Star Spangled mess: Mavs’ Howard insults anthem

Buzz Up PrintDALLAS (AP)—The battered reputation of Josh Howard took another hit this week when an online video surfaced showing the Dallas Mavericks forward disrespecting the national anthem.

 

In a video posted on YouTube, Howard is shown on a football field at a charity flag football game. As the national anthem plays in the background, Howard approaches a camera and says: “‘The Star Spangled Banner’ is going on right now. I don’t even celebrate that (expletive). I’m black.â€

 

Howard’s agent, Jeff Schwartz, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment. Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks’ president of basketball operations, directed questions to team owner Mark Cuban, who in an e-mail declined to comment.

 

The incident is the latest off-court problem for Howard, a fifth-year pro from Wake Forest who averaged 19.9 points and seven rebounds last season. He was arrested in July when police said he was drag racing at 94 mph in a 55 zone. A court appearance was scheduled for next week.

 

Howard was criticized last season for saying in a radio interview during a first-round playoff series against New Orleans that he occasionally smokes marijuana. Later that same series, he angered coach Avery Johnson by throwing himself a birthday bash after a Game 4 loss to the Hornets.

Make him pay for what exactly? Yeah he said he doesn't respect the Star Spangled Banner but thats not against the law. It was an extremely stupid thing to say for sure but there is nothing about the situation that warrants a fine. A suspension maybe for 2 games tops but nothing will happen except his jerseys will sella little less for a month or so.

I doubt a suspension is warranted either.. im pretty sure there is no NBA rule about it either. :-\

 

It is a free country & he is free to do whatever he wants in this case, but i would think/hope his team will think twice when it comes time to resign his contract.

They'll resign him no question he's too valuable to the Mavs.

First off, I am going to start off by saying that I am not racist and this post does not warrant that.

 

This guy is the reason we still have racist problems. Well, not this guy, particularly, but guys like him. Know what I mean? I mean, actually what he is saying is, I dont practice being an American because Im black. Its rediculous. Its a shame that people that act like this make more money than ANY of us ever will. Maybe this guy should go to one of the African, war ridden, countries and see if he starts practicing being an American then.
