Sony’s PlayStation Store has been offline for almost a month following an attack on the company’s PlayStation Network, leaving PlayStation developers without a digital storefront to sell their wares. That should changes next week, according to new memo from Sony. The PlayStation Store is scheduled to return starting May 24, according to a report from Gamasutra which cites an e-mail from PSN content manager Jack Osorno to development partners. On May 24, content previously scheduled for April 26 will go live, with Sony attempting to catch up with rapid updates to the store. New content is reportedly coming quickly, with updates continuing on May 27, May 31 and June 3, doubling the typical weekly update schedule. Sony is expected to have its “Welcome Back” content available soon after the PlayStation Store comes back online, offering a handful of free games, movie rentals and membership to its PlayStation Plus subscription service. It’s been pretty much a month since the PSN has been down, but now it is finally coming to an end as it slowly gets back up to speed. This past week, online matchmaking has come back into the fray, leaving the Playstation Store, Qrocity, and Playstation Home left to get back into the mix. Once all is done, everyone will be entitled to some free games that they can keep forever. After reading the details, I think this is a much better welcome back than I anticipated. When the “Welcome back” program was first announced, I was a bit hesitant about it having a few issues with the vague details that were made public. I believed that the free content would be a game, and a few other small items such as themes and avatars. That was far from the truth when it was announced that gamers get to choose two games to keep out of inFAMOUS, LittleBigPlanet, Dead Nation, Super Stardust HD, and Wipeout HD. Depending on what you end up choosing, you could potentially have $40 worth of content absolutely free. I also took issue with the idea that everyone gets the free month of Playstation Plus, while existing members only get the free month and nothing else to give balance between those who pay for the service and those who choose the free route. Now that existing Playstation Plus subscribers get an additional 60 days of service on top of the month they get, I can say this is a good, fair deal for both parties. With all of this in place, I’d say Sony is doing right after the fiasco that ensued after the Playstation Network was hacked. The fact that PS3 owners get 2 games, including disc-based releases, is quite generous alone. Add that to a free month of Playstation Plus and free 3 months if you’re already subscriber makes the deal a very good one for everyone. According to reports on Nyleveia.com, Eurogamer, and NeoGAF, Sony’s PlayStation Network password reset system-the one just put in place after the PSN hack-has been compromised, allowing hackers to change a PSN password if they know your email and date of birth. Exactly the sort of information that was released in the original hack. Sony has taken the password reset system offline. Kotaku has reached out to Sony for comment. Update 1: The good news (as pointed out by NeoGAF’s “Metalmurphy”) is that if your account was compromised, you should have gotten an email from PSN that says your password has been reset. It looks as though “a very small number of Xbox 360 owners,†are experiencing disc read errors when applying an upcoming, mandatory firmware update which hasn’t been released to the public just yet, but some beta testers are experiencing the issue with the “updated Xbox 360 disc format,†firmware. The issues were verified by Microsoft Support, which stated that the firmware is not working with certain DVD drives, and with the various revisions to the system over the years, some drives are getting borked. According to an email sent out by Xbox Customer Support, the issues are detectable over Xbox Live, and if a 360 system breaks because of the firmware, folks will be sent a new 250GB Xbox 360 S and a free year of Xbox Live.†The Xbox Live update is expected to go live tomorrow in some regions, and the firmware update is not only being issued for anti-piracy measures, but will also provide an extra 1GB to the disc storage capacity. Electronic Arts have released a new trailer for Alice: Madness Returns and it focuses on the game’s creepy story in what appears to be an opening cinematic that is sure to start giving you goosebumps all over your body. Madness Returns takes place 11 years following the events of American McGee’s Alice with Alice now a young woman, but one that still cannot shake the dreams and visions on the night her parents burned to death. In trying to keep her sanity, Alice returns to Wonderland only to find it as confused and messed up as she has become. Think of it as Team Fortress meets Batman: Arkham Asylum. Gotham City Impostors, in development by Monolith Products for the PC, Playstation Network and Xbox Live, will have players taking each other out as Batman- and Joker-themed criminals and vigilantes. No date or price has yet been set for the game which will be published by Warner Bros. Interactive, the same publisher behind Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. The notion of a multiplayer Batman was often nixed by the publisher, we were told during a morning briefing in Santa Monica, because the theory was that everyone playing a mulitplayer Batman game would want to play as the cowled hero. So in Gotham City Impostors no one plays as him. Instead players will play on either the side of the Batz or the Jokerz as they game their way through a variety of online only, multiplayer only modes. Because the game is multiplayer-only there is no ongoing story, but there is a backstory. The concept, as shown during a cartoon shown during today’s presentation, is that Gotham is filled with a lot of disgruntled citizens who have decided to put on a Batman cowl of their own and take out a rising crowd of Jester-themed baddies. The game, built on a proprietary engine, feels a bit like a Team Fortress game, with fast gameplay and quick matches. I had a chance to check out the multiplayer deathmatch which put me in the shoes of a Bat armed with an assault rifle, shotgun, pipebombs and grappling hook. The game will include a number of classes, as well as body types. Body types, which include speedy, nimble and tough, impact your characters speed, toughness and strength. Players can also pick through an assortment of weapons to choose their primary and back up guns, a gadget and a support item. While many of the weapons looked pretty straightforward, there were also some home made weapons like a PVC-and-fireworks rocket launcher nicknamed “The Thunder Dragon” and a grappling gun that used a crank to pull you up to ledges. Characters’ costumes can also be customized, changing everything from the cowl, legs, hands and feet, to the logo and voice options. While the mode I played was a straightforward team deathmatch, the team demonstrated a mode called “Psych Ward” which had the teams battling for a large car battery. Once captured the battery, which leaves a trail of yellow ooze in its wake, has to be brought back to your base and attached to a brainwashing device. If you can defend it for 30 seconds you score a point, and turn on the machine which temporarily stuns all of the players on the other team, leaving them only able to slap attack you. The game will not include any bots and the studio said they are still working on how many players it will support in total. The round I played had a total of eight players in it. I enjoyed my short time with the game. It feels like a fun pick-up-and-play first-person shooter with the sort of nod to comics that both casual and hardcore fans of the comics will enjoy. Now that the PlayStation Network has respawned across various parts of the globe this past weekend, Sony is saying sorry in the form of free PlayStation 3 and PSP games. The PlayStation maker has outlined its “Welcome Back” offering for Europe and North America. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s head of communications Nick Caplan writes today that PSN users will get up to four free games for the PS3 and PSP from a select list. PlayStation Network account holders will be able to claim them from the PlayStation Store when that goes live—”just a little while longer,” Caplan writes—provided they have access to the Store in their country. Sony Computer Entertainment America has revealed its version of the PSN make-good plan, which is almost identical to SCEE’s. Here’s whats on offer. Two PlayStation 3 games from the following list: LittleBigPlanet Infamous Wipeout HD/Fury Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty (Europe only) Dead Nation Super Stardust HD (North America/Germany only) And two PSP games from the following list: LittleBigPlanet PSP ModNation Racers PSP Pursuit Force Killzone Liberation That list is a bit different for PSN users in Germany, which swaps Dead Nation and Infamous for the less violent Super Stardust HD and Hustle Kings on the PS3. Late last year, rumors circulated regarding a Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection remastered in HD and stereoscopic 3D for the PlayStation 3. A box art to the game and a listing on GameStop surfaced, adding credence to the story. Plenty of time past, and the new Mortal Kombat released without even a peep about the “Arcade Kollectionâ€. But now, it’s finally been confirmed by Warner Bros. Warner Bros. Square Enix has issued a statement confirming that hackers have launched an attack and gained access to their Eidos Montreal website as well as two other as of yet unnamed product sites. All three affected sites were reportedly taken offline by Square Enix*when the breach in security was uncovered, however not before the hackers made off with at least some personal information. As many as 25,000 e-mail addresses appear to have been stolen by the hackers and up to 350 resumes may also have been accessed. The resumes are those of interested applicants who have applied to*Eidos Montreal with aspirations*of joining the studio. The e-mail addresses are*those supplied when registering to receive product information updates. Even though the game was “accidentally†leaked earlier today by two major video game outlets, the official reveal wasn’t supposed to happen until later in the evening on GameTrailers TV. Which has now happened, and we can confirm that it was indeed Dylan Jobe and Lightbox Interactive’s Starhawk. Starhawk is coming exclusively to the PlayStation 3 and will take place in an area called “The Frontier.†It will include a single player story, unlike Warhawk, which focuses on a war over “Rift Energy†or “Blue Gold†to between the two factions Outcasts and Rift Miners, as well as the usual multiplayer modes. Rift Energy plays a big part in both multi and singleplayer, with gamers rewarded with energy for kills and actions and able to spend it as an in-game currency. You’ve had your first unofficial look at this year’s Call of Duty, now let’s see what the official unveiling of Modern Warfare 3 looks like in this brief, but now familiar teaser trailer, “America Under Siege.” There’s no gameplay here, just a stylized tease that the war from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues in the United States, with a look at a raging battle in the New York City harbor. Locations from Manhattan to Brooklyn are mentioned in the voiceover in this Modern Warfare 3 clip, locations outed by today’s extensive leak of Activision’s big game. Some of the key visuals here match the concept art seen in our spoiler-filled breakdown of Modern Warfare 3′s single-player campaign. Robert Bowling, creative strategist at Modern Warfare studio Infinity Ward said on Twitter today that ‘some’ of the information in the trove of images, level summaries and audio files, “still accurate,” but suggests that other details have changed, presumably during the course of the game’s development. On his widely-followed Twitter account, the man who has essentially been the chief online spokesman for the Modern Warfare games wrote: “A lot of hype & a lot of leaked info on #MW3, some still accurate, some not. To avoid spoiling the experience, I’d wait for the real reveal.” We’ve received no comment from Activision since publishing many of the details and images we were leaked. Bowling’s comments appear to be the first public reaction from officials involved with the game. He doesn’t note which details have changed.
