  1. Hello there! I’m incredibly excited to be part of the official welcoming committee for those of you looking to find success as a slime rancher! In Slime Rancher, you play as Beatrix LeBeau: a plucky, young rancher who sets out for a life a thousand light years away from Earth on the Far, Far Range. The range is covered with countless slimes wiggling and jiggling around every corner. Each type of slime has unique behaviors that you will need to learn if you plan on sticking around. It’s up to you to get your ranch up and running, discover the secrets of the Far, Far Range, and stake your claim in the strange business of slime ranching! Here’s the thing. The range is filled with other intergalactic entrepreneurs who already have a leg up on the tricks of Plort Market prices, optimal largo combinations, and the best uses of a drone. I trust that you’ll be able to handle the basics, so I’m going to give you a few tips I wish I had known before I rushed out into the untamed wilds of the Far, Far Range. Slime Rancher launches on PS4 tomorrow, so we don’t have much time! Let’s get started! Life on the Ranch Your Vacpack You start off equipped with one of the handiest (and probably the only free thing you’ll ever get from them) pieces of 7Zee tech out there: a vacpack. Use your vacpack to transport slimes and plorts, manage crops, and defend yourself from the dangers out on the range. Keep an eye on your profits, as 7Zee will have a number of upgrades available for you to purchase once you get a handle on the basics. While the vacpack was free, water tanks, jetpacks, and extra tank storage are not. The jetpack is one of the handiest tools if you love to explore, so grab that early on and let the sky be the limit! Plots and Corrals Ranch plots are another handy piece of tech that will make managing slimes a breeze. If you’re having trouble keeping slimes from escaping, try saving up for high walls and air nets. A well-fed slime will happily stay in its corral, but some slimes have a tendency to hop over the top of the low corral walls (I’m lookin’ at you, tabby!) and a loose slime on the ranch can spell disaster if left unattended. The Range Exchange Remember those other intergalactic entrepreneurs I mentioned earlier? The Range Exchange is the best spot to meet, trade, and befriend other ranchers out there. Complete Range Exchange requests not only for the extra money and resources they provide, but to build relationships with other ranchers. A friend in need is a friend indeed, and these friends have some incredibly useful resources to offer if you can prove yourself to be a top rancher. Bonus tip: The Lab expansion may have a high price tag, but the usefulness of all the slime science gadgets it has to offer makes it well worth the investment. Exploring the Far, Far Range Slimes The Far, Far Range is the only known home to the slimes you will encounter on your adventures. There are dozens of slimes and more than a hundred different types of slime combinations (largos) you can create. Each slime has a particular diet: fruit, veggie, or meat. Pay attention to what each slime prefers and try to find out which type of food is their favorite! If you want to make meal-time a breeze, combine a meat eater with a fruit or veggie eater and you won’t have to worry about having enough hen hens to feed your collection of hungry slimes (you can thank me for this later). A happy slime makes for a happy (and wealthy) rancher. In addition to keeping them fed, use the music box and toys to keep them calm! Dangers As you explore, you may come across feral slimes, hidden treasures, and mysterious slime gates. Always be aware of your surroundings and make sure you carefully observe the behaviors of the slimes and resources around you. Keep one vac-tank stocked with food (which you can pick up as you explore!) and grab the water tank upgrade as soon as you can. Feral slimes and tarrs aren’t so tough once you figure out how to handle them. Bonus tip: The Far, Far Range is massive and packed with secrets. Use that handy jetpack of yours to explore every nook and cranny of a zone! Stake Your Claim The rest is up to you to! You can play Slime Rancher any way you’d like: focus on maximizing your profits or spend the days exploring the vast world of the Far, Far Range. You can fill your ranch exclusively with rock slimes (because they’re the cutest) or create optimal largo combinations with hard-to-find slimes (rare = $$$). I’m really excited for the PlayStation community to experience the world we’ve created here at Monomi Park and I can’t wait to start this new adventure with you! Stay wiggly and I’ll see ya on the range! View the full article
  2. Hey! I wanted to share the top reasons to play God of War’s New Game Plus (NG+) mode, which launches today as a free update for God of War owners. This update is our largest one yet, and several of the improvements and features within can be enjoyed in both standard and NG+ playthroughs of the game. We’ve been waiting for you all to see what we have in store! Top Reasons to Play New Game Plus Relive the adventure of Kratos and Atreus, while keeping all of your earned equipment and abilities. Start a new game with all of your armors, talismans, enchantments, Runic Attacks, skills, and yes, even weapons. [NG+ ONLY] NG+ is for everyone! Upon starting a NG+ game, you will be able to select your desired difficulty – no matter which difficulty you picked for your previous playthrough. Enemies will be levelled up accordingly, so choose the amount of challenge which suits you best. [NG+ ONLY] Explore new customization options with more powerful versions of existing armors, talismans and enchantments. Collect Skap Slag, a new resource used by our blacksmithing duo to craft Perfect rarity-level gear. [NG+ ONLY] Forge a handful of new armor sets for both Kratos and Atreus, including some with exciting new gameplay abilities, such as a chest piece which creates massive explosions whenever Health or Rage stones are stomped on. [NG+ ONLY] Push the boundaries of combat by converting certain talismans and armor sets into enchantments, creating combinations which are not possible in a standard playthrough. [NG+ ONLY] Enemies can now turn elite even on “Give Me a Challenge+” difficulty. Add a new dimension to combat, even if you don’t want the ultimate challenge on “Give Me God of War+”. [NG+ ONLY] Some enemies have new behaviors and attack patterns. Maybe you should see how you hold up against the Valkyries this time around? [NG+ ONLY] Test your skills on timed Realm Tears. Running away won’t help you against Hel-Vikens and Revenants (once you open a rift) anymore. [NG+ ONLY] Receive a new shield skin when starting a game on NG+. Unlock an additional one by completing NG+ on “Give Me God of War+” difficulty. [NG+ ONLY] Repeat the New Game Plus experience as much as you’d like by starting another NG+ game from one you’ve just completed. [NG+ ONLY] Engage the story the way you want to. Skip cinematics as you please on both standard and NG+ playthroughs by completing the story at least once. Experience the scenes again to catch secrets you might have missed, or simply jump right back into the action. Switch out your armor pieces as much as you like without worrying. Easily transfer all enchantments from one piece of gear to another in the menu with the push of a button. Many bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements, such as ensuring that Parry Attacks keep Kratos safe at all times, improving the Wrath of the Frost Ancient Runic Attack, fixing inconsistencies with how enemy attacks can be parried, and much more. And there you have it. Thanks as always for all of the support and, regardless of whether this will be your first, second or even tenth time playing God of War, we hope you enjoy the adventure! 3. Grab your spandex tights! The GOOD ones. You’re gonna need to get limber, because Guacamelee! 2 finally comes out tomorrow, with a 10% discount for PlayStation Plus members! We’re thrilled to debut the launch trailer here on the PS Blog. And beyond that, a little treat — we’ll give you a peek at our process for taking story scenes from idea to implementation with some before-and-after animations. When creating each of the story moments in Guacamelee! 2, we start with the concept art / storyboards for the scene. Once we’re happy with the storyboards, we move on to a very rough mockup animation and review that as a group, making changes until we’re all satisfied. Finally, we make all of the art and animations needed for the scene and implement the story moment in-game. We’ve gone through this process for dozens of scenes in Guacamelee! 2, and we thought it might be interesting to share a few examples with all of you! JUAN’S HOUSE As the game opens, you see a bit of Juan’s cozy home life after saving the world in the first Guacamelee! — just before getting interrupted by the next crisis. First we have concept lead Augusto’s storyboards: This moment formed the basis for the opening of our announcement trailer. To plan out the actual in-game sequence, Augusto developed it further in Adobe Flash, working it into the real layout of Juan’s newly expanded house: And our final treatment matches that pretty closely! THE DARKEST TIMELINE Things go south pretty quickly at the start of the game. This scene where Juan drops into a scary, alternate-reality version of his peaceful hometown ended up dramatically changed after the concept phase, but the core moment of meeting the game’s bosses was kept similar: (Spot the shot that became another moment in our announcement trailer!) For many reasons, we instead ended up telling this scene as a flashback recounted by another character (for one, that heap of dead luchadors would have really cranked up our ESRB rating). MEETING THE CHICKEN ILLUMINATI This concept was a bit less fleshed out than the previous examples, but this “Super Secret Chicken League” definitely had charm. The idea eventually evolved into the “Chicken Illuminati”, an important yet mysterious group in Guacamelee! 2. Augusto polished this up in a Flash animation, showing Juan’s chicken form descending to meet them through a strange tunnel: This is another one where the game matches the Flash mockup closely. We really wanted the reveal of this oddball secret chicken society to be both grand and ridiculous. Hope you’ll check out the whole grand and ridiculous game on your PS4 tomorrow! 4. I’m incredibly excited to announce Falcon Age, a new first-person falcon-hunting action adventure that will be coming to PS4 and PS VR in 2019. The game starts on a dying colony planet that has been turned into a desert by machine invaders, with its culture destroyed and resources depleted. Play as Ara, who’s been wrongfully thrown in jail for a minor infraction. While she awaits her fate in a lonely cell, she passes the time by befriending a young falcon. Together, they escape and set off on an adventure to help the resistance reclaim their freedom and drive off the invaders. Learn to hunt, gather, and fight to reclaim your cultural legacy in the lost art of falcon-hunting against a force of automated colonizers. Explore a strange land while bonding with your falcon and helping the resistance. Falcon Age has been built from the ground up specifically for PS VR using Move Controllers or a DualShock 4. It can also be played on PS4 and PS4 Pro using a DualShock 4 and standard FPS controls. We want to give gamers options on how to experience the unique world of Falcon Age with custom tailored support for different playstyles and devices. Play it at PAX We’re showing off Falcon Age gameplay for the first time at PAX Prime next week! Visit us at booth #660 and get hands-on time with your falcon companion. View the full article
  5. We’re happy to announce that four new vibrant and stylish colors are joining the DualShock 4 wireless controller lineup in September! Bright, playful, and fun, the new Berry Blue edition brings new flavor to the DS4 lineup, while the vibrant Sunset Orange brings a little heat to your gameplay. The two-tone design offers a stylish contrast that makes the buttons and sticks pop! If you’re a fan of trendy patterns, the Blue Camouflage DS4 will be right up your alley. Alternatively, if you’d prefer sticking to one color, stand out with another metallic addition to the lineup with the shiny and refined new Copper DS4. The new colors will be available across retailers in the U.S. and Canada in September for $64.99 USD (MSRP) / $74.99 CAD (MSRP), while supplies last. In the USA, Copper will be available first at GameStop, and later at other select retailers. Click here for pre-order details, or check your local retailers for availability. 6. In Transference, the minds of the Hayes family are trapped in a corrupted simulation, and you’re their only hope of escape. The full experience launches on September 18, but all of you PlayStation owners out there can get an early taste of this psychological thriller with a free demo, available exclusively on PS4. Like the full game, you’ll also be able to immerse yourself in The Walter Test Case with PS VR – although if that’s too close for comfort, you can also play without a headset. Dubbed The Walter Test Case, the demo is a prequel that takes place several years before the events of Transference. Enter the experiment that laid the foundation for the events that followed. Explore the digitally recreated memories of a PTSD sufferer, where you’ll try to unearth clues by exploring a haunting apartment and solve mind-bending puzzles. Transference is a collaboration between Ubisoft Montreal and SpectreVision, a production company founded by Elijah Wood, Daniel Noah, and John C. Waller. It’s an experience designed to immerse you in believable but twisted environments, full of objects to interact with and dangers seemingly born from glitches in the simulation. Whether you approach its mysteries in VR or on your TV, The Walter Test Case is a chance to get a sense for what lies in store when Transference arrives on PS4 and PS VR. Start sharpening your investigative skills now – they might be the key to survival on September 18. View the full article

  10. Hello! Today I’d like to take you behind the scenes to talk a little bit about the development of one of our showcase boss fights in the new God of War. A warning to those who haven’t played the game yet: there will be SPOILERS for a certain boss fight to follow. If you’d prefer to experience it on your own first, kindly look away (and go buy our game)! Otherwise, scroll down to begin the journey. The God of War series has always had some spectacular opening boss fights: The Hydra, The Colossus of Rhodes, Poseidon and his water pony, among others. During these fights, the camera was usually zoomed out very far to show a sense of scale. This was because these fights all had one big thing in common: Kratos was fighting a massive foe. Get it? I said “big thing” because they’re massive. More to come, folks! We knew we needed to do something just as epic in the new God of War, so when it was decided that the opening boss fight of the game was going to be against a smaller humanoid that was only about as tall as Kratos’ shoulder, we knew we were in for a big challenge. This is the (greatly condensed) story of how we created the boss fight with “The Stranger,” aka Baldur. So, how do we make fighting a guy this small feel as big as fighting the giant bosses of previous God of War games? We do the opposite of what we always did: zoom the camera in closer! Not that close! That’s better. The close camera would help to sell the impact of each punch. These were two gods trading blows, so each hit needed to resonate with incredible force. Much of our early development time was spent on the “feel” of the fight. We wanted the player to feel like a god fighting a god, with the environment around you paying the price. We began with our animator, Fabian Johnston, doing some exploratory animations. These helped set the tone of the entire fight. It was not long before we had them running in the game, with a whole bunch of breakable objects sprinkled about. This first prototype focused on answering a few questions: How much can we push the godly reactions on both Kratos and Baldur before it starts feeling like too much? How far can we go with environmental destruction? How dense can we make the breakable trees and rocks before they start interfering with gameplay? Do these add enough to the feel of the fight to be worth pursuing? What size does the arena need to be to accommodate all of our other requirements? As you can see, things were pretty rough at this early stage. However, it was already fun to control Kratos versus Baldur and to experience all the over-the-top reactions while playing. It was especially fun trying to angle the camera to knock Baldur through trees and rocks. This early prototype helped set expectations on how the fight would feel in the end. We also discovered one big bonus to fighting a smaller character like Baldur: he was more fun to beat up. Hitting Baldur and sending him flying 50 feet was way more satisfying than hitting a giant monster’s hand. We played to this strength by making Baldur support almost all of our reaction states, such as being launched into the air or knocked back. Around this time, our concept artist Stephen Oakley did some pre-visualization artwork of potential combat sequences for the fight, inspired by the early animations Fabian did. These helped spark even more ideas. By now, we had a large bucket of cool things we wanted to try out for the fight. I created a design document next, planning out the key beats of the fight… not as exciting as Fabian’s animations or Stephen’s pretty sketches, so I won’t post it. But, I did some work too! I promise. Once we had a rough plan in place for the entire fight, we began implementing a rough skeleton for each phase, starting with the introduction when Baldur first appears at your door. As you can see above, the animation and camera went through a lot of changes, but the basic idea of “punch Kratos over the roof” stayed the same. We needed the intro to move you from the front of the house to the back. The skeleton served its purpose to communicate to the team exactly what was supposed to happen throughout the fight. This intro was later handed off to the cinematic team who did an excellent job re-animating it to be more… well, cinematic. Following the intro, the fight was broken down into three core phases. Phase 1 is the introduction, which takes place in Kratos’ backyard. During this phase, Baldur does not attack much. Since this is the first boss fight in the game, it’s important to have a phase like this to ease the player in. This gives them a chance to use Baldur as a training dummy and enjoy the spectacle of knocking him through trees and rocks (which we already established was pretty fun from our early prototype work). Story-wise, Baldur wants Kratos to attack him. He is purposely taking the hits in the hopes that Kratos can make him feel pain. Sometimes we’re lucky and the goals of both gameplay and story work together perfectly. The transition between phases gave us a chance to showcase even more godly feats. These required a lot of iteration to get right, due to the continuous single shot camera we were going for. You’d be surprised how hard it is to get two characters into the right spot during gameplay without simply moving them in a camera cut. The reason Baldur spins Kratos and throws him so high here is to mask how much we’re sliding the characters around to get in position to land on the roof. This was a recurring theme in how we designed many of our transitionary animations. Most of them have quick turns or heavy camera shaking impacts to hide the extra motion. Smoke and mirrors. You’ll also see here that we used some of Stephen’s earlier pre-visualization artwork as reference for this tree ram sequence. This fight, like many other parts of our game, is cobbled together with ideas from people all over the studio. As a designer, my job isn’t just to come up with ideas, it’s also to filter the incredible amount of creativity coming out of every department and cherry pick the ones that will fit best. The transition animations give us a change of scenery by moving the player to a new location. In a longer fight such as this, it’s important to keep everything escalating, including the environment. Another more subtle reason for moving the characters is that it refreshes all the breakable trees and rocks that were probably already destroyed in the first arena. This gives the player another new playground to destroy. This is where phase 2 takes place. The early part of the phase introduces Spartan Rage, so we keep the player in rage mode longer than normal to allow them to learn the mechanics. Baldur starts being a little more aggressive in this phase, so the player has to start paying more attention to Kratos’ defensive options once the rage mode runs out. The transition into the last phase showcases the work of our amazing breakables team. Fun fact: We originally planned to have Baldur throw a mountain at Kratos, who punches it in half. We eventually had to change it to be a bit more reasonable since Kratos is supposed to be a little rusty in this fight. If you see Kratos punching mountains in the future, however, you’ll know it was a long time coming. We had also originally planned on having Baldur attack you during this section where you’re climbing up the chasm. He would be kicking down rocks or causing avalanches, forcing you to dodge sideways to jump between ledges. This ended up being cut due to scope. However, in retrospect, it was good that we didn’t have time to include this. The whole boss fight is so fast-paced that it was nice to have a few more short quiet sections like this to break up the action. Phase 3 is when Baldur finally starts unleashing all of his attacks. As the first boss fight in the game, we didn’t want Baldur to be too difficult. It was more important that he give the illusion of intensity, rather than actually being a huge threat. (If you’re interested in a challenge, try out some of our late-game boss fights against the Valkyrie, which I also designed. Sorry in advance!) Baldur’s attacks are instead designed to teach and encourage different defensive mechanics: Ground shockwave – Unblockable shockwave that moves straight. Sideways dodge. Punch combos – Quick punches that can be dodged with good timing, but is most easily just blocked. Block or parry. Leap into air and stomp – Unblockable in a large blast radius. Roll dodge. Zig zag kick – Breaks guard. Parry or dodge with good timing. In addition to Baldur’s attacks, he needed a way to defend himself if the player was too aggressive. Since Baldur reacts to all of your attacks, he is more vulnerable to being locked in an infinite combo than most bosses. We did a lot of work to make sure he always has ways to slip out and get some of his own attacks in. Sometimes he will take an axe-hit and then counter-attack. Other times he may use the momentum of your hit to dash back and gain some space. His defensive abilities all exist to reset the playfield and force the player to engage with his offense. Baldur was also originally supposed to be able to grab your axe and use it against you. Imagine you throw your axe at him, he takes the hit, pulls it out of his body and throws it back at you. What a jerk! This proved a bit difficult to pull off… plus we didn’t want to discourage you from throwing your axe so early in the game, so in the end this feature was… axed. The development of just one boss fight involves pretty much every department. From environmental artists creating the arena, to audio designers making each punch sound chunky, to producers making sure we’re not just browsing cat videos all day. I was only able to share a small snippet here, but the end product was a culmination of everyone’s efforts. Thank you for taking the time to read all of this. I hope you enjoyed this short look behind the curtain. And I also hope you enjoy fighting Baldur! He may not be the size of a mountain, or have the ability to grow giant crab legs, but hey… he has one sick mullet. View the full article
  11. One moment from Demo Day stands out. A girl had just imitated a Blobfish swimming, to explain why her team, The Mystery Squirrels, had selected the unusual-looking creature as its protagonist for their game, Detective Blobfish. The room, which included senior leaders from PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and Caffeine, shared a laugh. This moment exemplifies to me not only the joy in games themselves, but the way the industry came together around Girls Make Games. When I had an idea to create a summer camp, where for three weeks, middle- and high-school aged girls could make their own games, I never dreamt of such a moment. Who could have thought that one day Executive VP of Gaming at Microsoft Phil Spencer, Executive VP of Business Affairs at Nintendo Devon Pritchard and Senior VP of Business Development at Caffeine Anna Sweet would come to PlayStation’s campus in San Mateo to celebrate girls in gaming? Moreover, that they’d join PlayStation President and CEO John Kodera, Chairman of Worldwide Studios Shawn Layden and Vice President of Product Development at Worldwide Studios Connie Booth in front of the PlayStation sign? I know it happened, because I have proof. When I started Girls Make Games four years ago, I thought of what it meant to have a home. A home is a place where you feel safe. You feel heard. You’re free to express yourself – or imitate blobfish. It’s a place where your thoughts, your ideas, your identity matters. I grew up in a place that I could never call a home. For 18 years, my family lived on a visa tied to my father’s job in the UAE. And the people in the UAE had a term for folks like us, kharji, which literally translates to “outsider.” There, in an Arabic country, I felt free inside my house and shackled on the outside. I lived in a place where expectations on me always wanted to limit me in who I was, what I could say, and what I could do. Then one day, my family got the internet, and I suddenly had a portal into the world outside. I learned that it was possible to fulfill my dreams: to go to college, to start my own business, to empower other women to do the same. Take the winning team this year, Team Sarcastic Shark Clouds. They created a game that took a multi-narrative approach to bullying, presenting the issue from both the victim’s and the bully’s perspective. They told me, “We never thought we’d win” and “We never thought our game was good enough.” Not only was it good enough to impress the industry experts, we’re going to make the full game over the next year and publish it on Steam and console. It is my hope that Girls Make Games can provide the same validation and access to education – which is the best form of empowerment – to girls everywhere. My father often says, “If you educate a girl, you educate a nation.” When I was a child, I never knew what that meant. Now, seeing so many young girls understand what they are capable of, and hearing so many leaders welcome their creativity and innovation, I’m beginning to understand what he meant. Learn about the finalists and winning ideas on the Girls Make Games website. View the full article
  12. I’d like to share with you some of the latest updates on The Quiet Man, a title I’ve been working on with the talented Human Head Studios team for quite a while now. The Quiet Man is priced at $14.99 and can be completed in a short concise amount of time – approximately three hours. We’ve shared very little about the game so far since our announcement at E3. In creating The Quiet Man, we wanted to take on an all-new challenge and opportunity in creating a game of high visual quality in a short compact gameplay experience that players could enjoy for a low price point. We wanted to create something unorthodox – a live action film, where you can take the role of the protagonist. In case you’ve missed it, we’ve revealed so far that… It’s a three-hour immersive cinematic live-action / third-person brawler gameplay experience with seamless transitions from the live action to gameplay. It’s something we feel that’s never been done before at Square Enix. The events of this game take place in a single night as you take on the role of Dane. You play in a soundless world where most of the game is inaudible and you must piece together clues based on each character’s actions, not their words. Some of our other key players are Lala the songstress, police lieutenant Ash who seems to have a connection with Dane, a highly mysterious masked man, and gang members from SOL 33 – Peter and Marcelo. We’re excited to bring you a new trailer that shows off the intense and brutal combat, and lays out the mystery of what will transpire in that single night. One of the main points we wanted to highlight in this game is the wide variety of combat – seriously, the combinations of grapples, attacks, and combos are amazing! They are all directed by action expert Tatsuro Koike, who is famous for being involved in properties like the Yakuza game franchise and the Power Rangers TV series. Check out just a few of the gameplay highlights below. One of the interesting things about this game is there is no HUD (heads up display). In order to show you a bit of how the combat works, we’ve developed some super simple battle guides! Using the square button will allow you to do single or combo light attacks. Triangle does heavy attacks, including kicks. Of course, combo’ing square and triangle will create different results! Circle will allow grappling and throwing enemies against the environment. That’s just some of the basics, so we plan to share more of these leading up to the launch of The Quiet Man! We hope you’re getting as excited as we are. If there’s anything else you are curious to know more about, please let me know in the comments below. View the full article

  14. You stand in the middle of the decrepit city of Eden, a lone source of civilization in a post-apocalyptic, dusty wasteland and nothing will come between you and the love of your life. As you jog through the alleyways on your way to recover parts for a broken dune buggy, you’re approached by a wild group of muscled men wearing mohawks straight out of the 80s, intent on starting a fight to the death. Punches, kicks, a scream of “ATATATATATATA” as you unload your charged fists into the torso of a single adversary, then the whisper, “Omae Wa Mou Shindeiru.” (“You are already dead.”) Developed by RGG Studio, the developers behind the Yakuza series, combat and carnage in this alternate take on the manga are… plentiful. In the game, the main character Kenshiro utilizes a fighting style called Hokuto Shinken to deliver crushing blows to opponents with explosive results. Only in the West: In addition to dual audio with Japanese and English voiceover, you will be among those able to experience the unrestrained, exaggerated deaths from the beloved manga and anime series. Comfort Combat: If you’ve played Yakuza 0, you will feel right at home with Lost Paradise’s combat. Dodging and strikes are familiar, but with a twist. Faithful to the manga and anime, you’ll utilize the art of Hokuto Shinken, an ability Kenshiro has to focus his strikes into killer attacks. Special finishing moves can be set up that will channel Kenshiro’s power into the bodies of enemies… resulting in exploding heads and torsos. Similar to Yakuza’s heat actions, after just a few quick strikes, you’ll be prompted to hit the circle button. Follow the quick time action prompts and very soon, you’ll be showered with a comical rain of blood and gore. Now You’re Really, Really Dead: Besides these strong finishers, Kenshiro will also unlock “Destiny Talisman” moves that can be used via the D-pad. These Talisman moves can quickly end clashes with crowds and slaughter without pity or restraint the toughest of foes. More than two dozen will be at release, and can range from area of effect attacks for crowd control to temporary usage of crazy weapons like flamethrowers. Bloody Carnage? An 80s vision of the future? Anime? LET ME BUY IT ALREADY OR YOU ARE ALREADY DE- We wouldn’t think of getting in the way of someone with such strength and power as you. Go right on ahead. Lost Paradise releases October 2 and you can pre-order it right now for $59.99! View the full article
  15. Hello everyone! I’m thrilled to announce that Unearthing Mars 2: The Ancient War will be launched on September 18! Unearthing Mars 2 is a futuristic FPS VR shooter from beginning to end, featuring slow-motion superpowers, distinctive weapons and challenging boss battles. You will experience adrenaline-pumping FPS combat as you shoot down enemies and bend time to your advantage. Our first PS VR title, Unearthing Mars, was released in 2017. It highlighted the potential of VR gaming by introducing a different gameplay mechanic in each chapter. This second installment continues the adventures; however, this time it will be a complete FPS title, featuring shooter gameplay from the last chapters of the first game that fans loved so much. You are equipped with a PS VR Aim Controller to take down enemy foes as you travel back in time to an ancient Mars civilization. The new gameplay enables you to shoot enemies as you comfortably maneuver in and out of action-packed combat. In Unearthing Mars 2, the extracted Phobos fragments from Mars are analyzed through the Ark Device and leads players to embark on a journey to unravel secrets of an ancient Mars civilization torn by an ongoing war. Each of the various fast-paced shooting stages features six or more weapons to choose from. The primary weapons are an assault rifle and shotgun. As you advance into further levels, you can unlock special weapons such as rocket launchers, plasma weapons, and chain guns. Additional rare and powerful weapons can also be found during boss fights. In any enemy encounter the player is able to trigger sharp focus, where within a split second of slowed time, the player is able to quickly aim and take down enemy weak points. Given the relatively low cool-down of the sharp focus ability, players are able to become practically invincible for a short period of time during critical combat moments. In the end, Unearthing Mars 2 is all about the boss battles. From fighting superhuman behemoths to gigantic automatons to a showdown in space limbo, these boss battles will test your shooting ability while offering unique gameplay mechanics in each fight. I can’t wait for all of you to experience the fun we’ve packed into Unearthing Mars 2 when it comes out on September 18 for $19.99. Thank you all, and we look forward to seeing you in the game! 16. Today we’ll take a deeper look at some of the features of Warface, which is coming to PS4 this fall. With Early Access starting today, PS4 players from around the globe now have the opportunity to become part of this community of over 50 million members. First, let’s talk about the key features that make Warface unique in its genre. While most other shooters are either strictly PvP or PvE-oriented, Warface offers a mix of the two modes. Players can choose to sign up either for competitive action in random to ranked matches, or join forces with allies against the swarming AI-controlled Blackwood hordes. Beware of Blackwood What is Blackwood, you ask? Cunning yet practical, this villainous organization is constantly searching for ways to exploit the world for its own profit and infamy. It’s up to players to decide how their story plays out, but fully understanding this enemy is no easy task! Enemies show up in a wide variety of units from basic to advanced infantry, as well as in the form of weaponized turrets and cyborgs. Speaking of cyborgs, players will encounter plenty of them in one of the special operations, Anubis. The importance of teamwork and character classes Mastering teamwork and party composition are essential in Warface. Classes also play a crucial role, and Warface has four of them available: Rifleman, Medic, Engineer and Sniper. Each of these classes have their own weapons of choice, pattern and style of gear. It’s important to be a team player in Warface because as demands shift during PvP matches, each specialized class can be changed (and in fact should be changed!) depending on the needs of the team. The same holds true with PvE mode, where carefully pre-selecting your party’s class composition is crucial before entering the raid. You’ll need the best balance to take down Blackwood’s forces! Early Access packs Early Access is a wonderful opportunity for PS4 players to get in on Warface’s unique FPS action before the full release this fall. We’ve provided five Early Access packs to help you get started, each containing exclusive weapons and their respective premium golden versions with enhanced visuals and stats. Four packs are tailored to the needs of each class, while the fifth one is the Collector’s Edition that includes the contents of all other packs and additionally provides a pistol, knife and premium in-game currency. Warface maps Well-balanced maps are the foundation of competitive online gaming, and Warface features eight diverse locations for players to explore. Players can choose from closed locations such as Bunker, Black Mamba or Shuttle, a stage which features a train station allowing for multiple tactical opportunities. Players that are accustomed to fighting in narrow city streets will not be disappointed with maps such as Downtown or Streetwars. Additionally, there are two maps that are best suited for players craving strict competitive gameplay: Yard 2.0 and Bridges 2.0. These are the maps we use for the main official tournament PvP mode, Plant the Bomb. The maps feature renewed textures, improved gameplay and perfected balance. Both provide excellent battlegrounds for aspiring e-sports players as well as casual players to master their teamwork and refine their weapon proficiency. Game modes There are eight PvP modes developed to suit the needs of different players. Looking to annihilate the enemy? Team Deathmatch brings two diverse locations to fight in. More of a lone wolf? Put your skills to the test in Free for All — you shall find no allies or mercy here. Plant the Bomb and Storm add new twists to already familiar gameplay, and require tactical execution skills as well as a high level of strategic planning to survive. There is still so much left to talk about beyond the features we covered today, such as slides, PvE tactics, and weapon choice. We will discuss those and more in future posts, but for now, we invite everyone to take part in the Early Access. Be among the first console players to explore the vast world of Warface! 18. Early on in Marvel’s Spider-Man there’s a scene where our hero — currently crawling through the air vents of a collapsing building — takes a moment to field a call from his dear Aunt May. May’s checking in, blissfully unaware while Peter is quickly stringing up bad guys and saving civilians moments before he’ll come face to face with a major nemesis. It’s just another day in the neighborhood. Throughout my two-hour demo I was constantly met with moments like this that reminded me of Peter Parker’s dual life. In one moment, Peter is just a young lab assistant looking to make ends meet and volunteering with his aunt at local food shelters; in another, he’s the agile and experienced web-slinger we know and love. It’s the classic Spider-Man dichotomy that Insomniac leans into, leaving me just as interested in Peter’s day-to-day activities and relationships as his crime-fighting responsibilities. Spending time with Aunt May or taking the time to solve tech puzzles at the lab help to flesh out Peter’s life outside the mask. It helps that Marvel’s New York is gorgeously realized, offering activities and adventure at every turn. I can guarantee that you will find yourself purposely choosing quests on the opposite side of Manhattan just to feel the sheer joy of swinging across long distances. I spent a lot of time running up the sides of buildings or swinging from tree to tree across Central Park with a smile glued to my face. The swinging mechanics are immediately intuitive, and whether you’re diving off rooftops or catapulting yourself forward while chasing everything from villains to pigeons (yes, really), it all feels completely natural. Combat also feels natural and accessible, despite offering an impressive depth of strategic options. Peter has been Spider-Man for eight years in this game, and the breadth of combat styles and abilities is a reflection of his experience. Wanna get in close and rapid-fire punch your way through some bad guys? Go for it. Wanna leap through the air and whip projectiles into robbers’ faces? You can do that. Wanna sneak around and stick enemies to the wall with a well placed impact web shot? You absolutely should. Every encounter gave me the chance to try something new and often I was rewarded for switching things up and taking advantage of Spider-Man’s skills and gadgets. This was especially true when I found myself face to face with Kingpin. He’s an imposing enemy with strength, technology, and many henchmen at his disposal, leaving you with the choice of how to strategically take him down. I ended up facing him three times before I found the perfect combination to defeat him. Ultimately Peter’s fighting style is creative, acrobatic, and very funny — sometimes it was worth it to take a few extra punches just to hear the quips he’d throw at Wilson Fisk Peter’s not alone in the fight to keep New York safe, however. During one mission I was able to play as Mary Jane Watson, now an investigative journalist, and well aware that Peter is underneath the mask. MJ can hold her own without superpowers, and uses her wit, intuition and sharp eye to solve a puzzle and uncover some damning evidence. Her sequence ended up being one of the standouts of my playthrough, and this spin on her character is a breath of fresh air. I’m itching for more opportunities to play as her as she and Peter continue to cross paths. Nothing quite prepared me for how seamlessly the exhilarating world traversal, varied gameplay and witty storytelling comes together. Balancing two lives has always been at the heart of being a hero, but Marvel’s Spider-Man makes it clear that both sides of Peter are an adventure. I’ll be counting down the days until I can swing through his life again when the game launches on September 7. View the full article

  22. Lara Croft has been on a personal journey since 2013’s impressive Tomb Raider reboot, from inexperienced archeology grad to seasoned survivor. When we meet Lara in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, she’s no longer running; she’s hunting down the world domination-obsessed military organization Trinity and its leaders, attempting to get one step ahead and turn their plans to ash. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions, as they say, and a series of hasty decisions on Lara’s part unleash a chain of cataclysmic events that have everyone from her longtime ally Jonah to Trinity’s head-of-command confronting her with the deadly consequences of her actions. At once, this new chapter feels more weighted and grounded than previous entries, and every part of the game reflects Lara’s journey into a heart of darkness. Nothing highlights this more than Shadow’s setting: the dangerous jungles of Peru. Lara has always been quick to use her environment to her advantage, but here she melds into her surroundings with confidence and ease. She can sink into beds of vines to sneak past enemies, or cover herself in mud for instant camouflage. New skills can be unlocked either through a traditional skill tree or by discovering ancient totems, like the extremely satisfying Eagle’s Talon, a rope takedown that starts with Lara dropping onto an enemy and ends with them strung up from a tree branch. Lara leans into her predator status here — in many ways her combat style is savvier and more ruthless than ever. That’s not to say Lara isn’t being hunted. A particularly exhilarating new addition to the series finds Lara face-to-face with other seasoned predators: the lethal jaguars of South America. A far cry from the wolf packs of previous entries, these encounters are contained, strategic experiences that will test Lara’s survival skills. The two encounters I played through had different setups, one allowing for ground traversal and another offering multiple chances to gain higher ground. In each one the jaguar weaved its way in and out of Lara’s field of vision, stalking its prey and leaping out to strike with deadly force. Using the available environment is key to avoiding its attacks, and utilizing the newly introduced Perception herbs (which function similarly to the series’ Medicinal herbs) can help you keep track of the predator’s position and go in for the kill. Tombs have always been a centerpiece of the Tomb Raider games (go figure), and in Shadow they do not disappoint. Puzzle sequences are ingeniously implemented, putting players’ logic to the test and rewarding progress with a rush of sweet, sweet endorphins. The tombs themselves are more expansive and treacherous than before, withmany requiring underwater traversal — a classic Tomb Raider staple making its first appearance in this trilogy. Strategically placed air pockets and the need to sneak past deadly piranhas or eels raise the stakes in these delightfully challenging diving sequences. Shadow of the Tomb Raider offers customizable difficulty settings that allow players to modify the difficulty of puzzles, traversal, and combat separately. Are you breezing through combat sequences but getting stumped by the puzzles? Or perhaps you’d rather not get any puzzle hints, but need some guidance when moving through the jungle? You can toggle these settings to fit the game to your preferences and craft a truly unique tomb raiding experience. As a longtime fan of the series, I’ve loved following Lara on her journey to becoming the fully fledged Tomb Raider. Shadow of the Tomb Raider exemplifies the elements that drew me to the series in the first place: thrilling exploration, engaging combat, and challenging puzzles. But it’s the moral exploration of Lara’s identity that has me most excited to dive back into Shadow of the Tomb Raider when it launches September 14 on PS4. Until then, you can preview some of the combat gameplay in our latest episode of PlayStation Underground: View the full article
