Sony Online Entertainment plans to give all DC Universe Online players a free month and “Batman-Inspired mask” as compensation for the current outage. The company asked players on the game’s Facebook page to bear with them as “the complexities of the subscription server dictate how and when this will be available” and that the company will be releasing “more information this week.” The outage is part of the overall PlayStation Network issue that resulted in SOE announcing earlier this week that 12,700 credit card numbers were taken and 24.6 million accounts were compromised. So, yeah, a free month and a virtual hat seems like a good start to an apology. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...

Sony declines to testify before Congress as $1 billion lawsuit filed. (from MSNBC.com) Sony Online Entertainment </p>Like a character from their currently shut-down game “DC Universe Online,” Sony is under attack from all sides. By Winda Benedetti A U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee is demanding answers from Sony after private information from some*102 million personal accounts was taken by hackers. In a letter written by the Congressional Subcommittee*on Commerce,*Manufacturing*and Trade and addressed to Sony chairman Kazuo Hirai, representatives asked the company to answer a list of 13 questions related to the hacking of Sony’s PlayStation Network. The questions come as lawyers in Canada have announced they’re seeking a $1 billion class action lawsuit against the company which has recently revealed not one, but two massive hacking breaches that left personal information from 102 million gaming accounts available to hackers. On Monday, Sony revealed that its Sony Online Entertainment PC gaming service had been hacked … this after revealing last week that the PlayStation Network service had been breached. The SOE breach exposed the information from 24.6 million personal accounts as well as some credit card information from gamers who play the service’s online PC games such as “EverQuest,” “DC Universe Online” and “Free Realms.” The PlayStation Network, on the other hand, allows PlayStation 3 owners to game online and that breach exposed personal information from 77 million private accounts. The Congressional committee*has demanded answers*about the PlayStation Network breach only perhaps because news of the Sony Online Entertainment breach wasn’t released until Monday afternoon. Among the questions they asked: “Why did you wait to notify your customers of the breach? “Have you identified how the breach occurred?” Have you identified the individual(s) responsible for the breach? “How many PlayStation Network account holders provided credit card information to Sony Computer Entertainment?” (To read their entire letter, see the New York Times post here.) The Committee’s letter demanded a reply from Sony by Friday, May 6, and explained that it had scheduled a hearing this Wednesday “regarding the threat of data theft to American consumers.” It invited Sony to attend and testify. Too busy to appear Sony, however, will not be attending tomorrow’s hearing. Sony Online Entertainment </p>Congress wants to know who breached Sony’s security. Certainly the mayhem these hacking attacks have caused is so extensive the Joker would be proud to take responsibility. “Sony declined to testify because their internal investigation is still ongoing,” an official working for Representative Mary Bono Mack (R-California), told game blog Kotaku Tuesday morning. But Sony has insisted it is cooperating with Congress. Sony of America spokesman Patrick Seybold sent a statement to Kotaku explaining: “Sony is cooperating with the request for answers to the Committee’s questions, and in fact will be providing our responses in advance of the deadline. We informed the committee that we could not appear as early as this Wednesday because of our ongoing intensive investigation and management of this criminal cyberattack.” In response to Sony’s decision not to attend the hearing, the committee has now moved the deadline for Sony to respond to questions to today, May 3, the New York Times reports. Congress joins the attorney generals from more than 20 states who have already demanded answers from Sony. And the FBI’s cybecrimes unit has confirmed they are looking into the breach as well. Meanwhile, as we reported this morning, Sony CEO Howard Stringer*is under fire for his company’s handling of customers’ personal information and the hacking breaches, with some investors suggesting that he should step down. Anger and lawsuits But no doubt, the most heat is coming from gamers themselves. The Toronto law firm McPhadden Samac Tuovi says it has filed a proposed class action against Sony “for the breach of privacy.” The lawsuit claims damages in excess of $1 billion, which includes having Sony pay the costs of credit monitoring services and fraud insurance coverage for two years. The plaintiff in the action is*21-year-old avid PlayStation user Natasha Maksimovic. “If you can’t trust a huge multi-national corporation like Sony to protect your private information, who can you trust,” Maksimovic said in a press release. “It appears to me that Sony focuses more on protecting its games than its PlayStation users.” This lawsuit follows a lawsuit that’s already been filed in U.S. District Court accusing Sony of “negligence in data security.” Meanwhile, as news of the second breach spread on Tuesday, many gamers responded with anger if not legal action. “Frankly, during most of the time I’ve been a SOE customer, I’ve tried hard to ignore the feeling of constantly being treated like dirt…” wrote one gamer going by the name Faelan at online gaming site MMORPG.com. “I think I’ve given them more chances than they deserve and each time I’ve ended up feeling like the fool. No more I say. Goodbye SOE.” “Sony is just another company that doesn’t care about its customers or its employees … and I think that’s why they were a target of the hackers,” wrote a gamer going by the name TheWillows on an “EverQuest” fan site. But some Sony fans have responded with understanding and have said they will return to the company’s online gaming services when the servers finally go back online. Wrote one “EverQuest” fan going by the name Kaifin, “I for one hope they recover because I have been happy with their products in the past. They were one of the big companies and got arrogant thinking it couldn’t happen to them and because of it they got screwed. Now they will be more careful in the future provided they survive this ordeal.” For more on this topic, please see: Sony Online Entertainment hacked, some credit card info taken Sony sued, could bleed billions following PlayStation Network hack Games to play while PlayStation’s network is down How will Sony make amends to gamers? Sony has confirmed that you will not need to log into your PSN account on the PS3 that you created that account on only. Earlier today, Sony held a press conference regarding the recent PlayStation Network hack, and provided several details on what steps will be taken from here on. One of the points that was mentioned by the translator was that the user’s PlayStation Network account password will need to be changed as soon as he or she logs into it once the network is back online. During this point, it was also mentioned that the password could only be changed “on the same PS3 the account was created or activated.†This can be heard around the 13:30 mark on the press conference video. The press release that was also uploaded during conference states: As an added layer of security, that password can only be changed on the same PS3 in which that account was activated, or through validated email confirmation, a critical step to help further protect customer data. This has led many to believe that their accounts are lost, as a lot of users have been forced to buy a new PlayStation 3 due to hardware failures in the past. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s community moderators have confirmed that you do not need to log on to the PlayStation Network with the PS3 that you created your account on. As long as your account is also activated on your current machine (i.e you have downloaded content to it previously) you should be okay. So, as long as you didn’t deactivate your PlayStation Network account through account management, you will be able to log in and change your password. The Jedi use their mystical powers for good. The Sith? The Sith use their mystical powers for sexy. Check out what the well-dressed Sith Warrior will be wearing in BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic. If Star Wars has taught me anything, it’s that the bad guys always look way cooler than the good guys. Just look at Darth Vader versus Luke Skywalker. One is wearing a long flowing cape and black plastic armor festooned with various bits of Imperial flair. The other? A terrycloth bathrobe. They tried to sexy-up Luke in Jedi with that all-black number, but that only confused fans. I distinctly remember wondering when Luke turned evil when I first saw him in his darker clothes. Good generally triumphs over evil, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better looking group of losers. Yeah, I just called the Sith losers. In the wake of Sony’s PlayStation Network outage, Sony Online Entertainment is already gifting affected gamers some rewards, and they have more plans in the works. From a statement we received yesterday: “We apologize for any inconvenience players may have experienced as a result of the recent service interruption. As a global leader in online gaming, SOE is committed to delivering stable and entertaining games for players of all ages. To thank players for their patience, we will be hosting special events this weekend across our game portfolio, including a Double Station Cash day on Saturday, April 30th. We are also working on a “make good†plan for players of the PS3 versions of DC Universe Online and Free Realms. Details will be available soon on the individual game websites and forums.” Double Station Cash days allow you to redeem purchased Station Cash credits for double their face value, which you can use in games like Free Realms, Everquest, and Everquest II. It’s nice to know that they plan to make good for the PS3 users affected by this outage as well. It will probably be awhile until we find out what that plan is, but it’s a nice gesture on SOE’s behalf. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...

Hey, haters of water, there’s finally a game for you on the PlayStation Network and PC. Hydrophobia: Prophesy is migrating from its current home on the Xbox 360 to the PlayStation Network and PC. This is less of a port, and more of reinvention, featuring beefed-up graphics, new gameplay mechanics, new levels, a reworked back story, a new ending, and new voice acting. According to developers Dark Energy, changes to the PS3 and PC version of Hydrophobia were based on community suggestions. “We could’ve just ported Hydrophobia Pure over to Steam and PSN after the positive response it received, but we decided to go much further. The community really blew us away with the incredible response to Hydrophobia Pure and the outstanding level of feedback on the listening post,” said Pete Jones of Dark Energy. Hydrophobia Prophecy will launch on Steam on 9th May and can be pre-purchased for $10.19 (including 15% pre-purchase discount) with a PSN version to follow. Sony Computer Entertainment has issued an update on last week’s “external intrusion” on its PlayStation Network, an attack that forced the network offline and may have exposed the personal information of millions of members. On the company’s PlayStation.blog, senior director of corporate communications Patrick Seybold writes that the PlayStation maker will be “taking steps to make our services safer and more secure than ever before.” That includes “a new system software update that will require all users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored.” Presumably, that software update will come to both the PSP and PlayStation 3 within the week. Currently, PSN accounts are locked out of the system, making a change to personal information and passwords impossible. Furthermore, Sony says it is “initiating several measures that will significantly enhance all aspects of PlayStation Network’s security and your personal data, including moving our network infrastructure and data center to a new, more secure location, which is already underway.” Sony writes that it still plans to have its PlayStation Network back online by next week, offering the caveat “we want to be very clear that we will only restore operations when we are confident that the network is secure.” For PSN account holders who may be concerned about the damage already done to their personal information or credit cards, Sony offers the following updates. On the safety of your personal and financial information… The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken. The personal data table, which is a separate data set, was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack. On the credit card details that PlayStation Network and Qriocity do and do not store… While all credit card information stored in our systems is encrypted and there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained. Keep in mind, however that your credit card security code (sometimes called a CVC or CSC number) has not been obtained because we never requested it from anyone who has joined the PlayStation Network or Qriocity, and is therefore not stored anywhere in our system. Additional details (and what appears to be bordering on an apology) can be found at the PlayStation.blog. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...

Ubisoft’s new Call of Juarez game, the one that features modern day cowboys and a Mexican drug war, has a new trailer, full of adult language, graphic violence, strip clubs, cockblocks and other things that may render it NSFW. Witness! Cleveland has a new — and most unlikely — sports icon in Peyton Hillis, who has been voted to the cover of Madden 12. Hillis, the could-be star running back for the Browns, trounced Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick in the final round of EA Sports’ five-week, bracket-style cover competition. Hosted in collaboration with ESPN, the vote-driven promotion featured a player representative from 31 one of the NFL’s 32 teams and … the Seahawks fans (who were eliminated in the first round). Hillis’ inspiring run, no doubt propelled by the passionate (desperate?) Cleveland fans that have been aggressively campaigning across social media networks, included defeating Green Bay Packers QB and Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers, the bracket’s #1 overall seed. “I didn’t think I had a shot,” said the humble Hillis during ESPN’s “SportsNation” show this afternoon, during which the winner was announced. Both Hillis and Vick were present on set for segments of the hour-long episode, doing their best to remain composed and engaged in the topics presented by hosts Michelle Beadle and Colin Cowherd, while a countdown timer ticked away. With the lights dimmed, Cowherd excitedly announced that “almost 13 million people voted” before he declared Hillis as the winner. The beefy back was then awkwardly goaded on by the two hosts, and even Vick, to show his “guns” as the show cut out for SportsCenter. Hulu Plus Available on Xbox April 29th

Hey, here’s some good news about a new online service coming out on a console that can currently use online services! That’ll be nice for a change. According to a legit-looking scan of the June issue of OXM, Hulu Plus will launch on Xbox 360 on April 29 — this very Friday. The last official word was “spring.” According to the magazine (if, of course, the “magazine” isn’t a well-executed fake) Microsoft will promote the launch with a contest, wherein each week from April 29 through May 30, prizes will be awarded to randomly chosen Hulu Plus users. The prizes range from Beaches Resort trips to free Xbox 360 bundles and Hulu Plus subscriptions. We’ve contacted Microsoft, but the company has yet to confirm or deny this report. Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal is “demanding answers” about why Sony Computer Entertainment of America failed to inform customers of the data breach of the PlayStation Network on April 20. “When a data breach occurs, it is essential that customers be immediately notified about whether and to what extent their personal and financial information has been compromised,” Blumenthal said in a release. “Compounding this concern is the troubling lack of notification from Sony about the nature of the data breach.” Of course, Sony just issued a statement that it says will be emailed to “all of our registered account holders” but, as we noted in our post, it’s been nearly six days since the “intrusion” first took place. Blumenthal elaborated, “Although the breach occurred nearly a week ago, Sony has not notified customers of the intrusion, or provided information that is vital to allowing individuals to protect themselves from identity theft, such as informing users whether their personal or financial information may have been compromised.” Sen. Blumenthal also sent a letter to SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton, you can see it below: April 26, 2011 Mr. Jack Tretton President and CEO Sony Computer Entertainment America 919 East Hillsdale Boulevard Foster City, CA USA 94404 Dear Mr. Tretton: I am writing regarding a recent data breach of Sony’s PlayStation Network service. I am troubled by the failure of Sony to immediately notify affected customers of the breach and to extend adequate financial data security protections. It has been reported that on April 20, 2011, Sony’s PlayStation Network suffered an “external intrusion” and was subsequently disabled. News reports estimate that 50 million to 75 million consumers – many of them children – access the PlayStation Network for video and entertainment. I understand that the PlayStation Network allows users to store credit card information online to facilitate the purchasing of content such as games and movies through the PlayStation Network. A breach of such a widely used service immediately raises concerns of data privacy, identity theft, and other misuse of sensitive personal and financial data, such as names, email addresses, and credit and debit card information. When a data breach occurs, it is essential that customers be immediately notified about whether and to what extent their personal and financial information has been compromised. Additionally, PlayStation Network users should be provided with financial data security services, including free access to credit reporting services, for two years, the costs of which should be borne by Sony. Affected individuals should also be provided with sufficient insurance to protect them from the possible financial consequences of identity theft. I am concerned that PlayStation Network users’ personal and financial information may have been inappropriately accessed by a third party. Compounding this concern is the troubling lack of notification from Sony about the nature of the data breach. Although the breach occurred nearly a week ago, Sony has not notified customers of the intrusion, or provided information that is vital to allowing individuals to protect themselves from identity theft, such as informing users whether their personal or financial information may have been compromised. Nor has Sony specified how it intends to protect these consumers. PlayStation Network users deserve more complete information on the data breach, as well as the assurance that their personal and financial information will be securely maintained. I appreciate your prompt response on this important issue. Sincerely, /s/ Richard Blumenthal United States Senate Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...

Sony moves to stop hackers from download PSN content for free, claims report. The past five days of PlayStation Network down time was sparked by a new PS3 hack that let users download PSN content for free spurring Sony to pull the plug. That’s according to new a speculative report that suggests the release of a hacked custom firmware which enables the downloading of PSN content for free is at the root of the ongoing issue. The report highlights that a custom firmware, known as ‘Rebug’, was released on March 31 which, in brief, gives retail PS3s most of the options and functionality of a debug (or developer) PS3 unit. A week later, tutorials appeared detailing a way in which users could use this firmware to download PSN content for free using fake (NOT stolen) credit card numbers. Apparently, hackers “found out that you could provide fake CC# info and the authenticity of the information was never checked as you were on Sony’s private developer PSN network (essentially a network that Sony trusted).” Piracy ensued, which is what triggered Sony’s decision to shut down PSN, speculates the report, going against common suspicion that the severs had simply failed due to a direct attack from disgruntled hackers. The report also says “no one’s personal information was accessible via this hack. Not to say they couldn’t get it, but no one is admitting to it being available,” backing up other reports today that the risk of credit card theft via PSN is ‘not substantial’. There are a lot of big games coming out over the next year but the one I am personally looking foward to the most is the PS3 exclusive *Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception on November 11th. The Uncharted series has always been renowned for it’s single player storylines an game play but in the second installment Naughty Dog Studios took some extra time and incorporated a pretty fun array of multiplayer options and it looks like they expanded on that for Uncharted 3. Uncharted 3′s Multiplayer game modes and game play are revealed for the first time, including split-screen, co-op multiplayer, customizability and more! Check out this quick montage of what awaits us (Please ignore the “music” unless you are into to it, then by all means rock out!). One of my favorite aspects of the new multiplayer is it allows splitscreen (something that I find severely lacking in most big releases these days) and the kicker is something that other gaming systems (Xbox) have been doing since the begininning. Namely players will have the ability to sign in with their own individual Playstation Network I.D.s while playing split screen. About friggin’ time! Here is a list of some of the new multiplayer game types and gimmicks to look forward too: Free-for-All: Classic you versus everyone else, now with 8 players total Power Plays: Gives the leading team more moolah but the losing team gets more chances for kills, something of a balancing system Medal Kickbacks: When you find treasure on the map you have the ability to use it to buy temporary boosters Overtime & Sudden Death: If a match is ridiculously close an additional minute may be added, but if it still ends in a tie it is last man standing who gets the win Buddie Boosters: Playing co-op? Now there are special perks built specially for the duo that loves destruction! Customizability: In the video you caught a glimpse of this but you will have hundreds of options from characters to wardrobe, weapon load outs and modifications, variety is the spice of life! Cinematic Multiplayer: Uncharted games are known for being cinematic, but with new 2-player co-op gaming options that movie-like experience is coming to multiplayer. You saw the runway map in the video? That is what this is all about! Highfives: Yup, i know I will have fun with that! Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...

A Microsoft representative has issued a statement to Electronic Theatre regarding the ongoing PSN issues, which are plaguing users worldwide. The representative of Microsoft’s distribution network said they felt bad for gamers, but at the same time, expects it to be of some benefit to Xbox Live. “Of course it’s regretful that Sony is encountering issues at such a busy time, and Microsoft takes no joy in the problems gamers are having playing their favourite games online,†said the representative. “That being said, we are expecting Microsoft’s robust online network to see an increase of traffic from those gamers who own both systems. Being able to play their games via the Xbox Live network could make all the difference for some gamers, and the Xbox Nations event will allow all of them to do just that – whether they have a Gold subscription or not.†When asked if Microsoft would see an increase in sales of the Xbox 360 console or game titles, such as the recently released Portal 2 or Operation Flashpoint: Red River, due to the issues faced by PSN users, the representative refused to offer comment.
