Rey and I spent much of this week in New York City taste-testing a batch of upcoming games, including Resistance: Burning Skies, Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection, Sound Shapes, and Street Fighter X Tekken for PS Vita (plus DUST 514 and Starhawk for the venerable PS3). It was a productive trip, all in all, and [...] More...

Welcome back to another edition of Long Live Play PSN Community Spotlight; where we look at posts submitted in the PlayStation Community Forums to focus on PlayStation-powered stories. We’ve seen a great response from the PSN Community with last week’s debut of the Long Live Play PSN Community Spotlight. This week’s post shows that spotlights don’t have to be all about PlayStation. The gates are open for anything you want to talk about gaming related; but it doesn’t hurt to frame it in a PlayStation context. Read the posting best practices for more info. This week’s spotlight has PSN member JillyDad taking a look at how stories are told in game. Long time gamers know that games can be as emotionally powerful as any book or movie if they get their storytelling right. JillyDad wonders if games can pave the way for more developers to utilize the vocabulary that only a game could offer. More...

Though legions of bloodthirsty PSN warriors have plunged into Starhawk’s multiplayer beta, the single-player campaign has remained stubbornly cloaked in shadow. Until now: At a media event in New York City this week, Lightbox Interactive finally gave a peek under that cloak, showcasing a series of frantic battles and lush cinematic sequences from the game’s story-driven campaign. As Emmett Graves, an interstellar mercenary infected by a priceless but mutagenic resource dubbed “Rift energy,†you’ll use the game’s dramatic Build and Battle combat system to call down turrets, walls, vehicles and structures from outer space. Your objective is to defend the frontier town of White Sands from marauding Outcast invaders -- including your Rift-possessed outlaw brother Logan. More...

The Legend of Dragoon was one of the last projects I worked on as a producer in Japan Studio and by far the biggest team I managed hands-on. We started the project in 1996 with only a handful of people, hired one by one as we were building up teams for Ape Escape, The Legend of Dragoon, and Ico simultaneously. During the peak of the game’s development, we had well over 100 people working internally in the studio on The Legend of Dragoon -- for a PSone game! We had roughly 10 artists dedicated just to drawing concept art for this gigantic RPG. As the game contained lots of pre-rendered maps and full-motion videos, we were forced to spread the content over four CDs, which was the maximum number of discs that the fattest PSone game case could hold. Developing Mortal Kombat for PS Vita was an incredibly rewarding experience for the team here at NetherRealm Studios. The ability to utilize the numerous new features available on PS Vita was a very gratifying mission, and we are delivering the best possible on-the-go fighting experience for fans. Our design team jumped at the opportunity to devise 150 new Challenge Tower missions that incorporate the DLC characters (like Freddy Krueger!), while also integrating the front touchscreen and accelerometer in ways that made sense and enhanced the complete Mortal Kombat experience. The artists enjoyed creating some excellent new costumes (still to be revealed!), as well as re-creating an iconic MKII arena that integrates the rear camera that will give players the ability to literally Fight Anywhere. PS Vita is the perfect platform for people on the go with short blocks of time to play games. The first free-to-play game on the platform is Treasures of Montezuma Blitz, the newest game based on the popular Treasures of Montezuma franchise. ToM has actually been around for years with its familiar match 3 gameplay, but each generation of the game has added new challenge and power-ups. This was one of the main things we wanted to ensure we hit with the PS Vita version. It had to be fresh and new, and most of all be fun. A lot of people look at freemium or free-to-play games and think you have to spend money to be competitive and beat your friends. That’s actually not the case with this game. We built the game so it is actually really fun whether you’re earning your power-ups by playing a lot and being rewarded in-game for your persistence, or if you are short on time and want the benefits of being a seasoned and dedicated player, you can spent a little to get a short-term power-up. It’s really the best of both worlds since it respects players that have a lot of time, as well as those that don’t. More...

Today, Escape Plan owners will be happy to see new content popping up on their Vita for download. The first pack, Bakuki’s Lair, is a FREE level pack that adds 19 prequel-puzzle rooms to the adventures of Lil and Laarg. To download the levels, just update the game from Escape Plan’s LiveArea directly on your PS Vita. Fans of Escape Plan have helped push the game into the #1 spot on PSN worldwide, and so we’re happy to report that we are improving the experience with a handful of adjustments that were requested directly from gamers. Players can now squeeze Lil while swiping, front and back taps are more precise, earning stars is just based on time and there are some more hints in sticky situations. More...

Greetings PlayStation.Blog and Starhawk fans! You may have noticed how our past trailers have focused on the things that make Starhawk so much fun to play. Build to Kill was all about the fun of building a base and defending it against attack. Ride, Drive & Fly gave people a taste of what you can drive and pilot in-game. Our latest trailer is all about the fun of teamwork, it's called "Build Your Team" and it's exclusively on Facebook. Just click here to give it a view. You may recognize some familiar faces. Very familiar. For those of you who have tried Starhawk already, you know that skills can get you far, but teamwork can get you further. The game becomes something completely different when you play with your friends and start working together. That's what our latest trailer is about. It also stars an "interesting" cast of characters. The Pinball Arcade Scores on PS3 and PS Vita Today
Commander Fury posted a topic in Playstation Blog
With the PS3 and PS Vita launches of The Pinball Arcade on PSN this week, I thought that I’d share a few more details about our game and offer some general gameplay tips. The launch tables include one from each of the four major manufactures that we’ve licensed. Tales of the Arabian Nights (Williams), Ripley's Believe It or Not (Stern), Theatre of Magic (Bally), and Black Hole (Gottlieb). Tales and Black Hole were part of the Pinball Hall of Fame games. We’ve spent a lot of time improving the physics and the graphics of our pinball engine over the past few years, so we feel that they’re definitely worthy of updating. When we first made the Gottlieb collection we gathered references from the Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. We took a lot of pictures, recorded the audio with microphones, and took notes on the rules along with gameplay video reference. We actually re-programmed all of the rules from scratch. More... -

Check out highlights of the four new multiplayer maps featuring new terrain, improved gameplay and even more amazing environments. For vehicle combat fans, the new PSN exclusive Wheels of Destruction is a fast-paced and strategic multiplayer combat racing game that allows players to switch classes within a match. Also featured is a look at the immersive interactive experience of Datura (from the Linger in Shadows team) which incorporates the PlayStation Move motion controller to investigate a mysterious forest, solve puzzles and, well, much like ‘Linger’, requires that you just check it out for yourself. The Top 10 features the most popular downloads of March and new video releases highlight Tom Cruise running very fast again in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and Mark Wahlberg being good bad guy in Contraband More...

Last week I was in Rome with some friends from Capcom to attend their Captivate event, an annual showcase of what’s in the pipeline for such game series as Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and Lost Planet. While I could spend a couple of hundred words on fountains and pizza, there is a lot of game news to cover; here’s a handy digest of all the best bits. The game features three playable characters – Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield and Jake Muller – with three unique, intertwining stories that the player can choose to play through in any order. While the action takes place in various locations around the world, we do know that a large portion is set in China. If you’re wondering who Jake Muller is, he is a new character, a mercenary in Eastern Europe, and the son of maniacal sunglasses advocate, Albert Wesker. We saw a playthrough of some of Leon’s story, set in Tall Oaks University after a bio-terrorist attack that turns the American President into a zombie, forcing Leon to kill him and subsequently face the blame for his murder (that might sound like a spoiler for the whole plot but this all happened in the first four minutes). Dear PlayStation.Blog fans, friends, countrymen: lend me your taste buds. If you could ask the candy that you eat what its lifelong goals are, what would it say? Would it tell you that it wants to be an astronaut? Drive in the Indy 500? Run a marathon? Probably not. If you asked a Sour Patch Kid that question, the answer would be this: To make it to the human belly, their sweet rapture. And that, my friends, is the premise of our new video game World Gone Sour starring the sweet-then-sour candy, Sour Patch Kids. We took that premise, added Creed Bratton from NBC's “The Office†as our “sometimes sweet and sometimes sour†narrator, got Wu-Tang’s own Method Man to create a custom song included in the game, and set out to make a ridiculously fun game for you to enjoy. World Gone Sour is a puzzle platformer made by the incredibly talented team at Playbrains (makers of the PSN-exclusive game Sideway where you play as an inch-high candy in a twisted miniature world where you play through sticky movie theatre floors, across sizzling hamburger grills, through a psychotic doll house, and over razor sharp buzz saws. You use the sour patch kid followers that you pick up along the way to absorb to get stronger, or throw them around like ammunition to help you take down ridiculous foes. You'll face dust bunnies, rogue nacho cheese beasts, gum crawlers, and matchbook spiders as you wall jump, grapple, and swing your way through the multiple environments and settings. More...

Sly ’s back, and the anthropomorphic raccoon has never looked better. PTOM’s May issue cover features one of PS2’s most beloved platformer protagonists as he prepares to star in his first all-new PS3 entry. Though original developer Sucker Punch has stepped aside, our visit with Thieves in Time’s developer Sanzaru Games indicates that the fourth game in the series is in good and capable hands. Elsewhere in the issue, the battle rages on in our Medal of Honor: Warfighter feature as we get our first look at EA’s second offensive front against rival Activision’s Call of Duty franchise. Warfighter’s focus on Tier One operatives and cinematic action sequences indicate it’s got its sights squarely set on the rumored but as-yet-unconfirmed Black Ops 2. We can’t wait to see the pyrotechnics when these two powerhouses meet on the field of battle. More...
