  1. Hello, Kingdom Hearts fans! I can’t believe this day is finally here! We’re extremely excited to launch Kingdom Hearts III on PlayStation 4 today. Sora and his friends have grown a tremendous amount since his story first began in Kingdom Hearts. As we head into the launch of Kingdom Hearts III, he’s become an incredibly strong and bright character supported by his trusty companions, Donald and Goofy, and his many friends he’s made over the course of the series. Sora’s journey is really a tale of the power of friendship, and how friends can come together to overcome hardship, support each other through difficult times and spread positivity within a dark world. As you get started in Kingdom Hearts III you’ll be able to adventure through an array of new worlds and make new friends from iconic Walt Disney Animation Studios films like Frozen and Pixar Animation Studios films including Toy Story, Monsters, Inc. and more. You’ll also be able to enjoy a variety of new and exciting features like the Attractions which build on the series iconic gameplay. Personally, I hope that fans will enjoy the updated Gummiship gameplay — I’m having a blast building new ships! It has been an honor to be a part of this series from the beginning. To think that it all started from a conversation in an elevator when Square Enix Japan was in the same building as Disney! I have so many fond memories surrounding Kingdom Hearts, from working on the games to meeting fans around the world at events. As I mentioned earlier, Kingdom Hearts has always been about the power of friendship, and the passion and positivity of the series’ fans demonstrates that it is a message they have taken to heart. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your support and for following along on Sora’s incredible journey. We hope you enjoy what we’ve created for you! In closing, I’d like to leave you with my favorite quote: “My friends are my power!” Sincerely, Executive Producer, Shinji Hashimoto View the full article
  2. Discover The Creators is a PlayStation Store curation program in which we’ve asked some of the biggest names in the biz to pick their favorite PS4 games in order to help your find your next game to play. What I love about video games is how they can achieve a type of magic by combining art with technology to create powerful new experiences. But I don’t really consume a ton of different games. Instead I find a few each year that really move me, and I obsess about them — first immersing myself in the experience, and then trying to figure out how they work. From playing games as a little kid to leading a dev studio, it’s always been the same exercise: if a game casts a powerful spell over me, maybe if I learn how they did it, I could create magical new experiences for others? Here are some games that in their own ways captivated me — as a player and as a developer. Browse Casey’s Full List at PlayStation Store Inside I loved Playdead’s Limbo so I was really looking forward to Inside, and it exceeded my expectations. What impressed me so much about Inside is how it so seamlessly weaves clever gameplay mechanics and dramatic visuals to create a thought-provoking narrative. There are some particularly powerful instances of this, like a sequence where you must conform your movements to the behavior of a group to proceed. It has some moments of visual storytelling that will stay with me forever, and when it was all over Inside left me wondering about the higher meaning of what I experienced. Until Dawn I don’t play many survival horror games, but a friend recommended Until Dawn and I really enjoyed it. It’s scary, but not excessively gory or manipulative, and it builds an immersive story experience through interesting character moments and atmospheric tension. And yes, it scared the hell out of me more than a few times! It’s tough to evoke fear in a player without resorting to cheap scares, and I think Until Dawn does it well, through consistently strong execution — from the art direction and acting performances (including Rami Malek) to its novel approach to visualizing player decisions through the butterfly effect. It’s a game that I still come back to now and then, when I’m playing in the dark late at night and want to see if it can still creep me out. Grand Theft Auto V I’ve played every GTA and enjoyed them all, but never played very far into the story. I just had fun with them as open-world sandboxes. At first I did the same with GTAV, but the world itself was so huge and well-executed, I wanted to get the most out of the game and started pursuing the storyline. It’s the first GTA that I ever finished, and I think it doesn’t get enough credit for the quality of storytelling and narrative innovations it delivers. Even now, it’s still my go-to game for when I just want to relax and escape to a digital world. Thimbleweed Park For me this one captures a different kind of magic: nostalgia. As a kid I played a lot of point and click adventure games, so I was excited to play a new one by a legend of the genre, Ron Gilbert. It’s got lots of quirky puzzles, and tons of memorable characters with funny writing and great voice acting. But what makes it really special is how it recreates the best elements of the genre while subtly introducing new design and creative elements that make it feel contemporary. Unravel 2 I played through all of Unravel 2 with my 10-year old son, and it was probably the most rewarding co-op game experience I’ve ever had. Its clever yarn-swinging mechanic provides some really challenging puzzles, but they’re so well-tuned that we never got stuck. We figured out how to proceed by experimenting cooperatively, and the experimenting itself was fun to do. Much of what I loved about the game was the problem-solving chatter it provoked between my son and I. And in between the tougher challenges we appreciated the joyful movement system and gorgeous artwork. Unravel 2 got us talking about the symbolism of the experience and the topics it subtly explored about childhood (bullying, siblings, loneliness…) and it’s one of my favorite examples of the power of games as an art form. Head over to PlayStation Store now to browse Casey’s list as well as picks curated by Cory Barlog, Yoko Taro, Ed Boon, and more. View the full article
  3. Today, we’re excited to introduce the officially licensed Seagate Game Drive for PlayStation 4 systems. The new Game Drive gives PS4 gamers an extra boost in storage, with amazingly simple portability that allows you to carry your games with you. Seagate Game Drive for PS4 | More Photos Our new Game Drive for PS4 has been rigorously tested and is optimized for PS4 systems. It features a small sleek design and branding that pairs well with your PS4. Most of all, the large increase in storage capacity lets you hang on to your favorite older titles and add-ons while still leaving room for new games. With a hefty 2TB capacity, you can free up space on your PS4 system’s internal drive and consolidate approximately 50* games into a single location. (Do note, once content is stored on the drive, the content can only be accessed by the account that transferred the content.) The Seagate Game Drive enhances the players’ gaming experience with easy installation, and direct connection via USB cable. Setup is easy, since the PS4 automatically recognizes your Game Drive and helps get it up and running in approximately three minutes. Here are some of my favorite benefits of the Seagate Game Drive for PS4: Instantly adds 2TB for approximately 50 more games* Full-speed gaming, just like playing from the PS4 system’s internal drive Optimized to work with every model of PS4 (requires system software version 4.50 or greater) Easy to bring to a friend’s place to play your games on another PS4 system (do note, once content is stored on the drive, the content can only be accessed by the account that transferred the content) Truly plug-and-play; doesn’t require additional cables Doesn’t need to plug into the wall — USB powered The new Game Drive for PS4 is available next week in North America for $89.99 USD (MSRP) / $119.99 CAD (MSRP) — look for it at your favorite retailers and online. Check out Seagate.com for more details. *Based on an average storage requirement of 39GB for PS4 games published on or before June 2018. View the full article
  4. Hey, True Believers! Christos Gage here, one of the writers of Marvel’s Spider-Man, available exclusively on PlayStation 4 – and more than a few Spidey-related comics like the recent Spider-Geddon event which our web-slinger starred in. If you’ve seen all the Easter Eggs in the game, you’ve probably surmised that I, like the rest of the team, am a gigantic and longtime comic book fan. Which is why I was so excited by Marvel’s tease on January the 8th that the fabulous Fantastic Four are back in the spotlight – and back in Marvel Games – as part of Marvel’s “World’s Greatest Week.” To celebrate, we’ve been working with Insomniac Games to include some fantastic content, available in today’s patch 1.14 for Marvel’s Spider-Man on PlayStation 4! “But what do the Fantastic Four have to do with Spider-Man?” you may ask. Or maybe you don’t – because you know that Spidey has a long history with the Fantastic Four, going back to 1963’s Amazing Spider-Man #1, when our rookie wall-crawler tried to join the team – only to end up fighting them! That was just the beginning of many years of adventure (including the 2010 Spider-Man/Fantastic Four miniseries written by yours truly and drawn by Mario Alberti) that has led us to today, with the new Fantastic Four comic written by longtime Spidey-scribe and game story contributor Dan Slott. There have been too many cool Spidey/Fantastic Four moments to count, but one of the most memorable in their illustrious history was in Amazing Spider-Man #258, when Spidey swung by the Fantastic Four’s headquarters for help with the alien symbiote he was wearing as a costume (that’s right, it later became Venom). The Fantastic Four got it off, but then Spidey was left in his underpants (we’d never do something that silly in the game…wait, I’m being told we did). So Spidey borrowed a Fantastic Four costume…but they don’t have masks! So, to conceal Peter Parker’s secret identity, his frenemy, the Human Torch, gave Spidey a grocery bag to wear on his head. As The Thing might say, what a revoltin’ development! Another chapter in their shared story came when Spidey actually joined the Fantastic Four, then calling themselves the Future Foundation, and they all wore cool black and white costumes. Hey, Dan wrote many of those issues, and I scripted one or two myself! That suit was awesome looking because – but you don’t want to hear me yap, look for yourself! How sweet is that? The Bombastic Bag-Man and the Future Foundation suit – and they can be yours to use in the game simply by downloading patch 1.14 for the game by connecting online to the PlayStation Network. But what’s that you say, web-heads? You want to see how they actually look in-game? Well I have some good news for you! At 2pm Pacific today, you can check out Insomniac Games’ livestream where they will be playing the game with both of the new suits! Just go to www.twitch.tv/insomniacgames at 2pm Pacific. And once again – THANK YOU from all of us at Marvel, Insomniac, and PlayStation for the unbelievable reception you’ve given our game. It was a labor of love, made by fans for fans and we hope you enjoy this special new content! If you haven’t picked up Marvel’s Spider-Man yet, make sure you pick up your copy today, available exclusively on PlayStation 4. Looking forward to seeing your #PS4Share in the new suits! 9. A city under siege from the undead. Two heroes looking for a way out. Twenty years later, the survival horror masterpiece is reborn in Resident Evil 2, out now for PlayStation 4! For PlayStation fans the world over, it goes without saying that without PlayStation, there would be no Resident Evil. Following-up on the survival horror precedents set by the original game, Resident Evil 2 upped the ante – and the horror – by bringing the terrifying monsters and shambling undead down from the Arklay Mountains to the streets of Raccoon City, helping to bring the sense of fear and survival a bit closer to home thanks to the power of the PlayStation. The original Resident Evil 2 is synonymous with PlayStation for a ton of fans, and even the reveal of the game at E3 2018 featured a PlayStation controller as a nod to where the series began! Technology has certainly changed over the years since the original game made its debut on PlayStation back in 1998. Chunky CRT televisions have been replaced by smooth flat screens, while the pre-rendered backgrounds and polygonal character models of yesteryear have been upgraded to detailed environments and scans of real people to create the in-game characters – and even some zombies! With all this in mind, the team behind Resident Evil 2 aimed to create an experience that would not replace those memories of playing with the lights off by the glow of an old TV, but rather enhance the experience and give everyone, from newcomers to veterans, a way to experience the events of RE2 in a brand new light while retaining what made the original so special. From the desolate streets of Raccoon City to the iconic R.P.D. station, heroes Claire and Leon will have their work cut out for them if they want to survive the city of the dead. Joining them are fan-favorite characters who were introduced in the original Resident Evil 2, including the mysterious Ada Wong, a woman shrouded in mystery looking for the truth behind the outbreak, and Sherry Birkin, a young girl separated from her parents and being chased by a mutated monster. Who you choose will impact how you play and experience the events of Resident Evil 2 as well! No matter who you play, you’ll have to contend with some tough creatures… but the terrifying Tyrant, a monster specifically designed to crush you into paste, will put your survival skills to the test. Sometimes referred to as “Mr. X,” this nightmare in a trench coat will stop at nothing to chase you down, following you from room to room and leaving you with a constant sense of unease. Fans will remember him crashing through walls and showing up at the worst times in the original game, but the Tyrant has a number of new tricks up his (giant) sleeves. Yasuhiro Anpo, Director for RE2, was kind enough to answer a few questions about this iconic enemy: Some fans know him by “Mr. X,” some know him by “Tyrant.” Can you explain what the official name is for this enemy, and offer any insight into why he’s been referred to as “Mr. X”? His official name is “Tyrant,” and is one of Umbrella’s mass-production models. The reason he was also referred to as “Mr. X” was because there weren’t many details disclosed about him, even in the original title. This was done on purpose, since we felt that it would be far more terrifying to be chased around by a large man with no rhyme or reason or explanation why. Providing the player with too much information would only lessen the mystery and fear of the unknown, so we kept things shrouded in darkness. What are the main differences between the Tyrant as he appears in Resident Evil 2 compared to the original? In an attempt to blend in better into everyday society, the new Tyrant fits himself with a hat and coat for some level of camouflage. In addition to that, the coat is equipped with a higher level of durability to further deflect incoming attacks. Tyrant appears to stalk players for longer periods, and his attacks and movement speed have been updated. How do Tyrant’s behaviors vary from the original RE2? The main thing is that the Tyrant’s objective has changed. In the original title, the Tyrant only appeared in Scenario B, since its main goal was to capture Sherry’s pendant. However, in order to up the ante and instill an extra level of fear into its existence, we changed the Tyrant’s objective to be the obliteration of any evidence leading to Umbrella, including the eradication of any and all lifeforms still remaining within the vicinity. To make matters even more intense, once it finds a target, it follows after them in an endless pursuit until that target is dead. Even if you’re in the room next door, if you make a sound, the Tyrant will track you and hunt you down. If Tyrant’s function is to be able to blend into society to complete missions for Umbrella, do you think this would be effective in the real world? It might be effective from far away … maybe. You can’t hide the fact that the Tyrant is still a large, hulking figure. There’s probably no chance that its camouflage would work up close. If any children were in the vicinity, I’m sure they would be horribly intimidated and immediately burst into tears. What are your recommendations for players who are encountering Tyrant for the first time and want to try to fight back? If you hear its footsteps, then I’d say run like hell! I recommend also knowing your surroundings and constantly knowing what your escape routes are. Nothing spells out imminent doom like being trapped in a corner with no place to hide. Again, thanks to Resident Evil 2 Director Yasuhiro Anpo for answering those questions! There’s plenty more to do in Raccoon City outside of the main campaigns, too. Alongside a special “2nd Run” Mode that showcases an alternate series of events that unlocks when you complete a character’s story, there are a couple unlockable bonus modes awaiting those who are up to the challenge! The 4th Survivor places players in the boots of Umbrella agent HUNK as he battles his way out of the sewers beneath Raccoon City, while The Tofu Survivor offers an even more extreme challenge – fight your way out as a block of Tofu armed only with a knife! Ready to make the trip to Raccoon City? Survive in style with the Deluxe Edition of the game, which comes with additional costumes for Claire and Leon, a bonus weapon skin, and a soundtrack swap which replaces the game’s music with tracks and sounds from the original game! No matter how you play, you, too, can once again enter the world of survival horror with Resident Evil 2, out now for PlayStation 4. View the full article
  10. Happy Resident Evil 2 launch day everyone. Whether it’s your first time in Raccoon City or a return visit to Arklay County, there are plenty of surprises in store in Capcom’s superlative PS4 remake of its 1998 classic. To prepare you for your return to the world of survival horror, we’ve pulled together this handy guide, pointing out some of smaller but important details drawn up from our experiences on the streets of Raccoon City ahead of launch. There are very light spoilers ahead, and all are centered around the gameplay mechanics, either new or revamped for this release. Section 1: Surviving the hordes Choose your shots While ammo is more plentiful than the original game, it’s not limitless, so it’s still advisable to conserve bullets. Dodge where you can, make sure you’re aiming at the right spots when you can’t (see the next two sections for more). When you get the three-shot upgrade for Leon’s Matilda handgun, you can still fire a single round by lightly pressing R2, pulling fully down on the trigger for a three-shot. (In the original version, you had to switch between firing types in your inventory.) It’s okay to run and even better to sneak With practice, you can weave round zombies. Most of R.P.D’s corridors and rooms are wide enough to let you stay out of arm’s reach of the undead. Some zombies are quicker to react than others though: if you can, run past on the opposite side they’re facing. Aside from shuffling after you if you’re in their line of sight, zombies will be alerted to loud noises nearby. So, sneak up behind unaware undead or try and ghost past them entirely and avoid creating a dangerous congregation of ghouls. Lightly press the left stick to sneak: if you can’t hear your footfalls, neither can they. Practice this, and practice early: you’ll need it to survive enemies with more sensitive hearing later. Remember to dismember One creative way to save ammunition is to cripple your enemies by hitting them where it hurts. Put a few well aimed shots into a zombie’s knee-caps and they’ll no longer be able to stand, blow off their arms and they’ll no longer be able to break down doors, or if you’ve got some heftier firepower – a pump-action shotgun, say – then aim for the mid-section to blow them clean in half. The results are often messy and sometimes just a little darkly comic, but don’t get complacent: even parted from both arms and legs a zombie can still sink their teeth in if you get too close. Crowd control and equipped sub-weapons Spoiler: you will get cornered, you will run out of ammo and you will have no way out. At times like these, wasting the precious few resources you have might be too much of a gamble. Our advice: always save a flashbang or grenade for such an emergency. The former will dazzle your enemies (even the big ones) long enough to make a break for it. The latter will take out pretty much any smaller enemy within three or four meters. Hold onto these until you’re desperate – or if you do get grabbed, you can always jam them into a zombie’s mouth (tap L1 when prompted), stand back and await the fireworks. Note: whatever sub-weapon you have currently equipped will be your default Hail Mary when grabbed. Knives (as long as they’re not badly damaged) can be recovered from fallen foes, but grenades are single use. Make sure not to waste one of the latter on a solitary, low-level undead – keep your knife as default. (Remember, you can press L1 and d-pad to quick equip between sub-weapons). Choose your camera You may notice the game’s default camera is different from the One-Shot Demo released earlier this month. Jump into the settings menu and you can change whether you want it closer to your character’s shoulder or further back to get a wider view of your surroundings. Section 2: Exploring the world Breaking and entering Unlike the classic RE games, rooms are no longer isolated areas. Keep in their line of sight and zombies will follow from room to room, bursting through shut doors to find you. So if a door starts rattling, either hide or escape to another area before it opens. Stick too close to the door and you’ll get knocked back when it slams open. As the above suggests, doors react realistically to how you open them. If you slowly lean into any unlocked door, it’ll only crack open a tad. This allows you to peek into the adjacent room. Handy if you’re entering new territory. But more importantly, you won’t alert zombies, even if they’re looking right at you. Lastly, watch out for windows. The fragile glass panes of the Raccoon City’s colonial-era Police Department won’t take much of a pummelling. Use wooden boards to seal of these windows for good and keep the undead out of way. You’ll find wooden planks scattered throughout the station that are used to board up windows around the precinct. The remake’s more generous than the original, which only gave you one shoddy power cord and a tough choice between two sets of shutters to activate. That said, you should prioritise boarding up windows in the tight corridors on the west side on the building’s ground floor. For one, it’s near impossible to dodge zombies here, and secondly you’ll soon need the choice to sneak rather than run through these spots. Down doesn’t mean dead Real talk: telling the difference between ‘dead’ and ‘undead’ can be a tough call. There are corpses strewn all over Raccoon City: some are dead – super-dead – and they’re never coming back, but others? Well, they’ll stand up the minute you turn your back. This goes for the ones you’ve already put down too. A grisly corpse you pumped full of lead three rooms ago might well follow you down flights of stairs and across entire halls to take a wet bite out of your while you’re busy examining a bookshelf. Treat every corpse with caution. Checking your map Raccoon City’s a big place. The R.P.D station alone is a multi-floor labyrinth with multiple rooms, many with more than one entrance. Make the map (pulled up with a press of the touchpad) your best friend. It will name every room, mark the location of every discovered but uncollected item, and colour any area in red if there are still secrets to find or interactions left to complete. Most importantly, interact with any door you see (press X when prompted), even if it’s obvious you don’t have the means yet to open it. That door – and the item needed to access the room behind it – will also be marked in the map. This will remove any needless backtracking later when you’re unsure where to go. Under lock and key-code You’ll find a number of old-fashioned dial safes and bolted personal lockers dotted around Raccoon City. All of these can be opened and contain all kinds of interesting items, from massive ammo caches, to inventory expansions and even new parts for your favourite pea-shooter. Access codes are well concealed, so make sure you read through any documents you find carefully, check any writing you find scribbled on walls, doors or whiteboards. Most will reference the floor and/or room the related stash is in, and (if you follow “Check your map”, above) you’ll have a mark on your map of any unopened lockers or safes. Section 3: Managing your inventory Travel light Resident Evil 2 hails from a time before the invention of the near-bottomless inventory screens; there’s a limit to how much you can carry, with certain items taking up more room than others. Whenever you happen upon a storage box (typically in a safe area) check your inventory and store anything you’re not likely to need in the immediacy: extra ammo or healing items, crafting materials, or items you haven’t yet found a use for. You can collect them at any time, from any storage box, anywhere in the game world, so there’s no need to haul them around. Lastly, any item that’s no longer needed will have a red tick beside its thumbnail image in your inventory. Select that item and choose “discard” to permanently drop it. Combining and examining items and limited-time damage buffs Every item you find has a 3D model that you can examine in more detail from your inventory screen. It’s not just to be aesthetically pleasing: some items can be further interacted with to reveal secrets. These will be flagged with an on-screen prompt. Most items have a practical, real-world design: find a box’s lid to open it, for example. The Arklay Mountains’ famed indigenous herbs still work in the classic fashion of past RE games: green heals, blue cures poison, red increases the potency of the previous two when mixed in. Something briefly mentioned in the initial notes but not elaborated on is the additional buffs granted from certain mixes. Combine blue with red to not only cure any existing ailment, but it will grant you temporary resistance from poisoning. Combine red, green and blue for resistance to poison and a short-term defense buff. Consume this concoction and you’ll see a shield icon appear on the bottom right of the screen, overlaid on a gradually-decreasing green bar. For the duration of that bar you’ll take reduced damage – save these mixes for boss fights! Operate beyond the lore Peppering a game world with a little light reading is nothing new – books, diaries, reports and the like are all the rage for adventure games – and I’ll bet we’ve all been guilty of skim reading from time to time. In most games, you’ll likely be missing lore or back story, but in Resident Evil… well, you might be missing a big clue to the next beat in the story. All the documents you collect will be stored in your inventory – if you get stuck, give these a careful read. Clues are typically highlighted in green, but some crucial information is less apparent. Expanding inventory / upgrading weapons Initially, you’ll have to make use of the storage boxes mentioned above to manage your limited inventory space. As you explore R.P.D. though, you’ll find inventory pouches, each increasing your inventory space by two additional slots. The first you’ll likely spot is in the ground-floor Safety Deposit Room, though you’ll need to find a way to acquire it. Not to worry, there’s many more to be found throughout the game that vastly increase your carry capacity. On top of these, almost all of the weapons you find in the game can be modified with custom parts, improving accuracy, recoil, loading capacity and much more… keep a close eye out for these, but keep in mind, modified weapons will take up more space in your inventory. Section 4: The second half of the story Unlocking extra campaigns There are additional campaigns available in the game, which are unlocked when certain criteria are met. Play the game as Leon, for example, and you’ll know that Claire is running around somewhere in the game world. Start a “2nd run” after your finished his campaign (go to Story mode, then 2nd run from the main menu) to experience Claire’s side of the story, retreading the adventure from a new perspective with adjusted puzzles, new weapons and a different story flow. After you’ve completed that, head back to the menu again – there might be more to discover. Well, that’s all we’ve got – the rest will be up to you. Remember to bring nerves of steel, a panicked, high-pitched scream and a friend to cling to when things get too much and we’re sure you’ll get out of Raccoon City alive! View the full article
  11. Hello gamers! At last, Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain will be released for PlayStation 4 on April 11, 2019. Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain is a brand new EDF game, which utilizes the same game concept as that of the original EDF numbered series, but with different game design. The game contains all of the popular essentials of the original EDF series with many new added elements to excite gamers from all around the world who’ve always wanted to defend and protect the Earth. I will tell you all about the basic game concept of EDF before explaining what new elements have been added. EDF is a panic-action-shooter born from the Japanese developer, Sandlot. The game provides a unique experience which is created by using the opposite two components of “overwhelming sense of hopelessness” and “overwhelming sense of fresh experiences,” being co-existent in gameplay. This is a universal experience that continues to be offered throughout the series and has been drawn on the concept of “a human being confronting huge and massive enemies”. As the gigantic aliens fill the screen to a large extent, players of the game instantly become an EDF soldier and can use hundreds of weapons and arms to fight against them. People were addicted to the virtual experience of fighting, using courage and wisdom before the hopeless sight of all these large enemies. Everyone would definitely run away if this happened in real life! People started to talk and share their unique game experiences and this sense of fresh gameplay and accomplishment when winning battles have captivated many gamers from that point forward, through today. The series is 15 years old since its concept, the number of EDF soldiers continues to increase, and EDF 4.1 has produced more than 500K enlistments throughout the world. Also, the latest mothership title EDF 5 was launched in US and EU territories this past December 2018. The game sold more than 370K units throughout Japan and became the highest selling EDF title of all. That being said, we think EDF 5 will definitely break the sales record on a worldwide basis. So why are we now producing Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain? It all began with my wish to provide this wonderful EDF gaming experience to more gamers around the world. The numbered EDF series boasts overwhelming popularity in Japan and many core gamers are playing the series around the world. I strongly believe that once gamers experience this unique taste of EDF battling, everyone will understand how unique and exciting the game can be. On the other hand, I also realized that there are things to be done in order to bring more Western gamers into EDF to appreciate what the game stands for. First of all, we had to change the locations and world settings of the game. If the battles only take place in the streets of Japan, I feel that US and EU gamers would all be bored at some point. One of the reasons the game boasts high popularity in Japan is the important essence of “the monsters that strike us in our cities should be destroyed indiscriminately!” So in order for Western gamers to understand this essence, we had to change the areas and locations to places that will be more familiar to those players. We also had to consider changing the graphics. Even though I love the graphical taste of the EDF series overall, we knew we needed to let gamers try out this wonderful game at least once with its original graphics. Recognizing graphics shouldn’t be an obstacle though, we realized we had to bring the graphics closer to what most Western gamers prefer. There are many more Western gamers that will be pleased if they can freely change the look of themselves in the game. Not only in co-op mode, but with match mode (PvP mode) we thought many more players would be willing to play the game. How about the game system, the world settings, and the story, etc.? It was a necessary task for the EDF franchise to break through in the Western market in order to maximize and contain elements the Western gamers would be more pleased with. However, since I feel strongly that the EDF series is well respected as is, I didn’t want to make too many big changes to the EDF series for US and EU markets. After all, gamers who have been playing the original EDF series for a long time may not like some of the changes we will be making. Therefore, the final decision that we made was to develop “another new EDF” and from that Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain was born. The theme and concept of Iron Rain has not changed from that of the original EDF series developed by Sandlot. While carrying over the popular fundamentals as is, we’ve made changes and added new elements that we think will please the Western audience as much as possible. Fortunately, Yuke’s, the developer of Iron Rain, was familiar with what the Western gamers were looking for. Also, there were many EDF fans among the creators as well. (I was surprised that they were actually hard-core EDF fans!) Even though EDF is a game that already exists as a format, and core-fans will likely evaluate the brand rigorously, the creators at Yuke’s worked very hard on the new project. I would like to make sure that all EDF fans know the fact that the Yuke’s creators were very enthusiastic and came up with numerous new ideas, showed respect to EDF as a brand and Sandlot as a developer, and were very proud to develop a brand new EDF game themselves. And now, I would like to deliver Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain, which will be completed soon, coming to Western gamers as soon as possible. We have done everything we can so all Western gamers will love the new game. There is only one purpose for that too; to have you join EDF and defend the Earth! View the full article
  12. Hello VR friends! Let’s talk visuals today! We sat down with Sebastian Brueckner and Jamie Alexander Smith, Art Director and Animation Lead on Astro Bot Rescue Mission, respectively, to give you a bit of insight on how the game’s visual style came to life. Starting with environments, the stages were first created by game designers in a very rough format, using plain blocks to establish gameplay. Once we had a solid, fun base, the art team would remake the platforms from scratch at high quality and made them reuseable at different angles (like toy blocks that could connect in various ways). This technique gave us flexibility for building levels and allowed us to reduce the burden on the system. At times, the gameplay prototype created by the designers had to be changed quite drastically. For example, the Dragon boss prototype became a Gorilla to be more in line with the pop culture thematic we were shooting for and fit the urban style of the level. To dress up each level, the choice of materials was particularly critical for the Art Director, Sebastian. He and the team tried various styles to find the best match for VR. Through continuous research characters, enemies, vegetation (right down to the rocks) created a super-tangible feeling. We injected each object with a digital DNA, such as printed circuits board patterns and LED faceplates. This gave the game a unique playful, digital identity. Another big area is character animation as we sought to bring a believable world to life. The game features a big cast of fun characters, friends and foes to support the gameplay and make the game a fun, interactive diorama. Nearly every object in the game reacts to touching or punching it, which cements the player’s presence in the world, while turning it into an interactive sandbox. Prototyping became crucial for Jamie and the animation team. For example, they found out exaggerated animations, similar to classic cartoons, did not bode well in VR. Timings had to be adjusted for animations to translate well and this took some iterations. They played a lot on the duality of characters. For the bots, they balanced the cuteness with mischievous undertones: The Bots end of level celebrations are a good example of this sweet, yet edgy style. For Bosses, they followed a similar approach. The battle would start with a scary, intimidating arrival, then, as the player hits back, the bosses’ weakness would start appearing, making them look vulnerable and a little bit silly. This contrast not only empowered the player in their effort but also served as a ramp towards a humorous outcome. We hope this gave you a little bit of insight on how we created Astro Bot Rescue Mission. To thank you for your astronomical support over the past weeks, we would like to give a little gift: Here are some animated clips from the game. So get your dancing boots and get sharing! Let us know which one is your favorite. :) View the full article
  13. Melbits World is a beginning. It’s the introduction of a whole new kind of creature to the world of videogames. We aim to create a new and cute mythology: the woods have the fairies, the bridges have their trolls, and the internet has the Melbits. They represent the best parts of the interwebs! We want you to care for them, to laugh with them, and to help them take all the little things they find in the depths of the internet and carry safely home the good vibes we all need. You see, Melbits World is a game where you and your family and friends control the levels — not the characters — and it’s your job to make sure our goofy little mascots make it all the way through the many pitfalls and traps we’ve laid out for them. Oh, and did we mention you’ll be using your phone and PlayStation PlayLink to control the game? Yep, this one’s unlike anything you’ve played before. My name is Iván Expósito, and I’m proud to introduce you to one of the quirkiest and most endearing games you’ll play this year. “Melbits World is one part Tamagotchi, one part Lemmings, and equal parts addictive and hilarious to play.” –Me, when describing our game to anyone. Melbits World is a cooperative puzzle game that challenges you and up to three friends to help each other and the Melbits through several dozen levels. You’ll push, pull, bounce, spring, blow, and slide pieces of each level to help the hapless little guys on their quest to collect loads of swag, breed new Melbits, and make it home in one piece (or two out of three). But there’s a trick to making collaborative puzzle levels work, and for that I want to hand over the keyboard to our own level designer Oscar Crego. You may know his work from the massively successful puzzle platformer Gris. Oscar, what’s the secret recipe for strong level design? Oscar Crego – Level Designer at Melbot Studio There’s a secret recipe? How come no one told me?! No, there is no secret sauce, it is just work and work and work. In the case of Melbits World, progression is not something that is designed very intentionally. There are layouts that generate more or less complex levels than others, and in the end it becomes a question of testing them and deciding a final order. We tortured ourselves with all the “wrong ways” to make these levels before you, the player, ever get to see them. And, although logically the difficulty has to be increasing with each new level, I am not a fan of creating too ‘academic’ progressions either. It seems more interesting to create some odd points of difficulty so that people do not get comfortable, and after that nothing happens to return to an easier level. Normally I try to make each level develop a single idea, maintaining the coherence of that idea without adding elements that contradict it. This has been especially complicated in Melbits World, which must support up to four players without anyone getting bored. Often, more complex situations arise than one would like. In Gris, on the other hand, each puzzle or platforms zone can be extremely simple, but there is still a lot of work to connect all those parts with a consistency in the world in which they are inserted. The most important thing I’ve learned with Melbits World is that challenges should be presented as simply as possible to the player, even though they might not be easy at all. It’s always fun to watch a family sit down to play Melbits World, think they’re going to breeze through the content, and then realize it’s going to take a few tries to get their coordination and timing down. It might seem like an easy game, but the feel of it and the challenge is always a surprise. We joke around that we made the “Souls” of party puzzlers. Back to you, Ivan! Ivan Expósito – Studio Co-Founder There’s a certain innate joy in sitting down with your friends and family to play a couch co-op game that really tests your ability to work together. And the beauty of Melbits World is that it doesn’t rely on overly complex controls or systems. The PlayLink controls make it so that anyone who can use an iPhone or a tablet or an Android can easily grasp what needs to be done. Pull this lever to fling a Melbit, swipe that lever to move a block. And then it all comes together when you have four friends sitting down while they strive valiantly to guide these little creatures through each level, surviving traps and viruses, and having a good laugh while doing it. Pizza and/or beer have been great add-ons to those parties, we encourage you to try your configuration. It’s something truly special, and we can’t wait for you all to play it on February 5, when Melbits World launches exclusively on PS4 for $14.99. Melbits World is a beginning for us. Not only is it the first game we’re putting out, but it’s also the beginning of a series of titles and toys we hope will be enjoyed by millions the world over. That’s kind of an ambitious thing to say — we are, after all, just a small studio with big plans. But there’s something special about the Melbits, and we’re confident that after you meet them on your PS4 beginning February 5, you’ll feel the same way. View the full article
  14. An unexpected new chapter in the Far Cry franchise lands on PS4 on February 15. Far Cry New Dawn is a bold and colorful riff on last year’s open-world FPS sequel, picking up the action 17 years after Montana was decimated by nuclear explosions. To create a fresh new feel for Hope County, the team at Ubisoft has radically revamped the look, feel and mechanics that powered Far Cry 5, creating an experience that feels familiar yet surprising. To get a better idea of what to expect when the game launches next month and understand how the changes affect the flow of play, we sat down with Creative Director Jean-Sébastien Decant to find out more. Montana is way more varied than before 17 years have passed since the events of Far Cry 5 and the world has been ravaged by nuclear holocaust — it goes without saying that Hope County has changed. “The world has been rapidly retaken by the natural world in this time and the fallout from the disaster has caused some surprising changes: some elements from the west coast, for example, like sand and some seeds, were moved inland by strong winds, so now you have arid desert patches and crazy flowers right in the center of Montana,” says Jean-Sébastien. “You have lush forest as before, but prairies have been replaced by massive sand dunes. There are some areas that are badly polluted almost like dead zones and, finally, we have high-radiation areas that create a boundary to the world, but which also contain some hidden secrets that you can find later.” You’re not saving civilization, you’re rebuilding it Charting progress in an open-world game is always a fine art and one that Ubisoft has been perfecting for years now. As Jean-Sébastien explains however, the team had no intention of retreading old ground with their latest installment. “In Far Cry 5 we had the Resistance Meter and that changed with the story. We’ve put that on ice, but we wanted to keep something that would chart progress organically, so we have your home base ‘Prosperity’. Prosperity is the peaceful, fledgling community where you’ll begin your journey, but unlike Dutch’s Bunker, there are more opportunities to make this a home rather than a simple bolt-hole. “You find resources, invest in your home base and the story will move forward as you do, attracting new life — people, children and even pets — and they’ll also feedback on what’s happening in the game, commenting on the major story moments that unfold. “There are seven different facilities within Prosperity — including the garage, healing garden and cartography desk — and these can be all expanded and upgraded with resources to level up your character and unlock new tools, vehicles and weapons.” Crafting is king: if you can’t buy it, build it The Far Cry franchise is no stranger to crafting; with a mechanic for combining materials to build new items playing a significant role in most entries this generation. For New Dawn though, the team were confronted with a clear narrative spur to push these mechanics further than they had in the past. “Hunting around, collecting what you can and piecing stuff together to make weapons and tools is key to the narrative of the world. That gave us ideas for these crazy new weapons, like the saw blade launcher. “In Far Cry 5, you could buy weapons and upgrade them with scopes and silencers, but in New Dawn we wanted a different approach. All the weapons are unique and can’t be customized – if you want new weapons, something more powerful or efficient, you’ll have to find the materials and build it. “Of course, sometimes people fall in love with a weapon and want to stick with it. What we’ve done for those players is to make it so you can keep investing resources in a weapon and raise the stats.” Hope County has a dangerous new biosphere Those familiar with pop culture’s favorite post-apocalyptic settings have a fair idea of what to expect when they set out into a nuclear wasteland. The team at Ubisoft, however, were determined to put their own twist on familiar tropes. “We studied what could happen in a situation like what we have in Far Cry New Dawn and tried to create a believable scenario, but we had a little ace in our pocket: Bliss. There was a lot of this messed-up drug in Hope County that the cult was using to keep people sedated. We thought: ‘Imagine if you mix this with radioactivity.’ “This gave us a way to create some surprises for the player, mostly with animals, but for some other things too… which will be revealed later. “These will be some really tough battles, but what you can get from them is necessary to craft some of the most powerful weapons in the game.” The cultists have left, but the bandits have moved in Joseph Seed’s ‘Project at Eden’s Gate’ cultists were a major driver for the narrative and gameplay in Far Cry 5, but what good are doomsday cultists when doomsday has already come and gone? Enter a fierce new enemy to keep you on your toes: The Highwaymen. “The Highwaymen — the main adversary in the game — are not as organized as the Project at Eden’s Gate cultists and they don’t have a fixed doctrine. They’re together simply because they need power to survive: a place at night to sleep safely. “They’re marauders at heart — violent and desperate, but as focused or driven as the cultists — and they’re after the same resources that you are. Ethanol is the main fuel used in the game and is gathered up and stored by the Highwaymen, so you’ll need to fight them to secure resources you’ll need to expand your home base and keep it running.” The world is much less grounded There’s a bit of tradition within the Far Cry franchise of taking existing game worlds and re-invigorating them with wildly imaginative interpretations — we saw it with Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon and Far Cry Primal, and Far Cry New Dawn, as Jean-Sébastien explains, is no exception. “We have lots of crazy stuff in the game, because we know people enjoy being able to fool around. There’s a Planet of the Apes-style suit and full set of mechanical limbs that can be unlocked by completing outposts. “We’ve added facial hair to the character customization and you can apply this to both male and female characters. People were really attached to the outfits that we created for Far Cry 5. We wanted to stick with those and then add in new things to have as much variety and craziness as we could.” You can go beyond Hope County “In Far Cry New Dawn, the whole planet has been affected, so we had the opportunity to imagine places outside of the main game areas. This inspired us to create a challenging new mode with co-op as the focus that could happen outside of the central play area. “We call these ‘Expeditions’ and we have seven totally different maps: a derelict amusement park out in the Bayou; the abandoned prison on Alcatraz Island that you travel to by helicopter looking for specific resources to bring back. “These areas are pretty large, but because they’re separated from the main world, we don’t have the same technical constraints. This meant we could enhance the graphics and create new scenarios that are way more manic than you’d normally expect in Far Cry — with more enemies or larger indoor spaces that make for a very different gameplay experience.” Far Cry New Dawn launches on February 15 and is available to pre-order now at PlayStation Store or through local retailers. 15. Hey everyone, I’m JNash, community manager for Realm Royale over at Heroic Leap Games. It’s my great pleasure to announce that Realm Royale is moving into Open Beta on January 22! This means that Realm Royale will now be free to play for all PlayStation players. It’s been so exciting seeing how well Realm Royale has been received on PS4, so we are very excited to open the game up to a larger audience today. For those of you who aren’t familiar with our game, Realm Royale is a fantasy-themed battle royale which allows you to choose a class and then loot, or craft, weapons and abilities during the course of a match to customize your champion to fit your playstyle. Players can mount on their trusty steeds for faster travel around the map, and can queue in solo, duo, or squad modes. Many of you have already played Realm Royale in our Closed Beta, and we’ve gotten a lot of great feedback on the game over the past few months. If you’re a new player who didn’t get a chance to play during our Closed Beta, we’d like to welcome you to play Realm Royale today to experience all that Realm Royale has to offer, and to help us continue to refine and improve the game in the future. Our Open Beta release also sees some exciting new features and updates for Realm Royale. We’re adding a new mastery system that will allow players to unlock new talents for each class, offering further customization of your character to match your preferences and playstyles. The more you play with a class, the more talents you’ll unlock for that class, giving you even more options to personalize your gameplay experience. We’re also adding in two new weapons — the Assault Rifle and the SMG — to the game. Look out for these weapons when looting chests, or craft them at the forge! We’re also launching our second Battle Pass along with our Open Beta. Titled “Steel and Shadow,” this Battle Pass allows players to earn 80 levels of rewards themed around ninjas and pirates. What’s more, we’re offering this Battle Pass free to all PlayStation Plus members. We hope that you’ll use the cosmetics offered in this Battle Pass to show your support in the age-old debate: Pirates, or Ninjas? Whether you’re a returning player who played in our Closed Beta, or a new player who will be jumping in to the Open Beta for the first time, we welcome you, and we’ll see you in the Realm! 16. A Grand Strategy Game? On consoles? You must be mad! Perhaps, but doing mad things has worked out so far for us at Paradox, and we wanted PlayStation fans to get a proper introduction to the genre. It’s up to us to make a good impression with Stellaris: Console Edition! We are thrilled to bring Stellaris to consoles on February 26 for the first time with pre-orders starting today. Players can pre-order the Standard Edition for $39.99 and the Deluxe Edition for $59.99 USD at PlayStation Store. For those new to the genre, Grand Strategy Games put players in control of an empire over hundreds of in-game years, and allow them control over a large array of interconnected systems: military, economic, political, diplomatic, technological, and many more. Grand Strategy on consoles has never been done before and we wanted it to be done properly. That’s why we teamed up with Tantalus Media who has expertise in creating console adaptations; our own Stellaris designers were heavily involved in the development to ensure that the true Stellaris experience comes through. What began as an experiment to see if it even was possible resulted in a console GSG experience that we found surprisingly intuitive and really fun. There are a few UI changes to account for the controller input, but otherwise console players can look forward to a true grand strategy experience the likes of which has never been seen on consoles! At Paradox, we’ve built our company around the idea that taking risks and investing in games we truly love is what makes us stand out from the crowd. When we were creating the first Paradox Development Studio (PDS) games, we knew it was a risk to invest so much time and energy into creating games for — what was then — quite a niche genre. Grand Strategy Games weren’t as prolific as some of their more action-oriented brethren, but the community was smart, fun and avid about it. We saw something special there and resolved to build the best Grand Strategy Games out there. Since then, both Paradox and the GSG community have grown beyond any of our original expectations, allowing us to create grander, wilder experiences and push ourselves creatively as a company. In terms of the GSG experience players can look forward to with Stellaris: Console Edition, there are four discrete menus around the sides of the screen including a detailed Empire Management Menu on the left, the Resources Bar at the top, Time Control and Alerts at the bottom, and on the right there is an Empire Overview menu which allows you to select everything from planets to fleets. By tapping on the D-pad directions, you can easily access this key information about your empire or the galaxy. Analog sticks move the screen around, with the center of the screen being the point you’ll be selecting, you can zoom in or out with the triggers and R3 switches between system view and galaxy view. There are a lot of menus and interfaces that come with Grand Strategy Games, and this sort of gameplay might not sound easy to manage on a controller, but you may be surprised at how natural the navigation of the redesigned menus feels. We want the challenge to be in mastering the galaxy, not the controls! As our fans will know, a PDS game never exists in a vacuum (not counting the vacuum of space, of course) and we’re always hard at work creating more content in the form of DLC and expansions to support a game long after launch. We aim to treat our first console game in much the same way. In the months after launch, we’ll release the Plantoids Species Pack, Leviathans Story Pack and the Utopia Expansion for the console edition. Players who are interested in pre-ordering now can opt for the Deluxe Edition to receive those DLC automatically once they are released. We’re really excited about this opportunity to try something new with bringing Grand Strategy Games to consoles and we really hope PS4 players will enjoy checking out a different sort of console game. We look forward to bringing in new Democratic Crusaders, Federation Builders, and Star Emperors to our very active and welcoming community with Stellaris: Console Edition on February 26! 20. If you thought 2018 was a great year for games, hooo boy! We’re just days into 2019, and it’s starting with a bang. From the zombie-infested police station of Resident Evil 2 to ancient Japanese villages teeming with lethal swordsmen in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice — these are some of our most-anticipated games of Q1 2019 (January through March). Resident Evil 2 January 25 Are you ready to return to Raccoon City? It’s almost time to revisit one of the most terrifying and beloved horror sequels ever. Capcom is rebuilding Resident Evil 2 from the ground up to breathe new life into the unforgettably entertaining nightmare. Iconic characters like Leon, Claire, and Ada reprise their defining roles in this visually stunning recreation of the Raccoon Police Department and the festering underbelly of Raccoon City. Over-the-shoulder gunplay modernizes the experience, evoking memories of Resident Evil 4’s intense encounters. Count your bullets and hoard those First Aid Sprays — Umbrella’s monstrosities are deadlier than you can remember. Kingdom Hearts III January 29 The word “anticipation” doesn’t quite capture Kingdom Hearts fans’ excitement for this sequel — it’s more like a mounting eruption of enthusiasm. Kingdom Hearts III invites Sora and the gang to explore beloved Disney worlds including Andy’s Room from Toy Story, the Kingdom of Arendelle from Frozen, and more. Square Enix authentically incorporates the film worlds represented in the game, like Donald turning into an cuddly cyclopoid version of himself in Monsters, Inc., or Sora becoming an articulated action figure in Toy Story. Keyblades even transform to evoke the magical kingdoms as combos progress, such as a toy hammer turning into a drill in the aforementioned Toy Story setting. Get ready for an memorable adventure, whether you’re a longtime Kingdom Hearts fan ready to take on the darkness or a Disney-loving newcomer ready to visit your favorite lands. Far Cry New Dawn February 15 Who said the post-apocalypse had to be dreary? Ubisoft’s bespoke follow-up to Far Cry 5 — set 17 years after a nuclear catastrophe — transforms the scorched Montana countryside into something vivid and beautiful. A natural “superbloom” effect causes gorgeous flora to saturate Hope County, and colorful graffiti from those who survived mark the ruins of civilization. Despite the beauty, all is not well. A violent group called the Highwaymen and their vicious twin leaders — Mickey and Lou — are more interested in dominating the county than they are in peacefully rebuilding. The intriguing antagonists, captivating visuals, and inventive makeshift weaponry make Far Cry New Dawn one to prep for in 2019. Metro Exodus February 15 The post-apocalyptic survivors eking out their bleak existence within the husk of Russia’s subway system believe in life beyond the Metro. In 4A Games’ Metro Exodus, protagonist Artyom begins a quest to break out beyond the dank, desperate tunnels of the Metro in hope of finding life outside. On the way, he’ll fight through mutated monsters, hostile survivors, and the elements. Seasons change in the game, meaning you might have to fend off vicious winged Demons in the frigid winter, or face a mutated bear in falling foliage of autumn. Metro Exodus combines the new environments with the series’ history of satisfying stealth gameplay and bullet-counting tension, promising an intense journey. Anthem February 22 Who doesn’t want to hop into a rocket-powered armor suit and earn loot with friends? Bioware’s foray into online, cooperative-focused multiplayer suits players up in customizable Javelin exosuits and empowers them to soar through the skies, dive underwater, and defend their homeland. You’ll need firepower like missiles, flamethrowers, and more to exterminate deadly threats such as giant, cave-dwelling insectoid creatures. Players can select unique Javelin loadouts to strategize their approach to missions and maximize the team effort. If you and your crew are looking for a new online adventure to look forward to, Anthem could be a great fit. Devil May Cry 5 March 8 Dante, Nero, and a slew of colorful characters reunite in Capcom’s continuation of the Devil May Cry storyline. The DMC series originally put the “stylish action” genre on the map, fusing high-flying melee combos with flashy, long-ranged gunplay. The latest entry is looking to outdo itself, including bonkers implements of destruction like Dante’s new motorcycle – which can split into motorized saw blades for dual-wielded destruction. Dante is just one of three larger-than-life playable characters who join the battle against demonic forces. You can also suit up with Nero’s weaponized prosthetic arms or wield volatile magic as the mysterious V. The gameplay variety, bonkers action pedigree, and over-the-top spectacle should keep Devil May Cry 5 on your short list. Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 March 15 The collapse of civilization — sparked by a Black Friday pandemic and subsequent quarantine — has spread to Washington D.C. and threatens the nation. Ubisoft’s follow up to The Division calls agents back to the field to team up with friends and protect the capital. Historic landmarks and entire city blocks have been meticulously modeled in a stunning 1:1 recreation of the city, though it’s much more dangerous than the real-life tourist destination. Enemy factions, like the power-hungry True Sons, aim to seize control amidst the tumult. A new seasonal vibe comes with the shifting locale — say goodbye to the whitewashed New York winter and hello to summertime in D.C. You’ll be able to gear up and save D.C. with friends soon. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice March 22 The talented sadists at From Software are crafting another challenging quest to test your skill and resolve. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice transports players to a dark and fantastical ancient Japan, filled with powerful brutes, nimble assassins, and more. The hero — called “the one-armed wolf” — must outwit his deadly foes by harnessing his cunning and mastering the intense, deliberate swordsmanship From Software fans have grown to love. In addition to a trusty samurai sword, the main character also has a mechanical prosthetic arm that includes a grappling hook and other outlandish customization options. The ability to grapple adds a layer of enticing verticality to the stealth gameplay, which when combined with From Software’s best-in-class combat makes Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice unmissable. 22. And here we are. With hundreds of thousands of votes (thank you!) across 15 different categories, PlayStation.Blog readers have curated a series of gaming experiences from 2018 that exemplify the best the medium has to offer. Longtime PlayStation fans will likely be pleased to see which title raked in the most overall votes, but many will be surprised by the degree by which it dominated. Popular categories like Best Narrative and Best PS4 Game showcase how last year’s polls became a battleground for titans. There are also some fun surprises in there, too, such as the stylish winner of Best PS VR Experience, Best Independent Game, and more. If you’ve followed our Game of the Year festivities in previous years, you’ll notice one big difference: This year, we split our Editors’ Choice writeups out into their own posts, which ran over the holiday break. Here’s our take on 2018, with each nomination hand-picked by members of PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation Store: Editors’ Choice 2018 As Selected by PS Blog and PS Store Staff Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Astro Bot Rescue Mission Beat Saber Celeste Dead Cells Destiny 2: Forsaken Detroit: Become Human God of War Marvel’s Spider-Man Monster Hunter: World The Persistence Red Dead Redemption 2 Spryo Reignited Trilogy Tetris Effect Browse Editors’ Choice picks at PlayStation Store But you didn’t come here to read what we think. Let’s get to the exciting part! Game of the Year 2018 As Voted by PlayStation.Blog Readers Best Narrative God of War Kratos. Arthur Morgan. Peter Parker. Some of the most impactful stories in video games were told last year, featuring some of the most memorable characters. The voters have spoken — the familial tale of Kratos and Atreus conquers the category. Honorable mention to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Destiny 2: Forsaken, and A Way Out, which received noteworthy support as well. Red Dead Redemption 2 Marvel’s Spider-Man Detroit: Become Human Honorable Mentions: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Destiny 2: Forsaken, A Way Out Best Multiplayer Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Call of Duty this year was all about multiplayer, so it’s fitting that Treyarch’s trio of industry-standard competitive and co-op modes captured the category. Even though the trail-ridin’ beta for Red Dead Online didn’t launch until late in the year, Red Dead Redemption 2’s multiplayer mode still ranked high. The narrative co-op adventure, A Way Out, as well as Destiny 2: Forsaken deserve honorable mentions for the support they received. Red Dead Redemption 2 Battlefield V Monster Hunter World Honorable Mentions: Destiny 2: Forsaken, A Way Out, PUBG Best Sports Game FIFA 19 PlayStation fans worldwide showed up to show support for the planet’s most popular sport, securing FIFA’s dominating victory here. While they didn’t break the top four, MLB The Show 18 and Madden 19 also got strong support. NBA 2K19 WWE 2K19 Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 Honorable Mentions: Madden NFL 19, EA Sports UFC 3, MLB The Show 18 Best Graphical Showcase Red Dead Redemption 2 From the wondrous, sprawling lands of Midgard to the spectacularly detailed streets of Marvel’s New York, the games of 2019 teleported us to some stunning locales. Rockstar Games’ jaw-dropping interpretation of the Wild West in Red Dead Redemption 2, with its rolling prairies and meticulous interiors, captured the most votes this year. God of War Marvel’s Spider-Man Detroit: Become Human Honorable Mentions: Battlefield V, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Destiny 2: Forsaken Best Art Direction God of War Graphical fidelity doesn’t mean much unless you have a compelling art direction to focus that power. The fans have chosen God of War as the reigning deity of this category, with its vivid imagining of mythological realms from Norse myth. Whether you were stunned by the otherworldly design of the massive World Serpent or were sucked in by the ornate décor of Tyr’s Temple, developer Santa Monica Studio packed Kratos and Atreus’ journey with beauty. Red Dead Redemption 2’s devilish details – from intricately furnished homes to elaborately designed general store catalogues – also placed it high in the running. Red Dead Redemption 2 Detroit: Become Human Dragon Ball FighterZ Honorable Mentions: Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Destiny 2: Forsaken Best Sound Design God of War Expert sound design is one of those hidden pillars that separates great games from the fantastic. God of War cleaned house in the category, from the weighty “whump, whump, whump” of Kratos’ spinning Leviathan Axe to the rumbling bass of the World Serpent. Red Dead Redemption also receives recognition for recreating a convincing Wild West soundscape, down to the way Arthur whistles for his trusty steed. Red Dead Redemption 2 Marvel’s Spider-Man Battlefield V Honorable Mentions: Detroit: Become Human, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Destiny 2: Forsaken Best Soundtrack God of War Bear McCreary’s epic score earned God of War the top spot here. The musical backing of the father and son’s journey perfectly underscores the game’s adventurous bombast and quiet moments of bonding. Red Dead Redemption 2’s driving rhythm and country twang earned high praise, too. Fans also showed a groundswell of support for the sounds of Beat Saber and Destiny 2: Forsaken. Red Dead Redemption 2 Marvel’s Spider-Man Detroit: Become Human Honorable Mentions: Beat Saber, Destiny 2: Forsaken, Spyro Reignited Trilogy Best Ongoing Game Fortnite This was Fortnite’s category to win, and it did so handily with nearly a quarter of all “Best Ongoing Game” votes. It was a tight race otherwise, with Rainbow Six: Siege, Overwatch, and Monster Hunter World separated by just a few percentage points each. Rocket League and newcomer PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds also mustered strong support. Rainbow Six: Siege Overwatch Monster Hunter World Honorable Mentions: Destiny 2, Rocket League, Final Fantasy XIV Best Independent Game The Forest The indie space hosted one of this year’s most competitive races, with survival game The Forest leading the pack and PS VR hit Beat Saber coming in a close second. Dead Cells, Hollow Knight, and Guacamelee! 2 were narrowly edged out… and Dream Daddy: Dadrector’s Cut saw strong support, too. Beat Saber Celeste Tetris Effect Honorable Mentions: Dead Cells, Hollow Knight, Guacamelee! 2 Best PlayStation Console Exclusive God of War A high-impact combo of stellar titles made 2018 a banner year for PlayStation exclusives. The web-slinging fantasy of Marvel’s Spider-Man exceeded fans’ expectations and Detroit: Become Human delivered an impressively intricate story — but God of War garnered the most votes, landing it the Platinum Trophy for this category. What an incredible time to have a PS4. Marvel’s Spider-Man Detroit: Become Human Shadow of the Colossus Honorable Mentions: Yakuza Kiwami, Astro Bot Rescue Mission Best Performance Christopher Judge – Kratos, God of War In a year defined by larger-than-life performances, Christopher Judge’s nuanced take on world-weary Kratos won over voters. Alex McKenna (Sadie Adler) and Benjamin Byron Davis (Dutch van der Linde) also fared well, proving the value of Red Dead Redemption 2’s sprawling ensemble cast. Roger Clark – Arthur Morgan, Red Dead Redemption 2 Yuri Lowenthal – Peter Parker, Marvel’s Spider-Man Bryan Dechart – Connor, Detroit: Become Human Honorable Mentions: Alex McKenna (Sadie Adler, RDR2), Darin De Paul (J. Jonah Jameson, Marvel’s Spider-Man) Best PS VR Experience Beat Saber PS VR was built for transportative experiences like Beat Saber, giving players one-to-one freedom to slash to the rhythm in a visually entrancing world. To that end, Beat Games’ musical hit ran away with the number one spot. These titles showcase how amazing last year was for PS VR, and Star Trek Bridge Crew – the Next Generation nearly joined the winner’s circle as well. Borderlands 2 VR Astro Bot Rescue Mission Tetris Effect Honorable Mentions: Star Trek Bridge Crew: The Next Generation, Creed: Rise to Glory Best PS4 Game God of War PlayStation fans showed huge support for the Santa Monica Studio-developed God of War across all categories, so of course its huge victory in the Best PS4 Game category was no exception. Quantic Dream’s narrative-driven sci-fi thriller Detroit: Become Human also notably secured a place among the winners. This category also received the most write-ins, with Fortnite having the lion’s share (though not enough to squeeze in among the winners). Red Dead Redemption 2 Marvel’s Spider-Man Detroit: Become Human Honorable Mentions: Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Call of Duty Black Ops 4, Assassin’s Creed Odyseey Most Anticipated Game Kingdom Hearts 3 Voters are amped up for 2019, which this competitive category conveys. Years of anticipation for Kingdom Hearts 3 earned it the winning spot with Days Gone and Ghost of Tsushima also faring well with support. The Last of Us Part 2 also raked in a ton of write-in votes, but as we noted before, Naughty Dog’s hotly desired sequel wasn’t eligible since it won Most Anticipated in 2016. Resident Evil 2 Mortal Kombat 11 Death Stranding Honorable Mentions: Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima, Anthem Studio of the Year Santa Monica Studio The tightest race of the year, with less than 1% of votes separating Platinum and Gold. Santa Monica Studio ultimately took the top spot over Rockstar Games, but just barely. Toys For Bob (Spyro) and Quantic Dream (Detroit: Become Human) saw noteable write-in support. Rockstar Games Insomniac Games Epic Games Honorable Mentions: Ubisoft Quebec, Capcom, Bungie View the full article
  23. The VR experience of Hikaru Utada’s concert, “Hikaru Utada Laughter in the Dark Tour 2018 – ‘Hikari’ & ‘Chikai’ – VR” was filmed on Wednesday, November 7, at Yokohama Arena. The equipment for filming the VR scenes was brought in the day before, followed by elaborate rehearsals and the recording of two songs: “Simple and Clean” (the theme song of Kingdom Hearts) and “Don’t Think Twice” (the ending theme song of Kingdom Hearts III). This VR experience makes you feel like you’re right there in the arena. You can see her perform the two songs from multiple angles; watch her singing enthusiastically right in front of you, or from further away, giving yourself a wider view of the whole venue. In order to make the experience feel more real, three different cameras and shooting styles were used for recording both “Simple and Clean” and “Don’t Think Twice.” First, they shot with a 4K stereo/3D crane camera while approaching and backing away from the front. Then the same crane camera was used to film all around the left and right of Hikaru Utada. Finally, 6K · 180 degree cameras were used to shoot from far away, medium distance, and zoomed in at the same time. Every scene was shot with the latest equipment from Sony PCL. These three shots were filmed separately and edited into one VR video later. Direction was handled by Robot Communications, a company that is famous for producing movies, TV commercials, music videos, and VR images. The director is Wataru Takeishi, who has been filming music videos and tours since Hikaru Utada was 16 years old. After a final adjustment of equipment and one last sound and lighting check with the band members and string players, Hikaru Utada finally took the stage in a long black dress. They filmed “Simple And Clean” first. Regarding effective movement in virtual reality, Director Takeishi explains: “As you approach the camera from a distance, the audience feels that Hikaru Utada is coming closer to them. When she’s looking at the camera, they will feel as if she is regarding them. As they reach out, they feel like she pops out toward them because of the spatial effect. I gave her this kind of advice about emotional movement in VR. ” In “Simple And Clean,” there is one part where Hikaru Utada moves down the stairs to approach the front of the stage, and moves downwards and turns around. Before recording, the team confirmed that scene first and carefully checked the timing for her to start walking. After the timing and the speed of walking were decided, they were finally ready to go. As filming began, the director donned the PlayStation VR headset underneath the stage. He checked how the image looked in PS VR in the same environment the user would experience. Almost 20 staff members concentrated on Hikaru Utada’s performance at once. They controlled crane cameras, checked the images with a VR headset, and watched the monitor. However, things stopped as soon as they began. There was some discussion regarding when Hikaru Utada should sing the song’s chorus while looking at the camera, but the shooting would progress smoothly as long as they could decide when she should start walking. Filming with the first camera finished successfully in one take! The director attributes this to her wonderful facial expressions. The shooting went well until the last scene, which was filmed with the high resolution 180 degree camera. They filmed “Don’t Think Twice” next, after Hikaru Utada changed into a black-and-white dress. “Simple And Clean” was shot on the main stage, but this song would be filmed on the island stage in the center of the arena. This song was also recorded from three angles with different cameras. The director advised her that it would look better if she adjusted her movements and the angle of her face. Since the score division of the song is very unique, her rhythmic gestures would look nice in VR. This VR shoot adopted a one-cut method: when the song started, the camera would just keep moving around without cutting until the end. In other words, if something went wrong, the entire thing would need to be filmed from scratch instead of re-shooting from the middle. Nevertheless, Hikaru Utada’s concentration was rock-solid. She looked forward with overflowing emotion, her face dipping into shadow when she dropped her eyes. Even the filming crew had to take a breath to steady themselves from the shiver this performance evoked in them. The final shot continued using the different cameras and was also finished in one take. The filming of both songs for VR wrapped after about two hours. After shooting, we interviewed Director Takeishi and Chief Producer Yoshimasa Takahashi, who both work at Robot. Please tell us about the shooting concept of these VR videos. Takeishi: The concept was to reproduce “Laughter in the Dark Tour 2018” perfectly. For that reason, we made sure everything — including the stages, lighting, direction, and costumes — was exactly the same as the live performances. Takahashi: The biggest draw is allowing you to watch Hikaru Utada’s concert from the comfort of your own home, in a super special seat. Can you tell us about the role of each camera and the techniques you used during filming? Takahashi: The first camera was the one approaching and backing away from the subject. As the camera slowly approaches, you enter the world of the stage. This is meant to evoke a sense of immersion. The second camera was for shooting Hikaru Utada three-dimensionally, by wrapping around her left and right. The last one was for shooting the subject from a far distance, a middle distance, and zoomed in at the same time. The director’s version is the one that takes the best cuts from the first and the second camera and splices them together. Additionally, users can view the film however they wish by changing the camera angle. During shooting, Director Takeishi checked the videos while wearing a VR headset, right? Takeishi: Yes, I was checking what the users would see. The videos you watch with the PS VR headset have a different impact after all — the user feels like Hikaru Utada is singing just for them. Please tell us about any distinctive challenges of this project. Takahashi: The biggest challenge was moving the camera. That’s because it is considered taboo to move the camera for shooting a live-action VR image; the theory is basically to keep the camera stationary and have the performer move. However, we experimented with moving the camera this time. We discussed with Director Takeishi about how it wouldn’t be that interesting to shoot her performance as a 360-degree video. We decided to test a lot of things because we wanted users to watch unique, special VR videos. As a result, we thought that moving the camera while also having Hikaru Utada herself move or look at us would be innovative and challenging. Therefore, after cooperating with SIE on several tests, we thought it might work, so we decided to try something new. Additionally, we implemented 3D stereoscopic viewing with a binocular camera. This was another unique challenge. What kind of effect is produced by moving the camera? Takeishi: We aimed for an effect that draws the audience into the video while watching Hiakru Utada’s performance, and have her get close to them without them realizing. However, if the camera moves fast, it can be uncomfortable for the user. We aimed for the fine line where users can only just see Hikaru Utada getting nearer, without causing any discomfort. Takahashi: In past VR videos, the users themselves had to move to see what was happening on the whole stage. However, this time we are moving the camera, so if they just watch Hikaru Utada then all the stage sets come into view. They can enjoy Hikaru Utada’s performance as well as the concert’s production value. Speaking of VR images, it is common to have a 360 degree view. However, this content is not like that. Takeishi: You may think that VR video equals 360-degree video, but I do not think it is necessarily the case. It is less than 180° that you can see in this video, and if you look behind you, you only see black. But when people watch a concert, they don’t usually look behind themselves. We challenged ourselves to make realistic images in the viewable range rather than making a 360-degree video. Takahashi: Also, most people use PS VR at home sitting down. Looking back becomes a chore for the user. Rather than have them turn around, I thought that it would be more pleasing for fans if we focused on Hikaru Utada approaching or gave them a stereoscopic view. What do you think is unique to VR videos? Takeishi: Hikaru Utada is amazing; the feeling she puts into her songs, her facial expressions when she sings, and her gestures. In virtual reality you can really see the great care singers put into their work and these subtleties of emotion up close. VR users can experience much more than they would be able to just watching a concert or a music video, since they can see exactly what sort of expression the artist uses when singing certain lyrics. Takahashi: You can see things that you cannot see normally, such as where the artist is looking or what gestures she is making. That’s the charm of VR. Takeishi: I have been filming Hikaru Utada for a long time, but I was struck by her talent all over again during this VR shoot. I think that it would be interesting if VR video becomes the standard for artists — I felt great potential for that during this shoot. View the full article
  24. Traveling the abandoned highways of the Farewell Wilderness is deadly. You’ll pass through thick forests of ponderosa and pine (filled with wolves), venture into naturally formed lava tube caves (filled with Freakers), ride up steep trails to snow-covered peaks offering spectacular vistas (mind the Marauders — and Freakers — and cougars). Riding the broken roads through Days Gone offers landscapes that change quickly and dramatically, a living, breathing world — filled with things trying to kill you. The breathtaking natural beauty of Oregon’s High Desert, scarred by ancient volcanic activity, shaped in modern times by a dubious history of mining and logging, has long been a recreational area for outdoor enthusiasts who love to hike, camp, fish and backpack. During the pandemic that killed the world, tens of thousands of survivors fled into the wilderness not realizing that it was no safer than the homes, cabins, truck stops, saw mills and small towns they left behind. Freakers, drawn to mass graves dug throughout the Farewell Wilderness, were everywhere. Swarms of Freakers, Hordes of Freakers — all looking to feed. Throw in marauding groups of human enemies looking to rob and pillage everyone in their path, wildlife — infected or not — starving for food, and crazed cultists terrorizing anyone who won’t join them — and our love letter to the region begins to sounds more like a eulogy. Today, in the first of a series of three videos, we offer you a look at the Farewell Wilderness, the setting for Days Gone, a unique landscape that is as beautiful as it is dangerous. Keep an eye on the PlayStation YouTube channel over the upcoming weeks for more videos highlighting other key features in Days Gone. 25. Hello! We’re very excited to announce that Wandersong, the indie musical adventure game, is arriving at PlayStation Store on January 22! In the world of Wandersong, everything was once sung into existence by the almighty goddess Eya. And every epoch or so, she sings a new song to reset reality — effectively ending the universe. That’s just the way it goes! But you play as a bard whose goal is to stop the world from being erased, by collecting pieces of the mysterious Earthsong. In Wandersong you play as a walking musical instrument, using the control stick to sing melodies while you run and jump around! Different things in the world will react to your music in different ways, so it’s up to you to sing your songs, solve puzzles and make friends all across a 10+ hour adventure! Photo Gallery Wandersong is all about the story and the journey, so we wanted players of all types to be able to experience it. That’s why we designed it with deaf and colorblind players in mind from the beginning! Every note of music is expressed with sound, color, and direction, so players of any type can play and enjoy seamlessly. We also don’t punish the player for failing a given sequence — the point is always to play and have fun with music, so even when there’s a “right” answer, we’ll let you try and try again until you pass without setting you back or taking progress away from you. Ultimately, this is a game about good vibes, but don’t let that fool you! The story and characters go through dramatic twists and turns (no spoilers!) which reviewers like Destructoid called “a rollercoaster of emotion” and “the most emotionally satisfying game of 2018… one I’ll never forget.” PC Gamer said it’s “a game about loss, acceptance, regret, friendship, and the intimacy of colliding with another person’s life.” And RockPaperShotgun said it’s “as if the developers are hugging you from the opposite part of the screen.” For us personally, it’s so exciting to be on PlayStation! Our fans most often compare Wandersong to Night in the Woods or Undertale — we’re excited to follow in their footsteps! If you’re also a fan of indie adventure games with heartfelt stories and amazing soundtracks, we hope you’ll check it out on January 22! View the full article
