servers back under control. So, nothing as serious as recent breaches at Sony and Codemasters, but still an embarrassing episode for a triple-A developer and technology provider like Epic. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...
  5. In “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2,” Infinity Ward’s answer to all the demands for co-op play was Spec Ops mode. The mode basically featured a variety of encounters set across sections of the single player game which you could play with another person, with varied objectives like “Get to Point A without being spotted” or “Defend this point using airstrikes for 5 minutes.” It was actually one hell of a fun mode, and it’s returning in “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3″ in the form of Spec Ops Mission. But there’s a new kind of Spec Ops mode in the new game: Survival. Spec Ops Survival is all about, well, survival. You and a buddy can play split screen or online, taking on wave after wave of invading soldiers across every multiplayer map in the game. It’s like Horde mode in “Gears of War 2,” but with one major twist: money. Killing enemies will earn you money which you can spend at computers scattered across the map. These computers let you buy guns and ammo, and you can upgrade the guns you already have, but there’s more than just weaponry. You can also purchase equipment and support. Equipment includes stuff like the Last Stand perk, which lets you revive yourself from being downed if you get a kill with your pistol. Other perks include more armor or placable auto turrets. There’s also air support to purchase. Guided missiles and air strikes are predictable additions, but you can also purchase a Delta Squad, a group of AI-controlled soldiers that fast-ropes down from a Blackhawk chopper to help out in the battle. Many of these upgrades require a certain Spec Ops level, separate from your multiplayer level, which goes up the more you play the mode. Meanwhile your enemies are getting harder and harder after each wave. Pretty soon you’re facing attack dogs with explosives strapped to them and juggernauts with riot shields. It gets pretty hairy pretty fast, but it’s the kind of mode that has the potential to never get old, as you’re constantly trying to beat your best wave. It’s also considerably more friendly to newbies, at least compared to the often harsh Zombies mode of “Black Ops.” Spec Ops Survival is another indication that “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3″ won’t be pulling any punches in this installment. Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer are still keeping true multiplayer close to the vest, but expect more info on that front to be released in the coming months. Modern Warfare 3 is out November 8 on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...
  6. We're very happy today to announce that SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs is now offering free maps and weapons to all PS Plus users! You might remember that we gave away the classic SOCOM map "Abandoned" and a couple of exclusive shotguns as an incentive to pre-order the game through GameStop. All PlayStation Plus users can now download "Abandoned" and the shotguns free for the next month! After a month of PlayStation Plus availability, "Abandoned" and the shotguns will continue to be available for SOCOM Pro members. But that's not all. When we announced SOCOM Pro shortly before SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs hit stores, we promised that we'd be delivering the oft-requested M16 and AK-47 shortly after release. We're happy today to not only say that they're almost here, but that they're being packaged alongside a set of new competitive multiplayer maps! Dubbed the SOCOM Pro Assault Pack, this bundle will be available as a free download exclusively to SOCOM Pro members and features three all-new competitive multiplayer maps: "Red Line", "Double Cross" and "Driftwood", as well as two fan-favorite weapons, the M16 and AK-47. The maps, inspired by missions from the single-player campaign, have been designed to feature tighter spaces with intense 8 vs. 8 matches in mind (not that 32-player skirmishes aren't a blast on all three maps). Assault Pack Maps: "Red Line" - A monorail depot highlights this small and highly war-torn urban location. "Double Cross" - A plane has crashed into a small mountain village, leaving wreckage and burning debris scattered throughout the area. "Driftwood" - A small fishing village with a tight layout results in intense close-quarter battles. Assault Pack Weapons: M16 - This highly accurate Spec Ops weapon is great at range and, with a suppressor gained at Mod Level 2, can be used in stealthier situations as well. AK-47 - This Insurgent weapon is difficult to control but inflicts a high amount of damage. It's also capable of holding a large amount of ammo at Mod 5, making a very deadly option for aggressive players. And last but certainly not least, don't forget that our Double XP bonus promotion is currently underway and affects not only every game type but both your player level and weapon progression! "Abandoned" and the pre-order shotguns are now available for free to all PlayStation Plus members while the SOCOM Pro Assault Pack will be available this month as a free download exclusively for SOCOM Pro members, so be sure to check back for more news in the coming weeks. SOCOM Pro comes free with new copies of SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs, and is also available for purchase on the PlayStation Store for $14.99. More...

But a good cinematic trailer works at least as a piece of cinema, derp, and so I’m pleased that I get to enjoy them. This trailer for Hitman Absolution definitely works on that level; it definitely provides an entertaining minute and 48 seconds of cinema. And it’s also sexy. Shower scene! 16. Gearbox Studios will be releasing a new game in the Brothers in Arms series, it was revealed today during Ubisoft’s E3 press conference. Fans of the old games may want to be wary, though: it sounds like the tone of the series is shifting slightly, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford saying that we’ll see soldiers whose favourite thing in the world is “kicking Nazi ass”, and you’ll be engaged in some “gleeful killing”. How gleeful? Your four squadmates will use electricity, a branding iron, tomahawks and a mini-gun reespectively. Meaning, it’s more Brothers in Arms: Inglorious Basterds than your daddy’s Brothers in Arms. The new game is called Brothers in Arms: Furious 4, and it’ll be out in 2012. 19. Courtesy Game Informer / EA press conferenceby Jeff Marchiafava on June 06, 2011 at 03:55 PM At EA’s press conference, DICE showed off the superior power of Battlefield 3′s Frostbite engine, announced a window for the multiplayer beta, and took a jab at Activision’s Call Of Duty: Elite pay service. After seeing the live demo for Battlefield 3, it’s no surprise that EA chose to end its press conference with DICE’s upcoming shooter. Before starting the demo, the DICE rep showed off some of the advancements of the Frostbite 2.0 engine. The improvements include better animation (which is particularly evident in player transitions), better destruction (the video showed teaser clips of entire buildings crumbling to pieces), a larger sense of scale, and improved rendering (I’m still not convinced that the smoke animations are being handled in real time; they’re gorgeous). Oh yeah, the audio is improved too, but DICE is already the king in the sound department, so that shouldn’t come as a surprise. DICE also took the time to mention its new Battlelog initiative, a set of social and stat-tracking tools that will be available online to Battlefield 3 players. The DICE rep stated with a smile that all of Battlelog’s options, which include finding online opponents, managing friends lists, and following your stats and achievements in real time, will be available to players free of charge — a clear shot across the bow at Activision’s recently announced pay service, Call Of Duty: Elite. Whether the two services will truly be comparable remains to be seen, but DICE has always been generous with the amount of statistics it offers players. As for the actual demo, most of it took place inside of a tank rolling across a desert that appeared to be larger than anything I’ve seen in a Battlefield game yet. Although the tank’s HUD will look familiar to Bad Company 2 players, the demo sold the sense of the player actually being inside of a tank: Several times the player transitioned between different cameras attached to the turret and an overhead drone, and looked on as another passenger loaded giant shells into the barrel. The demo ended in a shower of explosions, and it’s not an exaggeration to say that they were the prettiest explosions I’ve ever seen in a video game. If you can’t wait to play the game for yourself, the demo also revealed that the multiplayer beta will be available across multiple platforms starting in September; the game is scheduled to be released on October 25. We’ll be bringing you more on Battlefield 3 when we get some hands-on time with the game later this week. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...

  24. During Microsoft’s 2011 E3 press conference this morning, BioWare’s Dr. Ray Muzyka demonstrated how Microsoft’s Kinect could make the Xbox 360 version of Mass Effect 3 the one to own. Mass Effect‘s famous branching dialog system comes to life thanks to Kinect’s voice recognition. Each decision made can be made using your natural voice, unless you are ridiculously drunk or suffer from a serious speech impediment. Wouldn’t it be lovely if the game’s characters became confused and asked you to repeat yourself in those cases? Immersion a-go-go! Voice is for more than just climbing dialog trees, however. Issuing commands to your companions has never been as easy as it was on stage this morning. This is exactly what I wanted Kinect to do. Thanks, BioWare! Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...
