The first installment in the Star Ocean series released in 1996, and five mainline games, one spinoff game, and one mobile game have been developed to this day since then. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the series and its latest mainline title – Star Ocean The Divine Force – been announced. Star Ocean The Divine Force is developed by Square Enix and tri-Ace, and set to release on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in 2022. The game features a story that blends sci-fi and fantasy, a rich lineup of characters and side stories, a battle system delivering exhilarating combat with easy controls, and more. Play Video Star Ocean The Divine Force Features: A story that changes based on the choices made, where heroes intersect between the two worlds of sci-fi and fantasy A rich lineup of playable characters Freedom to fly around the environment Three-dimensional traversal and exploration where everything in-sight is a field for adventure The Star Ocean game with the fastest and mightiest action in the series Protagonists from two different civilizations collide The “Double Hero” system returns in which the story spanning the stars and beyond will unfold from the perspective of each protagonist, one from an advanced civilization (sci-fi) and the other from an underdeveloped planet (fantasy). Events that unfold throughout the story as well as the ally characters you end up with will differ based on the protagonist the player chooses. In this game, there is range of playable characters in addition to the two protagonists, and you can control each of the party members. Raymond A young man from the nonfederated planet of Verguld. He is the captain of the merchant vessel Ydas under Lawrence Logistics, a company run by his family. His confidence often sees him rushing recklessly into situations when it comes to his friends and work, much to the distress of the Ydas crew. Raymond has a big heart, affable nature, and a good nose for business. His lack of affiliation with the Pangalactic Federation means he is not bound by the Underdeveloped Planet Preservation Pact. This sincere openness to meet others where they’re at regardless of technological advancement wins Laeticia over, but leaves Albaird wary. Laeticia Princess of the Kingdom of Aucerius: a large territory located on the underdeveloped planet of Aster IV. Her radiant and resolute personality is admired throughout the kingdom, but her prim demeanor betrays her penchant for wearing armor and remarkable skill with the dual blades. In order to remedy the encroaching threat of a neighboring country, Laeticia sets off on a secret journey to locate a certain individual. She meets Raymond along the way, recently stranded on Aster IV. The two agree to help one another and begin traveling together. Elena A crew member of the merchant vessel Ydas and Raymond’s first mate. She manages the operation of just about the entirety of the ship, and her vast knowledge and cool demeanor have earned her the complete trust of Raymond and the crew. Elena is constantly surprised by Raymond’s proclivity for recklessness, but all the same she holds a high opinion of his leadership qualities. Albaird A childhood friend of Laeticia’s, he now serves her as a knight of the Kingdom of Aucerius. He excels at semiomancy and the wielding of chakram. His strong sense of loyalty to Laeticia means he is never far from her side. Albaird’s left arm is covered down to his fingertips, and he occasionally gestures as if to protect it. He does not trust Raymond upon meeting him while escorting Laeticia on her secret journey. Loathe to go against her wishes, however, he reluctantly allows Raymond to join them. Freely fly around the environment In this game, characters have the freedom to move around 360 degrees, and can even fly through the skies. Players can fly in the sky and traverse three-dimensionally through one of the largest fields ever in the series. Whether they explore by hopping around rocky stretches and rooftops, or seamlessly enter battles after jumping off cliffs, more than ever, the game will allow players greater freedom in their approach in both battles and their adventures. The fastest and mightiest action in the series Battles have also evolved in Star Ocean The Divine Force. Characters can make an assault straight from traversing at incredibly high speeds, disappear instantly before an enemy, or even defeat a horde of enemies with a skill that enables on-shot kills. Experience tough yet exhilarating battles while freely flying around the world. The fate of the universe awakens when two heroes cross paths The Pangalactic Federation. From their earliest days in the Sol System, this organization has sought to bring peace and tranquility to the galactic multitudes. As their reach has expanded through the universe, many a hero has served under their banner; saviors to planets in need. But by the year 583 SD, things have changed. The once peaceful Pangalactic Federation is now known for assimilating planets against their will. Once standing for justice, they are now wreathed in darkness. Raymond, captain of the merchant vessel Ydas, departs from the nonfederated planet of Verguld on a standard transport mission. The job is simple, the route familiar, yet things go awry when the Ydas is attacked by the Astoria: a battleship carrying a member of the Pangalactic Federation’s preeminent Kenny family. Raymond and his crewmate Chloe are forced to abandon ship amidst the chaos and head for the remote, underdeveloped planet of Aster IV. Before their escape pods can even land, a burst of energy resembling an EMP from the planet’s surface knocks out their systems and brings them crashing down. They find themselves separated and stranded on an unfamiliar planet. Upon landing, Raymond is immediately attacked by some of the less-than-friendly local wildlife. But when all seems lost, his life is saved by the crown princess of the Kingdom of Aucerius: Laeticia. Marveled by the sudden appearance of this man who rode into her life on a “shooting star,” Laeticia asks Raymond to help save her kingdom from the threat of the neighboring Vey’l Empire. He accepts in exchange for help finding Chloe. So begins their journey on Aster IV. However, Raymond will soon discover he has yet to escape the shadow of the Pangalactic Federation. “Whence do you hail, Ray?” “I’m from another world─one that’s far, far away in the sky.” This encounter, and the ensuing stand against an overwhelming power, marks a new chapter in galactic history. Star Ocean The Divine Force comes to PS4 and PS5 next year. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/DMbofhYsnXEView the full article

Hello everyone, we are proud to be a part of the latest State of Play and on behalf of the studio, I’d like to deliver a few dev notes to accompany our new State of Play trailer. This is our very first reveal of the world map in Little Devil Inside, and our intention was to give you folks a look at how travel works by skipping through a typical mission in the game. Essentially, we tried to create a dynamic, miniature-like representation of the world with tilt-shift effect. During travel in world map travel view, you will come across and encounter various events. Some are forced but in most cases, you will have the option to engage or not. Many are just simple interactions that can be performed while remaining in world map travel view, such as clearing up a road block or re-fuelling your vehicle at an oil station. There are of course instances where you can zoom in further to an actual real-time gameplay level where you can perform all the real-time actions, attend to Billy’s (the protagonist) needs, and fulfill your missions. Regardless of mission content, you are free to roam the world map. You can travel on foot, on a horse (or a mule to be exact…), in vehicles, and of course on a train. Traveling on foot is slowest but you can go where other forms of transportation cannot take you. Another design aspect we wished to show is the overall tone, manner, and pace of actual gameplay. Play Video The game is not about leveling up the character as quickly as you can and speed running through all the content. As such, the pace of the game is designed to try and touch the player’s emotions by giving enough time and space and allow them to “take-in” the various atmosphere. Hence, no fast travel. One of our technical challenges is, of course, trying to make the transition between world map travel view and real-time view as smooth as possible, and we’re working hard on this. That’s all folks. Please stay tuned for more information in the future. Stay safe everyone! http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/PGpj1rLAkQwView the full article

Welcome aboard the Alithea, a luxurious state-of-the-art space cruiser, where nothing is what it seems. Cue ominous music. What began as a relaxing vacation to outer space has erupted into a full-blown A.I. uprising, and those “friendly servants” who’ve been providing bottomless champagne are now trying to kill you! First Class Trouble is a social deception party game, which means communication with the other players is key. Unfortunately, it also means you can’t trust anyone. The situation may sound dire, and things can get chaotic quickly, but don’t panic yet (even if you catch on fire, or get shoved into a pool)! We’ve put together a few tips and tricks to help you survive the wrath of C.A.I.N. Play Video First, let’s start with the basics: At the beginning of each game, you’ll be randomly assigned the role of either Resident or Personoid. Residents are human passengers, and Personoids are mechanically engineered assistants whose programming has been overwritten. Although everyone plays together, you’ll have different objectives to complete depending on your role. Here you’ll have a crucial decision to make: collaborate or deceive? For Residents, your main goal is to shut down the rogue A.I. at the heart of the Alithea. To reach C.A.I.N., you’ll need to collect three keycards to progress to the next level deeper inside the ship. For Personoids, your main goal is simple: stop the Residents from succeeding at all costs. That means lying, tricking, and ultimately ridding the ship of those pesky humans. Despite the many potential perils in the game (and there are a lot), deception is arguably the most deadly weapon to wield in First Class Trouble. Who can you trust? Should you follow the player asking for your help with a co-operative task, or are they leading into a trap? Only you can decide, but here’s a few helpful things to keep in mind: Residents need oxygen to survive and can replenish the ship’s supply by finding spare canisters and turning them in at designated oxygen stations. Personoids don’t need air and can sabotage those same stations, so be on the lookout for anyone suspiciously lingering near one. Personoids are tricksters and will always be looking for opportunities to shove an unsuspecting Resident into fire or lock them in a freezer. However, Personoids can also use syringes against Residents for an up close insta-kill. If you see another player grab a syringe, watch out! Each level requires three keycards to move to the next location. To stop Residents from advancing, a dastardly Personoid can collect a keycard and play keep away. Be careful, though. Players can see who’s carrying a keycard, so hang on to that card too long, and it’s bound to draw suspicion. Don’t necessarily be in a rush to complete levels. Explore and see if you can find pieces of the passenger log. Each one found reveals more hints about who the Personoids are. During the course of a game, there will be opportunities to work together in order to complete an objective. A Personoid who cooperates could potentially earn the trust of a Resident. Just sayin’. After a player has been eliminated, their body remains as evidence. Personoids would be wise to hide it before Residents can use a corpse scanner and learn their true identity. Oh, and about that whole “getting shoved into a pool thing” mentioned earlier? A good samaritan can throw you a floaty to stop you from drowning. How nice of them! We hope these tips have provided you with a helpful introduction to First Class Trouble. You’ll learn more as you go, but we leave you with one last kernel of advice: Always be thinking ahead. Calculating when and where to make your next move is the key to your survival. As revealed during today’s State of Play, First Class Trouble launches into PlayStation Plus for both for PS4 and PS5 on November 2. We can’t wait for you to come aboard and experience the chaos for yourselves! You can play with up to six players, so invite your friends… and try to remain friends afterwards. *PlayStation Plus is an ongoing subscription with recurring fees until cancelled. Age restrictions apply. See here for full terms & conditions. PlayStation Plus monthly games are available to play for the duration of your subscription only. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/FfVfpY4l4MkView the full article

In this article, I’d like to talk a bit about Dolores, the upcoming Open Beta Test, and what makes KOF XV so awesome. Play Video About KOF XV The King of Fighters (KOF) first came onto the scene in 1994 and became one of SNK’s leading fighting game series. Excluding spinoffs, the series has now reached 15 mainline titles (currently KOF XV), and its classic 3-on-3 team battle system is as robust as ever. KOF is also known for its large roster, and KOF XV does not slack in this department either as it boasts 39 playable characters on launch. Vibrant and powerful special moves shake up the stage as Shatter Strike, a new gameplay mechanic introduced in KOF XV makes fights more exciting than ever. Try out the Open Beta Test when it launches to experience the game and all its crazy fun fighting systems. About the New Character, Dolores Our newest character is quite mysterious, as she’s a medium who can speak to the earth and control holy soil. Also, she’s joined arms with the general Heidern and another new character, Isla. Some may have noticed the details on her clothing are similar to the embroidery found on another character, and so along with that info and the fact that she’s paired up with such a strange team means this story is something you won’t want to miss! Get ready for some awesome fights with the cool and collected mysterious Dolores. About the Open Beta Test An Open Beta Test for PS4 and PS5 consoles has been announced to test out the smooth online fighting experience. Naturally, there’s crossplay between both consoles, and so we hope you’ll join us in playing together online. Begins: November 19 at 7:00pm PST / 3:00am BST (4:00am CET) / 12:00pm JST Ends: November 22 at 6:59am PST / 2:59pm BST (3:59pm CET) / 11:59pm JST Open Beta Test Outline For this Open Beta Test, players can select from eight characters: Dolores, a KOF XV newcomer, Shun’ei, the hero for KOF XV, the team members for Team Orochi—Yashiro, Shermie, and Chris, and finally the team members for Team Sacred Treasures—Kyo Kusanagi, Iori Yagami, and Chizuru Kagura. This is a big chance for many fans to try out the heavily anticipated resurrected characters. What’s a fighting game without different fighting modes, and this Open Beta Test features plenty to keep you busy. There’s two online and two offline modes; Casual Match and Room Match can be accessed online while Training and Versus are accessible offline. KartRider: Drift is coming to PlayStation 4 for the first time next year, and you will be able to sign up and participate in the upcoming closed beta! KartRider: Drift is the latest generation in the KartRider franchise, which inherits the original Crazyracing KartRider’s fun and kart-racing mechanisms. While keeping nostalgia alive, this new title introduces next-generation graphics using Unreal Engine 4 alongside improved gameplay systems and full cross-play and cross-progression support. In this upcoming Closed Beta, you will be able to play online on PlayStation 4 to compete with Racers worldwide in real-time. Play Video Arcade Thrills and Fast Fun In the closed beta, two game modes will be available to choose from: Item Mode and Speed Mode. In Item Mode, you can collect items while racing around the track and use these items to your benefit. Each player can hold up to two items at a time and each can be used to attack, defend, or support your allies in team-based races. There are over 15 items in the game so far, each offering a variety of tactics and non-stop action. Never lose focus until the moment you cross the finish line in Item Mode, because anyone can turn the tide of a race with a single move to take the win for themselves. Alternatively, Speed Mode is for players that enjoy fast-paced, competitive racing. In Speed Mode, you will need to have finesse in drifting and using boosts. Your boost gauge charges up when successfully performing drifts, and when the gauge is fully charged you will get a boost item. Activate this boost to blast off ahead of other karts. But be careful! One mistake during the last few moments of a race can give away your win to someone else. Deep Character and Kart Customization During the closed beta, there will be a total of 7 playable characters with a variety of outfits available for each. Meet new characters like Neo, Rex, and Marid along with your favorite original KartRider characters such as Brodi and Diz. Select any character you like and personalize them with unique, character-specific outfits and emotes. You can also choose from more than 20 karts and customize them by equipping different kart body parts and effects, including front and back parts, wheels, license plates, and balloons. Create your own personalized look and win the race with style. In addition, there are plans for over 100 new karts and 150 character outfits that are waiting to be revealed in the future. Beautiful and Thrilling Tracks Over 30 different tracks are waiting for you in this closed beta. You may start off in a cozy village with a massive clock tower, or traverse a mystic forest where roads are rocky and rough. You can opt to drive through a wild city where traffic might block your way, or dash bravely through a spooky graveyard where you’ll have to watch out for unexpected surprises. You can even explore further into icy glaciers, dusty deserts, or a fiery hot course where flaming lava explodes onto the track. Even more unrevealed excitement and tracks await in the future. Create Unique Wraps and Express Yourself The Livery system allows you to customize the color, pattern, wraps, and decals of your kart. There are a variety of decals available in the closed beta that have been designed by in-house artists. You can either select from these existing options, or you can design your own unique decals to express your authentic style. Join the Fun We are happy to announce that the KartRider: Drift closed beta will be available on PlayStation 4 starting on Wednesday, December 8. All new and returning Racers are welcome to join the fun. Sign up for the beta now and rev up your engines until the race begins! http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/5Zke2HEOttkView the full article

Hey everyone, I’m David Fenn – producer at Acid Nerve and one of the designers on Death’s Door! We’ve had a lot of requests for this one, so I’m delighted to finally announce that we are bringing Death’s Door to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on November 23! Reception to the game has been overwhelmingly positive and we are looking forward to more players getting to journey through our dark and offbeat world as a bird with a sword. Play Video We have been working hard to make sure these versions of the game will be everything PlayStation fans want, with even more enhancements for PS5. The 60fps frame rate is buttery-smooth, the Platinum trophy is fun and rewarding, and we have put extra care into creating haptic feedback for the DualSense wireless controller that brings an entire new dimension to the feel of the game. As the sound designer, I was eager for the opportunity to create full haptic feedback support as soon as we started work on the PS5 version. This can be approached with as much detail as sound design – reflecting the weight, speed, complexity, and feel of each impact in the game. When battling the Guardian of the Door, you can feel the overwhelming rush of energy from its laser attacks, while never losing the sensation of its weighty footsteps, the crack of each missile hitting the ground, and the impact of each of your attacks against it. These can all happen simultaneously without anything getting muddled up thanks to the fidelity of the DualSense controller. I knew straight away that haptics could also be used to enhance the sensation of using the various ranged magic abilities you obtain throughout your journey. When designing the game, we realized we would get an extra sense of flow and mastery over the combat when we had a feel for the exact moment magic is charged and ready to be fired. Of course, we do this with sound and visuals already, but having it felt in your hands is both more immediate and immersive. You can feel the intake of power build up in your hands as your flame spell is charged, the pulse of energy when it’s ready to be fired, and the rush of energy leave your hands as you hurl it towards enemies! I’m really pleased with the effect. This is all in service to a game we’ve been pouring our souls into for almost four years now, and we’re so excited for PlayStation fans to be able to step into this world we have loved creating. We really hope you enjoy it. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/DyD7bRgC8EkView the full article

Hey everyone, I’m Ray McCaffrey, executive producer on Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach. We’re very excited to start sharing gameplay details from what is easily the most ambitious Five Nights at Freddy’s yet, coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 December 16. Play Video Security Breach is a first-person, survival horror game set in Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex. You play as Gregory, a little boy who’s trapped inside overnight. Once the surprisingly robust Pizzaplex lockdown procedures go into effect, you must survive while you search for a way out. Let’s take a look at what you’ll be able to expect from Security Breach’s moment-to-moment gameplay. Stealth and Speed The animatronics Roxy, Chica, and Monty have been enlisted by Pizzaplex security to hunt you, and their pursuit is a relentless one. Strategizing how you’ll get past enemies is paramount to avoid those actively pursuing you, as well as more passive S.T.A.F.F. bots that will sound the alarm and call the animatronics to your location if they spot you. In the event you’re detected, run to escape the immediate danger quickly, but running is limited to the amount of stamina you’ve got, so use it wisely. The animatronics also evolve as the night progresses, which means you’ll need to adapt if you want to survive. An Unexpected Ally Freddy Fazbear himself is your most dependable ally, acting as a guide and protector through the Pizzaplex, giving you shortcuts, insider tips, and warnings about the challenges you’ll face. You can also hop inside Freddy’s oversized birthday-cake-hatch, allowing you to hide and march around undetected. You will need to be thoughtful about how and when you use Freddy because he’s only got so much power and requires frequent stops at recharge stations. The Tools to Survive The Pizzaplex is vast, and while that means more S.T.A.F.F bots required for upkeep, it also means there’s no shortage of hiding spots to pop into for a speedy evasion. It also means a ton of security cameras that you can access on your Fazwatch, allowing you to plan your path. You can also knock over different objects like paint cans and toys to draw the enemy’s attention – you will have to slip away before they get to your location, though, so make sure the distraction is worth the risk. Some weapons can stun enemies – the Faz Cam and Fazblaster. The Faz Cam acts as an immediate stun for the entire area in front of you, staggering attackers just long enough to escape. Unfortunately, it has a limited number of uses before requiring a recharge. The Fazblaster has unlimited ammo, but you’ll need to land a direct headshot for it to work, which is not so easy when an animatronic alligator has practically leaped on top of you. There’s so much more on top of all of this that we can’t wait to share with you – Unique office escape games, boss battles, more enemy types, and even fully playable arcades hidden throughout the Pizzaplex. We’re looking forward to sharing all of it with you on December 16. Thank you! http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/2aFr9JuxpdgView the full article

These challenges put a few twists in the gameplay, and will shake up how you explore and catch. And last but not least; capture rare Bughats in order to dress up your favorite Bugsnax. As you can see, we’ve stuffed this update with a smorgasbord of content for new and returning players alike: A new biome to explore. A dozen fresh Bugsnax to capture and feed to your friends. Over 100 challenges and 30 quests. Nearly 200 decorations to collect and display. More delightful dialogue from our returning voice cast. If you’re a returning player, you can start playing the Isle of BIGsnax by loading your completed save, which will put you back into Snaxburg before the point of no return. For new players, this content will show up organically as you play. We’ve been so happy with the response to Bugsnax, and we’re excited to bring more of it to all of you. There’ll be plenty more little updates and improvements to discover all across the game, so keep your eyes peeled. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/6ggj6_PqUp0View the full article

Hey all, I’m Teddy Dief (they/them), creative director of Team OFK, coming to PS4 and PS5. You might know the last game I co-designed, Hyper Light Drifter. I’m here with Itsumi Saito (she/her),from our music teammates – the indiepop band OFK. Itsumi: Hiii, I’m Itsumi Saito keyboardist and manager of OFK! We performed our first song “Follow/Unfollow” at The 2020 Game Awards. You might know it from… wherever you listen to music! Teddy: We’re so hype to be in State of Play! Itsu and I are here to talk about our upcoming music biopic game & E.P., We Are OFK. Play Video Itsumi: In a lot of game stories, the villain is a dragon, a sword man, an evil corporation. That’s not our kind of story. In We Are OFK, the villain is… the struggles you face trying to create something: imposter syndrome, heartbreak, miscommunication, people with different dreams and priorities. It’s really hard to make music, games, art, videos, novels, whatever! That’s the story we want to tell. Our story, of how our band got together in Los Angeles and how, so far, we haven’t screwed it up. Teddy: Our development team related to your story, because our experiences making games and animation feel a lot like yours making a band. I’m so glad y’all agreed to let us make a game about you. Itsumi: Teen Me would be so proud that I’m a videogame protagonist. AND a super gay one. Teddy: You’re the hero we need. Itsumi: Hey thanks. Oo tell them about OFK’s gameplay! Teddy: We Are OFK is a five-episode series, featuring: Fully-voiced interactive dialogue from a star-studded cast Emotional texting, thirst texting, emoji spamming Five Interactive Music Videos premiering new songs by OFK Itsumi: The music videos! I ~can’t~ wait to share our songs with everyone! Teddy: Yesss! We designed the music videos to let players participate visually with the music, so no matter how musical you are (or not), you can feel musical as you play! Itsumi: It’s weird ~ The story is about how our band got together, but as we worked on the game, it kinda feels like the band got bigger. We’re kinda all a band now! The artists, programmers, the actors who voice us in the game! Teddy: We Are All OFK. Itsumi: Lol shut up that’s so dorky. Teddy: We Are all dorky. Itsumi: Okay true. I love this team! Teddy: We love you back. We Are OFK releases for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 in 2022, alongside OFK’s debut E.P. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/-Ioa4oLy0wcView the full article

The dream team that brought you Let It Die — the survival action game that began service in 2016 and has reached seven-million downloads across the globe — strikes again! This time, we’re making a sensation with our take on the multiplayer survival action genre. Greetings to all of you out there looking to release your daily stress and express your crazy inner self to the absolute extreme. We invite you to take part as a contestant in a survival reality game show that has audiences in a frenzy around the world. Play Video In a world set hundreds of years after Let It Die… This game is set in the world after the events of Let It Die, where players fight for stardom in the survival TV reality show Death Jamboree. The show takes place in a virtual world known as the Deathverse, which was created by the Yotsuyama Group as a final destination for people’s souls. With that, I’d like to explain the rules of the game. Death Jamboree is produced and aired by the national television station YBC (Yotsuyama Broadcasting Company). Young people everywhere are attracted to the program via public recruitment sessions and promises of massive prize money. The lucrative cash prizes and thrilling survival gameplay have attracted a fanatical viewing audience, making the program a worldwide phenomenon. Players will take part in the show as ordinary contestants who have appeared on the show to crush their rivals, Thrilling survival/action gameplay centered around close-range attacks As participants in the show, players will face off against a multitude of rivals. Here’s a brief explanation of how this all works: Upon participating in Death Jamboree, all contestants will be outfitted with a special “Wilson” unit, a robotic device that assists you in combat. Wilson units are equipped with a wide range of features made possible by cutting-edge technology. They’re considered a must-have item by well-to-do consumers everywhere. Wilson units can transform into drone and weapon forms, and serve the following roles: Transforming into a weapon when the player attacks an enemy Deploying a protective shield in drone form Shooting electric bullets to stun enemies Activating skills In the trailer, you saw various weapons such as hammers, knives, and katana blades. All of those are additional forms that can be unlocked by upgrading your Wilson. As for how to upgrade…? Well, this will remain a secret for now. Incidentally, as a world-famous program at the top of the ratings, the show has many corporate backers. You’ll find costumes and Wilson units adorned with the mascots and logos of the program’s various sponsors. These also serve to further boost the show’s incredible popularity. Death Jamboree features mainly survival-type battles, but depending on the season, limited-time game modes are also available. Master your favorite weapons, defeat your foes with flashy moves, and thrill the program’s audience and sponsors alike! Become one of this popular show’s star players and set your sights on greater fame and fortune. The battlefield you fight on is contaminated by SPLithium… Let’s take a look at the stages upon which you’ll do battle. The recording studio for Death Jamboree – in other words, the site of your battles – is an uninhabited island that is growing increasingly contaminated with SPLithium, an indispensable, concentrated energy source used in people’s everyday lives. It’s also what powers the Wilson units distributed to the show’s contestants. SPLithium is an extremely convenient energy source, but it transforms into lethally poisonous waste after consumption, meaning that contamination is a serious problem. The stages you’ll do battle on have all been contaminated by SPLithium, and are rumored to be home to mutant plants and bizarre creatures known as UMA. A colorful cast of characters brings the program to life Next, we’ll introduce the stars of the show that appeared in the video: Bryan Zemeckis The head honcho of Death Jamboree. He wears many hats as executive producer, director, event planner, and master of ceremonies. A charismatic figure who charms audiences with his cheerful and witty conversation and commentary, he’s a natural TV star who has won over audiences everywhere. Bryan grew up in a well-to-do family, where he wanted for nothing. It’s said that he took over as producer of Death Jamboree at the special request of a certain individual — though the truth behind the matter remains shrouded in secrecy. QueenB The secondary MC of Death Jamboree. Her true name is Brenda Miller. Both beautiful and skilled, she is a legendary former champion who retired two years ago. A rare case of a commentator who was a truly great contestant in her own day. She came to be known as Queen B due to her elegant appearance as well as her fighting style, and her wealth of experience gives her a unique perspective on the game. She continues to use the name now in her capacity as show staff. As a former contestant”, she often offers encouragement and, at times, advice to players, making her a popular “big sister”-type presence. In fact, though, she carries a secret no one knows of. What’s that? Hunter G In the trailer, you may have noticed a mysterious figure who suddenly appears mid-match. Hunters are invincible predators that appear and chase down fighters to the excitement of the viewing audience. It is said that the hunter’s true identity is that of a legendary assassin who picked off 444 targets during his days as a hired killer. Deathverse is scheduled to release in 2022 and is being developed as a free-to-play title. You’ll be able to customize your fighter with cosmetics that fit your personality and style via in-game purchases or season passes. More details to come. In closing, we’re like to bring you a message from Uncle Death, who you know as the mascot and guide of Let It Die. We’ve received a message from Uncle Death. At last, we’re able to announce this new title, and I for one am thrilled to…er, death! “What we’ve introduced today is only a portion of what makes this game so special, but I think it was more than enough to pique your interest, yes? Huh? It wasn’t, you say. In that case, wise guy, I suggest you watch the trailer every day until you’re properly brainwashed, lol. In any event, the real exciting stuff is still to come, so stay tuned. Some exclusive info might even show up on my YouTube channel. Well, adios for now.” – Uncle Death http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/dTkwqbaY3ooView the full article

Back in 2017, the game that would eventually become Backbone was entirely different: a stealth game in a science fiction setting. During a conference call brainstorming session, the team was interrupted by a crash that came from outside co-founder Nikita Danshin’s home in Vancouver. Raccoons had attacked his composting bin, so to scare them off, Nikita (also the game’s composer) picked up the loudest thing at hand — his trumpet. We were unable to stop laughing about how fun it would be to play as a raccoon strategically stealing people’s garbage, and after a few iterations, Backbone’s world of anthropomorphic animals was born. Left: Character art for the sword-wilding Samson / Right: Final in-game appearance Character designer and senior artist Kristina Dashevskaya worked up concepts for swearing, trench coat-wearing raccoon Howard Lotor. We instantly fell in love with this character, and the rest of the world building stemmed from there. In this world, apes are on top — they are the architects and rulers of society, and they eventually make decisions on where everyone else sits. Lions and bears are slightly below, cats and dogs lower (but still in the upper class), raccoons and foxes are smack dab in the middle, and rodents like mice and rabbits are the working class. Just like in real life, these rules are often broken, but any deviation is looked down upon, while conformity is celebrated. Different neighborhoods are inhabited by clusters of species, so while exploring the world of Backbone, players might notice that subtle segregation. Left: A sketch of the Granville location in Backbone / Right: The final in-game destination Unlike boring humans, with anthropomorphic animals there are so many ways to tell a cohesive story through costume, facial features, tails, and coloring. Species each have a heavy connotation in Backbone’s lore, so every rat and lion comes with a set of inherent stereotypes that characters in the game believe. But apes and hamsters can be the same height and size, and their species is mostly an example of the social construct rather than a set list of biological features. Just like people, we all have different faces and bodies — but it’s the artificial order and economy and propaganda that decides where we’re placed on the social ladder. While Backbone seems like a story about animals, it really is about the human condition and the beauty and pain of our common struggle. We don’t rely on biological determinism in our design and writing — even though the in-world characters do judge others based on their species. The animal factor helps distance ourselves enough to examine and deconstruct these real world biases about real people, but there is a very fragile balancing act of trying to never hit too close home, to not appropriate and to not diminish the real human experience. Left: A sketch of the West End setting in Backbone / Right: Final-in game location Howard Lotor was always supposed to be a raccoon, but throughout the development, we also realized that it’s a perfect choice for a player character. Raccoons are stuck in the middle — not upper class, not lower, they’re being looked down upon by everyone and struggle with their identity. Howard’s story is focused on his identity crisis and transformation, and his relatability is what made it work for us. We’re happy to bring Howard and the world of Backbone to a wider player base by releasing the game on PS4 and PS5, as well as offering a total of nine languages across all platforms beginning October 28. Languages include English, Japanese, French, German, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, and Spanish, and we look forward to seeing how new players experience this deeply personal story across the globe. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/J8jIHrh47c8View the full article

We had planned for Deathloop to have a PvP element from the very beginning. Colt and Julianna’s dynamic is the heart of Deathloop’s story, and we wanted to reflect that in the gameplay as well. And how often do you get the chance to play as both the hero and the villain in games? Obviously, Colt’s journey is the core campaign, but giving players the chance to jump into his story and hunt him as his rival Julianna was such an interesting idea for us. Too interesting to pass up. Play Video When you’re playing as Colt, the invading Julianna can be controlled by either another player or the AI, but this wasn’t always the case. There was a point in development where the game was always online and there was no AI Julianna. After a lot of consideration, this seemed unfair. We wanted players to be able to experience the game in whatever way they prefer, and if that means letting them turn off online invasions, then we needed to make that happen. This is just one of the many things we had to consider as we developed the PvP. We knew we needed to build a fair, fun, and challenging experience for Colt, and we needed to avoid the invasions becoming a nuisance. Of course, we also wanted to create a fun experience for Julianna players and try to highlight the pleasure of the hunt more than the pleasure of winning the match. Julianna’s Masquerade ability in the dev test environment For Colt players, this meant adding in the Reprise ability, allowing Colt to “rewind” time if he dies. Julianna doesn’t have Reprise, so it certainly gives our Colt players an edge. We also needed to include the opportunity to avoid Julianna altogether by hacking the antenna and exiting the map. We didn’t want Colt players to feel forced into an encounter, especially if they were concerned about losing valuable gear. Julianna has some tricks up her sleeve that make her a fierce opponent, but we created balance by making it so that if Colt is playing as stealthy as possible, he’s pretty damn hard to track down. To balance things for Julianna players and incentivize choosing to play as the hunter, we gave her some unique reward options. The feats system allows Julianna to rank up by completing specific actions during the mission, meaning she doesn’t need to win a match in order to progress and earn rewards like weapons, abilities, upgrades and even character skins for her and Colt. We wanted this mode to be a fun addition, not a competition, which is also why we made the deliberate choice to not include leaderboards for the invasions. But with all of Colt’s advantages, we had to circle back to how to make things fair for both players. That’s how the cross-alert system was born. Julianna can receive information about Colt’s whereabouts from NPCs and security devices, and she can also alert NPCs to Colt’s location. We had two main goals for the PvP. The first goal is the break the pattern in the game as players are exploring the maps or completing missions. When Julianna arrives in the map – be it another player or the AI – the pace of the game suddenly changes and you (as Colt) need to reevaluate your plan. Do you seek her out and fight her head-on? Do you sneak through the map carefully, avoiding detection? Or do you flee without accomplishing your objective? There’s so much to consider as Colt – from the amount of Reprise charges you have left to the gear you could lose if you don’t make it out of your face-off with Julianna alive. Of course, there are also the high value rewards you receive if you do beat Julianna – all of your Reprise charges refilled, a huge amount of Residuum, a high-tier weapon, a new ability or an ability upgrade… You’ll want to weigh all your options and decide the best course of action. The second goal is to make each encounter unpredictable and unique. We love that we have all of these systems in our games that make it so even we as the developers don’t know what players are going to do. Adding PvP to Deathloop was an incredible opportunity for us to see what our players are capable of. AI behaviors can be anticipated or tricked. Human behaviors can’t be. That’s probably the main reason we decided to allow players to embody the protagonist’s nemesis. And to be honest, being able to take on the role of the main villain of a story is really cool! Haven’t had a chance to experience the PvP for yourself yet? Jump into Deathloop’s Protect the Loop mode to play as Julianna and earn outfits for both characters. Check out Deathloop now, available on PS5. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/Bm7O1xIftMMView the full article

Hi, my name is Erik Odeldahl and I’m the creative director at VR game developer & publisher Fast Travel Games. Welcome to the Afterlife. Tomorrow, the doors to the Barclay Mansion will open for all you PlayStation VR players out there. In our horror and exploration game Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife, you need to enter the place where you met your ultimate demise and find out the reason why you died, while revealing a much bigger mystery. You do this as a Wraith – one of the restless undead – now with supernatural abilities and with your dark subconscious as the in-game guide and narrator. Be ready though; The Barclay Mansion is a place filled with Hollywood decadence and occult secrets and you need to be careful, you will not be alone there… Play Video With Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife, we have tried to create a horror experience that focuses on tense atmosphere and rewards exploration. We are also moving away from the traditional jump scares and environments like gothic castles or haunted houses. Searching through the opulent Barclay Mansion, you need to use stealth and the surroundings themselves to progress and find the answers that you are looking for. As you progress in the game, you will learn Wraith abilities such as Sharpened Senses that help you track your objective and the movement of other spirits, Wraithgrasp that lets you pick up heavy objects from a distance and Insubstantiality, that grants you the power to walk through solid walls. There are also items you will find to aid you, like a camera to reveal memories in the mansion and a flashlight that has more than one use… The game is made exclusively for the PlayStation Move controllers, so you need to use your arms and hands to play with the powers and items at your disposal. Being a Wraith does not mean that you are safe from harm. Even though your powers eventually enable you to walk through solid walls and manipulate items from a distance, there are sinister beings inside the Barclay Mansion that wish you no good at all… These evil spirits are called Spectres, and every Spectre has its own backstory and connection to the bigger mystery in the game for you to reveal. Afterlife is an official World of Darkness game, which means it shares the universe with other popular games like Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: The Apocalypse. The World of Darkness is an entire supernatural world hidden in plain sight, where monsters of many different kinds are living among us. In this world, you are the monster, the anti-hero afraid of what you’re capable of should you give in to your inner conflicts. This conflict is presented in our game through a character called ‘the Shadow’. You know that little voice in the back of your head telling you to do things you really shouldn’t do? For a Wraith, that voice is all too real. A manifestation of your dark subconscious, the Shadow will be your in-game companion and narrator. The Shadow speaks to you, reveals things that might sometimes be helpful – but maybe you shouldn’t trust everything it says? If you are new to the World of Darkness, fear not: The story and the setting in Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife have been created from scratch, and you do not need any previous experience with this universe to fully enjoy our game. I have enjoyed many horror games on PS VR myself and could not be prouder to finally add our own game to this amazing genre on the platform. We have worked tirelessly to optimize the game for PS VR, bringing in real-time shadows, higher resolution on textures, and more, while also custom-creating the way you move around in the game to match the PS Move controllers. Do you dare to become a Wraith and enter the Barclay Mansion tomorrow? http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/6FablGtVVVUView the full article

Hello everyone! Over the last few months, we have been having a great time seeing you play Returnal and learning about your experiences, and hearing all the great stories of how players are overcoming the myriad challenges of Atropos. It’s had a fantastic reception, and we are truly pleased and grateful to see people having so much fun with the game. Here at Housemarque we’ve been listening to all your feedback too, and so it is with great satisfaction that I’m here to announce our update 2.0, launching today. Play Video Suspend Cycle One of the main features of this update is the Suspend Cycle functionality, which will allow you to pause your cycle to be continued later, letting you exit the game and turn off your console without losing your progress in that session. The structure of the game remains unchanged, so this functionality is not a traditional mid-game “Save Game” option: by suspending the cycle, Returnal will simply create a single use suspend point, and once you resume playing the suspend point is deleted and cannot be used again. Your game will continue directly from the moment you left it, and if you want to suspend the cycle again, your progress will be captured from that new point onwards. There are some limitations in place – for example, players won’t be able to create a suspend point during Boss battles, cinematics, first-person sequences or during intense combat scenarios – as we felt there are certain moments in Returnal that are best experienced unfragmented to preserve the intended challenge and flow. With this approach, we can keep the roguelike spirit and “high stakes” commitment to your run intact, while still providing some quality-of-life convenience for players who like to experience Returnal in shorter bursts. So next time you’re deep into a lengthy session on Atropos and life comes knocking at your door, you’ll be able to simply Suspend Cycle and jump back in at a more convenient time. Photo Mode Along with the Suspend functionality, we have also been working on another feature that’s been highly requested by the community and will also be included in this update: Photo Mode. Selene’s journey through Atropos is filled with many memorable moments that are worth cherishing; whether it’s dancing on the knife’s edge amidst intense bullet hell combat, or taking a fleeting moment of serenity to appreciate the eerie atmosphere and dark beauty of Atropos, our Photo Mode will allow you to immortalize these moments in all their glory. At any point during the game (except some limited circumstances like our first-person sequences), you can simply pause the game and enter Photo Mode, which will put you in control of the camera. You can then use the analog sticks and the adaptive triggers to move the camera around and pick the perfect angle for your photo. Once you’ve perfected your composition, you can then explore some optional settings like focal distance, aperture, saturation or contrast. You can also set different sources of light to highlight the scene, and choose from a variety of many different filters, effects, frames, coloring options, and much more to help bring that unique flair to your captures. When you’re happy with the result, just hit the Create button on your DualSense wireless controller to take the photo. Using the social features built directly into the PS5 console, you can also share and celebrate your most cherished Returnal moments with social media as well. We hope you have fun with the Photo Mode, and we are looking forward to seeing your creations! http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/gZ9WR07UbScView the full article

The Call of Duty franchise has always been about great gunplay, underlined by the diversity of weapon classes and multiples of attachments creating a vast breadth of options to choose from before heading into battle. But experienced players know it’s more than how much damage a particular weapon does, or how quickly the downsight speed of another allows you to strengthen your K/D ratio – – how a weapon feels to a particular player has as much to do with success as anything. At Sledgehammer Games, we’re happy to let PlayStation 5 players know about how Call of Duty: Vanguard is going to leverage the features of the DualSense wireless controller to elevate the sense of immersion and bring an array of tactile experiences to different weapons in the game. In a game about warfare on a global scale, the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers of the DualSense controller provide us an opportunity to bring that experience to life like no prior generation of console could. Here are some examples of what PS5 players can expect to experience on Call of Duty: Vanguard when it launches on November 5: The Art of the Trigger Pull Our goal in Call of Duty: Vanguard was to simulate the trigger weight of real-world weapons, and to give the player the opportunity to find the trigger pull that works for them in the game. This is greatly aided by the feedback applied by the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers. There are several stages of a trigger pull in the game: the “take-up” or distance a trigger travels once a player starts to press it. Then there’s the “break” – – or the point at which the shot is fired once a correct amount of pressure is applied. Then there’s the “over-travel” which is how far the trigger pulls after the break point, and finally, the “trigger reset”, which stops automatic firing and resets the break. It’s at the “break” stage that the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers apply varying degrees of feedback to help create the feeling of weight on the trigger. This feedback is applied differently for different weapons, creating a more accurate sense of trigger weight for each. For instance, if you’re running around with a 1911 sidearm you’ll feel a moderate amount of tension as you get to the break point, but it won’t hold the same weight as that M1 Garand marksman rifle: Additionally, what this means is that you are really going to feel the power of your LMG as you’re blasting through those doors and walls in Vanguard’s new reactive environments … Much more than you would, say, the fast, rolling jolts as you’re spraying fire into an enemy’s direction with your SMG or even an AR, like the STG: Finally, the feedback applied by the DualSense controller doesn’t just impact the firing trigger in Vanguard, but the scope trigger as well, meaning the downsight speed and L2 trigger weight changes based upon what weapon you’re wielding. For example. heavy weapons will feel heavy, lighter weapons will feel light, and everything in between. Plus, the attachments you have on your weapon will play a role in this as well, so it’s a factor to consider as you’re making your selections. In the end, the player will find variety in weapon feel, will find new variables to work with in weapon tuning, and will have the ability to add new attachments that change how the trigger reacts, the force of the feedback, and the downsight speed. The ability to do this with the DualSense controller has not only allowed us to add a new degree of tactical decision-making for players when building their perfect loadouts, but helps to increase the sense of immersion in the overall experience. And in the case any players decide these features aren’t for them in a particular circumstance, they can be turned on or off in real time the game’s Settings. Haptic Feedback and the Sensations of Combat The realism of the weapon feel isn’t the only thing that will set playing Call of Duty: Vanguard apart on the PS5 and add to the visceral experience of global warfare. As you traverse the multiple fronts of WWII, the explosive elements of combat are not just experienced through sight and sound, but tactilely as well. Throughout the Campaign and Multiplayer, there will be moments that the chaos of war is on full display, and with the help of haptic feedback in the DualSense controller you will feel the action happening around you pulse through your hands and traverse up your arms. So when enemy fire is tearing through your cover, you will feel the impacts of the bursts and debris around you: Or when the Luftwaffe rains down it’s fury as you’re sprinting for your life in Stalingrad, you will feel the thud of the heavy explosions, adding to the chaos of the moment: It is moments like these that help to set Call of Duty: Vanguard apart as a WWII experience like never before, and one that reaches a new level of immersion on PS5. We’re beyond excited for PS5 players to get to experience the game for themselves in just a few short days. Don’t forget to pre-order today and receive several bonuses, like the ability to get the Ghost of War Ultra Skin for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone for free by pre-ordering Vanguard through November 2. Rise on every front. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/5GapoJrdlvwView the full article

Hi everyone! I’m Stephen Rhodes, narrative lead on Call of Duty: Vanguard. With me is Robert Lo, senior narrative designer at Sledgehammer Games. We’re excited to be able to give PlayStation players an even deeper look at the human element that makes up the heart of Call of Duty: Vanguard, especially as the game’s release quickly approaches on November 5. Below we provide insight into a couple of the lead characters from Vanguard’s single-player Campaign, who will also be playable in Multiplayer: Arthur Kingsley and Polina Petrova. Then, we debut a couple of characters from Vanguard’s Multiplayer we have yet to detail anywhere else: Daniel Take Yatsu and Padmavati Balan. We will also be showcasing for the first time the Operator Bio videos for these four characters. With that, let’s jump in. The Humanity at the Heart of Call of Duty: Vanguard Vanguard’s campaign is a story about a group of diverse soldiers who put aside their differences for a common cause: stopping a secret Nazi plot in the final days of WWII. Their mission also represents the origins of a new kind of combat unit that moved and fought unlike any one before it: the Special Forces. Even though it’s a larger-than-life story, at Vanguard’s heart is a universal experience many of us have lived: finishing a tough job with a band of coworkers you didn’t choose and making true friendships and lasting bonds along the way. Writing Vanguard’s campaign was a meaningful and rewarding experience for all of us on the narrative team. I’ve always had an interest in WWII, and it was exciting to do in-depth research with our fantastic historical consultant Marty Morgan. With his boundless knowledge, we were able to uncover many of the lesser-known stories and heroes to draw inspiration from. As writers, we also had the opportunity to write the distinct voices of characters who came from very specific locales at a specific moment in history. For our British characters, that meant we had to delve into the Britishisms of the era, and for our Australian lead character, Lucas Riggs, it meant exploring the truly broad canvas of Aussie language. Each of our heroes has a singular way of talking that sounds uniquely like them, and that’s the result of some careful research and close listening. Our goal was to tell a unique and refreshing story set within the conflict. While there might be elements of history you’re familiar with, this is a story that is unique to Call of Duty. Today we’re extremely excited to share with you details about some of Vanguard’s characters, and provide insight into how we created their distinct personalities. We’ll discuss who these characters are, what they mean to us, and how they fit into Vanguard’s overall narrative. We’re going to focus our time on four of our heroic operators. Two you will meet during Vanguard’s epic campaign, and the other two can be found only within our diverse Multiplayer roster. Let’s get started! The Stories Behind Four Multiplayer Operators Arthur Arthur Kingsley is the leader of the Special Operations Task Force sent into Germany to uncover the truth surrounding Projekt Phoenix. What’s exceptional about Arthur as a leader is not his ability to commit violence or kill people, but rather his unwavering devotion to the mission and his compassion for his fellow soldiers. He takes his role as a leader to heart and believes his responsibility is to ensure that everyone comes back alive. The fear of losing soldiers under his command made Arthur reluctant to lead, but the mission’s importance led him to accept his role and embrace his true calling. It was important to us that Arthur be the main protagonist, and that you experience the story of Vanguard through his perspective. We wanted him to be smart and charismatic, as well as brave and heroic. His background is unique, and we worked with numerous cultural and historical consultants to give Arthur a distinct origin. Born in Cameroon, educated in England, and serving as a British paratrooper for most of the war, Arthur is truly a man of the world. He was the character we conceived first and what lies at the heart of his character was present from the beginning. Play Video Also, as a heads up to anyone already playing Black Ops Cold War and Warzone, if you pre-order Vanguard you will get immediate access to play as Arthur in those two titles*. Polina Polina Petrova is another member of the Task Force sent into Germany, but there’s more at stake for her than just completing the mission. An infamous sniper of legend, Polina was feared by the Nazis and idolized by the Russian soldiers who fought to defend their home. Polina’s story is distinct in that she’s the only character in our story that didn’t enlist and leave home to fight. The war came to her. There’s a lot of intense emotional threads that run through Polina’s narrative. Her story isn’t just about revenge for what happened to her home and her family. It’s a story about loss, displacement, grief, but also prejudice. Throughout her story we learn about Polina’s origins as a nurse who wanted to fight, and we get to experience that transformation of character in a way we don’t with any other character. Play Video During our pre-production research we learned about the women who fought on the Eastern Front, and especially of the incredible female snipers who gave the Nazis hell as they advanced through Russia. We knew we wanted to feature a character who took inspiration from all of the brave women who fought and died to protect their home. Once we had settled on Stalingrad as a setting for her levels, the character of Polina started to take shape. When we think of war, we often only visualize highly-trained soldiers with weapons on a battlefield. We forget this war affected the entire world, especially those on the home fronts. Polina grew up in Stalingrad as a quiet, family girl – compassionate, strong, and loving. She was never raised a solider, but embodied a soldier’s tenacity, always eager to participate in the war effort where needed. Though we meet Polina as the most straightforward, vengeful, bloodthirsty member of Vanguard, it reminds us that the war stole innocence and happiness from so many. Polina was just one of those victims and is determined to make her enemies pay for their villainy. Daniel In the movies, there’s often the classic archetype of the cold and unfeeling sniper, calmly dispatching targets one by one. Daniel’s no slouch as a sniper, but we wanted to depict him as a protector who uses his marksmanship to support his fellow soldiers. His story is also deeply rooted in one of the most shameful chapters of American history: the internment of Japanese citizens in US concentration camps during WWII. Daniel’s entire world was torn apart when his family was sent to the camps, and like many Japanese Americans, he was drafted into the army to protect a nation who did not consider him an equal citizen. Daniel’s feelings about the war and his nation are deeply ambivalent, but he still fights to protect his fellow soldiers and for the nation he believes America could still be one day. Play Video Padmavati Padmavati is a woman who lost her homeland twice: once to colonialists, and then to fascists. Her story is that of a woman whose hope and opportunity for a normal life abruptly vanished when unceasing conflict became a fact of her existence. Her character is defined by this duality between fighter and peaceful civilian: Padmavati is a fierce soldier adept at jungle warfare, but also a battle-weary nurse who loves to perform poetry and music. Because she understands the true costs of spilled blood, she eschews a romantic view of warfare, but won’t hesitate to demonstrate courage and leadership on the battlefield when called. She dreams of an India whose fate is determined by the will of its own people and is convinced that they will one day prevail. Play Video These four characters are just a few of the many that Vanguard brings to light in both its Campaign and Multiplayer modes. Our goal was to give a backstory to the faces that made up the world’s greatest conflict, and to showcase their humanity as they fight to save it. We’re incredibly excited for PlayStation players to experience these stories for themselves when Vanguard launches in just a couple of weeks, on November 5. Rise on every front. *Offer content and availability may vary by region and is subject to change. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War/Call of Duty: Warzone on PS4 or PS5 required to redeem offer, sold/downloaded separately. The open world of Horizon Zero Dawn is a true playground for players. Gallop through the wilds on your trusty Charger to take in the lush environments and vibrant settlements. Embrace your inner hunter and sneak through bandit camps, taking down enemies silently and disable any means for them to call for back-up. Or climb to the highest mountains for gorgeous views and mysterious Old World secrets… Horizon Forbidden West, our upcoming sequel and continuation of Aloy’s action-packed adventure, is built on the same principles of player freedom; in fact, it was important to the team at Guerrilla to offer even more ways to explore and experience the world. Spoiler Alert: Please note this article contains some spoilers for Horizon Zero Dawn and its storyline. Travel through the Forbidden West In the gameplay trailer, you’ll have seen Aloy using a variety of new tools in the Forbidden West. “Building upon the foundation of Horizon Zero Dawn, we have added a number of new ways to move through the world,” says David McMullen, Lead Systems Designer at Guerrilla. “Aloy can climb freely on and across huge sections of rocky terrain; even more machine types can be used as mounts; grapple points can be found throughout the environment which allows agile vertical traversal; swimming underwater has opened up a whole new aspect of exploration; and gliding with the Shieldwing provides the ultimate view of the beautiful world of Horizon Forbidden West – not to mention a quick way down from great heights!” https://gfycat.com/fragrantneglectedargusfish Captured on PS5 Before we dive deeper into some of these new mechanics, David will share some insights about the development process, the challenges that come with it, and why it was a goal for the team to increase the amount of player freedom throughout Aloy’s adventure. “Our traversal design decisions were always in service of increasing dynamic interactivity with the world around you. This could be to empower the player to manipulate and destroy their environment with a tool like the Pullcaster; or grapple-launching into a glide with the Shieldwing to set yourself up for a strike from above. What excites us most is how our mechanics, new and old, synergistically interact with each other to provide varied and dynamic approaches to any scenario.’ https://gfycat.com/commonmemorablecockerspaniel ‘This wide array of new options also posed challenges to how we think about level design. We need to allow for players to outsmart us, using new moves or tools to bypass some of our challenges in clever and unpredictable ways. Traversal puzzles won’t always have a binary solution; we encourage players to experiment and have fun with the new tools. We will offer a variety of challenges, regardless of playstyle or skill or previous experience in Horizon Zero Dawn.” And of course, the new features of the PlayStation 5 hardware presented another exciting challenge. While Horizon Forbidden West is developed and published for both PS4 and PS5 from the ground up, there are some highlights for those who will play on the latter console. “The DualSense wireless controller is heavily featured throughout our mechanics,” David says. “From the scrape of rubble as you push a crate, to the sensation of an unravelling winch as you use the Pullcaster — with the increased adaptive trigger tension as you pull! We’ve also added extra tactile dimensions to increase both the gameplay value and the feeling of being part of the world Aloy is moving around in; these can be subtle as the sensation of grass brushing around you to indicate you are entering stealth grass, or the pop of the adaptive trigger as you reach maximum draw with a bow. We even use the absence of adaptive tension to help communicate when you’re out of ammo.” Immersive exploration Our Horizon community loves discovering new areas and climbing up high vantage points; to this day they share lots of images, videos, and memories of their adventures in-game! This level of immersive exploration was naturally something the team at Guerrilla took to heart during development of the sequel, David mentions. “The free climbing system in Horizon Forbidden West is a huge feature we are extremely excited about, as it has allowed us to make large sections of the terrain climbable (where it makes sense visually and narratively) in a way not previously possible in Horizon Zero Dawn. Rocky surfaces in these areas are freely climbable without the use of tribal handholds!’ https://gfycat.com/frighteninginsistentbluefish Captured on PS5 ‘Another addition was the high vault traversal mechanic, which essentially allows Aloy to hoist herself on top of any object of jumpable height with room to pull up. Combined with the ability to free climb and adding grapples to our environment, the potential for exploration is greatly increased.” Two other reveals from the Horizon Forbidden West gameplay trailer that have fans – and Guerrillas – very excited are the previously mentioned Pullcaster and Shieldwing: new tools at Aloy’s disposal to make her more agile during both exploration and the inevitable battles she’ll be fighting in the West. “The Pullcaster is a mechanical wrist-mounted device with two separate functions,” David explains. “The first function is a grapple mechanic, allowing the player to swiftly and easily ascend the environment and providing a dynamic traversal/escape option to the player toolkit. When grappling, the player can activate the launch — throwing them into the air, where they can grab a higher ledge, fire their bow, glide, strike-from-above or even grapple to a further point.’ ‘The second function of the Pullcaster is a winch, meaning the player can dynamically manipulate, move and destroy the objects in the environments. Think about pulling a hidden loot chest from a ledge, or tearing open a vent to create a new climb path.” “The Shieldwing was always a team favorite, it provides not only the most exhilarating way to return from an epic climb but also the most picturesque! This tool is invaluable with having so much more verticality, where backtracking down the same trail holds less of an appeal as on the way up.’ https://gfycat.com/ignorantskinnyhalcyon ‘Hopefully players appreciate this level of freedom, as well as new gameplay, combat and exploration opportunities. The Shieldwing combines well with numerous other mechanics both in and out of combat, such as landing on your mount, ziplining, the strike from above skill, and more…” A majestic but dangerous frontier While exploration and traversing around the world all sound idyllic, the Forbidden West is also full of danger, with many unknown enemies and a roster of new machines for Aloy to deal with. It’s imperative to have the right weapons, ammunition, and skills available for when you stumble upon an enemy base, or an angry Tremortusk… As with traversal, it was similarly important to evolve combat design further from Horizon Zero Dawn, and build on the principles of player freedom and choice in an open world. With new combat mechanics, enemy types, and weapon variation (to name a few aspects), players can easily assess a dangerous situation and choose how to enter a combat scenario – then actively swap between combat tactics. https://gfycat.com/elaboratescholarlyisabellinewheatear Guerrilla’s Lead Combat Designer, Dennis Zopfi, shares how the team expanded its key features in Horizon Forbidden West. “One of the focus points that influenced all our combat decisions was increased player choice, and we applied this to everything: melee, weapons, outfits, skills and other new mechanics. We wanted to give players more tools, depth and dials to play with.’ ‘One entirely new concept in Horizon Forbidden West is the workbench, where you can upgrade and strengthen weapons and outfits. This unlocks new perks, mod slots, skills, and offers a bigger degree of customization, resistances, and new abilities for players!” Another way to upgrade Aloy’s abilities is through the skill tree. “In Horizon Zero Dawn, skills were bought and unlocked as you levelled up,” Dennis explains. “While that principle remains in the sequel, we completely redesigned the skill tree with additional tracks and skills; within the skill tree, skills also synergize with those that are either already present on outfits or need to be unlocked on them.” If you read our previous blog on Aloy , you’ll have learned about how character development has multiple teams involved; the Combat team also plays a huge role in her evolution. Dennis agrees: “We always start with the character and how we want the player to perceive her during gameplay. In Aloy’s case this means traits like smart, fast, agile, precise, and resourceful; our role is to translate these into game mechanics. Of course having launched Horizon Zero Dawn already, we had a base to start from, so for Horizon Forbidden West we looked at where these traits can come through stronger or maybe what could be added. There are the direct combat mechanics, like shooting and melee, but also indirect ones, like the skills, outfits, upgrades, and weapon techniques. It is a nice design challenge to make all these behind the scenes systems work together in the engine.” New weapons and tools And it’s not just Aloy who’s evolved since Horizon Zero Dawn. The Forbidden West is a majestic yet dangerous frontier with many mysterious threats that Aloy might encounter. This creates an additional goal for Dennis and the teams to make sure she has the right weapons and tools available to handle these battles. https://gfycat.com/delightfulemptyflicker “We wanted to bring melee and ranged combat closer together,” says Dennis. “Aloy is not a character who deals with brute force, so we were looking for ways to have the player go back and forth between melee and range, where she could use her precise bow skills to work towards a big payoff moment. A new example of a skill that does this is the Resonator Blast, where you charge up the spear with melee hits and when fully powered up, the energy can be placed on enemies (humans and machines alike) and followed up with a projectile – resulting in a big damaging explosion!’ ‘Then there is the Valor Surge feature; there are 12 in total, with each of them representing and strengthening a specific approach to the game. You unlock and upgrade them through the skill tree with skill points. There are three levels of each Valor Surge: the higher the level, the longer the charge up, but the more powerful the attack.’ “This level is shown on the purple bar you could see during the gameplay trailer: you’ll receive more Valor – or charge up that bar – through skillful actions such as hitting weak spots on enemies or removing components. In the video you could see Aloy perform the Radial Blast on the burly Tenakth warrior. ’ “It was also important to reward players who go into a melee situation, as it’s very dangerous to be so close to enemies, especially the machines! If you are skilled and daring, you can do some really good damage with these new features – just be careful!” Aside from these encounters, there’s another level of combat skill needed now that some enemy factions can mount machines. Players will have to keep a close eye on both the enemy mount and its rider, according to Dennis. “In Horizon Zero Dawn, machine and humanoid encounters were very separate; they never really operated as a group against Aloy. The world has changed in Horizon Forbidden West, with more danger, more enemy factions, and more machines – and they can now fight together in groups, which poses a real challenge for our hero, and the player.’ https://gfycat.com/villainousdetailedkilldeer “When it comes to mounted combat, the player will have to adapt and decide whom to take out first and in what most effective way; human enemies have weapons, attacks, and abilities that machines don’t and vice versa, so they complement each other in these encounters; keeping you on your toes!” In the gameplay trailer, Aloy has a host of new weapons at her disposal. Familiar weapons like the Hunter Bow, Sharpshot Bow, and the Blast Sling will of course return, but there are plenty of new weapons to try out too. “The goal for the weapons in Horizon Forbidden West was to give each of them a stronger personality, which is also expressed in how you have to handle them,” Dennis smiles. “Each weapon has their strengths and weaknesses in terms of the ideal situations to use them in.’ “The Spike Thrower, for example, is a new, high damage weapon which, when thrown at the right moment, makes it easier to hit larger targets. For elemental damage, such as fire or adhesive, you can choose to stick with the Blast Sling, and so forth. Each weapon comes with different perks, ammo types, and weapon coil slots to customize them further — though some weapons need to be upgraded first before you can make them stronger.” More freedom and dynamic gameplay As both David and Dennis have demonstrated, increased player freedom and player choice was absolutely at the heart of Horizon Forbidden West’s development cycle: “There’s a number of other subtle yet impactful additions that enable more dynamic gameplay,” summarizes David. “Just to name a few examples: Aloy can wall jump, leap away from a climb surface, high vault, and more. While these might sound like small things, combined they make for engaging environmental challenges and more player options.” Dennis attests to that: “We put a lot of effort into creating more choice and depth for the players, and are super excited to see how people will play as Aloy with so many new possibilities of skills, weapons and gear she can obtain throughout the mysterious Forbidden West. We had a lot of fun creating cool and powerful combinations for players to discover, and we hope people will enjoy the game when it launches!” For more information on Horizon Forbidden West, please visit here.
