  5. One cannot mention FromSoftware without mentioning its hugely influential and infamously uncompromising action titles, Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Loved and feared in equal measure, but almost universally respected, the games have become fierce fan favorites and established a very specific set of expectations from its creators. For its next big release, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the team have made some bold changes to their celebrated formula, reimagining and completely overhauling many of their iconic design staples to create something ambitiously different. With Sekiro launching today, we thought we’d take a moment to give you a few handy day-one tips and explain what veteran From Software fans will need to keep in mind as they take on this challenging new adventure. Sculptor’s Idols The dim glow of an unkindled bonfire is the true siren song of a seasoned Souls fan – a place to take a rest, refill your supplies and set out with fresh determination. In Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, it’ll be the faint blue glow of a Sculptor’s Idol that will offer sanctuary from the harsh environment. From here you’ll be able to re-fill your inventory, stock up on healing items, unlock new skills and fast travel to other points you’ve discovered. The more you progress through the game, the more useful these will become, adding new options and abilities as you go. Freedom of Movement While Dark Souls was always a very grounded series (in the most literal sense), relying on slow but steady movement, Sekiro’s superhuman shinobi is as fleet and agile as the wind. Unrestricted by stamina limitations, you’ll be able to run, vault and dart about the world, hanging from ledges, swinging from your grappling hook and bearing down on enemies from on-high. This newfound freedom aids not only exploration but plays a key role in combat: if the toe to toe approach isn’t working for you, try running, jump and swinging to outwit your enemies. Shortcuts While it’d be lovely to have a Buddha Statue plopped by the roadside every hundred yards or so, Dark Souls fans will know better than to expect such a reliable sense of safety from the designers at FromSoft. Much like the studio’s other titles, you’ll need to work you way through the world overcoming tough encounters and opening new routes to move forward more quickly. If it seems like you’re a long way from safety, hunt around for a quicker route back — a one-way door, perhaps… Stealthy Takedowns While games like Bloodborne and Dark Souls offer the occasional opportunity to backstab an opponent, for the most, classic FromSoft titles have you facing your enemies head-on. As an agile shinobi, however, you’ll be expected to strike your enemies from the shadows: stalking the tall grass, leaping from behind a wall or dropping from secluded rooftop. Out-numbered as you’ll often be, this will often be your safest option. Groups of enemies can deal large amounts of damage and close around you quickly, so survey the area, distract and separate your enemies, and pick them off in ones and twos — otherwise death might be surprisingly swift. Helpful Acquaintances No Dark Souls adventure would be complete without bumping into a handful of lonely wanders, travelling merchants or other eccentric, itinerant sorts. In Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, this tradition is alive and well. Take the time to speak with any friendly NPCs you run across, as many will have useful information, items for sale or other helpful tidbits to offer. The new eavesdropping feature also adds a fresh dimension: listening in on the conversations of your enemies will yield not only useful story information, but occasionally clues on how to tackle certain enemies, where to find specific items or where go next. The Art of Combat Dark Souls maintained a tried-and-true formula that placed emphasis on mastering a small number of combat options across a wide range of weapons. While Sekiro’s shinobi protagonist has only his trusty sword Kusabimaru, he has a vast amount of flexibility with it. Dodging and blocking remain, but the true goal is to overpower your opponent through timing and finesse. Brute force is reckless: many combatants will use misplaced attacks to open you up for counter blows. Read their movements carefully: deflect their attacks and time your ripostes to break their posture, opening them up for deadly ‘deathblows’. Some of these moves will take practice to master — if you need to hone your skills, seek out Hanbei the Infested at the Dilapidated Temple, who’ll be willing to spare and train with you. The Healing Gourd That simple but elegant staple of Dark Souls gameplay, the Estus Flask, finds its spiritual successor aiding our hero’s travels in Sekiro. Filled with a mysterious medicinal water, this humble alembic will re-fill itself when you rest at Sculptor’s Idols and its uses can be expanded if you track down Gourd Seeds and hand them over to Emma at the Dilapidated Temple. Moreover, as you progress, unlockable skills will improve the amount of healing received from each draught. Almost indispensable in your battle with the Ashina Clan, it is not however, the only way to maintain vitality. Augment with Skills While FromSoft’s prior outings placed emphasis on scaling the power and efficacy of a fixed set of tools, Sekiro’s more focused and flexible approach to combat requires a different tact. Instead of levelling statistics, as you move through the game, you’ll have the chance to unlock a range of passive and active skills from a number of distinct skill trees. While some will increase power, most will augment existing abilities or offer new ways to approach each encounter. Combat Arts unlocked via these trees can only be equipped one at time, so ensure you spend your points on abilities that’ll best compliment your play style. A Sprawling Game World Rarely in a Souls game will you find yourself railroaded along a single narrow path, with no option but to press on or give up. Sekiro carries forward this philosophy, offering multiple directions in which to explore from the initial hub, each with different environments and unique challenges to overcome. Using the Sculptor’s Idols, you’ll be able to navigate between these as quickly as needed. If you find yourself up-against a challenging obstacle, try exploring elsewhere and developing your abilities before coming back for a second try. The Shinobi Prosthesis Off-hand weapons are nothing new in the Dark Souls universe, but Sekiro’s shinobi prothesis is so advanced and flexible, it far outstrips what we’ve come to expect. Starting off as little more than a replacement limb, as you explore, you’ll be able to enhance its function with new gadgets, from heavy melee weapons to explosive crowd-control measures and precise ranged projectiles. Take heed: this mysterious contraption has but limited uses, so be prudent in its use. New attachments turn up all over, dropped by enemies, hidden in shrines or for sale with certain merchants. Keep your eyes open and when you find a new one, return to the Sculptor at the Dilapidated Temple to install the upgrade. Some enemies require certain prosthetic fittings to overcome, so if you’re struggling with just the sword, consider what prosthetic attachments you have available. A Wealth of Secrets The FromSoft team have long sought to reward those attentive players that comb over each area with care, placing carefully hidden items and pathways just out of sight for canny explorers to find. Sekiro holds to the same philosophy, but hides more than just items and entrance-ways: careful investigation of each area will reveal multiple different avenues to approach your enemies – skirting along a building side, shimmying up a cliff or creeping beneath a building. Don’t rush through areas, there’s much to be missed by those not paying attention and many game-changing rewards to be discovered, including items, NPCs and entirely new areas. Increasing your Power Hands off that sprint button, Souls-fans, there’s no need to go gambolling back to the last place you fell to retrieve your lost plunder. While death is a significant part of Sekiro, it’s not as closely tied to levelling as in previous FromSoft titles. In order to gain new skills you’ll have to earn Skill Points, accumulated by overcoming ordinary foes. Growth in areas like vitality and strength, meanwhile, will require special items – prayer beads and memories – only dropped by far more powerful adversaries. Trade all these at the Buddha Sculptures to develop your skills and improve your efficacy in battle. Lore-driven Mechanics The Hollow, the Unkindled and those burdened with dreadful Insight amongst you will know well to what we refer to here. While we’re in no hurry to spoil anything in Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice, rest assured that over-arching systems that tie closely with both your progress as a player and the world’s ongoing narrative are deeply woven into the experience. Meeting a true death will reveal a new system which will affect not just you and your ability recover from future failures, but also the wellbeing of those around you – moreover, these will stack the more you fail. Fear not, however: it is possible to recover if you’re struggling. Speak with Emma at the Dilapidated Temple for more information. Cheating Death The Dark Souls series has made a virtue — an emboldening rite of passage — of in-game death and so it seems apt that this new outing should seek to turn this on its head. As the game’s subtitle suggests, those laid low by their adversaries can draw on a remarkable gift to rise from the grave and fight once more. Moreover, those who make good on this blessing and endure against all odds, might find that further blessings await. This isn’t quite as simple as it seems: not only is it a way to avoid the penalties of a true death, taking down further enemies after resurrection will recharge this ability, hopefully allowing you to stave off death for even longer periods. And with that, we’ll say no more. Like all FromSoft games, a core part of the experience is exploring the game world and discovering things for yourself. We hope this will have given an idea of what to expect and how to avoid some of the early pitfalls. View the full article

  7. It started with a text: “Would you be interested in working on a Bloodlines 2?” The text was from my good friend, Ka’ai Cluney, and my first thought was, “Would I?” But as we texted back and forth, something happened — an idea started to emerge, the embryonic formation of what we are announcing today: Bloodlines 2. It’s still overwhelming to think about how many stars had to align to make this happen. It’s not every day that a property gets resurrected after so many years, and there are multiple trials that need to be faced in order to even make it to the production stage. Ka’ai and I started fleshing out the world of Bloodlines 2 over a series of drinks in late 2015 — the iteration was rapid. Ka’ai had already talked Andy Kipling and Russ Nelson (the founders of Hardsuit) into setting up a pitch with Paradox after hearing that they had just acquired the World of Darkness IP. Paradox was eager to meet, and we ended up pitching the game in February 2016 at DICE. We walked out of the room confident that all parties were energized about the idea – but it was a longshot for such a small, unknown company to snag a project like this. This is one of those rare times as a dev where you’re pretty sure it’s going to take a million coin flips to come up heads for all the paperwork to be signed, but shortly after the pitch Paradox and Hardsuit Labs were making a sequel to one of the biggest cult RPGs of all time. Who is Hardsuit Labs, you might be asking? When I first started working with Hardsuit, it reminded me a lot of another small studio full of ambitious veterans and juniors: Troika Games, the developers of Bloodlines 1. Andy, Russ and Ka`ai put together a group that can only be described as a super-team of developers. Today, there are over 60 people working on Bloodlines 2 at Hardsuit Labs. And we’ve set our first major title right here in our home city of Seattle. Why bring the World of Darkness to Seattle? Seattle has always attracted pioneers, artists, and opportunists — some dreamers, some criminals, sometimes both. In the 21st century, it’s a city whose identity is constantly struggling to retain its legacy and define its future. It’s a city of artists and craftsman, but also home to some of the biggest corporations in the world. It’s a conflict between the old and new, the weird and the wealthy, and an ideal setting for Vampire: The Masquerade. Bloodlines 2 is a reflection of modern Seattle and within it we’ve built a rich mythology based on the city’s history and present, filtered through the lens of the World of Darkness. You will stalk these streets, you will meet its power players, and you will claw and charm your way into the inner circle of Kindred society. It’s been an amazing experience to return to the World of Darkness and make the true sequel to Bloodlines that you’ve all been waiting for. We could not be more excited to revive this universe after 15 years and — for the first time ever — bring Bloodlines to a PlayStation platform! Expect to hear more about the factions, clans, story and RPG systems in Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 in the months to come. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 will release on PlayStation 4 in 2020! View the full article

  9. How do you approach a big publisher with a pitch for a game about recreating your childhood games playing war in rural 80s Sweden? The answer is: you don’t. There would be too many risks involved with such a niche setting for a mainstream audience. When you plan to put a small team in a Swedish studio on developing an entirely self-published project however, it makes all the sense in the world. When me and Tobias (Executive Producer) pitched the game internally, we realized we would be able to build a really passionate team around the idea of creating something so close to home. While the fantasy originated some time in the late 80s — hiding underneath the covering branches of a spruce tree and taking aim at imaginary enemies with a homemade wooden rifle (made more realistic-looking by use of too many rolls of our dad’s black electrical tape) — Generation Zero was truly born during the development of theHunter: Call of the Wild. After many years of mainly creating big budget AAA titles such as Just Cause and Mad Max, Call of the Wild was an exciting new step for Avalanche. As a completely self-published title, we used the same technology and experience from our AAA history to empower a relatively small team to create the most immersive hunter simulator ever made. Play Video Play Video While working on the hunting game, we realized that we had created environments and mechanics that could easily compete with similar ones in more mainstream experiences. We had essentially created really advanced stealth action mechanics and when we toyed with the idea of twisting the players’ role from that of a hunter to being hunted, it was as if everything just came together in an instant. The forests and fields of Call of the Wild were the spitting image of the countryside where I grew up, giving me nostalgic throwbacks to my childhood games. The stealth action mechanics were perfect for a guerilla warfare setting and the animal simulation systems of Call of the Wild took on new meaning with the huge, menacing machines of Generation Zero. The machines in turn helped us tell a rarely heard story about Sweden during the cold war, the very same period where we as kids were out in the woods fighting pretend wars. The risks were all still there of course. Would an international audience accept a game set in Sweden? Would our existing fans be okay with a less fast-paced guerilla action game after having darted from explosion to explosion with grappling hook and parachute in the Just Cause games? Could a small team (peaking at around 30 people) create a mid-price range game in a relatively short time frame, which would be able to stand out in a competitive landscape of zombie survival games and battle royales? What we’ve always come back to during development was that feeling of working on a project fueled by passion. As Mark Twain allegedly stated: “Write what you know.” Featuring something so close to our hearts, and feeding on memories and nostalgia, I have always felt that we can deliver something that will feel authentic, even to people who didn’t grow up in Sweden in the 1980s. Now we are finally ready to release it to players all around the world. Though to be fair, launch is only the beginning. This is a game we will continue to pour our hearts into for a long time, and we can’t wait to keep on building it together with our players. View the full article
  10. Launch is upon us! Many fans will choose to go into Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice completely blind, but if you’re looking to get some preparation in before you play we have compiled some tips and tricks that you might find helpful. As a reminder, Sekiro is an evolution of FromSoftware’s signature combat, so some of the tactics that worked in their previous games might not be so effective this time around… Here are a few key bits of advice I’d give to players: Deflection: Deflect is critical, and mixing consecutive deflects with aggressive attacks is the key to success in battle. If you don’t deflect an enemy’s attacks and try to rely on just dodges, you’re going to have a hard time winning against tougher bosses. This takes practice and is one of the toughest parts of the learning curve. Remember that you may have to deflect multiple times in rapid succession depending on the move your opponent uses, so learning what your opponent is capable of is a big advantage. Mikiri: Unlock Mikiri Counter within your first two or three skill unlocks. Not only does it look cool to step on an enemy’s weapon, it’s just too good to not have and makes dealing with powerful stabby enemies much easier. Heed Perilous Attacks: Learn how to deal with all the different Perilous attacks early. Recommend finding Hanbei the Undying on the Dilapidated Temple grounds, and doing all of his training (even the stuff you think you already know), it will be a big help. Also, doing all of his basic training unlocks a “free combat” option. Talking to him again after you’ve faced the first Samurai General in Ashina Outskirts unlocks advanced training options. Revisit Enemies: If you’re getting destroyed by a boss or a midboss, don’t be afraid to leave, explore elsewhere, gain a few skills and stats and come back later. Try New Skills and Combos: Experiment and make liberal use of the jump-kick for repositioning/interrupts and prosthetic follow-up attacks such as Chasing Slice for gap closing. These moves are extremely helpful for controlling the flow of combat. Strategize: Much of the strategy in the game is based on how good your initiate is and if you’re bringing the right tools to the party. If you’re traversing a stage with a lot of regular enemies in it, look to stealth engage with Bloodsmoke, get a few quick stealth kills, and then it’s all about tactics. Those are just some of the key suggestions, but we hope everyone will experiment and find the style and tools that suit them best. For me I like to use the shuriken + chasing slice combo to quickly close the gap with a relatively isolated enemy. I’ll use a posture-damaging combat art to quickly break an enemy’s posture before others can reach me, and then I’ll make use of the invincibility frames of the deathblow I perform to avoid attacks from the rest of the enemies. If I can’t break his posture in time I might jump-kick backward off him to create space and reassess. What I do after that depends on how close enemies are and what their strengths and weaknesses are, but if I’m swarmed I’ll throw a firecracker and blind them, and either take the risk of trying to attack and perform another quick deathblow, or sprint just out of attack range so I can keep them in front of me and avoid getting surrounded. From that point the battle’s begun, and it becomes all about knowing what my enemy is capable of, and responding accordingly. If I’m in a 1v1 vs an extremely powerful enemy with fast posture regeneration, I might equip combat arts that are better at damaging vitality, as the lower an enemy’s vitality, the slower they regenerate posture. Then once they’re low I can start using moves focused on breaking their posture as fast as possible. Good luck — we hope you enjoy Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice! View the full article

  12. Betrayed and left for dead, Mr. Wolf is hell-bent on finding his killer and enacting revenge — alone, and vastly outnumbered. It’s me, the mullet-wearing co-founder of Paper Cult, Raph Toulouse! We’re a small eight-person studio from Montreal bringing you Bloodroots. In Bloodroots, the world is your weapon. Everything in the environment can be picked up and will change how you get around and how you dispatch any of the hundreds of enemies. For example, a ladder can be spun around to crush your enemies, to fly over gaps, or it can actually be used as a ladder to get up on higher terrain. The game moves at a breakneck speed and it’s all about improvising the deadliest of combos as you experiment with what you find. Our creative process is greatly influenced by the work of Quentin Tarantino in terms of creating a patchwork of a wide variety of influences to generate something new and interesting. As so Bloodroots proudly puts forward many of its influences ranging from a bunch of different medium. We thought I’d go through some of those so you get a sense of where we’re coming from. Hotline Miami Dennis and Jonathan from Dennaton (wow they just mashed their two names together) really changed the game for fast-paced action games in 2012 with Hotline Miami. The thrill and euphoria that came from the improvisation of juggling with different weapons so quickly to clear room after room of bad guy, was just never seen before. You’ll definitely see some of this in Bloodroots. Jackie Chan Talking about improvisation, Jackie Chan is the master of improvising with everyday objects to use them in over-the-top action scenes. There’s a scene from Police Story 4: First Strike where he wields a ladder in so many different ways — it’s so amazing. We had to have a crazy spinning ladder in the game as well. Samurai Jack Fans of the series might have picked up on this one from the moment they saw a screenshot, but the art from Genndy Tartakovsky’s series had a profound impact on the game’s visual direction; from the textures to the over the top character animations to the use of background and foreground elements. To be even more specific, the work of Scott Wills on Samurai Jack had a deep impact on our art direction research. The Revenant There’s no going around it, being French-Canadian, we’re giving the world of Bloodroots our own nordic touch. The Revenant was a good reminder that the America of the 1800’s hasn’t been exploited a ton yet and could be the setting, not only of historical pieces, but also fun action movies. We refer to this era as the ‘’western prequel’.’ While we wear our inspirations of our sleeves, Bloodroots is definitely more than the sum of its parts. Thankfully, you can experience Mr.Wolf‘s revenge quest through the Weird West yourself when the game comes out this summer on PlayStation 4. We’ll surely have more to discuss as we get closer to the game’s official release. Talk soon! View the full article
  13. Hey folks, I’m Spaff from Double Fine Productions, and I’m very excited for you to see our new Rad game trailer! In the third age, after two apocalypses have totally ravaged the earth, humanity lives on. But time is running out, and in order to survive they must seek a new source of power in the Fallow. To do this, they must first find the one they call… Rad. Rad is a 3D action rogue-like from Bandai Namco Entertainment America and Double Fine Productions. It’s headed up by project lead Lee Petty who previously brought you Headlander and Stacking, and was the art director of Brütal Legend. You’ll play as a teenager who is sent into a procedurally generated, ever-changing radioactive wasteland to find a way to save humanity. To try and transform this cracked, barren landscape into a lush new source of life. But there’s a catch. The deeper you journey into unknown lands, the more you will expose yourself to gnarly toxins which will wreak havoc on your fragile human form — twisting and mutating you into something far less than human, but far more powerful. When you begin your quest, life is all about you and your trusty bat. But the Fallow is unpredictable, and every playthrough will look different, and play differently too, as random mutations build up, stack, or evolve, and require you to adapt your play style on the fly. Not to be a bummer, but the chances are you won’t make it and another teenager will need to step up to follow in your footsteps. But forget all that — go grab that sweet bat and help save the world… or what’s remaining of it anyway! View the full article
  14. My name is Guo Xing, and I’m the lead producer at ScreamBox Studio in Beijing. Our homage to classic vertical shooters, AngerForce: Reloaded, will release on PS4 in less than two weeks. To celebrate this exciting moment for us, I’d like to take you behind the scenes and talk about the conception of the game and some of the animation processes we use. Development began in 2013, and the tools we used were all developed in-house. It’s fair to say we lacked experience at that point. I recall the first time I saw the awesome 2D game Dragon’s Crown, and coming away totally shocked. I couldn’t believe the quality of their 2D animation. Following much consultation and research, we decided to continue development of our game using the Unity engine. In order to maintain efficiency, we reused most of the existing assets and kept the 2D aesthetic of the game. Animations were created using a third-party tool called Spine. Spine has become very popular in recent years, as it offers many convenient features: curve adjustment animation rhythm, grid deformation animation, allowing mixed animation playback, etc. Support for various engines is also a plus. With the help of these new tools, we were able to complete our complicated boss designs much faster. This boss design is made up of four stages, with each animation in each stage adding up to more than 40 animations in total. The boss is huge, but the texture used for all animations is only the 1024×1024 texture below. The kind of actions a body can make is determined at the design stage, and the resulting animations depend on this design. Mechs need to have structural support to ensure believable movements and deformations. If the initial design is sound, animation implementation is just a matter of course. The next step is to determine the details of the animation: how the unit behaves, how it is attacked, how to deploy weapons, and so on. If we determine that the design is feasible, we create a model for this unit and place the final look of the boss in the game environment to determine its effect in the scene. Next, we start to create the animations themselves. We disassemble all the joints used, render the perspectives required for some joints separately, and then import these joints into the animation tool. Certain elements or joints, if they are symmetrical, can also be mirrored to reduce any unnecessary workloads. For example, if a mech’s right side weapons platform is identical to that on the left side, then mirroring the asset makes sense. During this process, it’s possible to achieve an even higher degree of visual accuracy by implementing an animation technique known as Free Form Deformation. FFD involves defining a mesh on a normal 2D texture, which allows the texture to be transformed by manipulating the mesh. From here it’s possible to obtain various perspectives of the original texture, resulting in smooth transitions and achieving an almost 3D look. Once the animations are complete and rendered within the game world, the boss mech comes to life. The original idea conceived back during the design stage is now an entity that players will soon be able to interact with. This process is repeated for every enemy you’ll face in AngerForce: Reloaded, and also for each of the four playable characters. Check out the game when it launches on April 2! View the full article

  16. Do you remember your first Chocobo? My very first encounter was in 1997 when I got my hands on my very first Final Fantasy game. This changed the meaning of fun in my household forever, transitioning me away from tangible toys as I hid in my room with my video games. It was this magnificent flightless bird that helped me avoid enemy encounters… especially with a certain formidable snake that always resulted in a Game Over screen whenever I boldly thought I could defeat it in combat. Through the ages there have been many iterations of this fan-favorite bird, from its very first appearance in Final Fantasy II to its own solo series, Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon. I sat down with character designer, Toshiyuki Itahana to learn where the design for Chocobos started and where they are now. “This art was the first time I designed a super stylized Chocobo, for the first Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon title. Compared to the stylized Chocobos of today, this one’s beak and nails are quite a bit sharper. We added some more roundness to them when we translated it into pixel art for the actual game data. This is something I designed about 22 years ago, so it makes me feel nostalgic, but the signature beside it is uncool (LOL).” Hello Itahana san! What was your role in Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon Every Buddy!? I handled the art direction and additional design work needed for Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon Every Buddy! In terms of the additional design work, I prepared designs in the process of generating new models for characters and monsters that appeared in Chocobo’s Dungeon and Chocobo’s Dungeon 2. Devil Chocobo from Chocobo’s Dungeon and Skull Hammer from Chocobo’s Dungeon 2 will appear in this game! I also discussed specifics about the direction of this game with the producer at the beginning of development, including which title in the series would serve as a basis, and what features should be implemented. Do you know where the idea of chocobos first started? Chocobo is a character that was contrived and designed by Koichi Ishii when Final Fantasy II was being developed. The one that appears in Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon is a version that was stylized specifically for a Final Fantasy spin-off with a rogue-like system. I designed it when I was temporarily assigned to work at Square Soft while I was a designer at my previous company, a toy manufacturer. At the time, I explored various designs including chocobos with a sharper beak that appeared more like a dinosaur as well as those that appeared more like a chick. What’s been your favorite Chocobo design since its inception? It happens to be a job in Every Buddy!, but the White Mage Chocobo is very cute and has to be one of my favorites. It’s been released as a plush, so I always have it decorating my desk. I also like the Red Mage Chocobo, which also is a job, and its appearance is pretty cool! The red hat suits the Chocobo really well and it’s also a very strong job. “I designed this as package art for Chocobo’s soundtrack. Chocobo and the monsters are stylized, and they’re performing instruments together here. I like illustrations that let you imagine the moment that’s being captured, so when I drew this, I made sure to give them facial expressions that hint at some sort of story. Who might be the character hiding in the grass?” What was it like designing the Chocobo style for this game vs. others? Compared to other titles I’ve worked on, such as Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII or NieR:Automata, I took care in developing designs that still look appealing, even after simplifying them by paring down the details. Simply put, I aimed to create designs that would be easy for even children to copy and draw. As a result, we received many wonderful submissions for the “My Chocobo Contest” that the Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon marketing team recently ran in Japan where we asked participants to share various Chocobo-themed handcrafted items and dishes. I enjoyed looking through each and every one of them with the development team. Everyone is so talented — we were so surprised! I’m truly thankful for everyone who participated. The appeal for Chocobos in this game is that they have some very neat jobs, how was designing the style and costume for each of the jobs? There are numerous jobs in this title so it was quite a task to differentiate the designs. For any character, we need to ensure the job is easily identifiable through the colors used as well as the silhouette. It’s relatively easy to distinguish the job with the equipment in-hand for human characters in Final Fantasy, but a Chocobo is unable to carry anything by hand, so I try to draw designs that make the job easily identifiable with few colors and a simple silhouette. Aside from that, compared to other titles, these stylized designs are relatively easy to transform into plush and merchandise, so I have a lot of fun drawing these as I’m also conscious about creating designs that would retain its appeal, even when they’re made into merchandise. “I drew this up for a party game called “Chocobo’s Crystal Hunt.” I aimed for a similar feel to art that was drawn by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone for game books in the past – these were popular in Japan back then as well. I draw Chocobo in this “glancing over the shoulder” pose rather frequently.” “I designed this as an enemy for World of Final Fantasy. I went for a futuristic mech-style design, keeping the details on the low side. However, I also incorporated a Gatling gun under Chocobo’s wing, and there’s a weapon in the beak as well. Plus, there’s a Moogle hiding on its belly… When I played the game, it turned out that this Chocobo’s voice was actually pretty cute, which warmed my heart.” Which of these jobs is your favorite to play? The machinist is a new job that has been added to this title. It allows you to set traps and, if used wisely, unleash very powerful attacks. I also like the design. You’ll be able to enjoy the process of leading monsters into traps in a quite rogue-like manner. In actuality, the machinist is based on a design submitted by a Chocobo’s Dungeon series player for a job design contest we had previously conducted. Regrettably, the design didn’t make the cut back then, but it’s making its first appearance here. What do you recommend for new players to this game and series? There are two ways to enjoy Every Buddy! 1) You can have a blast with others by playing and discussing strategy with family and friends, or 2) You can dive into the game alone when you want to take time and cautiously consider your moves as though you’re solving a puzzle. For those who think rogue-like games may be difficult, I would love to see you try experiencing this adventure with Chocobo at your side since the beginning is designed to ease you in. For experienced players who enjoy and prefer a challenge, we prepared dungeons with higher difficulty, so please give it a try and let us know how far you get! View the full article

This comes just in time for NCAA March Madness, so you can keep an eye on all the action or mix and match live games with live news or other programs. Multi-view is one of our most popular features on PlayStation 4, so we are thrilled to expand to Apple TV to allow more of our customers to enjoy the feature. Additionally, the multi-view feature on PS4, which offers up to three live channels at once, is receiving two updates today. The first update is real-time program changing, which means you will no longer have to start from the beginning each time you want to add in a different program. The second update is new filters – now Sports and News have their own dedicated tabs, which makes it even easier for you to find sports and news for multi-view. 20. Going on a journey is always exciting — you never know exactly what will happen or where you will end up. For us at Okomotive, releasing our first game Far: Lone Sails is exactly the trip we’ve always dreamed of taking. Now, we’re close to another major destination: the game arrives on PS4 April 2. Far: Lone Sails is a vehicle adventure game. In a unique hybrid of ship and train, you travel across an ocean-turned-desert following the tracks of a once-flourishing civilization. Through an array of roadblocks and through hazardous weather you need to keep your vessel going. Where will this journey take you? Are you the last of your kind? Far: Lone Sails takes you into a post-apocalyptic, yet zombie-free world: it’s just you and your machine vs. the big nothing. Its unique mechanics and atmosphere make the game stand out from the crowd. The art style and music are unique in the best sense — a sight and sound to behold. But what probably stands out the most — especially in the platformer genre — is Far’s pacing, which leaves enough time and space to relax and take in the scenery. Studio Okomotive is based in Zurich, Switzerland. We’re five game designers and one musician. All of us studied at the University of the Arts in Zurich, where we met and the idea for our debut title was born. It started out in 2015 as Don Schmocker’s bachelor’s thesis. He came up with the concept and art style, drawing inspiration from various sources including Theo Jansen’s Strandbeest, The Straight Story by David Lynch, and post-apocalyptic movies like Mad Max. He built a prototype of Far together with composer Joel Schoch. Shortly after that, publisher Mixtvision hopped on board, so that the idea and concept could be built upon. Don teamed up with Goran Saric, a fellow student of his, to handle the technical aspects of the game. During the development process, the team grew further: first, Martina Hugentobler joined for animations, then Phil Stern to support them in level design and art, and finally, Fabio Baumgartner made it to the team as a programmer and sound designer. After a successful release for PC and Mac, collecting numerous awards along the way, it was only a matter of time to bring the game to PlayStation, too. So here we are, finally getting close to our next destination. To everyone joining the trek to PS4 starting April 2, we have some words of advice for you: Hoist your sails, let the wind guide you — and keep your eyes open, so that you will be able to perceive the beauty that lies in small things and to find little beacons of hope. Even when times are rough and the world may seem dreary to you, hang in there and keep going. View the full article
  21. Hello, PlayStation fans! Now that Days Gone has officially gone gold, I’m happy to finally share details about Bend Studio’s implementation of Photo Mode. The world of Days Gone includes a regular day/night cycle, as well as multiple biomes and weather types. We’re giving players all the tools they need to capture and share these breathtaking vistas and the unique sandbox gameplay moments Days Gone makes possible. The vast Central Oregon wilderness is so beautifully crafted and rendered in Days Gone it’s easy to forget that you’re playing a game. Our aim with Photo Mode was to make players feel like they’re manipulating a real camera in the real world. Of course, this includes features that people expect to come standard these days. From the Characters panel, users can toggle character and bike visibility as well as select from a library of facial expressions. The Frames & Presets panel hosts nine custom frames, several black frame shapes and sizes, Days Gone logo options, and 18 filter presets. The Lens panel lets players manipulate Field of View, Focal Distance, Aperture, and Film Grain. One of the first features we developed for Photo Mode was the inclusion of Focus Lock, which allows users to set a permanent focus point that stays sharp no matter where they move the camera. But the pièce de résistance is our Advanced Mode where users can fine-tune their final shots by manipulating 55 different settings across Bloom, Color Grading, and Color Depth Grading panels. We worked closely with members of our Art team, including some Hollywood veterans, to help define the essential properties to capture all the power and flexibility that comes with professional photo editing software. This is the very same interface our artists used to author the filter presets that ship with the game. Players can even use one of our presets as a starting point to learn how Advanced Mode works, then use it a baseline to creating their own filter that can be saved to one of five preset slots for easy reuse later. All of this will be available at launch. Everyone at Bend Studio can’t wait to see the pictures the community creates starting April 26! View the full article
