Don’t touch that remote! Danny Phantom, Invader Zim, Rocko, Powdered Toastman, and XJ9 battle Gods in the all-new Nickelodeon x Smite crossover event going live July 12! After the success of Smite’s previous crossovers with Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, we’re going all out this time to bring you your favorite characters from across Nickelodeon’s roster. Bringing these iconic Nickelodeon characters into the Battleground of the Gods was an incredible experience for our team, and I’m so proud of how these skins turned out. Play Video Wait… Danny Phantom in Smite? Yup, you heard that right! Every Classic Nickelodeon character materializes in Smite as a dazzling skin for an existing Smite God: Danny Phantom Janus, Rocko Danzburou, XJ9 Freya, Powdered Toastman Gilgamesh, and Invader Zim Cupid. Plus, players can unlock a dozen free Nickelodeon cosmetic rewards like the meme-worthy smashing Global Emote or Gir Jump Stamp, just by playing Smite games and completing quests. Why Nickelodeon? “Excited” doesn’t even begin to explain how our team reacted when the news broke about the Nickelodeon crossover. Our team dove into the project with animated enthusiasm, developing imaginative ideas and amazing content. While we’ve worked with the Paramount team before, this crossover covered so many different generations of childhood television that it brought up a lot of nostalgia for the team. We hope that our community will experience that same feeling of nostalgia when they see some of their favorite Nickelodeon characters realized in Smite. This is our first crossover that includes characters from multiple completely different shows, which presented an interesting challenge to the team. For example: how do you turn a feisty musket-toting Tanuki (Danzaburou) into a shirt-wearing, tv-watching Wallaby (Rocko)? By turning the musket into a remote control, of course! We wanted to design every character in a way that did their Nickelodeon origins justice. From the Gods of Mt. Olympus to the Heroes of Nickelodeon… Smite has come a long way since its PS4 launch in 2016, going from 17 gods to now over 121 in total. As the roster of deities grew, so did the number of pantheons in the game. At first, the precedent was set: Smite was the Battleground of the Gods – and as such; we’d only be including actual Gods and Goddesses from times past. As the game matured, we started to push back against these boundaries. The team decided that King Arthur, from Arthurian myth, would be an ideal addition to Smite. Sure, he’s not a god, but he is a figure of myth. We followed up the Arthurian Pantheon with Cthulhu, the legendary tentacled Great Old One. Smite’s lore is simple: If people believe in a God, if they talk about it, they make it real – even more modern entries like Cthulhu. These legendary figures from history and mythology brought a breath of creative freedom to the Battlegrounds – giving us the chance to include even more characters that didn’t fit the “standard” mold. And as we looked toward expanding our collection of characters in Smite, we wanted to stay authentic to the game. why you’ll see all these crossovers as Skins and not as God additions. But we think these crossovers resonate with our community because this idea of crossovers is at the core of Smite. And we love welcoming new communities that are as passionate about these great IPs as we are about the pantheons of Smite. Smite’s First Nickelodeon Crossover: Avatar: The Last Airbender The first Nickelodeon crossover to hit Smite was the legendary Smite x Avatar: The Last Airbender crossover. The Titan Forge Games team is full of diehard Avatar fans and was overjoyed to bring the Avatar world to life in Smite. This world-bending crossover event saw Aang, Zuko, Korra, and Naga face their toughest challenge yet: the Battleground of the Gods. This project included many technical challenges that the Titan Forge team had to overcome. For example: How do we make Merlin, a full-size adult, into a child (Aang, from Avatar: The Last Airbender)? Merlin was chosen for Aang because of his use of different elements. It felt like it would fit best for Aang’s Character- but Merlin looked nothing like Aang. Modeling, rigging, and animation departments had to collaborate to make the skin a success. Aang was referred to internally as a “god-Level” skin. He doesn’t share any of Merlin’s base assets. The only thing that is similar to Merlin is the timing of the abilities. He was created from the ground up, completely from scratch. Every single part of the Aang skin was created entirely new so that we could make sure that Aang was represented in the best possible way. A bunch of us here on the Titan Forge team are huge fans of the show, so we were able to easily find references to fit into the game. Play Video We followed up on Avatar with another Nickelodeon classic: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Featuring Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo; this crossover was full of incredible content from the classic animated show. Cowabunga! Play Video More Smite Crossover Hits: Ruby Rose, Blake Belladonna, Weiss Schnee, and Yang Xiao Long from RoosterTeeth’s hit anime series RWBY was the first crossover to crash into Smite as a resounding success. Our players loved the inclusion of these bombastic huntresses and clamored for more crossover content. Smite slipped into the Upside-Down with the Smite x Stranger Things crossover; which included four fan-favorite characters from Stranger Things: Eleven, Hopper, The Mind Flayer, and The Demogorgon. Play Video Transformers rolled out onto the Battleground of the Gods in 2021, with Optimus Prime, Megatron, and Starscream. Soon after that, the Titan Forge team broke the mold yet again with the Monstercat Crossover. This bass-pounding crossover used music to help define a variety of EDM-inspired skins, like Crab Rave Khepri. Quickly following up on that endeavor, Smite released their Rambo crossover in April 2022. Our most recent crossover (before today’s Nickelodeon news) was an entirely new kind of crossover: Slipknot. This massive crossover included nine new skins for the Gods of Smite, accompanied by a head-banging Music Pack created with original Slipknot anthems. All of these projects have culminated in our newest incredible collaboration : The Smite x Nickelodeon crossover event, and we’re so excited for players to dive in starting July 12. Greetings Travelers! This is your Genshin Impact dev team, inviting you into the summertime of Teyvat with Genshin Impact’s Version 2.8, Summer Fantasia, coming on July 13! The Golden Apple Archipelago is once again open with a different look, bringing a variety of plots, stories, challenges, and rewards. Get ready to delve into realms you’ve never set foot in before and discover a different side of your longtime companions. Then, a year after Kaedehara Kazuha’s first arrival, the wandering samurai seems to want to deepen his friendship with you while bringing the first chapter of his personal Story Quest, as well as his close friend Shikanoin Heizou. Summertime Odyssey Compared to the previous island adventures, this year’s Summertime Odyssey big event aims to bring even more as the Golden Apple Archipelago sees a drastic makeover. Fresh landscapes and lots of new stories can be found throughout the event; including richer rewards like a great number of new treasure chests. Players will also have the chance to obtain the four-star character Fischl and her newest outfit, both which are available for a limited time. Travelers visiting the Golden Apple Archipelago this summer can expect some serious explorations, as each island has been transformed through different themes and puzzles. Xinyan, Fischl, Kazuha, and Mona traveling with us also seem to have their secret connections to certain areas, where you may run into mysterious realms with danger and treasures. Sailing is always the highlight of island recreations, and this summer you can either speedrun with your Waverider in the specially designed course or set sail with friends online. For example, the Reminiscent Regimen is a co-op-specific event with three different game modes. The Convoy mode requires all participants to escort a large raft to its destination, while Raid requires players to pilot their own Waverider to board floating platforms and take out enemies. In Descent mode, players will have to battle their way down from a high platform in the sky. Be careful, or you and your teammates may find yourselves struggling while airborne. If you would like to take a leisurely stroll along the beach, remember to pick up the special conches during the Resonating Visions event. By collecting the conches, you can listen to intriguing tales and stories, and redeem Fischl’s all-new outfit with a certain number of conches. All in all, this year’s Golden Apple Archipelago will not only give seasoned Travelers a familiar vibe, but also introduces plenty of fresh exploration mechanics and storylines for everyone! Bonding with Friends While you have a good time on the islands with other characters, Version 2.8 allows you to bond with even more friends, old and new. Diluc, Kaedehara Kazuha, and the brand-new playable four-star character Shikanoin Heizou will show up in the latest events and stories. As one of the early playable characters, Diluc will receive a brand-new outfit. The outfit, featuring a distinctive look, new idle animation, and new effects, will soon be available in the Shop. Meanwhile, its backstory and a trial stage can be found in the Hidden Strife challenge event. After joining the game for over a year, Kaedehara Kazuha’s Story Quest has finally arrived. Coming from a renowned family of swordsmiths in Inazuma, Kazuha’s story seems to be related to a mysterious sword and a duel. You will find out more in his Story Quest, Acer Palmatum Chapter. Kazuha’s friend Shikanoin Heizou will also make his debut in the upcoming version. Heizou is a young genius detective of the Tenryou Commission who is active in the frontline in the fight against criminal masterminds. Despite his free and unruly nature, Kujou Sara thinks highly of his abilities in crime solving. You may find out more, and even join his work in his Hangout Event. In combat, Heizou is our first melee catalyst user. Though he wields a catalyst and carries an Anemo Vision, his Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst are all unarmed techniques just like his Normal Attack. His Elemental Skill will launch a Heartstopper Strike, and charging his Elemental Skill can grant him special “Declension” stacks. Once Heizou reaches a certain amount of Declension stacks, his Elemental Skill’s DMG and AoE increase. His Elemental Burst will unleash a Windmuster Kick, pulling in nearby enemies and dealing AoE Anemo DMG. If the enemies are affected by the Hydro, Pyro, Cryo, or Electro element, a delayed follow-up explosion will occur, dealing damage of the corresponding elemental type. Furthermore, Heizou can decrease sprinting Stamina consumption for your own party members. Shikanoin Heizou will be available in Kaedehara Kazuha’s and Klee’s rerun event wishes in the early phase of Version 2.8. Yoimiya’s rerun will be available in the later phase of the update. More Bonuses With Version 2.8, more events and rewards are also waiting for you to explore. For instance, with the Evermotion Mechanical Painting event, you can solve a special puzzle game and get a new Furnishing for your Serenitea Pot. Last but not least, a reminder that the PlayStation Plus Pack, available to PlayStation Plus members at no additional cost, will be refreshed after Version 2.8 goes live. Hello everyone! I’m Andreas Firnigl, CEO and founder of Nosebleed Interactive. We’ve been developing our retro arcade / part sim management game, Arcade Paradise, for the past three years, and I’m super excited (and relieved!) to reveal that the game will launch on PS4 and PS5 on August 11 – You can also wishlist the game on PS5 now. Play Video Insert Coin Arcade Paradise is a 90’s themed arcade management simulator where every game is fully playable. You play as Ashley, a 19-year-old college drop out. Tasked by your father, played marvelously by the award-winning Doug Cockle, (you may know him as Geralt from The Witcher series) you manage the day-to-day tasks of running the family’s King Wash laundromat business. Things start to get interesting when you discover that those dusty old arcade machines lying in the back room have more business potential than the actual laundromat. Ka-ching! Ashley’s imagination runs wild and you embark on a journey that takes you from dreary dead-end job to arcade empire as you experience what it’d be like to run your own games arcade. There are over 35 fully playable arcade games to unlock within the game, which have all been built from the ground up, and each game has its own gameplay, stories, missions and high scores to set. From a development point of view, this gave us quite a few challenges! (we’ll save that for another blog discussion, tho). Wash, Profit, Rinse, Repeat I’m excited to also be able to give you a first look at our new release date trailer, The Grind, which showcases the core gameplay loop. Revealing how managing profits, grinding through, (very video-gamey) apparently mundane, (but actually weirdly enjoyable) chores, allows players to build and expand their very own arcade empire. Unblocking the toilet, peeling gum off floors, doing the laundry, and picking up litter, all act as mini games, from which you can reinvest profits into the arcade. In Arcade Paradise you’ll need to juggle laundromat management and arcade management, and you’ll need to play the games in order to maximize their profitability. It’s safe to say the road to Arcade Paradise won’t be easy, but we think it’ll be super fun. Relive 90’s Gaming Nostalgia If you grew up in 90s like me, you’ll probably know and appreciate just how popular arcades were. As a teenager, I was obsessed with video games and skateboarding and music. We were inspired by classic arcade games from past 3 decades – the game takes you through the 8, 16, and 32-bit eras, with inspirations up to the original PlayStation era – but we’ve also tried to add a modern take, so each game feels authentic but in reality, they are much more modern. For us, Arcade Paradise is a celebration of the greatest ever gaming era, in fact the game is so nostalgia-inducing you can almost feel the sticky arcade carpet. Block Rockin’ Beats As with video games, we are also big fans of music and in particular music from the 90s. It was an amazing era for music, not least because of its creativity and range of amazing genres. The soundtrack to Arcade Paradise is inspired by some of the greatest music of that decade, providing a thumping hi-energy accompaniment via the in-game jukebox. To maintain this level of complexity and high standard of performance which PlayStation players have come to expect, the team have developed console exclusive optimisations to best use the hardware – such as completely reworking how the game previews in-progress constructions, and how they are displayed in-game; overhauling how the game handles memory and optimising it for consoles. As you play and your colony grows, the game is required to simulate more and more elements, so we wanted to ensure that you have the smoothest experience possible. Designing a management simulator user interface for consoles One of the first challenges we faced with RimWorld Console Edition was how we were going to translate all of the functionality from RimWorld’s interface to PlayStation 4 systems. RimWorld features an extremely functional menu with hundreds of construction, management and combat tools required to play the game. Whilst RimWorld’s UI is perfect for mouse and keyboard, it required a full makeover and rework for the DualShock 4 (and DualSense wireless controller via PS5 backwards compatibility). Retaining the level of detail for a sit-back couch experience without compromising the depth of world building and narrative generation was always going to be difficult, but we are excited to provide console players with an intuitive and attractive user interface, without sacrificing the core functionality of the original game. Every design decision was made with speed of action first and foremost – no unnecessary animations or ornate flourishes, just clear readability that elevates story and player controls. Translating vast functionality for a controller Our control scheme is built around input modifiers and context sensitive menus which change depending on what you have selected, adding a bunch of flexibility and gives us more value and scope with the number of inputs we must utilise. RimWorld Console Edition’s interface is designed from the ground up to work with controllers and the number of inputs available to the player. The majority of the user interface is navigable using the triggers, allowing players easy access to all key actions with the tap of a finger. Every menu has been designed with this in mind, and everything is quickly accessible with simple inputs, creating a quick, smooth and intuitive experience. We hope you’re amped up because starting tomorrow Jane Foster’s The Mighty Thor will be playable in Marvel’s Avengers as a free update! The arrival of the Mighty Thor adds a third flying warrior to Marvel’s Avengers for new team compositions and fresh co-op play, bringing the roster to 11 playable heroes, including Spider-Man only on PlayStation. So what’s the scoop on Jane’s story? In Marvel’s Avengers Jane is torn from an alternate timeline through a rift in space-time caused by Tachyon Anomalies. In her original timeline, Jane became the Goddess of Thunder when she took up the mantle from Thor, who in his grief gave up Mjolnir after the A-Day tragedy. Jane Foster is voiced by the talented Zehra Fazal, known for her work across video games and television. In addition to collectable intel documents and character banter, the Mighty Thor’s story is told through a an electric in-game animatic – Marvel’s Avengers – The Mighty Thor: Out of Time – illustrated by veteran Marvel artist Takeshi Miyazawa. So how does Jane play? The Mighty Thor possesses all the strength and power of a God of Thunder, but with human touches all her own. Jane’s unique talents with Mjolnir begin with her new intrinsic ability All-Mother’s Blessing, and God Tempest, her new Overcharge. All-Mother’s Blessing builds its overcharge meter with melee attacks. Once full, she unleashes her God Tempest, which increases ranged hammer damage and creates shockwaves with each hit. Her finesse with Mjolnir shines through in several new features including Quick Fire, a new ranged attack combo that allows the Mighty Thor to make a second more powerful ranged attack by timing her next throw. The Seek and Pin upgrade to her Ranged Attack empowers Mjolnir to seek out and pin enemies without needing to aim. Jane’s expert control extends to melee strikes with Earth’s Finest, which adds a hammer toss to her light attack combo for extra reach. Jane also puts her own spin on classic Odinson moves like Headstrong. She relies on her Thunderkick – a brutal front kick – to send enemies flying. The Mighty Thor’s kit culminates in The All-Weapon, her brand-new Ultimate Heroic. Drawn from the pages of her Thor and Valkyrie runs, Jane sends Mjolnir to seek and destroy nearby enemy targets. Meanwhile, she calls forth the All-Weapon Undrjarn to protect her, reducing all damage taken while smiting her foes. The All-Weapon has a full set of specializations and allows you to customize Mjolnir’s strikes, making them faster and channeling a powerful shock status against nearby enemies. As a kid born in the mid-80s, a lot of my childhood was spent watching cartoons, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was my favorite morning show. I loved everything about it: The action, the colorful characters, the over-the-top voice acting, and of course, the music! TMNT was just everywhere. It was a huge part of my youth, so I was over the moon when this opportunity came along. The first theme I composed for TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge was Big Apple 3 PM, and it was born out of pure excitement when I was first invited to score the project. Cyrille Imbert of Dotemu sent me some footage of early gameplay without music, and as I watched it repeatedly, with the biggest smile on my face, I began hearing a song for it inside my head. I immediately got to work and after an hour or so, I had a draft to show the Dotemu and Tribute. This first draft was a basic proposition for the soundtrack’s general aesthetic, which I thought was very in line with the game’s philosophy – the goal was to dive into the golden era of TMNT, gather up some of the most memorable elements from all of the different media available then, and bring them back in a creative and modernized package. It would contain lots of fun references for that sweet nostalgia, but also be its own thing and introduce fun new concepts to the series, all within that ’80s and ‘90s palette of genres and sounds. Fortunately, everyone was on board with the style, and thus began this musical journey! I fleshed the song out a bit for early integration so we could test it in-game, and this is what that sounded like: It immediately sounds fuller by introducing a bunch of new elements and a new section. At this point, I had already started some of the other songs on the soundtrack, and because those were a bit longer, I felt like I should extend this one a bit for the sake of consistency. I added a bit of a break around 1:09 that allows for the song to breathe for a moment before looping back into action. At this point, the guitars were still computer-generated, and the guitar solo was still non-existent. Instrumentation was key for bridging classic and modern for this soundtrack. It sounds like a game straight out of the early 90’s, but in high fidelity, which was impossible then due to hardware limitations. Many of the sounds used in video game tunes those days were sampled from popular romplers, which were also a big staple of Pop music (editor’s note – A rompler is a synthesizer featuring stock sound presets based on audio samples). I figured that by employing those types of timbres I could emulate the sound aesthetic of that era in an authentic way, even beyond videogames. I felt like the composition was solid, but the song still sounded a bit thin to me, so I called up Jonny Atma to lay down some guitars. I sent him a reference track, and asked if he could improvise a guitar solo at the emptier section around 1:19, and on the next day he hit me back with this: When I showed the teams this version, everyone was raving about the energy and weight that Jonny’s guitar added to the song. Happy with their reaction, I went back to the lab and spent a few more hours polishing and fine-tuning as many details as I could, before exporting it for the final processing step. I worked closely with talented sound engineer and composer Andrew One, who had mixed and mastered my OST for Streets of Rage 4’s DLC one year prior. After a few days, this was the result of our combined efforts: I hope the readers enjoyed this brief look into the process of creating this soundtrack. It was a privilege and a true pleasure to be involved in this project, and to work with so many talented and passionate artists around the world to craft this labor of love. Cowabunga! Hi everyone, I’m Sébastien Renard, Lead Writer on A Plague Tale: Requiem. Three years after the series’ first title: A Plague Tale: Innocence, we thought it’d be a good time to take a look at the evolution of our main characters. In the upcoming sequel, Requiem, Amicia and Hugo de Rune are at a turning point in their lives. Play Video How have Amicia and Hugo changed since Innocence? The brother-sister relationship was central to Innocence. Amicia and Hugo didn’t know each other well at the beginning of the game, and along with their survival, their complicated but thriving affection for each other was at stake. They both try to find their place, with Amicia growing more and more protective of her brother. The game ends with this existing relationship for the next chapter to build on. The idea for the sequel was to keep these themes alive while introducing new ones, each with their own set of conflicts and emotions. Requiem introduces a more mature Amicia. She has come to terms with her introverted self, and she has become more playful and keen to bond with her brother. Our heroes now call for a more profound treatment, and this will bring forth situations of a new type. Their inner frailties will be their next challenge. Threatened by their own selves Hugo’s powers are developing — he will struggle to keep them under control and sometimes they’ll overthrow him. Although they will be key for him to escape dangerous situations, the young boy will need to resist the risk of giving in to his powers. On Amicia’s side, her fighting skills honed in Innocence will backfire on her. She won’t have any option but to take on this role that only she can assume — but she will have to face the traumatic emotions that come with it. Our characters are not superhuman, and our two protagonists will pay the price that becoming a hero entails. Thankfully, they will get help along the way. Unlike the band of companions-in-misfortune that Amicia and Hugo formed in the first game, Requiem will introduce new characters, adults with more confidence and experience, who will guide the two siblings through their personal struggles. Illusory paradise and dangerous encounters Our heroes will face their inner conflicts together with external ones. To begin with, they will discover a new part of France, Provence, which will offer new sights and sensations, leading them to believe in a kind of paradise. Unfortunately, the harsh medieval reality inevitably catches up, and their hopes vanish before they can get too comfortable. The roads of Provence are unpredictable, and danger is everywhere: mercenary bands, ambushes, and the ever merciless nature of their times — that simple villagers make no exception to. Let’s not forget the rats and the Bite, another trauma they will have to keep facing as the world crumbles around them. The plague tragically keeps following them. Moving on from Innocence: showing initiative It’s clear that their greatest hardships are linked with Hugo’s powers, and they will finally realize what that means. In the same process, they start taking the lead in the action. In Innocence, Amicia and Hugo had a passive role in how the events play out: with the Inquisition after them, they only get to react to assaults. When Requiem begins, no one is after the de Runes. This allows them to go and face adversity head on. Whispers of an island linked to Hugo’s fate will have them move on to more, unexpected territories. Attention Gran Turismo players! The June update for Gran Turismo 7 arrives today June 22 at 11:00pm PDT* (June 23 at 7am BST / 3pm JST). Play Video Suzuki V6 Escudo Pikes Peak Special ’98 Returning to the series for the first time in a decade, the legendary Suzuki V6 Escudo Pikes Peak Special ’98 is a monster machine developed specifically to compete in the most extremely harsh conditions for any race car in conquering the treacherous hill climb. The frame is of an all-new design using an aluminum space frame. To maximize performance, the powertrain has been extensively modified, moving the engine from the base model’s front position to a midship configuration. The fully tuned 2.5L V6 engine has been fitted with twin turbochargers allowing it to produce a maximum 981 BHP and 95 kgfm maximum torque. Suzuki Vision Gran Turismo (Gr.3 Version) This model is a realization of Suzuki’s motor sporting prowess, extensively tuned to meet Gr.3 regulations. The base Suzuki VGT uses the 1,340 cm³ (1,340 cc) Hayabusa engine linked to 3 high-power electric motors on an all-wheel drive powertrain. This Gr.3 version however has been changed to a simple front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout with a V8 twin-turbo powerplant comprised of 2 Hayabusa engine blocks for a total displacement of 2,680 cm³ (2,680 cc). In this form, the monstrous engine can produce a maximum 577 BHP at an astoundingly high 10,000 rpm. Compared to the base model, the design aesthetics have been altered to achieve increased downforce, featuring an enlarged front spoiler as well as the addition of front and rear diffusers, a GT wing and air ducting on the bonnet. 1932 Ford Roadster In the world of customized cars, the US is often number one in terms of quality, volume, and genre. The oldest genre of these, now an iconic part of American culture is the Hot Rod. This was a movement that originated in the 1930s, where the Ford Model T and the later Model A’s and Model B’s were heavily modified by their owners. Extensive exterior modifications were performed on these cars such as removing wheel arches, bonnets and cutting the body to make chop-top convertibles. More and powerful engines were then added to the cars as technology improved over the years. Watkins Glen International Nicknamed “The Glen”, Watkins Glen International is a historic road course found in New York State, roughly 260 miles northwest of New York City, which opened in 1956 and is surrounded by rolling hills. The first half of the track comprises high-speed sections with mid to high-speed corners, with the latter half features tight, technical turn combinations. The undulating track is also narrow which encourages high-intensity racing battles. The back straight leads to a high-speed chicane, immediately followed by a right turn into a banking section (Outer Loop), which is one of the track’s primary highlights. From there, the long course will run into the technical section known as “The Boot”, while the ‘Short Course’ bypasses this segment entirely. For those eager to know yet more about the much-anticipated Final Fantasy XVI, your wait is over. Like us, you’ve likely pored over every piece of text, every screenshot and trailer since the game was originally announced back in 2020. We’ve had the first information about its world and characters, and most recently, a closer look at gameplay as well as that all-important release window. Producer Naoki Yoshida has guided us through all three here on PS.Blog. Play Video Now, we’re able to quiz Yoshida-san to pull back the curtain (a little) on the game’s development. Here, we get his personal perspective on, amongst other things, answering the call to create the latest mainline Final Fantasy title, developing for PlayStation 5, and his favorite Summon. Let’s get to it. Naoki Yoshida, Producer of Final Fantasy XVI PlayStation.Blog: What do you think are the core tenets of a Final Fantasy game? Did the development team look to past titles in the series for guidance or inspiration when building FFXVI? Naoki Yoshida: I’d say the core elements of a Final Fantasy game are a deep story, deep gameplay, cutting-edge graphics and cutting-edge sound… as well as chocobos and moogles, of course. In the 35-year history of the Final Fantasy series, it’s always been the guiding policy that each new installment has to be the very best game that the director at the time can put together, no matter how the game world, the characters, or the battle system might change. Because of this, gamers and Final Fantasy fans around the world have very different ideas of what a Final Fantasy game should be—but to me, it’s those elements I mentioned. “Each new installment has to be the very best game that the director at the time can put together” When it came to deciding what to do with Final Fantasy XVI, I thought back to when I played the original Final Fantasy, and remembered how I felt like I was playing the leading role in a motion picture. I wanted to recapture that feeling in XVI, but with state-of-the-art game design and the latest in modern technology. The whole development team, under the directorship of Hiroshi Takai, has come together to make that dream a reality, so I hope you all look forward to it. PSB: Thinking back to the beginning of the FFXVI project, do you remember how the conversation went when you were asked to produce this new mainline entry? What was your initial reaction? NY: I said “Thanks, but I have my hands full with Final Fantasy XIV, so let me think about it.” I was truly honored that the company would choose my section, Creative Business Unit 3, to be responsible for making the next entry in the FF series. But, as you probably know, I’m already the producer and director of Final Fantasy XIV. I was worried that if I took on the directorship of XVI, too, fans of both games would have good reason to believe I wasn’t giving either project my full attention. To ensure that the development of XVI didn’t affect that of XIV, we picked out a very small group of core team members to start with, and over the course of several years, slowly and carefully transitioned them across to start work on the new game, until we had the full team assembled. PSB: How was the composition of the rest of FFXVI’s development team decided? NY: Being the director of a Final Fantasy game is a tougher job than most people imagine. Not only do you have the expectations of the fans and the media to live up to, but you’re constantly under pressure from the development team, too. You always have to be up for the challenge. I’d worked with Hiroshi Takai for many years, and he’s one of my most trusted colleagues, as well as a veteran developer, so I asked him if he would take on the role—and thankfully, he agreed. That’s how it all started. We brought two other members into the group, and between the four of us, we sketched out the core concepts of the game and its world, as well as the key themes that we wanted to put across, and started work on writing the main storyline. Later, we brought a few more members on board to take charge of the battle system and the graphics, and through a process of building on what worked and scrapping what didn’t, we gradually moved towards full-scale development. And all the while, in the back of my mind I was thinking “Please don’t let this impact on Final Fantasy XIV!” PSB: Talking specifically about the story writing process (not narrative details), how has it felt switching from a multi-year, multi-expansion arc to a self-contained, standalone story? NY: I’ve worked on games that aren’t MMORPGs before, so it wasn’t a major stumbling block. Plus, each new Final Fantasy XIV expansion has a similar level of new story content as a standalone RPG, or maybe even more, so it wasn’t too different to my work on that game. The only major difference I noticed was that, if I wanted to foreshadow something, I had to pay it off a lot faster! PSB: Every Final Fantasy logo conveys a core theme of the game in some way. How does the Final Fantasy XVI logo do this? NY: Yoshitaka Amano’s design for the logo is full of meaning, as you’d expect. It shows two Eikons facing off against each other… and the rest, for now, is a secret. PSB: Following the debut of FFXVI’s new “Dominance” trailer during State of Play, we finally have a release window! Where will the development team be focusing their efforts during this final year before the game launches? NY: Right now, the game is fully playable from start to finish, but we have a lot of voiceover in several languages that still need to be recorded. Final Fantasy XVI is a very action-oriented game, so we’re also doing a lot of playtesting to fine-tune the difficulty levels, as well as putting the final touches on the cutscenes, and going through a full-scale debugging process. A year is a short time in game development, so we’re all straining at the bit to get it over the line. PSB: It’s now been confirmed that there are some Final Fantasy XIV dev team members (including you!) working on FFXVI — do you have specific systems or processes in place to ensure teams can perform to the best of their ability across two tonally distinct games without burning themselves (or yourself) out? I imagine lots of work on XVI must have been happening around the same time as final FFXIV Endwalker preparations… NY: I wouldn’t call it a system per se, but the project managers and assistant producers on both projects do a great job planning out my schedule to make sure I’m not overwhelmed. I wouldn’t have a clue how to keep myself organized without them! Any decisions regarding the overall management of the division I try to leave in the hands of the upper management as much as possible, which allows me to focus on my work as producer and director. Rather than a specific system or a process, it’s a sense of teamwork that we’ve built up over the years. Masayoshi Soken has his own people in the Sound department who handle his schedule for him. What’s your favorite Summon in Final Fantasy XVI, and why? NY: It’s got to be Bahamut for me. He doesn’t just destroy his enemies, but the ground they’re standing on—even whole planets! Every time he appears, you know something incredible is about to happen. It helps that he’s a big part of the story of Final Fantasy XIV, too. As for the Summons that appear in Final Fantasy XVI, I do have my favorite, but I can’t tell you right now as it’s bound to result in a lot of speculation. What I can tell you is that they’re all as cool as hell! PSB: The new “Dominance” trailer also teased more of the game’s music. With Masayoshi Soken now confirmed as FFXVI’s composer, can you share any insight into the trailer’s music? Was the music we heard in the trailer made just for this beat, or does it include themes and leitmotifs we can expect to hear in full in the game? NY: Not all of the music is finished yet, but Soken’s the kind of composer who likes to repurpose parts of the in-game soundtrack in trailers. I’m sure you’ll have heard some of the themes and motifs that will make their way into the in-game music in the latest trailer. You’ll have to invite Soken for an interview to find out more—but please, only once he’s finished working on the soundtrack! PSB: What are some opportunities afforded by the PlayStation 5 hardware that would not have been possible in previous generations? NY: With the boost in processing power, we can obviously make the graphics even richer than we could before, but it’s the super-fast loading times that really impress me. Hello, my name is Lorenzo Redaelli and I’d like to tell you about how we ported Milky Way Prince – The Vampire Star to PlayStation, and specifically how some PS5 exclusive features let us enhance the experience. I will also tell you a bit about my inspirations for the game and its look! The relationship of the two protagonists, Sune and Nuki, is often mediated by their phones. In the native PS5 version we use the controller speakers and haptic feedback to emulate vibrations and voice messages, and further use the haptic feedback to enhance the way the game displays Nuki’s emotions through the scenes. Additionally, I can finally show the drawings at their original resolution without compromises, with the game keeping a steady 120fps, visible in the subtle camera movements and transitions. In terms of inspirations, I took from the Japanese animation director Kunihiko Ikuhara, a master of symbolist storytelling and skilled in representing complicated and sometimes incommunicable concepts in a simple way. His Mawaru Penguindrum anime series was my most important reference: the settings as shown in the game are drawn from the essential and minimal scenography of Robert Wilson and from the smoky and decadent atmospheres of director Bernardo Bertolucci. For the character design, I explored Masaaki Yuasa’s super-flat and distorted style, and Suehiro Maruo’s plastic / neoclassical poses. I decided music would be the only sound clue to mood, atmosphere, and character development. In Milky Way Prince, music is as important as silence, so the verbal communication of the characters gradually disappears, and finding a solution to a problem becomes increasingly difficult. This was a homage to Michelangelo Antonioni’s films on incommunicability. The soundtrack is very much inspired by the retro aesthetics of artists such as Lana Del Rey and Arctic Monkeys and by the evocative noir atmospheres of Angelo Badalamenti. Featuring the sport’s stunning new cars, F1 22 delivers a new handling model that recreates the intense wheel-to-wheel racing that’s had us on the edge of our seats so far in the 2022 Formula 1 season. The main innovations regarding the PS5 controller are the haptic feedback and the adaptive triggers in F1 22. Learn more about some of the PS5 features below. Haptic feedback Through utilizing the PS5 DualSense controller’s haptics, the feeling of both collisions and surfaces has been greatly enhanced. It gives the ability to communicate individual chunks of surface debris and creates a far more immersive experience to represent the car on a particular part of the track. Most notably, the sensation can be localized to the left or right. A great example of this is when just the left wheels of the player’s car are driven aggressively over a kerb, the feedback is felt exclusively through the left side of the controller, adding to the realism. DualSense controller speaker Taking advantage of the PS5 DualSense controller speaker, the player can hear their race engineer talk them through a session, feeding vital information and track data on their way to pole position or that all-important podium. Hear important HUD information via the controller speaker, leaving your main audio mix clean and free of distraction, the way a race should be heard. Adaptive triggers For PS5, the adaptive triggers are utilised by attaching the amount of resistance directly to slip ratios of the tyres. What this means is when your car ‘locks up’ under braking, the amount of resistance through the brake trigger increases, resulting in a more immersive connection with the car. Likewise, when wheelspin occurs the resistance of the accelerator trigger is increased. A subtle difference to the resting resistance of the accelerator and brake triggers has also been applied to simulate the difference in pressure needed to fully depress the brake vs accelerator pedals in a real-life F1 car.
