Chili327 Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 Ohio school suspends boy over Mohawk PARMA, Ohio - A kindergarten student with a freshly spiked Mohawk has been suspended from school. Michelle Barile, the mother of 6-year-old Bryan Ruda, said nothing in the Parma Community School handbook prohibits the haircut, characterized by closely shaved sides with a strip of prominent hair on top. The school said the hair was a distraction for other students. "I understand they have a dress code. I understand he has a uniform. But this is total discrimination," she said. "They can't tell me how I can cut his hair." An administrator at the suburban Cleveland charter school first warned Barile last fall that the haircut wasn't acceptable. The school later sent another warning to her reiterating the ban. Mohawks violate the school's policy on being properly groomed, school Principal Linda Geyer said. Also, the school district's dress code allows school officials to forbid anything that interferes with the conduct of education. Ruda's hair became a disruption last week when Ruda arrived freshly shorn, Geyer said. Administrators called Barile on Friday telling her to pick Ruda up from school. "This was his third infraction," Geyer said Tuesday. "We felt that we were being extremely patient." Rather than request a hearing to appeal the suspension, Barile said she'll enroll him at another school. Changing the hairstyle is not an option, she said. "It's something that he really likes," Barile said. "When people hear Mohawk, they think it's long, it's spiked, it's crazy looking, and it's really not." Quote

Deutscher75 Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 I fucking hate bullshit like this, restriction of freedoms is BS. They say it's a distraction, but how many kids would sit there all day long and be like wow mohawk! It would be a fad that I'm sure would last maybe 5-10 minutes tops and then just be something accepted by the other students. Quote
pito Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 im not trying to be an ass...but more people who look at a 150 pound 2nd grader than look at a kid wit a mohawk Quote
[<+>] mic-- Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 It all depends on what kind of school it was. If it was a public school, it would be total bs. But if it was a private school, they can pretty interpret the rules anyway they want. Quote
BIGDANIEL Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 UMMM... The kids are 6. Everything is a distraction at 6. Quote

Outlaw__Rebel Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 it is a private school what does she expect.... she is the dumbass they warned her twice if she didnt like it the first time she should have looked for another school I agree it's the mother's fault. She probably sits at home all day and eats ding dongs and has nothing better to do then to cause shit for her son at his school. You guys hear about the one here recently that is allowing her 8 year old Son to wear a dress to school because he thinks he is the wrong gender. They are making the school reserve a bathroom just for him. 8 years old! Quote
STREETSWEEPR1 Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 Rather than request a hearing to appeal the suspension, Barile said she'll enroll him at another school. Changing the hairstyle is not an option, she said hahahahahaaha she ois smarter then i thought Quote
Deutscher75 Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 I checked into this as Parma is really close to me. This school is not a private school. It is a special charter school for intellectually advanced children. Quote
